Kim Kardashian hit the Met Ball red carpet Monday night in Peter Dundas's first gown he designed at his new post at Roberto Cavalli.

Kim Kardashian Kanye West met ballBut people at home were quick to notice that the gown looked vaguely familiar.

In 2012, Beyoncé wore a very similar Givenchy dress to the Met Ball.

Beyonce met gala 2012The resemblance was not lost on the folks of Twitter:

Kim's dress also had a slight resemblance to another of Beyoncé's past gowns:

But Kim took to Instagram to clear up any feelings that she was a copy cat, assuring that it was, in fact, singer Cher who inspired her Met Ball look.

"Tonight's inspiration! Cher at the 1st ever Met Gala! I just met her and told her this photo was my inspiration for my dress tonight! She is so beautiful! So happy I met her!"

 on

"This beauty, this icon! I'm so so happy I met her!!!! We spoke about our amazing Armenian journeys! And that Bob Mackie gown she wore to the Met 1974."

 on

"Met Gala with @theMarcJacobs and Cher!!!!"

 on

Despite any negative attention surrounding her dress, Kim seemed pretty pleased with her look.

"Thank you so much to everyone who made this look happen last night! Of course @peter_dundas & @robertocavalli for making me your 1st gown! What an honor! & @lorraineschwartz for jewelry. Glam squad- Peter Savic for hair & @makeupbymario. Kanye wore Cavalli as well!"

Like Kardashian, Beyoncé also went with a barely-there sheer dress this year.

A dark cloud is hanging over the Oscar-winning Snowden documentary

Snowden

A critical flaw in the Oscar-winning documentary featuring Edward Snowden has been further exposed by one of the film's central characters.

"Citizenfour" includes extensive footage of filmmaker Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald meeting with the former NSA contractor in Hong Kong.

The film sets the stage for Snowden's collaboration with Poitras by telling the story of NSA whistleblower William Binney, a 32-year veteran of the US intelligence community and one of the most respected code breakers in NSA history.

Binney tells Poitras how he built a program called "Stellarwind" that served as a pervasive domestic spying apparatus after the September 11, 2001, attacks. The mathematician is shown praising Snowden's actions throughout "Citizenfour."

But the film lacks crucial context— specifically that Binney doesn't agree with all of Snowden actions.

"Among the leaked documents are details of foreign-intelligence gathering that do not fall under the heading of unlawful threats to American democracy — what Snowden described as his only concern," George Packer of The New Yorker, who spent time with Poitras and company in Germany, wrote in his detailed review of the film. "Binney, generally a fervent Snowden supporter, told USA Today that Snowden's references to 'hacking into China' went too far: 'So he is transitioning from whistleblower to a traitor.'"

BinneyBinney recently discussed his "traitor" comments with Business Insider.

He reiterated that he believed Snowden did not act in the public's interest when he revealed "operational details of specific attacks on computers, including internet protocol (IP) addresses, dates of attacks, and whether a computer was still being monitored remotely" to Lana Lam of the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

"As I have said in the past, revealing specific targets or successes of US intelligence activities is not in the public interest," Binney told Business Insider over email after discussing the topic at a private luncheon.

He then confirmed that he stood by what he said to USA Today after the SCMP leaks: "You have fairly quoted me on USA Today."

Greenwald, for his part, agrees with Binney. He told the Daily Beast in June 2013 that he would not have "disclosed the specific IP addresses in China and Hong Kong the NSA is hacking."

The comments by Binney are an issue for "Citizenfour" and its supporters, with an NSA legend turned whistleblower asserting that Snowden crossed a line when he began leaking information on NSA activities.

One of Snowden's legal advisers weighed in on Business Insider's interview, apparently without realizing that Binney confirmed that he was quoted accurately.

Snowden allegedly stole up to 1.77 million NSA documents while working at two consecutive jobs for US government contractors in Hawaii from March 2012 to May 2013.

The 31-year-old gave an estimated 200,000 documents to Poitras and Greenwald in early June 2013.

The whereabouts of the rest of the documents, besides the ones he showed to SCMP, are unknown.

Apple has an opportunity to completely change TV if it uses this model (AAPL)

Tim Cook Apple TV

Apple is getting ready to introduce a new television experience. Multiple sources, including The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, say Apple will soon introduce a new streaming service that offers about 25 channels from the likes of ABC and Fox for $30 to $40 a month.

It might debut at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which starts June 8.

We’re still not sure what Apple’s streaming service will look or feel like, but it would be wise to take a cue from Netflix, one of the most popular streaming services out there.

