nic cage doppelganger

When an authentic Civil War photo emerged last year, everyone buzzed about the solider's resemblance to actor Nicolas Cage

But Cage isn't the only celebrity with a historical doppelganger.

Turns out there's a whole community of people, from TotallyLooksLike.com to YouTube, who post photos of famous people and their historical lookalikes.

While some people think that the celebrities are actually vampires, others believe in the conspiracy theories that the famous people are clones or descendants of former politicians, artists, philosophers and even criminals.

But most just take it all in good fun.

We selected some of the most uncanny doppelgangers from YouTube compilations. From Keanu Reeves to Ellen Degeneres, you'll definitely be shocked by the resemblance.

Here's Nic Cage and his doppelganger. Little is known about the man besides that he supposedly served in the Civil War.

Here's Justin Timberlake, who uncannily resembles this old-time criminal in a mug shot.

Rupert Grint from "Harry Potter" looks like Scottish painter Sir David Wilkie.

Lady Gaga Announces New Album Title By Tattooing It On Her Body

Lady Gaga ARTPOP TattooLady Gaga has just revealed the name of her highly-anticipated follow up album to her hugely successful 2011 album, "Born This Way."

The name of the new "project," as Gaga calls it, is ... drumroll please ...

ARTPOP.

Gaga's three prior albums have all sold at least 6 million copies apiece, so anything less will look like a decline in her pulling power.

Gaga will never forget the name of her latest album, as she recently had it tattooed on her arm. But Lady G wants you to make note of the proper spelling as well, tweeting, "make sure when writing about my new album/project ARTPOP that you CAPITALIZE the title, *its all in the details*"

The album doesn't yet have a release date, but is expected to drop in late 2012 or early 2013, according to The Hollywood Reporter, who also surmise that the album name could be an acronym for "Artistic Revolution Through the Potential of Pop"—which is written on the singer's Little Monsters website—or possibly a reference to pop artist Andy Warhol.

Whatever the real meaning behind the name and tattoo, the album has a lot to live up to after Gaga's last album "Born This Way" sold 1.1 million copies in its first week alone and as of April 2012, sold nearly six million copies.

Gaga's 2008 debut album "The Fame" and follow up album "The Fame Monster," have sold 15 million albums worldwide each, according to concert promoter LiveNation, while her hit singles have combined sales of over 65 million worldwide.

Gaga is the only artist in the digital era to top the five million sales mark with her first two hits. We'll see if ARTPOP will be born the same way.

Anthony Bourdain-Travel Channel to CNN

Travel show host Anthony Bourdain announced that he was leaving his long-time gig at Travel Channel for CNN back in May. His new show will hit the air in early 2013.

So, his fans want to know — why'd he leave the Travel Channel?

Adweek interviewed Bourdain and asked him that very question. Here's what he had to say:

"There are a lot of places where me and my team have been wanting to make television for a long time and haven’t been able to. And CNN has the infrastructure and inclination to make those places doable.

Getting to do a show in, for instance, Libya would have been very difficult. We have contacts all over the world, but you’ve got to get there.

When we finally got out of Beirut with my crew in 2006, an LCU [Landing Craft Utility, a ship for troop transport] comes in with the Marines and the door drops and the first person we see is [CNN correspondent] Barbara Starr—you know, they’re there. ... [Also], I like when the people who live in the places where we shoot are really happy afterward."

73-Year-Old Sues 26-Year-Old Ex For Dumping Him After He Bought Her An Apartment

natasha diamond walker

A 73-year-old Italian director is suing his 26-year-old ex-girlfriend because he says she dumped him after he bought her a $775,000 Manhattan apartment.

Antonio Calenda filed the suit against Natasha Diamond-Walker in Manhattan Supreme Court, Dareh Gregorian at the New York Post reported

"She “manipulated [Calenda] into buying her lavish gifts during the course of their relationship,” the suit says.

In May — only three months after they started dating — she asked for “financial assistance” so she could buy an apartment she wanted near Lincoln Center, the filing says."

The loan agreement said she had until 2018 to pay the money back with no interest.

Perhaps Calenda should have taken notes from George Soros on buying pricey apartments for beautiful young women. The billionaire's exgirlfriend sued him last year for allegedly reneging on a deal to buy her a $1.9 million pad.

We're working on getting a copy of the lawsuit and have contacted Marc Fitapelli, Calenda's attorney.

