11 Ridiculous Celebrity Diets Depicted As Classical Still-Lifes

Beyonce

Ever since humans began eating food (so, forever), people have had strange diets. Some people constrict their eating habits for religious reasons, others to lose weight, and some people, like Henry VIII, had no restrictions whatsoever.

While many people scoff at celebrity diets, thinking they are shallow or unimportant, photographer Dan Bannino thinks they have the potential for beauty. His series, "Still Diets," takes these diets and turns them into still lifes, harkening back to classical paintings of the past.

"I wanted to make them significant, like classic works of arts that are becoming more and more weighty as they grow older. My aim was to show how this weirdness hasn’t changed even since the 15th century," says Bannino.

People from Beyoncé, who's Master Cleanse Diet is depicted above, or Mariah Carey, who reportedly only eats purple foods, show that that "weirdness" is still there. Enjoy the pictures, we'll go back to eating our burritos.

Beyoncé, while preparing for her role in "Dreamgirls" in 2006, lost 20 pounds on the controversial Master Cleanse Diet, which involves drinking a mixture of lemons, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup. It also includes consuming a "salt water flush," which helps clean out you digestive tract.

In an effort to drop some pounds for Chelsea's wedding, former President Bill Clinton was rumored to have tried the Cabbage Soup diet, which involves eating a ton of cabbage soup and not much else.

Kate Moss was once rumored to be on the so-called "Hollywood Diet", which included liquor, champagne, diet soda, and not much solid food.

Joan Rivers' 5 Pieces Of Advice To Female Comics

joan rivers johnny carson

Joan Rivers may never admit that she was a pioneer in comedy, but she did take pride in being one of the first successful female comediennes of the '70s.

In 2012, Rivers wrote a candid piece for The Hollywood Reporter, detailing how her relationship with former "Tonight Show" co-host Johnny Carson turned sour after she left to host her own late-night show on Fox, which at the time existed as several small station.

Rivers didn't tell Carson about the news until rather late. In response, Carson was so mad he famously banned Rivers from "The Tonight Show," a ban which stayed in tact for nearly three decades until her appearance on the show this year when Jimmy Fallon took over as host

In her THR piece, she recalled how it hurt, but that she believed his anger was aimed at one simple thing: She was a woman and she tried to rival his show.

"He didn't like that as a woman, I went up against him," Rivers wrote.

sarah silverman joan riversShe goes on to say it's tough to be in the business, commenting on how difficult it can be for women to break into comedy. At the end, she lays out a series of advice to any other woman trying to make it big.

Here is her advice via The Hollywood Reporter.

1. "Don’t worry about the money."

"Love the process. You don’t know when it’s gonna happen. Louis C.K. started hitting in his 40s; he’d been doing it for 20 years."

2. "Don’t settle."

"I don’t want to ever hear, 'It’s good enough.' Then it’s not good enough."

3. "Don’t ever underestimate your audience."

"They can tell when it isn’t true."

4. "Ignore your competition."

"A Mafia guy in Vegas gave me this advice: 'Run your own race, put on your blinders.' Don’t worry about how others are doing. Something better will come."

5. "Ignore aging"

"Comedy is the one place it doesn’t matter. It matters in singing because the voice goes. It matters certainly in acting because you’re no longer the sexpot. But in comedy, if you can tell a joke, they will gather around your deathbed. If you’re funny, you’re funny. Isn’t that wonderful?"

"If there is a secret to being a comedian, it’s just loving what you do. It is my drug of choice. I don’t need real drugs. I don’t need liquor. It’s the joy that I get performing."

Here's What Chris Brown Says Jail Is Like For A Famous Singer

Chris Brown was released early from an L.A. county jail on June 2 after serving 108 days this year for a probation violation related to his conviction in the Rihanna domestic abuse case.

In his first interview since being released, the 25-year-old singer tells Billboard magazine about life behind bars.

Despite his celebrity status, Brown was treated just like other inmates and forced to stick to a strict schedule:

"A guard wakes you up; you eat. You stay in your cell most of the time, basically 24 hours a day. Maybe on Mondays you go to the roof inside of a cage and have a phone call. It's isolation. You have time to focus on what matters, on what to do and what not to do."

Brown, who is also known for his graffiti art, told the magazine: "Jail isn't a place of many creative spirits. But as far as my creativity, I put it on hold until I got out. Jail is more of a regimen and a structure. I'm more of a free spirit when it comes to creating music, painting and art."

