Most Powerful People 2015

True power is ageless.

From the toddling Prince George, third in line to the British throne, to 100-year-old Pulitzer Prize-winning author Herman Wouk, we found the most powerful person at every age from 1 to 100.

To create this list, we took four criteria into consideration: command, or the degree to which a person formally controls a group of people; past influence, or how much a person has changed the world; future influence, or how much a person is likely to change the world going forward; and net worth.

Spanning industries and time zones, these are the most powerful people, from 1 to 100.

AGE 1: Prince George of Cambridge

Heir to the British throne

What makes him powerful: After his grandfather and father, little George is next in line to succeed his great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. As an eight-month-old he took his first royal tour — a 19-day visit to New Zealand and Australia. He's also a tiny fashion icon, and he recently became a big brother to new princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

AGE 2: Macallister Bogue

Son of Marissa Mayer and Zach Bogue

What makes him powerful: While he's only a couple of years old, Bogue, son of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, still influences his mom's outlook at work. Though Mayer herself only took a few weeks off after giving birth, she doubled the amount of paid maternity leave Yahoo offers new mothers from eight to 16 weeks and offered new dads eight weeks as well.

AGE 3: Blue Ivy Carter

Daughter of Beyoncé and Jay Z

What makes her powerful: Nothing is too good for this power couple's little girl. Blue Ivy's second birthday was celebrated at the exotic Jungle Island in Miami; for her third, Blue got an ice sculpture with her name carved into it. Gwyneth Paltrow, who is good friends with the Knowles-Carter clan, said of Blue Ivy: "She is a powerhouse. I love her so much."

The film industry is on the precipice of a fundamental shift

House of Cards

Revenue generated from electronic home video is expected to surpass that of the US cinema by 2018, making it the lead revenue generator in the filmed-entertainment market, according to a new report from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC).

Electronic home video — which encompasses video streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, premium-cable channels like HBO and Starz, and on-demand programming — will generate $13.8 billion in revenue in 2018 in the US, compared to $13.1 billion in revenue for the cinema industry.

Electronic home video revenue includes rentals and subscriptions to premium-cable services and streaming platforms, while cinema revenue comprises the box office and advertising.

Overall, electronic home video service is expected to double in revenue from $8.4 billion in 2014 to $16.54 billion in 2019, making the annual growth rate 14.6%. Over that same time, cinema revenue is expected to grow at a more modest rate of 3.9%, from $11.2 billion in 2014 to $13.5 billion in 2019.

PwC determined these numbers in their Global Entertainment and Media Outlook for 2015 to 2019, released on Tuesday. In it, the firm forecasts what will drive consumer spending and advertising revenues directly related to entertainment and media content over the next five years.

"Film’s status as the prime storytelling medium in pop culture is still acknowledged but, in an era of Netflix, HBO and Showtime, high-end TV drama is making inroads into cinema’s dominance, and many OTT services (services that provide content through the internet) have announced they will start making films," said Todd Supplee, Senior Director with PwC’s Entertainment, Media & Communications practice.

Deadline Hollywood film critic Mike Fleming recently wrote that watching the HBO drama "True Detective" and the critically acclaimed Netflix series "House of Cards" got him "really depressed" about the movie business.

"Those series and 10 more like them are better than anything I see on a movie screen," Fleming said. "Movies seem at a low creative ebb, compared to pay and basic cable outlets soaring with boldness and creativity."

hannibal season 3Warning: There are spoilers ahead!

If you tuned into the season 3 premiere of "Hannibal," there was a huge cameo; however, you may have easily missed it!

About 30 minutes into the episode, we see Bedelia (Gillian Anderson) mere inches away from a man lying on the floor who died at her hands.

bedelia corpse hannibalNormally, you wouldn't think to pay so much attention to a corpse lying in the background.

But when Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) passes by it, you get a glimpse of the actor lying on the floor.

hannibal zachary quintoAt this point, you may still dismiss the lifeless actor on the ground; however, the series then showed him head on.

Let's take a closer look.

zachary quinto hannibalLook familiar?

Yup. That's Zachary Quinto of "Star Trek" and "Heroes" fame playing a corpse!

