Bryan Cranston And Aaron Paul Made Each Other Tear Up During Their Emmy Acceptance Speeches

Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston may have one of the best relationships both onscreen and off.

Throughout five seasons of "Breaking Bad," the unlikely pairing of a chemistry teacher and his student brought out the best and worst in each other as they schemed, argued, and fought both verbally and physically with each other and their foes.

At the end of the day, the two characters had a deep respect for one another. It's a respect that carried off screen into real life as the two have become close friends.

So as both went to accept their Emmy awards Monday evening, thanking their families, friends, creator Vince Gilligan, and the cast and crews, it wasn't a surprise the two took a moment to recognize the bond they formed on the AMC show.

If you were a fan of the series, it was hard to not get teary eyed yourself. After all, both of the actors were misty-eyed themselves.

Paul took the stage first winning his third Emmy for playing Jesse Pinkman, a misguided junkie who thrived under the wing of his former teacher Mr. White despite an often polarizing relationship between the two.aaron paul emmy speech

"Bryan, there’s not a single day that goes by that I do not miss running to work to be able to work opposite of you, my friend. I’ve learned so much on screen and off. Thank you."

Not to be outdown, Cranston later took the stage winning the Outstanding Lead Actor Emmy. It was his fourth win for portraying chemistry-teacher-turned-drug lord White.bryan cranston emmy speech

After getting through the majority of his speech, Cranston's tone changed when speaking about Paul.

"My dear friend Aaron Paul. I love you so much. You were with me all the way and I appreciate that, and helping each other."

The two are usually known for clowning around and taking playful photos with each other at red carpets and awards ceremonies celebrating the series.

Last year, Paul photobombed Cranston on the Emmy red carpet.

10 Incredible 'Super Mario Bros.' Cheats You’ve Been Missing Out On For Decades

Super Mario Bros. cross stitch

I spent hours playing "Super Mario Bros." as a kid.

My favorite memory is of me and my friends trying so hard to get unlimited lives at the end of World 3-1

But that's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to awesome cheats in the game.

Of course, some of these gems are more glitches than actual cheats. But that doesn't make them any less awesome.

Shoot fire balls as small Mario.

At the end of any level, try to get hit by Bowser while also touching the ax at the same time. In the next level, you'll get a mushroom instead of a fire flower, which will make you small. The next time you find a fire flower, you'll stay small, but you'll have fire power!

(Via Cheat-Database)

Keep playing after the "Game Over" screen.

If you die and want to keep playing, but don't want to start all the way back at World 1-1, you're in luck. When you get back to the Player 1 or 2 screen after Game Over, hold the A button and hit Start. You'll then be taken back to the beginning of the world you died in. So if you die in World 3-3, you'll be taken back to World 3-1.

Minus world.

There's a glitch at the end of World 1-2 that takes you to what people lovingly refer to as "Minus World." At the end of the level, when you get to the pipe and bricks, stand on the edge of the pipe while ducking and facing the left. Jump to the right and try not to break the block that's directly next to the pipe. If you do it correctly, you'll slide right through the bricks and end up in a Warp Zone level. Go into the first pipe you see, and you'll be ferried away to World -1.

There's nothing really to do in the level but swim around (it's a water level). Once you get to the end, you go through a pipe that takes you back to the beginning.

As Transmission Zero points out, the level isn't really called -1. It's actually World 36-1, but the 36 doesn't actually show up. Also, the level is identical to World 7-2. A strange glitch indeed!

But it wasn't just a goodbye after seven years on the air, it was also an intervention.

McCormack, an actress and Handler's BFF, started by joking about that the comedian's move to Netflix is code for rehab:

"I urge you to get help. So if you have to tell the world that you're 'going to Netflix' for a little while, I think everyone supports you and everyone will understand. Netflix is a wonderful facility where you will be able to get all the help you need. So, if you want, Jen, Sandy, and I have arranged a plane to take you to Netflix as soon as the show wraps tonight."

Jennifer Aniston followed up by exclaiming:

"Chelsea, you steal everything I do! I went to Cabo, you went to Cabo. I introduce you to my yoga teacher, you stole my yoga teacher! I got a knee injury, you got a knee injury. I cut my hair, you cut your hair."Jennifer Aniston chelsea lately

Then it was Sandra Bullock's turn for the friend intervention:

"After you made me clean out your office today, I came across some items that both horrified and made me concerned for your overall well being. 'Jessica Jones' Is Next Marvel Netflix Series After 'Daredevil'

It's interesting that we've yet to hear any names in regards to the casting of Jessica Jones, a role that seems ripe for at least a few rumors or fan speculation. It may not be too long before we learn who is playing this superhero, as Netflix plans to make Jessica Jones it's next Marvel series after Daredevil.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos revealed that Jessica Jones is starting to heat up as Daredevil continues shooting on location in New York.

