Kanye West Is Worried About Paparazzi Using Drones To Film His Daughter

Kanye West

Kanye West’s hatred for the paparazzi is well-documented, but according to TMZ (via The Verge), the Chicago-born rapper said he’s worried about photographers stalking his family by air.

He stated his fears during his deposition for a civil lawsuit filed by photographer Daniel Ramos, who sued the hip-hop artist for assault and battery last year over an incident that occurred at LAX that summer.

Here’s West in his own words, according to the deposition:

Is your daughter stalked by like drones? Are there drones flying where she’s trying to learn how to swim at age 1? … Wouldn’t you just like to just teach your daughter how to swim without a drone flying? What happens if a drone falls right next to her? Would it electrocute her? Could it fall and hit her if that paparazzi doesn’t understand how to remote control the drone over their house?

West said he planned on selling his $11 million mansion in Bel Air because he and his wife didn’t realize paparazzi could view into their home, and thus take pictures, from the street. TMZ reports the Wests are looking into a secluded estate in Hidden Hills, near Calabasas, worth roughly $20 million.

As far as the drones are concerned, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used for commercial purposes  are currently prohibited by the federal government — in other words, if you can make money off what the drone films, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will typically come down on you.

But for the most part, drones are fine as long as they aren’t used for commercial purposes and they fly lower than 400 feet, keeping a “sufficient distance” from large crowds and aircrafts. The FAA is in charge of monitoring drone use, but it cannot possibly keep track of every drone on every street corner, as it’s more concerned with regulating civil aircrafts and airlines.

The FAA will begin issuing the first domestic drone permits starting in September 2015, so Kanye has at least another full year to move to a place where drones can’t find him.

A new survey from Variety shows that YouTube stars are more popular with teenagers than Hollywood A-listers.

The survey encompassed the opinions of 1,500 teenagers on 20 well-known personalities (some from YouTube and some from mainstream media.) The teens were to rank the stars "in terms of approachability, authenticity and other criteria considered aspects of their overall influence."

According to Variety, it was found that "the five most influential figures among Americans ages 13-18 are all YouTube faves, eclipsing mainstream celebs including Jennifer Lawrence and Seth Rogen. The highest-ranking figures were Smosh, the online comedy team of Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla, both 26."

Smosh

The first Hollywood celeb that appeared on the list was the late Paul Walker at number 6.

Paul Walker

Followed by Jennifer Lawrence at number 7.

Jennifer Lawrence

Variety reports,

Looking at survey comments and feedback, teens enjoy an intimate and authentic experience with YouTube celebrities, who aren’t subject to image strategies carefully orchestrated by PR pros. Teens also say they appreciate YouTube stars’ more candid sense of humor, lack of filter and risk-taking spirit, behaviors often curbed by Hollywood handlers.

Michael Bay's 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Movie Is More Like 'The Megan Fox Show'

teenage mutant ninja turtles*Warning. Mild spoilers ahead*

Fans of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" will be pleased to hear that Michael Bay's latest movie doesn't butcher the origin story in the way they feared.

They may be disappointed to learn, however, that the movie isn't about the turtles.

Instead, it's all about Megan Fox.

See Fox fall. See Fox quiver. See Fox hide behind things.

"TMNT" marks the reunion between the 28-year-old bombshell actress and Bay, who had a falling out while working on the Transformers film franchise. Now, it appears Fox gets more screen time than Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, or Raphael in the Turtles' first motion-capture film.

After a stunning, comic-book-stylized opening sequence in which we learn how the turtles came to be, we only get glimpses of the creatures. Their crusty exteriors spiral through the night air as they take on the film's villains in an early fight sequence. The backs of their large, round heads peek above the sewer grate. Their can't-possibly-be-human shadows slither through the subway tunnels.

Seventeen minutes go by before audiences get a good look at their beloved, half-shelled heroes. Seventeen minutes!teenage mutant ninja turtles

In the meantime, we get to know Fox's character, April O'Neil, a gutsy reporter looking for a scoop. Tired of interviewing fitness gurus on camera, she's desperate to lose the fluff beat and be taken seriously as an investigative journalist.

