John Oliver Challenges Vladimir Putin Over 'Space Gecko' Mating Experiment

Comedian John Oliver passionately took up the cause of Russia's satellite designed to monitor gecko mating in space during his Sunday night program.

The satellite was reportedly malfunctioning last week, placing the five geckos on board in serious danger. Oliver, the host of HBO's "Last Week Tonight," refused to accept that outcome.

"Don't you dare laugh at that," he told his viewers. "Don't you dare laugh at the fact that Russia has lost a satellite full of sexually active space geckos. There's nothing funny about that. This is like 'Apollo 13' all over again, only in Cyrillic and a quintet of Russian f**k lizards instead of Tom Hanks."

In order to avert the crisis, Oliver urged his viewers to fill out an online form letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin demanding he save the geckos.

"You can and should do more. You could go onto the Kremlin's contact page, which inexplicably has a form allowing you to write Vladimir Putin a letter. Which you can do at this address. Look, take this seriously. Don't be idiots about this. The Kremlin insists — this is true — that your suggestions be, and I quote, 'specific.' And I do not know of a more specific suggestion than: Go get those geckos!" he exclaimed.

Oliver went on to dismiss Russia's claim that they had reestablished control of the satellite on Saturday.

"They're clearly lying. They're just buying Putin enough time to run to a pet store, get five geckos, and parade them in front of us," he insisted. "Well, we don't want those geckos. We want the space geckos!"

Hillary Clinton Explains Why Darth Vader Is Polling Better Than She Is

Darth Vader

Hillary Clinton's favorability rating is worse than "Star Wars" villain Darth Vader, according to a new poll — and on Sunday, she tried to explain why.

"I think the deeper meaning is that people love fantasies and sometimes when we're so frustrated with the gridlock in Washington, we would like some deus ex machina figure," Clinton told CNN host Fareed Zakaria, according to a transcript.

Last week, The Washington Post and others highlighted a new poll of Star Wars characters showing them more popular than leading presidential contenders like Clinton and vastly more popular than Congress.

Clinton said Darth Vader was not her personal choice, however.

"Darth would not be my choice, but, you know, somebody, perhaps a slightly more positive attitude in his presentation ... to come in and just fix it. You know, we just get sick of it. But that's the price of democracy," she said, proceeding to compare the political structures of India and China to tout the benefits of democracy. "Each, in their own way, is a triumph. I mean, India is a triumph of a unified political nation and China has been triumphant in moving people out of poverty. But in the long run, who has the better system?"

Clinton went on to slam Congress for its inaction and said she could relate to people who would prefer fictional villains to the status quo.

"People get frustrated. And people are just so fed up with the gridlock and dysfunction in Washington. The Congress is just, you know, so, unfortunately, unable to even agree on the most obvious kinds of matters, that I think, you know, Darth Vader looks pretty good to a lot of people," she said.

Scarlett Johansson's Superhero Movie 'Lucy' Had A Killer Weekend At The Box Office

Scarlett Johansson commanded the box office this weekend with $44 million easily taking out Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's "Hercules."

The movie about a woman who gets injected with a drug that allows her to unlock 100% of her brain cost Universal Pictures about $40 million to make.

Meanwhile, The Rock's latest goliath, "Hercules," cost Paramount a whopping $100 million to make. The film managed to bring in $29 million — much better than the other "Hercules" bomb from earlier this year which made $8.9 million opening weekend.

Despite the number seeming slightly low for the price tag of the film, the figure is actually in check with, and even higher, then most opening weekends for The Rock

"Lucy" started gaining a lot of traction after Johansson was so prominently featured in this spring's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." Her role in that film may have helped this become a breakout over the weekend.

The performance of "Lucy" opening weekend may be one signifier that audiences are ready for more female superheroes on screen.

After bouncing on and off the market for at least 5 years, Billy Joel has finally sold his Hamptons home for around $19.95 million, reports Newsday.

The Piano Man had relisted the Sagaponack mansion for $23.5 million earlier this year.

Curbed speculates that the home had a tough time finding a buyer because it didn't have a pool, which practically a requirement for Hamptons homes.

