The Costumes At Burning Man Are Better Than Halloween

Burning Man Costumes

When it's nearly 100 degrees in the middle of the Nevada desert, clothing is limited, and sometimes even optional at Burning Man — "an annual art event and temporary community based on radical self expression in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada."

But for those who do choose to wear clothing, it's all about the costumes.

And the ornate outfits have become a huge part of the festival.

Bikinis, body paint, tutus, masks, headdresses, wigs, floral crowns and feathers  it's all there. Often all worn at once.

We attended the festival last year and documented what we saw...

Everyone used bikes to get around the Burning Man desert, but that didn't stop people from breaking out their best costumes.

Like this guy, who went all out in green.

Or this creative dog-in-a-cage costume.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Has Finally Chosen Which DC Comics Superhero He Will Play

0
0

dwayne the rock johnson black adam

It's official! Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is finally joining the DC Universe.

Johnson announced on Twitter that he will play antihero Black Adam in a future Warner Bros.' film.

Last month, the Associated Press reported that Johnson was up for two roles, that of superhero Shazam and his nemesis Black Adam.

Johnson has been vocal on Twitter about his involvement in a "Shazam" movie for some time. Back in March, the actor cited Black Adam as his favorite comic character, so it shouldn't be a big surprise he opted for the darker role.

For those unfamiliar with the characters, both are pretty similar to DC's other popular superhero, Superman

Shazam is actually a young boy named Billy Batson who can turn into a grown-up superhero as fast as he can say the word, you guessed it, Shazam. Upon speaking the word, he's bestowed with the powers of six Gods. Black Adam is an ancient Egyptian prince who once had the same powers as Baston but became consumed by his want for more power. As you could guess, he and Shazam aren't on the best of terms. Adam's basically bent on destroying Shazam.

In recent years, DC Comics' has rewritten the character as an antihero seeking to reclaim his name as opposed to a straight-out villain.

It's a smart move for Warner Bros. since Marvel has previously found success with its antihero character, Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston on screen. The "Thor" character has quickly become one of Marvel's most popular characters. An appearance by Hiddleston at last year's San Diego Comic-Con sent fans into a frenzy.

Variety reports Warner Bros. is already moving forward with a "Shazam" movie with Darren Lemke ("Jack the Giant Slayer") writing the script and Hiram Garcia ("Hercules") producing.

Warner Bros. has already registered a domain for ShazamMovie.com which redirects to a Warner Bros.' page.

It seems like a bit of a misstep for Warner Bros. who could have taken advantage of announcing the news at San Diego Comic-Con in July rather than allowing Johnson to break the news in a tweet.

Eva Longoria Says Apple Employees Reached Out After Stealing Her Private Contact Info

eva longoria 1Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton aren't the only ones to have their private information leaked.

Actress Eva Longoria, too, revealed on "Access Hollywood" today that she's been directly contacted by Apple employees who were able to access her personal information from company records.

“I’ve had a lot of problems with people breaking into my email, my Mac email,” Longoria told host Billy Bush. “Not hacked — just people get it from the stores, and I had a big problem with that.”

Longoria says Apple employees have contacted her after store visits, saying, “‘I made a dress, and I want to send it to you. I work at the Apple Store here in San Antonio.’ And I’m like… What? Did someone give out my email? Or my phone? ‘I saw your phone number from your profile, I just wanted to call and say hi, I’m a fan.’”

“There are a lot of privacy issues,” she added.

Apple — which claims in its privacy policy that "we communicate our privacy and security guidelines to Apple employees and strictly enforce privacy safeguards within the company" — did not respond to the show's request for comment.

Watch Longoria explain the creepy situation in her own words below (5:00):

Longoria’s allegations come after Apple’s iCloud system was hacked, resulting in dozens of stars having their private, nude photos leaked to the public.

Apple denies that the photo leak was a result of “any breach in any of Apple’s systems including iCloud or Find my iPhone.”

Jimmy Kimmel Creates Fake Apple Commercial Mocking Celebrity Photo Hacking Scandal

Jimmy Kimmel Live

Jimmy Kimmel mocked the massive celebrity phone hacking scandal on Tuesday's show.

He opened his monologue by joking, "I think you can tell how good or bad of a person you are based on how many seconds you wait to Google 'Jennifer Lawrence nude'  anything under 60, you're going to hell."