And in the flick's major plot twist (made obvious pretty early, you're not missing much by reading on ...) it's revealed that Fox is the daughter of the scientific researcher who mutated the Turtles in his lab, many years ago. They were, in fact, her pets before she set them free.

Her big break arrives when O'Neil stumbles upon some illegal activity by the loading docks one night. An organized crime group called The Foot Clan has been terrorizing the residents of New York City in recent weeks, and O'Neil runs into them randomly as they seem to be transporting goods. Out of nowhere, the Turtles appear — or should I say, they arrive on the edge of the camera frame and stay out of the audience's sight — and engage in some serious whooping, from what I can gather.

Having been the sole witness to the vigilantes' successful thwarting of Foot Clan activity, O'Neil returns to the newsroom with the exclusive of a lifetime. Except that she has no photos, no positive identifications, and a description of the 6-foot-tall good guys that makes her sound like a lunatic.

teenage mutant ninja turtles

With that, we launch into Bay's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" origin story. Will O'Neil reunite with the Turtles and earn their trust? Will her colleagues — played by Whoopi Goldberg and Will Arnett in total lackluster performances — ever believe her ludicrous but very real journalistic hunch? And will she learn the whole truth behind her father's death, and how it all-too-coincidentally relates to the Turtles' existence?

What's most frustrating about Bay's franchise installment is not that it's Fox-heavy; it's that when the Turtles are on-screen, they're fantastic. And you wish you could see a whole movie about them. (Oh, wait.)

The throwbacks to the comic books and TV animated series are spot-on but not overdone, from the sparing use of the "Cowabunga" catchphrase to the product-placement pizza. Michelangelo is still a cool dude with his puka shells and pick-up lines; a taped-up-glasses-clad Donatello remains hesitant but brilliant; and Leonardo and Raphael are still butting heads, though they're intensely loyal to their brothers and sensei.

teenage mutant ninja turtles

There are moments throughout the film in which the audience sees their relationship light up, and we're reminded of the goofy, adolescent fun that the Turtles represent. Most memorably, during the movie's climax, they're stalled in an elevator while in pursuit of the Foot Clan's ringleader. Patiently waiting for the doors to open, they start beatboxing. Watch the clip here.

But those moments are just that — moments. Bursts of silliness that make the audience's nostalgia bubble up. Then the camera pans to Fox, endlessly trying to get out from behind the rubble.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are officially moving out of Kris Jenner's house and into a $20 million home of their own five minutes away from Kim's mom in the hills of Calabasas, according to Zillow.

The 8,000-square-foot French country-style home, formerly owned by Lisa Marie Presley, includes eight bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, two swimming pools, two spas, and even a vineyard on its three acre property.

"I am so ready to be out of my mom's house, you have no idea," Kim told People magazine this week. "We wanted to be away and have more privacy ... but it will be nice to still be close."

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West bought an $11 million mansion last year in Bel-Air — but decided to sell it because they wanted more space. Now, the couple are reportedly in contract to buy this $20 million home.

The 8,000-square-foot estate is located on 3 acres of land in Hidden Hills — right down the street from Kim's mom's house, where the couple had previously been staying with baby North.

The home — which boasts a very grand entrance —was previously owned by Elvis' daughter, Lisa Marie Presley.

CHART OF THE DAY: Netflix Is Finally Becoming HBO, Like It Said It Would (NFLX)

Last January, Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos said the company’s “goal is to become HBO faster than HBO can become us.” Well, mission accomplished. According to the latest data provided by the company, which was charted for us by Statista, Netflix has finally passed HBO in subscriber revenue ($1.146 billion vs. $1.141 billion).

Netflix says it has 48 million total paid subscribers, with the vast majority of those customers — 35.1 million, to be exact — in the U.S. HBO actually has more paid subscribers than Netflix with 127 million worldwide, but that figure also includes various channels owned by the company, including HBO 2, HBO Family, and Cinemax.