Zachary Quinto Star Trek Into Darkness UK premiereFans of the series will know series showrunner Bryan Fuller previously worked with Quinto on another NBC series, "Heroes." On that show, Quinto was a vicious serial killer himself, so it's kind of funny to see him dead on a series about another serial killer — especially without a line of dialogue.

Don't worry.

This won't be the last we see of him.

Fuller teased online during the season premiere we'll see more of the actor in episode 10.

"Hannibal" is on NBC Thursday nights at 10 p.m.

The 'Entourage' movie will completely destroy your childhood image of Haley Joel Osment

Entourage Movie

If you head out to see "Entourage" this weekend, you'll most likely have an enjoyable time.

Despite the harsh critiques the film adaptation of the popular HBO series is receiving, the film basically plays out like an extended episode of the HBO series. It's crass; it's funny, and it's filled with plenty of star power from a number of celebrity cameos to keep you looking for more.

Whether or not you end up agreeing with the critics, one thing's certain — the film will shatter your childhood image of Haley Joel Osment forever.

You know, this Haley Joel Osment — the kid best known for uttering the words, "I see dead people" in 1999's "The Sixth Sense."

haley joel osment sixth sense

This was the role for which Osment became known as one of the cutest child stars of the early 2000s.

He later appeared in "Pay It Forward," where he played a middle-school student who creates a good-deeds community program. We saw him again in "A.I. Artificial Intelligence," where he played an android who could love, and "Secondhand Lions," as an introverted teen living on a farm, before the actor disappeared from the Hollywood scene.

Pay It ForwardIf you haven't seen him recently, you may be wondering what he's been up to in the 12 or so years since then.

He started voicing a character in sequels of the popular video game "Kingdom Hearts" before reemerging into the acting scene. He did a voiceover on Seth MacFarlane's "American Dad!" and in 2014 appeared on TV miniseries "The Spoils of Babylon" and Amazon's "Alpha House."

If you weren't aware of Osment's role in the "Entourage" film, it's a big shock to see him on screen, and in such a large role.

However, it's even more disorienting once you learn his role is a far cry from anything he played as a child.

Osment plays Travis McCredle, a spoiled, foul-mouthed redneck millionaire Texan.

haley joel osment entouragehaley joel osment billy bob thornton entourageThere's a scene of Osment in a hotel room with two women and it will definitely ruin your image of the little boy from M. Night Shyamalan's 1999 hit.

McCredle is quite the obnoxious, egotistical monster to the Entourage boys, and Osment plays the character to a tee.

I don't remember the last time I've hated a character on screen so much.

However, that's how you know he's good.

Osment was a good actor 15 years ago — he was nominated for an Oscar for his role in "The Sixth Sense"— and he's grown into a fine one today.

He has a few more projects coming up this year including a film with Richard Armitage, "Sleepwalker," and "Me and Her," which has been described as a "sexual-identity comedy."

Here's to seeing more of him!

The real reason celebrities show up to Wal-Mart's shareholders meeting

Wal-Mart shareholdersReese Witherspoon stood before thousands of screaming Wal-Mart workers Friday and led a "USA" chant at the company's annual shareholders meeting.

She spoke lovingly of the world's largest retailer, saying Wal-Mart is "redefining retail" and delivering "miracles" to mothers all across the country with services like click-and-collect grocery shopping.

Witherspoon, who was the host of Friday's event in Fayetteville, Arkansas, wasn't paid for her appearance. Musicians Mariah Carey, Rod Stewart, Brian McKnight, and Ricky Martin also performed free of cost at the annual meeting.

Mariah CareyThese stars usually command six-figure payments for performances and appearances. So what's in it for them?

"Every entertainer that is here has something to do with our business," Wal-Mart spokesperson Dianna Gee told MSNBC during the equally star-studded event in 2013. "There’s some connection from the business, whether it’s CDs, books, or t-shirts." Film studios and record labels "really work with us" to recruit the performers, she added.

Wal-Mart shareholdersHer explanation makes sense. As one of the world's largest retailers, Wal-Mart has access to 35 million shoppers daily.

If the company decides to feature a DVD or album, sales of those items could spike.

Rod StewartA Wal-Mart spokesman confirmed to Business Insider last year none of the celebrities are paid for their appearances at the annual meeting.

Musicians Pharrell Williams, Robin Thicke, Sarah McLaughlin, Aloe Blacc and Harry Connick Jr. performed last year. Two years ago, celebrity guests included Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Tom Cruise, and Hugh Jackman.

