John Mayer Will Now Tell You The Best Vintage Rolex For Your Buck

john mayer

Watch blog HODINKEE has a new contributor who knows what it's like to have the world's eyes on his wrist: John Mayer.

Yes, that John Mayer. Apparently he's a huge watch aficionado, and he's got some sharp opinions when it comes to wristwear.

Here's how he explains the difference between a regular consumer and a watch collector:

Collecting watches is one of the last bastions of required reading, so to speak. The more you know, the better you can collect, and you can’t just get there with a Google search. You get there by meeting new people, by hearing their stories.  You have to interact.  My passion for watches has taken me away from the loneliness of hotel rooms, far off the beaten path of tourist maps into the outskirts of Tokyo and into the convention halls of Las Vegas. The difference between a collector and a consumer is knowing the details, and I live for the details.

Today he's blogging about the best vintage Rolexes you can buy for $8,000 or less, something he says he gets asked about all time.

You can check out his picks over at HODINKEE.

These are the most expensive watches you can buy right now >

JAMIE ANNE ALLMANJamie Anne Allman plays Terry Marek on AMC's "The Killing"—but you may recognize the pretty brunette actress from her countless side roles on shows such as "The Shield," "Six Feet Under," "Saving Grace," "The Closer," and "Monk," not to mention 2004's "The Notebook."

Her husband of six years, Marshall Allman, plays Tommy Micken on "True Blood" and previously played LJ Burrows on "Prison Break."

While you can currently catch Jamie every Sunday in season two of "The Killing," she also shared with us her intimate photos from the couple's recent Portland, Oregon getaway—where they were celebrating their birthdays (which are one day apart!) and the premiere of Marshall's latest film, "Blue Like Jazz."

Feeling confident in the car rapping to Big K.R.I.T on the way to Portland to visit my hubs [Marshall Allman] for our birthdays and get ready for the "Blue Like Jazz" premiere! Gotta pay the price!

Finally arrived. Cozying up with some Veggie Chili at Doug Fir Lounge in Portland.

Hiking around Multnomah Falls. Beautiful scenery!

12 Attempts To Bribe Celebrities For Charitable Causes

back-to-the-future

Want to contribute to a worthy cause and get your favorite celebrity to do something awesome and/or ridiculous? That’s the idea behind Charity Bribes.

Anyone can post something awesome or bizarre for a specific celebrity to do. These ideas go on a master list, where the good people of the Internet vote for their favorites. Currently on the leader board“Morgan Freeman to spend an afternoon narrating user-submitted animal videos.”

The activity with the most votes when the current bribe expires (every 30 days) is the next one to be featured. People then pledge money to get the celeb to do the aforementioned awesome thing. If the celeb doesn’t take the bribe, no one has to give the money they pledged. If the celebrity follows through, the predetermined charity gets the cash that was raised.

Larry David fans recently pledged more than $10,000 in an attempt to get LD on Twitter. It doesn’t appear to have worked, but it was their first effort. I have a good feeling about the current bribe, which happens to be #1 on our list.

Let us know if you post a bribe. Anyone want to see Mangesh and Will arm wrestle? Want Ransom to give your town the Strange Geographies treatment?

Check out 12 celebrity bribes for charitable causes>

Leonardo DiCaprio Will Star As A Hard-Partying, Drug Abusing Stockbroker In 'The Wolf Of Wall Street' Movie

leonardo dicaprio

It's official! Leonardo DiCaprio will star in the "Wolf of Wall Street" -- a movie adaptation of Jordan Belfort's best-selling memoir directed by Martin Scorsese, Deadline reports.

From the press release.  [via Deadline]

Leonardo DiCaprio will star as Jordan Belfort – the ‘Wolf of Wall Street.’

Terence Winter (“The Sopranos,” “Boardwalk Empire”) adapted the screenplay, which chronicles Belfort’s dramatic rise and fall on Wall Street, along with his hard-partying lifestyle and tumultuous personal life, which included drug and alcohol addiction.

“Everything about this film plays to Martin Scorsese’s genius and visionary storytelling, said Riza Aziz. “At its heart, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ is about the rise of new ‘modern’ gangsters in New York. Wall Street gangsters that redefined excess, greed and arrogance. We’re excited to see Mr. Scorsese take the reins of this visceral, tumultuous ride.”

We'll probably be seeing DiCaprio and the cast around Wall Street since production is expected to begin in August.

