DAY IN THE LIFE: Behind-The-Scenes With Fashion Designer Devi Kroell

$
0
0

Devi-KroellDevi Kroell is the face behind DAX GABLER, a luxurious collection of textural and sculptural handbags.

The Austrian-born, New York-based designer is both glamorous and elegant, speaking with just the slightest hint of an accent. As it turns out, she's the daughter of a diplomat and spent her childhood in several countries, including Indonesia, Israel, Switzerland, and France.

Her experiences abroad later influenced her designs, and was one of the key reasons why she chose to feature so much of her signature "exotic" throughout the collection.

In 2006 Devi won the CFDA Swarovski Perry Ellis Award for Accessory Design, which she describes as the ultimate award–the "Oscar" of fashion. Since then, her designs have been featured in Marie Claire, Harper's Bazaar, Dansk, and Flare (to name just a few!)

In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, Kroell stated that her DAX GABLER Summer 2012 collection is "a mix of texture and sculptural elements that is both multifunctional yet dressy."

For all aspiring designers, she offers this piece of advice: "You have to bring something new, a concept, an idea...it has to be something that isn't around yet. You want people to say 'Wow! I haven't seen that before!' From there on, it's very easy to grow but you need a novel idea to start."

While the DAX GABLER collection remains only handbags at the moment, Devi says "she loves new challenges" and would love to eventually expand her lifestyle brand.

In the meantime, she's keeping plenty busy.

Hello! I'm Devi Kroell.

I'm the founder and designer of DAX GABLER, a new line of exclusive and tightly-edited pieces I think are must haves.

Early morning.

My day starts with a security check in front of the Stock Exchange—this is right next to where I live. My four-legged friends love to hop into the trunk of my convertible Mini Cooper (this car is a total conversation starter! Go figure!)

Next stop?

My morning cup of coffee from Joe's in the West Village.

Alan Horn-New Disney Chief

Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger, has officially announced that former Warner Borthers Chief Alan Horn, will run Disney Studios.

The official announcement will be made this afternoon, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Horn worked at Warner Brothers for over a decade and most notably guided the studio through huge successes like the "Harry Potter" franchise, "The Dark Knight," the "Ocean's Eleven" franchise and more.

Here's what Iger had to say about his choice:

“Alan not only has an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience in the business, he has a true appreciation of movie making as both an art and a business. He’s earned the respect of the industry for driving tremendous, sustained creative and financial success, and is also known and admired for his impeccable taste and integrity. He brings all of this to his new role leading our studio group, and I truly look forward to working with him.”

Horn will officially take over the job on June 11th and will be in charge of managing production, distribution and marketing for Disney, Pixar and Marvel live-action and animated features. He will also take on overseeing marketing and distribution (no production) for DreamWorks Studio and music and theatrical divisions for Disney.

This news comes only one month after former Disney chief Rich Ross resigned after the mounting tension and pressure that came with overseeing the big-budget flop "John Carter." Horn looks to be a real God-send for Iger and hopefully Horn can help the studio make up for its losses from the first half of this year.

The Dark Knight Rises logo

If you're a Batman fan, the biggest question weighing on your mind right now is, "When in the world are "The Dark Knight Rises" tickets going on sale?"

Earlier today, film blog Slashfilm noticed Movies.com tweeted about "The Dark Knight Rises" tickets going on sale June 11 noon PST; however, the tweet has since gone down.

Though no official announcement has been made for the official ticket sale date of the film, numerous sites across the Web appear to be in agreement.

Cinemark Theatres created a Facebook event for to purchase advance tickets on their site for 6/11. A few other theaters  also appear to have settled on the same date.

the dark knight rises ticket announcement

Want another surefire way to secure tickets?

You could attempt to get your hands on a Batman-themed Lumia 900. Every purchase comes with free tickets to see the film. However, only 900 (gosh they're so clever) of the limited-edition phone will be released.

We've reached out to both Fandango representatives and Movies.com for a response, and will update accordingly as soon as we get the green light.

Since we know you're itching for more of the Caped Crusader, we'll leave you with the latest TV spot:

The Oklahoma City Thunder Wouldn't Let Lil Wayne Into Last Night's Game

Rap megastar Lil Wayne can usually be seen near courtside for Miami Heat games, but last night he wanted to take in game 3 of the Thunder-Spurs series.

The only problem? The Thunder wouldn't give him a courtside seat.

Lil Wayne Tweet

Since Wayne's tweet, he and Oklahoma City Thunder spokesman Dan Mahoney have taken different sides to the story.

Lil Wayne demanded that his seats had to be courtside, but all of those tickets had already been sold.

Mahoney said that Wayne is welcome in Oklahoma City, but that he needs a ticket just like everybody else, according to an ESPN report.

