Pizza Hut has a new box that turns into a movie projector for your smartphone

Pizza Hut Blockbuster Box movie projector

Thinking that movie nights and pizza are a natural fit, Pizza Hut created a new cardboard pizza box that turns into a working movie projector powered by your smartphone.

It's called the "Blockbuster Box," and it was designed by Ogilvy Hong Kong for a Pizza Hut marketing stunt, according to The Verge.

The secret to each Blockbuster Box is the special pizza table that comes inside each box, which helps prevent the center of the box from touching your pizza and is traditionally made of plastic. The pizza table inside the special Blockbuster Boxes features a lens as part of the design, however, which you can insert into the side of the box after you punch out the perforated hole.

Once you've inserted the lens into the side of the pizza box, you'll then need a smartphone to power the experience. Placing your smartphone in the center of the Blockbuster Box, the lens will magnify your smartphone's display and project it onto the wall.

If you don't have Netflix, Pizza Hut has cleverly printed a QR code on each box that you can scan with your smartphone to download a free movie. There's four different styles of Blockbuster Box, with each corresponding to the genre of the free movie that comes with it: There's the Fully Loaded box for action movies, Slice Night for scary movies, Hot & Ready for your romance, and Anchovy Armageddon for your sci-fi fans.

Of course, the Blockbuster Box is far cry from the modern projectors we're all used to, but it comes free with your pizza. You'll also probably want to have some Bluetooth speakers or a spare audio cable handy if you want to actually hear the movie, as your smartphone will be inside the box when the projector is in use.

Pizza Hut is limiting the launch of the Blockbuster Box to select Hong Kong stores for now, so unfortunately we'll have to wait and see if Pizza Hut decides to offer its special boxes in other countries.

Scott Forstall, the former iOS head who was ousted from Apple in 2012, can now add several Tony Awards to his resume.

Forstall is a producer of "Fun Home," a Broadway musical that follows the story of a lesbian cartoonist looking back on her childhood with a secretly gay father.

The musical took home five Tony Awards Sunday evening, including the award f0r best new musical.

"Fun Home" also won Tony Awards for best book, best original score, best direction, and best leading actor.

Forstall told The Wall Street Journal in May that he really connected with the musical's characters when he first read the script in 2014.

"It’s about a real family with real love and real tragedy. The family is so different than mine, but it still resonated," he said.

Forstall is a long-time theater fan — he met his wife, Molly, when they were in a high school play together.

In addition to his financial contributions to the show, he also helped with digital marketing strategies and worked on partnerships with Silicon Valley companies like Uber and Yelp.

Forstall joined the rest of the "Fun Home" team on stage during the Tony Awards Sunday.

Beyoncé fans are angry after bogus 'exclusive announcement' ends up being a lesson on how to go vegan

Beyoncé fans who jumped out of bed this morning to catch her exclusive and much-hyped "announcement" on Good Morning America Monday morning were bummed to find out the three minute and fifty three second segment was simply Beyoncé telling everyone she follows a vegan diet — a Beyoncé fun-fact that's often publicized and written about at length.

Beyoncé was no where to be seen in the GMA studio, instead, producers showed a pre-taped confessional of the artist talking into the camera while GMA anchor's explained "drinking lots of water" will help you look like Beyoncé.

Beyonce

The video, titled "Beyoncé's diet secrets revealed" had fans angry, Gawker's Allie Jones points out.

The "Beyhive," comprised of Beyoncé's super fans, quickly jumped on Twitter to share their disappointment with their Queen.

Fans are also leaving thousands of comments on the star's Instagram photos in the form of hamburger emoji. If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words is an emoji worth?

Here's a photo of Beyoncé and Blue Ivy:

And here are the comments on that particular post:

And another tweet (you can see the others Jones gathered here):

Back in March, The Coveteur's Michelle Persad wrote "I tried the 22 day Beyoncé vegan diet...and I'm starving." It's no secret that Beyoncé follows this lifestyle and thinks others should join her — she created a vegan delivery service (announced in February; we wrote about it here.)

Persad writes of the diet: "Throughout the process, I kept wondering if Beyoncé really adheres to this diet -- for some reason I can’t see her scarfing down microwaveable muffins."

'Constantine' showrunner says former NBC series is officially dead

constantine nbc tv show

After a very rocky road for DC comic book drama "Constantine," showrunner Daniel Cerone has officially announced the series is dead.