While he reveals that casting is underway on the next Marvel Netflix Series, he doesn't say much else, as he is always under the watchful eye of Marvel Studios:

"Right now, the writers' rooms are open and they're looking at casting Jessica. If you sense some hesitation in my voice, that's classic Marvel fashion. They like to keep that veil of secrecy. But Daredevil is already shooting, since that's out first. Eventually the series will run very close together. You can then have a separate season where the characters will cross over."

The plan is for all four Marvel Netflix series, which includes DaredevilJessica JonesIron Fist and Luke Cage, to eventually culminate in The Defenders miniseries.

While Guardians of the Galaxy presented a more colorful, fun comic book adventure on the big screen, don't look for the Marvel Netflix series to follow suite. While they do take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity, they will be a darker affair. Daredevil is setting the tone in the Hell's Kitchen district, and promises to be grittier than the movie based on the comic book.

"The series will not be afraid to go darker than the film did. What we love about this particular set of heroes is that they're a little more down to Earth. Costume wise and also in that these are gritty crime stories, more in the streets than in the clouds."

jessica jones marvelJessica Jones is a fairly new character in the Marvel comic book universe, having debuted in 2001. She once had a crush on Peter Parker, and was present when he was bitten by the radioactive spider that gave him his powers. Soon after that infamous incident, the high school girl was involved in a car accident that killed the rest of her family. The collision involved a military convoy carrying radioactive chemicals, and after spending several months in a coma, she awoke, later discovering that her radiation exposure gave her super strength, limited invulnerability, and flight (which she never fully mastered during her superhero career).

While her origins are closely tied with Spider-Man, it's unlikely that Peter Parker will be mentioned by name in the series. It is not known what age she will be portrayed as in the TV show, with her look changing throughout the comic books. Jessica Jones is also married to Luke Cage in the comic books, but its not known if The Defenders will go down this road.

Who do you want to see as Jessica Jones on the small screen? Should she be played by a new comer?

Fans Defy Kate Bush And Post Video Of Her First Concert In 35 Years On YouTube

$

kate bushKate Bush gave her first concert in 35 years last night at the Hammersmith Odeon in London and she had one strict instruction for the fans who have waited across four calendar decades for her reappearance live on stage: No one was to use a mobile phone or film the performance.

Specifically, no iPhones or iPads.

But ... someone did. A video of part of her performance has already appeared on YouTube.

On her website prior to her epic 22-night, barefoot stand at the Odeon, the 56-year-old singer — best known for "Wuthering Heights" and "Running Up That Hill" — begged her fans to leave their phones off during the show:

I have a request for all of you who are coming to the shows :

We have purposefully chosen an intimate theatre setting rather than a large venue or stadium. It would mean a great deal to me if you would please refrain from taking photos or filming during the shows. I very much want to have contact with you as an audience, not with iphones, ipads or cameras. I know it's a lot to ask but it would allow us to all share in the experience together.

The "Bush iPhone ban" request sparked a national debate in Britain about the generation of people who grew up with mobile devices and whether you can really be "present" or "in the moment" if you're constantly trying to film or photograph what you're doing. Artists have complained repeatedly about fans with phones.

The Guardian reported that her fans strictly adhered to Bush's request and no phones were to be seen.

But singer Lily Allen couldn't resist — she even published a photo from the gig on Instagram.

Someone else went even further. Here, for those of you who couldn't get tickets, is what Bush looks like 35 years after "Wuthering Heights" — a hit when she was 19 — at the Odeon last night, singing "Cloud Busting":

Why 'Modern Family' Keeps Winning Emmys Over Better Shows

$
0
0

modern family emmys ABC's "Modern Family" won its fifth-consecutive Emmy for Best Comedy Series on Monday night, joining "Frasier" (1994-1998) as the only comedy to win so many in a row.

But does the show really deserve its status as a five-time Best Comedy Series champ?

"Modern Family" wasn't even on the radar for most critics guessing Emmy winners, as FX's "Louie" and controversial Netflix comedy entry "Orange is the New Black" (it's a drama, right?) were expected to take top honors.

But after Netflix made history last year by being the first non-TV network to win an award (three awards, to be exact), perhaps Emmy voters got scared that streaming sites would take their viewers and their accolades. Even Seth Meyers poked fun at Netflix's dominance in his opening monologue of the night.

Perhaps voters also preferred to stick with a network selection over cable competition, which also included HBO's "Silicon Valley" and "Veep."

