Why This Year's Emmys Will Air On A Monday Night For The First Time In Nearly 40 Years

aaron paul bryan cranston

For the first time in 38 years, the Emmys will occur on Monday night.

The last time the ceremony was held on Monday was during the 28th Primetime Emmy Awards in May 1976.

Typically, the event is held on a Sunday evening in late August or September, but we'll be watching the 66th annual awards ceremony on a different night for a few reasons.

Ever since 2006 when NBC has aired the Emmys they have taken place in August.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this is because of NBC's deal to air Sunday Night Football, a big rating's winner for the network. When asked about the shift to Monday, Deadline reports NBC attributed the move to avoid any conflict with the NFL preseason

A quick look at television scheduling shows NBC probably made the decision to move to Monday night to avoid going head-to-head with another big awards' show.

MTV's Video Music Awards just so happen to be airing Sunday, August 24.

This isn't out of the ordinary as the VMAs usually air some time at the end of August or early September on a Sunday.

This year's event is expected to is expected to have Taylor Swift debut her new song "Shake It Off" on stage. Beyoncé is also set to perform and will receive the Video Vanguard Award, MTV's lifetime achievement award.

Instead of getting two awards shows competing against each other (and HBO's series finale of "True Blood") for similar demographics in the ratings, we'll be getting two big awards shows back-to-back.

The three-hour Primetime Emmys will air August 25 from 8-11 p.m.

'Sin City' Sequel Bombs Opening Weekend

Jessica Alba and Eva Green couldn't save "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For." The sequel to the 2005 film bombed this weekend debuting to $6.5 million at theaters.

The first film, based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, opened to a big $29 million and went on to make more than $158 million worldwide.

Estimates for the sequel were never as big; however, analysts still expected the sequel to bring in around $15 million opening weekend. BoxOffice.com tracked the film to make $20 million this weekend.

It's thought the almost 10-year delay between sequels is one of the factors that led to a poor delivery.

The Robert Rodriguez film is the director's latest to take a punch at theaters.

His last film, "Machete Kills" (2013) opened to $3.8 million while "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World" (2011) debuted to $11.6 million.

No new film this weekend topped the box office.

Instead, "Guardians of the Galaxy" returned as the number one movie at the box office. Disney's latest Marvel movie has made $489.5 million worldwide to date easily making it one of the highest-grossing films of the summer.

The Michael Bay-produced "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" reboot has now made more than $235 million worldwide in two weeks.

Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande may have opened the MTV Video Music Awards with a showstopper; however, no one closes out an awards show like Queen Bey.

Beyoncé shut down the VMAs with an epic 16-minute medley of a dozen of her songs.

It was sexy, sensual, raw, and emotional.

It was flawless.

The singer's performance came in lieu of accepting the the Video Vanguard Award, MTV's equivalent to a lifetime achievement award.

Here's how it went down.

If you watched the MTV Video Music Awards live on television, you weren't watching them the right way.

MTV ran a handful of live action feeds online during the show that were more entertaining than the broadcast on television.

Audience camera two was a gold mine showing off Taylor Swift and Katy Perry's dance moves, Kim Kardashian's reaction to Jay Pharoah's impression of her husband Kanye West, and other musician's reactions to the performers of the night.

However the best reaction may have to go to Jennifer Lopez who clearly was not feeling Usher's performance at the VMAs.

For The First Time In 20 Years, Nintendo Could Be Bringing Back The Infamous Dog From 'Duck Hunt'

duck hunt dogFor the first time in 20 years, the infamous dog from Nintendo's hit game "Duck Hunt" could be making a comeback.

super smash bros wii uAn updated version of what appears to be the same "Duck Hunt" dog was spotted on anonymous message board 4chan. The 4chan member uploaded multiple screenshots of a game that could be Nintendo's upcoming “Super Smash Bros." for 3DS.