It wasn't until his release that Brown says he started writing music again. His sixth studio album "X," is now due out Sept. 14.

Of his time behind bars, Brown says, "At the end of the day, it's just a humbling experience. You’re more appreciative of everything else that's on the outside. A burger tastes 1,000 times better when you're out."

The Designer Who Created Outfits For Beyoncé's VMA Performance Used A Lytro To Make An Interactive Gallery Of Her Work

Chromat, founded by Becca McCharen, is the first designer to use the power of Lytro's living pictures to bring designs to life.

The 3D lookbook makes sense: Many of the pieces Chromat created for the Spring Summer 2015 line were 3D printed, and capturing the process in 3D is a good way to get a feel for the designs.

3D-printed couture seems to be a hot trend this year. Some designers are even making their clothing available for download

haunted vmas beyonce

Chromat's not doing that quite yet, but the looks are definitely memorable.

Chromat has designed its signature scaffolding-like corsets and masks for Beyonce's "Mrs. Carter Show World Tour" and "On The Run" tour, as well as for Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, and Iggy Azalea.

Chromat also designed the outfits worn by Beyonce's dancers at this year's VMAs. "We got the call at 5 p.m. this Friday afternoon," McCharen said in an interview with Opening Ceremony. "We had 4 hours to make the masks before we overnighting them to L.A."

At Fashion Week on Thursday, Chromat revealed its new 2015 collection. And there's a documentary that showcases what went on behind the scenes in creating the first-ever 3D lookbook.

"We are excited to capture fashion photography in a different light at this premier event," said Azmat Ali, Lytro's vice president of marketing. "With its emphasis on design and presentation, fashion is the perfect industry to take advantage of the rich interactive photographic experience made possible by Lytro Illum."

The Illum is Lytro's second-generation light-field camera. It was released earlier this year

New York City-based fashion photographer Christine Hahn was in charge of photography for the Chromat lookbook, which you can check out below:

A Texas Judge Cited 'The Big Lebowski' In A Legal Decision

The Big Lebowski, bowling

Texas Supreme Court Justice Debra Lehrmann cited a quote from the cult film "The Big Lebowski" in a legal decision earlier this year.

Though the case of Kinney v. Barnes was back in January, we learned of it on Friday from C.J. Ciaramella's FOIA Newsletter. Legal blog Above The Law caught wind of the decision on Thursday.

It was a freedom of speech appeals case, in which Andrew Barnes wrote on two websites that Robert Kinney had been implicated in a kickback scheme while he was Barnes' employee. Kinney sued and demanded a permanent injunction against the allegedly defamatory statements.

"The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is similarly suspicious of prior restraints," wrote Justice Lehrman in the decision highlighting a cornerstone that has "been reaffirmed time and again by the Supreme Court, this Court, Texas courts of appeals, legal treatises, and even popular culture."

That last reference to popular culture contained an interesting footnote citing none other than Walter Sobchak, a character in the 1998 film "The Big Lebowski." This is the footnote:

texas judge big lebowski

"For your information, the Supreme Court has roundly rejected prior restraint!" Sobchak says in the movie, before continuing: "This affects all of us, man! Our basic freedoms!"

Here's the scene from the film (language warning):

Ciaramella called it the "footnote of the year." We're inclined to agree. Now mark it zero.

14 Breathtaking Skylines From 'Destiny' Gameplay

Tuesday is a huge day. Not only will Apple reveal the next iPhone, it's also the release date for the most-anticipated game of the year, "Destiny."

We've received a review copy of the next game from Bungie (the makers of "Halo"); however, we can't check it out until Monday when the game's servers go live.

Until then, let's revisit some breathtaking views from the game.

Back in June, we were able to preview the game during PlayStation's exclusive Alpha teaser. We often found ourselves looking up at the sky more than fighting off alien races.

Take a look at some of the views we captured, along with a few others we compiled from the more than 6.5 million gamers who played.

While there's a lot of fighting in the game, one thing everyone could agree on was that there were some stunning skylines.

In the game, you're given a vehicle called a Sparrow to ride around a futuristic Earth overrun by alien races.

It made it a lot easier to traverse across the vast map.

The Fabulous Life Of Oracle Heiress Megan Ellison

Megan Ellison

With a net worth of $51.3 billion, Oracle founder and CEO Larry Ellison is the fifth wealthiest person in the world.

