Jon Stewart Perfectly Mocks Liberals Who Deny Science

Ignorance isn't limited by political boundaries.

While some anti-science conservatives have been known to deny the facts of climate change, Jon Stewart had another target in mind on a recent show: the generally liberal, upper-middle-class, highly educated parents who make bogus claims about vaccines being dangerous — and put lives at risk by doing so.

Last week on the Daily Show, correspondent Samantha Bee spoke with Dr. Paul Offit, the director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, who explained that we're seeing a resurgence of diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella in coastal progressive enclaves like California, Oregon, and New York. In places like this, thousands of parents are choosing not to vaccinate their children, against all scientific evidence.

"It's happening in my community?" asks Bee. "People who.... juice?"

Exactly.

Bee also talks with lifestyle blogger and anti-vaxxer Sarah Pope, who gives some classic responses of those who straight-up deny scientific facts based on nothing but their own beliefs.

"You can line up the doctors from here to down the block refuting me, and I'm not going to change my mind," she said.

Pope says she thinks that the historic decline in diseases like measles and polio couldn't have been due to vaccines, and instead must have been caused by some other factor, like getting horses off the streets.

Here's a chart that shows why she's wrong:

Vaccine efficacy chart

"The good news about vaccines," says Offit, "is that they're not a belief system. They're an evidence-based system."

Bee went on a mission to see how misinformation about vaccines spreads, from bloggers like Pope to liberal enclaves to celebrities like Jenny McCarthy, who, despite their dangerous and wrong anti-vaxxer beliefs, are given space on national television.

sam bee chases vaccine denial

Of course, once people decide they're going to believe something no matter what the evidence says, it's hard to change their mind. On her blog, Pope refers to Offit as Dr. Paul "Awful" and claims vaccines are "full of toxins."

Unfortunately, if these science deniers can't be convinced any other way, there's one thing that might get the truth across to them. As Dr. Offit says, "I think, sadly, the only way that this gets better is when we start to see more and more outbreaks."

Measles cases, by the way, are currently at an 18 year high.

"So there is a cure for science denial," says Bee. "Once Florida is underwater and we all have polio, it'll be better."

the cure for deniers

Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Here's Why A Smart, Big-Budget Movie With Two Hot Stars Bombed

$

emily blunt tom cruise edge of tomorrowEditor's note: This post originally appeared on Quora, in answer to the question, "Why did 'The Edge of Tomorrow' bomb at the box office in the U.S.?" We have republished the answer with permission from the author.

Determining the root causes of box office failure or success is complicated. If it wasn't, only successful movies would be released. There will likely be a lot of discussion about this, both in Hollywood and at water coolers everywhere. Let's take a look at a few of the factors that might be mentioned.

DEMOGRAPHICS

The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) annual demographics study reveals the following:
Screen Shot 2014 06 09 at 7.05.38 PM

Edge of Tomorrow is PG-13. That doesn't restrict parents from taking their kids to see the movie, but it does give an edge to one of the two films that beat Edge of Tomorrow, that being Maleficent.

It's still early, so the numbers being released are weekend estimates, but they show Edge of Tomorrow's demographics to be 61% male, 11% under-18, 27% under 25, and 73% over 25 years old.

Those numbers indicate the film did not attract the large teen/young adult female audience.  Instead, they were drawn to The Fault in Our Stars.  That film was the number one film of the weekend, opening at $48,200,000 in the United States.

Edge of Tomorrow had a rather high percentage of its opening weekend audience be over 25 years old.  That might say something about the age of its star.  Although the man doesn't appear to age like normal human beings, Tom Cruise will turn 52 in less than a month.

TOM CRUISE AS A BOX OFFICE DRAW

main qimg 08ace9dec17d8d93d685548c1032e365

The star system is not what it was. It used to be that the name on the poster was a safe indicator of a film's fate.  People would go to the theater knowing nothing more about a film other than it starred Clark Gable, John Wayne, Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Tom Cruise. That's not really true anymore. But let's look at Tom's box office record.

SCIENCE FICTION AS A BOX OFFICE DRAW

2main qimg f7f2ac512937f08c919f20a3a8f485d1

Over the last 10 years, it's pretty clear that in the US, to approach $200 million in box office, for a science fiction film, your film has to be tied to a known factor.  Three of the five films to exceed $200 million were franchise films.  One was a Pixar film (all Pixar films exceed that number).  The fifth was a James Cameron film and a brilliantly marketed phenomenon.