The Matrix

You've never seen "The Matrix" like this.

The action movie got a sound makeover from Phillip Raupach last year, when he submitted it to an arts competition at San Francisco State University.

Raupach's video first appeared on Sploid.

Instead of thundering assault rifles, viewers are treated to the sound effects you heard while playing Super Mario on your Nintendo.

The effects completely transform this "Matrix: Reloaded" scene from a fight to the death to a lighthearted joust.

Here's How Chris Pratt Motivated Himself To Stop Eating Hamburgers And Get In Shape

chris pratt guardians of the galaxy lighter

Chris Pratt is currently dominating the box office, with his "Guardians of the Galaxy" raking in over $126 million since opening last weekend.

But Pratt, who used to be 60 pounds heavier, didn't initially see himself in the role of action hero. He explains in the current cover story of Esquire:

“When 'Guardians of the Galaxy' was pitched to me, I said, 'I don’t think so.' I just didn’t picture myself getting the role. I didn’t want to go and embarrass myself like I did when I auditioned for G.I. Joe a couple of years previously. I went in there, and halfway through I saw the director’s eyes just glaze over. It made sense — I was a little heavy and out of shape. I was not gonna play someone from G.I. Joe. I did not look like a G.I. Joe action figure come to life."

Fast forward and Pratt is now a bona fide movie star, with Oscar-winning films like "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Moneyball" under his belt. But getting to "action figure" status took hard work and it has paid off.

"I have more energy. I sleep better. My sex drive is up. Blood's flowing. I'm less susceptible to impulse. I'm in a different mode," the actor says of his current, slimmed down 6'2 frame.

Here's how Pratt tells Esquire he motivated himself to get fit:

"When I was way out of shape, the idea of using whitening strips on my teeth seemed terrible. I have to do that every day? I'll never do it. What you want is instant results when you're out of shape. You want your teeth whitened in 45 minutes with the use of lasers. But when you're in shape, you know it's the result of doing a little bit every day. Moments aren't just moments. A moment might be a week or a month. So instead of 'Boy, I'd love to eat this hamburger right now,' I'm considering a little further into the future. I'm thinking, 'I eat that hamburger and that's 1,200 calories, and I'm gonna work out tomorrow and burn 800 calories. I may as well eat a salad here, still do that workout, and then I'm actually making progress.'"

Pratt says he had to sacrifice: "You can't have hash browns, or burgers, or anything fried. You can't have carbs. You have to work out five times a week."

But in the end, it has all been worth it to finally obtain his "action figure" physique: "I can do 40-inch box jumps now. Action-hero physical stuff. Jumping that high feels really good ... When you get in shape, the world around you becomes things you want to jump on and climb on."

Chris Pratt Seriously Has A '30 Or 40 Gun Arsenal'

$

guardians of the galaxy poster chris prattIt wasn't exactly acting when Chris Pratt was swinging weapons around in "Guardians of the Galaxy"  the 35-year-old is actually a big time gun collector.

Pratt is currently on the cover of Esquire magazine, in which he openly talked to the magazine's Anna Peele about his love of guns and stance on gun control:

"Pratt talks about his thirty- or forty-gun arsenal. He bought Faris [actress Anna Faris, Pratt's wife] a gun in the event that crazy person comes to their house while he’s in Louisiana and necessitates her 'blowing their f------ brains out.' He tells me to print that, just in case Anna Faris’ and Esquire’s fan demographics overlap.

It’s not all so primal — Pratt believes in firearm regulation, background checks, and preventing guns from falling into the hands of the mentally ill. He explains population control and hunting licenses and tags and the virtues of eating what you kill. It all makes sense, but it also feels kind of like when Dexter explains that he’s a good serial killer because his victims are rapists and murderers. Really, this guy just likes to kill s--t."

It's unusual for an actor to be so candid about being pro-guns in today's Hollywood.

Next up, Pratt will be taking on dinosaurs in next year's "Jurassic World."