The mystery buyer's new digs include a beachfront view, piano room, and recording studio situated in the fifth most expensive zip code in the country.

This is the view as you enter through the wooden gate.

You can gaze off the patio and look at your 145 feet of oceanfront property.

Why Fans Should Be Excited That George R.R. Martin Isn't Writing A 'Game Of Thrones' Episode Next Season

George R.R. Martin, comic con, game of thrones

The biggest complaint fans have had with "Game of Thrones" is having to wait for George R.R. Martin to release the highly anticipated next chapter and sixth book in the series, "The Winds of Winter."

But fans may not have to wait much longer.

Martin, who has written an episode every season of the series (including the pricey "Blackwater" episode), told Entertainment Weekly at Comic Con that he will not be writing one for the upcoming fifth season.

The reason behind Martin taking a year off is to focus on the upcoming novel.

"I'm not actually writing an episode for season five," Martin told EW. "I have this book I have to finish ... I figured I better write the book rather than the episode."

This should make fans happy, considering that some have gone so far as to worry that Martin may even die before he finishes writing the book — a complaint the author responded to by saying, "F-you."

Whether he finishes the book or not, Martin has already told show creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff how the story comes to an end.

In the meantime, Martin is just trying to navigate the crowds at Comic-Con.

"I did walk the floor on Wednesday, the first day that it opened," Martin added. "I have to do the shark philosophy, constantly keep moving, don't stop at any time or you'll be surrounded."

Geek God Joss Whedon Faced An Epic Challenge In This Nearly Silent 'Buffy' Episode

$

Screen Shot 2014 07 17 at 7.41.02 AM

From his early days as a script doctor to his writing and directing of "Marvel's The Avengers," Joss Whedon was known for witty dialogue. But in 1999, during the fourth season of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," he went out of his way to show he could do something more — with extraordinary success.

"Joss resolved to write a 'Buffy' episode that would require him to up his directorial game," writes Amy Pascale in Joss Whedon: The Biography, which comes out on August 1. "His script for 'Hush' would forgo the snappy and innovative dialogue for which he and the show had always been heralded."

Instead, the now-legendary 44-minute episode would be mostly silent.

"Hush" started out like any other "Buffy" episode with the vampire-slaying gang squabbling over college life, dating, and being unable to express their feelings for one another despite talking ceaselessly.

That all changed when some of the pop-horror series' most frightening bad guys, the Gentleman, showed up ad stole the voices of residents of Sunnydale, California, with plans to carve out their hearts, too.

The Gentlemen, Hush, Buffy

"I wanted something scary and kind of dream like," Whedon said in a behind the scenes featurette on the episode. "The idea that something like that is floating at me and I can't scream is a creepy child story dream."

The silent ghouls were unforgettably portrayed by professional mines. In particularly creepy moments, they glided across the screen while pulled by hidden wires.

Floating Gentlemen

For most of the episode, Buffy and friends do their best to protect the town without being able to speak.

"For Joss, this was one of the scariest things he could write," Pascale writes. "To strip away a form of communication we often misuse and take for granted and explore how easy it is to slip into isolation without it."

Despite their difficulties, the gang find it in some ways easier to communicate than they could when they were speaking without listening at the beginning of the episode. Notably, Buffy and romantic interest Riley find the wherewithal to share their first kiss.

The episode's lack of verbal communication doesn't stop Whedon's wit from shining through.

"What isn’t obvious from the shivery recollection by fans, critics, and colleagues is just how very funny the episode is," writes Pascal. "Each character has a particularly amusing reaction to the realization that they have lost their voices."

Buffy, Willow, HushXander, Spike, BuffyNot to mention, the many funny misunderstandings that take place throughout the episode.

Xander, Buffy, Killing Part 1

Xander, Buffy, Killing part 2

Though "Hush" didn't have much dialogue, it was far from silent. The episode includes one of the series' most sinister soundtracks. Whedon and composer Christopher Beck used the episode's score (which can be heard below) to pay homage to the music of silent films and add another layer of dread.