So, unfortunately (very unfortunately for us sci-fi nerds), it is an uphill battle to get a new sci-fi movie to succeed.  And, since sci-fi movies tend to be very expensive to make, that pretty much dooms the genre.

POOR MARKETING

Take a look at these posters.  Don't they all look like they could be advertising the same movie?  The trailers tend to be even worse.  They're big summer popcorn movies so the people that produce the trailers feel they need to emphasize the bigness via the explosions and incredible CGI artifices.  That makes them look similar.  And then put them all into a mildly dystopic world (which as we all know means they must use a blue-tinted palette) and they all still look alike.

If I thought Prometheus, After Earth, Pacific Rim, and Elysium were all disappointments, why would I rush out to see Edge of Tomorrow?  I was pleasantly surprised with Oblivion, but I also waited until it came to iTunes.

Edge of Tomorrow (gah what a boring title) is a smart film. But the trailers don't indicate that. They indicate it is another "men in robot suits bang into each other" film. Pacific Rim convinced me I never need to see another "men in robot suits bang into each other" film. The trailers do hint at an interesting idea - a man keeps reliving a day until he gets it right.  But I think in the fast cuts and booms of explosions, that goes over a lot of heads.

I almost wish the trailer had just been a black screen like this:

d

That sounds cool.

THE FADING ALLURE OF THE CINEMA

Ken talks about the magic of the cinema experience.  I'm with him - it can be a great experience.  There are films I have to see in the theatre.  The immense screen, the thundering sound, the amplification of a shared experience.  The event that can't be waited for.

All of that is great.  But, with that often comes: The ass-hats texting on their cell phones.  The outrageous cost.  The talking ass-hats.  The chair-kicking ass-hats.  The awful stench of artificially buttered popcorn and synthetic cheese nachos.  The having to get there 45 minutes early to get a decent seat.  None of that happens in my game room.

That means films do have to work to justify seeing them in the theater.  Edge of Tomorrow didn't work very hard to make that case to the audience.

SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER FATIGUE

I love blockbusters. But it's only June and it feels like we've had a full summer worth of them.

Taylor Swift Made Ed Sheeran A Very Intricate Drake-Themed Needlepoint

If Taylor Swift says needlepoint is cool, we should believe her.

The pop idol — who has dabbled in the world of arts and crafts before — apparently made her friend, singer Ed Sheeran, a Drake-themed needlepoint to hang in his home.

Callie Buesman at Jezebel points out that the gift is featured in the MTV documentary "9 Days and Nights of Ed Sheeran," which Buesman watched.

She writes,

This is a needlepoint drawing of Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift scaling some stairs. They started at the bottom, and now they're here — sort of in the middle of the stairs, having a melodic conversation about "CATS" and "LEGOS."

Sigourney Weaver will be back for all three "Avatar" sequels in a new role, 20th Century Fox announced late Monday.

The news may come as a surprise since Weaver's character, Grace Augustine, was killed in James Cameron's 2009 film.

However, Cameron says Weaver will return as a "more challenging character" in the upcoming sequels.

“Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made 'Aliens,'” said Cameron in a studio statement. “We're good friends who've always worked well together, so it just feels right that she's coming back for the Avatar sequels.”

Weaver will reteam with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang.

"Avatar" became the highest-grossing film ever making $2.8 billion at theaters.

The next three films are due out December 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Why 'The Fault In Our Stars' Author Wrote A Fictional Book About Cancer

the fault in our stars poster

"The Fault in our Stars" had a huge opening weekend at the box office this weekend.

The adaptation of the best-selling novel by John Green follows a young teen diagnosed with cancer who goes about living her life as normally as she can.

Though the book is inspired by a young woman who lost her battle with thyroid cancer, the story is a work of fiction.

Recently, we caught up with Green and asked about his decision to write a fictional book about cancer.

To research the book, Green says he spoke with a lot of people familiar with the disease, reading a lot of material on the subject.

john green the fault in our stars"It was very important to me to talk to a lot of people who were living with cancer or who had children, other family members, die of cancer," said Green. "I also talked to a lot of oncologists and I read a lot about the disease. I read a lot of memoirs, textbooks about the disease so that I could try to understand it."