The latest chapter of "Super Smash Bros.", which is one of Nintendo's best-selling and critically-acclaimed franchises, will be released on Nintendo’s handheld console on October 3 and later for Wii U. (NeoGAF compiled the leaked screenshots, which we found through Kotaku’s Jason Schreier)

The Smash Bros. list of characters is typically hard to come by before launch. But the tipster posted this screenshot of 48 characters, including the Duck Hunt dog:

SPOILER ALERT! If you don't want to know which secret characters might appear in the next big crossover brawler for 3DS and Wii U, you should stop reading. Maybe read some other Business Insider stories.)

You can see most of the familiar faces, including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Wario, Donkey Kong, Princess Zelda, Samus, Fox McCloud, Kirby, and others.

But there are plenty of other new additions to this list: Nintendo previously unveiled Pac-Man and the Wii Fit Trainer as additions to the roster, but this alleged screenshot also reveals Bowser Jr. and Shulk from “Xenoblade.”

For those that never played "Duck Hunt," that iconic Nintendo game from the mid-80s that let you shoot ducks on your TV screen with a light gun called the NES Zapper. This dog was typically called the "Laughing Dog" as he would laugh at the player whenever he or she failed to shoot down all of the ducks on the screen. IGN called the Laughing Dog "one of the most annoying video game characters ever," thanks to its perceived smugness gamers "love to hate."

The dog only made one other appearance in a video game released in  1990, "Barker Bill's Trick Shooting." That was another NES game that used the zapper.

Here's the dog in that game:

Laughing Dog aside, some fans noticed how characters from previous “Smash Bros.” titles were left off the roster. The original 4chan poster says those characters, like Ice Climbers Snake from “Metal Gear Solid," will be made available at a later date through a downloadable content (DLC) package.

If Duck Hunt Dog is included in the game, one designer mocked up how he could be played in Smash.

Burning Man

The annual Burning Man celebration was officially set to begin Monday, but reports from the festival's Twitter and Facebook accounts indicate that will not be the case.

Because of inclement weather, fans are being turned away at the festival's gates. The "fully functioning metropolis" known as Black Rock City will be closed until further notice, with festival organizers confirming that it will would officially open until at least midday Tuesday.

The Burning Man traffic Twitter account was the first to report the rain, with the official festival account soon following suit, eventually confirming that the festival won't begin until Tuesday.

According to attendees' social-media posts as of a few hours ago, the line of cars waiting to get into the festival was looking at at least 12 hours of standing by.

Aaron Paul Is Leading Fans On An Awesome 'Breaking Bad' Scavenger Hunt Before The Emmys

yeah science breaking bad jesse pinkman aaron paul

Most actors probably spend the hours ahead of the Emmys prepping for the awards show.

"Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul, who's nominated for a supporting Emmy for the AMC series, is spending his day sending fans of the show on a scavenger hunt to win prizes and meet cast members.

This is how you send a show off right.

So far, Paul has sent fans in search of four actors.

They've all been responded to pretty quickly.

The first challenge was to find R.J. Mitte in an IHOP.

Mitte, who played cereal-loving Walt Jr., had an autographed box of Raisin Bran waiting for a group of fans.

If you've ever wanted plush versions of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Paul), actor Luis Moncada who played one half of the axe-wielding twins was holding them hostage at a taco joint.

The only thing better than binge-watching "Breaking Bad" is receiving a signed copy of the pilot script from the entire cast. Paul asked fans to meet up with Badger (Matt Jones) at the Guitar Center in Hollywood for a chance to receive it.

Things became crazy real fast.

Next door to the Guitar Center you can meet Krazy 8 (Max Arciniega) at Rock n Roll Ralph's. No word on what he's giving out.

Now, Paul is asking fans to find the license plate to his car on the show. For those who don't remember, it's "The CAPN."

the capn breaking bad

Now, he just challenged everyone to a game of tag in West Hollywood Park. This could get dangerous.

This isn't the first time Paul has launched a "Breaking Bad" scavenger hunt for fans.

In September, Paul scattered tickets for a screening of the series' final episodes in Boise, Idaho.