"We're leaving behind wild and passionate fans who believe in and were moved by what we tried to do. To leave such a significant, dedicated and active fan base on the table — that's the real sadness," Cerone wrote on Twitter Sunday. "But our time as caretakers has ended."

After being officially canceled by NBC last month due to very low ratings and amid a groundswell of support from the show's fans, producer Warner Bros. Television tried to shop it around for a new home. Apparently, that was unsuccessful.

"The cast and writers of 'Constantine' are being released from their contracts," Cerone said.

Here's the showrunner's full message:

I promised I'd share news when I had it -- sadly, that news is not good. The cast and writers of Constantine are being released from their contracts. The studio tried to find a new home for the show, for which we're forever grateful, but those efforts didn't pan out. I'm sorry, I wasn't provided any information on the attempts to sell the show elsewhere. All I can report is that the show is over.

Many ingredients went into this TV series. From the dedicated cast that breathed these characters to life, led by Matt Ryan as the comic-made-flesh embodiment of John Constantine, to the exceptionality talented crew that put unreal images on screen, to the original Hellblazer writers and artists who gifted us a universe.

As a general principle, writers don't choose a writing career to achieve stardom. Whatever demons or insecurities drove them to find freedom of expression through written words generally keeps writers comfortably obscure behind their words. Nor do people choose writing as a means to financial freedom. I'd venture to guess that most who set out to write professionally never receive a paycheck for their hopeful scribbles or key strokes.

In fact, nobody I know ever chose a writing career -- it chose them. You write because that's what you do. Like breathing, it just happens and you have to do it and you just hope that someday somebody out there notices what you're trying to say.

If that's the dream of writers, than the writers of Constantine lived the dream, because we're leaving behind wild and passionate fans who believe in and were moved by what we tried to do. To leave such a significant, dedicated and active fan base on the table -- that's the real sadness. You all deserve many years of the series we set out to make, and we're disappointed that we couldn't deliver that to you. The good news is that Constantine will live on for years in many more forms. But our time as caretakers has ended.

Thank you for letting us in.

Netflix makes its biggest deal yet by buying Brad Pitt’s next movie

Showing once more it is becoming a major player in the film business, Netflix announced Monday it has acquired Brad Pitt’s new film, “War Machine.”

Based on the best-selling book “The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan,” Pitt will be playing a four-star general whose “lethal reputation and impeccable track record vaults him to command the American war in Afghanistan,” according to a Netflix press release.

The film, which Pitt is producing, will be available exclusively to Netflix subscribers and released in select theaters next year.

"The Operators" was acquired for a number "in the range of $30 million," according to reports, which makes it the biggest feature film acquisition buy for Netflix in its history.

Previously, Netflix’s largest acquired film was the period war drama “Jadotville,” starring “Fifty Shades of Grey” star Jamie Dornan, at the Berlin Film Festival for $17 million. “Jadotville” will also be released in 2016.

The Operators“We are so excited to be a part of the inspiring commitment by Netflix to produce cutting-edge content and to deliver it to a global audience” said Pitt in the Netflix release.

“Global” is an important word these days at Netflix, as it rapidly expands its service worldwide. Earlier this month it was reported that Netflix is now available in Italy, Portugal, and Spain. A move on a project with A-list backing like Pitt shows that it is seeking out content that will appease a global market.

Having Pitt also builds Netflix’s stable of movie talent.

The company already has deals with Adam Sandler, the Duplass brothers, and just recently inked a feature comedy by Ricky Gervais

Netflix also has a possible award season contender in the acquisition of the much buzzed about Cary Fukunaga ("True Detective") project “Beasts of No Nation,” which will be out later this year to Netflix members and theatrically.

Zoe Saldana's husband took his wife's last name — and he's not the only one to have made that move

Zoe Saldana

Actress Zoe Saldana's husband did something completely out of the ordinary when he married her — he took his wife's name, making him Mr. Marco Saldana.

In the latest issue of InStyle, Saldana talks about the decision, saying she tried to convince him not to do it, and that he would be emasculated by his community. Her husband's response? "So what!? eonline reports.

In a column last year for The Guardian, Jill Filipovic wrote about the fraught subject of women changing their names after marriage, and why men don't change theirs. She wrote:

On one level, I get it: people are really hard on married women who don't change their names. Ten percent of the American public still thinks that keeping your name means you aren't dedicated to your marriage. And a full 50% of Americans think you should be legally required to take your husband's name.

Somewhere upwards of 90% of women do change their names when they get married. I understand, given the social judgment of a sexist culture, why some women would decide that a name change is the path of least resistance.