Wal-Mart shareholder's meetingThis year's event drew about 14,000 people, including workers and shareholders, from around the world.

The meeting is mostly a pep rally of sorts, with celebrity performances punctuated by speeches from Wal-Mart executives on their plans for the future of the company.

It has been three long years, but we’re finally getting our first look at Steven Spielberg’s next movie.

The famed director’s latest effort is “Bridge of Spies”, a Cold War period piece that tells the story of James Donovan (Tom Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer recruited by the CIA to negotiate with the Soviet Union for the release of a captured American U-2 pilot.

The catch, of course, is that he’s supposed to arrange for the release of a Soviet spy — something that will make him one of the most reviled men in the country.

With a script co-written by Matt Charman and the Coen brothers ("Fargo"), "Bridge of Spies" opens in US theaters on October 16, 2015.

The 10 most disturbingly gorgeous dishes from NBC's 'Hannibal'

hannibal cooking fixed

NBC's "Hannibal" is a series that is appealing for many reasons, but a big one is obvious from day one: The food.

"Hannibal" is lavish in its attentions to all things culinary, putting together better shot and more artfully presented food porn than anything you'll see on Food Network.

Of course, food is also where the show gets most of its horror from, given its subject's horrific palate. The dishes cooked by Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) often appear succulent and lovely; revolting to the viewer only because they know where they come from (and sometimes, they still look good).

Much of this is thanks to the work of "Hannibal" food stylist Janice Poon, who runs lengthy postmortems of the show's dishes—complete with non-cannibal recipes—on her blog, Feeding Hannibal. It's a page you may want to bookmark with "Hannibal" season 3 now upon us.

("Aperitif," season 1, episode 1): Hannibal's first scene has him dining on what looks like veal. It's probably not veal.

("Amuse-Bouche," season 1, episode 2): Hannibal serves Jack Crawford what he calls Pork Loin with Red Fruit Cumberland Sauce. While we don't see him kill anyone, we probably shouldn't trust him.

("Oeuf,"season 1, episode 4): Hannibal calls this elegant dish "rabbit." It's a person. Surprise!

There is a huge problem with advertising on YouTube, and one of the site’s biggest networks has a plan to fix it

$

0

youtube afkYouTube can be a wild west for content. Independent creators put out videos as they see fit, and advertisers often don't know anything about the content that will appear with their ads.

This environment means YouTube ads make far less money than cable TV ads, which give advertisers more power over the content that appears with their ads.

For a YouTube network like Machinima, which already splits its ad revenue between YouTube and its partner YouTube creators, those slim margins can make for a difficult business model.

Over the last year and a half, three former television executives — CEO Chad Gutstein, CRO Jamie Weissenborn, and CCO Daniel Tibbets— have been brought into the company to change those margins. They're looking towards television’s business model to do so.

Machinima (1 of 46)

“When you think about how traditional media is sold and why it has the value it has, it is because brands want to know what they are advertising around,” Weissenborn told Business Insider.

Machinima serves a core audience of 20-something lovers of video games, comic books, and other aspects of “fandom” culture.

To corral some of YouTube’s "wild west" quality, Weissenborn and Tibbets have been building out an editorial calendar that includes upcoming events important to the Machinima community like E3 and Pax Prime and new video game, movie, and television releases.

The team is then working with their in-house talent, as well as their 32,000 partnered YouTube creators, to develop content around those events and releases. Tibbets and Weissenborn hope that by doing so they can take some of the guesswork out of advertising campaigns on YouTube.

Machinima (3 of 46)

“When we work with talent to create a particular show or programming schedule, suddenly, you can pitch brands. We can say, ‘This is what this YouTuber is doing over this period of time that we think will be really interesting to you as an advertiser,’” Tibbets explains. “Suddenly, what we do becomes more tangible to advertisers.”

Additionally, Machinima is trying to take the guesswork out of YouTube advertising by building shows they can sell sponsorships on. A prime example is "Away From Keyboard," a reality show featuring Machinima-partnered YouTube stars that was originally sponsored by Geico, but has since been taken over by Acura.

“The value of ["Away From Keyboard"] is that advertisers know exactly the show that they are getting and the talent benefits by being in the show … Using that, we can tell brands that, like television, we’ll be doing this show in October or this show in December,” Weissenborn says.