Emmy voters are members of The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, who have applied and been approved by a "peer group." Those accepted include actors, casting directors, producers, directors, and tons of behind-the-scenes people who have been in the 'biz for a very long time and likely want to see network television prevail.

Emmy voters quickly recognized "Modern Family" as a safe choice.

When the show first premiered in 2009, it quickly had mass appeal. Combining three family units including a gay couple with an adopted daughter, an older man with a hot Colombian wife, and a traditional suburban family — it was like "8 Simple Rules" meets "Three's Company" mixed with some "George Lopez."

modern family promo poster season oneAfter two seasons, the show had a combination of 33 Emmy nods and 11 wins.

By 2012, it was so popular that NBC tried — and failed — to duplicate its success with look-alike show "The New Normal."

But already the "Modern" characters were starting to feel stale to some critics.

"As 'Modern Family' has gotten older, its characters, and their dynamics, have settled into grooves, some more discordant than others," Salon's Willa Paskin wrote in 2012.

Meanwhile, where storylines in older episodes would tie together brilliantly, some new episodes feature disappointingly unconnected plot lines. They also feel increasingly formulaic.

That's why the latest Emmy win generated tweets like this (from Buzzfeed's entertainment editor and a filmmaker):

The viewership for the series, while still high, isn't as large as it once was. The ratings for "Modern Family" by its season average nearly make a bell curve.

modern family ratings by season average

A look at fan reception of every episode to date shows a gradual decline in viewer interest. The series hits a low note near the end of season 4.

Via Graph TV:

modern family audience receptionmodern family reviews

Despite the recent slump, the series' most positively reviewed episode actually came this past season when the family took a trip to Las Vegas. Taking the family out of their normal setting invigorated the episode, and all the storylines come together for a more satisfying end that was reminiscent of the show's earlier seasons.

That's probably why the episode won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. "Las Vegas" and the positive reception of one other stand-out episode from season 5 titled "Message Received" may have helped Emmy voters give it a win.

This is not the only time the Emmy's has awarded a show that's past its prime.

Just look at how long "Two and a Half Men" kept winning Emmys after its prime. While fan ratings and TV ratings plunged after Charlie Sheen left in season 9, that didn't stop the show from receiving 14 more Emmys nominations, with co-star Jon Cryer receiving four more nominations and securing two wins.

More often than not, when it comes to comedies, the Emmys play it safe giving the awards to a network TV show over cable. Since the Emmys' inception there has only been one time a cable channel has won the Outstanding Comedy series. That honor is held by HBO, as "Sex and the City" won Best Comedy in 2001.

Even if the Emmys are playing favorites with "Modern Family," the ABC show is not as popular as it once was with the Awards' show. The amount of Emmy nominations the series has received and won over the years has slowly been on the decline.

Microsoft Thinks Customers Will Spend $150 On A Standalone Kinect (MSFT)

two people playing Xbox 360 kinect

Earlier this summer, Microsoft stripped its Kinect motion controller from the Xbox One, effectively dropping the price of its fledgling console by $100 in the process. But if you’re hoping to get a standalone version of the Kinect, Microsoft announced Wednesday that it will release the sensor as a separate device on Oct. 7.

Microsoft says the standalone Kinect will cost $149. So if you happened to buy the Xbox One bundle with Kinect earlier this year for $499, congratulations — you saved yourself an extra $50. Now, the console retails for $399, so buying an additional Kinect would bring your purchase total to ~$550.

xbox one kinect sensor

The original Kinect for Xbox 360 (codenamed “Project Natal”) debuted in January 2010, but when it finally launched in North America that November, the peripheral cost $149 — the same as how much the new sensor will cost in October. But despite misgivings about the price, Microsoft sold 8 million Kinect units in just two months, which is a world record for the “fastest selling gaming peripheral.”

A year and a half after the first Kinect debuted, Microsoft decided to drop its price by $40, which might mean the Kinect for Xbox One could see a similar price cut in a year or two.

The new Xbox One Kinect will come with a free copy of “Dance Central,” which will retail for only $10. That means Microsoft values the standalone Kinect at about $140.

It’s interesting that Microsoft has priced the new Kinect so high, considering it needed to basically orphan the accessory so the Xbox One could better compete with Sony’s PlayStation 4, which absolutely pummeled Microsoft in sales over the past quarter.

But when Microsoft originally unveiled its Xbox One last year, the company held up the second-generation Kinect as a major cornerstone of the new Xbox experience. With the new Kinect, gamers could activate their Xbox One by talking to it, and also switch between apps, snap features to one side or another, or record your gameplay. Just check out this old promotional video and you can see how central the Kinect was to the original Xbox One campaign.

