The amazing story of how the Aston Martin DB10 became James Bond's latest ride

0
0

Aston Martin DB10 James Bond SideAston Martin's handcrafted sports cars are world famous for their power, beauty, and soul.

But Aston has also enjoyed a 50-year run as the official wheels of the world's most famous super spy — James Bond.

As 007 gears up for his next adventure "Spectre," this tradition continues with the brand new Aston Martin DB10. But there's one major difference — the DB10 is for James Bond only.

In fact, the car was developed with the input of director Sam Mendes and the film's producers.

"It's never been done like this before," Aston Martin chief creative officer Marek Reichman told Business Insider. " For a movie character to have a major manufacturer create a car just for him is really quite special."

But the story of how the DB10 became the latest Bond car is even more incredible.

According to Reichman, Mendes and producer Barbara Broccoli dropped by the design studio to have a look at a production Aston the company had been preparing for the movie. However, as the filmmakers were examining the car, a sketch hanging on the studio wall caught Mendes' eye.

Aston Martin DB10 RomeReichman told the director the car in the sketch didn't actually exist. To which Mendes replied, "Great, could we make that just for James Bond?"

The result of that question is a limited run of 10 special James Bond Astons to be used exclusively for the film. Which sadly means that no one outside of the production team will have the chance to drive the car.

Fortunately, according to Reichman, elements of the DB10 design may make their way into future production Astons, as the company looks to revamp its whole lineup over the next five years.

James Bond's 24th adventure hits theaters on November 6, 2015.

Jerry Seinfeld calls YouTube a 'giant garbage can'

Jerry Seinfeld

Jerry Seinfeld spoke to a crowded theater yesterday at an Upfront event for Sony's streaming service, Crackle, and he didn't hold back on his opinions.

The comedian left TV for Crackle in 2012 and hosts a popular series on the service called Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

At the event, he proudly declared that "TV is over" and that he's "found the internet to be the most freeing experience" he's ever had, according to a transcript by Tubefilter.

"When you get to a certain point in the business, what a man is looking for in a network is the same as in his underwear," he explained. "A little bit of support and a little bit of freedom. That’s exactly what Crackle offered."

That said, he isn't a fan of all corners of the internet. The star had sharp words for YouTube.

When asked for his thoughts on user generated content Seinfeld said, "The less the better. I don’t want to see this crap. We have a giant garbage can called YouTube for user-generated content. We’re trying to generate a little higher level."

He explained that "show business is for talent, that’s who should be in it. But let’s keep it in its hierarchy."

"I like being at the top of the pyramid," he joked.

The most outrageous fashion trends spotted at Coachella

Flower beard coachella

In recent years, the annual Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival has become as much a fashion show as it is about the music.

This year, trends on the fields included the typical floral headpieces, crazily braided hair, loads of jewelry, and even one floral beard.

But when it's nearly 100-degrees in the desert on the outskirts of Palm Springs, clothing is limited — and sometimes, optional.

Katy Perry (center) rocked a giant, tribal necklace while roaming the VIP area at Coachella with friends.

You can never have on too many jewels at the festival, including on your face.

Or around the waist.

The home was last listed for $37.5 million, though it first appeared on the market in 2013 for $42 million.

The duplex apartment has a massive great room, five bedrooms, and 5.5 bathrooms. Even better, the apartment came fully furnished, and as you can see from the listing photos, the rocker has great taste.

Bon Jovi bought the place for $24 million back in 2007, according to Curbed NY.

The apartment is located on Mercer Street, in NYC's trendy SoHo neighborhood.

It has 11 rooms in total, including a great room with 11-foot ceilings.

How to get the new 'Star Wars' emojis

star wars episode 7 millennium falcon

To commemorate the Star Wars Celebration event happening in Anaheim, California, Twitter announced in a blog post that it created three new "Star Wars" emojis.

Twitter partnered with Disney and Lucasfilm to create the three emojis: a stormtrooper, C3PO, and the new droid from "The Force Awakens," BB8.

These emojis, however, will not be available in your phone's emoji keyboard; to access them, you'll need a Twitter account. Each emoji can be created by tweeting out the name of the emoji as a hashtag: #Stormtrooper, #C3PO, and #BB8.

Once you tweet out the hashtag, the emojis will appear.

The emojis will show up only within Twitter and its mobile app for now, so you will not be able to copy and paste the emojis into iMessage.

Twitter says it will release more custom "Star Wars" emojis, "including iconic legacy characters and a handful of new characters."

Several celebrities have been spotted wearing Apple Watches ahead of the device's launch on April 24. On Thursday, during the "Star Wars Celebration" in Anaheim, California, the director of the next "Star Wars" film coming later this year, answered questions on stage while wearing a steel Apple Watch.