According to Weissenborn, the strategy has been working. In recent months, the team has been able to sell campaigns topping $1 million-$1.5 million. A few years ago, that deal size would have been unthinkable for Machinima.

The night before we went in to renegotiate, I got a call from a friend who had connections high up at ABC and he said, 'They're going to hang a nun in the marketplace and the nun is Suzanne.' The network was willing to do this because earlier that year the women on Laverne & Shirley had gotten what they asked for and they wanted to put a stop to it. Elisabeth Moss says this memorable ‘Mad Man’ scene was not fun to shoot

Peggy Mad Men

Peggy Olson was a fan favorite on “Mad Men” for many reasons, so it was no surprise when the internet went nuts over Peggy’s strut into the offices of McCann Erickson at the end of the “Lost Horizon” episode.

But at an appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on Thursday night, Elisabeth Moss, who played Olson, said shooting this now famous scene was not fun to do.

“It was not cool at all," she told Meyers.

"I was holding this box, and everything on ‘Mad Men' is super real so they made the box really heavy. I was like, ‘I can act that,’ but no.”

peggy stroll 1“The painting was kind of awkward and kind of large [to carry] and they wanted me to hold it [a certain way] so you can see it in certain shots.”

peggy stroll 2“And the cigarette is actually really difficult to do. James Dean makes it look super cool and easy but it's actually really hard to hold a cigarette in your mouth and walk.”

peggy stroll 3“So I was trying to look cool, trying to not drop the painting, trying to not bump into the walls.”

But there was something fun Moss got out of the experience. She chose the on-set music to walk to.

“I was like ‘Stayin' Alive,’ obviously," she told Meyers, referring to the Bee Gees song. “I'm walking down a hallway, what else would I be listening to?”

All New_All Different_Marvel_Promo_1_by_David_Marquez

The Marvel Universe is over. Time to get a look at what comes next.

Marvel has just released two new teasers for the rebuilt, "All New, All-Different" Marvel Universe it will be launching in the wake of "Secret Wars" — the ongoing story that destroyed the Marvel Universe in its first issue, and will determine how it's rebuilt by the final issue. The teaser images feature art by David Marquez and colorist Matthew Wilson, and depict a remixed lineup of marquee heroes for Marvel's future.

Most of the heroes are, naturally, recognizable from the Marvel Cinematic Universe—particularly in the first image, where the only obscure character is Red Wolf—the publisher's first Native American character with a history stretching back to the 1970s.

Take a closer look at them below:

Skitched Marvel_Promo_1_by_David_MarquezHowever, it's worth noting that it seems to indicate that the companies recent big changes—namely the new, female Thor and Sam Wilson as Captain America—aren't going to be undone, and two popular alternate-universe characters (Gwen "Spider-Gwen" Stacey and Miles Morales as Spider-Man) are joining the mainstream universe in a big way.

The second image is where things get interesting. It's full of less recognizable or seemingly recontextualized characters.

Skitched Marvel_Promo_2

There's a lot to think about here: Is the Fantastic Four character The Thing now being treated as a Guardian of the Galaxy? Will Wolverine's female clone X-23 assume the iconic role while the older version of Logan (From the "Old Man Logan" stories) looks on? And are they really going to be using Dr. Spectrum from Jonathan Hickman's "A Perfect World" arc on "New Avengers?"

Who knows, man.

What we do know is that Marvel will be attempting a massive, ambitious relaunch this fall, with new first issues for every series — most of them set eight months after "Secret Wars."

On an extremely superficial level, it sounds like DC's New 52 initiative (which went poorly), but if you've been following "Secret Wars," it's quite apparent the publisher has been taking its time with this in a way that feels much more organic (particularly if you've been reading writer Jonathan Hickman's run on "Avengers" for the past three years).

Granted, it can be kind of frustrating to be following a big, ongoing story like "Secret Wars" and already start seeing bits of the endgame creep out when it's not even half done, but superhero comics trade on hype and speculation, and, the more questions fans have, the more books they'll want to read.

Like, why is Iron Man the only hero in both of these images, and is he really Tony Stark? We'll have to wait and see!