STALLONE: Schwarzenegger Tricked Me Into Starring In 'Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot'

Upon its debut in 1992, Roger Ebert called  "Stop or my Mom Will Shoot" “so dimwitted, so utterly lacking in even the smallest morsel of redeeming value, that you stare at the screen in stunned disbelief.”

The film took home less than $30 million million at the U.S. box office. It currently has a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes

And it's all Arnold Schwarzenegger's fault.

In a hilarious anecdote picked up by Page Six, Stallone, whose Expendables 3 drops next week, told journalist Sandro Monetti at the film's UK premier how he ended up starring opposite Golden Girl Estelle Getty in a bizarre buddy-cop movie.

“I heard Arnold wanted to do that movie and after hearing that, I said I wanted to do it. He tricked me! He’s always been clever.”

As background, Stallone explained, his rivalry with Schwarzenegger had grown so intense during the '80's-'90s action film heyday that they couldn't stand the sight of one another.

“Did you ever have someone you wanted to strangle every day? It got to the point where we stopped talking to each other and couldn’t be in the same room.”

For the masochists among you, here is the trailer for SOMMWS:

WARNING: MINOR SPOILERS

Much like the other films in Marvel's universe, "Guardians of the Galaxy" came with its fair share of hidden call backs and easter eggs.

All of the movie's pop culture references prompted YouTube user "Mr. Sunday Movies" to put together a fun video guiding fans through every easter egg in the film.

The opening of the "Guardians" makes it very clear that Star-Lord Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) took a lot of his cues from the globe trotting archaeologist and adventurer, Indiana Jones.

This can be seen by how Quill stares at the mysterious orb artifact in the film, much like how Dr. Jones does with the golden idol in the beginning of 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

Researchers Made A Shark-Stalking Robot — Then The Sharks Turned On It

Last November, scientists from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's Ocean Systems Laboratory took an autonomous shark-stalking robot to Guadalupe, Mexico, to track and film great white sharks. Two weeks ago, they released the footage, and it looks as though the stalker became the stalkee.

The REMUS (Remote Environmental Monitoring UnitS) — or "SharkCam," as it was christened for its Discovery Channel Shark Week debut next week — is a torpedo-shaped vehicle with six cameras implanted to capture different angles. Once scientists attach an acoustic tag to the shark, which sends out sound pings, REMUS is able to follow those pings.

This is REMUS SharkCam:SharkCam5 This is what SharkCam typically sees when stalking a shark (the footage below is actually from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, back in 2012): SharkCam3But this is what it saw at Guadaloupe this time around:SharkCam1Oh yeah, and this: SharkCam 2 Turns out, the shark-stalking robot may itself have finally become prey.

"Sharks take advantage of the clear water to lurk in the darkness below the vehicle, then swim up suddenly and bite it on the tail or mid-section," according to the video, posted to Vimeo by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. "This is the same way sharks hunt seals near Guadalupe Island."

Luckily, the shark-tracking vehicle survived the attacks and recorded dozens of interactions, giving scientists their first closeups of great white shark predation, according to the video. The footage shows us "the majesty and grace of the ocean's top predator in its natural environment," the video says.

The footage and full story, filmed by Big Wave Productions, will appear on Discovery Channel's Shark Week, which starts Sunday. For more shark-tastic antics, check out the full footage below:

Khloe Kardashian got deep with US Weekly magazine this week, saying the ideal Instagram post would be a selfie taken with Jesus.

Khloe isn't the only Kardashian aligning herself with selfie fever this week. Sister Kim announced a new book — titled "Selfish" — featuring 352 photos of Kim, taken by Kim.

The book, according to The New York Daily News, will retail at $19.99, and will be published by Rizzoli's Universe imprint. "Selfish" is scheduled to debut on April 7, 2015.

The book is not unlike the gift Kim presented husband Kanye West in a recent episode of her family's show, "Keeping Up With The Kardashians." The gift was a book of 1,200 selfies of Kim.

