The Cut-ups Young YouTubeSome of YouTube's biggest stars are extremely young.

From little kids like toy reviewer EvanTubeHD to brothers ZayZay and Jojo, kids are getting their start on the platform at pretty early ages — and they're becoming super successful.

We rounded up a list of our favorite nine stars (some are duos or groups), all people who have used YouTube to skyrocket to fame.

Most of these celebs are young, but we also noted a few who took advantage of YouTube's boom several years ago and never looked back.

Teala Dunn, 17

Dunn, who is a veteran actor on various shows like "Dog With A Blog," uses YouTube as a way to get to know her fans. With nearly 500,000 subscribers, this 17-year-old does everything from makeup tutorials to videos about her morning routine.

Evan is the 8-year-old behind EvanTubeHD, a family-friendly YouTube channel where Evan (and occasionally his sister or mom) reviews toys and video games. Evan and his dad created the channel a few years ago, and now, with nearly 900,000 subscribers, the family makes millions in ad revenue from their videos.

Bunny, 26

Bunny, aka Grav3YardGirl, may be on the older side of the young stars, but her fanbase is extremely young. With 3.8 million subscribers on YouTube, she is one of the most popular stars on the platform. In New York City, a line three blocks long formed the morning she announced she would be appearing at Tart to see fans.

Robert Downey Jr.: 'Iron Man 4' Is Happening

robert downey jr ellen

In September, Robert Downey, Jr. said there were no plans for another "Iron Man" sequel, but it looks like that has changed.

During an appearance on "The Ellen Show" Tuesday, Downey, Jr. confirmed that talks for "Iron Man 4" are indeed underway.

Here's how the conversation went down:

DeGeneres: "Will there be a fourth "Iron Man"?

Downey, Jr.: "I know there's going to be a bunch more Marvel movies and they have big ideas of how to do it best and we're in the middle of negotiations ..."

DeGeneres: "So, yes?"

Downey, Jr.: "Okay, yes. Yes."

Earlier this week, Downey, Jr. Deadline pegged Downey, Jr. as saying he would do "Iron Man 4" if Mel Gibson directed

In a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) Tuesday, the actor clarified it was an offhanded remark but that there are other projects he has in mind to do with Gibson.

Downey, Jr. also hinted the "Marvel Roster" will be revealed "sooner than later" to the public. So keep an eye out for more Marvel news especially with New York Comic Con in the coming days.

Celebs Taking Photos Of Themselves Just After Waking Up Is The New Ice Bucket Challenge

More than 6 million ice bucket challenge videos were posted to Facebook and Instagram earlier this year, helping the ALS Association raise more than $95m. Now UNICEF wants to get in on the viral fundraising craze with a new challenge: the #WakeUpCall selfie.

The idea is simple. You don’t need to get wet and you don’t even need to get out of bed.

Just take a photo of yourself as soon as you’ve woken up, post to a social network with the hashtag #WakeUpCall, donate £5 ($8) to Unicef and nominate three friends to do the same.

A host of celebrities have already taken part.

Here’s Naomi Campbell’s #WakeUpCall:

Stephen Fry has taken part, too:

This is what actor Tom Hiddleston looks like when he wakes up:

British model Daisy Lowe has given it a go:

The new challenge is reminiscent of the #NoMakeUpSelfie challenge, which was also a huge viral hit in the UK and helped raise an £8 million ($12.8 million) windfall for Cancer Research UK.

New York Comic Con kicks off this week!

From Thursday to Sunday, fans of all ages will head to the Javits Center in Manhattan to celebrate all things comics, television, and film.

Last year 133,000 people attended, according to host ReedPop, hoping to see favorite actors and writers at the four-day annual event, now in its ninth year.

We’ll be there all weekend gearing up to see "The Walking Dead" cast and creator, a sneak peek at Disney's coming films, and Netflix's new show "Daredevil."

A first look at two of Disney's next movies.

We've already seen trailers for Disney's first animated Marvel movie, "Big Hero 6," which looks like another early hit. Disney should be sharing a clip from the film out this November.

What we're really excited about is getting our first look at "Tomorrowland," a sci-fi action adventure starring George Clooney and Hugh Laurie based on the area of the same name in the Disney theme parks.

Director Brad Bird ("The Incredibles") and producer Damon Lindelof ("Lost") will be in attendance. Until now, the picture has pretty much been shrouded in secrecy. It was supposed to be released this year but was pushed back to a May 2015 release.

