'Maleficent' Destroyed Seth MacFarlane's Comedy At The Box Office This Weekend

angelina jolie maleficent

Seth MacFarlane's comedy was no match for Disney's "Maleficent" this weekend.

The reimagining of the 1959 animated picture "Sleeping Beauty" starring Angelina Jolie had a huge $70 million opening weekend at theaters.

Worldwide, it took in more than $170 million.

That's the largest opening weekend Jolie has ever had for a film. Previously, "The Wanted" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" held those records with more than $50 million.

The estimated $200 million movie needed a big opening weekend. "Maleficent" came from first time director Robert Stromberg.

It helped that the marketing for the film mirrored previous successes "Oz the Great and Powerful" and "Alice in Wonderland." Each went on to make $493.3 million and $1 billion respectively.

"Maleficent" may have only received decent reviews, but it felt a lot like Disney's current "Once Upon A Time" series on ABC. The show often tells the famous fairytale stories from a villain's point of view to humanize them.

Meanwhile, MacFarlane's "A Million Ways to Die in the West," made $17 million upon opening.

It was thought his comedy may perform a bit better granted "Ted" opened to $54.4 million in 2012. However, reviews did not take kindly to the Western comedy.

Leaked 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Photos Show Off A Giant Monster

One of the biggest fears that "Star Wars" fans have for "Star Wars: Episode VII" is that it will follow in the footsteps of the CGI-heavy prequels.

However, new leaked set photos by TMZ have shown that the new film helmed by J.J. Abrams may be returning to the original trilogy's practical effects roots.

More than 40 photos put out by TMZ show different sets at the Abu Dhabi filming location for the film.

Most fans have concluded that the set stands in for Tatooine, Luke Skywalker's home planet.

Here are a few of the images below. You can check out all of the images on TMZ HERE.

According to TMZ, this monstrous puppet takes five men to operate showing that the production may be going more practical with effects rather than relying on CGI. For fans, this is the most telling leaked image.

Below is what seems to be an engine like set piece. It looks vaguely familiar to an engine that powered the pod races from 1999's "Star Wars: Episode 1 -The Phantom Menace."

Finally, this leaked photo shows a hooded cast member (a Jedi, perhaps?) standing in front of a giant building and what looks to be rusted out landspeeder, one similar to what Luke drove in "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope."

Ann davis brady bunchTV legend Ann B. Davis, who played Alice on "The Brady Bunch," has died at age 88.

According to TMZ, Davis "fell in her bathroom early this morning and hit her head causing grave damage. We're told she never regained consciousness."

Davis' death was sudden considering she was healthy and remained active, said her roommate in Texas.

The actress was best known for her role as
housekeeper Alice Nelson on the original run of "The Brady Bunch" from 1969 to 1974.

She reprised the role in several “Brady” TV movies in the 90s and had a cameo in the 1995 big screen adaptation.

Prankster Tricks Voters Into Actually Believing Angelina Jolie Is Running For Congress

Rep. Angelina Jolie (I-CA)?!

It's not happening, but apparently some gullible Californians think the actress is really running to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman, a Democrat from the Los Angeles area.

Tuesday's primary election to replace Waxman has brought out a host of interesting candidates,  ranging from failed mayoral hopefuls, to radio hosts, and even a prominent New Age guru. To test voter awareness, some jokesters decided to go out and add some fictional candidates to the mix.

"So how do you feel about Angelina Jolie deciding to pursue a career in politics?" an interviewer asks Los Angeles residents in a series of man-on-the-street-style interviews included in a video posted over the weekend.

"I'm very excited! I couldn't believe it when I found out," replies one man.

"Well, she's not doing well in acting, so why not? She's got my vote," says another.

The interviewer proceeds to ask about other fake celebrity candidates, including the man who pioneered the lie-based interview, late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel, and controversial L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

The video was posted on the YouTube channel of Crowdpac, a group that says it aims to promote voter awareness and has focused on the nonpartisan primary race to replace Waxman.

