ABC's 'Fresh off the Boat' is one of the most important shows on TV right now

0
0

Fresh Off the Boat ABCABC's new comedy "Fresh Off the Boat" features a predominately Asian-American cast telling the story of an Asian American family — a rarity in network television. Just how rare is it?

The show is the first time a major network has aired a sitcom with an Asian cast since ABC cancelled Margaret Cho's "All-American Girl" in 1995. In other words, it's about time.

"Fresh Off the Boat," which airs Tuesdays on ABC, is based on the childhood experiences of outspoken New York restaurateur and media personality Eddie Huang. Set in the mid '90s, the show follows an 11-year old Asian-American hip-hop fanatic who moves with his family from Washington D.C.'s Chinatown to the suburbs of Orlando, Florida.

As a Chinese-American who grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta during the same period, I tuned in with bated breath. I was excited because for the first time in my 22 years of watching American television there was a show telling the story of my childhood.

As "Fresh" joins ABC's diverse lineup of family sitcoms that includes "Black-ish,""Cristela," and "Modern Family," we finally have our seat at the table.

For a group of people relegated to playing the friend, the accountant, or the fry cook, to have a family full of fleshed out Asian American characters is nothing short of groundbreaking.

Fresh off the boat Eddie HuangAs far as ABC is concerned, this is a move that makes sense. The Asian American population is one of the fastest growing in numbers and in affluence. "Asians have money," Huang, who also serves as the show's narrator, recently told TV journalists at the Television Critics Association press tour. "You want their money, make things for them."

When Jeremy Lin made his improbable rise to stardom in 2012, those who cheered the loudest for and spent the most money on the basketball star from Palo Alto, California were not the billions of people in China and Taiwan, they were his fellow Asian Americans.

For people like myself, Lin's life story is much more familiar than that of previous stars like Yao Ming.

And here's what worries me. The ABC comedy could easily end up one massive cultural dumpster fire.

As likely as "Fresh Off the Boat" turns into the Asian "Wonder Years," the show could just as easily descend into the pit of mediorcity and anonymity — a fate the befalls many mid-season replacements.

Because there have been so few shows with Asian casts, the networks simply aren't equipped to handle the cultural nuances of the community. Even Huang himself wrote that he felt discomfort in the way ABC has shaped his story in a 15-page long essay published in New York Magazine.

Fresh Off the boat Although Huang eventually came to grips with the show's creative process, the essay planted some seeds of doubt in my mind. This is our first shot at a show of our own in 20 years, and if this tanks, who knows when we'll get another shot.

However, as I made my way through the series' first two episodes, my fears proved to be unfounded.

The dialogue is crisp and the comedy is edgy. For the most part, "Fresh" stays away from falling into the broad cultural stereotypes and instead focuses in on the experiences of this particular family.

And as the "Fresh Off the Boat" took on the specter of racial epithets just 20 minutes into the pilot episode, show creator Nahnatchka Khan proved she is certainly fearless.

Scene after scene, it's a pretty accurate depiction of what it can be like growing up in an Asian-American family.

There's a moment early in the pilot where Eddie, played by a charismatic Hudson Yang, feels out of place in the cafeteria with his homemade Chinese noodles while his classmates are enjoying their Lunchables. He feels like an outsider and then heads home to plead with his mother for food similar to his classmates.

In another scene, Eddie returns home to change clothes before a pickup basketball game only to be intercepted by his mother at the front door with a massive book of extracurricular homework.

Ask any Asian child and it's pretty commonplace to get handed a 1,000-page book of math problems when you're just steps away from the freedom of the playground.

Fresh off the boatAs much as the show is centered on Eddie, Constance Wu steals scene after scene. Wu's portrayal of Eddie's loving and outspoken mother Jessica is simply sublime. The script gives her plenty of room to operate, and she takes full advantage of it by unleashing one-liner after one-liner.

However, Wu's in-your-face portrayal of Jessica may also be a double edged sword. As funny as her one-liners may be, the show runs the risk of pushing the character past the point of a tough, but lovable parent straight into the realm of the stereotypical tiger mom.

Randall Park, fresh off of his role as Kim Jong Un in "The Interview," plays Eddie's father Louis who serves as the perfect foil for Wu's no-nonsense Jessica.