What's next for "Godzilla."

After a huge $92.3 million opening weekend, Legendary and Warner Bros. confirmed a "Godzilla" sequel was in the works.

Director Gareth Edwards will return to direct. Though we know the new film will contain three new foes for 'zilla, we haven't heard much else about the film. That may change Thursday during a 60th-anniversary panel for the monster.

What really happened to Nicolas Cage's Superman movie.

Did you know Nicolas Cage was almost the Man of Steel in a canned Superman movie?

Tim Burton, who brought us 1989's "Batman" was set to release "Superman Lives" in the summer of 1998; however, the film never made it to theaters.

coming documentary called "The Death of 'Superman Lives'" plans to reveal what happened to the film. Producers will be on hand to answer questions about Burton's unreleased movie. We even may get to see a few clips from the making of the never-released film.

STEPHEN COLLINS' LAWYER: Wife Threatened Tape Release To Get 'Millions Of Dollars More' In Divorce

stephen collins wife faye grant

Stephen Collins' lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, is fighting back against allegations that his client is a child molester after TMZ published an audio recording yesterday in which the 67-year-old confessed to exposing himself and inappropriate conduct with young girls.

But Kaplan says the audiotape, which was secretly recorded during a therapy session with Collins' wife between 20 and 40 years ago, isn't all that it seems. Kaplan says Collins' estranged wife, Faye Grant, never said a word about such allegations during the entire divorce proceedings.

"Over the course of my representation of Stephen in the divorce case, Faye has repeatedly threatened to give this audiotape to the media unless Stephen agreed to pay her millions of dollars more than that to which she was legally entitled," Kaplan told TMZ.

Mark Vincent KaplanHe goes on, "When these demands were rebuffed, Faye attempted -- without success -- to peddle the tape in numerous ways to numerous different people.  It appears that she has finally found an audience for this tape -- not surprisingly, on the eve of the trial in the divorce case where, again, she is seeking millions of dollars more than that to which she is legally entitled."

Kaplan told TMZ he would like to address the audio confession but can't, saying, "Though we would like to address the tape itself, the circumstances dictate that we must regrettably refrain from doing so at this time."

When Collins and Grant announced in 2012 that they were getting divorced, Grant told E! News: "Stephen's filing for divorce is a surprise. I am devastated. I wish him the very best in whatever path he chooses to take. Twenty-seven years of marriage in Hollywood is the equivalent of 189 dog years. I was exhausted."

The couple got married in 1985 and have one daughter together.

In the wake of the tape release, Collins has been fired from "Ted 2," resigned from his position on the SAG-AFTRA board, and "7th Heaven" re-runs have been pulled from TV.

Collins is best known for his role as a pastor and father on the family TV drama "7th Heaven." He played a Christian father to seven children. Since the show ended in 2007, he has taken other TV and movie roles, most often playing a dad.

Gwyneth Paltrow Reveals How She Hired Martha Stewart's CEO

gwyneth paltrow

On Monday, Gwyneth Paltrow announced that she hired Lisa Gersh, the former CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, to be the new CEO of Goop  the actress' lifestyle blog and weekly newsletter.

The announcement came just a few weeks after Stewart slammed Paltrow, saying, "She just needs to be quiet. She’s a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart."

During Tuesday’s “Most Powerful Women Summit” with Fortune, Paltrow sarcastically replied to Stewart's diss: “No one has ever said anything bad about me before! I’m shocked and devastated. I'll try to recover.

On a more serious note, Paltrow added, "If I'm really honest, I'm really psyched that she sees us as competition. I'm so psyched, I really am."

Lisa GershBut it appears Paltrow is having the last laugh with her most recent hire, Gersh  a savvy media-industry executive with over a decade of startup experience  "who left Stewart’s company early last year, after just six months at the helm, over disagreements with the veteran lifestyle guru about how to expand her business," states Fortune.

Gersh ended up accepting the new job at GOOP over a home cooked meal at Paltrow's home.

“Gwyneth invited me over to her house in LA for dinner, which she pulled off effortlessly,” Gersh told Fortune. Over “an amazing chicken stir-fry and salmon with hoisin sauce," the two two entrepreneurial working moms brainstormed what Goop’s future might look like with Gersh at the helm.