And just in case you're not already familiar with Belfort's book, here's a synopsis from Amazon

By day he made thousands of dollars a minute. By night he spent it as fast as he could, on drugs, sex, and international globe-trotting. From the binge that sank a 170-foot motor yacht, crashed a Gulfstream jet, and ran up a $700,000 hotel tab, to the wife and kids who waited for him at home, and the fast-talking, hard-partying young stockbrokers who called him king and did his bidding, here, in his own inimitable words, is the story of the ill-fated genius they called…

In the 1990s Jordan Belfort, former kingpin of the notorious investment firm Stratton Oakmont, became one of the most infamous names in American finance: a brilliant, conniving stock-chopper who led his merry mob on a wild ride out of the canyons of Wall Street and into a massive office on Long Island. Now, in this astounding and hilarious tell-all autobiography, Belfort narrates a story of greed, power, and excess no one could invent

Tori Spelling and her husband Dean McDermott are having yet another baby—just five months after giving birth to their third child together.

Another member of the clan means they need an even bigger house. So Spelling and McDermott have listed their quaint Point Dume home for $2.675 million, which they originally purchased in September 2011, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The house sits on 1.8 acres, featuring three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms.

During their short time in the house, the couple put in about $100,000 worth of renovations, including adding organic gardens, a chicken coop, new kitchen appliances, and 100-year-old French oak floors.

The house appears very modest for someone who grew up in the Spelling Mansion.

Let's take a look inside.

The wall paper is pretty funky, but this room would be great for a little girl.

What Your Favorite TV Homes Are Worth—Then And Now

Modern Family Cosby Show

We've opened up our homes to the Cosby clan, the dysfunctional families on "Mad Men" and a loveable "Modern Family"—and in turn, they opened up their fictional homes to eager viewers who relate to their scripted lives.

While we all know Carrie Bradshaw's "Sex and the City" digs were out of her journalist price range (trust us), do you ever wonder just how far on up the Jeffersons moved or the actual price of that "Downton Abbey" castle?

Vanity Fair spoke with our friend and "Shark Tank" real estate expert Barbara Corcoran, who looked at famous TV properties past and present to reveal their worth at the time of air and presently.

Sorry, "Golden Girls," but doesn't look like four raucous ladies in their latter years could have afforded the Miami sorority house they called home.

See which other popular TV homes are worth a lot—and those that are not.

"The Jeffersons" (1975–1985)

LOCATION: From a working-class neighborhood in Queens to an extravagant Manhattan apartment referred to as “Colby East.” In real life, the home was located at the Park Lane, a 35-story, 442-unit residential building at 185 East 85th Street.

THEN: “In 1975, rent on that apartment was between $600 and $800 in real life,” says New York real estate titan and "Shark Tank" panelist, Barbara Corcoran. “But today, all these years later, you would pay [that] on a monthly parking spot in that building—in the garage!”

NOW: Corcoran estimates the apartment would rent for about $3,600/month today.

"The Cosby Show" (1984-1992)

LOCATION: While viewers belived the Cosby clan lived in Brooklyn Heights, the real home was located at 10 Leroy Street in the West Village.

THEN: In 1984, a Brooklyn Heights brownstone would have gone for around $700,000.

NOW: A Brooklyn Heights town house would cost $5–$7 million, estimates Corcoran.

"Modern Family" (2009-Present)

LOCATION: When Jay (Ed O'Neill) and Gloria (Sofia Vergara) Pritchett lay down at night, it's in this Brentwood home built in 1992 by by Abramson Teiger architects. The show's co-creator Steven Levitan told the LA Times, “I would drive past it every day, and it looked like the modern house that so many rich, divorced older guys seem to end up in.”

THEN: 121 South Clifford Avenue last sold in 1997 for $2,695,000.

NOW: Due to California’s housing bubble, it’s worth about half that now, according to Corcoran.

UPDATE: New 'Hunger Games' Sequel Director Announced

$
0
0

Catching-Fire-Gary-Ross-Raise

Even though director Gary Ross made a "Hunger Games" adaptation that has shattered box office records and has received generally great reviews, the director will not be taking on the task of adapting the second film in the series

But now, less than a week after Ross stepped down from the director's chair, Lionsgate has already chosen a replacement.

Drumroll please ...

Francis Lawrence has been named director for "Catching Fire."

Lawrence is not inexperienced, he helmed the Will Smith vampire film "I Am Legend" and also directed Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon in the drama "Water for Elephants."

The director was chosen after the frontrunners for the job were narrowed down from Lawrence and "Moneyball" director Bennett Miller. Lawrence probably won the role due to his experience with action films and because he is comfortable adapting books into films (Both "I Am Legend" and "Water for Elephants" are highly regarded pieces of literature.)

