The Science Behind Who Gets Magical Powers

Harry Potter

Andrea Klenotiz, a University of Delaware biology student, has decoded the genetics of the wizarding gene in the Harry Potter universe. She sent a six-page paper of her work to J.K. Rowling.

The debate over wizarding genetics started with Rowling herself, who said the gene is dominant. Traditionally, and what most people were taught in high school, was that traits created by dominant genes always show up if a person has the gene.

This didn't jive with the HP world.

Because of that, many people were confused by Rowling's statement — if the gene is dominant, why are some people better at magic than others? Why are there squibs (non magic people born into wizarding lines) and mudbloods (wizards like Hermione born to non-magic parents)?

So, Klenotiz went to work. Her conclusion? "Magical ability could be explained by a single autosomal dominant gene if it is caused by an expansion of trinucleotide repeats with non-Mendelian ratios of inheritance."

Wanna know what that means?

1) A trinucleotide repeat: Genes are made up of DNA codes made out of nucleotides. Three of these nuceotides code for one amino acid, the building block of proteins, which make things happen in the body. So, a "trinucleotide repeat" is the repetition of three nucleotides (and therefore one amino acid) multiple times.

These kinds of repeats are present in normal genes, but sometimes the DNA copying machinery goes wacky like a skipping CD (if anyone from the Harry Potter Ages remembers using CDs) and there ends up being many more copies of this repeated code than normal.

This kind of mutation is responsible for diseases like Huntington's Disease, among others. Depending on the number of repeats that they have, a person could be normal, have a mild form of the disease, have the disease or have a severe form of the disease.

2) Non-Mendelian ratios: In school we are taught about Gregor Mendel and his pea plants. He was able to see predict the ratio of certain traits in the peas, for example their color (green or yellow) or the texture of their skin (smooth or wrinkly) based on the traits of their parent plants.

For example, if a plant had one copy of a gene linked to a dominant trait, like green color, it would be green, no matter what its other gene said.

If that plant mated with a plant without the trait, a yellow pea plant, half of its offspring would inherit that trait and only half of them would be green. If they both had one copy of the green trait, three quarters of their offspring would be green (only one would inherit the recessive "yellow" gene from both of them). If one or both parents had two copies of the green gene, all the offspring would be green.

Non-Mendelian genes are basically any genes that don't follow these rules. In the wizards, if the repeat is dominant, magical parents could expect three out of four of their kids to be magical. This isn't seen in wizarding pedigrees, though.

Klenotiz suggests that perhaps eggs with high levels of repeats are more likely to be fertilized, a phenomenon called transmission ratio distortion. Or that egg or sperm without the high levels of repeats are less likely to be created or survive the wizarding womb.

Now, for some wizarding. This explains several of the questions above. Here's how:

  1. Mudbloods: Wizards can be born from non-magical parents because these mutations can pop up out of nowhere. There's a better chance of you being magical if your parents are on the high side of the normal range.
  2. Squibs: Would be the offspring that are born to magical parents but don't inherit the dominant wizarding gene. In Mendelian genetics, 25 percent of offspring would be squibs. Those number aren't correct, but there is still the possibility that any given offspring of wizards would escape inheriting their repeats, and inherit the more normal number of repeats from their non-dominant genes.
  3. Varying degrees of magicalness, and the inheritance of strong magical powers: The more repeats any given wizard has, the more powerful he will be. The more repeats your parents have, the more you are likely to have. Therefore if you parents have strong magic, you likely will too.

One unclear problem: Why do squibs see magical things — like dementors and the Hogwarts castle — while muggles with similar numbers of repeats don't? Klenotiz suggests it could be an environmental factor, and suggests a study to figure it out:

Cross muggle-wizard adoption studies could provide evidence for this hypothesis.  If wizard-raised muggles have the same limited abilities or muggle-raised squibs fail to develop these abilities it would prove an environmental factor. If the adoption studies provide no evidence, we must remember that these studies would not account for environmental factors in the womb.  Unless there are any case studies of gestational surrogacy with a muggle child and a witch mother, the data would be inconclusive.

One question I have: What would a double-dose of the magical gene do? Any ideas? Would it be deadly?

See the entirety of the paper at Klenotiz's Tumblr.