It isn't clear exactly how many Californians were gullible enough to believe Jolie, Kimmel, and Sterling are running. And, of course, with any viral video involving Kimmel and Hollywood, there is also the possibility these are actors instead of actual bystanders.

Update (12:21 p.m.):Reached for comment, Steve Hilton, cofounder and CEO of Crowdpac, said Kimmel helped inspire his group's video.

"People tell us they don't have enough reliable information about politics, and that's one of the problems with the political system that Crowdpac is trying to do something about. Our personalized voting guide uses campaign finance records to help people find the best match on their ballot, because our research shows that political donations are the best guide to what politicians would do if elected," Hilton said in a statement to Business Insider. "We love Jimmy Kimmel's Lie Witness News videos, and we wanted to make our own version to show, in a humorous way, the need for better voter information ... which definitely seems to be the case!"

A Shanghai police officer recently stumbled on an unusual sight  a full-sized replica of Batman's Tumbler Batmobile from "The Dark Knight Rises," according to GB Times. The replica Tumbler was built by a 26 year-old prop maker named Li Weilei, who has managed to turn his love for the caped crusader into a booming business.

How Sunday Night's Awesome 'Game Of Thrones' Battle Came Together

game of thrones viper vs mountain

Warning: There are spoilers ahead if you haven't seen Sunday's episode.

Sunday night's episode of "Game of Thrones" included a battle many fans of the books have been waiting for: The Mountain Vs. The Viper, aka the epic throwdown between Prince Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) and Ser Gregor Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson).

The fight's outcome sealed the fate of Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) who was accused of murdering his nephew King Joffrey earlier this season.

If you're wondering how the gruesome fight was filmed, HBO released a video breaking down how the fight went down.

Björnsson's Mountain character wields a 64-inch sword against Oberyn’s single spear. Since Björnsson is the second-strongest man in the world, Pascal underwent a lot of training beforehand to get in peak physical condition.

“It’s very difficult for the Red Viper to learn the moves because it’s not just a sword, the whole thing’s a bit alien,” said stunt coordinator, Paul Herbert. “We had him do Wushu classes before he came to us. Then, we had a Wushu expert fight with him and learn him about spears to look sharp.”Prince Oberyn game of thrones fight

Wushu is a contact sport based on Chinese martial arts.

"Pedro was very, very good," added Herbert. "He probably had about 40 to 50 moves he would have to learn. So he had three times the amount, four times the amount to learn [than the Mountain.]"

Oberyn's spear consisted of a viper wrapped around the blade with the skin of a python serving as its tassel.

Oprah Was In Serious Negotiations To Buy The Clippers

Oprah WinfreyOprah Winfrey recently revealed that rumors about her trying to buy the Clippers are, in fact, true.

While Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was eventually the highest bidder for the NBA team with his whopping $2 billion offer following the Donald Sterling scandal, Winfrey says she also went back and forth in negotiations.

While on the set of "Selma," the movie Winfrey is producing and starring in about Martin Luther King and Lyndon Johnson, she spoke to "Entertainment Tonight" about thinking it would be "so much fun" to be a team owner.

“I was in the middle of these scenes while making the bid — literally the first day I was going to shoot … I had to run upstairs in the building, find a fax machine — we’re putting in the bid and I’m signing it, and I’m thinking, ‘How ironic is that? I’m playing a woman who can’t get the right to vote, and now you’re putting in a bid [to buy a professional sports team].’”

Ultimately, Winfrey explains that the high price tag wouldn't have been a savvy business decision.

“We went over that number, and then we went over that number again, and by the time we got to the final number [it was no longer] a good business decision. But for me? I was doing it. You know, my lawyers were like, ‘Do you even like basketball?’ I said, Yes, I LOVE basketball! And this is gonna be so much fun!’… I thought it would be entertaining.”