But it's not completely unheard of for a man to take his wife's name. We dug up a few of these progressive husbands:

  • Mike Salinger took his wife Donna's last name. "Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought it would have caused as much of a stir as it did," he told USA Today.
  • Barry Chalfin Lenair made his "maiden" name his middle name, and took his wife's surname. "I realized that it was an important thing to do for me...and for the people who used to call me Mr. Lenair anyway," he told TODAY. "I don't regret it for a second."
  • Lazaro Dinh was accused of fraud when he took his wife Hanh's last name. “The suspension has been lifted,” Kristen Olsen-Doolan, spokeswoman for the Florida Department Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, told ABC news. “We’re doing training so everyone realizes [the name change] works both ways.”
  • Mark Tyler took his wife Carol's name. “Shortly before the wedding I decided to make the change," he told GalTime. "She (Carol) was stunned. Actually, she asked me to reconsider, that it was cool with her for me not to change. But I told her it was too late, and then she said great!”
  • After a lot of discussion, writer Aryon Hopkins took his wife Olivia's name. Blogging for The Frisky, Aryon said: "Hopkins, my wife’s last name, referenced a lineage of doctors from her father to her grandfather. The choice for me was simple: Honor a family tradition with meaning in our lives."
  • Mark Kemp was married for years with two children before he changed his last name to his wife's. He wrote on Role Reboot:

"I got in a minor traffic accident, and the two boys were in the back of the car. The police officer dealt with the accident situation in a few minutes and then asked me about the kids. I told him that they were mine, but he didn't accept it— I was a man driving around in the middle of the day with two little boys who had different last names than me. It took about 30 minutes (which included calls to their school and preschool and multiple calls to my wife) before he followed me home and verified that the boys and I lived there. That night, when my wife got home, I said, 'That's it. Case closed. I'm taking your last name.' She agreed."

  • Kris Myddelton took wife Jo's last name simply because he liked it. "My surname was rubbish and hers wasn't," he told The Independent.
  • Robert Everhart fought the state of Mississippi in order to take his wife's name. "I know most people think I rolled over and took my wife's name," he told AP in a telephone interview. "But she's the only surviving kid with her parents, and everybody said my name wrong. It was a dual reason. Now all I have to do is worry about people misspelling it."
  • Josiah Neufeld took his wife Mona's last name much to the chagrin of his relatives. He wrote in The Globe and Mail: "So far the name change hasn't cost me more than a few hours of paperwork, some explanations to public officials and a few strained conversations with brittle relatives who think I've joined a matrilineal cult. I still feel like myself. My identity remains intact."

Why 'The Martian' is going to be way better than 'Interstellar' or 'Gravity'

$

0

The first official trailer for the film adaptation of Andy Weir's "The Martian" is out and it looks like it's going to blow "Interstellar" and "Gravity" out of the water.

To some, "The Martian" might just sound like "Interstellar" 2.0: a big budget sci-fi movie where Matt Damon gets stranded in space. We're all very aware of the symmetry:

But there's going to be a huge difference between the two sci-fi movies: "The Martian" is going to be heavy on the science fact, and light on the science fiction.

Weir is a self-described lifetime space nerd, and that becomes obvious just a few pages into "The Martian." The movie adaptation doesn't shy away from the science either.

"The Martian" is a gritty survivalist tale that follows the story of astronaut Mark Watney after he is stranded on Mars when his crew is forced to leave without him. He's left in a space habitat designed to last for 30 days with no way to contact home. The next crew isn't coming for another four years, but Watney is determined to be alive when they get there.

“I’m going to have to science the shit out of this," Watney says in the trailer. Hell yes he is.

the martian matt damon

That sentiment is already present in the book — it's what keeps the plot moving. Before writing the novel, Weir imagined what a manned mission to Mars would look like, and all the things that could go wrong.

"So I made one unfortunate protagonist and I subjected him to all of them," Weir said during a talk at the Humans to Mars Summit.

The story doesn't read as one random disaster after another though. Watney relies on his science background to tackle each problem of being a lone, stranded human on an inhospitable planet — securing food, oxygen, and transportation.

"To a nerd like me, working out all the math and physics for Mark's problems and solutions was fun," Weir wrote in a Q&A at the end of the book. "The more I worked on it, the more I realized I had accidentally spent my life researching for this story."

Weir even wrote his own software to calculate the orbital paths he uses in the story.

The film looks like it's going to keep a lot of the science intact.

