Is Ashton Kutcher's New Popchips Ad Racist?

$
0
0

The New York Times reported that Ashton Kutcher "Shows Many Faces" in Popchips' $1.5 million ad campaign. It failed to mention that one of those faces is in the equivalent of blackface.

Kutcher plays four different men in a fake video dating commercial: a Bruno-like fashion guru named Darl, a Russel Brand-esque hippie named Nigel, Swordish the biker, and finally Raj, an Indian in brown facepaint who says, "I was in a milking contest and I won it." The spot was made by ad agency Zambesi.

While Kim Kardashian, Jillian Michaels, Patti Stranger, and other celebrities are singing the ad's praises, others are calling it racist. Rapper Das Racist has tweeted, "Hey , what's with the racist brown face video you talentless, pretending to care about sex trafficking piece of shit?"

Watch the video below and let us know what you think.

Fox News Anchor Shep Smith Just Went On An EPIC Rant About The GOP Primary

$

Fox News anchor Shep Smith basically summed up the Republican primary this afternoon, offering a hilarious critique of Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, and the bizarre alternate universe that they appear to be living in.

After reading a statement from Romney that referred to the Gingrichs as "friends," Smith gave this response:

"Politics is weird. And creepy. And now I know lacks even the loosest attachment to anything like reality."

Watch the clip below.

Smith's remarks concluded an epic diatribe against Gingrich, after the former House Speaker announced he is suspending his campaign with a bizarre and characteristically ponderous speech that lasted for a full 23 minutes and included lines like "I am not totally certain I will get to the moon colony."

"Wow. I'm exhausted," Smith said when Gingrich finished. "I feel like I've been transported from another world. What just happened?"

“I remember, so before he announced for the presidency I saw him in the green room right back over here,” Smith said later. “He said, ‘Shep, I’m going to have the biggest online event ever. I’m going to announce this in multiple cities all across the country.’ I’m like, I thought then he was delusional and now I’m sure.”

JOURNALISM PROFESSOR ACCEPTS "THE BUSINESS INSIDER CHALLENGE!"

Dan Reimold

Great news, folks!

A few days ago, a journalism professor at the University of Tampa, Dan Reimold, advised his students not to admire the success of our Deputy Editor, Joe Weisenthal, who was named the best finance journalist of 2011 and recently profiled in the New York Times.

Joe Weisenthal, the professor warned, works too hard.

Joe Weisenthal also produces journalism that, in the professor's eyes, journalism students should not strive to produce (This advice came despite the fact that our readers LOVE Joe Weisenthal's journalism: He's one of our most popular writers month after month.)

Rather, Professor Dan Reimold seemed to be suggesting, journalism students should strive to produce long magazine articles, like those in the New Yorker or those written by the famous and amazing print-journalism war-correspondent Anthony Shadid.

Well, we love the New Yorker and Anthony Shadid, too. And we also produce a lot of long-form journalism ourselves. So if Professor Reimold's students want to write long magazine articles or be war correspondents for print newspapers, we wholeheartedly endorse both as models.

But we also suggested that Professor Reimold was not understanding or acknowledging that digital journalism is very different from magazine journalism--because digital is a different medium. And we explained that, contrary to the professor's dismissive view, what Joe Weisenthal and our other very talented digital journalists do is much harder than the professor seems to think (There's real craft here. And art. And style. And voice. And storytelling. And smarts. And all the things that go into great journalism in other media, albeit applied differently).

And we suggested that, if Professor Reimold were to sit in Joe Weisenthal's chair for a day, he would find it far more difficult to do what Joe Weisenthal does than he thought.

Well, we are now thrilled to report that...

Professor Reimold has accepted that challenge!!!

He's coming to New York to write for us for a day!

We haven't worked out the details yet--in fact, we haven't even talked to him about it yet--but we already have his desk ready.

(We would respectfully suggest that Professor Reimold might want to work here for more than a day, because it will take that long just to get comfortable with the publishing system, images, etc. But we look forward to having him here for as long as he'll stay,)

And, of course, we're going to document the whole thing. On video!  This could be amazing reality TV.  HIDEBOUND JOURNALISM PROFESSOR VENTURES INTO INNOVATIVE DIGITAL NEWSROOM!!!

(Okay, it may not be a nationwide blockbuster. And we'll have to think of a better title. But you get the idea.)