She ends her letter with a plea to end the discrimination against mudbloods by those claiming to be pure-bloods:

Any classification of pure-blood, half-blood, or other mixes is illogical.  What are commonly known as muggle-borns would be better classified as a witch or wizard recently derived from muggles. Muggle-borns should simply be considered new wizarding lines just starting out.

The newest Mars rover, Curiosity, is scheduled to touch down on the Red Planet on Aug. 5

The rover's descent is a big ordeal, but when the unmanned vehicle finally hits the rocky surface, the first signal beamed back to Earth will be a song written by will.i.am.

The Black Eyed Pea's member recently told UK's Capital FM:

"I don't think I can talk about it, but there is a rocket going to Mars. It lands in August and when it lands it sends a signal back to show that it's there and they will beam a signal back to Earth and that signal will be the song."

Back in May, The Sun reported that the song will likely be a bonus track from his upcoming album #willpower

Houston Rapper Slim Thug Has Written A Personal Finance Book

Slim Thug

He might cavort with video vixens and rap about diamond-encrusted grills, but Houston rapper Slim Thug knows a thing or two about living within his means.

The self-proclaimed Black Suze Orman—who watches the guru religiously—penned a 47-page e-book (ahem, "financial manifesto") called "How to Survive the Recession" that's as cheeky and hilarious as hip hop fans would expect. As Thugga writes, "I always say if you can't buy it THREE times over, you can't afford it."

The book starts off with a list of "twenty-five financial rules to live by," including "never buy a house with unnecessary space" and "Never have a Bentley with a Benz salary." He also underscores the importance of crunching your budget and checking it twice: "Say you got a million dollar check; dudes they think they actually got a million dollars. You got to pay damn near half of it to taxes."

Slim Thug calls himself cheap, but told Rap Fix's Maurice Bobb the real reason he decided to write the book was that he was tired of income inequality and seeing black people make poor financial choices.

“We always at the bottom as black people," he said, "and it’s because of ‘what’s cool.’ Making it rain? That’s stupid. We always got something stupid money-wise that people think is cool. Pop a hundred bottles? For what? How many bottles it take to get drunk? I know where I came from and I know I can go back. But I ain’t going back.”

Jenna Jameson, the "world's most famous porn star," endorsed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney last night, according to CBS News San Francisco.

"I'm very looking forward to a Republican being back in office," Jameson told a CBS reporter in the VIP room of the San Francisco strip club Gold Club. "When you're rich, you want a Republican in office."

Via CBS:

The Mitt Romney endorsement appears to be a departure from previous political leanings displayed by Jameson. The 38-year-old entrepreneur has previously appeared in People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals campaigns, and was a Hillary Clinton supporter in 2008, according to published reports.

Jameson's net worth is estimated to be upwards of $20 million, making her one of the world's highest-paid adult entertainers.

Here’s Why A Bank Is Suing Nelly For $300K

Rapper Nelly and Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk owe the bank a lot of money.

Breman Bank and Trust filed a suit in St. Louis County Circuit Court Thursday against the pair along with St. Louis lawyer N. Scott Rosenblum and Carrie Campbell, to pay up for for defaulting on a $318,000 promissory note.

According to the suit, the group borrowed about $1.67 million from the bank and put two pieces of property in Clayton, Missouri up as collateral.  The bank is seeking the difference between the loan amount and what they made after selling the properties.

This isn’t the first time the group has gotten into legal trouble. In March, along with Colin Reily and NBA stars Darius Miles and Larry Hughes, they were sued by Truman Bank for millions after misrepresenting the value of a former Planet Hollywood location.

The Chinese Government Has Issued Six Bizarre New Rules For State Television

China Television

China's top broadcasting regulator has issued six new rules (or "suggestions") for television production, the state-run Beijing News reports.

They sound bizarre to western ears:

  • Remakes of foreign shows are banned.
  • Historical shows should cut down on jokes.
  • Historical shows should cut down on family drama.
  • Online games shouldn't be turned into TV shows.
  • Revolutionary history shows should show who is with China and who is with its "enemies".
  • Shows with a business theme should stress positive values.

The WSJ reports that the new rules, said to be issued by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, have not yet been confirmed by other sources, but adds that rules like this have been leaked to state news agencies and then officially announced in the past.

Marvel Just Hired This Black-Listed Writer To Pen 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'

Guardians-Of-The-GalaxyMarvel has hired an interesting choice to re-write Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy."