Netflix doesn’t always have the best or most popular movies, but people love Netflix because they can watch as much as they want without repeatedly taking out their wallets.

And that’s the key.

Apple doesn’t have Netflix, but it has its own secret weapon: iTunes.

Tons of people already use iTunes — it’s the most popular media player in the world for storing music, movies, and TV shows — and it also houses the biggest multimedia vendor in the world in the iTunes Store.

The iTunes Store has almost every new movie and TV show you could think of, but there’s one major problem: Its pricing structure is downright medieval.

Most new movies from the iTunes Store still cost around $5 to rent or $20 to own. And when you rent a movie, you only have 24 hours to finish it once you’ve started playing it.

Compare that to Netflix, which lets you watch as many movies as you want, as many times as you want, at a much more reasonable price of $8 a month. It’s easy to see why Netflix is a clear winner in the streaming age.

Netflix gets its content by paying companies a set amount of money to license movies and TV shows for a certain period of time. The iTunes Store licensing structure is centered around pay-per-view: People buy or rent your content, and you get a percentage of that pie.

But let's assume Apple can do everything Netflix can, and then some, since it has much deeper pockets. Apple could persuade content makers and distributors to be paid a flat fee — probably higher than what Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu Plus offers — to offer their movies and TV shows for a set period of time on their new streaming service. All that, plus live TV, could be a game changer.

itunes movie store

What would iTunes look like with a Netflix model?

Imagine this: For $15 to $20 a month, you get total access to the iTunes Store — on any device, be it an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV. You can stream all the new movies and TV shows right after they air, and you can watch them as many times as you want. No more rental rules and restrictions.

The added incentive for the new Apple TV would be the ability to get live TV for an extra $30 to $40, where the same rules would apply: You can watch new or old episodes from certain channels at any time you want, including sporting events, as many times as you want, ideally with no commercial interruptions.

The iTunes Store proved an excellent deterrent to online piracy when it debuted back in 2003, but in the age of Spotify and Netflix, it's all about being able to endlessly binge on streaming content at a fair, set price. So it's time for iTunes to become less of a "Store" and more of a "Service."

If the new Apple TV had these subscription offerings — plus a slick new remote, which The New York Times reports is in the works — I know I’d buy one.

Everyone loves a good blooper, but this scene from Tuesday's "The Price is Right" may just take the cake.

CNBC reports that on an episode that aired Tuesday, a woman named Danielle was called down to play. She won two prizes — great job, Danielle! — but while the first prize, a sauna, seemed like an awesome freebie, the second didn't make too much sense for Danielle, who uses a wheelchair.

It was a treadmill.

Here's how the scene unfolded:

 on

Folks on Twitter were left a little dumbfounded by the whole thing:

And CNBC's Eli Langer reports "viewer Chrissie Johnson asked whether this was a 'producer fail, insensitive or nah?'" on Twitter.

If Danielle was unimpressed with her prizes, she didn't show it.

"I'm just so excited right now!" she exclaimed to host Drew Carey.

Here’s how one of the most memorable scenes from HBO's Kurt Cobain documentary was made

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck” has a treasure trove of never-before-seen materials that looks back on the childhood and private life of the legendary lead singer of Nirvana, who tragically took his own life in April of 1994 at the age of 27.

But there’s one particular piece in the documentary, directed by Brett Morgen (“The Kid Stays in the Picture”) that no one, not even Cobain’s family or closest friends, ever knew existed.

Morgen had been working on the project for five years when he finally got the call. In 2013, he was granted access to a storage space where Cobain’s most intimate materials — journals he wrote and paintings he created — are kept.

“One of the things that would change the direction of the film was a box that I found that said, ‘cassettes,’” Morgen told Business Insider.

montage of heck finalSurprised to find the box, as no one told him any audio was stored there, Morgen tracked down a few cassette decks and began transferring them into digital files.

Hidden among the hours of recordings of Cobain playing music and joking around, he came across a story Cobain taped in 1988.

“I knew instantly it was different because he was performing it and was doing multiple takes on it,” Morgen explained. “It was a little more narrative than most of Kurt’s art.”

The story Cobain tells in the recording is of his first sexual encounter, which then leads to the first time he contemplated suicide.

Morgen brought the recording to the Cobain family, who had never heard it. He even brought it to the attention of Cobain’s biographer, Charles R. Cross, who wasn't aware of its existence, either.

Morgen knew it needed to be in the film, but how could he make it work visually for the movie?