We’ll know if gamers have warmed up to Microsoft’s standalone sensor when the $149 accessory hits shelves in October.

Here's What Happens When Someone Calls A SWAT Team On You As A Prank

kootra swatting

A gamer using the Twitch video service apparently caught the moment an armed police SWAT team burst through his office door while searching for an active shooter in Littleton, Colorado on Wednesday.

Officers were conducting a search of office buildings after receiving a phone call about a shooter, but now suspect the report was false, according to The Denver Channel. As one man found out — a gamer named Jordan Mathewson who plays under the pseudonym "Kootra" — the search may have been the result of a prank known as "Swatting."

"Uh oh, this isn't good," he says in the video, which is on YouTube. "They're clearing rooms. What in the world? I think we're getting swatted."

"Swatting" is a prank often used by cybercriminals to harass a target, by reporting nefarious activity like a hostage situation or active shooter at a person's location with the goal of getting a police SWAT team to respond and arrest them. It's not exactly a lighthearted prank, as sending in armed police officers who think they may encounter an armed suspect can be very dangerous.

At the time, Mathewson was playing the online first-person shooter game "Counterstrike" and streaming it live as others watched him on Twitch. The video was apparently captured inside the offices of The Creatures LLC, where police officers burst through the door with weapons aimed at him and order him to the ground.

He is handcuffed and searched. After finding nothing, officers pick him and let him sit in a chair and question him. Aside from the office building where Mathewson was, schools and other businesses in the Littleton area were placed on lockdown for about 30 minutes, The Denver Channel reported.

Mathewson tweeted after it was all over:

'Hello Kitty' Is Actually Not A Cat

Don't be deceived by her name or pointy ears. Hello Kitty is NOT a cat, according to the company that owns the cartoon, Sanrio.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, a Hello Kitty trend expert and anthropologist Christine Yano, who has spoken with Sanrio, says she was told sternly not to confuse Hello Kitty with a cat. While preparing a script about Hello Kitty for a big conference, Sanrio set Yano straight.

From LA Times:

When Yano was preparing her written texts for the exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum, she says she described Hello Kitty as a cat. "I was corrected — very firmly," she says. "That's one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it's called Charmmy Kitty."

Other things Yano has learned about Hello Kitty: The cartoon's real name is "Kitty White," and she is British with a twin sister, according to a backstory Sanrio and the cartoon's creator, Yuko Shimizu, made about her. She's also a perpetual third-grader.

Yano explains some of the backstory to LA Times:

A lot of people don't know the story and a lot don't care. But it's interesting because Hello Kitty emerged in the 1970s, when the Japanese and Japanese women were into Britain. They loved the idea of Britain. It represented the quintessential idealized childhood, almost like a white picket fence. So the biography was created exactly for the tastes of that time."

BioShock, Big Daddy and Little Sister

"Bioshock," one of the most highly regarded games of the last decade, has finally arrived on iPhone and iPad.

The original "Bioshock," first released in 2007, was praised for its engaging narrative and its beautifully eerie underwater setting of Rapture, a utopia turned horrifying nightmare.

The first-person shooter thrusts you into the 1960's world of cold-hearted objectivist Andrew Ryan, the man responsible for Rapture's creation. When your hero first enters the city, you learn that the citizens of Rapture have since devolved, like the environment itself, which is now teeming with genetically modified Splicers, creepy Little Sisters, and their iconic guardians, the legendary Big Daddies.

It's your job to escape.

The iPhone and iPad version of the game is a full port of the original game and will feature Bluetooth controller support, which will offer a more familiar experience than the alternate touch-screen controls.

You can download Bioshock for $14.99 over at the App Store.

Friends

The hit sitcom "Friends" has been off the air for over 10 years now, but it lives on thanks to its many syndication deals with various network channels.

Jennifer Aniston, while on Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show Wednesday, showed up only to be told by Kimmel that he had prepared some "Friends fan fiction" for the two of them to read out loud.

Aniston told him she had no idea what he meant.

"Well like, say if it was 'Star Wars,' you'd write a script and then maybe work yourself into it, like in this case, I'm Ross," Kimmel explained.

He then led her over to an exact replica of the set from the show:

Friends Jimmy Kimmel

They begin reading the lines and Aniston is fed up (though it all seems to be part of the shtick of course).

She also refuses to wear "The Rachel" wig Kimmel offers her, a throwback to the iconic '90s hairstyle.

Jennifer Aniston

Then, surprise! Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow show up to read their lines.