The studio has selected three-time Hollywood Black List member Chris McCoy to rewrite Nicole Perlman's initial treatment for the film.

“Galaxy” is the only new property in Marvel’s “Phase 2” of films (with the possibility of being joined by “Ant-Man”), to be capped by “The Avengers 2.”

While yet to receive a produced writing credit, McCoy is a three-time member of Hollywood’s Black List, reserved for the best scripts that haven't been adapted to the big screen.

He landed on the list for “Get Back” in 2007, “Good Looking” in 2009, and “Good Kids” in 2001.

McCoy’s comedic scripts all have “high-concept” aspects that hint “Galaxy” could be very different in tone then any Marvel movie before it. "Get Back" takes its lead characters time-traveling back to England 1966. “Good Looking” concerns a company that guarantees it can match clients with their soul mates. “Good Kids” is his most traditional script and centers on a group of high school overachievers who attempt to change their image after graduating.

His scripts have been praised for their "quirky comedic bent,” which sound like the right tone for a film with rocket-launching raccoons.

It’s an interesting choice for Marvel to go with such an inexperienced writer, but his unproduced scripts clearly show promise. The studio has certainly made bigger gambles than this, most notably hiring Robert Downey Jr. to star in the original “Iron Man.”

They also likely hired McCoy for relatively cheap, in line with their business model of keeping costs low, a good decision for a movie concerning an intergalactic man-tree.

How Did A Starbucks Sneak Past The Brand Police At The Olympics?

The most popular spot for NBC employees at the Olympics is the free Starbucks in the International Broadcast Center.

It's open all the time and staffers are frequently stating their gratitude.

But Paul Waugh at PoliticsHome asked a great question:

How did NBC get past the stringent branding laws at the Olympics?

Olympic branding enforcers have been notoriously strict this year.

BBC Radio presenter Jonathan Agnew's umbrella was confiscated because it wasn't designed by a sponsor. And the signature Pimms liqueur were banned at Wimbleton.

Starbucks isn't an official sponsor of the games, yet hundreds of journalists are walking around Olympic events (and cameras) with the green and white cups.

Other beverages available for free for NBC employees include Coca-Cola products, an inside source tells us, but the soda giant is an official sponsor of the games. McDonald's, with its McCafe, is an official sponsor of the games as well.

We've contacted the Olympics and NBC for an answer for how they pulled off this awesome feat for NBC employees.

The Surprising Real Names Of 25 Celebrities

$

whoopi goldberg

Plenty of Hollywood's biggest names don't go by their birth names–Demi Moore, Tina Fey, Mila Kunis, and Dakota Fanning

However, you probably don't know how the celebrities ended up with their current monikers.

Some are simple–Nicolas Cage, nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, changed his last name to make a name for himself without the worries of Hollywood nepotism.

Others, like Michael Caine and Martin Sheen are more inspired. And then there's Whoopi Goldberg, whose name was Caryn Johnson until friends noticed her flatulence problem.

Demi Moore — Demetria Gene Guynes

Moore kept the last name of her first husband Freddy Moore after they divorced in 1984.

Daughter Tallulah also legally changed her name to Lula. Father Bruce Willis first broke the news in 2007 on "The Late Show with David Letterman."

"She wanted me to mention here on the big show that she's legally changing her name from Talullah to Lula, just Lula," said Willis. "She doesn't like her name."

Reese Witherspoon — Laura Jeanne

The "Sweet Home Alabama" actress traded her first and middle name in for her mother's maiden name, "Reese."

Katy Perry — Kathryn (Katy) Hudson

Before she was a chart-topping singer, Perry was producing Christian music, under her birth name, Kathryn Hudson. She released gospel record Katy Hudson under the former label Red Hill Records before adopting her mother's maiden name to avoid confusion with this actress Kate Hudson.

CBS Blames Sliding Revenues On 'Frasier,' Amazon And Netflix (CBS, AMZN)

CBS may have reported an eight percent increase in second-quarter profit, beating out estimates compiled by Bloomberg, but that came coupled with a dip in advertising sales and licensing revenue from the company's old shows.

The No.1 network's sales sunk from $3.59 billion to $3.48 billion. Ad sales, 60 percent of the company's revenue, were mostly to blame, they dropped 3.3 percent.