Morgen is famously known for using animation in his work. In "The Kid Stays in the Picture," he used effects to bring still photography to life in his story of Hollywood mogul Robert Evans.

robert evans

And the 2007 film, "Chicago 10"  a look at the anti-war protestors put on trial following the 1968 Democratic National Convention  is entirely animated.

But Morgen admits he initially had no intention of animating the Cobain audio.

“We were going to animate his art and his journals (made for the film by artist Stefan Nadelman), but there was never a discussion about animating Kurt,” he said.

But then he came across the work of Dutch artist/filmmaker Hisko Hulsing and his animated film, "Junkyard.

“I felt that he had a similar dystopian view of the world that Kurt had, but a much better craftsman than Kurt,” said Morgen of Hulsing. “But the view and the tone had a lot of similarities, a lot of darkness and twisted reality.”

Junkyard finalMorgen asked Hulsing to join the project to animate the Cobain audio story. Hulsing also animated another audio sequence later on in the film in which Cobain is recording the mundane moments of his life while living at his girlfriend’s house in the ‘80s.

“I’ve never been a Nirvana fan,” Hulsing admits. “I think I was 21 when ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ became a hit and I just had a dark, psychotic adolescence, so it didn’t strike a right cord for me.”

But Hulsing said he agreed to come on because he was fascinated by Morgen’s mission to celebrate Cobain’s life, not mythologize his death.

kurtcobain06 Wendy O'Connor HBOMorgen played Hulsing an edited version of the audio that was more polished and streamlined than the original recording he discovered in the cardboard box. Morgen also came up with a shot list for Hulsing to follow while making the animation, and the two went back and forth for months on storyboards.

From his small studio in Amsterdam, Hulsing compiled a team of 27 people (18 of them animators) and for four months they worked on not only the Cobain audio story, but the other portion of the film Hulsing was responsible for. For the 85 shots that were Hulsing's responsibility, they produced 6,000 animations and 60 oil paintings on canvas. Some of those canvas paintings were as large as six feet.

Hulsing would then take a digital picture of the canvas, input the animation that would go in front of it, and send to Morgen back in L.A. for approval.

Here's an animated rendition of Cobain as a teenager.

cobain bedBelow is an excerpt from Cobain’s audio story in "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck," accompanied by select GIFs of Hulsing’s animation from the sequence in the film.

cobain friendsTrevor was a guy I hated but resorted to becoming friends with because he was the only person I could get pot from. He was the kingpin. Trevor, Ace, John, Darin, all white trash low life scum of the earth, according to the jocks. They had been going to this girl's house after school and they invited me. We got to the door and a very fat girl let us in.

cobain funny girlIt wasn't obvious to me for over an hour that this girl seemed kind of quiet until one of the guys pointed out that she was in a Special Ed class. I'm sure a lot of kids would call her a retard and some just slow, and at the time, and still to this day, I would call her quiet and illiterate. But not retarded.

cobain stairsThe object of the guys who'd been going there for the past month was to steal booze from the downstairs basement of her house. While others distracted her, one would go down and take a fifth and then exit the downstairs. We did this routine every other day and got away with it for, oh, about a month.

And during that month happened to be the epitome of my mental abuse from my mother. It turned out that pot didn't help me escape my troubles too well anymore, and I was actually enjoying doing rebellious things like stealing booze and busting store windows.

cobain stealBut nothing ever mattered. I decided within the next month I would not sit on my roof and think about jumping but I'll actually kill myself. And I wasn't going out of this world without actually knowing what it was like to get laid.

cobain contemplateSo one day after school I went to the girl's house alone and invited myself in and she offered me some Twinkies and I sat on her lap and I said, "Let's f---."

cobain girlAnd I touched her and she went into her bedroom and got undressed in front of me and I watched and actually realized it was actually happening. So I tried to f--- her but didn't know how, so I asked her if she'd done this before and she said, a lot of times, mainly with her cousin.

I got grossed out very heavily with her smell and her sweat reeked, so I left. My conscious grew to where I couldn't go to school for a week and when I did I got in-house suspension for skipping.

cobain classAnd that day the girl's father came in screaming and accusing someone of taking advantage of his daughter. And so during lunch rumors started and by the next day everyone was waiting for me to yell and cuss and spit at me, calling me "the retard f----r."

cobain bottleI couldn't handle the ridicule. So I got high and drunk, I walked down to the train tracks and laid down and put two big pieces of cement on my chest and legs and waited for the eleven o'clock train.

cobain trainAnd the train came closer, and closer, and closer and went on the next track besides me. And it stood over me over.

cobain tracksDetention from school had an effect on me, and the train scared me enough to try to rehabilitate myself by lifting weights and mathematics seemed to be improving so I became less manically depressed. I still didn't have any friends because I hated everyone for they were so phony.

