Brands Are Wasting Their Money Hiring High-Priced Celebrities To Appear In Ads

This year's Super Bowl ads featured high-profile celebrity appearances from Ellen DeGeneres (Beats Music), Bob Dylan (Chrysler), and Scarlett Johansson (SodaStream), but a new report suggests those brands might have been better off saving their money.

The video technology firm Unruly tracks how and why people share video ads online. It found that just one of the game's five most-shared ads featured a big name endorsing a product. The finding was not limited to Super Bowl ads. Users are generally less likely to share ads in which big stars appear, Unruly found.

That ad was Bud Light's star-studded "Up For Whatever" ad, which was the game's third most-shared ad, and featured appearances from A-listers Arnold Schwarzenegger, Don Cheadle, and Minka Kelly.

Here's Unruly's chart of the top 12 most-shared ads from the Super Bowl. Just three included celebrities:

Most-shared ads from this year's Super Bowl

The report, which you can download here, found that the trend was not limited only to the Super Bowl. In looking at its list of the 100 most-shared video ads of all time, Unruly discovered that only 13 featured celebrities.

The highest-ranking celebrity ad was Jean-Claude Van Damme's "Epic Split" video for Volvo Trucks, which checked in at No. 10.

In general, Unruly advises that big brands should save their celebrity budgets for the halftime show and instead invest in creating high-quality content that people will want to share with their friends.

"Celebrity presence can amplify the sharing effects of an intrinsically shareable online video," the report concluded. "However, celebrity presence alone is not enough to trigger sharing activity."

Alec Baldwin Taken Into Police Custody For Biking On The Wrong Side Of The Road

Alec Baldwin was detained in New York City Tuesday morning after riding his bike the wrong way on Fifth Avenue and 16th street, reports TMZ.

When police stopped the actor, he didn't have identification on him and reportedly “went ballistic on the cops, screaming at them," according to In Touch magazine.

"Law enforcement sources tell us Alec was belligerent with officers while in custody," adds TMZ, "which resulted in his getting a ticket for disorderly conduct  on top of the ticket for riding the wrong way."

Baldwin was then taken to the police station so he could be properly identified.

In Touch Weekly posted a photo of Baldwin being taken into police custody:

An eyewitness told the magazine the actor was “calm and quiet” while he was cuffed and put in the back of the police car, though another onlooker said he “went ballistic” earlier during the altercation.

CNN legal reporter Shimon Prokupecz tweeted:

“The incident just happened, we are waiting for details at this time,” a source with the NYPD told In Touch.

After Failing To Outsell The PS4, The Xbox One Is Getting A $100 Discount (MSFT)

If you've been eyeballing Sony's PlayStation 4 over the Xbox One because of the price difference, Microsoft may have just answered your concerns. The company announced today that a $399 version of its new gaming console will be available on June 9.

This cheaper console won't include the Kinect motion sensor, and now puts the Xbox One at the same price level as the PS4.

Microsoft will also continue to sell the more expensive $499 model, which includes the Kinect.

The decision to offer a lower-priced Xbox comes after the PS4 outsold Microsoft's console for three consecutive months in early 2014, NPD Group video game industry analyst Liam Callahan told CNET in March.

In March, Microsoft announced that it had sold 5 million Xbox One units to retailers, while Sony said it had sold 7 million PS4 consoles to customers by mid-April.

When Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One last year, it flaunted the console  as a central hub for entertainment in your living room. A large part of this was the remote-free aspect of being able to browse between apps and select content just by using your voice.

With its newer Kinect-free option, Microsoft appears to be offering a more affordable choice for those who aren't into the multiplayer party games and touchless controls the Kinect has to offer.

Sony also makes a motion sensor for the PS4 that's similar to the Kinect. You can buy it separately for about $60.

At the same time, Microsoft also announced that Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners will no longer require a Live Gold subscription to access Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, and YouTube.

Bryan Cranston Fans Will Be Disappointed With 'Godzilla'

$

Warning: There are some mild spoilers ahead.

godzilla bryan cranstonWhen you head out to see "Godzilla" this weekend, you probably expect to see a lot of Bryan Cranston in the film.