Business-savvy Kardashian, whose new game "Kim Kardashian: Hollywood," is slated to rake in some big bucks this year, knows a lucrative opportunity when she sees one.

"["Selfish"] will feature many never-before-seen personal images from one of the most recognizable and iconic celebrities in the world," Rizzoli's website states.

It is unclear as to whether "Selfish" will include any selfies with Jesus.

Ever since Craig Ferguson announced in April that he will be departing CBS' "The Late Late Show," the rumor mill has been swirling as to who will replace him.

Now, The Wrap — who spoke to "an individual with knowledge of the situation"  is exclusively reporting the frontrunner is James Corden, a 35-year-old English actor, comedian, and writer.

"Corden rose to prominence in the UK as the co-creator, co-writer, and star of the BBC sitcom 'Gavin & Stacey' and subsequently lead the comedy play 'One Man, Two Guvnors,' which earned him a Tony Award for its Broadway run," reports Collider. While Corden isn't a recognizable name in the U.S., he does boast more than 4.3 million Twitter followers, which could draw a younger audience to CBS.

The Spaceship In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Was Named After An 80s Teen Heartthrob

Guardians of the Galaxy, Quill flying the Milano

"Guardians of the Galaxy" made a whopping $94 million at the box office opening weekend.

One of the reasons audiences resonated with the film is all of the nostalgic 1980s pop culture references, thanks to character Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) spending his early years on Earth up until 1988, when he was abducted by aliens.

Quill's love of 80s culture is shown throughout the film.

It's in the music he listens to, the things he talks about (Quill mentions "Footloose," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and John Stamos in the film), and apparently even the name of his ship.

In the film, Quill is the captain of a spacecraft called The Milano. You can see a picture of the ship in one of its many fire fights below.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Milano

For anyone who grew up in the 80s, the name Milano may sound familiar thanks to "Who's The Boss" star and teen heartthrob, Alyssa Milano

Milano, now 41, appeared on the hit ABC show from 1984-1992.alyssa milano who's the boss

Many fans caught the reference and figured that Quill named his ship after the actress.

The film's director, James Gunn, tweeted confirmation of the reference last week:

Luckily for 80s babies, Marvel and Disney have already green-lit a sequel for 2017.

Paul McCartney Gave A Profound Example Of How Celebrities Can No Longer Control Their Own Pasts

$

The reliability of historical accounts of events big and small has never not been an issue for society.

But with the rise of what might be called celebrity fascination fulfillment culture, sorting out truth from someone's unsourced but heavily read account seems to have risen to a new level of absurdity.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Paul McCartney explained why he wrote an entire song, "Early Days," for his recent album "New," about this phenomenon.

Revisionism. It's about revisionism, really. I know my memory has got chips in it that still can go exactly back to two guys sitting in a room trying to write "I Saw Her Standing There" or "One After 909." I can see that very clearly still, and I can see every minute of John and I writing together, playing together, recording together. I still have very vivid memories of all of that. It's not like it fades. Since John died so tragically, there's been a lot of revisionism, and it's very difficult to go against it, because you can't say, "Well, no, wait a minute, man. I did that." Because then people go, "Oh, yeah, well, that's really nice. That's walking on a dead man's grave." You get a bit sensitive to that, and you just think, "You know what? Forget it. I know what I did. A lot of people know what I did. John knows what I did. Maybe I should just leave it, not worry about it." It took a little while to get to that.

I know that I have every memory still intact, and they don't, as I say in the last verse, 'cause they weren't there. I think you'll find this in most bands, but in the Beatles' case, it's got to be worse than any case. For instance, I was on holiday once, and there was this little girl on the beach, little American kid. She says, "Hi, there. I've just been doing a Beatles appreciation class in school." I said, "Wow, that's great." I think, "I know, I'll be really cool here. I'll tell her a little inside story." So I go on about how something happened, and it was a fun story – and she looks at me, she says, "No, that's not true. We covered that in the Beatles appreciation class." I'm going, "Oh, f***." There's no way out, man! They're teaching this stuff now.