Hulsing said the bleak look he gave the animation came from what he observed looking at photos of Aberdeen, Washington, where Cobain grew up.

"Images and videos of Aberdeen clearly show that it's often grey and rainy," Hulsing said. "I believe that the somber palette adds a lot of darkness and hopelessness to the story of young, suicidal Kurt."

cobain aberdeenHulsing also said that Cobain’s blank facial features in the story came from how he and Morgen believed Kurt felt in his social setting. "He's hanging out with a group he's not a real part of," he said. "Kurt's own voiceover already explains his own state of mind as a teenager, the way he felt rejected and ridiculed, I didn't want to overdo that."

cobain blinkThere were also some visuals that don’t match what Cobain says, particularly the line when he goes to the railroad tracks to commit suicide: “Put two big pieces of cement on my chest and legs and waited for the eleven o'clock train." According to Morgen, that was intentional. "I decided to take that one moment and deviate from Kurt's narrative just a bit to kind of embrace the subjectivity of the sequencing and acknowledging that we are interpreting these events," he said.

The music played over the telling of the story is a string arrangement of the Nirvana hit, “Smells Like Teen Spirit," arranged by composer Jeff Danna. "There was already some existing music of strings playing 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,'" Hulsing said. "So [Morgen] put that under my moving storyboards in the beginning and it really worked for Brett, so later he had a new composition done."

kurtcobain10_TheEndOfMusicLLC_HBOLooking back on making the film, Morgen said Hulsing’s work was always the wild card.

"Once we saw the final assembly edit, Joe Beshenkovsky, who edited the film with me, both of us felt we were pretty comfortable where we landed," said Morgen. "But at the same time we knew Hisko was just getting started [on animating]. There was this fear, 'Hisko is going to be our Achilles heel if he doesn't deliver.' It's not like we could cut out the sequence. I've had some treacherous experiences with animation not really working out the way you'd hoped."

But when Hulsing delivered the first drawings, all the anxiety rushed away.

“He gave me a gift," Morgen said. "He was really committed to the work. He really wanted to get it right and I really appreciate that about him."

Hulsing said with a chuckle about the experience, "I'm still recovering."

Hisko Hulsing Jaroslav ReptaWhat’s fascinating to learn about Cobain’s audio story is that it may not be true.

“I met Krist Novoselic, the bass player for Nirvana, at Sundance and he said that he knew Kurt very well from a young age and he never heard that story before," said Hulsing.

Morgen and Cobain’s wife, Courtney Love, also questioned the story’s veracity at a Q&A following the film’s screening at the Tribeca Film Festival last month.

But, Morgen told BI, whether it’s real or not doesn’t interest him.

“I’m not a writer or a historian,” he said. “I’m making a movie and it’s a depiction of his art, so I’m out for an emotional truth.”

Joss Whedon quits Twitter after receiving death threats related to ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’

avengers age of ultron joss whedon scarlett johansson

Following a $191 million opening weekend for his "Avengers: Age of Ultron," director Joss Whedon, an outspoken personality, decided to quit Twitter Monday morning.

Some are speculating that it had to do with a high volume of death threats and hate from commenters, though Whedon did not confirm why he chose to flee the social media platform.

ScreenCrush was able to capture his final message to fans before he deleted his account:

Joss Whedon Quits Twitter

While Whedon gave no official reason for why he deactivated his account, some suspect it has to do with the amount of violent threats Whedon received over the film.

The backlash toward Whedon appeared to stem from infuriation at the portrayal of Black Widow, the main female character played by Scarlett Johansson in "Age of Ultron." In the film, a big chunk of her storyline revolves around a budding relationship with Bruce Banner/The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).

hulk black widow avengersFor those keeping up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was a bit of an eyebrow raise since many believed Black Widow was being pushed toward a romance with Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) or even Captain America (Chris Evans).

black widow arrow necklaceAnyone seeing "Avengers: Age of Ultron" will tell you Black Widow's role wasn't confined solely to that of aromanticizing female, but many still took issue with her portrayal

Others didn't quite know how to feel:

For fans of Whedon, who has long been known for depicting strong women, the focus on an unnecessary romantic relationship was a bit of an odd departure, especially since the director recently criticized a "Jurassic World" clip for being "sexist" on Twitter.