Anyway, we're looking forward to this.

Professor Dan Reimold, your desk is waiting!

WHOA: Here's What TV's First Prime-Time Schedule Looked Like In 1946

$
0
0

Today, when we turn on the TV and channel surf, our eyes scan over a very bloated television guide.

With a barrage of reality series, dramas and films easily accessible at our fingertips, it's difficult to imagine a time when dead air existed.

Here's the schedule for the first prime-time fall schedule for each of the four networks in 1946 — ABC (marked by A), CBS (C), NBC (N) and the failed DuMont (D).

The block gives a peek at early television which consisted of variety series, Western films, quiz shows and early educational programming. It's also relatively barren.

Take a look at the schedule below:

1946 primetime television schedule

Not familiar with the shows above? Here are some of series that ran during television's early days:

Geographically Speaking (NBC)
– This travelogue series included travel films narrated by hostess Carveth Wells. The show lasted for slightly more than a month on NBC's Sunday night block.

Face to Face (NBC) — The early "Pyramid-like" quiz show consisted of one man trying to draw another man hidden from view based off of clues fed to him from another person.

Television Screen Magazine (NBC) — This was an early variety show. An equal parallel today would be "60 Minutes."

Serving Through Science (DuMont) — Encyclopedia Britannica short films were discussed by host Dr. Guthrie McClintock in the show that lasted for less than a year. Though educational, viewers claimed the series boring.

You Are An Artist (NBC) —Jon Gnagy hosted a 15-minute show where he guided viewers through art lessons and analyzed famous works from the Museum of Modern Art.

Cash and Carry (DuMont) — Imagine an early version of "Supermarket Sweep" or "The Price is Right" and you have the gist of this supermarket quiz show. The show's emcee, Dennis James, went on to host "The Price is Right."

Play the Game (DuMont) – The early charade game show ran on DuMont for 13 weeks before heading over to ABC in 1948.

I Love To Eat (NBC) — Author James Beard hosted the first network cooking show, paving the way for shows including "Rachel Ray" and reality TV's "MasterChef."

The World In Your Home (NBC) — There's little known about the 15-minute documentary-type series from NBC. From the title, it appears likely to have been another early news magazine.

Hour Glass (NBC) — Long before SNL, "Hour Glass" was the first broadcast variety show on broadcast television.

Let's Rhumba (NBC) — Before "Dancing with the Stars" there was this dance instruction program that ran for slightly more than two months.

Robert Pattinson Plays A Hedge Funder Who Has A Hard Time Getting A Haircut In The Movie 'Cosmopolis'

$

In the movie 'Cosmopolis,' Twilight star Robert Pattinson sheds his pretty boy vampire role to become a 28-year-old billionaire hedge fund manager.

The movie follows Pattinson's character as he journeys across New York City to his father's old barber so he can get a haircut. While he travels to his destination in his stretch limo, Pattinson tracks the results of his bet on the yuan, is visited by his doctors, analysts and model lady friends, and also happens to drive through a protest (Occupy Wall Street much?). Pattinson's character eventually pieces the day's chaotic events together to realize that he is about to be assassinated, according to the film's website.

So although the movie takes place in an unfamiliar New York sometime in the future, it seems Wall Street cliches appear to be just the same.

The film also stars Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti and Samantha Morton. It was directed and written by David Cronenberg, and is based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Don DeLillo.

The movie just premiered at Cannes to very mixed reviews, according to FINS. It's currently playing in theaters across Europe, so we'll be keeping a look out on when the movie comes to New York. Judging from the trailer, the movie has some dark and psychedelic undertones. Watch it below—

TIME FOR IPO-OVERHAUL: How Morgan Stanley Clients Got Screwed On Facebook -- And How We Can Fix The System

$
0

Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman is trying to change the perception that Morgan Stanley bungled the Facebook IPO.

He'll be on CNBC later today.

And Gorman does have several perfectly reasonable points to make, starting with the fact that Morgan Stanley got a great price for the stock of its client, Facebook, and that Morgan Stanley then gave every investor client who wanted to flip the stock the first day a chance to lock in a gain and get out.

(Facebook stock traded above the IPO price for five hours when it went public.)

In other words, Morgan Stanley helped raise $16 billion for its client and then ensured that everyone who bought the stock could come out ahead.

That's the very definition of doing an excellent job, and Morgan Stanley should be proud of that.

