Emmy nominee Sarah Silverman "bonded" with Giuliana Depandi in what had to be the most hilarious pre-show interview of the night.

After complimenting Sarah's dress, which she claims was designed by "Marni, the character from Girls," Giuliana opened Sarah's clutch to reveal not only her phone, but also a marijuana vaporizer pen that Sarah proudly presented. "This is my pot. It's liquid pot."

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Veep

Julia Louis-Dreyfus did it again — the actress received another Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

Last year, Louis-Dreyfus broke records with her fourth Emmy win for "Veep" and surpassed Lucille Ball's record for 13 nominations, making her the most-nominated comedic actress in Emmy history. She also became the only actress to net three wins for three seperate comedy series ("Veep", "Seinfeld," and "The New Adventures of Old Christine.")

This year, Louis-Dreyfus once again takes home the award for her portrayal of Selina Meyer on the HBO series, beating out "Orange is the New Black" star Taylor Schilling as well as Amy Poehler, Edie Falco, Melissa McCarthy, and Lena Dunham.

"Veep" has won an Emmy every year it has been nominated.

Stefani's flub wasn't the only memorable moment — capitalizing on the joke, Jimmy Fallon took to the stage and acknowledged the mispronunciation, insisting that there must have been some mistake.

Colbert kept the gag going by dictating the rest of his speech into Fallon's ear, including a curse word that censors caught in time.

Colbert still had time to top it off with a heartfelt, out-of-character speech as he accepted the award.

Billy Crystal Pays Tribute To Robin Williams During Emmys 'In Memoriam'

Monday night's Emmy Awards In Memoriam segment started with a live rendition of "Smile," performed by Sara Bareilles.

While Peter O'Toole, Lauren Bacall, James Garner, Maya Angelou, and many others were all honored, the segment ended with Robin Williams, who died earlier this month.

Williams' longtime friend Billy Crystal eulogized the late actor, saying: "He made us laugh hard, every time you saw him... I spent many hours on stage with Robin and the brilliance was astounding. His relentless energy was thrilling. I used to think if I could just put a saddle on him and stay on for eight seconds I would do okay."

Crystal then told a funny story about going to a baseball game with Williams:

whoopi goldberg robin william billy crystalRobin, Whoopi, and I were once in Shea Stadium, in the broadcast booth with the great Tim McCarver. It was comic-relief day for the New York Mets. Robin knew nothing about baseball. I asked him, "What's your favorite team?" And he said, 'The San Franciscoes.' So he was a little lost in the conversation, so I got an idea and I said, "You know, Tim, we have a great Russian baseball player with us." I looked over, his eyes got all bright, his ears perked up like he was a little dog that was inside all day and the master came and said, "Hey, you want to go for a walk?" So I said, "What's baseball like in Russia?" Without missing a beat, he said, "Well, we've only got one team: the Reds." Well, the next pitch, the batter fouled one off and it came screaming back at us, we ducked down, it slammed against the wall. Robin turned around and bounced it into his hands, and then he stood up and screamed, "I love America. I'm going to defect."

billy crystal emmys

"He could be funny anywhere," Crystal continued. "We were such great friends that he would come to all of our family functions, weddings, Bar Mitzvahs... and he would sit with my older, immigrant relatives like he was just one of the guys. And he would tell them about his journey from his little shtetl in Poland to America. One uncle of mine said, 'I came to America after World War II and I hitchhiked.' Robin responded, 'I waited until there was a 747 and a Kosher meal.'"

"As genius as he was on stage, he was the best friend you could ever imagine: supportive, protective, loving," added Crystal, getting emotional. "It's very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in all of our lives."

"For almost 40 years, he was the brightest star in the comedy galaxy," said Crystal. "But while some of the brightest of our celestial bodies are actually extinct now, their energy long since cooled, but miraculously, because they float in the heavens so far away from us now, their beautiful light will continue to shine on us forever. And the glow will be so bright, it'll warm your heart, it'll make your eyes glisten, and it'll make you think to yourselves: Robin Williams, what a concept."

A BBC Show Won The Most Emmys This Year

benedict cumberbatch sherlock

Sure, "Breaking Bad" may have dominated the Primetime Emmy broadcast Monday night; however, it was a BBC show that won the most Emmys this year.

"Sherlock," starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as the detective extraordinaire and Dr. Watson, respectively, took home a total of seven Emmy Awards in total.

Best Cinematography for a Miniseries or Movie
Best Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie, Or Dramatic Special
Best Single-Camera Editing for a Miniseries or Movie
Best Sound Editing for a Miniseries, Movie, or Dramatic Special
Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries or Movie, Benedict Cumberbatch
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie, Martin Freeman
Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie, or a Dramatic Special, Steven Moffat

This isn't the first time the series has been nominated.  Previously, the first two seasons received 17 Primetime Emmy nods; however, it never won once.