The director who bowed out of the 'Star Wars’ spinoff says he left because fans aren’t nice

josh trank fantastic four final

Rumors that director Josh Trank's time might be over in that galaxy far, far away came to the surface when he was a shocking no-show at the "Star Wars Celebration" in April.

Pegged to direct a spinoff of the saga, his absence at the fan convention started whispers that he might get booted off the project. That was then confirmed two weeks after "Celebration" when Lucasfilm announced that Trank was no longer the director of their anthology film.

Trade papers The Hollywood Reporter and Variety made it sound like Trank — who is the director of the upcoming "Fantastic Four” reboot — was fired due to “erratic” behavior on the set of “Four” and that the director had a rift with its co-writer/producer Simon Kinder, who is also a producer on the “Star Wars” spinoff. However Trank, in his first interview addressing the matter, told the L.A. Times that he wasn't fired.

Trank said he walked away from the "Star Wars" universe because of the criticism he's taken from the “Fantastic Four” fan community.

“I want to do something original after this because I’ve been living under public scrutiny, as you’ve seen, for the last four years of my life,” Tank told the L.A. Times, referring to his time making "Fantastic Four.” “And it’s not healthy for me right now in my life. I want to do something that’s below the radar.”

Part of that “public scrutiny” was the decision to change the race of the The Human Torch, which will be played by Michael B. Jordan (“Fruitvale Station”).

Micahel B Jordan Fantastic Four Alan Markfield FoxTrank also denies the allegations that he was erratic on the set of “Fantastic Four.”

Kinberg came to Trank's defense in the Times story: “This, I would say, is particularly cruel. I haven’t really seen this level of vehemence against a filmmaker. And it’s surreal and unfair."

Trank had spent a year developing the “Star Wars” spinoff, Lucasfilm is currently looking for his replacement as it continues to develop the project.

Filmmakers having to deal with passionate fans is nothing new, but since the advent of the Internet, and particularly social media, they have become susceptible to the positive and negative feedback on a more intimate level.

Joss Whedon AvengersFollowing the release of "Avengers: Age of Ultron," Joss Whedon shut down his Twitter account. Whedon told BuzzFeed it was because he was going to start writing a new project, but the death threats were probably a motivation to stop looking at his feed as well.

And this quote from George Lucas — perhaps one of the longest sufferers of fan backlash — following the sale of Lucasfilm showed up in Vanity Fair’s May cover story on “The Force Awakens” and mirrors Trank's attitude:

“It was fine before the Internet… But now . . . it’s gotten very vicious and very personal. You just say, ‘Why do I need to do this?’”

NBC's binge-watching plan for 'Aquarius' isn't the game-changer we were hoping for

NBC's decision to release the entire season of new Charles Manson drama "Aquarius" was a bold move toward broadcast networks offering viewers the same binge-watching experience offered by streaming video companies such as Netflix and Amazon.

But alas, "Aquarius" won't be the show that will inspire such change. Business Insider spoke to several individuals, who asked to remain anonymous, about NBC's "Aquarius" experiment.

"This isn't a gamechanger," one individual from a rival network told BI. "That's not to say that someone else can do a similar kind of release and be more successful, but this wasn't it."

The drama's lackluster ratings and unclear revenue strategy has insiders at other major networks unimpressed and scratching their heads.

The ratings aren't convincing

NBC premiered the show last Thursday ahead of releasing the entire season to OK numbers. It earned a 1.05 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49-year-old audience and 5.7 million viewers.

nbc aquarius gethin anthony Charles Manson.JPGWhen looking at the L+3 ratings, which include On Demand viewing but not online and streaming for the first three days, "Aquarius" increased by 35% in the 18-49 demo and added 1.5 million additional viewers. Again, good increases, but not necessarily impressive at these low numbers.

The next test would arrive in Week 2, after NBC released the entire 13-episode season.

Its second episode came up against tough competition from Thursday's NBA finals, plus it got the expected viewer erosion shows experience in the week after a premiere. It earned a 0.7 in the ad demo and just 3.9 million viewers.

It's hard to tell how much binge-watching cannibalized the live ratings with the NBA finals as part of the equation, but one insider believed that NBC wouldn't have done well anyway.

"The drop off was going to happen. It got more drop-off than say Fox," the individual said. Fox had actually placed second for ratings on Thursday night after ABC.

