As celebrities are making their final rounds on the "Late Show with David Letterman," Adam Sandler stopped by the show to send him off with one of his musical renditions: “There is no better man than David Letterman.”

It’s probably one of the greatest bits Sandler’s done in a while.

"He'll finally have time to take Jay Leno out for coffee and then secretly pee in his cup."

"Both Jimmys [Kimmel and Fallon] should get on their knees and blow ... you kisses."

“When you say goodbye and take your final drive, in your Ferrari full of stolen office supplies, and we watch you go with eyes full of tears, I hope the cops pull you over and drag you back here for 30 more years."

'CSI' canceled after 15 seasons, but it has big plans for the finale

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" has been canceled after 15 seasons, CBS said in a press release on Wednesday.

That's the bad news for fans of the long-running police drama.

The good news is that CBS is giving the show a two-hour television movie to wrap up its storylines. It will air on Sunday, September 27; all the original cast members are set to return, including William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger.

In further good news, "CSI" star Ted Danson will continue his role as D.B. Russell on the sophomore season of "CSI: Cyber," the franchise's only remaining series.

"CSI" had been on the cancelation watch, including Business Insider's list of shows heading to cancelation, after the series saw its ratings decline over the past season. It went from an average 11.9 million viewers for Season 14 to just 8.3 million for Season 15, according to Nielsen ratings.

Additionally, CBS cut Season 15's episode count from 22 episodes to 18 to make room for new series. It was the first time "CSI" had ever aired a shortened season.

Produced by CBS Television Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Television, “CSI” starred Danson, Elisabeth Shue, George Eads, Jorja Fox, Eric Szmanda, Robert David Hall, David Berman, Wallace Langham, Elisabeth Harnois and Jon Wellner.

This is what will save TV, according to Netflix

edelman patriots super bowl spike

The time people spend watching streaming services has increased over the last several years, and the time people spend watching live TV has decreased.

But live sports and awards shows are going to be the “saving grace” of TV, at least according to Netflix’s programming boss.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, said at a media conference in New York on Wednesday that so-called “linear television” — traditional cable and satellite programming that’s scheduled at a certain time — would become “even more linear.”

“It’s going to become more about events, and more about award shows and live sports — all of those things that really you can’t replicate,” Sarandos said Wednesday morning, according to a live webcast of the event, hosted by the media and telecommunications research firm MoffettNathanson. “Where the attribute really is the liveness of it, television is fantastic.”

“And I think the real saving grace for television is they’ll focus on the other things and make it more event oriented … But I think that’s the natural migration.”

Although traditional TV watching as a whole is down among Americans, live sports viewing remains a bright spot.

This year’s Super Bowl drew a record audience of 114.4 million viewers.

The Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao boxing match earlier this month broke pay-per-view viewership — and revenue — records, while the college football national championship game between Ohio State and Oregon in January was ESPN’s most-watched program ever.

Jake Gyllenhaal Ted Sarandos

Netflix’s Sarandos also said that the streaming service is “a great solution for consumers” when it comes to scripted programming that’s conducive to on-demand viewing, which he said Netflix will continue to focus on.

Americans still watch a lot of traditional TV — the average American spent a whopping five hours per day watching live and on-demand TV in the fourth quarter of last year, according to Nielsen. But that was a 4% decrease over the same period the previous year.

The amount of time Americans spent watching video online from services like Netflix and Hulu was up 39% over that time, to 35 minutes per day. The true number, however, is probably higher because Nielsen’s data doesn’t take into account watching video on a smartphone, through a streaming device like a Roku, or using a game console like an Xbox.

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is easily the best movie of the year so far

mad max fury road tom hardy

There’s a scene in "Mad Max: Fury Road" where you’re watching Tom Hardy’s titular character rise slowly out of the sand.

You hear every little speck of sand shaking loose from his body from his head downward. Every sound is intensified tenfold until Hardy’s character stands tall and comes to his senses.

That sort of attention to detail makes "Fury Road" incredible.

For those unfamiliar with "Mad Max," "Fury Road" is the fourth installment in the George Miller franchise which started in 1979 with Mel Gibson. Without too many spoilers, in the original, Max Rockatansky was a patrol officer in a dystopian Australia, before he lost everything of value to him. His further adventures involve putting others lives ahead of his own.

mad maxMax's origin story isn't imperative to the new film, though.

