People Are Willing To Pay Way More For Homes Where Celebrities Used To Live [INFOGRAPHIC]

$

Everyone knows there are high markups in restaurants, bars, and most retail goods, but what about celebrity real estate?

The folks at real estate website Movoto looked at a number of celebrity homes in the Los Angeles and Malibu areas to see if the prices of these homes were inflated compared to similar non-celebrity homes in the same area simply because a famous person used to live there.

The answer, they found, is "yes" ... depending on the celebrity. Robert Pattinson's place in Los Feliz, for example, sold for 202% above the average home price in the neighborhood, but Katy Perry's Hollywood Hills home went for 27% below average.

Here's an infographic Movoto created looking at 12 different homes and whether they fell victim to "celebrity inflation":

Jeff Goldblum gave the best wedding gift of all time this weekend.

The 61-year-old actor attended the wedding of Pamela and Jesse Sargent in Toronto as the date of his fiancé Emilie Livingston, who is a friend of the bride.

Goldblum happily obliged the bride and groom's wedding day request and reprised his "Jurassic Park" role as Dr. Ian Malcolm for one epic photo.

"T-Rex chases bridal party... thank-god Dr. Ian Malcom was there to save the day!!" Pamela Sargent wrote on her Facebook page after the nuptials.

"What an amazing, unbelievable weekend! Thanks to everyone who came to celebrate with us, and thanks Jeff for being a good sport!" Pamela wrote next to the photo.

Photographer Adam Biesenthal is responsible for the awesome shot.

Of course, the Sargents weren't the first couple to think of the wedding day dinosaur photo-op — but they are the only ones to get Jeff Goldblum.

Let's take a closer look at that again:

WARNING: MINOR SPOILERS

Much like the other films in Marvel's universe, "Guardians of the Galaxy" came with its fair share of hidden call backs and easter eggs.

All of the movie's pop culture references prompted YouTube user "Mr. Sunday Movies" to put together a fun video guiding fans through every easter egg in the film.

The opening of the "Guardians" makes it very clear that Star-Lord Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) took a lot of his cues from the globe trotting archaeologist and adventurer, Indiana Jones.

This can be seen by how Quill stares at the mysterious orb artifact in the film, much like how Dr. Jones does with the golden idol in the beginning of 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

Guardians of the Galaxy purseRocket is voice by Bradley Cooper, whose character in 2009's "The Hangover" made the same dig at Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and his "man purse."

If you keep your eyes peeled, you will see many little items hidden away in the lair of The Collector (Benicio Del Toro).

Fun fact: Howard the Duck was voiced by "Family Guy" actor Seth Green.

Inside The Wacky World Of Epic Rap Battles Of History, YouTube's Biggest Comedy Duo

epic rap battles

Epic Rap Battles of History is one of the most successful YouTube series of all time. What started as a live improv skit by two friends has become an online sensation, with more than 10.6 million subscribers and 1.1 billion views under the Maker Studios network.

The premise is simple: founders Peter Shukoff (NicePeter) and Lloyd Ahlquist (EpicLloyd) pick two figures from history or pop culture and imagine what it would be like if they faced off in a battle in rap form. The videos are highly entertaining, with characters as varied as Darth Vader, Adolf Hitler, Abraham Lincoln, and Chuck Norris battling one another in full costume.

The videos have become so popular that the duo has been able to land cameos from celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Weird Al, and plenty of YouTube stars. They were featured in commercials during the World Cup and are now appearing on billboards in cities across the country.

Shukoff also just finished up a tour that took him across the country and Europe, from Los Angeles and New York City all the way to Amsterdam.

We recently caught up with Shukoff.

Business Insider: What's the story behind your YouTube channel?

Peter Shukoff: That story is long but very simple. I realized, in one flash of a moment, that the person behind each YouTube view is real, genuine, and they are present in real time. If you talk to them, they hear you. If you listen to them, they know you are really there. That basic philosophy has helped me grow into five different YouTube channels, with a total of approximately 14 million subscribers.

Each video I put out myself, or together with my partner in ERB, is as good as we can make it with the resources we have. When we had a $200 budget, we did the best we could, and now that we have a larger budget for each rap battle, we still do the best we can.BI: Do you have a background in comedy?

PS: Yes. I studied improv at iO in Chicago and was hired by Lloyd Ahlquist's (my partner in rap battles) comedy troupe, Mission Improvable, to tour colleges around the U.S. performing improv comedy. I also did a one-man show of comedy and music, anywhere I could get up and play.

BI: Where do you get inspiration for your rap battles?

PS: History, the audience, my friends, Netflix, books, television, my dog, my local farmer's market, my mother, my girlfriend — everyone has input.

BI: There's a ton of historical details in each of your videos — how much research is involved?

PS: As much as possible. I read and digest history constantly.

BI: What is a typical day in production like?

PS: Hectic, fun, full of stress turning into great celebrations of laughter.

BI: Has your production process changed over time?

PS: It has gotten more streamlined. We write the songs in a chunk, then shift to producing the videos. That helped us keep our eye on the prize: a great song first, with a great video to support it.

BI: How do you make a video go viral?

PS: You work on it until it makes people feel good to show it to their friends.BI: Was there a moment when you knew you had made it? What was that like?

PS: I made it the first time I got paid anything to do what I love. That was many years ago — this is all just a wonderful bonus.

epic rap battles billboard

BI: How did it feel to see your commercial during the World Cup? And the billboards?

PS: I never saw the commercials; I don't watch much TV. I got my joy from the fans' tweets telling us how proud they are. It reminded me how much we and the audience are in this together.

I did see the billboards; it was surreal. I stood next to one waiting for someone to recognize me. They didn't.

BI: What are your plans for the channel's future?

PS: Which channel? Which future? What is a plan?

My goal is to make entertainment that is real, that is satisfying, that inspires and teaches, but perhaps most importantly, is fun and makes people feel good watching it. It's a very simple plan; I'm going to keep doing that.

Disney reported third quarter adjusted earnings per share of $1.28 on revenue of $12.47 billion.

Analysts were looking for earnings per share of $1.16 on revenue of $12.16 billion, according to data from Bloomberg.

In after hours trade following the report, shares of Disney were up 0.5%.

Revenue at Disney's media networks segment grew 3% to $5.5 billion, while parks and resorts revenue was up 8% to $3.9 billion and studio entertainment revenues grew 14% to $1.8 billion.

Free cash flow decreased 25% from the prior year quarter, falling to $2.05 billion from $2.72 billion.

Disney reported that operating income in its cable networks segment fell 7% to $1.9 billion due to an decrease at ESPN. The company said this was due to "higher programming and production costs, decreased recognition of previously deferred revenue and the absence of ESPN UK, which was sold in the fourth quarter of the prior year."

At ESPN, the company said, "advertising revenue increased due to higher rates and more units sold. Higher rates reflected the benefit of FIFA World Cup soccer in the current quarter, partially offset by two less NBA finals games this year."

"Frozen" again bolstered Disney's results, with the company saying that income in its worldwide home entertainment segment was drive by unit sales growth, reflecting the success of "Frozen."

In its second quarter, the media giant reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.11 on revenue of $11.65 billion and reported studio entertainment revenue that was up 35% over the prior year, reflecting the success of its "Frozen" and "Thor: The Dark World" titles.

The editor of the New York Times's editorial took some time from his day on Tuesday to respond to a question on Reddit from rapper Snoop Dogg about smoking marijuana in the morning.

The editor, Andy Rosenthal, who was participating in an "Ask Me Anything" chat on the site, said he was cool with it.

"whats wrong wit a lil wake n bake??" Snoop Dogg asked, via the "Here_Comes_The_King" account he has previously used to post on Reddit.

Rosenthal said "wake n bake" was "absolutely" fine by him. However, the editor told Snoop Dogg not to engage in the practice at the Times' building in Manhattan.

"Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Please, come visit the Times editorial board soon, but we have no-smoking building," Rosenthal wrote.

The Reddit appearance comes as the Times is aggressively promoting its recent editorial endorsing the legalization of recreational marijuana use.

BOB IGER: The Marvel Brand Is On Fire

Disney crushed expectations with its third quarter earnings, released after markets closed on Tuesday.

Chairman and CEO Bob Iger also pointed out what a big hit the company has in a Q4 movie: "Guardians of the Galaxy," which set a record with a $94 million domestic August weekend opening.

"We are thrilled with the spectacular performance of 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' which holds great promise as a new franchise for our company and once again reinforces the tremendous value of Marvel,” Iger wrote in the earnings report.

Since buying Marvel for $4 billion in 2009, Disney's Marvel movies have earned around $6 billion at the box office and contributed much more through merchandise and related sales. According to Iger, this is just the start.

With "Guardians" already set for a 2017 sequel, Iger confirmed, “Our strategy of building strong brands and franchises continues to create great value across our company.”

Appearing on CNBC, Iger explained the importance of the film's success: "It's not just about a good movie, it's about that the Marvel brand has arrived."

Iger continued:

"Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel is a wonderful story. We believe that when we bought Marvel in 2009 they had great intellectual property, great characters, great stories, and a very talented group of people working for them.

"We did not think that a spot light had been put on the Marvel brand and we thought that the continue success in terms of producing movies and with Disney as a partner, and with them being apart of Disney that we could burnish the Marvel brand. We've done a good job of that. I don't mean to sound overly conceited about it, but I think 'Guardians of the Galaxy' speaks volumes in that regard."

Next up, Iger says, "We look ahead to 'Avengers 2' and 'Ant Man' and 'Captain America 3' and we just announced a sequel to 'Guardians' which will be in 2017 ... the studio is in great shape."

BOB IGER: 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Footage Is 'Very, Very Exciting'

Disney CEO Bob Iger had a big day with Disney's earning crushing expectations, and the future could be even brighter.

Sitting down on CNBC's "Closing Bell" Iger discussed the hotly anticipated seventh installment of the "Star Wars" series, "Star Wars: Episode VII."

"I can only tell you that production is underway," Iger said. "We had a very brief hiatus ... which is due in part to the fact that Harrison Ford broke his ankle."

Harrison Ford, who is reprising his role as Han Solo, broke his leg (not his ankle as Iger suggested) when a door from the iconic spaceship the Millennium Falcon fell on Ford.

"The footage we've seen  is very, very exciting to us," Iger said. "I think there's about 500 days left between now and December 18th, 2015 when the movie comes out. That doesn't seem like very long."

Director Abrams has given fans snippets of the set here and there, but there's not enough to quell the excitement over the release of the film. A fact that Iger is very aware of.

"There's a lot of pent up demand," Iger added. "We're just as excited as the fans are about it."

Here's How Much America's Biggest States Go To The Movies

Californians see a whole lot more movies than people in Pennsylvania, according to data from the Motion Picture Association of America.

Check out a chart on the biggest states:

Screen Shot 2014 07 17 at 3.43.10 PM

The MPAA and its data provider, Opinion Research Corporation, couldn't tell us how much people liked movies in the rest of the states, but this chart is interesting in itself.

California leads among large states with 80% of residents seeing movies in theaters last year and 20% going frequently. On the other end of the spectrum, only 52% of Pennsylvanians went to the movie theater last year and only 6% went often.

Compared to the previous year, Indiana and Illinois saw the biggest drops, with 12 percentage points fewer moviegoers. But the MPAA only began tracking these statistics in 2012, so it's too early to note any patterns, MPAA Press Assistant Sam Newton told Business Insider.

Here is the list put out by the MPAA for 2012:

Jason Statham Almost Died While Filming 'The Expendables 3'

Actor Jason Statham narrowly escaped death while filming "The Expendables 3" when he jumped out of a truck during an action scene that went terribly wrong, according to the UK Mirror.

With Statham behind the wheel of a three-ton truck, the brakes went out and the truck plunged 60 feet into the Black Sea. Fortunately, Statham — who previously competed as a professional diver for England— knew how to handle it.

"Luckily we had taken the doors off before," his co-star Sylvester Stallone told The Mirror at the film's London premiere. "If anyone else had been in that truck we would have been dead because we were all wearing heavy boots and gun belts. We would have drowned. But because Jason is an Olympic-quality diver he got out of it.”

Sly brought up the anecdote recently, although this isn't the first time it's being reported. Actor Terry Crews also told of the incident last year during filming. “He gets out, swims to the top, and the truck is gone," Crews told Jay Leno. "Let me tell you something, Jason Statham is a true bad, bad dude.”

Statham for his part, played down any danger he experienced on set while playing the character of "Lee Christmas," a former British SAS soldier. When asked of his worst injury during filming, he said, "I snapped a shoelace in the very first scene," according to the UK Independent.