Kimmel says in his script, "Joey and Chandler are dead." Aniston truly looks as if she doesn't want to be there, but it's hilarious — and always fun — to experience a "Friends" throwback.

Then, the women sang-talked the lyrics to the "Friends" theme.

The video service will debut all 10 episodes of new drama series "Transparent" on September 26.

Netflix's model for debuting new shows like "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black" has always been to release all episodes of a new season at once to allow fans to binge-watch. While the idea seemed unorthodox at first, it's a model that has proved successful as both series have been nominated for — and subsequently won— Primetime Emmys.

"Transparent" follows Jeffrey Tambor ("Arrested Development") as he reintroduces himself as a woman to his family. The show is written and directed by Jill Soloway (producer and writer of "Six Feet Under") and also stars Judith Light ("Dallas") and Gaby Hoffmann ("Girls").

In the past, Amazon has introduced new series through a pilot season where the first episode of a new show debuts on Amazon Prime Instant Video. The show’s future is determined by viewer feedback.

Amazon hasn’t tossed away this format. Starting Thursday, the service introduced pilot episodes for five new comedies and dramas on its site including "The Cosmopolitans," "Really," "Red Oaks," and hour-long dramas "Hand of God" and "Hysteria."

When we asked a spokesperson why Amazon is taking a different approach with the release of "Transparent," we were told Amazon is "experimenting with different release models for their shows."

The first episode is available now to watch on Prime.

'Sopranos' Creator David Chase Backtracks, Tony Soprano May Be Dead After All

Widely circulated reports that Tony Soprano may be alive after all, are not exactly true.

On Wednesday, Vox published a feature on the topic of whether or not the "Sopranos" protagonist is still alive after the HBO series' vague ending in 2007.

In Vox's article, writer Martha P. Nochimson recalled a conversation with series creator David Chase, in which she allegedly asked him, “Is Tony Soprano dead?”

“He shook his head ‘no.’ And he simply said, ‘No, he isn't,'” Nochimson wrote.

But now Chase's representative is denying the report, saying that her client's comments have been “misconstrued.”

“A journalist for Vox misconstrued what David Chase said in their interview. To simply quote David as saying, ‘Tony Soprano is not dead,’ is inaccurate. There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true. As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, ‘Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.’ To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. The final scene of ‘The Sopranos’ raises a spiritual question that has no right or wrong answer.”

In the Vox interview, Chase does reveal that the series' finale was inspired by the Edgar Allan Poe poem "A Dream Within a Dream," about struggling to say goodbye to a loved one as grains of sand pass through his fingers.

"What more can I say?" Chase asked.

This isn't the first time Chase has addressed the mysterious finale, which ends abruptly with Tony Soprano sitting in a café, looking up at the entrance to the sound of an ominous jingling bell.

During a Q&A at a "Sopranos" screening in April, Chase said the ending "was meant to make you feel, not to make you think."

Actor James Gandolfini, who played Tony Soprano, died last June.

9 Examples Of WWE CEO Vince McMahon's Insane Work Ethic

Vince McMahon with crazy feather women

World Wrestling Entertainment majority owner, chairman, and CEO Vince McMahon grew up in an 8-foot-wide trailer in North Carolina, where he did not meet his father, a wrestling promoter, until the age of 12.

From those humble origins, McMahon, who turned 69 earlier this week, rose to become the head of a billion-dollar company. In growing WWE from the regional organization it was when he took over to the global empire it is today, McMahon has relied on an incredible work ethic that is unmatched in the wrestling business.

For more than three decades, he has lived, breathed, and sometimes bled WWE, both in the boardroom and on television, where he plays a fictionalized version of himself.

He doesn't believe in sickness.

Employees feeling under the weather while working at WWE are unlikely to get much sympathy from the company's CEO.

Former WWE creative team members Vince Russo and David Lagana both write that McMahon has been known to tell glassy-eyed employees that "there is no such thing as sick."

"Vince is a workaholic, and if anything gets in the way of his work, it makes him angry," Lagana writes.

It was impossible to beat him into the office in the morning or outlast him at night.

Vince Russo, who worked for McMahon as the then-WWF's head writer during the company's late '90s boom period, recalls that McMahon basically lived at the company's Stamford, Connecticut, office.

If Russo got in at 7 a.m., McMahon's car would already be there, and if he stayed until 10 p.m., McMahon's car would still be there.

"In other words — the guy just never left the office!!!" Russo writes in a piece for What Culture.

He barely ever sleeps.

In a 2012 interview, McMahon tells Bloomberg Businessweek that he sleeps just four hours a night.

"I don't like to sleep," McMahon says. "I'm missing something when I'm sleeping."