Ultimately, Greene says his decision behind writing the book was to write about illness.

“I guess I wanted to show that people living with illness are also doing many other things," Green told us. "They aren’t entirely defined by their illness or by their disability. A lot of times I think that, from the outside, maybe we imagine sick people as being defined by their illness or as being simply, merely sick. Particularly people who are dying. My experience has always been, that the people who are chronically ill are also many other things. They’re capable of love and they have all the same desires as other people. Their lives are every bit as rich and complex and important and meaningful as any others."

"One of the really difficult things about doing this is that it can be socially isolating," Green added. "So in addition to having to deal with the physical effects of illness and disability you also have to deal with the social stigma and that's really unfortunate."

Matthew McConaughey Is Open To A 'True Detective' Return

Matthew McConaughey True Detective

Even though HBO hasn't officially renewed True Detective yet, there is still plenty we know about the seemingly-inevitable Season 2.

Season 1 stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson will not be returning as Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, with the season to focus on a completely different case with a new cast of characters.

While we wait for any official news from HBO, Matthew McConaughey revealed in a new interview that he signed on to do the show because it was only a one-season commitment, but now he is open to coming back.

When asked if he was always just set to star in one, eight-episode season, Matthew McConaughey revealed he would not have signed on if HBO wanted to lock him in for two or three years.

"That was always how I saw it. One season, eight episodes, a finite beginning, middle and end, goodbye, look forward to watching it. If HBO had wanted an option on me for a season 2 or 3, I wouldn't have done it. I wouldn't have walked into something where they could say, 'We've got you for the next three years.'"

However, after working with series creator Nic Pizzolatto and director Cary Fukunaga, both of whom wrote and directed all eight Season 1 episodes, the actor revealed he would be open to returning.

"I liked True Detective the whole series and the experience of making it, so much that I'd be open to doing another one now. At the time, I was looking at six months and not beyond that. I don't know of a feature film I'd sign for where I'm going to say, 'If this works, you've got me whenever you want me for the next three years.'"

The actor also spoke about how the first two scripts drew him to sign on.

"I read those first two episodes, and the quality was so apparent, and had such an identity to it that even without reading the final six episodes, I felt this was going to be hard to screw up. The voices were so clear, if the writer just stays on this path, it was going to be hard to wreck this train. Maybe twice did I take a film project where I wasn't happy with the entire script when I signed on. When you hear, 'Here are some great ideas, here is what I want to do,' I'm always like, 'Show me on paper.' With this guy, I read two scripts and could feel he knew exactly what this show was."

However, he was initially sought out to play the Marty Hart character, although he was more drawn to Rust Cohle, while discussing how the series felt like one, very long movie.

"The only thing was, they wanted me for the Marty Hart part, and I liked the Rust Cohle part. The director, Cary Fukunaga, well I was a big fan of Sin Nombre. The fact that it was going to be those two, Nic and Cary, through all eight episodes? I would have been more scared if I was going to do something on TV with different directors and writers coming in. One director, one showrunner for a finite series made it feel like I was making a 450-page movie. As for TV, you don't feel you are walking the plank anymore. The quality of drama on the small screen often surpasses the quality on the big screen now. I wasn't approaching this thinking, 'What is my image going to be and how might it change?' It was, 'Let me find quality, and then go and do quality.'"

While no cast members have been confirmed for Season 2, it has been rumored that Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain are being sought for roles. We also reported last month that Season 2 will feature three lead actors, and will be set in "lesser-known" areas of California. Nic Pizzolatto revealed in that report that casting will begin this month.

Would you like to see Matthew McConaughey come back as Rust Cohle in True Detective? Chime in with your thoughts below.

Sony Completely Dominated Microsoft At This Week's E3 Video Game Conference (SNE, MSFT)

sony e3 press ps4

After Microsoft’s press conference earlier in the day Monday, all eyes were on Sony, the current market leader in the next-gen console race, to deliver at its E3 press conference Monday night with enough PlayStation 4 content to keep gamers sated for the next year.

Sony stepped up to the plate, and then some. The company’s press conference was filled with exciting announcements including several welcome surprises.

Counting them all up, Sony made roughly 25 truly significant announcements at last night's event. Games-wise, Sony offered a little bit of every genre, from action/adventure games ("Far Cry," "The Order: 1886," "Metal Gear Solid V") to horror games ("Bloodborne," "Dead Island 2") to artistic games anyone could play ("Entwined" and "Abzu").