It took Miller over 15 years to bring “Fury Road” to the screen after delays and reshoots, and it was well worth the wait.

"Fury Road" may just be the best movie you’ll see all summer.

It’s definitely the best film so far this year.

While much of the two-hour extravaganza starring Hardy and Charlize Theron is a wild non-stop car chase, it’s so much more than that.

The entirety is a delicious assault on both your visual cortex and auditory system — a giant orchestral blend of machine engines roaring and wheels peeling combined with a booming overture of drums and guitar.

mad max drumThe lighting and visuals are a work of art to behold. As others have noted, you could watch this film in silence and just be blown away by the contrasting browns of the desert sands against the piercing blue skies and eyes of Theron and Hardy.

sandstorm mad max fury roadmad max fury road There’s a short leg of the film where everyone is cast in a soft blue gradient. It’s like watching the film under a filter, and it’s beautiful.

mad max fury roadStaying true to the character, Hardy’s Max doesn’t say much — often speaking in grunts or with simple gestures — but he doesn’t need to. The smallest movement of his eyes or gestures do the talking. Most of the time, he’s a terrifying badass who eats lizards raw and can take down a pack of men single-handedly without blinking an eye.

mad max tom hardyBoth he and Theron’s Imperator Furiosa (one of many lavish names in the film) are a ragged tag-team of warriors who you can’t get enough of on screen.

mad max charlize theron tom hardyAnd the guitar man. Oh the guitar man.

mad max fury roadYou know who I’m talking about if you’ve seen the trailers — the wild guitarist playing his own personal concert atop a spectacular Macy’s Day Parade-like vehicle. Every time he comes on screen, you can’t help but grin because it’s so utterly over the top that it’s just another welcome addition to the mixed bag of eccentric characters on display.

One thing that may surprise you given the film's testosterone-heavy marketing in trailers is that it’s driven by a female-centric storyline. Going in with little expectations having only watched the first “Mad Max,” I was ready for an all-out bro-movie filled with car chases, brawls, and mindless fun. While you certainly get all of that, you get a bit more, too, and it’s refreshingly welcome.

The film follows Furiosa (Theron) as she helps five “brides” (including Riley Keough, Zoe Kravitz, and the wonderful Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) escape a breeding circle responsible for birthing future members of the villain’s War Boy group. Max just happens to get tangled up in this whole charade. (A bit of wrong place wrong time.)

mad max While the movie clocks in at two hours, it feels like it goes on for longer, and it’s one of the rare times you won’t think that’s a bad thing.

Just when you think it may end, it kicks back up and revs into high gear. The entire final stretch of the film is on an entirely different level, which is sort of strange to say because the whole movie is on an entirely different level.

Imagine a gorgeously wild and hellish “Wacky Races” meets “Twisted Metal” (replace the scary clown face from the popular game with Max’s Immortan Joe). Numerous parties engage in combat — some hanging from wiry poles that would make Cirque du Soleil members jealous.twisted metal immortan joeFor the final 30 minutes or so, I surrendered myself to the film, dropping my pad and pen with which I usually jot down notes to claw nervously into my cheeks and the back of my neck, awaiting the uncertain fate of our film’s protagonists over a majestic desert car battle.

mad max fury road polemad max poleThat feeling of your heart beating in your chest, having no idea what’s coming next is what you head to the movies for, and the 70-year-old Miller more than delivers.

As far as any viewer will be concerned, this is a great cinematic triumph.

If you’re going to see a movie this weekend, or this summer, make it “Mad Max.”

"Mad Max: Fury Road" is in theaters Friday, May 15.

Nintendo is bringing its its classic gaming competition back from the dead (TYO)

Nintendo is trying to drum up hype before next month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, the world’s biggest showcase for all the big consumer games coming out in the next year.

So, in the lead-up to that event, the Japanese gaming company is bringing back the “Nintendo World Championships,” which hasn’t been a thing in 25 years.