It's full of the same kind of science-backed disasters, like dust storms on Mars:

mars storm martian What can happen when you mess with rocket fuel:

oxygen explosion martianAnd when a space habitat airlock breaks:

airlock bust martian

We aren't the only ones excited for the movie. Retired astronaut Chris Hadfield gave the book a glowing review: "It has the very rare combination of a good, original story, interestingly real characters and fascinating technical accuracy…reads like 'MacGyver' meets 'Mysterious Island,'" Hadfield wrote.

NASA is even involved in the film. While the government agency can't support a private enterprise, their experts have consulted on the movie, and production has worked very closely with NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab officials, Weir said. European Space Agency officials have also been on the film set.

NASA also gave permission for the film to use the copyrighted NASA logo on its costumes, as you can see in these screenshots from the trailer:

NASA has even pointed out how realistic parts of Weir's book is:

So yeah, Watney is going to be science-ing the shit out of things in the movie too.

tony awards alan cumming kristin chenoweth getty

The 2015 Tony Awards took place Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

But in case you didn't catch the telecast, here's a rundown of the moments that most captured the internet's attention.

Business Insider partnered with Amobee Brand Intelligence — a company that provides marketing insight and measures real-time content consumption across the internet — and Prime Visibility, a digital marketing agency with the tools to measure social media mentions, in order to bring you the most popular moments of the awards show.

While Amobee found that much of the internet's attention when to Sunday's big winners, including best play "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," best play revival "Skylight," best musical "Fun Home," and best musical revival "The King and I," it's important to point out that those who didn't win also broke through.

At the young age of 11 years old, Sydney Lucas from "Fun Home" generated 3,213 tweets with her touching performance, despite losing in her category. And 82-year-old Chita Rivera also went home empty handed, but was mentioned in 1,773 around her performance from "The Visit." There was also 1,692 Tweets around Bradley Cooper who lost for "The Elephant Man." Although he didn't perform, the movie star has name recognition and some wondered if he had been snubbed.

Here are the moments that were most socialed from the Tonys, according to Prime Visibility:

1.) "Fun Home" winning best musical.

"Fun Home" is based on the complicated childhood relationship between lesbian writer Alison Bechdel and her father. It also doesn't hurt that "Seinfeld" co-creator Larry David and star Jason Alexander presented the award.

2.) The opening number

Chenoweth and Cumming are adorable in their sing-song-y intro to the night's festivities and its nominees.

3.) "Fun Home" star Sydney Lucas performs "Ring Of Keys."

The first Broadway musical with a lesbian protagonist, "Fun Home" centers in on love at first sight in this song.

4.) Ruthie Ann Miles wins featured actress in a musical for "The King and I."

While reading her acceptance speech on her iPhone, the actress reminds the audience to "please recycle."

5.) "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" winning best new play

A London import, "Curious Incident" follows the travails of a young man with Asperger's syndrome who's accused of killing a dog and looks to clear his name.

This genius 'Game of Thrones' map shows how Westeros compares to Earth

Millions of people are drawn into "Game of Thrones" every week.

And it's not just the sex, dragons, and intrigue — it's the deeply immersive world that George R. R. Martin created, Westeros.

Thanks to super fan and geographer Sean Garvey, we have a better idea of how that world compares to our own.

He's the creator of A Map of Ice and Fire, one of the most impressive maps of Westeros we've come across.

"What was really important to me when creating this spatial was to maintain a sense of scale for Westeros," he tells Business Insider.

"Using information gleaned from the book itself (such as the length of the Wall - 300 miles) and blogs such as the one found here," he says, "I digitised (i.e. drew) Westeros based on its estimated size and cultural and climatic relationship to our own world."

 The result is below:

westeros SizeCompareMap

"You can see straight away how huge this world is," Garvey says. "It stretches from the west coast of Ireland all the way to China!"

To make his map, Garvey dug information out of the books and combined it with analysis done by other fans. He input all that data — some 1,500 elements in all — into the mapmaking software ArcMap.

A librarian found the original 'Star Wars' script, and it settles one of the biggest fan debates of the film

It turns out the answer to a question that has puzzled "Star Wars" fans for decades was hidden in a Canadian library.

According to CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), while trying to digitize the University of New Brunswick Library's science fiction collection, librarian Kristian Brown stumbled upon an early draft of the "Star Wars" script.

The script, which is marked as a "fourth draft," is dated March 15, 1976, well ahead of the film's eventual 1977 release.