Alas, Morgan Stanley also played a role in hosing some Facebook investors. Specifically, Morgan Stanley did not tell smaller investors what it told big investors, which was that Facebook was having a lousy quarter. Only a few days before the IPO, Facebook called Morgan Stanley's research analyst and told him to cut his earnings estimates. Morgan Stanley immediately relayed this information to its big institutional investor clients, but didn't tell its financial advisors or smaller clients.

Thus, any smaller client who held Facebook for more than a day thinking everything was hunky dory got screwed.

What James Gorman will undoubtedly say is that Morgan Stanley followed the normal IPO procedures and rules, which it may well have. But, unfortunately, the rules themselves are grossly unfair.

(And I think it's fair to ask Mr. Gorman why Morgan Stanley did not see the unfairness of not sharing this critical information with its smaller clients and decide to change its normal procedures to do so.)

Reuters was kind enough to ask me to stop by to talk about this issue--and how to fix it--with editor Rob Cox. Video below.

These Sinister Theories Will Change How You Feel About Your Favorite Childhood Characters

Spongebob

Many of us are happy to believe that our favorite childhood cartoons, movies and books are totally innocent.

But a recent Reddit thread explored the darker side of cartoons including Spongebob Squarepants, Ed Edd and Eddie, and Rugrats.

The theories are compelling—and could change the way you view your favorite characters forever.

The Rugrats' Angelica is the only one who can talk to the babies because they are a figment of her imagination.

"She is spoiled, sad and lonely, because her mother is constantly working and has no time for her.

So how did it come about that Angelica would have to imagine these babies? Tommy died soon after child birth, a fact reflected by Stu never leaving the basement, inventing toys that his son will never play with. Chuckie died in the car crash along with his Mum, also reflected in the actions of his father; the crash has made him a pathetic nervous wreck most of the time.

Most interesting is Phil and Lil. There never where any twins, there was just one baby. However this baby was a still born, and Angelica never knew the sex of the still born, so she invented twins of different genders."

In the Haunted Mansion at Disney theme parks, riders commit suicide during the course of the ride and become ghosts..

"At the beginning of the ride the ghost host (the narrator) says the only way to escape the mansion is to die, and he shows that he hanged himself. Near the end of the ride there's a moment where the ride vehicle turns around backwards and you go off a balcony, which according to this theory represents you jumping to your death.

Before this part of the ride the ghosts are all trying to scare you, but afterwards they sing excitedly and invite you to party with them. The only human character in the ride, a groundskeeper, appears after the balcony drop. He faces toward the riders and seems terrified of you."

The original Scooby Doo series is set after a horrible economic depression.

"Everything is abandoned and falling apart, and all of the villains are people who would normally be really respected (professors, museum curators, celebrities) who have fallen into hard times just like everyone else. How many times have the gang helped someone NOT go out of business?"

Rebecca Black Mexican Election

Fourteen-year-old YouTube "star" Rebecca Black has thrown her support behind the frontrunner in Mexico's presidential election, Enrique Peña Nieto of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI).

In a video posted online this week, Black, accompanied by her Spanish-speaking mother, showed up in Morelos, Mexico, and publicly endorsed Peña Nieto, the current frontrunner in the Mexican race for president.

Speaking  through a translator, Black explains that even though she may just be 14, it's important for youth to understand the issues so they are prepared when they reach voting age. "Peña Nieto is going to do a fantastic job," she said.

Critics observe that Black's uncle is city council member in Morelos, and a member of the PRI. In Spanish, entertainment reporter Astrid Capon called it "a joke in bad taste from the PRI" and "almost offensive."

Former child actor, Jerry Supiran, of 1980s "Small Wonder" is broke and homeless, blaming his current misfortune on a stripper, The New York Post reports.

“When I was 18, I dated a stripper and she took what was left of my trust fund — then one of my advisers stole a half-million dollars from me,” Supiran said.

39-year-old Supiran played the adolescent Jamie Lawson on "Small Wonder." The show revolved around Jamie's robotic 10-year-old sister Vicki (standing for Voice Input Child Identicon) created by his research engineer father, Ted

Supiran became homeless after losing his most recent position as a waiter.

“I’ve worked at different steakhouses for the last 15 years,” he said. “But two years ago, I was laid off from a restaurant in Henderson, Nev., due to the economy. I haven’t been able to find a job since.”