When series three began airing, it picked up in popularity, returning to record ratings overseas and in the U.S. When this year's Emmys were announced, "Sherlock" received 12 nominations.

You can catch up with "Sherlock" on Netflix now; however, as a fan, I strongly advise against binge-watching the series until it's close to returning or you'll be left wanting more.

Netflix Was Completely Shut Out At The Emmys

Netflix earned a record 31 Emmy nominations this year, but the internet streaming giant went home empty-handed during the Emmy Awards ceremony Monday evening.

A few of its actors were up for big awards, including Kevin Spacey for Best Actor in "House of Cards" and Taylor Schilling for Best Actress in "Orange is the New Black."

Instead, many of the wins went to "Breaking Bad," during its final Emmy run, and ABC's long-winning comedy "Modern Family."

During the Emmy's Creative Arts Awards held Aug. 16, Netflix did take home seven awards including one for sound mixing ("House of Cards") and another three for "Orange is the New Black."

Netflix's big winner was actually documentary "The Square" which won four awards.

Last year, Netflix surprised many people by winning three awards, including a Best Directing win for David Fincher on "House of Cards."

At the end of the day, the stars can still go home happy without a trophy.

Kevin Spacey is making a reported $500,000 per episode for "House of Cards", while Schilling is making $35,000 per episode for "Orange is the New Black," according to TV Guide.

The Comic Book Industry Is On Fire, And It's About More Than Just The Movies

$

captain america infinity gauntlet

Domestic sales of comics and graphic novels have been rising for years, reaching $870 million last year, up from $265 million in 2000, according to estimates by Comichron’s John Jackson Miller and ICv2’s Milton Griepp. This year could be even hotter, with July breaking all kinds of records for sales since 1997. Astonishingly, even the number of comic shops in America has been stable or growing in recent years.

Rising revenue can be attributed partly to growth in graphic novels and digital comics, as well as higher prices, but it's also clear that readership is expanding.

Last year's 85 million print unit sales for the top 300 comic books was the highest number since 2007, and that does not count increasingly significant graphic novel and digital sales nor a growing number of sales beyond the top 300. Even though total unit sales remain lower than during peaks in the 1950s or early 1990s, according to Miller, the comic book business is booming.

comic-con maitland wardOne obvious reason for comic book gains is spillover interest from the movies adaptations that have dominated the box office in the past decade. In 2014 alone, there will be at least 12 comic book movies on the big screenThese adaptations have brought in not only new readers but also new types of readers.

"The movies have helped expand the audience beyond the core young adult male demographic to include females of similar ages, as well as older and younger readers," Griepp writes by email. "That’s based on what comic retailers and publishers tell us and on observing the mix of fans at comic conventions, rather than on survey or other research data, but I believe it to be true."

Looking at comic book conventions, it's easy to see what a mix of people are into comics these days, and it's no surprise that many conventions are getting bought out or otherwise going corporate.

Digital technology has also increased readership by making it easier to buy and enjoy comics. No wonder Amazon bought ComiXology in April.

As much as the movies and technology are helping the industry, however, even more credit should go to comic book creators. Most comics are simply better these days — and that's my personal opinion, but it's also a popular one. Comics books have become far more sophisticated since their debut last century. Contemporary mainstream comics can be excellent, while creative alternative comics are more plentiful than ever.

Comics are often better than movies about the same characters, which makes sense when you think about it. Hundred-million-dollar movies are designed to reach the widest possible audience while also setting up sequels and spinoffs, which can result in something bland. Comics can meet the vision of a writer and a small team of artists with far fewer limits and nothing more at risk than cancelation.

San Diego Comic-ConSo what comic books are worth reading? There are the classics like Alan Moore's "Watchmen" and Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Returns," not to mention other Miller masterpieces "Sin City," "300," and the less-known-but-amazing "Daredevil: Born Again." "The Walking Dead" by Robert Kirkman is excellent and in many ways better than its live-action adaptation, and the same can be said for "Kick-Ass" by Mark Millar and "Scott Pilgrim" by Bryan Lee O'Malley.

For Marvel fans wanting to stick with characters they know, I can recommend several series that are on shelves now with back issues on ComiXology. DC fans will have to look elsewhere for advice.

[Back-issue spoilers ahead.]