The most striking revelation centers around one of the most famous scenes in the film.

While at the Cantina Bar, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is confronted by Jabba the Hutt's henchman Greedo, who demands Han finally pay Jabba the money he owes him. The two of them come to blows, and Han Solo emerges as victorious. While that isn't disputed, the real debate lies in whether Han or Gredo shot first.

This is the famous duel:

Han Greedo GIF 1It is difficult to tell whether Han or Greedo got the first shot in, and several updated versions of the film haven't helped to settle the debate once and for all. For instance, in the 1997 version, the scene was slightly altered to make it look as if Han was acting in self-defense.

"I'll tell you one thing, right now," Brown told CBC"Based on the script, I can tell you 100 per cent, Han shot first."

Among the small differences in this draft, Luke Skywalker was originally named Luke Skykiller. Meanwhile, it was also called "Saga I." It would eventually go on to be called "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope."

"No matter how many new things are made, it all basically came from this first thing. And it's just good to look back at the origins of the entire thing and not forget, you know, what came first," Brown said to CBC.

Report: 'Top Gear' trio headed to Netflix

Top Gear 10 Downing Street

Three months after the abrupt end of "Top Gear" on BBC2, reports indicate that the show's trio of hosts are headed for Netflix.

According to the Daily Mirror's Nigel Pauley, a source claims that ex-"Top Gear" hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond — along with former showrunner Andy Wilman — are "very close" to a deal with Netflix.

The source also told the publication that Hammond and May will also reject the BBC's reported $7.1-million offer to return to the show.

Sources claim that the BBC's offer would have paid the duo each as much $1.2 million to $1.8 million a year to host "Top Gear" for another two or three series, the Daily Mail's Jennifer Newton reported last week.

According to the Daily Mirror, the hosts made it clear that "no amount of money could persuade them to return to the BBC2 show without Clarkson."

In recent weeks, the foursome have held meetings with a number of potential suitors including British broadcasters ITV. But it seems that Netflix has come out on top.

The American online media streaming service is home to such award winning original programming as "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black."

Top Gear's 22nd-season ended abruptly in March after only seven of the nine planned episodes had aired, due to the suspension and subsequent dismissal of Clarkson.

Hammond and May followed Clarkson out the door by voluntarily declining to renew their respective BBC contracts, which expired in April. Andy Wilman — longtime executive producer and close friend of Clarkson — also left the BBC in the wake of the hosts' dismissal.

The network's decision to part ways with the polarizing TV personality came after an internal BBC inquiry found Clarkson had punched a "Top Gear" producer when he failed to obtain a hot steak dinner after a long day of filming.

Top Gear BBCIn addition, the fracas with the producer came on the heels of a controversy-filled 2014 for Clarkson — which saw the TV host mired in scandal stemming from accusations of racist, sexist, and culturally insensitive comments.

Prior to his dismissal, Clarkson had spent nearly three decades with the BBC as a host on "Top Gear" and is credited with being the driving force behind the show's explosive international success.

With more than 350 million weekly viewers, "Top Gear" set the Guinness World record as the most watched factual TV program in the world. In addition to the UK show, the Top Gear brand includes numerous international spinoffs, a live stadium tour, merchandising, a successful magazine, and a website.

Although their involvement with the "Top Gear" television program may be over, the show's trio of former hosts will continue with its live stadium appearances. However, the tour will no longer be able carry the "Top Gear" name. Instead, it will be named after the show's three hosts — "Clarkson, Hammond, and May Live"

"Justice League: God and Monsters" is Timm's latest work, a shocking reinvention of the Justice League that's a complete 180 from his iconic DC Animated Universe. In this version, Batman is a vampire, Superman is the son of General Zod, and Wonder Woman is descended from Jack Kirby's New Gods as opposed to Greek Mythology.

While "Gods and Monsters" won't be available to watch until July 28, 2015, Timm will be rolling out three installments of "Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles" in the meantime — a series of animated shorts released on YouTube channel Machinima.

The first, "Twisted," has Batman (who is Kirk Langstrom aka Man-Bat here, not Bruce Wayne) hunting down Harley Quinn, who is more demented (and scantily clad) than ever before.

Snoop Dogg is suing PBR

Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg is suing Pabst Blue Ribbon.

On Monday, the SoCal rapper filed a suit over a deal he says entitles him a portion of the proceeds from the company's sale last year.

In 2011, Snoop Dogg signed a three-year agreement to endorse Colt 45's fruit-flavored malt beer Blast.