Even as Ellison scoops up mansions and entire Hawaiian islands, he has transferred much of his wealth to his children, David and Megan, who have inherited some 3 million shares of Netsuite stock and 900,000 shares of Oracle stock each. According to Forbes, they could each be worth some $306 million from Netsuite assets alone.

And Megan, especially, seems to be doing well for herself. With Annapurna Pictures, the film production company she founded in 2011, she's produced some of the most critically acclaimed films of the last few years, including "Zero Dark Thirty" and "American Hustle." She gets to travel the world with celebrities and leads a life of insane luxury.

She's also become a real estate mogul in her own right, buying up mansions in a way that's reminiscent of her father's land grabs.

Megan Ellison was born on Jan. 31, 1986, in Santa Clara County, California. Her mother is Barbara Boothe, Larry Ellison's third wife. The couple was married in 1983 and split in 1986, when Megan was only 4 months old. Like her father, Megan was rebellious and tough from a young age. She posted this photo of herself to her Twitter account with the caption, "You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else."

Source: Vanity Fair, Twitter

Though Larry lives the flashy life you'd expect of a multibillionaire, his ex-wife Barbara leads a quieter existence as the owner of Wild Turkey Farm in Wilsonville, Oregon. She started raising horses in Woodside, California, while her children were still young and now takes care of more than 100 of them on the 215-acre farm.

Source: Vanity Fair, Wild Turkey Farm

When Megan was young, she began to develop an interest in horses during visits to her mother's Woodside spread. She started competing in some of the top riding competitions in the country, including the Young Rider Championships. She's seen here on a stallion named LioCalyon, competing in a High Juniors competition in Los Angeles.

We can't play yet since game servers won't be launched until Monday at 8 a.m. EST.

Until then, let's unpackage this bad boy and see what's inside.

Here it is! Since we checked out the "Destiny" Alpha and Beta previews on the PlayStation 4, we'll be playing on there until we get it for the Xbox One.

Let's take that sleeve off. All limited editions will be the same regardless of what console you're playing on. Check out that "Destiny" logo.

I Went To Burning Man And It Was Even Crazier Than I Expected

Burning Man CostumesLast year, I went to Burning Man for the first time.

Despite having attended many different festivalspreviously, Burning Man was unlike anything I have ever seen.

Burning Man, as the website proclaims, is "an annual art event and temporary community based on radical self expression and self-reliance in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada."

Last year, over 61,000 people attended, many of them in the tech industry.

While most people go for the full seven days, I only did four, so my experience may have been different from others. But the beauty of Burning Man is that everyone can have whatever kind of experience they want.

Check out my trip last year here >

For me, I loved biking around during the hot desert days looking at all of the beautiful art installations constructed in the middle of nowhere and taking advantage of strangers' generosity by way of wine tastings, zip lines and fried chicken.

For others, the festival comes alive at night. As the sun goes down, the lights of Black Rock City come up and the pulse of the music keeps people awake until well into the following day.

Since most people who haven't been to Burning Man seem to be confused by what it actually is, here are some photos that sum up my trip last year.

It all started with this: a cheap, leopard suitcase I purchased on the streets of NYC. Everything you bring to Burning Man you risk getting seriously dirty or losing. I felt okay sacrificing this.

I packed it full with costumes, sunscreen, sunglasses, flashlights, food, and other items on the official checklist. Everything is in plastic bags to keep it clean from the impending desert dust.

Upon arrival in Reno, the closest airport, I hit a Walmart to grab last-minute necessities such as jugs of water. Walmart was clearly prepared for all of the "Burners" driving from Reno.

Netflix Is Paying A Huge Amount For Fox's 'Gotham' Even Though It Hasn't Aired Yet

gotham ben mckenzie

Netflix is making a big bet on one of this fall's new TV shows before it even airs.

The site has already made a deal to stream Fox's Batman prequel series, "Gotham," before the show has even premiered.

Deadline reports Netflix paid Warner Bros. $1.75 million per episode. The series will follow Batman's origin story with a young Bruce Wayne and younger versions of some of Batman's biggest foes including Poison Ivy, The Penguin, and Catwoman. Ben McKenzie ("Southland") will play detective James Gordon who goes on to become the Commissioner.

Under the deal, Netflix will have the exclusive streaming rights to the new series. What's more is that the streaming service will not only offer "Gotham" in the U.S. but in all of its territories including new ones set to launch.