The "Breaking Bad" actor has been in nearlyeverytrailer for the big-action reboot.

Here you can see him warning us about a giant creature who is set to "send us back to the stone age."

The actor narrates another trailer in which he tells us to keep our families safe, "whatever it takes."

Cranston does significant narration on four trailers and three 30-second spots for the movie. So it's not a big leap to think the actor is probably the main star of the film.

Wrong.

Despite heavy marketing featuring the actor, Cranston's barely in the movie.

The actor shows up for about the film's first third before the movie gets turned over to Aaron Taylor-Johnson ("Kick-Ass"), the film's real lead.

godzilla bryan cranston

It's unfortunate since Cranston is probably the best part of the movie. (We've expanded on this more in our review, here.)

While it's not such a big deal that Cranston isn't the main star, the reason fans may get upset is because it feels like a huge bait and switch.

Of all the 12 trailers and teasers released on the official "Godzilla" YouTube page, Cranston appears prominently in seven of them.

We counted the number of appearances by both Taylor-Johnson and Cranston across those trailers. An appearance includes any time the actor is recognizable in the trailer and is not limited to facial screen time. As an example, it's clear to tell that both this and this are shots of Cranston. This moment, where Cranston's character watches a power plant crumble, may not be as clear and was omitted from our count.bryan cranston godzilla

We found that both actors share just about the same amount of trailer screen time. If the shot above was included in our count, Cranston would have a slight edge.

There was one big hint early on Cranston wouldn't be the movie's main star.

Every other actor in the film received top-billing on the film's poster over Cranston.bryan cranston godzilla poster

It's an incredibly smart move on Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures to put the spotlight on Cranston after his AMC show "Breaking Bad" closed out to record ratings and overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Similarly, DreamWorks' March release "Need for Speed" used its "Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul to sell that movie, too.

Paul was front and center on the film's poster.need for speed poster

And the first trailer for the film even looked like a continuation of the AMC series.

The film didn't perform well at theaters domestically ($43.1 million), but went on to make $202.9 million worldwide. Paul was the most recognizable and marketable star in the film other than Michael Keaton.

Estimates from Boxoffice.com expect "Godzilla" to make north of $75 million opening weekend.

Here's you first image of Ben Affleck as Batman in the new "Batman / Superman" movie.

One day after teasing an image of the new batmobile, director Zack Snyder released an image featuring the Caped Crusader's new ride along with the new Batsuit.

Here's a larger look at the suit and car:batman vs superman batsuit batmobile

What do you think?

The suit looks heavily influenced by Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" comic which features an older Bruce Wayne reprising his role as Batman and facing off against Superman. The Dark Knight Returns

That follows in line with comments Warner Bros.' CEO Kevin Tsujihara made last year saying Affleck's version of the Caped Crusader will be "tired and weary."

It was previously reported Snyder also met with Miller.

Synder has said he will not adapt the four-part graphic novel

The untitled "Batman / Superman" movie will be released May 6, 2016.

Alec Baldwin was one of the most high-profile backers of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio when he ran for office last year. But now that the actor was arrested for biking on the wrong side of the road in Manhattan, he seems very unhappy with the way things are going in the Big Apple. Baldwin shared his frustrations with New York City government in a tweet after his arrest Tuesday.

"New York City is a mismanaged carnival of stupidity that is desperate for revenue and anxious to criminalize behavior once thought benign," Baldwin wrote.

Baldwin also tweeted the badge number of the police officer he said arrested him.

Neither de Blasio's office nor Baldwin immediately responded to requests for comment from Business Insider Tuesday.

Ludacris Still Drives Around In A 1993 Acura Legend

Ludacris Ellen May 2014

Before the multi-platinum albums, the sold-out concert tours, and the Hollywood blockbusters, there was just Chris Bridges and his 1993 Acura Legend.

In spite of all of his commercial success, the rapper-actor, known to most as Ludacris, went on "Ellen" this week and revealed he still drives around in his 21-year-old Acura.