The panel also had a few other surprise guests, including droids from the film R2-D2 and BB-8, but it was hard not to pay attention to Abrams' wrist every time he lifted his hand to speak into the microphone.

Bob Iger, chairman of the Walt Disney Company, which now owns the "Star Wars" franchise, was also sitting in the audience. Iger serves on Apple's Board of Directors, and he was good friends with co-founder Steve Jobs before his death. The companies are notoriously friendly with one another.

The Apple Watch launches April 24. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" opens nationwide on Dec. 18.

The new 'Star Wars' trailer appears to confirm one of the movie's first big plot leaks

The second teaser trailer for the new "Star Wars" movie, "The Force Awakens," appears to confirm previously leaked details about the plot.

If you don't want anything spoiled for you, stop reading now.

For months, allegedly leaked plot details for "The Force Awakens" have said the story will focus on Luke Skywalker's original lightsaber, the one he lost when Darth Vader chopped off his hand in "Empire Strikes Back." The lightsaber fell down this deep pit:

darth sykwalkerBut the lightsaber actually has more meaning than that. It originally belonged to Luke's father, Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Anakin lost the lightsaber in "Revenge of the Sith" after losing a fight to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenobi gave the weapon to Luke in "A New Hope."

Now here's the real potential spoiler. Don't say we didn't warn you:

According to the leaked plot details that were first published on Badass Digest, Luke's old lightsaber makes its way through space and onto a planet where two of the new main characters Rey (played by Daisey Ridley) and Finn (played by John Boyega) find it. Rey and Finn recognize the lightsaber as a Jedi weapon and go on a search for Luke, who has been in hiding for several years.

Well, it looks like that leak may be pretty close to correct. In the new teaser trailer for "Force Awakens," we get a clear view of the lightsaber:

The five young men of Team Liquid earn more than $60,000 each, plus tens of thousands through sponsorship and streaming deals, and live for free in an LA condo just for being good at League of Legends, the most popular competitive video game in the world.

Altogether the best of them are easily taking home six figures.

Despite a roster loaded with top players, it has been stuck around fourth place in North America. With the addition of a former world champion, however, hopes are high that the team will earn a shot at the World Championship's $1-million prize.

Being a professional gamer is a sweet gig, but it's not all fantasy. With high pressure and low job security, gamers play up to 14 hours a day to stay on top of their craft, all while devoting their formative years to skills that may have little marketable value later in life.

That's why Alex “Xpecial” Chu told his younger brother, a talented gamer in his own right, to stay out of pro-gaming. “I know how hard it is,” he says.

We visited the team in Santa Monica, California, to get a first-hand look.

Team Liquid lives in a duplex in Santa Monica. I arrived late in the morning to hang out with the team as they prepared for game day.

When I arrived around 12:30 p.m., most of the team was still asleep. As Team Liquid owner Steve Arhancet told me, "Gamers run on a different schedule than the rest of the world." Most of Team Liquid wakes up around 12 p.m. and many stay up playing the game until 3 a.m. or later.

The only people awake were Liquid coach Peter "PtotheD" Zhang (left) and Diego "Quas" Ruiz, a quiet 23-year-old from Maracaibo, Venezuela. Ruiz honed his skills at League by using the computers at an internet cafe run by his mother. He's in the US now on a professional sports visa.

Will Ferrell thinks his 'SNL' portrayal of George W. Bush influenced the 2000 election

The film, directed by Bao Nguyen, was full of revealing moments through interviews with the show’s creator, Lorne Michaels, and the “Not Ready For Primetime” alums.

One moment that especially stood out was Will Ferrell’s thoughts on his portrayal of George W. Bush on the show.

Ferrell said in the doc that he believed the popularity of him playing Bush on the sketch show humanized the real George W. to the country. He implied that this may have influenced voters to choose Bush in the 2000 election — in which Bush won over Vice President Al Gore by only a few hundred votes — and his re-election in 2004.

Throughout Bush’s presidency, Ferrell played Bush as a dim-witted, hard-partying, good ol’ boy.

Don't throw away your old 'Guitar Hero' instruments just yet

0

"Rock Band 4"

When a new "Guitar Hero" game was announced earlier this week, we told you to throw out your old instruments. After all, none of them will work with "Guitar Hero Live," the game arriving this fall on a mess of game platforms.

But not so fast!

Like "Guitar Hero," the "Rock Band" franchise returns this fall. Unlike "Guitar Hero," though, "Rock Band 4" will support your old plastic guitar controllers. Not just the ones you got with previous "Rock Band" games, but also that of the competition.