In a text message to ESPN's Colleen Dominguez, Wayne had this to say:

They denied me the tix. Didnt want me in their arena. They also said if I do come, I can only sit behind the bench, not on the floor & that I wouldn't be able to get any special escort nor entrance. They said its the 'Oklahoma way'."

SHAME ON HOLLYWOOD: These Are The Most Racist Films Of All Time

$
0
0

Mandingo-Movie Poster-Racist

Hollywood has a reputation for being a liberal bastion of political correctness. But as these appalling movies show, it wasn't always so.

Some of them—such as 1975's Mandingo—are almost fetishistically racist.

Others are fantastic movies degraded because stereotypical characters such as Long Duk Dong from "Sixteen Candles" or Mr. Yunioshi from "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

We've compiled a list of the worst racist indiscretions made in Hollywood from the very birth of film.

And there are a lot. Warning: Some of this material may be upsetting.

21. "North" (1994) had Inuit/Eskimo racism in one ridiculous scene.

In this strange and terrible film, Elijah Wood plays North, a child prodigy who "divorces" his parents and sets off on a cross country trip to find a new family. On the way he meets cowboys, Amish people and Inuits played by Kathy Bates, Graham Greene and Abe Vigoda

The portrayal of Inuits was racist and the movie as a whole was a huge flop despite the star-studded cast and director (Rob Reiner).

20. "The Last Samurai" (2003) is a prime example of a "white savior" film.

Tom Cruise plays an ex-soldier who takes a job in Japan to help suppress a Samurai rebellion. However after he is captured by the Samurai, he learns their ways and saves them from being destroyed by the Japanese army by teaching them how to properly fight using their own techniques.

19. "Fantasia" (1940) features a half-man, half-donkey centaur who is black.

The "Pastoral Symphony" section of this classic Disney film used to feature a scene with a centaur named Sunflower who acts as a servant for the rest of the characters.

Sunflower, unlike the other centaurs who are half human-half horse, has half a donkey's body where the horse part should go. She's giddy and sloppy and was seen at one point polishing the hoofs of her white-centaur counterpart.

Disney took out the scene in versions of the film from the late 1960s. The fact that it was featured at all shouldn't be that shocking considering Disney's track record.

SURPRISE: DC Says The Green Lantern Is Now Gay

Green Lantern Is Gay

Not to be outdone by Marvel's announcement of a same-sex marriage from last week, DC Comics has now announced that one of their famous superheroes will be reintroduced to the comic book world as a gay man.

Alan Scott, aka the original Green Lantern, will now be the main superhero for the "Earth 2" series which will be released online and in comic book stores on Wednesday—and he will be out of the closet.

According to USA Today, "Series 2" writer James Robinson said the thought to make the Green Lantern a homosexual character came after DC relaunched their superhero line-up and took out their already gay character, Obsidian, who also happened to be the Green Lantern's son. When Robinson suggested the idea to his co-publisher Dan DiDio, there was no hesitation.

This is what else Robinson had to say about his newly imagined old character. "What I really want to do with this character is make the fact that he's gay to be a part of who he is and not to be the one identifying aspect of him. And have his humor and his bravery be as much or more a part of him as his sexuality."

But Alan Scott isn't the first DC superhero to come out of the closet. Batwoman has been openly gay for several years and GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) has rewarded the company for it.

And in case you're wondering, no. This is not the same Green Lantern from the 2011 movie starring Ryan Reynolds. That Green Lantern's name is Hal Jordan. So if there is a sequel, it's going to be a lot less interesting to watch.

Considering how the organization One Million Moms protested Marvel's same-sex marriage, it's only a matter of time before they take on DC.

A New Study Finds That Watching TV Damages Kids Self-Esteem

$

batman the animated series

TV may or may not rot kids' brains, as many worried parents warn. But it does, apparently, erode many youngsters' self-worth. According to a new study published in the journal Communications Research, watching TV damages the self-esteem of young girls and black boys — but actually boosts the self-esteem of young white boys. What accounts for the difference? Here's what you should know:

How was this study conducted?
Researchers from Indiana University and the University of Michigan surveyed about 400 pre-adolescent students — evenly divided between white and black subjects — over the course of a year. The students were asked to tally how much TV they watched, and then complete an 11-item questionnaire designed to measure feelings of self-worth.

What did researchers find?
After controlling for age, body image, and baseline self-esteem, the study found that exposure to more TV led to a decline in self-esteem among both white and black girls and black boys, but actually led to an increase in self-esteem among white boys. The study also found that the sheer amount of time children spend in front of the TV (seven hours a day, according to ABC News) is harmful to all kids, at least in some ways. "They're not given a chance to explore other things they're good at," says Nicole Martins, one of the study's authors.