Launched in 1990 as the flagship model of Honda's Acura luxury brand, the Legend is powered by the company's venerable 3.2 litre V-6 engine producing 230 horsepower.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the luxurious Legend sedan sold for a not-so-paltry $36,800 in 1993. After 20 years of depreciation, the car is worth considerably less today. Based on estimates by Edmunds, Ludacris' prized Legend would fetch no more than $2,000 in the used car market.  However, it doesn't look like the entertainer, who, according to Forbes, made $12 million in 2013, is looking to part with his Acura any time soon.

"I used to write music in the Acura. I still write music in the Acura," Ludacris told Ellen, " I will never get rid of this car."

In addition to his prized Acura, the "Fast And Furious" star also owns the private jet pictured with the car above. Based on the photo, the jet looks to be a British Aerospace HS.125-700, also known as a Hawker 700. According to Business Jet Traveller magazine, The Hawker 700 has seating for eight passengers and a range of 2,000 miles. Produced from the late 1970s through the late '80s, used copies of the aircraft can be had for as little as $1.5 million according the same magazine.

Here is a closer look at the Acura Legend and the Hawker 700 (not the models owned by Ludacris).

27 Sentence Diagrams Of Famous Action Film Catchphrases

$

Ever wondered what makes action movies — often cheesy and grandiose — timeless favorites?

Aside from the weapons and explosions, dialogue probably plays a larger role than most think. And like books, word order, vocabulary, and grammatical construction give these lines their power.

Pop Chart Lab created a poster of famous lines from the most well-known action movies ever. Depending on the part of speech and function within the sentence, each word sits on a separate line in a different color.

For example, consider "The Godfather."

first lines The Godfather

"I," is the subject of the sentence, as shown by grey text. The first line in a sentence diagram always represents the subject.

Next comes the verb, "will make." Pink signifies the helping verb "will" while olive green shows the main verb, "make."Because "will make" is an action verb, the diagram separates the verb and the direct object with a straight line. A slanted line (like in "Planet of the Apes") would show a linking verb and its subsequent predicate adjective or nominative.

Adjectives, articles, and other modifiers appear on slanted vertical lines below the words they modify.

A more grammatical version of Don Corleone's words would include an implied "that" — "I'll make him an offer [that] he can't refuse." The word "that" often begins subordinate clauses, as shown by the dotted line connecting the two diagrams.

Selfie ABC Show

ABC announced last week that it had picked up a new comedy titled "Selfie"  the story of a self-obsessed 20-something woman who is more concerned with "likes" than being liked.

"Doctor Who" actress Karen Gillan stars as the self-absorbed Eliza Dooley, who ABC describes as having "263,000 followers who hang on to her every post, tweet and selfie" after being the subject of a humiliating viral video.

"Harold & Kumar" actor John Cho plays Eliza's co-worker Henry, a self-assured marketing expert who decides to "re-market" his friend.

ABC has just released a quick scene from the show and it looks, well, not that promising.

Here's Why George Lucas Didn't Want Harrison Ford To Play Indiana Jones

Indiana Jones, sword fight

Harrison Ford has been acting for nearly 50 years. Breaking into the business was easy for the Oscar nominee, at least at first.

After landing the role of Han Solo in George Lucas' 1977 "Star Wars" while he was still working as a carpenter, Ford found himself the star of a franchise and, in 1980, appeared in "Star Wars Episode V:  The Empire Strikes Back."

But when Ford was up for the lead role in Steven Spielberg's 1981 Indiana Jones flick, "Raiders of the Lost Ark," getting the part wasn't as easy.

"Star Wars" creator George Lucas happened to cowrite "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and didn't want Ford to appear in yet another one of his films.

"I said, 'Oh, Steven. He's been in two of my movies. I don't want him to be my Bobby De Niro,'" Lucas said in a making-of featurette.

So with Lucas not wanting Ford to be in all of his projects  in a way that's similar to how Robert De Niro has been in many of Martin Scorsese's movies — the production set up a screen test with a fresher face: Tom Selleck.