Want in on the fun? If you're in Los Angeles bring up Paul's Twitter feed and play along!

Here's Why Amazon Just Paid Nearly $1 Billion For A Site Where You Watch People Play Video Games

$

Twitch homepage

Amazon said Monday it's buying video-streaming site Twitch for $970 million in cash, noting that in just three years it's built a platform that attracts millions of visitors every month.

Google was reported to have acquired the site last month for a whopping $1 billion, but early on Monday, The Information reported that someone "close to the transaction" said the site was also in talks with Amazon.

Twitch obviously has the potential to make a lot of money if it's attracting buyers like Google and Amazon. But how did a video game live-streaming site become so potentially lucrative anyway?

What Is Twitch?

twitch ceo emmett shear

Twitch launched in 2011 as a branch of Justin.tv, a popular video-streaming site. Twitch was focused on video-game-related content.

People can create their own channels, where they upload footage of themselves playing video games while sometimes providing audio commentary over the footage. In some cases, people host video-game podcasts and shows.

The site is also where many e-sports competitions are broadcast live.

Users get their own channel pages, which include a built-in chat room for the players and the viewers to interact.

How Big Is It?

Twitch is huge. In an April report, it accounted for more than 40% of live-streaming traffic by volume in the U.S., according to online video analytics site Qwilt. That made it the No. 1 live-streaming platform by a large margin.

Twitch Shares

In February, Twitch was fourth in peak internet traffic in the U.S. after Netflix, Google, and Apple, respectively. At 1.8%, it was bigger than Hulu, Amazon, and Facebook in peak traffic.

And that's only in the U.S. According to Qwilt, Twitch ranks in the top five video-entertainment sites across the globe. That's huge for a site that's only related to video gaming.

Twitch is now so big that Justin.tv shut down Aug. 5, saying that Twitch was now the focus of its resources, according to CNET.

Why Is It So Big?

According to its own report, in 2013, 58% of Twitch users spent more than 20 hours a week watching videos on the site.

PS4 Dual Shock ControllerTwitch has its own iOS and Android apps and has been integrated with Xbox and PlayStation consoles. PC gamers can also upload footage to Twitch.

Even Amazon's Fire TV has a Twitch app.

On the PlayStation 4, for example, sharing some gameplay action to Twitch is as easy as pressing a share button.

People love watching other people play games and commenting on them.

Felix Kjellberg, the Swedish YouTube star behind the channel PewDiePie, makes about $4 million a year in ad sales doing just that.

Much like other video sites, Twitch offers a partner program for its usersAnd Twitch users can stream footage on the site for as long as they want, even 24 hours a day.

E-sports is another huge moneymaker for Twitch. People flock to Twitch to watch live streaming of their favorite video game tournaments, such as "League of Legends" and "StarCraft."

Some Cool Things Happening On Twitch

Fish Plays PokemonIn February, Twitch crowdsourced more than 150,000 people to play an online game of "Pokemon." To make the players move, people entered voice commands in the chat room.

And this month, Twitch users went from playing "Pokemon" themselves to watching a fish play "Pokemon." More than 220,000 users are tuning in to watch a fish named Grayson Hopper play the Game Boy game.

A Ridiculous Rule Is Allowing 'True Detective' To Go Up Against 'Breaking Bad' At The Emmys

$
0
0

true detective matthew mcconaughey woody harrelson

When the Emmys air Monday, HBO's hit series "True Detective" will go head-to-head with AMC's "Breaking Bad" in one of the closest races of the night.

The mystery crime thriller received a total of 12 nominations this year including nods for both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Drama Series.

While that sounds fair, both shows were incredibly talked about in the past year receiving high praise from critics and fans alike, some say it makes little sense for the HBO series to be sitting alongside "Breaking Bad" during its final season.