Paltrow told her side of the story while speaking during Fortune's "Most Powerful Women Summit" on Tuesday:

"When it started to become clear to me that we were becoming a business and having impact on other business, I was so lucky to meet Lisa through [fitness guru] Tracey Anderson. My first CEO was in London and I'm in L.A. so when we parted ways, he stayed on as an advisor but I was looking for someone here to help me take things to the next level. Lisa was over for dinner one night and she said she would take the job."

"We have a lot of very exciting plans. GOOP is becoming this amazing collective of really bright, really fascinating women who I'm learning so much from," added Paltrow. "We are small, but we're growing. When I started GOOP, it was really just for myself and my friends. I didn't forsee the community I was creating  and the brand that I was unwittingly creating. I sometimes look back and think, 'What was I doing?'"

In 2015, GOOP will be launching a line of "wardrobe basics" and other products with more established designers. They'll also start selling ads.

As for the diss from Martha Stewart and other critics of an actress entering the lifestyle and tech space, Paltrow says:

"I think that when anybody criticizes anyone, it's more revealing about where they are in time and space than where you are. It's usually a reflection of something else. At this point in my life, I don't take it personally, I see it as a projection. If there's ever anything that sticks I think, 'Hm, maybe I'm holding this judgement against myself' and I need to look at that. Sometimes I learn good things from criticism."

Jimmy Buffett Asked The CEO Of Spotify For A Raise

Jimmy Buffet

Jimmy Buffett thinks musicians deserve a raise in the digital music era.

At the Vanity Fair Summit conference Wednesday, Buffett asked Spotify CEO Daniel Ek what the streaming service is doing to make sure artists get their fair share of streaming music revenues.

"We're at the end of the pipeline," Buffett told Ek. "When money goes to the label in a stream, it trickles to the artist. Do you see anything in the future where we might get a raise from you instead of going through the bull — you have to with the labels these days?"

Ek said Spotify is trying. It has a special site artists can look at to see how many streams they're getting on Spotify. This, Ek said, is opening a dialogue between the artists and the labels that will hopefully result in the artists getting a larger cut.

Ek also said Spotify pays 70% of its revenue to the labels. That'll amount to a little over $1 billion this year.

But Buffett pointed out artists still aren't getting enough. $1 billion may sound impressive, but "that's lower than we used to get," Buffett said.

Check out Buffett and Ek at the Vanity Fair Summit in the video below:

You Can Buy 5,700 Video Games, Including Complete Sets From Nintendo And Sega, For Just $164,000

Video games for sale

There are video game collections.

And then there are VIDEO GAME COLLECTIONS.

And for $164,000, you can be the proud owner of an intense VIDEO GAME COLLECTION.

A seller by the name of "reel.big.fish" is selling his massive video game collection on eBay for the Buy It Now price of $164,000. Or you can make him an offer he can't refuse.

Game Boy games

Included in those 5,700 games are 835 Nintendo games, 744 Super Nintendo games, 492 Sega Genesis games, as well as some games for PlayStation, Xbox, and Atari. (The seller has posted a very detailed list of everything that you get for $164,000.)

Unfortunately, the really rare Nintendo World Championship, which sold earlier this year for almost $100,000, is not on the list.

Most of the games are from the 1980s and '90s, and are therefore listed as "used." But many of the games come with the box or instructions or both.

But how does someone even get that many games?

“My method for putting together a collection like this is just [building it] game by game, searching out garage sales, thrift stores, and pawn shops,” the seller, whose real name is Aaron N. (he didn't want his last name given), told GamesBeat. “To me, hunting out the game and giving them a new home where they are appreciated is really a great deal of fun.”

You can also take a tour of his video game collection in the video below, if you want a closer look:

REPORT: NBC Tried To Get Jon Stewart To Host 'Meet The Press'

The Daily Show Jon Stewart

According to a story published by New York Magazine's Gabriel Sherman on Wednesday, NBC tried to get Jon Stewart to host its flagship weekend political talk show, "Meet The Press," last summer.

Sherman attributed his story to "three senior television sources with knowledge of the talks" including one who said the network was willing to give Stewart almost "anything." NBC did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider about Sherman's report.

Stewart currently hosts Comedy Central's "Daily Show," which is satirical, but he has developed a reputation for conducting incisive interviews with political figures  since taking over that program in 1999.

Chuck Todd, who was previously a reporter and analyst for NBC News as well as host of MSNBC's "Daily Rundown," began hosting "Meet The Press" last month.