"Hush" was loved by both fans and critics when it first aired.

"In addition to being one of the scariest episodes of TV ever produced, 'Hush' showcases everything that makes 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' one of the best shows of all time," wrote Screen Crush's Jacob Hall, who ranked it in the top ten episodes of the series.

The episode also garnered the series' only Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series — a fact that speaks volumes to Whedon's brilliance considering that the forty-four-minute episode only had seventeen minutes of actual dialogue.

Dwayne Johnson, The ESPYS

During his wrestling days, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was known as the "People's Champion."

But thanks to franchises like "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and "Fast and the Furious," Johnson is now better known as Hollywood's box office champion.

In total, his movies have made $4.3 billion worldwide, which helped make him Forbes' top-grossing actor of 2013. This year, he ranked No.2 after pulling in a whopping $52 million.

This weekend, he appeared in Brett Ratner's "Hercules," which beat tracking estimates to bring in $29 million opening weekend.

Here's how Dwayne Johnson went from WWE wrestler to one of the top-grossing stars in the film industry.

Before he was "The Rock," Dwayne Johnson was born May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California.

Source: Biography

Wrestling is in Johnson's blood. His father, Rocky "Soul Man" Johnson, was a member of the first African American tag-team champions and his grandfather, Peter Maivia, was of the first Samoan wrestlers.

But Johnson's first sport was football. After being a high school star, he joined college football team, the Miami Hurricanes. Over his tenure at the school, Johnson only started once but appeared in 39 games, had 77 tackles, and was a part of the 1991 national championship team.

Watch The Eerie New Teaser Trailer For 'The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies'

Warner Bros. just released the first teaser trailer for the final film in the "Hobbit" series, "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and it is chilling.

While there's some great action scenes, most of the trailer is pretty grim with heroes like Gandalf lying on the field of battle, and Bilbo recounting that he'll remember the whole journey especially those that don't make it home.

The most eerie part of the new trailer is the singing of what sounds like Pippin's rendition of "Mist and Shadow" from the "Return of the King."

"The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" finishes its epic journey when it hits theaters December 17th.

Jerry Seinfeld Gives 2 Smart Pieces Of Career Advice

$

jerry seinfeld

The sitcom "Seinfeld" has been a regular at the top of critics' lists of the greatest shows of all time since it wrapped in 1998, and has brought in over $3 billion in revenue due to its second life in syndication.

Its star, comedian Jerry Seinfeld, has cemented his career as one of the most successful standups ever, and recently finished the fourth season of his current show, "Comedian In Cars Getting Coffee."

A few days ago, Seinfeld took to Reddit for an "Ask Me Anything" session where he fielded fans' questions. Along the way, he offered some valuable career advice for young professionals.

A Reddit user asked Seinfeld what advice he would give to the upstart version of himself, and Seinfeld replied, "I would say the advice I would give myself, or any young person, would be, "Keep your head up in failure, and your head down in success."

Seinfeld followed up that answer by saying that the worst advice you could give to a new comedian, or any young professional, is that "you have to do more to promote yourself. That's the worst advice. The best advice is to do your work, and you won't have to worry about anything else."

He also mentioned that one of the lowest points in his career came before he had even made a name for himself. He writes:

At one point, in the early 80s, I got a part on a sitcom called "Benson." And I was on the show for three episodes, and then I got fired. And I thought that would be the only break I was ever going to get. It was just a youthful lack of perspective. But at the time, I thought that was it. But it really ended up making me really get into being a much better standup comedian so that I wouldn't be dependent on other people. It ended up being a good thing. The best things in my life have been the bad things that taught me stuff.

Seinfeld uses the rest of the Q&A session to share some behind-the-scenes details of his shows, like his favorite scene to shoot on "Seinfeld" and how scared Ricky Gervais was as Seinfeld's passenger in "Comedians In Cars." He even alludes to the possibility of "Seinfeld" streaming on Netflix in the near future.