Kimmel continued that he feels like "the CEO of Apple should be forced to apologize in the nude" and thinks people who defend the hackers are ridiculous:

"Some people are making the argument that celebrities shouldn't have been storing pictures on their phones or computers, which is truly a silly thing to say. It's like if you mailed somebody a Polaroid, put a stamp on the letter, and someone at the post office opened it, made copies, and sent them around."

Kimmel's team went so far as to make a mock Apple commercial:

"You Love Apple products..."Jimmy Kimmel Live

"You use them to share your life..."Jimmy Kimmel Live selfie

"ALL of your life."Jimmy Kimmel Live

"And since you saved your photos to iCloud, we have them too and you can never delete them."Jimmy Kimmel live wine phone iphone

The Visual Effects In 'Game Of Thrones' Season 4 Are Mind-Blowing

Tyrion dancing, game of thrones

An incredible amount of work goes into making "Game of Thrones" look as stunning as it does.

The Emmy Award-winning visual effects studio Rodeo FX released a new video compilation of their work on season 4 of the HBO series.

The mystery behind some of the glorious sweeping establishing shots have been revealed, and we get a good look at the full scope of how everything from landscapes to large armies is assembled on screen.

For example, this scene featuring Arya and the Hound shows the desolate wasteland lying in front of them is actually quite serene.

Another sequence shows a city pop up right before Daenerys' eyes.

Daenerys' "unsullied" army was actually much smaller than it appeared. Most of the soldiers were added digitally.

It turns out Daenerys' view wasn't as spectacular in this shot overlooking a vast kingdom.

This is how most of the scenes occur. Here, a post-production background made this white walker and his horse look much smaller.

The battle sequences are particularly fun to watch come together, as these men on horseback look rather silly without the epic scenery added to the background.

Taylor Swift Had A Powerful Message For A Fan That Was Being Bullied

0

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is known for her personal and touching interactions with her fans on social media.

She responded to one Instagrammer's heartbreak  and another's unrequited crush this past summer, all with a genuine flair that seemed far from the hands of a publicist.

Now she's at it again, sending a heartfelt message to a bullied teen named Hannah, who had tagged Swift in a photo and told the story of how she was being picked on.

Here's the full Instagram comment:

Hannahhhh,
Reading this made me so sad because I love seeing you in your videos and photos being so happy and wide eyed, like the world isn't as harsh and unfair as it actually is. I hate thinking about your pretty face covered in tears, but I know why you're crying because I've been in your place. This isn't a high school thing or an age thing. It's a people thing. A life thing. It doesn't stop. It doesn't end or change.
People cut other people down for entertainment, amusement, out of jealousy, because of something broken inside them. Or for no reason at all. It's just what they do, and you're a target because you live your life loudly and boldly. You're bright and joyful and so many people are cynical. They won't understand you and they won't understand me.
But the only way they win is if your tears turn to stone and make you bitter like them. It's okay to ask why. It's okay to wonder how you could try so hard and still get stomped all over. Just don't let them change you or stop you from singing or dancing around to your favorite song.
You're going into high school this week and this is your chance to push the reset button on how much value you give the opinion of these kids, most of whom have NO idea who they are. I'm so proud of you and protective of you because you DO. If they don't like you for being yourself, be yourself even more.
Every time someone picks on me, I'll think of you in the hopes that every time someone picks on you, you'll think of me... and how we have this thread that connects us. Let them keep living in the darkness and we'll keep walking in the sunlight.
Forever on your side, Taylor.

Not surprisingly, Taylor fans are sharing the comment on Twitter like crazy.

Why You Won't See Any Reviews For The Biggest Game Of The Year Until Right Before It Comes Out

destiny sitting visuals

The most anticipated game of the year, "Destiny," is out in stores Tuesday, September 9, but don't expect to see reviews until early next week right before the game's release.

While 200 review copies of the game will be distributed by the end of this week, reviewers will have to wait until Monday to play the online-only video game because that's when the game's servers will go live.

When we found this out, we asked why we'll have to wait to test out the game until right before launch. Doesn't Bungie, the creators behind "Halo," want reviews of the game out before the game hits store shelves?

Of course. But they also want to make sure that those reviews are authentic to the actual gaming experience.

We were told that since a small number of people will have the game in their hands the online experience may not be the same as it will be at launch.

This makes sense.

A sample of roughly 200 people playing a game may not give the same overall impression as when thousands, tens of thousands, or even more are playing.