Eventually, Winfrey pulled out of negotiations, saying, “$2 billion — OK, now that’s my limit!”

The only reason the media mogul is happy she didn't win the bid is that now friends won't be hitting her up for tickets all time.

"That’s one reason I’m glad we didn’t get it — because a lot of people would be like, ‘Oprah? Got any Clippers tickets?'"

Layoffs Are Reportedly Coming To Maker Studios, The Company Disney Just Bought For $950 Million (DIS)

$

Maker Studios CEO Ynon Kreiz

Disney is expected to let go of about 10% of the 380 employees at Maker Studios— the multichannel network it just acquired — as early as this week, Variety is reporting, according to insider sources.

"Maker's business is constantly evolving, and we routinely reassess our internal resources and make strategic adjustments, reducing staff in some areas while actively hiring in others," a company rep told Variety in a statement.

Disney bought Maker Studios in March for $500 million. The deal is the largest so far between a studio and YouTube multichannel network; Disney could pay up to $950 million if Maker meets certain goals.

Maker Studios is one of YouTube's largest networks, and the acquisition gives Disney a strong platform to produce online video content. Maker creates content mostly aimed at millennials, and it reportedly receives 5.5 billion views per month across all of its channels.

It's unclear what's prompting the layoffs. Variety speculates: "Cost-conscious Disney could be looking to trim any excess bloat on an expensive acquisition. It’s also possible select positions becoming superfluous thanks to newfound synergies with an owner looking to make its mark on Maker."

But this might signify a new direction that Disney is taking with the channel. Bob Iger said during last month's earnings call:

We see it first and foremost as a distribution platform and a very successful one, one that not only can command more eyeballs, more consumption, but with that more advertising revenue or revenue in general.

...

As we look at it, we believe that by creating access for the Maker people to some of our big brands and characters and storytelling — Star Wars would be a perfect example of that, Marvel, another one — that we can actually allow the Maker people to substantially improve the distribution or the reach of short-form video using these characters and stories, but also add their expertise on the production side.

Michael Jackson's Credit Was So Bad That His iPhone Had To Be Set Up Under Another Name

When the first iPhone came out in 2007, everyone wanted to try Apple's next big gadget — including the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

But the singer may not have had access to the hottest piece of tech if it weren't for his security guard.

In a new book out today, "Remember the Time: Protecting Michael Jackson in His Final Days," two of Jackson's security guards, Bill Whitfield and Javon Beard, reveal what it was like working with the artist during the final years of his life.

The book details how poorly Jackson's financial situation was handled — at one point, Whitfield says he overheard Jackson say he had no idea where his money was or how much he had — and how both guards weren't paid for months on end.

Nevertheless, the star still managed to drop thousands of dollars on FAO Schwarz toy trips and miscellaneous purchases ranging from a nearly seven-foot-tall Tinkerbell replica to $1,000 on a theater display for "The Simpsons Movie."

About halfway through the book, Whitfield recalls how Jackson wanted the iPhone when it first came out.

Whitfield said after Beard stood for two and a half hours in line to make the purchase, he was asked by Jackson to set up the phone.

What should have been a simple task ended up turning into a nightmare.

As Whitfield recalls:

"I had all his personal information, so I said sure. I first tried to set it up in his name, but after running Michael Jackson's Social Security number, AT&T wanted a $1,500 deposit. Just to turn on a cell phone. That's how bad his credit was. I went ahead and set up the account in my name. Then he wanted an iPhone for his mom, so he could send her pictures of the kids. I set up his mother's cell phone in my name too."

Whitfield said eventually Jackson's number was changed and the bill for both phone accounts was never paid.

"The charges had run up close to two thousand dollars, and they got disconnected," said Whitfield.

It looks like the Millennium Falcon is going to be in "Star Wars: Episode VII."

After releasing more than 40 new photos yesterday, TMZ released a new group of photos showing off, what appears to be, the iconic ship used by Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca in the original series.