Todd replaced David Gregory. The change was preceded by months of rumors of Gregory's impending departure as the show struggled in the ratings compared to its competition on other networks. Todd's first week last month featured an exclusive interview with President Barack Obama, but since then, "Meet The Press" has returned to third place.

An Entrepreneur Who Inspired A 'Wolf Of Wall Street' Character Is Selling His Crazy Tribeca Condo For $43.5 Million

3 Hubert St Alan Wilzig $43.5 million

Alan Wilzig, a real-life inspiration for a character in Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,” is selling his Tribeca condo for $43.5 million without a broker, The Real Deal reports.

The entrepreneur and semi-professional race car driver posted the home on Zillow.com as well as Facebook.

“Feel free to share this with your luxury real estate friends for anyone interested in a Manhattan super-residence,” Wilzig posted on his Facebook account, according to The Real Deal. “All brokers protected. I have no problem paying or sharing in paying a commission(s) – but I’m not willing at the present time to grant an exclusive with any one broker or firm. (Especially since a dozen of my good friends are all NYC brokers.)”

The 7,500-square-foot townhouse at 3 Hubert Street has a 2,500-square-foot roof deck, backyard, six bedrooms, and an attached garage where Wilzig currently stores his insane amount of motorcycle memorabilia. It also has bulletproof windows and a lighting system that would give Miami clubs a run for their money.

In the Scorsese film, Wilzig inspired the character at the pool party scene who introduced Leonardo Di Caprio’s character to his future wife. Wilzig originally took issue with his portrayal, lamenting that his red Ferrari Testarossa was left out of the scene.

An earlier version of this post said Wilzig had sold his home. The post has been corrected.

Entrepreneur and semi-professional race car driver Alan Wilzig is selling his townhouse for $43.5 million — with no broker.

In total, the home has 7,500 square feet of space.

It also has a 2,500-square-foot roof deck.

Jay Leno May Return To TV With A Car Show On CNBC

Jay Leno Ian Callum Mille Miglia

Jay Leno's days as Tonight Show host may be over, but that doesn't mean he's out of show business.

In fact, he could be coming back to primetime television with a car show on CNBC.

Jay Leno's representatives told Business Insider that the deal hasn't yet been confirmed and they aren't able to comment at this time.

Sources tell entertainment trade publication Hollywood Reporter that Leno's deal with CNBC is close to completion. Since Leno's departure from his perch atop late night television hierarchy in February, the veteran comedian has kept busy by taking his comedy show on the road.

Leno also stars in his wildly popular NBC-produced car-centric web series, Jay Leno's Garage that airs on YouTube. In July, the comic legend and CNBC teamed up to make an hour-long special edition of Jay Leno's Garage that aired on the cable network.

This will be Leno's first foray into primetime TV since the failed Jay Leno Show that aired on NBC in 2009. In 2008, Leno turned down the opportunity to helm NBC's American adaptation of the hit BBC car show Top Gear

An Introduction Into The Wild World Of Cosplay

0
0

cosplay bobafet star wars NYCC

If you are in New York City this weekend, you may see Link in line at McDonalds or Sailor Moon on the subway. New York Comic Con kicks off the ninth year of the annual comic book and entertainment convention, and the cosplay is sure to be impressive.

Surely by now you've heard the word cosplay tossed around, but do you really know what it is, or how much the hobby costs?

Literally speaking, cosplay is the combination of the words "costume" and "play." Cosplayers, the people who partake in cosplay, dress as their favorite characters from comics, video games, anime, manga, movies, and television.

The best supported origin story on the Internet says that in 1984, Nov Takahashi, founder and writer for the anime publishing company Studio Hard, was sent to Los Angeles to cover the World-Con science fiction convention. He was impressed by the fans' costumes and the elaborate displays at the masquerade, and when he returned to Japan, he coined the term to describe what he saw.

Today, cosplay is a favorite ritual of Comic Con attendees. Business Insider attended last year, and we saw dozens of Batmen, Iron Men, and Wonder Women, in addition to niché costumes, like characters of the Japanese manga series "Attack on Titan" and '90s throwbacks like Freakazoid and Hey Arnold.

nycc comic con cosplay gandolf

The costumes vary greatly in intensity. Some crafty cosplayers get resourceful and repurpose clothing and props they already own. For instance, to cosplay as Katniss Everdeen of the "Hunger Games" franchise, all you need is a black t-shirt, green cargo pants, lace-up boots, and hair tied into a braid. You can buy a Mockingjay pin replica for as little as $4 and use brown eye shadow for dirt smears.