Typically, the lifestyle of white male TV characters reflects a desirable future for impressionable white boys: "You tend to be in positions of power, you have prestigious occupations, high education, glamorous houses, a beautiful wife, with very little portrayals of how hard you worked to get there."

Why does TV only boost self-esteem for white boys?
Children who spend almost all their free time watching TV "cannot help but compare themselves to what they see on screen," says Kristen Harrison, who co-authored the study. And typically, the lifestyle of white male TV characters reflects a desirable future for impressionable white boys: "You tend to be in positions of power, you have prestigious occupations, high education, glamorous houses, a beautiful wife, with very little portrayals of how hard you worked to get there." Female characters, however, are frequently one-dimensional and sexualized, while male black characters are often portrayed as hoodlums — sending the message "that there are not lots of good things you can aspire to."

What can be done?
There are several obvious solutions, says Cassie Murdoch at Jezebel: "Throwing the TV out the window," for one, or "reshaping the entire television industry so that it represents everyone." But short of such revolutionary changes, limiting TV time and diversifying kids' recreational activities is a good start. "Too much time in front of the screen may displace real-life experiences," says Martins. Something as simple as playing ball occasionally in the backyard could do wonders to "build a child's feeling of self-worth."

REALLY? George Lucas Says He's Done Making Blockbuster Movies

george lucas

From a galaxy far, far away ... to a garage?

That's what it seems like. "Star Wars" creator George Lucas told Empire he's retiring from making blockbusters.

Instead, he wants to produce non-commercial "hobby" films in his garage.

"I'm finishing all my obligations and I'm going to retire to my garage with my saw and hammer and build hobby movies," Lucas told Empire. 'I've always wanted to make movies that were more experimental in nature, and not have to worry about them showing in movie theaters."

Hold up. Is this for real?

Lucas has played the "writer cries retire" line many a time before.

He told The New York Times "I'm retiring" in January while promoting film "Red Tails" and made hints at retirement back in 2006 after "Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith" came to theaters.

He's basically becoming the Brett Favre of film.

Currently, Lucas has multiple future projects on his IMDB page including writing for upcoming TV series "Star Wars: Underworld" and "Indiana Jones 5."

We'll believe it when Lucas all but executes order 66.

Justin Bieber Got A Concussion Last Night After Walking Into A Glass Wall—Again

Justin Bieber

At his show in Paris last night, pint-sized phenomenon Justin Bieber told TMZ that while finishing a song, he ran into a plate of glass and was knocked out cold for 15 seconds after he got offstage.

"I was performing, and I was going offstage and, basically, I'm in Paris and performing on the tallest building in Paris, and there's a glass wall behind me, but there's a railing behind the glass. And so I went to reach for the railing and I hit my head on the glass."

That injury ended up being more serious than Bieber is making it seem. The singer found out he gotten a concussion.

"And I guess me and glass windows don't really go together," the singer said.

The singer is referring to a video of him hitting the back of his head in 2010 while in a revolving door. Instead of being upset or making a big deal out of it, Bieber thanked his fans for being so supportive and laughed off the clumsiness with this funny Twitter message to the wall.

"I will see u again Glass. I will have my revenge. BIEBER vs GLASS. MGM LAS VEGAS 2013. lol. #GottaLaughAtYourself."

The L.A. Coliseum Is Embroiled In A Sex Scandal After Porn Video Shot On Grounds

USC Coliseum

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum field is home to the USC Trojan football team, it's where two Summer Olympics were held and where Pope John Paul II led Mass—and now it's also the scene of a hardcore porn movie.

The film, titled "The Gangbang Girl #32," was actually shot in 2001, but the L.A. Times has just unearthed that the film was, in fact, shot at the Coliseum—which is owned by taxpayers.

"The Commission had no record of the filming and the Commission did not authorize it," an attorney for the Coliseum Commission said in a statement.

But the company that filmed the porno flick at the historic Coliseum did actually obtain a permit for the shoot, they just didn't describe the movie as pornographic.

Oh really? Because the film only showcases 40 minutes of group sex featuring make believe cheerleaders and football players.

"A permit issued by Film L.A., which handles shoots for the city and county, listed the Coliseum's address as the location and the title of the movie as 'Guns Brandished 33.'" reports the Times. "It describes the planned scenes as shots with "models against scenery" and a "re-enactment of [football] players in practice game."

Mr.Marcus, one of the stars of the film, did a video interview with the L.A. Times, in which he so eloquently revealed, "I've made movies for about 20 years and I've done a lot of things, but that one really stands out.… I mean, who gets to have sex on the Coliseum floor?"

You can watch Mr.Marcus' entire interview and learn more about the film HERE.

The current Coliseum sex scandal comes hot off the heels of a financial corruption scandal surrounding the famed arena.

The Government's Centers For Disease Control Officially Denies The Existence Of Zombies

Zombies Walk

In response to the gruesome face-eating attack in Miami earlier this week and other incidents of cannibalism, the government's Centers for Disease Control has issued an official statement denying the existence of zombies.

According to a Huffington Post report, CDC spokesman David Daigle set the record straight. "CDC does not know of a virus or condition that would reanimate the dead (or one that would present zombie-like symptoms)."

The face-eating arrest is hardly the only recent zombie-like attack to raise eyebrows. In Canada, Luka Rocco Magnotta, a porn actor, murdered another man with an ice pick before eating the corpse. And a 21-year-old in Maryland has admitted to dismembering his roommate, before eating his heart and brain.

Elsewhere, Gawker reports that health officials and hazmat teams have been unable to identify the source of a "mysterious rash" that has broken out across parts of Florida. In one incident, 41-year-old Zachary Bird went on a rampage after being pulled over. He spit blood into a trooper's eyes and banged his head on the cop's car several times. His demeanor was described as "extremely agitated and enraged."

The CDC report should be comforting for some. The recent attacks have prompted a wave of interest in zombies and as of this writing, "zombie apocalypse" ranks as the third most popular search term on Google.

A new report from Nielsen, the TV audience ratings and measurement people, shows that the number of people who watched TV at least once per month—a pretty low bar—declined from 90 percent of the population to 83 percent last year.

Proportionately, that means TV lost 8.5 percent of its audience in 2011. As many as 17 percent of people never watch TV, the survey of 28,000 consumers in 56 countries.

That's a staggering loss of interest in a medium that in industrialized nations is regarded as a standard like electricity or hot running water.

The number of people watching video on a computer at least once per month is now higher, at 84 percent, than those watching TV.

More people watch video on computers once a day than watch TV once a day.

More people watch video on computers at least once a month than watch TV once a month.

A majority of people have broadband internet access; but only a minority own hi-def TVs. Computers are killing TVs, in other words.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES: An Afternoon On Set Of 'Fast Food Mania'

nathans jon hein fast food mania

Rollerskating at Sonic in Oklahoma City, hanging in a turbine at Chipotle in Chicago and going to the country's busiest—and most exclusive—Subway (FYI: It's located inside the Pentagon) ... all in one week.

That's what Jon Hein does as host of "Fast Food Mania."

The show, on Discovery Network's new channel Destination America (formerly Planet Green), will follow the SiriusXM radio host ("The Howard Stern Show" and "Fast Food Show") as he travels to more than 20 states to visit national chains such as Taco Bell and Wendy's to more regional places including Jet BBQ in Wichita, KS.

The series will feature ten episodes which showcase Hein at three to four different locations.

The show isn't just about fast foods, though. It's also about learning the history behind the chains.

"I really found an appreciation for what they [fast-food corporations] do and how they do it," said Hein. "I don't think people appreciate what happens to get their food ... the preparation and history that goes into that meal you're getting."

We went to a taping of the show on Coney Island where we had a blast learning about the history of Nathan's Famous restaurant chain, how to cook the sweet and crispy fries and ate a few hot dogs.

And, no, we didn't challenge Hein to a contest—but we're sure we could have given him a run for his money.

"Fast Food Mania" premieres tomorrow night, June 3, at 10 p.m. on Destination America.

By the time filming started shortly after 3:30 p.m. at Coney Island's Nathans, Jon was awake for more than 12 hours. Hein balances hosting "Fast Food Mania" with his day job at SiriusXM Radio's Howard Stern Show. Hein woke up at 4 a.m. to interview Ginnifer Goodwin and Chace Crawford later that morning.

Hein's schedule is jam-packed, but exciting. In one week, he visited Krispy Kreme in Williamsburg, N.C., Sonic in Oklahoma City, Chipotle in Chicago, Illinois and Subway in Washington, D.C. Here, the team prepares to film an alternate opening sequence for the Nathan's feature.

The filming didn't go off without a hitch. Nearby hammering and noisy seagulls held up the crew momentarily. Only after a group of men stopped working for a few minutes did the team successfully get a few quick takes of Jon filming the piece's intro.

A four-second-long video of a girl kicking herself in the face spread like wildfire last week. This week, though, it's a lengthy 18-minute animated piece that's taken the Internet by storm.

Mark Parsons thought it was about time for a man to step up and write some fan fiction about One Direction.

(For those not in the know, One Direction is a hugely popular boy band from the UK.)

Parsons, who also happens to be the lead animator for popular FX show Archertook his self-imposed challenge a step further by writing, animating, and voicing an 18-minute cartoon centered around the British-Irish boy band.