Our expectations while playing "Destiny" are that you'll be given the option to engage with a multitude of different players all over the world at any time much like in the previews of the game we tried out earlier this summer. If you have a small selection of people writing about their experience playing a game where you may or may not run into other players, early reviews may not express what it will actually be like playing the game when people are filling the servers from all over the world.

destiny visuals two people"Destiny" has been touted as having a game experience unlike any other as it will blend a first-person shooter with a massively multiplayer online game (MMO). Random in-game events planned and unplanned by developer Bungie will give the game a unique feel.

We'll have more on "Destiny" leading up to the game and after its release.

If you haven't already pre-ordered the game and can't decide whether to buy "Destiny" there are plenty of reviews of the Alpha and Beta previews that launched earlier this year.

Both were brief teasers of the game. A few of us in the Business Insider office have already checked out the Alpha and Beta and have thoroughlyenjoyed both.

NBC Is Paying For Matt Lauer's Helicopter Rides To Work From The Hamptons

matt lauer hamptons

After a turbulent past few years at the "Today" show, NBC is doing everything they can to keep host Matt Lauer happy.

According to PageSix, that includes flying him to and from the Hamptons during the week.

“NBC News chiefs want to do everything to keep Matt happy. They believe ‘Today’ has turned a corner and he is the key to its continuing success," a source told the Post. "They agreed to pay for his helicopter flights to the Hamptons and back, so he can spend more time with his family.”

Lauer owns a 40-acre horse farm in Water Mill and a nearby $15 million mansion, in which he lives year-round with his wife, Annette Roque, and their children.

The "Today" anchor previously told co-anchor Hoda Kotb that his life in the Hamptons is more normal than it sounds:

“I think the image that people have is that it’s all polo fields and cocktail parties. And the fact of the matter — my experience and Annette’s experience . . . is about parent-teacher conferences and Little League and music lessons.” He continued, “We have a painfully normal existence . . . We go to the local drugstore, and we walk the dog on the beach . . . and take pony-riding lessons . . . very much small-town America — it just happens to have a reputation and a name like the Hamptons.”

While NBC sources told The Post that chopper rides have been up to three times a week, an NBC rep insists: "On rare occasions, Matt will fly home, but most of the time you’ll find him stuck in traffic on the Long Island Expressway with everyone else.”

In June, Lauer extended his $20 million-a-year contract with NBC News to remain a “Today” co-host through 2016, following rumors that he would leave the show after how he was portrayed in the media following Ann Curry's 2012 departure.

Microsoft Will Give You The Most-Anticipated Game Of The Year For Free If You Buy A New Xbox One (MSFT)

0

destiny day time

Microsoft announced on Thursday a special promotion: If you buy an Xbox One between Sept. 7 and 13, you can get any game you want. For free.

That includes the highly anticipated "Destiny," which comes out on Sept. 9.

And that also includes the "Madden NFL 15" and "Forza Motorsport 5" bundles; you can choose a free game on top of the game that already comes with the Xbox.

Although Microsoft says "sky's the limit" in terms of choosing the game, there does seem to be a catch.

The deal doesn't include games that you've pre-ordered, so if you've already ordered "Destiny," you can still get any of the other hot games that are out there, such as "Titanfall" or "Watch Dogs."

Also, the deal is only good for brand-new Xbox Ones and games; refurbished consoles and used games aren't eligible.

If you were debating between buying a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One, this deal might be enough to push you to Microsoft's camp.

Microsoft is sure hoping it will. The Xbox One is still lagging way behind the PS4 in terms of sales.

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17 pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.

Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated.

My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.

joan rivers melissa rivers E! reported that the "Fashion Police" host was undergoing a minor endoscopic procedure when she was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition after going into cardiac arrest on Aug. 28.

Rivers remained at Mount Sinai where the New York Daily News reported she was on life support and later placed into a medically induced coma. Melissa Rivers previously released a statement to E! News saying her condition remained serious.

Joan Rivers Louis CK

Joan Rivers died today at the age of 81.

Working non-stop until the day she was hospitalized last week, Joan still appeared on TV sets almost daily, including a cameo on a 2011 episode of "Louie."

In the show, Louie debates quitting comedy until he meets Joan Rivers after a gig, and she convinces him otherwise.

Playing herself, Joan had some wise words on comedy being a calling, not just a job:

"I wish I could tell you it gets better, but it doesn't get better. YOU get better. You think it's easy? I've gone up, I've gone down, I've been bankrupt, I've been broke — but you do it. And you do it because we love it more than anything else. You want a real job, honey? There are a million things you can do, but what we do is not a job. What we do is a calling, we make people happy."

Louie is so inspired by Joan's words that he tries to passionately kiss her.