Fees from CBS' vast library of old TV shows, including Frasier, also contributed to the revenue slip. Content and licensing revenues declined 8% to $816 million. The company said the decline was due to digital streaming and Frasier:

... the timing of licensing revenues from digital streaming, as dozens of programs from the Company's library were first made available for digital streaming during the second quarter of 2011, as well as the third-cycle domestic syndication sale of Frasier during the second quarter of 2011, partially offset by higher international syndication sales in 2012.

Frasier had strong sales in previous periods, leading to weak comparables.

"Digital streaming," however, appears to be a reference to a couple of deals that CBS struck with Netflix and Amazon. Members of Amazon can now watch CBS's old shows for free, the company announced in July. Moonves said the Netflix deal was "preordained" to be renewed.

Bonus points: If you noticed CEO Les Moonves on the conference call with Wall Street getting excited about a new Showtime title for next year, "Masters of Sex."

How One Filmmaker Recovered $13,238 Left In A New York City Taxi

"I write my name and number on just about any object that I might lose," says New York-based filmmaker Casey Neistat, "and I often add a line, a gentle appeal to the finder's conscience: 'Please do the right thing.'"

In a Times' Op-Doc video, Neistat recapped the madness that ensued when he left all his luggage, including video equipment worth more than $13,000, in the back of a New York City taxi.

Trying to locate the missing items sent Neistat down a bureaucratic rabbit hole that "would drive anyone mad," even though he did everything he was supposed to. He "called 311, submitted a lost property claim, called the police precincts," and even saved the driver's receipt and medallion number. Still none of it mattered if the driver didn't return his belongings.

Meet The All-Girl Punk Band Putin Wants Kept In Prison

$

0

pussy-riot

Just days before Putin's third re-election, a group of political activists called Pussy Riot performed a "punk prayer" titled "Mother of God, Banish Putin," in Russia's holiest site – the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.

Filmed by a fellow activist, the YouTube video of their defiant performance quickly amassed millions of hits and became the ultimate national "symbol of the opposition movement."

On March 5, the day after Vladimir Putin was re-elected as President, two of the members were arrested. Very soon after, the third member joined them in jail. Now six months after committing their "crime," these three women are being tried for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred." They face up to seven years of jail time if found guilty.

Now, the jailed women have become synonymous with the anti-Putinist regime, gaining both domestic and international recognition for their "radical" religious ideology in which the Church is separate from the State (as dictated by the Russian Constitution). Among their supporters are internationally renown musicians, authors, and organizations, including Madonna, Amnesty International, and British writer, Stephen Fry.

Who are the girls behind Putin's punk prayer?

PUSSY RIOT:

After serving two terms as President, Putin stepped down in 2008, conceding the Presidency to his political ally (and puppet, many argue), Dmitri Medvedev as there is a Russian law forbidding a President to hold more than two consecutive terms. For the following term, Putin then assumed the role of Prime Minister, as Medvedev became the head of state. Then, in September of 2012, Putin announced he would be running for a third term as President.

It was following Putin's "brutal" announcement that Pussy Riot was formed. Their inspiration for starting this group was that, "[Pussy Riot] realized that this country needs a militant, punk-feminist, street band that will rip through Moscow's streets and squares, mobilize public energy against the evil crooks of the Putinist junta and enrich the Russian cultural and political opposition."

THE BAND MEMBERS

Maria Alyokhina is 24 years old and is a student at the Institute of Journalism and Creative Writing in Moscow. She is also a member of Green Peace and supports the conservation of the largest lake in the world–Lake Baikal.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, despite being the youngest of the trio at 23-years old, is the informal leader of the group. She is a graduate of the University of Moscow where she studied philosophy. She is currently a member of "War," a dissident art group.

Yekaterina Samutsevich is 29 years old and studied at the Moscow Institute of Power and Engineering. According to The Independent, she once worked in a laboratory where she developed submarine and missile software.

None of the three women have a criminal record or history of violence.

THE TRIAL:

The closed-door trial of Pussy Riot members Alyokhina, Tolokonnikova, and Samutsevich began this week in the bulletproof Gadanski Court in Moscow. The trio are facing charges of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred." No bail has been posted as they are considered "too dangerous" to be released. If they are found guilty, they face up to seven years of imprisonment and at least a minimum of two years.

They have been incarcerated for the past six months and have been denied access to family visits.