What It's Really Like To Win On 'The Price Is Right'

$

Price Is Right AMA

Getting to compete on the "The Price Is Right" is the stuff of pop culture fantasy. Who didn't want to spin the wheel and dream of Bob Barker asking them to "come on down"?

One Reddit user named Rocky_Whore got to do just that and shared his experience on the site. Read on for the highlights from his "Ask Me Anything" thread to learn what it's like to spin the wheel, how to tune out the audience, and whether contestants are really picked at random.

On whether he listened to the audience:

"I pulled my wife's voice out and she helped me decide things. Other than her and my kids, I tried to tune everyone else out."

What it's like to spin that wheel:

"Exactly what you would think," says Rocky_Whore. "Heavy and slow."

Who gets chosen to "come on down":

"It's not random. They interview each person before the show to see who would fit best on TV ... Everyone is just in a big line and they go down asking questions."

The taxes he paid on those prizes:

"I won $57,069 worth of items. I had to pay around $17,000 or $20,000 in taxes, but I'm not 100% on that. I tried not to pay attention ... I'm more shocked Olympians have to pay taxes on their medals."

If he would have won more if Bob Barker was hosting:

"No, Drew Carey was awesome."

If there's an option to take a cash amount of equal or lesser value of the prizes:

"Not really, but we won an Apple computer and Apple doesn't ship their items so we got the money for it (we used that for taxes, though). We also had the option to take money for the poker table because it was going to take a long time to ship."

The surprising thing he learned behind the scenes:

"The paper work took maybe two hours to fill out because I won the showcase and they made me stay last. During that two hours I was talking to a guy that worked there. The guy was saying how quite a few people give up their prize because of the crazy taxes. One guy won a $10,000 cash prize and didn't take it because he didn't want to pay half to his ex-wife."

How practical the prizes are:

"The washer and dryer were perfect. We got them the day after we moved into our new house. The car was perfect because I was looking for a new car for my wife anyways. I gave my son the 2 mountain bikes to keep or sell (he is a professional cyclist, so he likes his bikes) the diner table and poker table don't get used too much, but they are nice to have when we have a party or something. The trip to washington [sic] was great too, we have always wanted to go there.

Paramount Purchases Sacha Baron Cohen Spy Spoof

$

Sacha-Baron-Cohen"Borat" star Sacha Baron Cohen and comedy writer Phil Johnston just sold a pitch for a spy-spoof project to Paramount for a figure in the high-six to low-seven range, reports Variety

The pitch concerns a "Bond-like spy forced to go on the run with his long-lost brother, a moronic soccer hooligan."

And Paramount, currently the only studio to not cross the $1 billion mark internationally this year, are in need of a hit.

Perhaps the studio sees hope in Baron Cohen, whose 2006 film "Borat" earned $261,572,744 worldwide. Hopefully, the spy spoof will do better than the actor's latest film "The Dictator," which had a production budget of $65 million but grossed barely $60 million domestically.

No word yet on whether Baron Cohen would play the spy, the brother or even both in the film, as the actor did have a dual role in May's "The Dictator." But both spy spoof roles appear to lend themselves to British actors, and if he decides to play just one, it would be fun to see Baron Cohen play against his Borat/Bruno-type as a suave spy.

Johnston, who has previously written screenplays for "Cedar Rapids" and the upcoming Alexander Payne movie "Nebraska," will now work with Baron Cohen to pen the full script for Paramount.

barter-kings

We're always intrigued when consumers manage to haggle their way to killer deals, which might explain our fascination with A&E's reality show "Barter Kings"

The show stars Antonio Palazzola and Steve McHugh, the owners of Express Trade, a modern day trading post in California. On a weekly basis, they barter their way to a cool $3,000-$5,000 each, one trade at a time.

Their strategy is simple: start with something of relatively little value and keep making trades until they've got something worth a whole lot more.

Last week we showed how they got nearly free publicity.

When Steve and Antonio decide to do something nice for their families, they set their sights on this log cabin in the wilds of California.

Owner Heidi has been struggling to sell the place, so she's open to a trade. All they have to do is find a new forklift for her son's construction business by the end of the week.

Any good barterer knows to start off a trade with a unique item, so Steve decides to see how much his prized accordion, valued at $300, will fetch online.

THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT: Cablevision Posts Increase In Hard-Wired Phone Subscriptions (CVC)

telephone

Last week we reported on the long, slow death of television and how Comcast, DirecTV, and Time Warner Cable had lost thousands of subscribers.

During the second quarter, cable providers often experience a decrease in subscriptions as summer is the prime time to plan a move and college students cancel their cable subscriptions.