More than 20 photos show off the ship, what appears to be an X-wing starfighter, one of the ships used to destroy Darth Vader's Death Star, and the giant creature seen yesterday.

According to TMZ, the photos were taken in the UK where the film's props and set pieces are being built.

The Millennium Falcon currently looks like it's under construction.

Whether it will be operational and in use in the new film or rather just a throwback to Solo's days of flying is yet to be seen.

Well, this is a huge bummer. "Batman: Arkham Knight," one of the most-anticipated games of the year, won't be coming out until next year.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment released a new video from the upcoming Rocksteady game Tuesday showing off the full range of the Dark Knight's Batmobile.

This will be the first time players will be able to drive the vehicle in the franchise.

It looks beyond cool.batman batmobile arkham knight

However, the final shot of the video subtly notes the game is being delayed until 2015.batman arkham knight delayed

This is the first news we've heard about the game not coming out this year.

Previously, "Batman: Arkham Knight" was set for an October 14 release. A gameplay trailer out at the end of May teased the game was "Coming Soon" as opposed to fall 2014.

Update: Here's a statement we just received on the game's release:

"Batman: Arkham Knight is the most ambitious title Rocksteady has ever created. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, DC Entertainment and Rocksteady have decided to extend the development of the game to ensure that the trilogy gets the epic conclusion that Batman fans want and deserve."

For now, check out the video along with some stills from Warner Bros. of the upcoming game.

Here are some of the specs on the new Batmobile:

  • 60mm Cannon
  • Vulcan gun to fight against tanks
  • A missile barrage with laser to target up to six bad guys at a time
  • Riot suppressor to "immobilize combatants with minimum long-term trauma

(Note: All of the added weapons seem to go against Batman's no-gun stance.)

Here's what we learned about the game:

Kanye West Had A Great Reaction When He First Met Michael Jackson

Kanye West may not seem like the type of person to get starstruck, but there is one musician who left him speechless.

According to two of Michael Jackson's security guards, Bill Whitfield and Javon Beard, West was completely taken aback when meeting the King of Pop.

In a new tell-all book, "Remember the Time: Protecting Michael Jackson in His Final Days," out June 3, Whitfield and Beard recall a meeting between both Jackson and West when they discussed working on a remix of "Billie Jean" for Jackson's "Thriller 25" anniversary album.

"Once Kanye saw Mr. Jackson, he was the one who was starstruck. He started gushing. 'Oh my God, Mr. Jackson, it's such a pleasure and an honor to meet you. You just don't know. I'm your biggest fan. I love you so much.'"

"The whole time, Kanye was like a kid in a candy store. I've never seen somebody be so humble. To see him that way was surreal. Everybody knows that Kanye can be very arrogant, and here he was, just amazed to be in the same room as Mr. Jackson."

Beard said it was the same way when singer Ne-Yo met Jackson. The R&B artist "couldn't stop shaking."

"Experiences like that made you remember just how special Mr. Jackson was to people," Beard added.

The Fascinating Reason 'Blue's Clues' Host Steve Abruptly Left The Show At The Height Of His Career

Steve Burns Blues Clues Host

"Blue's Clues" was one of the most popular children's shows on Nickelodeon throughout it's decade-long run from 1996-2006.

Steve Burns, who hosted the show, became a major celebrity among the younger crowds and was even nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2001. In 2000, he was named one of People's most eligible bachelors alongside George Clooney and Ben Affleck.

But in 2002, at the height of the show's popularity, the beloved Burns abruptly left "Blues" to "go to college" in his final episode. The actor was actually 29-years-old at the time.

Rumors immediately began to swirl that Burns died of a drug overdose, was a drug addict, or was killed in a car crash.

When I asked a co-worker fan of the show (who shall remain nameless) what she thought happened to Steve, she too had heard he turned to drugs.