The presiding judge over the case is Marina Syrova and the lead prosecutor, Alexander Nikiforov. Two witnesses took to the stand on Wednesday, neither of whom actually witnessed the alleged crime on February 21, but described their immense "spiritual suffering." The first, Oleg Ugrik, is a strong Orthodox believer who, after watching their video online, condemned the trio for their desecration of the religious space. The second, Eteri Ivanishvili, is a bursar in an entirely different Church from the one in which the act occurred.

pussy-riotAll three defendants pleaded not guilty on Monday, claiming that their actions were merely political (and not an act of terrorism, as many are keen to believe) as they protested the Orthodox Church's public support for Putin.

NATIONAL RESPONSE:

Nikiforov, has stated that "this trial has practically split society into two parts." A survey released by the independent polling agency, the Levada Center, mirrors that statement, saying "a third of Russians polled saw the sentence of two to seven years as 'adequate,' 43 percent said it was excessive, and 15 percent are against any punishment at all." That leaves very little room for individuals who feel indifferent towards this case.

There is currently an online petition with 43,478 signatures from Pussy Riot supporters calling for their immediate release. Many liken Pussy Riot's imprisonment to witch hunts in the Middle Ages.

In comparison, the extreme radically-minded supporters of the Orthodox Church are demanding harsher punishment by the Kremlin in order to combat the these rising "anti-clerical forces."

Meanwhile Nikolai Polozov, the attorney for Pussy Riot, has become an overnight sensation and national hero in Russia.

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE:

Madonna, Peter Gabriel, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea, Franz Ferdinand, Beastie Boys, and Sting are all famous musician supporters of these feminist punk rockers. Anthony Kiedes (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers) recently wore a Pussy Riot T-shirt at his Moscow concert and Madonna told Russian television she was "sorry" to hear about Pussy Riot's arrest.

Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand Tweeted: "I'm sure you are all fans of their right to express their opinion. Any world leader who claims to be a fan of the Beatles and John Lennon ... then imprisons contemporary musicians who express their political views, is the worst kind of hypocrite: a dangerous one."

Meanwhile Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz held a benefit concert in Brooklyn two months ago for the imprisoned band members. Heliotropes, Shady Hawkins, and TinVulva also performed live sets at the concert.

The Washington Post, writer Stephen Fry, and Amnesty International are also among the supporters.

THE ORTHODOX CHURCH'S RESPONSE:

Despite the Russian Constitution stating that the Church must be separate from the state, the Russian Orthodox Church has long been a supporter of Putin and have instructed their followers to "rely on the state and to be grateful for its care." For Putin, religion and the Orthodox Church has been a frequent viable source of legitimization throughout his quest for political power. These two factions of power go hand-in-hand, so much so that "religious and bureaucratic tongues have become blurred." As an additional note, Putin has also committed $120 million to the rebuilding of Orthodox churches.

pussy-riotThe trial of Pussy Riot has become a prime opportunity for the Orthodox Church to condemn any opposition of the Church and by extension, Putin himself. Meanwhile, Putin has used this as an opportunity to reaffirm his own political power by way of siding with the anti-Western Russian Orthodox Church.

Ugrik, a passionate believer in the Orthodox Church, declared that "black energy swept over" him following Pussy Riot's desecration of his Church and that Pussy Riot had "lowered themselves into hell of their own volition."

Vsevolod Chaplin, a high-ranking spokesperson for the Church, gave this statement: "It was a sin against God and it is God that is judging it, and all Christians should know this." Following the public apology from Pussy Riot, Chaplin responded, "their words had a double meaning. Any acceptance of a mistake is a step in the right direction. But they also insulted the patriarch, who is a symbol of the church."

PUTIN'S RESPONSE:

While in London yesterday (after speaking with Prime Minister David Cameron and watching Olympic judo), Putin told the press that people "should not judge [Pussy Riot] too harshly" and hopes that "the court would will come out with the right decision, a well-founded one."

vladimir-putinPutin also noted that these women should feel lucky their prosecution is occurring in Russia rather than Israel or Russia's Muslim Caucasus. "I think if the girls had desecrated something in, let's say, Israel—there are some pretty strong guys there, you know—it wouldn't be too easy for them to get out of there," Înterfax reported.

"Or if they went to the Caucasus and desecrated some sacred Muslim place, we would not even have time to protect them," Putin added.