But not all cable companies are suffering. Cablevision Systems just reported a strong second quarter that looks like it came straight from the 1980s: It actually increased numbers for hard-wired telephone subscribers.

(Revenue rose 0.5 percent to $1.70 billion. Net income was $63.8 million, a decrease from their $87.8 million this time last year.)

High speed data subscriptions rose by 25,000, with a total of 3.3 million customers, while subscriptions for telephone subscriptions now sit at 2.4 million, after a 23,000 increase. Cable video subs were flat, and therefore better than the declines being seen at other operators.

In part, it's about pricing: Earlier in 2011, Jim Dolan, CEO of Cablevision, announced that rates for the triple-play package and hardware would remain untouched throughout 2012. In comparison, Verizon, their main rival, saw marginal price increases on their FiOS TV programming and equipment packages.

"We are continuing to invest in our operations to ensure that we are offering the best products and service to our customers,” Dolan announced. “Our focus on transforming the way we operate has never been stronger.”

Meanwhile, normality appears to be in full effect at Charter Communications. The fourth largest American cable operator saw a 4.7% rise in revenue to $1.88 billion, despite a loss of 66,000 basic cable subscribers.

Tom Rutledge, CEO and President of Charter, announced, "we delivered solid second quarter performance while implementing key aspects of our growth strategy. In addition to enhancing our product set and launching new pricing and packaging, we're putting into action a number of operational changes to best align the organization with our growth objectives. These actions will make us more competitive, deliver a powerful customer experience and increase our long-term growth potential."

Entourage Debi Mazar

Business Insider needs your help.

We are putting together a list of the most powerful publicists in the entertainment industry, and we want to know who you think makes the cut.

From New York to Los Angeles, which celebrity or studio publicists have had a great year and an overall impressive career?

We are looking for people who can make or break a celeb's career, expertly manage scandalous situations, have an extensive Rolodex of media contacts, can get a meeting with anyone in town and have put their own lives on hold to babysit celebrities and promote their latest projects.

Here's the drill:

  • If you are nominating someone from your own company, we ask you to ALSO nominate two other publicists from different or competing companies, to ensure that your nominations aren't self-serving and to make sure our list isn't too fluffy. Those last two nominations will be treated in complete confidence -- no one will know who you named from other companies. We promise.
  • Then send an email to aweisman@businessinsider.com explaining why you believe the publicist should be on the list. Consider client roster, achievements and relationships.
  • Lastly, if you have a nice big photo of the publicist, please attach that to your email along with photo credit information and confirmation that we can publish it should the executive make the list.
  • Deadline for nominations: Aug. 14.

Universal Sets Record For Fastest Climb To $1B In Studio History

Ted movie teddy bear

Universal may not be first to the party, but they're just happy to be there this early.

According to Deadline, the studio just passed the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office—a number it took them a full year to reach in 2011. In 2010 and 2009, they didn't even hit the mark, but this year the studio reached the milestone a full three months faster than at any point in their history.

Disney, Warner Bros., and Sony have already reached the milestone earlier this summer, thanks largely to a trio of superhero films you may have heard about—"The Avengers," "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Amazing Spiderman," respectively.

But Universal did it the old fashioned way, with star-driven hits (Mark Wahlberg appears in two of their five biggest hits of the year) and calculated risks (foul-mouthed teddy bears come to mind). Four of their films were $100 million-plus earners, with two coming in the first quarter of 2012, and another two in the summer.

In February, the Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington action film "Safe House" delivered better than expected numbers, followed a month later by their biggest earner of the year so far "The Lorax" which debuted to over $70 million on its way to a $214 million finish. "Snow White and the Huntsman" won the battle of the Snow White movies, netting a cool $154 million. The real winner for the studio is "Ted" which passed the $200 million mark this weekend and will surpass "Lorax" as their highest-grossing film of the year in a couple weeks.

Other middling successes for the studio include "Contraband," "American Reunion," and "Savages." All will finish within the $70-50 million range.

Less-performing films on their 2012 roster include "Wanderlust," "The Five-Year Engagement," and "Big Miracle," all earning between $30-15 million

Universal does have one glaring miss this year, the box-office bomb, "Battleship," though even that domestic dud may be saved by overseas grosses.

The studio currently has four of the top 15 films of the year, more than any other studio, and five films still to be released in 2012, including this Friday's "Bourne Legacy."

2013 looks promising as well, with new installments in the "Despicable Me" and "Fast & Furious" franchises leading the way.