Other cosplayers may choose to purchase their costumes from an online store, like Milanoo or Cosplay House. On Milanoo, prices range from $21 for a Dragonball Z jumpsuit on clearance to $197 for a black latex catsuit.

For those who want to go above and beyond and create something entirely unique, they can commission costumes from specialists, many of whom operate their businesses on Etsy. You send a description of what you want, pictures of the character for clarity, your measurements, and any special customization requests.

In the world of cosplay, you frequently have to decide between three requirements: "Time, quality, or money. You can only have one," said Iggy Tissera, a professional cosplayer and panelist at last year's "I Have No Sewing Machine, But I Must Cosplay!" presentation. "If you want it to be well made, it's going to take a while and it's going to cost you."

nycc comic con cosplay

Lindsey Celak, who led the panel as Sexy Indiana Jones, described a "sticker shock" experience a few years ago when she wanted to be Giselle, of Disney's animated movie "Enchanted." She requested a price quote from a commissioner — asking for specific, high-quality materials and hand-embroidered flowers — and discovered it would cost $850.

"If you're going for accuracy [of the character], you're going to pay for it," Celak said. "Close enough usually suffices." She instead purchased a lace costume from "one of those 'Made in China' sites" and says it's held up splendidly since.

For cosplayers, the experience is nearly always worth the stress of choosing a costume and dropping the dough. It's an opportunity to be a hero, princess, or otherworldly creature.

"It takes courage to put on a costume and go into public," Tissera said. "But we're celebrating the characters that we love and embracing our fandom."

Warning: This video contains strong language.

It's back!

Thousands of people are descending on the Javits Convention Center in Manhattan dressed as their favorite television, film, comic, video game costumes, and more for New York Comic Con.

Some of the fans are dedicated cosplayers, visiting all Comic Con and anime conventions, and spending all their time and money on handmade costumes.

Last year we met Jenni Hashimoto, a 25-year-old cosplayer living in New York. She and her friends were dressed as characters of 'Cowboy Bebop' for the day, and between their Comic Con commitments they did a photoshoot recreating some of their favorite scenes from the show.

New York Comic Con 2013 Enterance

Today is the first day of New York Comic Con!

From October 9-12 comic, TV, and film fans will flock to the Javits Center in Manhattan.

Now in its ninth year, NYCC is attracting crowds the size of San Diego's Comic-Con that started back in the '70s. While the two have no relation (NYCC is run by exhibitor ReedPOP) 133,000 turned out for the event last year.

If you're not familiar with NYCC, the four-day extravaganza offers sneak peeks at show screenings before they air on TV. In addition to a giant art gallery and comic display, there are games to play, freebies to collect, and if you're wandering around the showroom floor, you may even bump into a star from one of your favorite shows.

This year, even more people are expected to attend. Tickets for the four-day event sold out back in June in mere minutes after technical difficulties on the New York Comic Con website left some fans frustratedReedPOP tells Business Insider more passes have been made available for Thursday.

the walking dead rick daryl

Warning: There are spoilers ahead!

Season 5 of "The Walking Dead" premieres Sunday, Oct. 12 on AMC at 9 p.m.

The last time we saw Rick, Carl, and the rest of the gang, they were reunited at the mysterious Terminus before getting trapped in a boxcar.

A record 15.7 million people tuned in for the season 4 finale earlier this year. Expect Season 5 to set another record this weekend.

Not caught up with the show? Here's what you should know about the new season before its return.

There will be 16 episodes.

Once again, the series will be split in two halves.

The first eight episodes will premiere Sunday, Oct. 12 with the final episode airing Nov. 30. After that, fans will have to wait through the winter for the series to return in 2015.

The first six minutes of the season premiere are supposed to be excellent.

Don't tune in late to season 5.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Cinemablend was told by multiple people on the cast and crew the first six minutes of the season premiere will be "seriously intense."

Lead actor Andrew Lincoln said he was shocked that some of the stuff they filmed even made it to screen.

"All of us were just dumbstruck and said, ‘We’re not going to be able to show this. We’re not going to be able to show this.’” said Lincoln.

The zombies will look even grislier.

Special effects makeup artist Greg Nicotero is going to make the walkers look even more decayed this season.