Sony also brought plenty of attention to the big-name franchise games on the horizon. "LittleBigPlanet 3" will be a sure-fire hit this holiday season, while the classic fighting game "Mortal Kombat" is back with a vengeance for "Mortal Kombat X." The action franchise "Uncharted" will return in 2015 with "Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End," and then there's "Batman: Arkham Knight" coming later this year, which looks absolutely stunning. The shadows, the rain, the action, the villains, and yes — finally — the Batmobile (taking on a group of tanks, no less). It’s all glorious.

Batman Car Fly

Sony is also brushing up some classics just for the PS4. "The Last Of Us" and "Grand Theft Auto V," two of the most successful and popular games from last year, will be remastered for their respective releases in 2014, while Tim Schafer and the Double Fine crew are bringing back the neo-noir cult classic adventure game, "Grim Fandango," just for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita owners.

There were some surprises too — chief among them was "No Man's Sky," which could be the sci-fi game to end all sci-fi games. "No Man’s Sky" drops you on a random planet in an infinite procedural universe — no two players in the game will start on the same planet, guaranteeing a unique experience for every gamer. And since everything is procedural, there are no loading times as you traverse entire planets and hop in your rocket ship and fly to other planets or engage in space battles.

Sony could've stopped at its impressive game lineup, but the company kept its foot on the gas. Some hardware announcements: The company will sell a special white PlayStation 4 as a bundle with "Destiny," the next big sci-fi franchise from "Halo" creator Bungie coming later this year. Sony will also release its $99 PlayStation TV in the U.S., which lets you stream games from your PS4 to another TV in your house.

In the realm of software, PS4 gamers will soon be able to share their moments through YouTube. The company's game streaming service PlayStation Now is also set to arrive on PS4, and then PS3 and PlayStation Vita shortly thereafter. The service will launch its first beta on July 31.

It took two hours but Sony covered all its bases: Hardware (white PS4, PlayStation TV), software (YouTube, PlayStation Now), and tons of games from every genre: Action, sci-fi, horror, puzzle, adventure, even some abstract stuff. Sony was already leading the next-gen console race, but Monday night’s E3 presser distanced itself from the pack.

white ps4

This isn't to say Microsoft has a bad lineup for Xbox One; quite the contrary, there are several exciting games coming for that console, too: “Sunset Overdrive,” “Evolve,” “Fable Legends,” and of course, plenty of “Halo” titles are all on the way. But with the exception of Halo’s “Master Chief Collection” coming this year, we won’t see a new “Halo” game until late next year — a full two years after the release of the Xbox One. That’s like Nintendo being unable to churn out a new Mario game; the franchise is absolutely central to the console.

Not so with Sony’s PlayStation 4. Sure, it has its stars like Sackboy (he’ll be back in time for Christmas), but if Monday night’s press conference proved anything, it’s that Sony has a substantial balance of power across genres, developers and titles, and a considerable amount of passion, to boot. After its E3 press conference, it looks like Sony’s network is only getting stronger.

The Most Highlighted Kindle Quotes Of All Time

The Hunger Games, Catching Fire

Think no one is judging you when you highlight your book passages in “The Hunger Games”? Think again.

Kindle users can highlight their favorite book passages so they can return to them later, and Amazon keeps track of the most highlighted excerpts (Vox did a neat analysis of the ranking today).

It turns out that Kindle users seriously love Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of "The Hunger Games" series. One of her quotes in “Catching Fire,” the second installment of the series, was highlighted by almost 18,000 readers.

To put that in perspective, that’s twice the number of people who highlighted Jane Austen’s famous opening in “Pride and Prejudice."

Below. are the 10 most highlighted book passages of all time (see the full list here). Aside from two “Pride and Prejudice” quotes, the list is dominated with passages from the “Hunger Games” series.