Physics Students Rip Apart The Science Behind The Movie 'Armageddon'

$

armageddon

Bruce Willis and a nuclear bomb would not be able to protect the world from annihilation by a giant asteroid, according to a study which questions the scientific integrity of Michael Bay's 1998 blockbuster Armageddon.

In the film Willis, an oil drilling expert, is able to save the planet from imminent obliteration by flying around the moon, landing on the surface of the asteroid which threatens Earth and detonating a hydrogen bomb at its centre.

The heroic act, made possible by Willis's drilling expertise, splits the asteroid into two even halves which drift apart and fly relatively harmlessly past either side of the planet, saving humanity from extinction.

But now the effectiveness of the solution has been called into question by a group of physics students who claim mankind does not possess a bomb big enough to do the job.

A mathematical analysis of the situation found that for Willis's approach to be effective, he would need to be in possession of an H-bomb a billion times stronger than the Soviet Union's "Big Ivan", the biggest ever detonated on Earth.

Using estimates of the asteroid's size, density, speed and distance from Earth based on information in the film, the postgraduate students from Leicester University found that to split the asteroid in two with both pieces clearing Earth would require 800 trillion terajoules of energy.

In contrast the total energy output of "Big Ivan", which was tested by the Soviet Union in 1961, was only 418,000 terajoules.

DV.load("http://www.documentcloud.org/documents/407589-armageddon.js", { width: 460, height: 600, sidebar: false, container: "#DV-viewer-407589-armageddon" });

With such insufficient power, the only way for the Armageddon mission to work in reality would be to detonate the bomb at the outer edge of the Kuiper Belt, a region of the solar system beyond Neptune's orbit where Pluto is located.

The Kuiper Belt is filled with icy bodies and Pluto-like dwarf planets but has very few high-iron content asteroids like the one featured in Armageddon, making it highly unlikely that one would originate from so far away, they added.

Ben Hall, one of the authors of Could Bruce Willis Save the World?, published in the Special Physics Topics journal, said: "I really enjoyed the film Armageddon and up until recently never really considered the plausibility in the science behind the movie. But after watching it back I found myself being more sceptical about the film in many areas.

"Directors attempt to make films scientifically accurate, but find that a lot of trouble is run into in what can and cannot be done, thus leading to falsification in the science to make movies more interesting or visually appealing to the audience."

In a follow-up study the four students also calculated that the Hubble Space Telescope, the most powerful telescope available in the 1990s, would only realistically have been able to detect the asteroid at a distance of eight billion miles – almost the exact point at which it would need to be split.

Even in the unlikely event the asteroid was picked up in an image from the telescope, which has less than 0.02 per cent of the sky in its field of view, this would leave no time for Bruce Willis to reach it, the students said.

Ipartment, a hit Chinese sitcom now in its third season, deals with the lives of a mixed-sex group of friends in their late 20s who live in two neighboring apartments in Shanghai.

Does it sound familiar? Perhaps it should.

According to Tom Phillips of the Telegraph, the show has recently come under fire for scenes that are virtually identical to American sitcoms such as How I Met Your Mother, Friends and the Big Bang Theory. That allegations may hold weight — Chinese state newspaper Global Times reports the paper has already admitted stealing jokes from one Chinese comic.

So, are the rumors true? Gothamist points towards a translated clip of the show currently on YouTube.

Most people in Hollywood—arguably the most image-conscious place on the planet—have reportedly had some nips and tucks. Even icons like Marilyn Monroe reportedly had a little work done.

But some stars have taken going under the knife way to the extreme and the results aren't pretty.

These 17 celebrities paid up to $1 million dollars for puffy lips and stretched-out faces. We found some compilation videos on YouTube that showcase the worst of the worst.

There's one model who's so puffy from Botox you'll barely recognize her. Plus, a rock star who barely looks human.

Jeffrey Ross

Comedian and roaster Jeff Ross showed up to the taping of Comedy Central's Roseanne Barr roast dressed as the late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, with two young men wearing nothing but football helmets and towels by his side.

And that wasn't the most offensive thing he did.

During the roast, Ross turned to actor Seth Green and said, "Congratulations. This is actually a great night for you. You haven’t gotten this much attention since you shot all those people in Aurora," referring to his red hair similar to James Holmes

Ross continued, "I'm kidding. You are not like James Holmes. At least he did something in a movie theater that people remember!”

Hoping to avoid any controversy, a Comedy Central spokesperson announced that the joke will not appear in the broadcast next week.

The roast airs on Comedy Central August 12.