Since then, Supiran moved back to California where his brother lives, sleeping at a homeless shelter he volunteers at, or under a local bridge.

Bruce Springsteen Went On An Anti-Banker Rant At His Massive Concert in Berlin

Bruce Springsteen Angry (AP)

BERLIN (Reuters) - Rocker Bruce Springsteen touched on a nerve of widespread discontent with the financiers and bankers at a Berlin concert on Wednesday, railing against them as "greedy thieves" and "robber barons."

Springsteen, a singer-songwriter dubbed "The Boss" who has long championed populist causes, played to a sold-out crowd at Berlin's Olympic Stadium, singing from his album "Wrecking Ball" and speaking about tough economic times that have put people out of work worldwide and led to debt crises in Greece and other countries.

"In America, a lot of people have lost their jobs," said Springsteen, 62, who performed for three hours to some 58,000 fans in the packed stadium that hosted the 1936 Olympics and the 2006 World Cup final.

"But also in Europe and in Berlin, times are tough," he added, speaking in fluent German. "This song is for all those who are struggling." He then introduced "Jack of All Trades", a withering attack on bankers that includes the lyrics: "The banker man grows fat, working man grows thin."

Europe has been especially hard hit since 2008's financial meltdown that sparked an enduring sovereign debt crisis. Unemployment on the continent has risen to levels not seen since the 1990s.

Springsteen's "Wrecking Ball" tour began on May 13 in Spain, which is struggling with its crushing debt load, and it runs for 2-1/2 months with 33 stops in 15 countries before concluding on July 31 in Helsinki.

'FAT AND EASY ON BANKER'S HILL'

Berlin, largely a working class city, has been a special place for Springsteen since his July 1988 concert behind the old Iron Curtain in East Berlin.

Watched by 160,000 people, or about 1 percent of then Communist East Germany's population, it was the biggest rock show in East German history, and The Boss boldly spoke out against the "barriers" keeping East Germans in their portion of the city.

Some historians have said the concert fed into a movement gaining moment at the time that contributed to the tearing down of the Berlin Wall 16 months later in November 1989.

"Once in a while you play a place, a show that ends up staying inside of you, living with you for the rest of your life," he told the crowd on Wednesday after being handed a poster from a fan thanking him for the 1988 concert. "East Berlin in 1988 was certainly one of them."

Even though Germany has managed to come through the current financial crisis in fairly good shape, Berlin itself is struggling with a double-digit unemployment rate, low wages and a high poverty. And some of the lyrics in Springsteen's "Wrecking Ball" album clearly struck a chord with the crowd.

In "Shackled and Drawn", Springsteen sings about "Gambling man rolls the dice, working man pays the bill. It's still fat and easy up on banker's hill. Up on banker's hill the party's going strong, down here below we're shackled and drawn."

With "Easy Money", Springsteen rips into the "fat cats" who will "just think it's funny ... when you're whole world comes tumbling down." In "Death to My hometown", Springsteen assails the "greedy thieves and robber barons" who "destroyed our families, factories and they took our homes." In the song "Wrecking Ball", he sings: "Hold tight to your anger."

"The financial world has caused us all a lot of our problems and Springsteen has always been a critical spirit - that's what I like about him," said Kathleen Wapp, a 42-year-old doctor's assistant from Wolfsburg who was at the show. "I like the way he's not afraid to put a critical light on the key issues."

"I think it's great the way he's taking on the banking industry - he's got it dead right," said Matthias Beck, 46, a carpenter from Leipzig. "There's hardly anything good about banks. They take advantage of the little people, and it's always hard to find someone who'll take responsibility when it all goes wrong."

Legendary author Stephen King will be releasing a new book next June – but fans will have to get it in paper format only.

King was on the forefront of the e-book revolution before now, releasing one of his titles, “Riding the Bullet,” in electronic format in 2000 before that was the norm.

“I also loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid,” the author said in a statement about his decision to go paper-only for the new title, which will be called “Joyland. “And for that reason, we're going to hold off on e-publishing this one for the time being.”

“Joyland” will follow a college student named Devin Jones who works at a carnival in North Carolina during the 1970s and learns of a past crime and a child whose time may be running out.

The book will be published through Hard Case Crime, an imprint under the umbrella of Titan Books.

Here's another entertaining clip from the D conference.