  1. “Because sometimes things happen to people and they’re not equipped to deal with them.”– “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 17,784 Kindle users)

  2. "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”– “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen (highlighted by 9,260 Kindle users)

  3. “The rules of the Hunger Games are simple. In punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy, called tributes, to participate. The twenty-four tributes will be imprisoned in a vast outdoor arena that could hold anything from a burning desert to a frozen wasteland. Over a period of several weeks, the competitors must fight to the death. The last tribute standing wins.” - “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 9,260 Kindle users)

  4. “It takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart.”“Mockingjay” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 8,833 Kindle users)

  5. “‘I just want to spend every possible minute of the rest of my life with you,’ Peeta replies.”– “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 8,500 Kindle users)

  6. “‘I wish I could freeze this moment, right here, right now, and live in it forever,’ he says.”– “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 8,437 Kindle users)

  7. “Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us."– “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen (highlighted by 8,437 Kindle users)

  8. “Life in District 12 isn’t really so different from life in the arena. At some point, you have to stop running and turn around and face whoever wants you dead.”– “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 8,223 Kindle users)

  9. “‘Having an eye for beauty isn’t the same thing as a weakness,’ Peeta points out. ‘Except possibly when it comes to you.’”– “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 7,900 Kindle users)

  10. “I am not pretty. I am not beautiful. I am as radiant as the sun.”– “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 7,519 Kindle users)

And these are the most highlighted books of all time (see the full list here):

  1. "The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (with Cross-References)" by Crossway Bibles

Nintendo Just Unveiled Its Next 'Legend Of Zelda' Game, And It Looks Stunning

"The Legend of Zelda" is one of Nintendo’s most important franchises, with its action-adventure games spanning several decades and consistently earning near-perfect or perfect scores from critics over the years.

It’s been three years since the last "Zelda" game, but at its E3 Digital Event on Tuesday, Nintendo unveiled the next chapter of the fantasy franchise set to release in 2015. It may not have a name yet, but boy does it look good.

Nintendo’s brief clip showed "Zelda’s" protagonist, Link, sitting atop his fabled horse, Epona, in a vast field overlooking the kingdom of Hyrule, the main setting for the series.

The clip was subtle but showed off several important aspects of the game: For one, it revealed this iteration of "Zelda" would blend the semi-realistic character models from “Skyward Sword” and “Ocarina of Time” with the vibrant, cel-shaded look from “The Wind Waker.”

Link Bow

Nintendo also explained that the entire map of this world could be explored, including the mountains. And in a major departure from the series, Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma said any of it could be perused at any time. In all previous “Zelda” games, players were led from one area to the next in a linear manner.

"As far as what you can do with such a vast field to explore, as soon as those boundaries are removed, it means you can enter any area from any direction," Aonuma said. "So the puzzle-solving in this game begins the moment the player starts to think about where they want to go, how they want to get there, and what they will do when they arrive. This is a clean break from the conventions of past games in the 'Zelda' series, where you had to follow a set path and play through the scenario in the right order."

Thanks to a lack of boundaries, players will be able to explore Hyrule and its surrounding areas to their hearts’ content — but they’ll also have to keep an eye out for powerful monsters that will continually show up, even in the most serene settings.

Link Battle

"As you know from the 'Zelda' series, the world in these games can be quite peaceful," Aonuma said. "However, it is a 'Zelda' game after all so strong enemies will certainly appear, even in this setting. Powerful enemies appearing in such a peaceful world is one of the defining features of the 'Zelda' series."

Real estate listing website Redfin revealed today that rapper, producer, and Beats Electronics tycoon Dr. Dre has listed his Los Angeles home for $35 million.

Dre bought the six-bedroom home back in December 2011 for $15.4 million through a trust, according to property records.

The home spans 9,696 square feet, and looks out onto downtown Los Angeles from the Hollywood Hills.

The music mogul bought Tom Brady and Giselle Bündchen’s Brentwood, Calif., home for $40 million last month. His new house will have a moat, terraces, and an infinity pool.

Apple announced in May that it would buy Dr. Dre's company, Beats Electronics, for a whopping $3 billion. Now the famous rapper and entrepreneur is worth a reported $800 million after the deal — looks like he’s celebrating with a real estate upgrade.

Dr. Dre is selling this six-bedroom mansion for $35 million.

The gated home is in Hollywood Hills West, and has 9,696 square feet with a wine cellar, library, and guest house.

The home also has a covetable flat backyard.

When your first tweet says "I don't tweet all that much" and it's still retweeted over 2,000 times, you know you're a big deal on the internet.

George R.R. Martin, author of "Game of Thrones," joined Twitter on June 9 to a predictably rabid response from fans. Many welcomed him, some suggested ideas for his next book, and others questioned his validity.