Nintendo announced the news in a goofy video, where Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime plays a bunch of old Nintendo games to train for the two-week-long gaming tournament starting in late May.

nintendo world championships 2

If you have no idea what the Nintendo World Championships are, don’t worry. I had never heard of them until watching Nintendo’s video.

nintendo world championships 1

Only Nintendo diehards remember the 1990 Nintendo World Championships, the first and only time Nintendo held a cross-country competition to find the best Nintendo gamers in the US.

(Ignore the fact it's called "World" Championships, not "US" Championships.)

Nintendo toured various US cities and had local players test their skills by playing certain portions of major Nintendo games like “Super Mario Bros.” and “Tetris,” which were all crammed into a specially-made gaming cartridge for these events. The winners of the local contests were flown out to Hollywood to compete against players their own age to win incredible prizes, including a 40-inch TV and a Geo Metro convertible! Wowza!

1992_Geo_Metro_convertible_01Nintendo is pretty mum on details for this year’s World Championship — all we know is that qualifying rounds will begin May 30 at Best Buys in major US cities, and the winners from those events, as well as a few invited competitors (probably the winners from the 1990 World Championship, and maybe some surprise guests), will compete at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on June 14 to be crowned “Nintendo World Champion.”

That final championship event will be live streamed online.

Nintendo says it will offer more details about the Nintendo World Championships in the coming weeks, including which games will be played and the possible prizes.

The short-term goal of the event is to build hype for E3, which begins two days after the Nintendo World Championships end. On June 16, Nintendo will hold its “digital event," which will presumably include a ton of announcements about the Wii U and 3DS handheld. Nintendo did something a bit similar last year: It held a “Super Smash Bros.” invitational tournament before E3 began, and decided to forgo a formal press event in favor of one of these “digital events.”

Still, if popular, Nintendo might consider making its World Championships an annual event. Competitive gaming, also known as eSports, is becoming incredibly popular in the US, and this would be a great way for Nintendo to celebrate this particular demographic while showcasing some of its classic games. Personally, I can't wait to learn more about this tournament, and watch the June 14 tournament.

supergirl

The first trailer for CBS' anticipated "Supergirl" is here.

The series, starring Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, will premiere on the network Mondays this fall at 8 p.m. EST.

Here’s the synopsis via CBS:

Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet’s former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime.

The trailer makes a lot of references to Supergirl's famous cousin, the Man of Steel, but it's not clear whether the series will attempt to connect with Warner Bros.' DC cinematic universe at all.

A perfect snapshot of how just 12 actors play 126 characters on 'The Simpsons'

It's pretty safe to say that "The Simpsons," after hundreds of episodes and nearly three decades on the air, is the most successful cartoon show ever to hit television. It's also the longest-running.

Matt Groening, the show's creator, is at the center of it all. He has been executive producer for the show's entire run, along with James L. Brooks.

But even more visible are the actors who play these beloved characters. And it's not all about Homer, Bart, and Lisa. The Simpsons universe is incredibly vast.

And we just learned that one of the biggest actors of "The Simpsons," Harry Shearer, is leaving the show.

The folks at Dadaviz recently put together this awesome infographic that breaks down which voice actors play which characters on the show — and it may blow your mind a little bit.

This Western starring Michael Fassbender is hilarious, violent, and awesome

slow west gun fassbender"Slow West" is a modern Western clearly made by people that love and respect the genre, though it has more in common with a mismatched buddy comedy than a John Wayne film.

The premise is simple — a young Scottish boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) travels across late 19th-century West in pursuit of the woman he loves. The boy is incredibly naive and knows not of the unspeakable horrors that lie in the desolate countryside.

Lucky for him, he crosses paths with an outlaw drifter (Michael Fassbender) that offers to help guide and protect him along the way for a small fee. Little does he know the drifter may have a motive of his own.

Fassbender likely says more in voiceover narration than he does to the boy, and the difference in candor between these two mediums reveals there may be more to him than his brutish exterior would indicate. As more characters are introduced, Fassbender's value to the boy becomes clearer, and his charming demeanor becomes more sinister. The chemistry between the two is always lively and fun, and since the audience knows Fassbender is up to something, the tension only continues to rise until all hell breaks loose.

slow west shave fassbenderBesides the actual leads, the real star of the show here is the gorgeous, seemingly endless, wide-open spaces of the old West. The photography does a great job of isolating our heroes — as they go deeper and deeper into unchartered territory, they appear even more alone amongst the sweeping New Zealand backdrops, which themselves are a bit more confined by the director's decision to shoot 1.66:1.