...these books that are written about the meaning of songs, like Revolution in the Head – I read through that. It's a kind of toilet book, a good book to just dip into. And I'll come across, "McCartney wrote that in answer to Lennon's acerbic this," and I go, "Well, that's not true." But it's going down as history. That is already known as a very highly respected tome, and I say, "Yeah, well, okay." This is a fact of my life. These facts are going down as some sort of musical history about the Beatles. There are millions of them, and I know for a fact that a lot of them are incorrect.

McCartney's comments echo recent ones by Philip Roth, who in 2012 posted an open letter to Wikipedia complaining about the entry for his work "The Human Stain." The webpage insisted that the book was based on the real-life story of a mixed-race professor who identified as being white.

“The entry contains a serious misstatement that I would like to ask to have removed. This item entered Wikipedia not from the world of truthfulness but from the babble of literary gossip–there is no truth in it at all,” Roth wrote on the New Yorker.

Wouldn't be the first time.

August is off to a huge start at the box office.

Despite poor reviews, the rebooted "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" debuted to a huge $65 million over the weekend. That makes it August's fourth-largest opening weekend ever behind "Guardians of the Galaxy" ($94.3 million), "The Bourne Ultimatum" ($69.3 million), and "Rush Hour 2" ($67.4 million).

The Paramount picture produced by Michael Bay cost an estimated $125 million

A sequel to the film is already slated for June 3, 2016.

The high performance of "TMNT" comes one week after "Guardians of the Galaxy" set a new August record with $94.3 million opening weekend. Marvel Studios' latest picture has already made $313 million worldwide.

The performance of both "Ninja Turtles" and "Guardians" has helped a slumping box-office summer season. Earlier this summer, box office ticket sales were down as much as 20% without a huge film like “Iron Man,” “Avengers,” or “The Dark Knight.” Grosses for the July 4 weekend were down 45%.

The Hollywood Reporter has referred to summer 2014 as Hollywood’s worst summer in eight years. It will be the first time no summer film will make more than $300 million domestically.

After this weekend, summer sales are behind 16.8%.

Amazon Reportedly Stops Some Disney Movie Preorders Over Spat With Hachette (AMZ)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc <amzn.o> has halted pre-orders of some Disney movies, the Wall Street Journal reported, in what appears to be another contract dispute after the online retailer began a protracted spat with publisher Hachette Book Group this year.

Physical copies of titles such as "Maleficent" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were unavailable for order on Amazon.com on Sunday. Digital copies of some of the movies in question were still available for pre-order.

Amazon.com did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment on the report. A Disney spokesman had no comment.

Amazon has been waging a battle against Hachette, the fourth-largest U.S. book publisher, over the price the online retailer can charge for e-books. Hachette is owned by France's Lagardere.

A group called Authors United ran a two-page ad in the New York Times on Sunday, criticizing Amazon for halting pre-orders from some Hachette authors and slowing delivery of books by Hachette authors. The ad was signed by more than 900 writers, including Stephen King and Donna Tartt.

In response, Amazon.com's Books Team ran a message on a website (http://www.readersunited.com/) on Friday evening reiterating its arguments for cheaper ebooks, and suggested people email Hachette CEO Michael Pietsch. The company published Pietsch's email address and listed key points people might want to make. [ID:nL2N0QF0FJ]

Pietsch replied to every individual who emailed him saying that the dispute started because Amazon is seeking a lot more profit and even more market share at the expense of authors, bookstores and Hachette.

"Both Hachette and Amazon are big businesses and neither should claim a monopoly on enlightenment, but we do believe in a book industry where talent is respected and choice continues to be offered to the reading public," Pietsch wrote on Sunday, a copy of which was emailed to Reuters.

"Once again, we call on Amazon to withdraw the sanctions against Hachette's authors that they have unilaterally imposed, and restore their books to normal levels of availability."

Amazon says pricing e-books at $14.99 or $19.99 is too expensive. It argues that cheaper e-books sell more copies and so ultimately generate more revenue and more royalties for authors.