Let's start with "Avengers" by Jonathan Hickman, a cerebral epic launched in 2012 as the primary title about Earth's mightiest heroes. In the frame at the top of the page taken from "Avengers 29," Steve Rogers has a flashback to a moment when he used the Infinity Gauntlet to prevent a collision of two universes. He goes on to remember how the Infinity Gauntlet was destroyed, how the Illuminati — a secret group of powerful men including Tony Stark — planned to build a new weapon that could be used to destroy an alternate universe, and how they wiped Roger's mind when he opposed them.

Here's what happens next, in an illustration penciled by Leinil Yu:

captain america confronts tony stark avengers

To see things from the perspective of the Illuminatiread Hickman's also good and even moodier "New Avengers."

For something similarly ambitious but more fun, try "Uncanny Avengers" by Rick Remender, an Avengers and X-Men crossover the likes of which you won't see in the theater as long as Avengers belong to Disney and X-Men are licensed to FoxJust check out the cool team assembled on the cover of "Uncanny Avengers 20" drawn by Daniel Acuña:

uncanny avengers 20 wolverine thor iron man

For something alternative, check out Matt Fraction's critically acclaimed "Hawkeye," which has already inspired a wave of superhero comics in indie style. Although featuring an Avenger, this clever series follows the mostly civilian adventures of Clint Barton in Bedford-Stuyvesant, including a Hurricane Sandy story last year and experimental narration devices such as the use of sign language and a story from the perspective of a dog.

Here's a page from "Hawkeye #2" beautifully drawn by David Aja:

Disney Might Be Building Drones To Use In Its Theme Parks

Disneyland Park Anaheim, California

It looks as if Amazon may be getting some company in its bid to build and use commercial drones.

Disney has applied for three separate drone-related patents that discuss the possible uses of "aerial display systems," which means that Walt Disney's theme parks could one day roll out a whole new level of entertainment.

The Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch first noticed the patent applications, which were filed Thursday.

The first patent discusses using unmanned aerial vehicles to create a "floating pixel or 'flixel'" that could possibly replace fireworks. The second one details using UAVs for floating projection screens that would display lights or images in the sky. The third patent looks to fly around marionettes and puppets on top of the UAVs.

"Presently, aerial displays have been limited in how easy it has been to alter the choreography and to provide a repeatable show," one patent says.

"Other aerial shows rely on fireworks, which can be dangerous to implement and often provide a different show result with each use. Other displays may us [sic] aircraft such as blimps dragging banners or even large display screens. While useful in some settings, these aircraft-based displays typically have been limited in size and use only a small number of aircraft and display devices."

If the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office approves the patents, Disney's numerous stage performances at its theme parks, which use laser lights and fireworks, could theoretically see a massive upgrade.

Drones could one day fly around Cinderella's Castle.

Comedian Billy Eichner burst into the mainstream during last night's Emmy Awards.

The creator and star of Funny or Die's "Billy on the Street" (which now airs on Fuse) teamed up with Emmy host Seth Meyers for a special edition of "For A Dollar," a segment from the relatively niche series.

"Billy on the Street" follows the format of a typical "on-the-street" game show except here, unknowing contestants win a $1 prize if they agree with Billy's hilarious take on pop culture.

Hilarity ensues when Eichner gets emotional and aggressive towards the strangers he finds on the streets of New York City and their subsequent reactions to being accosted are amazing.

The video killed it with the A-list Emmys audience in the room.

Amazon announced on Monday that it was buying Twitch, a site devoted solely to video-game-related live-streaming content, for $970 million.

That might seem like a ton of money. But the video games are also a spectator sport, and a lot of people are making serious cash by playing in tournaments and getting lucrative sponsorships from computer parts makers.

They also make money streaming their practice sessions on Twitch.

e-Sports Earnings has ranked the 100 players with the highest overall earnings from competitive gaming.

There are more than 150 gamers who have earned over $100,000 in prize money.

15. Jiang "YYF" Cen - $436,996.10 from 39 tournaments

China's Jiang "YYF" Cen earned most of his cash playing "Dota 2." The largest prize he took home from a single tournament was $200,000 in 2012, as part of a team called Invictus Gaming. He announced this year that he's retiring from gaming (translated).

The "Dota 2" tournament has its own Twitch channel.

14. Luo "Ferrari_430" Feichi - $441,943.83 from 40 tournaments

Luo "Ferrari_430" Feichi, also from China, was part of Invictus Gaming, which won the "Dota 2" championship in 2012. That's also the tournament that won him the most cash: $200,000. The team won $1 million for that tournament alone.

13. Jang "Moon" Jae Ho - $443,118.85 from 87 tournaments

Jang "Moon" Jae Ho is one of the "WarCraft III" players featured in the documentary "Beyond the Game." He's also a "StarCraft II" player, and made $12,799.73 from two tournaments before he was even 18 years old.

You can watch people playing "StarCraft II" on Twitch.