The short scene is worth a watch below:

Louis C.K. released a statement following Rivers' death:

“I feel very lucky that I knew Joan Rivers and I feel very sad that she’s gone.  She was a great comedian and a wonderful person. I never saw someone attack a stage with so much energy.  She was a controlled lightning bolt.  She was a prolific and unpredictable, joyful joke writer. She loved comedy.  She loved the audience. She was a great actress and should have done that more. She loved living and working. She was kind. She was real. She was brave. She was funny and you just wanted to be around her. I looked up to her.  I learned from her. I loved her. I liked her. And I already miss her very much. It really fucking sucks that she had to die all of a sudden.”

Joan Rivers died Thursday at the age of 81, but the topic was something that had been on her mind for a while.

In her 2013 book "I Hate Everyone ... Starting With Me," Joan jokingly addressed death, her will, and the glamorous funeral she hoped for:

Joan had some other great quotes on life and death:

  • "I've had so much plastic surgery, when I die they will donate my body to Tupperware."
  • "I enjoy life when things are happening. I don't care if it's good things or bad things. That means you're alive. Things are happening."
  •  "I have become my own version of an optimist. If I can't make it through one door, I'll go through another door—or I'll make a door. Something terrific will come no matter how dark the present."

A Buckingham Palace Guard Put On A Wild Show For Tourists, And The Army Isn't Pleased

Buckingham Guard

The guards outside Buckingham Palace are known for their incredible bearing, often standing for hours of post with nary a flinch.

But a recently discovered video uploaded to YouTube last month shows a lighter side to the Queen's Guards, as an unidentified soldier was filmed by tourists showing off some funky dance moves as he walked his post.

The video, which was uploaded Aug. 20, came with the caption: "Will Her Majesty be amused. A Buckingham Palace guardsman misbehaves on duty while The Queen is on holiday. His senior officer might be having a chat with him later…"

buckingham guardHer Majesty may, or may not, be amused. But the British Army sure isn't. According to The Guardian, the soldier is under investigation for the stunt. "We are aware of the video. Anyone who is found to fall short of the army's high standards can expect to face appropriate action," a spokesman told the paper.

The nearly 3:30 clip shows the soldier walking outside the Queen's palace along a wall near his sentry box, sometimes stopping to pick things up, at other times stopping with his foot in mid-air for a few seconds. At a couple of points, he even does some pirouettes, and tourists watching are quite amused.

"Have you seen them do that before?" a tourist asks in the video, as another responds: "It's just that one, he's messing around a bit."

Joan Rivers Once Considered Suicide But Here's What Stopped Her

joan rivers edgar rosenberg

In 1987, Joan Rivers' manager and husband of 22 years, Edgar Rosenberg, committed suicide after Fox fired them both following drama on "The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers."

Eight months later, Joan considered suicide herself.

In what would be her final big interview, the 81-year-old comedian opened up to The Daily Beast's Tim Teeman in July about the darkest period of her life and how she came out of it:

Joan Rivers Melissa Rivers funeral"Melissa wasn’t talking to me, my career was in the toilet, I’d lost my Vegas contracts, I’d been fired from Fox [where she had a talk show]. Carson and NBC [she had appeared on the Tonight Show for years] had put out such bad publicity about me. I was a pariah. I wasn’t invited anywhere. I was a non-person. At one point I thought, 'What’s the point? This is stupid.'

What saved me was my dog jumped into my lap. I thought, “No one will take care of him.” It wasn’t a friendly dog—only to me. I adored this dog. He was theoretically a Yorkie, his mother cheated. His name was Spike. He was the way you want your dog to be, devoted only to you. I was sitting in this big empty house in Bel Air, with a phone with five extensions which we no longer needed. I had the gun in my lap, and the dog sat on the gun. I lecture on suicide because things turn around. I tell people this is a horrible, awful dark moment, but it will change and you must know it’s going to change and you push forward. I look back and think, 'Life is great, life goes on. It changes.'"

"We were all down in the rubble, and he didn’t want to dig himself out," Joan says of her husband's suicide, which forced her back to work to earn a living.

"I understand it, and feel terribly sorry for him," she adds, "but I wonder if I’d be sitting here today talking to you if he had not killed himself, if we wouldn’t have ended up just a very bitter couple in a house on the hill somewhere."

David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, And Sarah Silverman Toast And Roast In Honor Of Joan Rivers

david letterman

The late night shows honored Joan Rivers last night after the 81-year-old comedian died Thursday.

In a heartfelt opening monologue, David Letterman called Joan "A real pioneer for other women looking for a career in comedy."