Before he was officially verified, Martin's publisher came to his defense:

Martin certainly isn't following any impersonators. Not unlike the typical "Game of Thrones" fan, the author mainly follows the cast of the HBO show, his own Cinema company, and a fan site.

Dave Chappelle Had A Very Honest Description Of What It's Like Walking Away From $50 Million

Dave Chappelle

In 2004, Dave Chappelle was at the top of his industry with his hit "Chappelle's Show" on Comedy Central.

His massive popularity turned into a $50 million contract.

Then he walked away, ending the show and never getting a massive payday.

Tuesday night he talked to David Letterman about what his life has been like in the years since.

Chappelle told a stand-up audience in 2004 that the show was ruining his life and he didn't like having to work so much and take away from time doing stand-up comedy.

Letterman asked him if he ever regrets saying no to a huge sum of money.

Chappelle replied with this anecdote:

"There's not too many people that don't think I'm crazy. So I look at it like this: I'm at a restaurant with my wife. It's a nice restaurant. We're eating dinner. I look across the room and I say, 'You see this guy over here across the room? He has $100 million. And we're eating the same entree. So, OK, fine, I don't have $50 million or whatever it was, but say I have $10 million in the bank. The difference in lifestyle is minuscule. The only difference between having $10 million and $50 million is an astounding $40 million ... Of course I would like to have that money."

He went on to describe how his friends try to give him advice: "They'll be, like, 'Well, you know what Dave, at the end of the day, you still have your integrity.' And that's great, I'll go home and make the kids some integrity sandwiches. It makes no sense at all.

"There's nothing anyone can say," he said. "It's just you do what you feel like you need to do."

Chappelle was frank about the repercussions of his decision to walk away from the show and the millions of dollars that came with it.

"I've felt a variety of ways in the last 10 years. You know, whenever there's something that I'd like to have that I could've afforded that I can't now afford, well then I'm upset about it."

The one perk of leaving that pile of money on the table? Chappelle said he has plenty of free time to do what he wants to do.

Here's How Much It Really Costs To Book Your Favorite Band Or Artist For A Show

A few weeks ago, Priceonomics' Zachary Crockett published a list showing how much bands, singers and artists charge to play concerts at colleges.

Except Crockett couldn't verify the veracity or timeliness of the list, and discovered some rates he found strange: One Direction, Britain's most successful boy band of all time, was only listed at "$150-200k+" per show. The site he sourced the data from Degy Entertainment, no longer appears to list any of the large number of acts that Crockett published listed on its site. Drake only had a minimum of $300,000, and Pharrell only had a minimum $150,000. Degy did not return requests for comment.

So we went to CelebrityTalent.net, a site that is able to reach out to managers of the famous to find current booking fees, and which claims to update its list daily, to find a more comprehensive and current list of rates.

Here's how CelebrityTalent introduces the booking process:

The biggest names in music, like Sting, Rihanna, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake, will always ask for over $750,000+ for a US event and even more for an international event. These acts very often turn down offers from buyers they do not know, but CTI as an experienced major name talent buyer, can help you get a name confirmed if a buyer has the budget to confirm the act.

Speakers like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bill Clinton, Tony Blair and Richard Branson, have a speaking fee of over $200,000 and also a private jet needs to be provided or paid for by the client.

The list, which is belowy, is highly revealing.

The first thing to note is just how many different rate brackets there are — 14 in total. It must be quite frustrating to know you haven't been able to break into — or have recently sunk below — the six- or seven-figure range.

On the music side, many of the most important artists of all time, like Bob Dylan (min. $250,000) and Patti Smith (min. $250,000), can be had for an arguably shameful bargain. It also appears possible to order specific band members individually, and it's interesting to see who costs more: Don Henley (min. $250,000) is the most expensive Eagle, followed by Glenn Frey (min. $150,000) and Joe Walsh (also min. $150,000). The band itself costs at least $750,000.

There are also a lot of surprising one-hit wonders, like The Hives and Puddle of Mudd (min. $100,000) that still command a decent premium

Actors are cheaper than bands, and start coming in at $250,000, which will net you people like Ben Stiller, Harrison Ford, and Helen Mirren.

Finally, there appear to be lots of Heisman Trophy winners and Hall of Famers with a lot of free time.

Check it out.