Joss Whedon Jurassic World Tweet

Whedon later apologized and said that criticizing another movie on such a public forum was "bad form."

Fans aren't the only ones who have been commenting on and criticizing Marvel's depiction of superheroines.

The "Age of Ultron" backlash towards Whedon comes on the heels of Jeremy Renner, who plays the Avenger Hawkeye in the franchise, referring to Black Widow's character as a "slut" in two interviews

This past weekend's SNL also mocked Marvel sexism in a faux ad for the film featuring Scarlett Johansson herself.

This isn't the first time Whedon quit Twitter. He previously left the social platform in 2013. According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Whedon only joined Twitter at the time to help promote his 2012 indie film "Much Ado about Nothing."

"The moment I joined, oh my God, what a responsibility, this is enormous work—very fun, but it really started to take up a huge amount of my head space. I’m making a movie, I got a responsibility, this job doesn’t pay very well. It’s a fascinating medium, it’s a fascinating social phenomenon. People are like, ‘It’s like a drug.’ Yeah, and it’s like a job. It’s just another art form. Until I have a script I truly believe in or a tweet that’s really remarkable, I can just walk away and get back to the storytelling I need to do."

"Gotham" fans flocked to Fox on Monday and gave the Batman prequel series the title of the highest-rated scripted show of the night.

Fans were searching for answers to the season's biggest riddles, and in doing so helped the series to a 13% increase over last week in the demographic most desired by advertisers, adults between the ages of 18-49, according to Nielsen's preliminary numbers. "Gotham's" 1.7 rating/6 share beat out every other scripted series of the evening including ABC's "Castle" (1.4/4), CBS's "2 Broke Girls" (1.6/6) and NBC's "Night Shift" (1.3/4).

As for total viewers, "Gotham" bagged 4.9 million viewers — a 6% increase over last week's 4.6 million viewers.

(Warning: Spoiler alert ahead)

The finale included the expected goodbye to Jada Pinkett Smith's villain Fish Mooney and John Dorney's mafia don Carmine Falcone, though the door is open for them to return. But, it was a solid farewell to mob boss Salvatore Maroni (David Zayas).

But, the biggest revelation of the finale arrived when young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) discovered the bat cave, the place where he would evolve into Batman. All signs point to a more kick-ass Bruce on Season 2.

If you're curious about which nonscripted show won the night for ratings, it was NBC's "The Voice." It scored a 2.3/7 rating in the advertiser-coveted Adults 18-49. But although it's younger-skewing audience beat ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" rating (1.9/6), the dancing competition topped "The Voice" in total viewers by 2.5 million viewers (12.2 million vs. 9.7 million) and was the most-watched show of the night.

‘Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom’

It sounds like our favorite fedora-wearing archaeologist is heading back to the big screen.

Since the Disney purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012, there’s been much speculation on when Indiana Jones would return for a fifth film.

There were even rumors in January that "Guardians of the Galaxy" star Chris Pratt was in talks to star in an Indy reboot.

But within the pages of the June issue of Vanity Fair, we’ve come to learn that there is, in fact, an "Indiana Jones" project in the works.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told the magazine that another Indy movie “will one day be made inside this company. When it will happen, I’m not quite sure. We haven’t started working on a script yet, but we are talking about it.”

No word if Harrison Ford would return to play Dr. Jones (he will next be seen in "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens") or if Pratt will be involved (he’ll star next in "Jurassic World").

Jamie Fox fight vegasIn an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday, Jamie Foxx commented on the backlash following his rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Saturday night’s fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.

“That night my inner ears pack falls off just before I’m supposed to sing,” Foxx told ET. “So I had to try to listen to the organ through the speakers of the stadium and try to catch what it is.”

Following Foxx’s performance, Twitter quickly blew up with criticism of the 47-year-old actor/singer.

But Foxx said that inside the arena “you would have thought I was getting a standing ovation.”

“Then…somebody told me about the internet [backlash] and said, ‘Oh, people are clowning you.’ When I listened I said, ‘Oh yeah, we’re off.’”

It sounds like Foxx is looking forward to redeeming himself.

“I wanted that to be the best moment and, unfortunately, it didn’t go 100% like we wanted,” he said. “But we’ll get another crack at it.”

'Guardians of the Galaxy' director pleads with Joss Whedon's internet trolls in an epic Facebook post

Monday, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” director Joss Whedon quit Twitter after receiving backlash for what some deemed a “sexist” depiction of Black Widow in the film.