Another insider said, "There's no real way to know how ['Aquarius'] would've done."

Is NBC even making money?

Despite NBC's deal with a limited amount of advertisers for the show both on-air and in online/streaming, all of our insiders wondered how NBC was making any money.

nbc aquarius actresses.JPG"We still get most of our revenue from advertising, for better or for worse," one said. "I don't think NBC is making money."

The insider added, "I don't know what NBC knew, but my gut feeling was that 'Aquarius' was not a good show and NBC just wanted it out and over with. The binge-watching stunt gave a dog more attention than it would've gotten. So in that respect, NBC was successful."

Another insider said that NBC, which ended the 2014-2015 season as the highest-rated network, is in a position to experiment.

"NBC is trying different things," he said. "If it does well, then they'll take credit for it."

NBC didn't respond to BI's request for comment for this article, though the spokesperson did say the network doesn't plan on releasing "Aquarius'" streaming numbers (taking another page from the streaming companies which don't report their numbers).

Streaming will have its day

At any rate, our insiders agree that offering binge-watching isn't something the networks can ignore forever and will have to deal with at some point.

"I've spoken to some high level executives who say we'll all be Netflix in the future," the other network source said. "That day is still very far off."

NBC can still say it was the first to try it.

Rapper 50 Cent is the latest musician to speak out against Jay Z's $9.99-per-month artist-owned music-streaming service, Tidal.

During an interview with the Los Angeles radio station REAL 92.3, the rapper was asked his thoughts on the service.

"They probably could've did something more exciting if they reached out, because the people you saw there don't even own the rights to their music," he said. "So they can't say it's gonna come out of Tidal. It has to go everywhere."

Essentially, 50 Cent is saying people don't need to pay upward of $9.99 a month for music that will be available elsewhere, including rival streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify. In other words, he says, "Why would you actually buy Tidal to get something that would be everywhere else?"

In March, Jay Z debuted Tidal with a star-studded presentation that included Usher, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Kanye West, Daft Punk, Arcade Fire, Beyoncé, and many others.

jay z tidal"Usher was there and Madonna and all these people. That's a little bit more of a, when you say, 'It was business,' it's more of a corporate play," 50 Cent said. "When the record is playing on the air, they say, 'Oh, all right. Let's get this guy.'

"The companies have contracts, and companies are gonna do everything to get the maximum performance out of the music," he added. "They're not going to just put it through Tidal as a service."

Jay Z bought Tidal in January for a reported $56 million with the intention of creating the world's first streaming platform owned by musicians. The service pays established musicians for use of their music.

Subscribers can also receive some exclusive content, such as Beyoncé's recent track that coincided with her and Jay Z's wedding anniversary.

Death Cab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard told The Daily Beast in April: "I think they totally blew it by bringing out a bunch of millionaires and billionaires and propping them up onstage and then having them all complain about not being paid. That's why this thing is going to fail miserably."

Mumford and Sons front man Marcus Mumford added: "We want people to listen to our music in their most comfortable way, and if they're not up for paying for it, I don't really care."

Singer Lily Allen, too, tweeted: "I love Jay Z so much, but TIDAL is so expensive compared to other perfectly good streaming services ... He's taken the biggest artists & made them exclusive to TIDAL (am i right in thinking this ?), people are going to swarm back to pirate sites in droves sending traffic to torrent sites. Up and coming (not yet millionaires) artists are going to suffer as a result … my concern is that Tidal may set emerging artists back."

In April 2015, Victoria's Secret announced its newest lineup of "angels."

These 10 women would be the faces — and bodies — of the iconic lingerie company.

One of these women is Elsa Hosk, a gorgeous 26-year-old Swedish model who has been making a name for herself for the past few years as one of the faces of Victoria's Secret's younger brand, PINK. But now, she's in a whole new class.

Not every model ascends to this level of recognition, but Elsa did — and we're only going to be seeing more of her in the years to come.

Elsa is a pro now, but every supermodel has to start out somewhere. She has said she first started visiting modeling agencies when she was 13 years old — so her career has been more than a decade in the making.

But she had another passion: basketball.

She balanced modeling with basketball, which was no easy feat. "I played on a professional level until I was 17," she told Ground Mag. "Combined with school and modeling, it was a lot of work – but I loved it."