This could be a risky move for Netflix if the Batman show without Batman gets cancelled. However, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos called "Gotham" "the most anticipated new series of the fall season" in a statement.

Netflix also recently picked up the rights to NBC's "The Blacklist" at a reported $2 million-per-episode deal.

Each season of the show will be available after its broadcast run on air. It's believed "Gotham" won't be on Netflix until next September.

"Gotham" premieres September 22 on Fox.

One Of The Best Songs In ‘Frozen’ Was Nearly Cut From The Movie

do you want to build a snowman

If you’ve seen Disney’s animated movie “Frozen” — and even if you haven’t — you know two songs from the film: Oscar-winning“Let It Go” and the song any child who has seen the film knows by heart, “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?”

According to a new special airing on ABC Tuesday, Sept. 2, called “The Story of Frozen: Making a Disney Animated Classic,” everyone’s favorite snowman song nearly didn’t make it into the film’s final cut.

“Frozen” producer Peter Del Vecho reveals there was a screening of the film in February 2013 and “although the individual parts were strong and working, it just didn’t add up.”

Del Vecho says the “Do You Want To Build a Snowman?” segment was taken out at one point and was in and out of the film a few times.

Songwriter Robert Lopez recalls emails coming down the Disney chain of command asking why the song was missing from the film.

“It was not put back in the film until the witching hour before we released it,” says Kristen Bell, who voices Anna in the animated picture.

“Thankfully, at the very last moment, someone made the call of putting it back in,” she added. “I think it’s one of the best songs in the movie.”

"Frozen" went on to make more than $1.2 billion at theaters after it opened in theaters November 2013. The making of “Frozen” special will air on ABC Tuesday at 8 p.m.

An incredible amount of work goes into making "Game of Thrones" look as stunning as it does.

The Emmy Award-winning visual effects studio Rodeo FX released a new video compilation of their work on season 4 of the HBO series.

The mystery behind some of the glorious sweeping establishing shots have been revealed, and we get a good look at the full scope of how everything from landscapes to large armies is assembled on screen.

For example, this scene featuring Arya and the Hound shows the desolate wasteland lying in front of them is actually quite serene.

Daenerys' "unsullied" army was actually much smaller than it appeared. Most of the soldiers were added digitally.

This is how most of the scenes occur. Here, a post-production background made this white walker and his horse look much smaller.

One Huge Change In The 'Frozen' Story Line Helped Make It A Billion-Dollar Movie

frozen

It took Disney nearly 70 years to bring its most successful animated picture, "Frozen" to theaters.

Walt Disney tried adapting Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen" as early as the 1930s; however, he could never get the story quite right.

After the studio revisted the story in recent years, the resulting film was an instant hit in theaters making more than $1 billion to date.

But a new special on ABC, "“The Story of Frozen: Making a Disney Animated Classic,” reveals that one big change in the film could have cost the Mouse House its billion-dollar movie.

While the film revolves around two sisters, Queen Elsa and Princess Anna, early sketches show the two weren’t originally related. Anna was a peasant who asked an evil Snow Queen to freeze her broken heart.

Elsa's character looked completely different. She originally had light blue skin and short, spiky blue hair. She even had a coat made out of living weasels. elsa frozen sketches

anna elsa early sketch

"Elsa was going to be the complete antagonist," says director and screenwriter Jennifer Lee in the book "The Art of Frozen." "They kept calling her the 'villain.' But there came a point where we said, 'We can't use that word anymore.' You care about someone who's been forces to hide who they are. Elsa's not a villain, she just makes some bad choices because she's in a very difficult situation."

According to the ABC special, a big push for the character's redesign came from songwriter husband and wife duo Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez who were working on a song to go with the character.

"We were still writing a villain song and we started getting into the headspace of what you'd feel like if you were that isolated," says Anderson-Lopez.

"We knew in this moment that she would go through a transformation," said Lopez. "From repressed to letting her powers out ... trying to get away from society and be who she really was."

elsa let it go frozen

From there, "Let It Go" was born and Lee knew she had to rewrite the film's script to accommodate for the change in Elsa's character.

"The issue that kept coming up is, 'What do Anna and Elsa have to do with each other? Why does it matter, and how could it matter more?'" says Lee. "Someone in the room said, "What if they were sisters?"

Women from Disney Animation collaborated together in what was called a Sister Summit where they all discussed their own relationships growing up with sisters in order to strengthen the characters.