Now Lawrence must take the reins on the "Hunger Games" sequel and review the script written by the Oscar-winning director of "Slumdog Millionaire," Simon Beaufoy

So why did all this director shake-up occur in the first place?

Ross says it's over scheduling conflicts. The "Hunger Games" director's official statement on the matter says this, "Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct 'Catching Fire'. As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule."

Ross also made it explicitly clear that rumors of a difficult negotiations are just that: rumors. He says Lionsgate has been extremely supportive of him and understanding.

The movie studio also released a statement about the news, "We’re very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct 'Catching Fire.' We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work. This will not be the end of our relationship, as we consider Ross to be part of the Lionsgate family and look forward to working with him in the future."

The big worry about the tight production schedule came from Fox's desire to make another X-Men film.  "Hunger Games" star Jennifer Lawrence will have to finish "Catching Fire" production so she can reprise her role as the young Mystique. Fox agreed to push back shooting of their "X-Men: First Class" sequel to January 2013 but Ross felt the time allotted was not enough to produce the best work.

Many big budget book-to-movie adaptations have had problems with keeping directors throughout the franchise. The two most famous are of course the revolving door of "Harry Potter" directors and Summit's "Twilight" director switch ups. Hopefully this switch from Ross to Lawrence will produce "Harry Potter"-like directorial success.

Now read why "The Hunger Games" is not "Battle Royale," despite what critics may say... >

Why Millennials Are Nothing Like The 'Girls' On HBO's Show

$

Jana working hard wheelbarrow

If one more person compares my generation to Lena Dunham's troubled "Girls," I am going to lose it.

Yes, I have friends who've had the luxury of passing on paid internships—all I've done since college —and who held out for a job while their parents supported them.

But that's not me. And to suggest that "Girls" defines my entire generation is a slap in the face to every hard working 20-something out there.

You see, I've never had the luxury of relying on my parents to get by. I moved to New York from Slovakia in 2000, and have supported myself ever since I turned 18.

My eastern European parents instilled in me a strong work ethic, which makes me nothing like the "Girls" on TV.

Here's what they taught me:

Think ahead. As a teen, I longed to go to a prestigious college, but as acceptance letters poured in, so did the financial paperwork. We couldn't afford those schools. And my parents wouldn't allow me to get saddled with loans for the rest of my life. I attended Baruch College in New York instead, and things worked out fine.

Don't spend money you don’t have. My parents' idea of “living within your means” didn't mean living within your credit limit. My father said: "Credit cards are good to lend you money for a month. But at the end of the month, you should pay it all back. No minimum payments, Jana." Today, I'm debt-free

Have a safety net. When I got my first check, my parents asked, “How much of that is going into your savings?” Now I get anxious when I can't put away some of that money every month. I've never looked at them as a life raft.

Don't be too proud to work your way up. Unlike Dunham's character in the show, my parents moved away when I was 18 and insisted I support myself. Since then, I've been a hostess, an accountant and a restaurant manager. I even babysit on the side. In this economy, we can't afford to snub our noses at lower-paying jobs or paid internships.

Give back. My father used to tell a story of three coins: A father earns three coins, spends one on his parents, one on himself and his wife, and another on his children. As adults, the children earn three coins then pay back the one their father spent on them by spending it on him—just as he spent the coin on his parents. Recently, I took my parents on a vacation.

Now read how this writer clawed her way out of debt to pay off her credit card >

20 Celebrities Who Are High School Dropouts

Celebrity-High-School-Dropouts

We've shown you the celebrities who graduated from Ivy-League schools and went on to bright futures in Hollywood.

But what about the ones who never even made it past the 12th grade?

From celebrities like Humphrey Bogart, who was expelled from prep school, to Pamela Anderson who, let's face it, probably wouldn't have gone anywhere different with a degree, here are 20 celebrities who still made it big without higher education.

Some probably could have used a bit more schooling.

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson decided to drop out of high school when she caught the attention of Columbia Records' executive producer Tommy Mottola

The singer was immediately signed to the label. But don't worry, Simpson eventually earned her GED.

Now we're sure she knows what chicken of the sea really is.

Jim Carrey

The Canadian born comedian was clearly headed for stardom from day one, so it's no surprise that he dropped out of school at 16.

Though most people can't say the same, the drop worked out well for him—Carey went on to make hilarious films after his big break as the "token white guy" (as he called it on "The Tonight Show") on "In Living Color."