"Greg is introducing a new state of decay to the walkers," showrunner Scott Gimple told CinemaBlend. "He does walkers without noses and it doesn’t look fake."

George Clooney surprised fans Thursday at the first day of New York Comic Con by appearing onstage for Disney’s "Tomorrowland" panel, which the actor co-wrote with Damon Lindelof.

“It’s good to see you all. If you guys need to know anything about the plot just ask me — everybody dies in the end,” Clooney joked after taking the stage, adding, "Yes this is my first Comic-Con. The Amazing 70-Year Evolution Of The Batmobile

Batman Batmobile

Since the 1960s, one man has been able to protect Gotham from the myriad of enemies that have besieged the city.

He's Bruce Wayne by day, Batman by night.

And just like how the Caped Crusader's logo has changed over the last 70 years, his vehicle has gone under a similar evolution.

From the original Batmobile to the Tumbler of the recent Dark Knight films, the car has changed massively to suit whatever adventure Batman is on.

With Comic Con coming to New York this weekend — and with "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" hitting theaters in 2016 — we figured this would be a good time to revisit the iconic Batmobile's history.

We consulted withbatmobilehistory.com to figure out some of the hottest rides the Caped Crusader has used over the the last 70 years.

[An earlier version of this post was written by Travis Okulski.]

The first car to be referred to as a 'Batmobile' appeared in Detective Comics #48 way back in 1941. It was far more subtle than any of its successors; It just had a small gold bat on the hood. The car looks to be based on a Cord Roadster.

Perhaps the most famous Batmobile comes from the 1960's TV series starring Adam West. Based on a Lincoln Futura, king customizer George Barris designed this bat-ride with a number of cool gadgets and unique features.

The Batmobile from the 1970's 'Superfriends' series is an evolution of the 1960s Futura. Color went from black to blue and the now iconic Bat-logo made an appearance.

How This Rapid Learning Technique Helped Produce Some Of The World's Best Comedians

steve carrell second cityThink of some of the best comedic actors over the past half century.

You might come up with names like Steve Carrell, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Bill Murray, and Joan Rivers. What's the common thread? All of these comedy icons are alumni of The Second City improv group, which has two schools in Chicago and a branch in Toronto.

For his new book "Smartcuts: How Hackers, Innovators, and Icons Accelerate Success," Shane Snow went to the original Second City location on Chicago's North Side and figured out that the school has produced such consistently funny people for so long because it lets them behave fearlessly as they learn the craft. The rapid feedback they get from fellow students and coaches pointing out why jokes failed helps them improve their comedic acting skills at an accelerated rate.

Snow writes:

The fast-paced improv format allows actors to redirect the action, change scenes, and cut off jokes that aren't working. Performers typically take audience suggestions for topics or backstories for characters, then act out the first thing that comes to mind. Amid all the zaniness that ensues, casts can slip in scenes they've been considering for their show and gauge audience reactions. And though sometimes the material is dreadful, it doesn't matter. They can fail without failing.

The Second City process is about getting performers comfortable with negative feedback so that they can seperate their egos from criticism.

Snow writes that the performers achieve accelerated growth because "(1) it gives them rapid feedback; (2) it depersonalizes the feedback; and (3) it lowers the stakes and pressure, so students take risks that force them to improve."

In 1996, the researchers Avraham N. Kluger and Angelo DeNisi found that experts in a given field much preferred negative feedback to positive, since the former is actionable. But they also found that harsh negative feedback actually hinders the output of novices who have not built up confidence that comes with experience.

The Second City breaks down its students natural fear of criticism by easing them into it. It "has students continuously parlay up to harder audiences and harsher feedback as they grow more comfortable. This forces them to both toughen up and push creative boundaries," Snow writes.

In a traditional acting class, a group may spend an entire semester fine-tuning a single performance, and if it's not as well-received as they would have hoped, there's nothing they can do about it.

"Funny is right at the line. Just a little bit uncomfortable. Just at the place where it could fail. And just like a muscle, you have to fail a little bit in order to improve," a Second City teacher identified only as Anne told Snow.

Steve Carrell may be one of the funniest people in Hollywood, but as a Second City student he once told a joke so offensive an entire audience stormed out of the theater.

For an example of what a great Second City performance looks like after hours of missed jokes, here's an old tape of Tina Fey performing with Rachel Dratch:
