'Game Of Thrones' Creator George R.R. Martin Shares His Creative Process

George R.R. Martin has created a swords and sorcery world that people can't get enough of: The "A Song of Ice And Fire" series has sold 24 million copies in print, while the HBO adaptation has been a huge hit, too — the premier of season four brought in 6.6 million viewers, the most for a premium channel since "The Sopranos" went off the air.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Martin shared details on his creative process. Strikingly, they mirror lots of entrepreneurial wisdom. Here's a look behind the scenes at how Martin works.

It's not about ideas.

When asked where his imagination came from, Martin replied that "ideas are cheap."

"I have more ideas now than I could ever write up," he says. "To my mind, it's the execution that is all-important."

This is the same philosophy held by the late tech innovator Steve Jobs, who said thinking that a great idea is 90% of the work is completely wrong. "There is just a tremendous amount of craftsmanship in between a great idea and a great product," he said.

It's not about originality.

Creativity isn't about having the most orginal idea ever. Instead, it's a matter of combining what already exists.

"You look at Shakespeare, who borrowed all of his plots," Martin says. "In 'A Song of Ice and Fire,' I take stuff from the Wars of the Roses and other fantasy things, and all these things work around in my head and somehow they jell into what I hope is uniquely my own."

Apple, again, provides a killer example. The iPod wasn't the first mp3 player; it was just the most beautiful one. Like "Steal Like An Artist" author Austin Kleon says, creative theft can be incredibly positive, so long as it's honoring instead of degrading, crediting rather than plagiarizing, and transforming instead of intimidating.

Emilia Clarke, George R.R. MartinIf you can't shake it, you have to do it.

When Martin was starting on "A Song Of Ice and Fire," he was still working in Hollywood. Between the screenplays and the writer's rooms, he just couldn't shake the need to write the book.

"I still pitched shows in Hollywood," he says, "but this 'Ice and Fire' thing wouldn't leave my head. I kept thinking about it and scenes for these characters. It was just never far from me. I realized I really want to tell that story."

You see the same pattern in entrepreneurs. Pencils of Promise founder Adam Braun knew he wanted to start an education nonprofit since he spent his early 20s backpacking around the world. Even though he was on the fast-track at elite consultancy Bain & Company, he left to launch an education nonprofit — one of the most innovative in the world.

It is about inspiration.

Sometimes, inspiration does come on its own. As Martin tells Rolling Stone, the opening scene of the book came to him in a vision:

It was the summer of 1991. I was still involved in Hollywood. My agent was trying to get me meetings to pitch my ideas, but I didn't have anything to do in May and June. It had been years since I wrote a novel. I had an idea for a science-fiction novel called Avalon. I started work on it and it was going pretty good, when suddenly it just came to me, this scene, from what would ultimately be the first chapter of A Game of Thrones. It's from Bran's viewpoint; they see a man beheaded and they find some direwolf pups in the snow. It just came to me so strongly and vividly that I knew I had to write it. I sat down to write, and in, like, three days it just came right out of me, almost in the form you've read.

The greatest leaders are visionary: Elon Musk imagined an infrastructure for electric cars, now he's building it (and civilian space travel, too). Richard Branson imagined an airline that took care of its customers and helped make it into reality. Lyft CEO Logan Green wanted to make a better form of public transit. The company is on its way.

It is also about friendships.

When Martin was making the "Song of Ice and Fire" universe real, he had a big question: How magical should this fantasy world be? Lots of spells or not too many? Then the big question: Should there be dragons?

As brilliant minds like Charles Darwin and Kanye West did, Martin decided to ask a friend.

"Should the Targaryens actually have dragons?" Martin recalls. "I was discussing this with a friend, writer Phyllis Eisenstein — I dedicated the third book to her — and she said, 'George, it's a fantasy — you've got to put in the dragons.' She convinced me, and it was the right decision. Now that I'm deep into it, I can't imagine the book without the dragons."

Who you know is more important than you might think

The One Thing That Scares Neil deGrasse Tyson About Being On TV

Neil deGrasse Tyson wife Alice YoungLong before Neil deGrasse Tyson hosted Fox's successful documentary series "Cosmos," he was more famous for his work in the science community as a leading astrophysicist, author, and educator.

But it wasn't easy for the 55-year-old to transition from teacher to TV star.

"It was hard because as an educator and as a scientist, I give lectures and there's up to 1,000 people in the room and I see what their reaction is at every moment. Are they asleep? Are they bored? Are they excited? On TV, there's no response, no information," deGrasse Tyson told Business Insider at Tuesday's Time 100 gala, which celebrated what the magazine considers the most influential people in the world.

The astrophysicist added: "I prefer a live audience. The TV scares me a little bit, because I don't know if I'm connecting. I have to rely on my life experience having connected, to know that this is working, even though I have no data on whether or not it actually is."

neil degrasse tyson planets cosmos fox

As for why deGrasse Tyson wanted to resurrect "Cosmos"  nearly 35 years after Carl Sagan hosted the original show — he said, "I thought 'Cosmos' needed to be done again and I thought I could do it and do it well. Forces came together with the original writers of the series and so the rest came together."

But first, the scientist needed TV training.

"I have no experience reading from a teleprompter — none!" he said. "So I needed some training to read from a prompter in a way that's just natural. I think I pretty much succeeded. I can talk about the universe like I can talk about my living room  couch is here, TV is there, solar system there  but TV was more of a challenge."