Westerns are usually the perfect vehicle for a fuller, wider "scope" aspect ratio of 2.35:1, but the smaller, tighter frames work well here, restricting the view and keeping the audience in the same space as the characters. The string-filled score does a great job of accenting the action and feels like a solid mix of old-school and contemporary influences.

The most surprising thing about "Slow West" is how genuinely funny it is in spite of the fact that it's steeped in Shakespearean level tragedy. There are a number of hilarious gags weaved throughout, and even when things get incredibly dark, there's a big punchline a second later to ease the pain. It's not a comedy in the traditional sense, but rather a dark, sad and contemplative story made that much more effective through genuinely funny moments.

slow west horseBy the time "Slow West" reaches its frantic, mayhem-ridden, "Straw Dogs"-esque third act, it's firing on all cylinders, and is a total blast. It's masterfully paced, impeccably shot, occasionally violent, often funny, and always a joy to behold.

"Slow West" opens this weekend in limited theatrical release and on VOD services.

This weekend will be one of the most competitive at the box office in a long time

It’s going to be the “Pitches” against the “War Boys” at your local multiplex this weekend.

With the much-anticipated release of “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Pitch Perfect 2,” both opening on Thursday night, the projections for this weekend’s domestic box office take are the most competitive in months.

The rabid fans for Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and the other "Pitch Perfect" gals are planning to come out in force this weekend. Early domestic projections are predicting a $50 million three-day gross.

Meanwhile, the more than decade-long wait for "Fury Road," which stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, has predictions of a take around $40 million for the three days, according to Deadline

5706_D031_00199_0214R_COMP.JPGIt will be interesting how close these two very different films (going after different demographics) will be when the final take is tallied. Especially seeing that though box-office projections are leaning towards "Pitch Perfect 2" to be the winner, "Fury Road" has a higher Rotten Tomatoes rating at 99% than "Perfect 2," which is at 75%.

This weekend will be especially fun for box-office watchers, as this face-off is the first competitive weekend between two opening-weekend films since last year.

We have to go all the way back to the beginning of November 2014, when the kid-friendly "Big Hero 6" ($56.2 million) edged out Christopher Nolan’s space-opus "Interstellar" ($47.5 million) on their opening weekends.

Since then the top spot has been mostly flooded with big titles facing little competition and winning the top spot over multiple weeks such as, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1," "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," "American Sniper," "Furious 7," and "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

mad max fury road furiosaSpeaking of "Ultron," though "The Avengers" sequel is likely to slip to third place this weekend after holding the top spot the last two weeks, it is possible that it could still have a strong showing. Projections have the superhero blockbuster making close to $40 million

According to Fandango this week, "Pitch Perfect 2" was voted the most-anticipated comedy of the summer in a poll they conducted, and the presales for "Fury Road" are stronger than previously released R-rated action movies like "Lucy" and "Kingsman: The Secret Service."

This horror film breathes new life into haunted-house movies

we are still here

"We Are Still Here" is a legitimately scary, occasionally funny, and always smart homage to '70s/'80s horror. The dialogue and performances may feel a bit ham-fisted at times, but when things kick into high gear, the wonky exposition takes a backseat to some truly memorable and terrifying stuff.

After the tragic and untimely death of their son, a married couple move far away to a small New England town in an attempt to leave their melancholy behind. Anne (Barbara Crampton, '80s horror staple) immediately feels her son Bobby's presence in the new house, and while her husband, Paul, doesn't buy in to it at first, as evidence of the supernatural piles up, it's not long before he's a believer.

To help free her mind, Anne invites over their New Age, pot-smoking hippie friends Jacob and May (the parents of their late son's roommate) to reminisce and maybe even perform a séance. When May taps into the spirits of the house, it becomes clear that the forces at work here are more sinister than a friendly visit from Bobby.

The melodrama of the opening sequence may be a bit off-putting at first, but once all the wheels are set in motion, the film picks up the pace and dives right into the insanity. Genre legend Larry Fessenden turns in the film's best performance as Jacob, balancing big laughs with genuine terror, and Crampton also shines in a more muted, understated role.

The film succeeds by touting a seemingly predictable story and using it to subvert the audience's expectations. The characters think they know what's happening, but the reality of the situation goes far deeper than that, and first-time director Ted Geoghegan isn't afraid to sprinkle in his own mythology to spice things up.

WeAreStillHereLarryRather than follow the boring traditional route, the film veers left when you expect it to go right, constantly keeping you engaged and wondering what new danger will be revealed next. By the third act, things get bloody. Like, really bloody.

There are a few sequences so effective and scary that they remain firmly implanted in my mind even several days later. The CGI baddies are honestly never that intimidating, and the scares all come from well-paced, well-shot, and well-edited moments in which their reveal is scarier than the beings themselves. When one of the spirits gets loose and possesses the body of one of the characters, it's genuinely terrifying. There are a number of other unlikely surprises that I will not spoil here, and the paranormal stuff is only the tip of the dread iceberg.

"We Are Still Here" is one of those modern horror works that simply would not exist without the laundry list of genre films that inspired it. Instead of feeling reductive as a result, it brilliantly mashes up these retro conventions and sensibilities with more modern horror aesthetics to create something wholly satisfying. Horror fans will definitely want to cut out 80 minutes for this one.

"We Are Still Here" debuts in limited theatrical release (Cinema Village in NYC) and on VOD services June 5.

'Assassin's Creed’ finally drops its lame excuses and adds more female characters (UBI)

$

0

Blockbuster games rarely feature women as protagonists, and those that do often feature hyper-sexualized characters like Lara Croft. It's a sad truth of the video game industry: games that cost tens of millions of dollars court the 18-25 year old male demographic.

But the situation is thankfully getting better, and this year's "Assassin's Creed" embodies that positive evolution.

"Assassin's Creed: Syndicate"In "Assassin's Creed: Syndicate," a set of twins – sister and brother – share the lead role, as players must use both Evie and Jacob Frye to quest through a wonderfully complex recreation of 1880s London.

"We need more modern storytelling, to change the way we've been telling stories on 'Assassin's Creed,' if we really want to make this experience feel fresh," creative director Marc-Alexis Côté told Business Insider in an interview last week.

Côté's perspective stands in stark contrast to the statements made by previous "Assassin's Creed" creative directors. When asked about playable female characters in last year's "AC" game, creative director Alex Amancio said it was planned, but ultimately cut for budget reasons.

"It's double the animations, it's double the voices, all that stuff and double the visual assets," Amancio told Polygon. That claim turned out to be dubious at best, as animators publicly refuted Amancio's answer.

In 2012, the absence of playable female characters was blamed on historical accuracy. Here's "Assassin's Creed 3" creative director Alex Hutchinson in an interview with Kotaku:

"It's always up in the air. I think lots of people want it, [but] in this period it's been a bit of a pain. The history of the American Revolution is the history of men. There are a few people, like John Adams' wife, [Abigail]—they tried very hard in the TV series to not make it look like a bunch of dudes, but it really is a bunch of dudes. It felt like, if you had all these men in every scene and you're secretly, stealthily in crowds of dudes [as a female assassin], it starts to feel kind of wrong. People would stop believing it."

To be clear, "Assassin's Creed 3" is a game starring a half-Native American/half-British man who helps George Washington fight the American Revolution. There are some pretty serious liberties taken with its representation of history.

"Assassin's Creed 3"Notably, there was previously a game in the franchise called "Assassin's Creed: Liberation" that featured a female lead, but it was a spinoff released only on Sony's handheld game console, the PlayStation Vita, not the flagship entry that comes out every holiday season.

"Assassin's Creed: Syndicate" is a smart move in the direction of inclusivity.

In addition to a playable female lead, it features a diversity of male and female enemies (another first for the series); and female boss characters. Ubisoft has only briefly shown Evie in a gameplay video; what we were shown (briefly) in a demo last week didn't seem to depict her as a lesser character.

Here's how Côté described the difference in-game between Evie and Jacob:

Jacob is more oriented to combat: he's brash, he's a brawler, always jumps headfirst. I can't talk to you about Evie's personality, but I can say that she's more tactical. She'll explore the other side, the stealth side.