"We're planning to support everything that we can: That includes all of the old 'Rock Band' controllers, and all the old 'Guitar Hero' controllers," project director Daniel Sussman told us in an interview Thursday afternoon.

And that makes sense. The developers of the "Rock Band" franchise, Harmonix Music Systems, are also the developers behind the first two "Guitar Hero" games. The two franchises share a lot of DNA: Both aim to create a guitar-centric karaoke experience, and they both deliver it in a similar way.

In "Guitar Hero Live," publisher Activision is intentionally breaking away from the past. The new guitar controller is emblematic of this shift – rather than use the traditional five-button setup (below, right), "Guitar Hero Live" uses a new controller with a six-button setup (below, left; three buttons on top, three below)."Guitar Hero" guitars

What that means for people buying the $100 "Guitar Hero" game this fall is that none of their old plastic guitar controllers work with the new game. That's a serious bummer for folks who've been holding out for a return to the franchise since it was paused back in 2011.

Harmonix apparently agrees – here's Sussman on the subject:

Our position is really all about respect for our consumers and for the money that they have spent to get into the game space in the first place. They spend a fortune on games: on consoles, on hardware, and we're sensitive to that. We play those games too. We buy all the same stuff. A world where you need to have three different guitars and two drum sets and all this stuff is...we don't want to support that world.

Whether the new, reconfigured "Guitar Hero Live" controller will work in "Rock Band 4" is another question altogether. Sussman believes it's possible, but he's just as in the dark as we are.

"I don't see anything on it that makes me think that we couldn't figure out a way to support it," he says. "And yet I won't know for sure until we get one in the office."

Both "Guitar Hero Live" and "Rock Band 4" launch this fall.

The 'Game of Thrones' writers had to answer this trick question about the book before they were allowed to make the series

0
0

Jon Snow Season 5

In 2006, screenwriters D.B. Weiss and David Benioff approached George R.R. Martin, the author of the acclaimed A Song of Ice and Fire series, to see if he was open to a television adaption.

That meeting spawned the creation of HBO's "Game of Thrones" series; now the most popular series the network's history. But many fans of the show don't realize what Weiss and Benioff had to do in order to secure Martin's trust.

In a Q&A back in 2013, the story was told of how the three of them sat down for a lunch that was eventually dragged into a five hour meeting. Martin recounted, "I did ask them a few pointed question to determine whether they had actually read the books, and they gave me the right answers."

When asked to specify what they were grilled on, Weiss elaborated:

He asked us, “Who is Jon Snow’s mother?”  We had discussed it before, and we gave a shocking answer.  At that point, George didn’t actually say whether or not we were right or wrong, but his smile was his tell.  We knew we had passed the Wonka test, at that point.

This is an impressive anecdote, given that a many readers of the books typically miss the hints given for Jon's true parentage, and it's unlikely that many casual show watchers would have a slightest idea of the truth.

Warning: Spoilers ahead

Stark game of thronesJon Snow is presented in the story as a bastard of Winterfell; born as the product of an affair between Ned Stark and a woman he met while off at war. But throughout the books and the show, many hints were given that this may not be the truth.

First, there is constant reminder that Ned is a fiercely honorable man who takes oaths very seriously. Is that the type of man who would father a bastard and then raise him as his own, bringing shame to his wife? Then there are the stories about Lyanna Stark, Ned's sister, and then-prince Rhaegar Targaryen. The history told in Westeros says that Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna, sparking the war that eventually left the Targaryens in ruin and Robert Baratheon as king.

But there is evidence that Lyanna was actually in love with Rhaegar, and ran away with him so they could be together. In the first book, A Game of Thrones, Ned has a flashback where he remembers seeing Lyanna "in a bed of blood", and her last words are "Promise me, Ned." What could she have been asking him? This is where Jon comes in. It is highly likely that Jon Snow is actually the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Ned promised to raise him as his own, in order to protect him from the enemies of the Targaryens that were now in power.

This theory is all but confirmed, through many hints from George R.R. Martin himself as well as cast members of the show. But the fact that Weiss and Benioff were able to correctly guess this, when only three of the current five books was released, is quite astounding. It's no wonder that Martin trusted them to adapt the series - they knew what they were doing.

In their recent interview with Variety, Weiss explained again how their initial meeting had gone and expanded on how things could have ended differently.

I think with us, he understood that we didn’t have to fake anything. We had become instantly and genuinely obsessed with his books to the point where we knew lots and lots about the minutia of them — and then he asked us the question about Jon Snow’s parentage. Maybe if we had gotten it wrong, he would have let us do it anyway. It was still obvious that we love this, and that we wanted to do it more than anything in the world, and that we would respect it and honor it. I think getting (the answer) right probably helped.