He continued by applauding Joan's work ethic and how she was always unapologetic:

"She worked about 300 dates a year, that's a lot of work and a lot of travel, and she was as funny today as she was when she first got into show business. Talk about guts, she would come out here and sit in this chair and say some things that were unbelievable, just where you would have to swallow pretty hard but they were hilarious. And she stood behind her jokes, and to my knowledge, would say these things and never apologize because her stance was, 'Hey, I'm a comedian, these are jokes, there are no victim-less jokes' and she was harder on herself than anybody."

"She was just a money making machine," Letterman exclaimed, "She had a line of jewelry she sold on QVC. She sold 12 best-selling books! I haven't even read 12 books."

Watch the full monologue below:

Jimmy Kimmel had Sarah Silverman on his show to pay tribute to Joan.

Silverman, who says the late comedian "was a hero to me and I loved her very much," also said that her friend was taken too soon, despite her age.

"I think a lot of people, when they die at 81, you go, 'Well, she was 81 she had an amazing life,' but she wasn't done! I mean, I tuned into 'Fashion Police' every Friday because it's the most hardcore jokes on TV and you can't believe she's saying them," said the 41-year-old comedian.

Silverman then roasted Kimmel in honor of Joan, saying, "I know if she were here she would want us to be funny and she would probably want me to say, 'Nice tie. Who made it, Calvin Clown?' and 'I love your hair. You have to tell me where you bought it.'"

9 Career Quotes From Joan Rivers On How To Be Successful

joan rivers quote

Joan Rivers passed away at the age of 81 Thursday following complications from a minor procedure last week.

While the sprightly comic is often viewed as a pioneer for female comediennes, Rivers herself disagreed, telling PBS in 2013 that she was still always “looking for the new frontier.”

Rivers may have ruffled a lot of feathers over the years; however, there's no denying the Brooklyn native wasn't afraid to speak her mind.

While Rivers had many funny one-liners, the woman who never stopped working also gave a lot of advice on success. We've compiled some of Rivers' best quotes highlighting lessons that helped her break into the business.

Love what you do.

“I’m very blessed to be a workaholic. Anyone that’s successful has to love their work and not say, ‘Oh, it’s 5 o’clock. Thank God.’ You’ve got to go, ‘5 o’clock already? Well, maybe another hour or two.’”

(NBC, “Today” 1986)

Don't be afraid to speak up.

“I succeeded by saying what everyone else is thinking.”

(via ABC)

Never settle for rejection.

"My whole career has been one rejection after another and then going back and back and pushing against everything and everybody. Getting ahead by small, ugly steps.”

(People, 1978)

Joan Rivers Describes Her Perfect Day In New York City

joan rivers nycJoan Rivers was a true New Yorker.

Born Joan Alexandra Molinsky to Russian immigrants in Brooklyn in 1933, Rivers — a stage name later taken from her first agent, Tony Rivers — always returned to her east coast roots, even after her career brought her to Hollywood.

Vulture's Jennifer Vineyard spoke to Rivers last year and earlier this year "about her childhood in, and favorite parts of, New York."

We pulled our favorite bit from "Joan Rivers' Sweet Ode To New York City" below:

New York has so many opportunities. You want to be an artist, it's there. You want to go into publishing, it's there. You want to do fashion, it's there. New York gives a child choices; it's not a one-horse town. It's not like Houston: You go into oil, or you don't go into anything. Life is an adventure, and New York is the place to have it. I tape Fashion Police in Los Angeles, and I'm on the red eye home Friday nights because I want the weekend in New York.

This is my ideal day. Saturday morning: I love to get up to go to a museum. I always take a taxi, and only open the door into the bike lane. Because I love to see how many Citi Bike riders I can pick off. I love to spend mornings at MoMA, where I eat M&Ms and I sneeze on Jackson Pollocks, just to see who can tell. I try to get to a Mets game if they're in town, because they have a great ticket plan: If you buy one, you get one free; if you buy two, they let you pitch.

There's nothing like Broadway at night, and I try to go to Mamma Mia! if possible, because I like to watch 15,000 Japanese tourists in the audience trying to sing "Waterloo." If you don't go to Broadway, you're a fool. On Broadway, off Broadway, above Broadway, below Broadway, go! Don't tell me there isn't something wonderful playing. If I'm home in New York at night, I'm either at a Broadway or an Off Broadway show. We're in the theater capital of the world, and if you don't get it, you're an idiot.

Joan concluded the essay with, "I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm never bored in this city."