We finally get to see what Ben Affleck's Batman looks like without the cowl.

Up until this point we've only seen photos of Affleck as the Caped Crusader in the upcoming "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice."

But now, thanks to a video taken on the film's set by YouTube user Samuel Otten, we're able to see the man behind the mask.

The video shows Affleck on set standing next to many buses marked Metropolis City.

As for the look of Affleck's billionaire Bruce Wayne himself, he seems to be dressed in a nice blue shirt with a dark blue vest.

Here's a closer look.

Last month during Comic Con, director Zack Snyder showed a brief scene from the film along with photo of Gal Gadot dressed as Wonder Woman, but other than that information regarding the film has been locked down.

We'll just have to wait until "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" hits theaters May 6th, 2016, to see what Affleck's Bruce Wayne was doing in Metropolis.

You can watch the full set video by Otten below:

Hillary Clinton on "The Colbert Report."

Hillary Clinton dropped by Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" Tuesday night and held a faux-competition with host Stephen Colbert about who is on first-name basis with more celebrities.

The back-and-forth began when Colbert referred to "my good friend Tom Hanks" and "hanging out at George Clooney's place."

Clinton, a leading potential presidential contender in 2016, proceeded to up the ante.

"Oh I love George. I wish he could have joined us when I had lunch with Meryl Streep and Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa," she responded.

"Rafi!" Colbert exclaimed. "He is such a cut-up. Especially when we go camping with Oprah."

"O?" Clinton inquired.

"Oh, did that surprise you?" Colbert asked.

"No, 'O' is just what all of her real friends call Oprah," Clinton informed the Colbert.

The two continued name dropping prominent figures, with Clinton bragging about meeting with high-level officials in Afghanistan and China while Colbert boasted about Paul McCartney and former President Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton's husband.

"I hate to break this to you, but I've met him too," she said.

Kanye West Gave An Incredible But Ridiculous Deposition In A Court Fight With A Paparazzo

As expected, Kanye West gave a sarcastic and spirited deposition in a lawsuit in which he's accused of beating a photographer and smashing his camera.

TMZ obtained excerpts from West's deposition, in which he swore under oath that "I'm the smartest celebrity you've ever f------ dealt with. I'm not Britney Spears."

Things were off to a solid start when Nate Goldberg, an attorney for photographer Daniel Ramos, asked West where he's from and the rapper sarcastically replied, "Earth."

It only went downhill from there.

When Goldberg grilled West on his song "Flashing Lights," about paparazzi, the attorney quoted the lyric, "Till I get flashed by the paparazzi, damn, these n----s got me."

West immediately interrupted the questioning, saying, "You have to ask for a hall pass. You can't just say the 'n' word around me. It offends me because you're a white person saying 'n----.'"

West explained that he sees the struggle of blacks in the past the same as celebrities today, saying, "I equate it to discrimination.  I equate it to inequalities ... We, as group of minorities here in L.A., as celebrities have to ban together to influence guys like this  guys trying to take the picture, guys trying to get the big win, guys trying to get the check.

West then personally attacked Goldberg, exclaiming, "I'm in the business of trying to make dope s--- for the world.  You're in the business of representing scums and trying to make as much money as long as there's this lapse in the law."

In March, West pleaded "no contest" to misdemeanor battery for the alleged assault on Ramos. A judge sentenced him to two years probation, community service, and anger management courses, CNN reported.

However, West's legal troubles aren't over, as he still faces a civil suit from Ramos, who claims he's suffering physically and emotionally, the Los Angeles Times reported. The burden of proof is lower in civil cases, and these cases can result only in monetary damages and not jail time. The deposition was part of that civil suit.

Supermodel Heidi Klum's gorgeous Brentwood estate has sold for $24 million, slightly less than the $25 million it was listed for last month, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Klum reportedly hired a team that spent 6 months restoring the 8-bedroom, 10-bathroom home, which was originally built in 1999 and left empty for some time. The team replaced every window, re-stained the home's woodwork, upgraded all appliances, expanded the garden, and built a master bath.

Now, the home is more luxurious than ever. Set on 8.5 acres, the estate has an infinity-edge pool, a spa, a rose garden, hiking trails, and a koi pond.