PBR owned Colt 45 and launched Blast in response to the success of sweet alcoholic energy drinks like Four Loko.

According to the lawsuit filed on Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Snoop is seeking 10% of the net sales price paid to Pabst for Blast. Last year, a group of investors bought PBR for $700 million.

The lawsuit states that Snoop's contract called for him to receive a portion of the sale price if Pabst sold its Colt 45 operations before January 2016. The lawsuit states Pabst told the rapper that the sale didn't trigger the clause entitling him to sale proceeds.

On Monday, Pabst pushed back against Snoop's allegations. A spokesperson for the company told Business Insider that Snoop Dogg has not contacted the company about the lawsuit.

"We have not been contacted by Snoop Dogg or his representatives about this issue," PBR representative Megan Gavigan said in an email. "We are investigating the matter and would be happy to talk to Snoop or his representatives to try to get to the bottom of this."

As part of his sponsorship, Snoop DJed PBR parties, played concerts hosted by the beer maker and made appearances at Blast events. Several years into his contract, Snoop also started working as an ambassador for Colt 45 itself. The brand crafted a campaign around Snoop Dogg called Keep It Colt 45.

The 'Ferris Bueller Fight Club' theory and other fan conspiracies are sending people on Reddit into a tailspin

ferris bueller's day off

Reddit is the online forum where diehard fans of everything from "Goodfellas" to Katy Perry's dancing Super Bowl sharks congregate.

So it makes sense that one of the most popular Ask Reddit threads this week had users divulging their favorite unauthorized and unofficial conspiracy theories behind popular TV shows, movies and books.

"What 'fan theories' have blown your mind with their devastating logic?" user Exdee1 asked. Redditors were happy to deliver their answers — a special kind of fanfic lite where back stories are invented by avid readers and watchers of franchises like "Star Wars," "Harry Potter," and even "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air."

Fan theories are part of a larger trend on Reddit; there's one whole section of the site called /r/fantheories, and the fan theory question has been posed on Ask Reddit before.

Twenty-four hours in, this most recent thread had accumulated 10,000 comments and counting. Here are some of the best theories we found. (Just keep in mind — these are unofficial and all in good fun. What they show more than anything is just how obsessive certain online fan groups can be.)

"Scooby Doo" is more political than you thought

"The original Scooby Doo series is set after a horrible economic depression," user King_of_Swag postulates. "Everything is abandoned and falling apart, and all of the villains are people who would normally be really respected (professors, museum curators, celebrities) who have fallen into hard times just like everyone else. How many times have the gang helped someone NOT go out of business?"

"I'm personally partial to the theory that they're draft dodgers during the Vietnam War," says liljakeyplzandthnx, while linking to another subreddit that enumerates that particular theory. "The show takes place in 1969, a big year for protesters. Fred's a draft-dodger on the run, Daphne's his fiancée, Shaggy's a nomadic hippy, and Velma's a campus activist."

There's a reason "Inspector Gadget" has a soft spot for Penny

"Inspector Gadget is actually an android who's been programmed to believe he's really Penny's uncle," yakusokuN8 writes. "Her real uncle was in a terrible accident, and left horribly disfigured, so that his voice is raspy, and his face is terribly mangled and never wants anyone to see it. That man is actually... Dr. Claw. Dr. Claw has been driven mad having lost everything and vows to destroy Inspector Gadget at every turn. This explains why Dr. Claw never hurts Penny, why a bumbling fool barely manages to function like a human adult, and why Dr. Claw is so hellbent on exacting revenge every episode."

"Aladdin" wasn't really set in the past

One redditor posted this meme, which postulates that the Genie in "Aladdin" was actually trapped in his lamp for 10,000 years, and that the world of "Aladdin" is actually post-apocalyptic. "How else could the genie do impressions of long-dead celebrities like Groucho Marx, Jack Nicholson, etc.?" it reads.

"The Magic School Bus" has a touch of "Doctor Who"

Reddit user psykulor postulates that fictional third-grade teacher Miss Frizzle, who owns a magic school bus that she uses to take her kids on field trips to caves, prehistoric times, and outer space, is a "time lord," borrowed from the "Doctor Who" franchise.

The evidence, according to psykulor:

  1. She's cheerfully blasé about the most perilous situations - clearly a trait of the species.
  2. She's in casual contact with aliens and parahumans.
  3. Most notably, she has a device which allows her to travel through time and relative dimensions in space (though she clearly prefers shrinking to time travel).