Who knows what would have happened had Weiss and Benioff not been as obsessive as they were, but fans should be relieved that the show was put in the hands of such dedicated and creative writers.

An explanation for everything you see in the latest 'Star Wars' trailer

0
0

The second teaser trailer for the new "Star Wars" movie, "The Force Awakens," is out.

It's short, but packed with a lot of stuff. Here's an explanation for everything you see in the new trailer.

We start out on this desert planet. A speeder rolls across the landscape. There's a crashed X-Wing in the foreground and a crumbling Star Destroyer in the background. At a "Star Wars" even Thursday, Daisy Ridley, a lead actress in the movie, said her character Rey starts out on a desert planet where she scavenges parts. This is probably that planet. It appears a lot of the old junk from the war between the Rebels and the Empire ended up here.

star wars episode vii trailer desert planet

Next, we see Darth Vader's scorched helmet. Remember, Luke Skywalker burned Darth Vader's body at the end of "Return of the Jedi." We hear Luke's voice say: "The Force is strong in my family..." This is also a line from "Return of the Jedi."

star wars episode VII trailer darth vader helmet

Then we see this mysterious cloaked figure touch R2-D2. He has a robotic hand. There's a good chance this is Luke. (Luke lost his hand in "The Empire Strikes Back.") The voiceover continues. "My father has it..."

r2 d2 star wars the force awakens

Luke continues: "I have it... my sister has it..." We see someone hand a lightsaber to someone else. This is the same lightsaber Luke lost when Darth Vader cut off his hand at the end of "The Empire Strikes Back." It's also the lightsaber Luke's father Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader had when he was younger. Obi-Wan Kenobi gave the lightsaber to Luke in "A New Hope."

lightsaber star wars force awakens

Finally, Luke's voiceover says: "You have that power too." It's unclear who he's talking to though. Could it be his son or daughter? Could it be someone else? We have no idea. If we had to speculate, we'd say Luke is talking to one of the three new main characters of the movie: Poe Dameron, Rey, or Finn. We see Poe Dameron in the next shot, yelling with glee as he pilots his X-Wing. All we know about Poe so far is that he's an X-Wing pilot with a mission from Princess Leia.

star wars episode vii trailer poe dameron

Next we see Kylo Ren, the villain, swinging his lightsaber. His lightsaber has three blades.

Then the trailer cuts to a quick shot of Rey (the woman on the left), Finn, and the droid BB8 running away from an explosion.

Then the trailer cuts to Kylo Ren again. This is the first time we see him from the front and get a clear view of his creepy mask. We don't know much at all about this character. The rumor is that Adam Driver plays him though.

Next, we see a bunch of stormtroopers at some sort of rally. It has a creepy Nazi vibe. It appears what remains of the Empire have reorganized and are up to no good.

During the event on Thursday, John Boyega, the actor who plays Finn, confirmed that Finn is a Stormtrooper when the movie begins. The trailer shows this scene of a TIE fighter blowing up a bunch of stormtroopers and their fighters.

Then we see Finn looking panicked. Speculation: Finn somehow has a change of heart about being an evil stormtrooper and escapes.

The next shot gives us a look at the new Star Destroyer design. These are the big ships the bad guys use.

Here's a crazy one. We see a stormtrooper in shiny metal armor. Stormtroopers usually wear white armor. We have no clue who this guy is or what's so special about him.

There's BB8 again. He's so cute. It's safe to say he'll be the comic relief of the film. It also looks like he's inside Han Solo's ship, the Millennium Falcon, in this shot.

Back to the desert planet. We see Rey ...

WikiLeaks just published 30,000 documents from the Sony hack

Julian Assange

WikiLeaks has put the documents and emails obtained by hackers from Sony Pictures Entertainment in a searchable online database, the group announced on Thursday.

All 173,132 emails and 30,287 documents stolen from the movie studio late last year are now available for anyone to search, browse and view, founder Julian Assange said in a press release.

"This archive shows the inner workings of an influential multinational corporation," Assange said. "It is newsworthy and at the centre of a geo-political conflict. It belongs in the public domain ... WikiLeaks will ensure it stays there."

The reaction of Sony Pictures was fast and furious. The studio released a statement, according to the Los Angeles Times, condemning the act:

The attackers used the dissemination of stolen information to try to harm SPE and its employees, and now WikiLeaks regrettably is assisting them in that effort," said a Sony Pictures spokesperson in a statement. "We vehemently disagree with WikiLeaks’ assertion that this material belongs in the public domain and will continue to fight for the safety, security, and privacy of our company and its more than 6,000 employees.