Watch Selleck's screen test as Indiana Jones below:

Let's watch part of that again.tom selleck indiana jones

Both Lucas and Spielberg thought Selleck was perfect for the part and were ready to shoot with him as the lead. Unfortunately for Selleck, the actor had already filmed a pilot for a CBS detective show called "Magnum P.I." and couldn't get out of the contract.

"[Spielberg and Lucas] held the offer out for about a month," Selleck told the Late Show With David Letterman. "The more they held out the offer and talked to the network the more the network said no ... so I had to kind of move on."

"Magnum P.I." would eventually get picked up — it even won Selleck an Emmy — but it was nothing compared to the $1.8 billion franchise that the Indiana Jones series would go on to be.

And while Lucas may have initially not wanted Ford for the role, in retrospect Lucas said, in a bonus feature for the film, that "He was perfect for the part. I can't imagine anybody else in that part."

Jimmy Kimmel Rips Apart Fox's New Batman Show 'Gotham'

ABC just showed off its new fall shows for advertisers.

After previewing its new series, the network brought out late-night host Jimmy Kimmel.

While he joked about ABC's fourth-place standing among networks at the end of the current season, he also took a huge dig at Fox’s upcoming Batman prequel series, “Gotham.”

“This is a show for people who love everything about Batman except Batman,” said Kimmel.

The series, which has a 16-episode order from Fox, will follow a young Bruce Wayne after the death of his parents.

“You know the part of every Batman movie that’s so boring, they skip over it? Now that’s a series,” Kimmel added. “We'll get to see the Dark Knight’s testicles descend every week."

On Monday morning, during Fox’s programming conference call, broadcast chairman Kevin Reilly predicted “Gotham” would be the biggest show of the season.

Reilly also made comments about ABC’s struggles with Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” saying "Gotham" offers "actual franchise characters" as opposed to the other superhero show.

Accuser's Past Testimony Might Discredit Rape Allegations Against 'X-Men' Director Bryan Singer

Bryan Singer

There might be a flaw in Michael Egan's account of being raped by "X-Men" director Bryan Singer in Hawaii. According to a decade-old deposition, Egan has never even been to Hawaii, Buzzfeed reports.

Egan filed a lawsuit last month in Hawaii claiming that Singer and others drugged and raped him at a mansion in the state in 1999 when he was underage. But he swore under oath in 2003 that he has never left the continental U.S.

He also alleged sexual abuse by Singer in California, but many of the supposed acts took place in Hawaii.

In the deposition obtained by Buzzfeed, Egan explained that he went on smaller trips within the continental U.S., but that his mother never let him travel far away.

Egan's lawyer, Jeff Herman, told Buzzfeed: "I’m not sure how he interpreted the continental United States."

Despite what Egan said in the deposition, his mother apparently told Herman that she had authorized two trips to Hawaii.

Singer has denied the sexual abuse allegations.

I like video mashups as much as the next person, but it's not often that I listen to one all the way through. Or ask a coworker to come check it out.

But then I came across "Video Game of Thrones: Super Mario World."

YouTube user NicksplosionFX remade the opening credit sequence of HBO's "Game of Thrones" as if it were set in the World of Super Mario. He even found an 8-bit version of the iconic "Game of Thrones" theme song.

The opening sequence for "Game of Thrones" changes every week, highlighting the places that will be included in that episode. I wouldn't know, I usually fast-forward the intro. But if it looked a little more like this, I probably would be more apt to watch.

Here's How The Military Would Actually Fight Godzilla

godzilla attacks bridge

When "Godzilla" roars into theaters this Friday, cinema's greatest monster will go up against the world's largest military, the U.S. armed forces.

But how much of a chance would the U.S. military actually have against a 355-foot tall radioactive Godzilla

To find out, we spoke with the film's Military Technical Advisor, retired Sgt. Maj. James Dever and asked how the U.S. military would hypothetically take on the monster, and, more importantly, whether they could do it.

"The military would be very successful," said Dever. "With the manpower and the equipment we have, we'd definitely be successful in taking down Godzilla."