Sometimes, however, actions do speak louder than words. A day after he was inaugurated as President, Putin passed strict new laws banning protests on the streets. Special forces have also raided the homes of prominent and outspoken anti-Putin activists, including blogger Alexei Navalny, who now faces a potential ten years in prison. And top officials in the Kremlin, who are stauch Putin supporters, have proposed internet censorship similar to the Chinese.

Putin is Russia's court. He will decide the verdict in the end," Pyotr Verzilov, Tolokonnikova's husband said. "He is feeling enormous pressure both at home as well as abroad and, obviously, under such circumstances he no longer wants to be a bloody dictator."

In this week’s trailers, Brad Pitt plays a hitman with a chowder-thick Boston accent and Katherine Heigl returns for her semi-annual romantic comedy.

We get better looks at Liam Neeson and Daniel Craig returning in their new action-packed sequels where the two single-handedly take out armies of baddies.

Plus, Nicole Kidman slums it down for another shot at Oscar gold, and the “Paranormal Activity” franchise tries out Skyping, with terrifying results.

Bachelorette – August 10 On Demand, September 7 In Theaters (Red Band)

Kirsten Dunst's return to film in "Bachelorette" will  on demand a month before it debuts with a limited theatrical run. Riding the coattails of “Bridesmaids” may have been enough to ensure this has an opening weekend over $20 million. Knowing that, even with a solid red band trailer out this week, we wonder if we’ve already seen the best of this movie.

At the very least, there’s an awesome “Party Down” reunion with Adam Scott and Lizzy Caplan.

The Words - September 7

Bradley Cooper gets rich plagiarizing a novel, sleeps with Zoe Saldana, and the audience is asked to feel bad for him when it all comes crashing down.

The House At The End Of The Street - September 21

The newest trailer gives away the entire plot of this Jennifer Lawrence thriller (care to guess where the “missing” daughter is?), but still looks slightly better than the average horror film. However, the film's being promoted with the use of the hashtag #HATES, the acryonym for the film. For the most part, the hashtag is working for them. Hopefully, the film turns out well or the hashtag element may work against them.

For those looking to get their Lawrence fix but can’t wait until November for David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook,” this movie’s for you.

Katniss Hunger Games

Ryan Lochte, Gabby Douglas… Katniss Everdeen?

“Hunger Games” fever spilled over into the Olympics when archery was announced the #1 cable ratings winner with an average of 1.5 million daytime viewers.

In the novels and movie, title character Katniss trains herself to be a skilled archer, using her talents to provide for her family and survive in the Hunger Games arena.

NBC Sports Chairman Mark Lazarus credits “Hunger Games” with attracting interest in younger demographics.

No surprise, considering both the popularity of the series and the increase in archery sales since the release of the film.

However, some strategically placed tweets during the games surely helped as well.

The archer who trained Jennifer LawrenceKhatuna Lorig, competed for the United States, and NBC Sports Network capitalized on the connection.

NBCSports directly promoted Olympic archery using the #HungerGames hashtag and referencing title character, Katniss in its tweets.

Lorig eventually lost the gold to South Korea's Ki Bo Bae

blue meth

A man who's been to prison twice for manufacturing meth took to an online forum to tell his secrets of the trade.

The man posted to Reddit's Ask Me Anything section with his prison numbers as proof of his background. He says he is now cleaning up his act, getting custody of his daughter and going to college.

Below are some highlights from the interview.

How does a meth cook make sure his or her stuff is high-quality?

"Eventually I started using pH strips. But originally I would shoot it and if I died don't use it. Some people have a "quality control" but it's few and far between. Yes I actually shot some shit that looked like garbage a friend made. It was an awful high and for the next few days I felt like my back was hit by a truck."

On whether he blew anything up:

"No, I do have a couple friends with between 20-50 percent burn scars."'

Thoughts on how much being a real-life meth cook is like Breaking Bad:

"I think it's accurate. You become a shell of who you were and you do really f----- up shit. Other than that I don't know, I wasn't a superlab."

What made him decide to quit drugs:

"It stopped being enjoyable in the late 90's. It took till 2008 to get off it. I was sick of being a disappointment to my family."

How he feels about legalizing drugs:

"I think legalizing it would be a big mistake. Pot, mushrooms, and opiates I'd be fine with. Speed is a different animal. As long as the opiates were pharmaceutical grade."

And how much he made as a meth dealer:

"Probably $2,000 to $3,000 per week."