*Mini-spoiler* A central storyline to the character is a budding romance with Bruce Banner/The Hulk. *Mini-spoiler*

Whedon is widely known as a champion of strong female characters on screen. Among his works are "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

After the 50-year-old director deemed a recent “Jurassic World” clip “sexist,” many were quick to call Whedon out on Twitter for Widow in “Age of Ultron.” Among the backlash Whedon received were death threats from Twitter users. You can read some of them, many of which are NSFW, here.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn was among those who immediately came to Whedon’s defense on Twitter.

Tuesday afternoon, Gunn, expanded on that Tweet in detail. In a long message with fans on Facebook, he proposed a call for a change toward internet commenters and internet hate in general.

My plea to all of you - and this is nothing new - is that we all try to be a little kinder, on the Internet and elsewhere. And, honestly, that includes being kind to the people who are tweeting this nonsense. I don't believe you can tweet about wanting to find a movie director and "curbstomp" him and be a happy person. That person's statement might make you a little angry - that makes me angry too. But thank God the circumstances of my life and your life didn't lead us to being the person that has the need to anonymously tweet that to someone on the Internet. And, as much as we may want to respond with vitriol to these tweets, I think that just creates more insanity.

Gunn drew from personal experience in which he recalled how a single tweet affected him. As a result, the tweet made him reconsider the content he puts in his future bodies of work.

Whedon is the latest celebrity to receive death threats. Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez are among other stars who have previously been threatened on social media

Read the note in full below:

Imagine being a guy, like Joss Whedon, who has committed his life to fandom and to creating the best characters he possibly can, characters he loves, and has spent two years of his life working on a movie, and then has to wake up to this shit on Twitter. Yes, I know - Age of Ultron has an "A" Cinemascore, and far and away most people loved it. But the angry contingent of fandom is getting more aggressive all the time, and it's difficult to block out as a person in the public eye.

As a young person I was very angry, and it's something I have worked on, both personally and through years of therapy. And if I can say one truth about anger, it is that anger is almost never anger. Anger - especially aggressive and abusive anger - is a way to deal with feeling insecure, sad, hurt, vulnerable, powerless, fearful, or confused. Those feelings, for many of us, are a lot more difficult to deal with and acknowledge than anger. Anger makes us feel "right". And powerful. But it also usually exacerbates whatever the underlying, more uncomfortable feeling is.

A couple months ago someone on Twitter wrote me that something one of my characters said in my movie hurt him. I've gotten hundreds of tweets from people angry about moments in my films over the years, and I just ignore them, or get angry in return. But that one tweet affected me profoundly. The last thing I want to do with my work is hurt someone, especially someone who already feels disenfranchised. That made me think about what I write and what I put in my films, and I will be more thoughtful about situations like it in the future. That is, one honest and vulnerable tweet affected more change in me than hundreds of angry ones.

So, again, it's easy to be outraged by these tweets. But whatever these angry tweeters are in need of, I don't think it's more anger and more rage thrown back at them on Twitter. I actually think that's what they're seeking. But what they need is something different. Compassion, maybe? A kind request for boundaries? I don't know. Maybe you guys have some ideas.

And by the way - Yes, I know there are real issues at play here. But, again, I don't think the way to affect change is through rage. That is just going to increase whatever divide you're experiencing in the first place. I believe that there are a handful of truly evil, awful human beings out there. But the majority of us on all sides of an issue think we're doing the right thing and are doing the best we can. If we assume that of each other, it makes life a lot easier.

Love you all,
james

First Sherlock, now Watson: Martin Freeman jumps on the Marvel bandwagon for 'Captain America: Civil War'

Martin Freeman, star of “The Hobbit” trilogy and lead actor on the popular shows “Fargo” and “Sherlock,” will make his debut in the rapidly-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe in next year’s “Captain America: Civil War.” We're not sure yet exactly what his role will be.

"Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us," producer Kevin Feige said in a press release. "We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

With this addition, Marvel may have secured its UK demographic: Now it can claim it has both Sherlock and Holmes from the popular BBC show “Sherlock” as characters in future films. Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock Holmes, will play the sorcerer supreme Dr. Stephen Strange in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” coming in late 2016.

Though Cumberbatch will get to star in his own Marvel film, it’s unclear if Freeman’s character will receive his own solo treatment at any point. All we know is he will appear in some form in “Captain America: Civil War,” which already features a giant roster of names and actors, including Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther).