"The armed forces would use all their means," he added. "The Air Force would use their F-15's and F-16's... Marine Corps with their F-18's and Harrier Jets, the United States Navy with their F-18's and aircraft carriers. If that didn't work, the ground troops would be moved in using the M1 Abrams tanks."

military godzilla san franciscoEven though Dever predicted the military would win out in the long run, he did see two complications that would pose the most difficulties: Godzilla's fiery "Atomic Breath" and the battle taking place in a densely populated city.

In the movie, Godzilla eventually surfaces in San Francisco.

"Once he's in the city our major concern are all the civilians," said Dever. "The military would put their combined effort to move all the civilians out before we could engage him."

While Godzilla would realistically take on all branches, the movie primarily focuses on the U.S. Navy.

Many scenes in the film take place on aircraft carriers and the movie's main protagonist, Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is a Navy lieutenant.

aaron taylor johnson godzilla

According to Dever, the use of the Navy makes sense given its use of ships, sonar, and submarines would have the best advantage at tracking and taking down the amphibious monster.

"They [The Navy] have the advantage of tracking and following in the air and in the seas," Dever told us.

Another pressing question in a real-life battle with Godzilla would be if the U.S. would consider using a nuclear weapon especially considering the monster's radioactive history.

Dever said it may be an option if the military felt it could work. However, the ultimate decision would come from the President and would only be used after civilians were evacuated.

Atomic Bomb, Godzilla

He added that even though the battle would be unlike any other, it wouldn't be too long before Godzilla was eventually destroyed.

"It's not a known thing fighting monsters," said Dever. "But we'd give it our best, and hope he would go down in a day or two."

Oscar-Winning ‘Searching For Sugar Man’ Director Commits Suicide At 36

Malik Bendjelloul

Swedish filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul won the Oscar this year for best documentary with his debut feature, Searching for Sugar Man," about a mysterious Detroit musician named Rodriguez who was unknown in the U.S. but a 1970s legend in South Africa.

Despite his recent success, Bendjelloul's brother, Johar Bendjelloul, confirmed to a Swedish newspaper that the 36-year-old director had taken his own life Tuesday in Stockholm.

Johar told the AP that his brother “struggled with depression.”

“Life isn't always easy,” Johar continued. “I was with him all the time towards the end.”

A novice filmmaker when he started filming "Sugar Man," Bendjelloul edited the film in his Stockholm apartment and paid for most of it himself. The indie documentary has gone on to make nearly $4 million at the box office.

"Bendjelloul spent four years working on the documentary, which was initially planned as a seven-minute piece for Swedish TV," explains The Wrap. "The project took on a life of its own before Sony Pictures Classics spent mid-six-figures to acquire the film out of Sundance in 2012."

Bendjelloul, who was able to track down and interview "Sugar Man" Sixto Rodriguez for his film, told The NY Times of the experience: “This was the greatest, the most amazing, true story I’d ever heard, an almost archetypal fairy tale. It’s a perfect story. It has the human element, the music aspect, a resurrection and a detective story.”

Simon Chinn, who produced “Sugar Man,” told the AP that he was shocked by the death.

“It seems so unbelievable,” he said. “I saw him two weeks ago in London. He was so full of life, hope and optimism and happiness, and looking forward to the future and future collaborations. We were talking about working together and talking about specific ideas, so the idea that he is no longer is just too hard to process.”

They've looked at everything from "Star Wars" to "Batman & Robin," and even "Frozen." They're all pretty spot-on, picking out obvious plot holes and coincidences you may not notice in big Hollywood blockbusters.

This week, ahead of the new "Godzilla" film, Screen Junkies released an Honest Trailer for Sony's heavily panned 1998 adaptation of the monster. It's a must-see if you're heading out to see the new version this weekend.

1998's "Godzilla" went on to make $379 million worldwide, so it wasn't a total box-office bust; however, Sony's picture was trashed by both critics and audiences. (The movie sits at 25% on Rotten Tomatoes.)

The film is such a taboo topic that at the New York City press junket for the new film, actor Ken Watanabe told us they don't speak about the 1998 movie.