Ubisoft isn't saying much about its female protagonist just yet, but we were told by representatives that more information will be available later this summer.

This may have been the most embarrassing moment in the history of the world's strongest military alliance

NATO may be the strongest military alliance in the history of the world.

Among many accomplishments over the course of its 66-year history, the alliance protected Europe from Soviet expansion during the Cold War, intervened to stop ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, and provided air support for the rebels who overthrew Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

And now it's responsible for what may be one of the most frivolous moments in the history of recent geopolitics.

On May 14, during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Antalya, Turkey, a number of high-profile attendees somehow got roped into singing "We Are The World," the 1985 Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie-penned charity single written to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia.

"We Are The World" is one of pop music's most iconic, most infamous, and perhaps most-bitingly parodied works of unadulterated schlock.

At the time, it must have seemed like a stirring appeal to the world's conscience — the single sold over 4 million copies within a month of its release. Today, it's a relic of an outmoded and paternalistic way of thinking that assumes individual awareness and charity can't help but improve nebulous problems like "famine in Africa" — issues with political and social dimensions that emotional outsider-driven appeals like "We Are The World" glossed over almost by their very nature.

The spectacle of the representatives of the world's leading military powers singing a song that is both unbearable and about 30 years out-of-date renders satire pointless, as architect and noted satirist Karl Sharro pointed out on Twitter.

It also casts an uncomfortable eye on NATO itself, especially amid questions about the alliance's purpose in a post-Cold War world.

Some argue that NATO is more important than ever in light of Russian aggression in Ukraine and Georgia. Others believe that NATO's expansion, if not its continued existence, is actually a cause of Russian aggression.

Integration of vulnerable post-Communist states like Georgia and Ukraine into NATO is a hugely controversial matter. And the central premise of NATO— that an attack on one member should be treated as an attack on all of them — is under perhaps unprecedented strain, in light of Russian meddling in the NATO-member Baltic states and repeated attacks on the Turkish military originating from Syria.

The NATO foreign ministers probably shouldn't be singing a song that's universally associated with a time when the alliance had a much clearer sense of cohesion and purpose.

Why the director of 'Thought Crimes' thinks we should all be more careful about what we say online

Erin Carr Thought CrimesHBO's newest documentary "Thought Crimes" tells the story about how an addiction to dark fetish sites led Gilberto Valle to eventually be labeled by the media as the "Cannibal Cop."

His cannibalistic conversations with others were interpreted by some as fantasies and by others as an actual diabolical plot he was planning to carry out.

As a result, Valle lost his job with the NYPD and spent a year in prison

The documentary brings to light the important issue of monitoring what we say in the 21st century both in online forums and across social media platforms.

"Over the last couple years we've just seen people ... their whole reputations taken down because of something really silly or ignorant or terrible that they had posted," Erin Lee Carr, the director "Thought Crimes" told Business Insider.

Justine Sacco lost her job at IAC after a tasteless joke she made became a trending topic on Twitter. The aftermath of this ordeal was chronicled in a lengthy New York Times profile. More recently, Chad Shanks, the digital communications manager of the Houston Rockets, lost his job over a tweet that seemed to imply violence.

Carr herself explains she hasn't run into these kinds of troubles.

"I grew up kind of in an internet family," Carr said, "we were on the internet a lot and so I feel like I was coached from an early age about what's okay and what's not okay."

Still, she feels the need to be cautious whenever she goes online. Carr has over 10,000 tweets, and before any of them go public, she asks herself, "Could this come back at me in a certain way?"

"I think you really have to be careful about the line of self-censorship and being cautious and I think that is a line that I remain hesitantly cognizant of but need to keep thinking about." Carr said.

This reflects on the central debate of the Cannibal Cop case, in which it was nearly impossible to determine whether this was somebody letting out his inner-demons, or somebody who seriously wanted to commit a crime. The case has even been reopened, as a federal prosecutor has requested to reinstate the kidnapping conspiracy conviction against Valle.

Thought Crimes Gilberto Valle

Working on "Thought Crimes" has made Carr a bit more careful about what she shares, but that she won't stop tweeting anytime soon.

"I would say I'm more cautious now and I was very careful about the way I talked." Carr said. "I've spent the last year and a half looking at this really dark subject matter and that definitely affected me. But I don't know, I don't know if it changed me."