Spider-Man also plays a vital role in the “Civil War” storyline from the Marvel comics, so unless Freeman is playing the web slinger himself, it will be interesting to see how Marvel has chosen to utilize Freeman’s versatility as an actor. Perhaps he will only provide a voice to an animated character, in the same way Josh Brolin, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel provided their voices to CGI characters in “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

"Captain America: Civil War" hits theaters May 6, 2016.

Dave Grohl isn’t in HBO's new Kurt Cobain documentary, but he wanted to be

Dave GrohlFor close to two decades, Courtney Love and the surviving members of the band Nirvana  Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic  have feuded over the band’s finances, among other things.

However, with the Monday premiere of the HBO documentary "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck," which has the approval of the Cobain family and band, it looks like the relationship between the wife of the band’s legendary deceased frontman and its members is improving.

Following a screening of the documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, the film’s director, Brett Morgen (“The Kid Stays in the Picture”), and Love took the stage to discuss the film and addressed why Grohl isn't in the film but Novoselic is.

“I wanted to keep [the film] as intimate as possible, so I didn’t feel the need for multiple members of Nirvana [to be in it],” Morgen told the packed audience at Spring Studio in Lower Manhattan. “But I didn’t want to be in a Q&A and answer this question all the time, so I asked if I could talk to Kirst and Dave. I heard back that Dave was in the middle of doing his album [and was unavailable]. Which is fine, and I was fine with that."

Dave Grohl But Morgen added that two weeks before premiering the film at the Sundance Film Festival this past January, Morgen got word that Grohl was done promoting the album and was available to be interviewed for the film.

“So I was like, Alright, we’ll try,” said Morgen. “We did the interview and Dave was great and awesome, but I couldn’t do what I’d already done.”

Morgen had already shown the film at Sundance and the Berlin Film Festival when he tried to work the Grohl interview into the film. But he said by that time he had “lost the feel to evaluate it anymore” and decided to leave it on the cutting room floor.

Love did not comment on Sunday about Grohl not being in the film, but if previous Nirvana events are any indication, it seems the two are currently in a better place.

The band and Love had been at odds since the suicide death of Cobain in 1994.

Kurt CobainLove, Grohl, and Novoselic partnered in a LLC in 1997, which controls band assets like unreleased music, images, and requires a unanimous vote on major decisions about the use of anything related to the band.

KurtCobain_HBODocumentaryFilmsIn 2001, Love sued Grohl and Novoselic over the unreleased song “You Know You’re Right” included in a Nirvana box set due to be released the fall of that year, and asked the court to dissolve the LLC partnership.

Grohl and Novoselic counter-sued, stating that Love is “motivated solely by her blind self-interest.”

The lawsuit was settled in 2002 with all parties staying in the LLC and “You Know You’re Right” being featured in a retrospective album.

But things with Love and Grohl went sour again in 2011 when Love accused Grohl of seducing her daughter with Cobain, Frances Bean Cobain. (Grohl has said the accusation is untrue.)

Fancis and CourtneyBut at last year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction of Nirvana, it seemed everyone was on good terms again.

Love not only went on stage with Grohl and Novoselic to accept the honor, but she and Grohl even hugged on stage.

Nirvana hall of fameLove followed the event by tweeting:

At the Tribeca Q&A, Morgen was asked how difficult it was to get the full cooperation of Cobain’s family and the surviving band members to take part in this project. He admitted that when he started working on the film in 2007 it was a challenge, but because Frances Bean Cobain was involved everyone agreed to take part.

Love then interjected on how everyone felt about each other at the time:

“It was a tsunami of s---, and I caused most of it.”

Science says hip-hop is the pinnacle of American music

Jay Z call me phone

A bunch of researchers in the UK have applied a scientific approach to find what type of music has the biggest impact in America.

Ultimately, they boiled it down to just three distinct periods when a particular genre ruled the airwaves.

According to their findings, the genre that has the biggest impact is hip hop.

Press Association reports via Yahoo UK that the researchers from Queen Mary, University of London and Imperial College teamed up with Last.fm, to study samples of about 17,000 songs, dating from 1960 to 2010.

Those songs appeared on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart at some point during that period.

An algorithm categorized the songs according to their musical properties – right down to the chord patterns, instruments and equipment used and tonal characteristics. They boiled all of that down and identified three key music "revolutions" where a particular genre ruled the charts:

  • 1964: The "British Invasion," ushered in by the The Beatles and Rolling Stones
  • 1983: New wave and post-punk rock
  • 1991: Hip Hop

Among those, "Hip Hop's big entrance into the charts in 1991 was said to be the most far reaching," the study shows. Lead researcher, Dr. Mattias Mauch admits some will disagree with their scientific approach "and think it's too limited for such an emotional subject."