"Elsa became more the yin to Anna's yang, as opposed to the bad guy," Lee recalls in "The Art of Frozen."

frozen elsa annaIn the end, it was worth it. Instead of an Evil Queen, Elsa's character took on a more symbolic nature as a misunderstood individual who others could identify with.

And instead of delivering a predictable fairytale ending with the power of "true love's kiss," "Frozen" flipped Disney's traditional princess model on its head by emphasizing the importance of family over any potential romance. That theme and the bond between sisters Elsa and Anna helped make it a universal film in 2013.

Why You Won't See Any Reviews For The Biggest Game Of The Year Until Right Before It Comes Out

$

destiny sitting visuals

The most anticipated game of the year, "Destiny," is out in stores Tuesday, September 9, but don't expect to see reviews until early next week right before the game's release.

While 200 review copies of the game will be distributed by the end of this week, reviewers will have to wait until Monday to play the online-only video game because that's when the game's servers will go live.

When we found this out, we asked why we'll have to wait to test out the game until right before launch. Doesn't Bungie, the creators behind "Halo," want reviews of the game out before the game hits store shelves?

Of course. But they also want to make sure that those reviews are authentic to the actual gaming experience.

We were told that since a small number of people will have the game in their hands the online experience may not be the same as it will be at launch.

This makes sense.

A sample of roughly 200 people playing a game may not give the same overall impression as when thousands, tens of thousands, or even more are playing.

Our expectations while playing "Destiny" are that you'll be given the option to engage with a multitude of different players all over the world at any time much like in the previews of the game we tried out earlier this summer. If you have a small selection of people writing about their experience playing a game where you may or may not run into other players, early reviews may not express what it will actually be like playing the game when people are filling the servers from all over the world.

destiny visuals two people"Destiny" has been touted as having a game experience unlike any other as it will blend a first-person shooter with a massively multiplayer online game (MMO). Random in-game events planned and unplanned by developer Bungie will give the game a unique feel.

We'll have more on "Destiny" leading up to the game and after its release.

If you haven't already pre-ordered the game and can't decide whether to buy "Destiny" there are plenty of reviews of the Alpha and Beta previews that launched earlier this year.

Both were brief teasers of the game. A few of us in the Business Insider office have already checked out the Alpha and Beta and have thoroughlyenjoyed both.

If you were at a music festival in Michigan over the weekend, you may have been serenaded by Tom Hiddleston.

MTV reports the "Avengers" actor crashed the Wheatland Music Festival Saturday to take over the stage and perform a rendition of country singer Hank Williams' "Move It on Over."

It seems a bit random; however, the actor, best known for his role as Loki in the Marvel universe, is playing Williams in future biopic "I Saw the Light."

It looks like Hiddleston wanted to get a bit of practice in for the role.

You can watch a piece of the performance below as captured by one spectator.

Ever since Craig Ferguson announced in April that he will be departing CBS' "The Late Late Show," the rumor mill has been swirling as to who will replace him.

On Monday, CBS finally confirmed that reported frontrunner James Corden — a 35-year-old English actor, comedian, and writer — will officially be taking over for Ferguson.

“I can't describe how thrilled and honored I am to be taking over from the brilliant Craig Ferguson,” Corden said. “To be asked to host such a prestigious show on America's #1 network is hugely exciting. I can't wait to get started, and will do my very best to make a show America will enjoy.”

Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment, fully endorsed the network's pick, saying in a statement:

“James Corden is a rare entertainment force who combines irresistible charm, warmth and originality with a diverse range of creative instincts and performance talent. He is the ultimate multi-hyphenate – a writer, creator and performer who is loved and respected in every medium he touches, including theater, comedy, music, film and television. James is already a big star in the UK and he's wowed American audiences on Broadway; we're very excited to introduce his considerable and very unique talents to our network television audience on a daily basis.”

Corden, who won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor for his starring role in the Broadway play “One Man, Two Guvnors,” first rose to prominence in the UK as the co-creator, co-writer, and star of the BBC sitcom "Gavin & Stacey."

Corden had a supporting role in this summer’s 'Begin Again' starring Keira Knightley and leads the upcoming Disney musical 'Into the Woodsalongside Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep, opening this Christmas.

While Corden isn't a recognizable name in the U.S., he does boast more than 4.3 million Twitter followers, which could draw a younger audience to CBS.