Ultimately, "Fresh off the Boat" is about the trials and tribulations of fitting in at home and in society.

For Eddie, the struggle is as much about being an Asian kid in American society as it is about being an American kid in a Chinese household.  It's a cultural tug-of-war that's a hallmark of the immigrant experience in general and not just for Asian Americans.

In fact, the comedy derived from this type of cultural interaction has been the heart of countless tv shows of the years. "Fresh Off the Boat" finally allows viewers to experience this comedy from a new and different perspective — one that 18 million Asian Americans should find refreshingly familiar.

"Fresh off the Boat" airs Tuesdays on ABC at 8:00 p.m.

Could Jon Stewart replace Brian Williams?

0
0

AP404124197742

Since the announcement of anchor Brian Williams' suspension from "NBC Nightly News" and Jon Stewart's departure from "The Daily Show" came simultaneously Tuesday night, media observers are floating a novel idea: Why not have the comedian take over Williams' role at NBC?

Stewart revealed his plans to leave Comedy Central's satirical newscast just before NBC announced Williams would be suspended for six months due to false claims he made about time he spent in Iraq.

And since many experts believe Williams will never return to his gig, people are speculating that Stewart could be in line to replace him.

"Please raise your hand if you want Jon Stewart to replace Brian Williams at NBC?" The New York Times' labor reporter Steven Greenberg wrote on Twitter.

"As crazy as the 'NBC Nightly News' with Jon Stewart may sound, the timing of Stewart's announcement and the length of Brian Williams' suspension is oddly perfect for exactly that to happen," mused Daily News columnist David Hinkley.

The Washington Post's Terrence McCoy also noted the switch could "make sense."

Here are some reasons NBC might consider Stewart:

1. The Contract Timing Seems Perfect

NBC probably won't be replacing Williams immediately: If they had plans to do so, why would the company's Tuesday statement suggest the anchor could return to his post in six months? Instead, the network likely bought itself some time to figure out how to chart the best course forward.

And Stewart's contract with Comedy Central expires later this year, right around the time NBC will need to reveal its permanent solution.

"We're still working out the details," Stewart said Tuesday of when he'll leave his show. "I'm up in September. It might be around then. It might be December. It might be July."

2. Stewart Is Interested in More Serious Topics

Stewart isn't all laughs. He just finished a documentary, "Rosewater," that chronicled human rights activist Maziar Bahari's incarceration in Iran.

And despite the comedic nature of his show, Stewart developed a reputation as a reliable news source. In fact, a 2008 New York Times article asked, "Is Jon Stewart the Most Trusted Man in America?" This is important for NBC in the aftermath of Williams' scandal, in which he is accused of repeatedly fabricating stories.

"Stewart has become as much a serious media man as anything else," the Washington Post declared Wednesday. "And most Americans agree. In 2008, Pew Research took a poll, asking which journalist they most admired. Stewart finished fourth. ... Another journalist finished right ahead of Stewart in the poll. It was Williams."

3. NBC Was Already Interested in Having Stewart Cover Serious Topics

According to New York magazine's Gabriel Sherman, NBC attempted to recruit Stewart last year to host its flagship Sunday news program, "Meet the Press." Sherman said the story was based on three senior television sources with inside knowledge of the proposal and that the network was willing to give Stewart almost "anything." Stewart later confirmed the report, but downplayed NBC's interest.

"NBC went to Jon Stewart for 'Meet The Press' right? Imagine if they try to get him again to replace Williams," Business Insider's own Hunter Walker speculated on Twitter last Friday. "Massive ratings booster."

AP293449660785

However, there are a lot of reasons NBC may not be remotely interested in considering Stewart as well:

1. A Comedian Might Be a Bad Fit

An executive at another network told Business Insider that Stewart's funnyman reputation is not ideal for NBC as it looks to regain the American public's trust.

"I don't think it's even in the realm of possibility because I think he's going to go off and do movies and other things," the executive said. "If you are suspending a guy for inaccuracies and telling a story that he was involved in in the 'Nightly News,' you don't then get somebody who has no news background."

Stewart himself suggested it would have been "weird" for him to host "Meet the Press" because of his entertainment background.

"I'm sure part of them was thinking, 'Why don't we just make it a variety show?'" Stewart told Rolling Stone last year. "News and entertainment have melded in a way. But they would be overcompensating on the entertainment side.

2. Stewart Might Be Too Partisan

The "Daily Show" host has made no secret of his liberal leanings over the years and he might not fit the traditionally nonpartisan news anchor role. And with a desire to build on the roughly 10 million viewers "NBC Nightly News" already gets, Stewart would likely need to appeal to a broader, more centrist audience than his show has.

Indeed, conservative critics slammed NBC for considering Stewart for "Meet the Press" when details of the offer leaked last October.

"Considering the state of MSNBC, it's probably not surprise that NBC has a flexible definition of journalism," a NewsBusters blogger wrote at the time.

3. NBC Might Have Someone Else in Mind

It's possible the network already knows whom they want to replace Williams — possibly Lester Holt, who is filling in for Williams during his suspension, or one of "The Today Show" hosts, Matt Lauer or Savannah Guthrie.

Politico's Dylan Byers speculated that Williams' job might be Holt's to lose because NBC executives will be able to see if he can sustain the news program's ratings.

"Brian Williams probably isn't coming back," Byers wrote. "Consider the next six months an audition for Lester Holt."

Sports Illustrated swimsuit models Hannah Davis, Chrissy Teigen, and Nina Agdal star in a new DirecTV ad campaign that is generating just as much backlash as the SI cover.

Model Hannah Davis, below, appears next to the text "I'm Hannah Davis and I have DirecTV."

"People will look at that and think, 'That is not okay. We can’t demean the working class,'" body image expert, Dr. Robyn Silverman, told ABC News.

"The problem with these ads is that they have nothing to do with DirecTV, they are guilting us," said Stephen Galloway, editor at The Hollywood Reporter.

DirecTV is standing by their ads, telling ABC News: "The ads were specifically created to run in the 2015 Sport’s Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and were meant to work within the context of the editorial of the magazine, which is beautiful women in swimsuits. The intention of the ads was to show a fun, tongue-in-cheek example of how DIRECTV is superior to cable."

Teigen, too, is standing by her involvement with the campaign.

"We had fun. We had a good time. We didn't mean to be demeaning or degrading or hurt anybody's feelings," Teigen said. "It is a funny ad; it's supposed to be funny, take it for what it is."

In response to the recent backlash, the model posted the below to her Instagram account with the caption: "I'm Chrissy Teigen and I really do have @direcTV thank effing god."

Neil deGrasse Tyson tried to steal Conan's staff while promoting his new 'Star Talk' show

Famed astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium Neil deGrasse Tyson tried to steal some of Conan's top talent during his appearance on "Conan" February 10 — after dropping some moon knowledge.

Tyson is getting his own late night show called "Star Talk" on the National Geographic Channel starting in April, and he's hiring.

"Who would go work on a show like that?" Conan asked.

The moon that hangs in the backdrop of Conan's set chimed in that it would want to work on Tyson's show.

Conan pleaded with the moon to stay by proving how well he knows the moon and claiming their history should be enough to keep the moon on his show.

"You sometimes change shape, you only come out at night, and you're responsible for teen wolf," Conan said.

Then Tyson appeared to clear up Conan's moon misconceptions and was greeted with a thunderous applause.

neil appears

"The moon changes shape continuously during the monthly orbit around the Earth, and while it does this it's visible in the day time just as often as it is at night," Tyson said. "And only a lunatic would blame teen wolf on the moon."

Conan forbid Tyson from taking the moon.

So Tyson offered Conan's right hand man Andy a job on his show. And — as is fitting from the host of "Cosmos: A Spacetimes Odyssey" — he launched into a speech touting the wonders of the universe and of Andy himself.

"Andy may be small in time and space, but he is a universe unto himself, comprised of atoms whose origins can be traced back to the stars that exploded billions of years ago," Tyson said.

Andy looked a little freaked out at first:

conan andy"Andy, come with me," Tyson said.

Andy couldn't resist Tyson's charm and left the set with him:

This new vampire mockumentary is a must-see for 'Flight of the Conchords' fans

what we do in shadows screen 2 LIGHTImagine "This Is Spinal Tap," but instead of rock musicians, the subjects were vampires.

That's exactly what we get with "What We Do In The Shadows," a faux-documentary from New Zealeand co-written, co-directed and starring Jemaine Clement, better known as one-half of the comedy/folk duo "Flight of the Conchords."