"The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" opening credits hid a dark secret

"Will was murdered on the basketball court in West Philly," user Naweezy posted. "The taxi driver is God (that's why we felt that the cab was different or "rare") [...]  God takes him heaven where he lives in a mansion with his wealthy aunt and uncle and slowly works out his issues and hardships."

Fresh Prince of Bel Air

In "Star Wars," the Emperor wasn't even focused on fighting the rebel forces

One user, BlackClaw24, dug deep into the archives of Reddit and located an exhaustive post from a similar thread started three years ago. It explains how the Emperor in "Star Wars" was not antagonizing Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, et al. Instead, he was preparing for extra-galactic invasion.

The thread goes on and on, and is a must-read for anyone who likes diving deep into the politics of "Star Wars."

Crossover theories

Of course, redditors don't stop at theories that explain the backstories of just one franchise at a time. They also put a considerable amount of thought into whether the fictional worlds of distinct movies and shows overlap.

Kevin from "Home Alone" becomes the twisted villain from the "Saw" movies

"I'm a big fan of the theory that Kevin from Home Alone grows up to be Jigsaw," writes DTRmageddon, linking to a Grantland story by Jason Concepcion diving deep on that particular hypothesis.

Home Alone 2

George Weasley from "Harry Potter" becomes Willy Wonka

"George Weasley goes on to become Willy Wonka," user PM_Me_Your_Asian_Self writes. "The scene where Willy has half of everything in his office kinda hints that he lost his better half, that is his brother who died."

This one seems like it could have legs — until you remember that the source material for "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" was written by Roald Dahl 33 years before the first "Harry Potter" book was published.

Plus, as user TomatoSlayer puts it, "I doubt even with magic could he make the snozzberries taste like snozzberries."

There's a link between "Sons of Anarchy," "Cops," "The X-Files," and more

"Sons of Anarchy shares a universe with Raising Hope, My Name is Earl, Cops and X-files," lokigodofchaos writes. "So in an episode of Raising Hope, Jimmy is going door to door for some reason. One of the doors he knocks on is answered by Filthy Phil wearing his Sons of Anarchy vest. On the first episode of Raising Hope, it me[n]tions a New Jersey man finally finished his karma list, a reference to My Name Is Earl. In an episode of Earl, they appear on Cops. The X-Files also had a Cops crossover."

Read farther down on that thread, and you'll see some redditors have pushed this even further to include "30 Rock" and "Arrested Development."

All of Quentin Tarantino's movies are connected — not just "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs"

Tarantino himself has admitted to the overlap between the worlds of two of his earliest films, "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction." Redditors have taken this even further, striving to link every one of Tarantino's films — even the World War II film "Inglourious Basterds." One redditor says the character called the Bear Jew is the father of a character in Tarantino's other film, "True Romance."

"Fight Club" and "Ferris Bueller" share one specific plot element

Redditor pbbtttb links to SlashFilm's theory that in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," Ferris doesn't exist. Instead, he's a manifestation of the more introverted Cameron's id — just like Tyler Durden, Brad Pitt's character in "Fight Club."

Why the stars of 'Jurassic Park' didn't return for the new movie

Jurassic ParkWhen "Jurassic World" arrives in theaters this Friday, it will be introducing the dinosaur-filled adventure franchise to a whole new generation … but it won’t be doing so with its original characters.

Despite having appeared in the previous two sequels, Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm, Sam Neill’s Alan Grant and Laura Dern’s Ellie Sattler do not make appearances in the new movie, and there’s a specific reason why not: Steven Spielberg really wanted to focus on the future instead of the past.

Jurassic ParkThis past weekend I had the great opportunity to sit down for a one-on-one interview with "Jurassic World" director Colin Trevorrow to talk about his upcoming blockbuster, and it was during our chat that I brought up the subject of "Jurassic Park"’s original trio of classic characters.

I asked the director if at any point there were any conversations about including them in the brand new sequel, and Trevorrow explained:

"They never were. I never saw a draft in which they were included, and I think I looked at every iteration at least once. That was because I think largely, and I’m sure the writers agree, but Steven had a mission to make something new, and he really wanted it to be a 'Jurassic Park' for a new generation. So that was always the mission - however different all of those movies were."

Ian Malcolm, Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler were all introduced in the first "Jurassic Park" - working together to try and survive the horrific events on Isla Nublar – but parted ways in the second and third chapters.