Futuristic Box Office Hit 'Lucy' Has A Ridiculous Ending That's A Major Tech Fail

scarlett johannsson

The top box office hit this past weekend was Lucy, a sci-fi thriller starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman about a woman who learns to use 100% of her brain.

It's a cool concept with a laughably outdated ending.

(SPOILER ALERT: We're about to tell you what happens. Stop reading now if you plan to see it)

At the end of the movie, Johansson, a hard-partying college student, is able to utilize 100% of her brain and she transforms into an immortal being. But before she does, she agrees to give neurologist, Morgan Freeman, a file with everything she's learned about the brain on it. Thanks to her advanced brain, Johansson can control people, objects and travel through time.

Johansson transforms into a futuristic computer. That's when the movie starts to stumble from a technology standpoint.

Her computer decides to give Freeman all its files on a USB flash drive, a device reminiscent of the 2000s. Flash drives are rapidly losing relevance to cloud computing services produced by companies like Google, Box, and Dropbox. Cloud computing makes files accessible on any device, anywhere simply by logging into the web services or desktop products. There's not much need to carry around physical thumb drives anymore.

After Johansson gives Freeman the antiquated flash drive, she then sends a text message to a French detective in the room that reads, "I am everywhere" to show she's immortal.

That'd be ok, except the detective owns another old piece of technology, a flip phone.

Here's are the screengrabs from the movie's final scenes, via YouTube.

Prince scared face

Before "Tik Tok" singer Ke$ha was a multi-platinum selling artist, the 27-year-old was just a struggling musician searching for her big break.

In hopes of getting her music into the right hands, Ke$ha made a bold move by sneaking into Prince's house to drop off her demo.

"It was so easy," she told Jimmy Fallon on the "Tonight Show." "I cruised up in my dead grandpa's car, and I get out and there's a gardener in the front yard so I was like, 'Here's $5 and don't make a thing about it, I'm just going to slide right under this gate,' and he just laughed and thought it was funny and that I was charming."

What happened next is pretty crazy. As Ke$ha told Jimmy Fallon:

Kesha Ke$ha

"So I snuck under the fence and then I just trolloped up the mountain and the door was open, it was unlocked  which was basically an invitation, so I walked in and everything was purple velvet, so I was very pleased that my fantasy had come true and that there was, in fact, purple velvet everywhere.

I walk into the elevator, and there is Prince music playing! And then I go up in the elevator and I come out, and I'm on the phone with my mom saying, 'I think I may get arrested,' and then I walk out, and there's Prince playing the guitar, with a beanie on, and I almost pooped my pants.

He just kind of looked at me funny. He gave me a look like, 'Who the hell are you?' and I waved around my CD, I put it on the table, and then I ran away."

Ke$ha confirmed she has "not yet" heard back from Prince.

When Richard Branson was 16, he started a magazine called "Student."

Six years later, he opened up a recording studio. The company's first song — a track called "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield — stayed on the U.K. charts for 247 weeks.

The Virgin empire had begun.

Now at 64, Branson is equal parts man, myth, and legend. His Virgin Group is composed of 400 companies, employs 60,000 people, and operates in more than 30 countries. He has an estimated net worth of $5 billion.

Branson also has a flair for the dramatic. He's crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a hot air balloon and kite-surfed across the English Channel.

To gain an understanding of the adventurous, wildly successful entrepreneur, we combed through his talks, interviews, and profiles. Here's what we found.

On entrepreneurship

Justin Bieber and Orlando Bloom got into quite the altercation early Wednesday morning while both were partying at Cipriani restaurant in Ibiza, Spain.

According to exclusive video and interviews with eyewitnesses, TMZ reports Bloom "delivered a right hand shove to Bieber's face, though Bieber's bodyguard appears to deflect the brunt of the blow."

Watch it go down below:

The feud is allegedly over Bieber, 20, getting too close to 37-year-old Bloom’s then-wife Miranda Kerr in 2012. The actor seemingly retaliated by hanging out with Selena Gomez earlier this year.

Bloom and Kerr separated in October 2013, in the time between the two events. Bieber and Gomez have also since split. (image below via TMZ).