Valle's story isn't the last time Carr will examine how the internet affects us. She has a development deal with HBO and is currently "working on similar stories in the internet true crime space."

Mark Cuban shares the most important lesson he learned in his 20s

young mark cuban

Shortly after Mark Cuban got his bachelor's degree from Indiana University in 1981, he moved in with some friends in Dallas and became a bartender.

After getting sick of making drinks, Cuban worked at a PC software business, where he built up a strong clientele but provoked his boss to fire him for disobeying an order.

He was left with no savings and no means to pay his bills; it was as good a time as any to venture out on his own, he figured, and so he started a software distribution company called MicroSolutions.

He partnered with an experienced executive, and soon they had a nice thing going — until their receptionist embezzled and ran away with $83,000 of the company's $85,000.

As Cuban explains in his book "How to Win at the Sport of Business," he didn't give up or seek revenge. Instead, he buckled down and spent countless hours learning about the software he sold so that he would outperform the competition. He eventually sold MicroSolutions in 1990 to H&R Block for $6 million, personally making around $2 million. It was his first big deal.

He tells Business Insider that the greatest lesson he learned in his 20s was that "with time and effort I could learn any new technology that was released."

Rather than a boast, it's a message to entrepreneurs that when you hit dire straits, your competition isn't going to slow down for you to catch up, but you can accelerate past them with the knowledge you acquire. And Cuban doesn't suggest you spend the money or go in debt for an MBA.

"I remember going into customer meetings or talking to people in the industry and tossing out tidbits about software or hardware," he writes. "Features that worked, bugs in the software. All things I had read. I expected the ongoing response of: 'Oh yeah, I read that too in such-and-such.' That's not what happened. They hadn't read it then, and they still haven't started reading it."

Cuban says that despite a minimal background in computers, he was outperforming so-called experts in the field simply because he put time and effort in. It's why, he writes, he still allocates a chunk of his day to reading whatever he can to gain an edge in the businesses he's involved in.

"Most people won't put in the time to get a knowledge advantage," he writes.

Cuban explains that college is the time you pay to learn, but "now that you have graduated, it's your chance to get paid to learn. And what if you aren't a recent college grad? The same logic applies. It is time to get paid to learn."

Why you won't see Mel Gibson in the new 'Mad Max' movie

mad max

Before he starred in "Mad Max" in 1979, Mel Gibson was unknown to the rest of the world.

Then, "Mad Max" became a box-office smash. It grossed $100 million worldwide and held the Guiness world record for most profitable movie of all time for nearly two decades.

After that, Gibson was on his way to international stardom. He reprised his role as the titular Max Rockatansky two more times in sequels "The Road Warrior" (1981) and "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" (1985).

So for some fans of the series, it may have been a little bit of a surprise that he won't be making an appearance in the latest sequel "Mad Max: Fury Road."

The film itself took nearly 17 years to get made. Besides geographical and weather-related problems delaying production, director George Miller saw many reasons that made it difficult to get Gibson in his latest film.

Mad Max Mel Gibson"We were going to do it with Mel and we were within reach of doing it with Mel. Then 9/11 happened and the American dollar fell against the Australian dollar." Miller told The Huffington Post.

After the film was revisted years later, Miller started looking at others to play the lead as Gibson became older and his life was rocked by a series of scandals.

"By the time we got there, not only had Mel hit all the turbulence in his life, but this is not a ‘Mad Max’ in which he’s an old warrior,” Miller told the New York Post.

In 2006, he was arrested for drunk driving and heavily critcized for an anti-Semitic rant. In 2010, a profanity-laced voicemail further tarnished his reputation.

Miller also wanted to go for somebody younger, as this film, which is set in the future, isn't supposed to take place long after the original films.

mad max tom hardy“He’s meant to be that same contemporary warrior. I guess in the same way that James Bond had been played by various people, it was time to hand over the mantle.” Miller said.

Gibson's part is now being played by Tom Hardy.

However, there seem to be no hard feelings, as Gibson was present at the premiere with both Hardy and Miller.

Mad Max George Miller Tom Hardy Mel Gibson "Mad Max: Fury Road" opens nationwide on Friday, May 15.