Malcolm was put front and center in the first sequel, "The Lost World: Jurassic Park," while Grant and Sattler both had roles in "Jurassic Park III" (though the former had a much bigger part than the latter). The only character from the original "Jurassic Park" featured in "Jurassic World" is BD Wong, who reprises his performance as geneticist Dr. Henry Wu (and has even been taking part in the movie’s viral marketing).

Jeff Goldblum Lost World Jurassic ParkSurely there will be some fans who are upset by this news, believing that "Jurassic Park" isn’t quite "Jurassic Park" without its original three main characters, but going in this direction does make a good amount of sense.

Steven Spielberg and Universal Pictures surely has big plans for the future of the franchise, and doing that requires moving forward instead of looking backward.

And what better time to do that then when you’re rejuvenating a franchise after a 14 year hiatus? Plus, there will surely be opportunities to bring them back some time in the future, and their return will only be more significant as more time passes.

Are you going to miss the original characters’ presence in "Jurassic World," or do you understand the desire to move on? Hit the comments with your thoughts.

'Creep' starring Mark Duplass is no-budget horror done right

creep duplass 2

Before you roll your eyes at yet another found footage movie, know that "Creep" has nothing to do with ghosts, exorcisms or teenage time travel.

It's a slow-burn thriller starring the incredibly in-demand indie filmmaker/sitcom star Mark Duplass playing completely against type, and boy is it unsettling and, well, really creepy.

"Creep" really makes the most of its bare-bones premise.

The film opens with Aaron (Patrick Brice) addressing the camera, stating that he has answered a Craigslist ad for a freelance video job and will be filming at this guy's house in the middle of the nowhere. The very instant Josef (Duplass) introduces himself, it's clear he's not quite right. Josef claims he is terminally ill and that he hired Aaron to follow him and film a sort of 'day-in-the-life' video for his unborn son.

Aaron sympathizes with Josef's sob story and agrees to go through with the unorthodox job. As the two spend more time together, Aaron begins to question Josef's motive. If this is all for his unborn son, where's his pregnant wife?

creep duplass 3It's a complete two-hander — the only characters on-screen the entire time are Duplass and Brice, both of whom had a part in writing the film (which feels pretty healthily improvised). "Creep" marks Brice's directorial debut, and having seen his follow-up "The Overnight" which is a hilarious comedy, it's clear he's here to stay. The man has already crafted two incredibly effective films in wildly different genres.

Just when you think you know where "Creep" is going, it makes a sharp turn and still manages to shock and surprise. While a lot of the beats of the story are easy to predict (it's pretty obvious Josef is psycho from the get-go, but Aaron doesn't figure it out for a while), the manner in which they reveal themselves is always fun to watch.

creep duplass 4"Creep" really thrives on Duplass' excellent performance, and it knows it. There are no frills here at all — the film is literally just a man with a camera talking to another man.  The super lo-fi feel works in context and never feels cheap or gimmicky like so many found footage movies do when they try to over explain the camera's presence.

If you're a horror aficionado or just a casual fan of Duplass who wants to see him have some fun, "Creep" will get the job done.

"Creep" will be available to rent/purchase via iTunes on June 23rd and will be streaming on Netflix July 14th.

"Jurassic World," the latest installment of the "Jurassic Park" franchise, will open this summer to fan expectations of bigger, better dinosaurs. While the studio might deliver on that front, this latest flick sadly continues a long "Jurassic" tradition of bad and incomplete science. Here's how "Jurassic World" still can't get the science right.

"Jurassic World" opens on Friday, June 12th.

Netflix just saved teen favorite 'Degrassi' from cancelation

degrassi going to netflix

Classes will continue at Degrassi Community School.

Netflix has picked up Canadian teen drama "Degrassi: The Next Generation" after last week's announcement by TeenNick that the show would end after 14 seasons this summer.

Netflix, in partnership with Canada's Family Channel, will air 20 new episodes of the series in 2016, though it will be retitled "Degrassi: New Class." Many of the show's stars are expected to reprise their roles on the next chapter of the franchise.

“We are energized and excited to work with Family Channel as we tell stories for the new post-millennial teen cohort known as Generation Z, most of whom weren’t even born when 'Degrassi' returned in 2001,” show co-creator and executive producer Linda Schuyler said in a statement to EW.

Netflix, like other streaming video companies such as Hulu and Yahoo, has been building a reputation for saving cult series from cancelation. Shows Netflix has brought back from the dead include "Arrested Development," "The Killing," and "Star Wars: The Clone Wars."

Netflix didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