The premise is simple — a documentary camera crew follows around a group of flatmates/vampires in their natural habitat and showcases their day-to-day life, which isn't all drinking blood and sleeping in coffins.  It's a lot like "The Office" ... if it were set in New Zealand and starred vampires.

what we do in shadows screen 1 LIGHT"Shadows" pokes fun at vampires themselves by making careful references to the films that paved the way. Everything from the classic "Nosferatu," to more modern vampire films like the "Twilight" series and even Francis Ford Coppola's "Dracula" from the early 90s are alluded to, among many others.

The humor is fairly dry and deadpan, often featuring normally mundane roommate situations like who's going to do the dishes suddenly become hysterically funny when vampires hundreds of years old are bickering about it.

what we do in shadows screen 3LIGHT"What We Do In The Shadows" arrives in a limited amount of theaters this weekend with little fanfare, which is a real shame considering I laughed harder during this film than any other mainstream comedy in recent memory.

The chemistry between the film's writers/directors/stars Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi is fantastic, and every character has their high moments.

If you want to watch the movie on the big screen but don't live in New York or LA, you can donate to the film's KickStarter campaign and help support its release in the states.

The film is a must-see for fans of Christopher Guest films, "Flight of the Conchords," horror, or anybody who just needs a good laugh.

How getting fired from an ice cream shop changed 'Shark Tank' investor Kevin O'Leary's life

0
0

kevin o'leary

Like many teenagers, Kevin O'Leary got one of his first paying gigs working in a mall.

But it wasn't just any job. The brief stint as an ice cream scooper changed O'Leary's life. The "Shark Tank" investor says the day his boss fired him was the moment he realized he wanted to be an entrepreneur.

As a high-school student in Ottawa, Canada, O'Leary took a job at Magoo's Ice Cream Parlour at a mall where girls from his class would hang out. It wasn't a cool job by any means, but he hoped it could get him a chance to work his magic.

The first day went by easily enough, but the next day didn't end so smoothly.

"It was the end of the day of my second day of work, and the woman who owned the ice cream parlor said to me, 'Listen, before you go, scrape all the gum up between the tiles,'" O'Leary tells Business Insider.

He saw two problems with that:

1. It was a Mexican tile floor, the kind that would require some tough maneuvering on his hands and knees.

2. He'd have to do that in front of the cute girl who worked at the shoe store across from him, risking humiliation among her and her friends.

"I said, 'No, I'm not going to do that. You hired me to be an ice cream scooper,'" O'Leary recalls. "She said, 'I hired you for whatever I want. You work for me. Scrape the gum or you're fired.' And I said, 'I'm not doing it,' and so she fired me."

He says he didn't really understand the full weight of what it meant to be fired. He was shocked and embarrassed.

"I realized then that when you work for somebody else, you're basically their slave," he says. "From that day on I swore I'd never work for anyone else. That was the beginning of my journey."

O'Leary writes on LinkedIn that he got home with "tears of hot rage stinging my cheeks." He told his stepfather that he'd never work for anyone again, to which his stepdad replied, "Even if you're self-employed, you'll be serving someone," explaining that business owners have obligations to their customers and shareholders.

O'Leary writes that his stepfather's lesson became clear years later, but he was convinced that he would one day become an entrepreneur.

He went back to the mall in 2009 to see if his old boss was still around. He wanted to thank her.

"I never did find her — and when I visited the mall I realized I could buy it today if I wanted and bulldoze it — but she was a very important part of my decision-making for the rest of life," he tells us.

"That's how it started. I'll never forget it."

In honor of the “Deadpool” movie coming out one year from today, Ryan Reynolds has shared the first photo of himself on set with the popular Marvel antihero.

Reynolds says the costume below is a prototype.

For those who are unfamiliar with the character, “Deadpool” is comic book character who knows he’s a comic book character. This leads to him breaking the fourth wall inside comics. There are separate comic bubbles differentiating where he’ll talk out loud, to himself, and to the audience.

Reynolds has been trying to get a “Deadpool” movie made since he played the character in 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” film.

He even went so far as to shoot test footage for a “Deadpool” movie that ended up going viral.

Here’s how the costume should look by the time it’s done. “Deadpool” is set for a February 12, 2016 release.