Paris Hilton

The Hilton heiress moved around and was constantly changing schools.

She attended freshman year of high school in California but was quickly moved to the East Coast to attend the Convent of the Sacred Heart, where Lady Gaga was also a student at the time. But that didn't last long either.

After finally settling in at Caterbury Boarding School in Connecticut, Hilton was promptly expelled for violating school rules.

WATCH: Lifestyles Of People Who Live In The World's Smallest Houses

Fair Companies Kirsten Dirksen Makes Tiny House Movie| Small House Movement

Interesting homes have become an area of intrigue here at The Blaze.

From the world’s largest treehouse to some of the smallest abodes ever seen, we’ve covered them all.

Now, for those who find themselves dumbfounded, perplexed and curious regarding how individuals can make everyday-use of very tiny spaces, there’s a new documentary coming called, “We the Tiny House People.”

The film, set to release on April 23, documents the people who — whether they know it or not — are part of the so-called “Small House Movement.”

Fair Companies’ Kirsten Dirksen, who produced the new documentary after capturing hundreds of hours of film, explains how she first discovered the movement and began promoting the ultra-miniature homes:

I stumbled into the Small House Movement by accident of location- my parents live within miles of the tiny house poster boy Jay Shafer and his 89 square foot home-, but within a couple of years I had become a part of it as one of the few, and most likely only, videographers documenting small shelters on a regular basis. [...]

I continue to discover people- who often aren’t even aware there’s a movement of their type (see Small House Society)- living in shipping containersshacks, houseboats, converted garages, cavestool sheds, former pigeon coops, Airstream trailers and treehouses. They don’t all think alike, but all those I’ve interviewed see their decision to live small as a choice, and often as the most direct path to an examined, and happier, life. [...]

I‘m reluctant to claim there’s some sort of magic in small abodes- I’m sure some people are watching simply for the “house porn” (as Shafer describes it)-, but it’s obvious these stripped-down shelters reveal for us the essense of home, and for many, make it a bit easier to “suck the marrow out of life”.

Dirksen has released an 11-minute trailer that gives a lens into the knowledge that viewers can expect to gain from the tiny-home film. Watch it, below:

Here's The Film Set To Stop 'Hunger Games' Dead In Its Tracks At The Box Office

think-like-a-man

Bet "The Hunger Games" is wishing its one-week return to IMAX was this weekend, rather than next.

It looks like the film may not hold the top spot at the box office after Sunday.

For the past four weeks the film, based on the best-selling novel by Suzanne Collins, has held the number one spot, earning more than $536 million worldwide, with little competition to slow it down until "The Avengers" comes out May 4.

So, what's going to beat out the girl on fire?

Early reports show "Think Like a Man" is on track to take the crown with a weekend estimate well above $20 million. (Keep in mind "Hunger Games" brought in $21 million last week.)

Never heard of it?

The film is based on Steve Harvey's bestselling advice book of the same name featuring Kevin Hart, Gabrielle Union and Chris Brown.

The film raked in $500,000 at midnight openings and should earn somewhere between $8 and $10 million for the day.

"Hunger Games" was just announced to return to IMAX theaters for one week, which should give it an added push at theaters; however, that won't be until next weekend. Tough break.

Watch a trailer for "Think Like a Man" below:

Trailers-Week4-Emma Stone

Here it is, the fourth installment of your weekly trailers.

This time around, we get a glimpse into the beginnings of gynecology (in a way) with the creation of the vibrator. Apparently it just used to be an electronic feather duster.

In other trailer news, Channing Tatum used to strip and loves making furniture in "Magic Mike" while Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield get lovey-dovey in the newest "Amazing Spider-Man" trailer with Japanese subtitles.

"Free Samples" –April 20th (Tribeca Film Festival)

Indie darling Jess Weixler stars as a young Stanford drop-out who has to give out free ice cream samples as she rediscovers herself. Along the way, she meets and starts up a romance with "The Social Network" star Jesse Eisenberg

"Get the Gringo" –May 1st (VOD)

Mel Gibson is bypassing a U.S. release with his newest film about a man stuck in unusual circumstances in Mexico. The film will be released only on demand in the U.S.

"Hysteria" –May 18th

So back in the early 1900s, women were commonly diagnosed with "hysteria" when doctors could not understand their different symptoms.

In order to "cure" them, they invented the vibrator. Before the vibrator, doctors were "curing" women with their hands. Doesn't really seem so clinical ...

Hugh Dancy stars as the creator of the vibrator and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a tough woman who challenges his methods and diagnosis of "Hysteria."