Mauch compared hip hop with the British invasion, saying groups like the Beatles "merely followed existing American trends," while hip hop helped empower marginalized black youth nationwide.

The researchers insist their motivations are purely scientific, saying "Those who wish to make claims about how and when popular music changed can no longer appeal to anecdote, connoisseurship and theory unadorned by data."

Joss Whedon fires back at rumors he left Twitter because of feminists: ‘That is horses**t'

joss whedon age of ultron

Following the opening of "Avengers: Age of Ultron," filmmaker Joss Whedon decided to delete his Twitter account.

Whedon, who has always been an outspoken voice on Twitter, so the fact that he left with no explanation led to a lot of speculation. Many folks immediately pointed their fingers at tweets pouring in from people who were angry enough about the film's portrayal of Black Widow to send Whedon death threats. Many of these people declared themselves to be feminists, which led to the belief that being hailed as a misogynist was why Whedon left the platform.

"That is horses**t," Whedon told BuzzFeed News during a lengthy interview.

This doesn't mean that he wasn't well aware of the threats and negativity hurled at him.

“I’ve said before, when you declare yourself politically, you destroy yourself artistically,” he told BuzzFeed. “Because suddenly that’s the litmus test for everything you do — for example, in my case, feminism. If you don’t live up to the litmus test of feminism in this one instance, then you’re a misogynist. It circles directly back upon you.”

avengers age of ultron joss whedon scarlett johansson

Yet, he never felt any sense of danger from it.

“Nothing that made me go, ‘Wait, they’re calling from my house,’” he said. “It was like, OK, these guys don’t understand about hyperbole.”

Ultimately, Whedon left to work on his creative and personal life.

“I just thought, Wait a minute, if I’m going to start writing again, I have to go to the quiet place,” Whedon said. “And this is the least quiet place I’ve ever been in my life. … It’s like taking the bar exam at Coachella. It’s like, Um, I really need to concentrate on this! Guys! Can you all just… I have to… It’s super important for my law!”

Whedon has a reputation for writing strong, female roles. Last year, he also stood adamantly behind feminist critic Anita Sarkeesian, as she faced death threats of her own during the GamerGate controversy. Whedon feels that anything that he can do for the cause won't be solved on Twitter.

"For someone like me even to argue about feminism — it’s not a huge win. Because ultimately I’m just a rich, straight, white guy. You don’t really change people’s minds through a tweet. You change it through your actions."

I went to Kim Kardashian's book signing event, and it was complete chaos

kim kardashian selfie book signing

A book signing for Kim Kardashian West's "Selfish" at a midtown Manhattan Barnes & Noble Tuesday started out as a peaceful gathering of fans, but soon turned tense as animal rights activists transformed the gathering into a protest and a few fan altercations took place.

The book, which debuted this week, is full of selfies — some never before seen by the public — of Kardashian and her friends and family.

The star was at the store to meet and greet fans, and we went to check out the scene.

For all the details about the signing, click through this slideshow.

People were lined up outside Barnes & Noble, from the store's Fifth Avenue and 46th Street entrance to the middle of 46th and 47th streets, almost to Sixth Avenue.

"Selfish" came out yesterday and is actually Kardashian's second book. She co-authored "Kardashian Konfidential" with sisters Khloé and Kourtney in 2010.

Barnes & Noble employees were tasked with crowd control, continually asking Kim fans not to block the sidewalk.

Kardashian was ensconced on the second floor of the store. As guests continued to wait, the temperature outside climbed. Rumors flew that the air-conditioning was broken inside and that, worse yet, Kardashian would not be taking any selfies with fans.

Brendan McCann, center left, arrived at 6:15 a.m. to wait for Kardashian to sign his copies of "Selfish."

"I just love Kim," he said, "and I've never gotten a chance to meet her before. I love that she has this platform, especially with the stuff Bruce is going through... I think she has made girls feel more comfortable in curvy bodies."

When asked how he'd respond to people who might criticize anyone who buys a book of selfies, McCann said, "Look at the business side of it. This woman literally released a 450-page book of pictures of herself that she took on her phone, and has hundreds of people showing up to meet her... If I could sell my book of selfies for $20 at Barnes & Noble, I would too. Why wouldn't you?