Not so, says Burns — who is very much alive  in an interview for Nickelodeon’s special “Behind the Clues: 10 Years with Blue.”

Burns reveals that one of the main reasons he left the show was because he was going bald, and he didn't want that to happen on national televsion in front of his young fans.

"I knew I wasn't going to be doing children's television all my life, mostly because I refused to lose my hair on a kid's TV show," Burns, now 40, said in an interview on the Nick Jr. special.

"And it was happening ... fast," he added.

We went back to early "Blue's Clues" episodes and indeed, Burns had a full head of hair.

That's when Nickelodeon hired 24-year-old Donovan Patton to replace Burns.Steve Blues Clues

Patton had an enviable head of hair that took over "Blue's Clues" until the series finale in 2006.Steve Blues Clues

Since then, Steve Burns has pursued a career in music and has even worked with members of The Flaming Lips to produce his debut album "Songs For Dustmites."

He hasn't appeared much on-camera since "Blue's Clues."

Considering many actors remain on television despite hair changes, something does feel a little fishy.

The FCC's Site Crashed After John Oliver Told Internet Trolls To Speak Out Against Its Net Neutrality Proposal

During his most recent episode of "Last Week Tonight", comedian John Oliver issued Internet trolls a call to arms: quit spewing "badly spelled vile" in comment sections everywhere, and direct that rage toward the FCC's website, where the FCC recently asked the public to comment on its net neutrality proposal.

Oliver joined the contingent of critics who oppose the proposed merger between internet service provider giants Comcast and Time Warner Cable. Many think that such a merger would give Comcast too much control over the internet access and give it an opportunity to favor its own streaming content over its competitors' content.

"We need you to get out there and for once in your lives focus your indiscriminate rage in a useful direction. Seize your moment, my lovely trolls. Turn on caps lock and fly, my pretties," Oliver said, after lampooning Verizon, Comcast, and Time Warner Cable during his net neutrality sketch

And the trolls listened: for several hours yesterday, the FCC's public comment website was down due to "heavy traffic."

The FCC's proposal would allow internet content companies to pay internet service providers (ISPs) for so-called "fast lanes" to consumers. The proposal won't let ISPs slow down internet traffic, but it will give an advantage to rich companies that can afford the fast lanes.

As of today, the FCC's public comment section seems to have recovered. Internet users can share their opinions on net neutrality at the FCC's public comment website or at open internet@fcc.gov.

A 'Game Of Thrones' Actress May Be Giving Away Huge Spoilers On Her Instagram

game of thrones cerseiWARNING: There are major spoilers if you haven't seen Sunday's episode

"Game of Thrones" is one TV's hottest shows right now, so fans are doing whatever they can to avoid spoilers.

If that's the case, fans may want to stay away from actress Lena Headey's Instagram account.

Headey, who plays Queen Cersei Lannister on the series, has been posting photos that many fans see as potential spoilers.

For example, Sunday night's episode involved a brutal battle between Oberyn "The Red Viper" Martell (Pedro Pascal) and Ser Gregor Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson).

It culminated in Oberyn getting his eyes gouged out.

Red Viper, eyes, Mountain game of thronesMany fans think one of Headey's previous Instagrams looks awfully similar to the way Pascal's character met his demise.

Before the episode aired, Headey posted this photo jokingly gouging out fellow cast member Pedro Pascal's eyes two months ago.

The image is from a feature in Hunger Magazine; however, fans noted the similarity was uncanny.

Fans have also been speculating the meaning of another one of Headey's photo posted a month ago. The photo found below is of stones making up a heart shape with the caption "my stone heart."

Warning: MAJOR potential spoiler ahead.

Many fans suspect this as a spoiler for the return of Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) who becomes known as "Lady Stoneheart" in the books after she's brought back to life.

Here's a fun off set photo from Pedro Pascal's account showing the very different sizes of Pascal and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who plays The Mountain on the series.