The treasure trove of data shows the inner workings of one of Hollywood's biggest movie studios.

Information made public in the document dump ranges from political donations to President Barack Obama and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and discussions about the studio's lawsuit against pirating site Megaupload to gossip about Sony's stable of movie stars and details on how it even spied on rival studios.

"Documents in the archive reveal the budget breakdown for Oliver Stone's rival picture Snowden, which is currently in production," said WikiLeaks.

The archive also reveals how many government officials were in regular contact with SPE, about 100 .gov email addresses can be found, which also included "connections to the US military-industrial complex," per WikiLeaks.

Details on lobbying efforts through various trade groups are also made public in the documents.

The emails and documents were initially stolen last year by hackers who call themselves the "Guardians of Peace," (GOP) a group that U.S. officials have said are affiliated with North Korea.

GOP's scorched-earth campaign seemed to center around the impending Christmas Day release of "The Interview," a satire about a convoluted plot to assassinate North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

The group's threat to blow up theaters showing the Seth Rogan-James Franco comedy never materialized after all major theater chains pulled the film from their screens and it was left to indie cinemas and streaming services.

In the days leading up the movie's opening, GOP released movie stars' personal documents and emails describing SPE executives' criticisms of Adam Sandler.

In response, Sony stopped using computers and cell phones were abandoned in favor of fax machines and hand-written notes. A Slate report likened it to working in the Stone Age after it was revealed that Sony Pictures' entire infrastructure was compromised.

Sony Pictures has since rebounded and most people have forgotten about "The Interview." It appeared as if the scandal was finally in the rear-view mirror.

Until today.

Sony 'strongly condemns' WikiLeaks 'criminal act' of publishing leaked e-mails

On Thursday, Julian Assange and WikiLeaks published 173,132 emails and 30,287 documents stemming from the Sony hack in a searchable database.

The new dump of private information was "totally blindsiding the studio and its public relations team early Thursday," according to Variety, noting that the studio is now weighing its legal options.

Sony has since responded to the privacy invasion, saying in a statement that the new database is a "criminal act."

The cyber-attack on Sony Pictures was a malicious criminal act, and we strongly condemn the indexing of stolen employee and other private and privileged information on WikiLeaks. The attackers used the dissemination of stolen information to try to harm SPE and its employees, and now WikiLeaks regrettably is assisting them in that effort. We vehemently disagree with WikiLeaks’ assertion that this material belongs in the public domain and will continue to fight for the safety, security, and privacy of our company and its more than 6,000 employees.

WikiLeaks' Assange, however, argued in a press release that the public has a right to the hacked Sony information, which was initially leaked ahead of the release of "The Interview":

This archive shows the inner workings of an influential multinational corporation. It is newsworthy and at the centre of a geo-political conflict. It belongs in the public domain.

WikiLeaks has a commitment to preserving the historical archive. This means ensuring archives that have made it to the public domain remain there regardless of legal or political pressure, and in a way that is accessible and useable to the public. WikiLeaks' publication of The Sony Archives will ensure this database remains accessible to the public for years to come."

SNL 911 1 final

Wednesday night Bao Nguyen’s documentary “Live From New York!,” which looks back on 40 years of “Saturday Night Live,” opened the 14th annual Tribeca Film Festival.

A moving moment for the audience was when the film touched on the first “SNL” show following 9/11.

The memories are recounted by the show’s creator, Lorne Michaels, and then-Mayor of New York City, Rudolph Giuliani. But the director of the episode, Beth McCarthy-Miller, also provides her recollections and gave some unique insight on the opening of the show.

She said that the first-responders standing behind Giuliani in the episode had all been down at Ground Zero. “They all had this thousand-yard stare,” she said in the documentary.

At the start of the show, McCarthy-Miller said she was determined to get all of the first-responders’ faces in the same shot, and tried to get as many of them in the shot when the camera went in tighter.

SNL 911 2 finalShe also said that at one point during Giuliani speaking, she even had to step out of the control room as she was so overcome with emotion by the moment.

“I had to step away and cry,” she said. “All those people who had lost their lives” were still very much on everyone’s minds.

McCarthy-Miller said it was Michaels who came up with the famous exchange between he and Giuliani at the end of the opening:

Michaels: “Can we be funny?”

Giuliani: “Why start now.”

SNL 911 3 finalIt was a powerful moment not only in the movie but its setting Wednesday night. The Tribeca Film Festival was created by Robert De Niro and his producing partner, Jane Rosenthal, following the attacks on September 11, 2001, in hopes to bring business back to lower Manhattan.

Here’s the complete opening of the “SNL” episode.