Back in March, HBO announced "True Detective" would compete as a drama series. The news was met with surprise since the show fits the Emmys' definition of a miniseries

A miniseries is based on a single theme or story line, which is resolved within the piece. In a single awards year all of the parts must be presented under the same title and have continuity of production supervision.

A miniseries consists of two or more episodes with a total running time of at least four
broadcast hours (at least 150 program minutes).

However, it also fits the definition of a drama series:

Comedy and drama series are defined as programs with multiple episodes (minimum of six), where the majority of the running time of at least six of the total eligible episodes are primarily comedic for comedy series entries, or primarily dramatic for dramatic series entries, in which the ongoing theme, storyline and main characters are presented under the same title and have continuity of production supervision.

Since day one, it's been known "True Detective" would have a different cast and storyline every season

It's an unusual television format that FX's "American Horror Story" adopted when it first aired in 2011. It's also one that the network's new show "Fargo," nominated for 18 Emmys, also shares.

american horror story

However, both of those shows are dueling it out in the TV movie/miniseries category.

What gives? Is HBO's drama getting special treatment?

Not exactly.

Vulture pointed out a closer read of the Emmy's rules shows exactly why "True Detective" never would have been put into the miniseries category unless producers went out of their way to receive permission to run in either category.

A limited-run series with a "created by" credit CANNOT enter as a miniseries
unless the producer for the limited run series applies for and receives entitlement to dual
qualification, i.e. qualification in more than one category, because of an affirmative
determination by the Awards Committee that the limited run series has elements of both
drama series and miniseries categories.

The jarring line there is the fact that any miniseries that conveniently has a "created by" credit can't be labeled a miniseries unless a petition is submitted.

It's a rule that has allowed "American Horror Story" to be nominated first as a drama and later as a miniseries after it lost to "Homeland" at the 2012 Golden Globes in the drama category

The move was met with a lot of backlash from critics who claimed the show thought it had a better chance of winning in the Outstanding TV movie or miniseries category. But honestly it seems kind of weird for a show with a revolving cast and storyline to receive the same treatment as longer dramas.

Vulture reports the only reason "Fargo" didn't have the same issue this year is because the FX series cleverly made the decision to phrase its credit as "created for television by" instead of "created by."bob odenkirk fargo

It's a very unclear and murky way for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to deal with the nomination categories for shows.

It's not just "True Detective" that was placed into a category that may not correctly define it. "Orange is the New Black" is being labeled as a comedy so it doesn't go up against fellow Netflix series "House of Cards." Showtime's "Shameless" is also in the category after being considered a drama for three years now that award-winning "30 Rock" is over.

What's worse is that we could very likely see "True Detective" in the miniseries category next year if there isn't as much buzz about season 2 and it doesn't want to go toe to toe with AMC's "Mad Men."

The "created by" loophole, if you will call it this, allows HBO to take advantage of a brilliant opportunity to try and take down TV favorite "Breaking Bad" during its final Emmy run.

Think of the headlines if "True Detective" shut out "Breaking Bad" from the biggest awards of the night.

Yes, "True Detective" certainly has the legs to possibly upset the AMC show, but the bigger win for HBO may be knowing it beat out a show it passed on so many years ago all because an exec thought the series' premise was too boring during a pitch meeting.

Amazon announced Monday that it was purchasing Twitch, the video game live-streaming site, for $970 million.

But before Twitch was its own nearly $1 billion business, it was part of another streaming site, called Justin.tv.

Justin.tv, which was founded in 2007, allowed people to broadcast live video streams online. It later opened up to allow people to register and broadcast their own videos, for free.

Twitch, though, was a runaway hit, amassing more 8 million unique users after its first month. The numbers kept growing. In fact, just this past April, Twitch accounted for more than 40% of live-streaming traffic by volume in the U.S.

Twitch became so big, that Justin.tv changed its name to Twitch Interactive in February. And earlier this month, Justin.tv announced that it was shutting its doors.

"Justin.tv was officially renamed Twitch Interactive Inc. in February of 2014 and Twitch is now the focus of the company's resources," it reads on its site