Hollywood super agent Ari Emanuel was blaming Verizon, AT&T, and Google for allowing Hollywood's content to be pirated.

Topolsky, during the Q&A, said that didn't make any sense. He said it was like seeing your house was robbed then blaming the road that let the criminals drive up to it. A pretty good analogy, we think.

But then Emmanuel blew up Topolsky and his argument saying that Google can prevent people from finding child porn, so it should be able to prevent people from finding Game of Thrones as an illegal download.

Topolsky didn't have much of a response.

You can see the exchange at the 16:50 mark in this video. (And if this video doesn't play, head over to AllThingsD to see it.)

CHANGES IN EMMY FORMAT: Two Categories Are Being Combined

$

emmy

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences have announced that they are combining lead and supporting actor and actress categories for the miniseries/TV movie section of the Emmy awards, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The report states that the new categories will be called "outstanding actor in a miniseries or movie" and "outstanding actress in a miniseries or movie" and they will be expanded to six nominees a piece.

Until this past year, the categories had five nominees each.

This should raise some conflict among TV studios that will now have less of an opportunity to promote actors in their TV films and shows.

Popular series like "Downton Abbey" and critically acclaimed, made-for-TV films on HBO will likely be the most affected by the news.

Zhang Ziyi Threatens To Sue Over Ridiculous Chinese Politician Sex Scandal Claims

Zhang Ziyi

"Memoirs of a Geisha" actress Zhang Ziyi isn't happy at all over a story claiming the star was paid millions to participate in a sexual relationship with Chinese politician Bo Xilai.

During an appearance at the 12 Chinese Film Media Awards, the actress said the entire allegation is nothing more than fabrication.

"This 'news' is a complete lie. Both within the article and between the lines, there were contemptuous lies ... I read a lot of comments from people who don't know the truth and they think this film industry is like that [rife with unsavory dealings]. This time, these [irresponsible reports] have not only hurt me, but maligned the film industry. And worse of all, they [some media outlets] made use of such hot topics to fool the public."

Now, the 32-year-old actress is threatening to sue a sling of news outlets including a local Hong Kong paper where her publicist originally learned of the allegations.

"We read this outrageous report in the Apple Daily," Ziyi's publicist said in a statement to TodayOnline. "It sent stone-cold chills down our spines and has left us with a feeling of deep sadness."

The report followed and repeated claims made earlier on Boxun.com, a Chinese-language site housed in the U.S.

Boxun claimed Zhang and Xilai met in 2007 through the latter's billionaire friend Xu Ming. The site also claimed the actress gained $100 million from flings with high-ranking government officials dating back ten years.

The Chinese actress is now the subject to government investigations. Her lawyer has since posted a letter to the Apple Daily on both Ziyi's blog and and site Sina Weibo demanding the paper retract the claims and issue an apology to the actress.

"Friends have advised us to release a short statement and not take this seriously," Ziyi's publicist said. "The more you argue, the more you will stir up. It would be better to step aside until people lose interest and the lies disappear. The innocent will always be innocent."

Zhang Ziyi currently stars in "Dangerous Liaisons" which premiered last week at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Bourne Legacy-Jeremy Renner

If you weren't enthused about the idea of having a new Jason Bourne movie without Jason Bourne, we dare you not to be excited after this new trailer.

This new, full sneak peek gives us a big look at the new story and links Jason Bourne to our new hero Aaron Cross, played by Jeremy Renner

Oscar nominee Rachel Weisz also gets some screen time in the trailer as the scientist who experimented on Aaron Cross and later flees with him as they search for answers into why all the best agents around the world are mysteriously being killed off. Apparently it all has to do with Jason Bourne and Cross isn't making things easier for the government (see how everything connects?) And the action sequences! Considering we've all now seen Renner as Hawkeye from "The Avengers," it's easier to swallow all the butt-kicking he does in this two-and-a-half minute trailer.

Edward Norton, Albert Finney, Joan Allen and David Stratharin also all make appearances as officials of the Treadstone and Outcome agencies. The film releases August 3rd. Who's ready to see the new film now?

It turns out the ABC reality show has quite an extensive budget to spend on dressing this season's "Bachelorette," Emily Maynard.

So far, Maynard has worn a $40,000 nude Randi Rahm gown and Christian Louboutin Straratata heels with a price tag of $1,045 on the reality show.