Lynn Teschner of The Agency, Beverly Hills, was the listing agent for this property.

The 12,300-square-foot home has 8 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms.

It sits on 8.5 acres of land, which includes flat lawns, gardens, and hiking trails.

The home's foyer is simple yet elegant.

Nintendo’s Mercedes-Benz For Mario Kart 8 Is Actually Kind Of Depressing

Nintendo’s business is in dire straits, and has been for three consecutive years. Perhaps that’s why the company let Mercedes-Benz sponsor three new cars into its cartoonish racing game for the Wii U, in the form of a free downloadable content (DLC) package set to release at the end of the month.

The company originally announced just one Mercedes-branded kart for Mario Kart 8 — the Mercedes-Benz GLA — but Nintendo has since added two new models to the game: the W25 Silver Arrow and the 300 SL Roadster, according to Kotaku’s Luke Plunkett

mario kart mercedes

YouTube / Nintendo

According to Nintendo, the cars’ colors will change depending on the characters you use. For example, Peach would drive a red GLA, whereas Toad would drive a dark blue model.

Compared with the candy-colored karts of Mario Kart past, the Mercedes-Benz cars don’t look cartoonish at all, and seem a bit out of place. Hopefully this isn’t the start of a new trend for Mario Kart, where automakers can pay money to get their latest cars in Nintendo’s beloved racing franchise.

Though the DLC is free, this injection of realistic-looking cars is a bit jarring. But you be the judge: Check out Nintendo’s promotional video of the Mercedes karts and let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

Disney Now Has EIGHT Billion-Dollar Merchandise Brands (DIS)

Disney's red-hot third quarter earnings featured 16% year-over-year growth in consumer products, aka merchandise.

The company is seeing major growth there and across divisions from brands it bought in recent years, including Pixar, which it bought in 2006 for $7.4 billion, Marvel Entertainment, which it bought in 2009 for $4.6 billion, and Lucasfilm, which it acquired in 2012 for $4.1 billion. The 91-year-old company also has its own powerful brands.

On its earnings conference call, Vasily Karasyov, an analyst at Sterne Agee, asked for clarification on Disney's three billion-dollar brands and was corrected by chairman and CEO Bob Iger, who said the company now had eight:

Karasyov: You mentioned that you now have three $1 billion franchise properties in consumer products revenue. I think I know two of them, Princess and Star Wars. Do you mind telling me what the third one is?

Iger: The third one is followed by five others and we have eight. Pooh, Mickey Mouse, Monsters, Star Wars, Spider-Man, Cars, Disney Junior, and Princess ... And all over $1 billion in global retail sales in fiscal 2014.

As the world's top licensor, Disney generated a record $41 billion from licensed merchandise in 2013, a significant increase from $28.6 billion in 2010, according to a June report by Variety.

Also coming down the pipe (assuming Disney counts them separately), Disney could see major merchandise growth for Frozen and non-Spider-Man Marvel characters.

Asked about further mergers and acquisitions, Iger said the company was "spending a fair amount of time and capital investing in the assets that we currently have."

Appearing on the CNBC, Iger specifically called out the success of Marvel, including its latest hit in "Guardians of the Galaxy": "It's not just about a good movie, it's about that the Marvel brand has arrived."

James Corden, a comedian and actor, appeared alongside Keira Knightley in 2013's "Begin Again."

Ever since Craig Ferguson announced in April that he will be departing CBS' "The Late Late Show," the rumor mill has been swirling as to who will replace him.

Now, The Wrap — who spoke to "an individual with knowledge of the situation"  is exclusively reporting the frontrunner is James Corden, a 35-year-old English actor, comedian, and writer.

"Corden rose to prominence in the UK as the co-creator, co-writer, and star of the BBC sitcom 'Gavin & Stacey' and subsequently lead the comedy play 'One Man, Two Guvnors,' which earned him a Tony Award for its Broadway run," reports Collider. While Ferguson will be exiting the show at the end of this year, CBS honcho Les Moonves told TMZ last night that "we're not sure" who the replacement will be, but Corden is "one of the people we are talking to."

Moonves added, "We have someone in the 12:30 time slot that we're keying in on."

While Corden isn't a recognizable name in the U.S., he does boast more than 4.3 million Twitter followers, which could draw a younger audience to CBS.