With a show on a major network came a new level of fame.

"I was pretty public before then so it's really just an increment," the married father of two said. "It went from, like, 50 people a day to 200 people a day who would stop me in the street. But once I passed 10 a day, I knew that my privacy was gone."

Not that he minds. "It comes with what I've been doing, so it just is," he said. "Now I have to just be a little more groomed when I leave in the morning. You can't scratch yourself or do things that you may otherwise want to do, but I've grown accustomed to it."

But deGrasse Tyson said that, luckily, his fans aren't like the paparazzi:

"It's not people who ask me my favorite color or anything. Instead, they say, 'Thanks for teaching me about black holes and the universe.' To an educator, that's a special comment."

Kristen Anderson-Lopez Robert Lopez Frozen songwriters

It was widely reported yesterday that Disney bans the word "God" from being used in its animated films and accompanying song lyrics.

The initial reports came from an NPR interview with Oscar-winning "Frozen" songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, but the married couple say their quotes about "religious things" being "one of the only places you have to draw the line at Disney" were completely misconstrued.

We spoke exclusively with the songwriters at Tuesday night's Time 100 gala, where the duo were honored as one of the magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World."

When asked about the ban, Kristen Anderson-Lopez clarified, "That is completely misconstrued. We were talking about one instance where we were using the word 'God' in vain."

Her husband Robert explained the specific instance in question was about "using the Lord's name in vain," with a song line that would have been: "Couldn't keep it in, God knows I tried."

Kristen elaborated, "That's what we were going to do and our collaborators felt that could be construed as using the Lord's name in vain, so we didn't put it in the movie."

"But Disney does not have a policy of not using the word 'God' at all," she assures.

In fact, the couple say there are no words or topics that are off limits at Disney. They just felt it was better to nix the one line.

Many had speculated that Disney was extra cautious with the songwriters because Robert was co-writer of the crass, religious satire Broadway hit, "Book of Mormon."

But Robert previously assured NPR, "I don't think Disney has any problem with employing people who have, you know, done off-color stuff in the past."

"Book of Mormon" co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone — who wrote the couple's Time profile— explained why their friends' song "Let It Go" was so influential this year: "It’s catchy and familiar and yet new. It’s that perfect mix where a songwriter can get a song you’ve never heard before stuck in your head in 30 seconds."

As for their spot on the elite Time magazine list, the couple says, "The fact that we're even on this list made us laugh really hard, we wrote songs for a Disney princess movie!"

"Frozen" has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and is the highest-grossing animated film of all time.

Why DreamWorks Animation Keeps Failing And How It Plans To Bounce Back

mr peabody and sherman

DreamWorks Animation announced Tuesday that it will take a writedown on its recent release, "Mr. Peabody & Sherman."

It’s the studio’s latest animated feature they’ve had to take a writedown on after underperformances on 2012's "Rise of the Guardians" and last summer's underwhelming "Turbo." That accounts for three of DWA's last 4 animated pictures.

"The Croods," which made $587 million last year, stands out as the company's only real successful original film since 2010's break-out hit "How to Train Your Dragon" and 2008's "Kung Fu Panda."

During the company's Q1 earnings call, CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg didn't shy away from addressing the studio's recent failures. He outright acknowledged them saying his number one priority is getting DWA's feature film business back on track.

Here's four ways DreamWorks Animation plans to turn it around.

1. Cut production costs on movies

dreamworks animation madagascar 3DreamWorks Animation’s last four titles have cost an estimated average of $140 million each.

Starting in November, Chief Operating Officer Ann Daly says the studio’s average movie will cost $125 million or less to produce. The first feature release under this new structure will be “Home,” a film about aliens invading Earth, that will feature the voice talents of Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”), Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez.

“Our objective is to ensure that our box-office successes will be more lucrative," says Daly. "And in the case where a film performs below expectations that it can still be profitable.”

2. More sequels and fewer movie releases

how to train your dragon 2Rather than rely on more risky original pictures, DWA will start rolling out more sequels to its most lucrative franchises. So expect to see more “Madagascar,” more dragons, and, yes, more “Shrek” spin-off movies.

The upcoming movie slate includes “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” How to Train Your Dragon 3,” “Penguins in Madagascar,” “Kung Fu Panda 3,” a sequel to 2013’s “The Croods” and another to Shrek character “Puss in Boots.”

Katzenberg said the studio needs to be “more flexible” with the number of movies it releases in a given year.

Daly says the studio plans to average one franchise film every year through 2018.

3. More efficient marketing

Katzenberg says he wants to be executing strong marketing for "event movies" as far as 18 months before their release in order to ensure their releases "standout to audiences as must-see theatrical experiences.”

4. Original movie ideas will go through the wringer to make sure they’re worth releasing

Katzenberg:

“Movies that are not sequels, we are – I think really triple or looking at those to make sure that they are big concepts and highly marketable concepts."

"So, even an original movie like 'Boo,' which is coming next summer is a ghost movie. It’s a flat-out comedy with Seth Rogen, Melissa McCarthy, Bill Murray, big visual fun kind of Ghostbusters ideas, it’s a little early, its more than 15 months out from release in it. But it feels like a very big idea. It feels like a very marketable idea, it’s got very strong elements to it.

"When we’re looking at original movies they actually need to check-off a lot more boxes than they’ve had to in the past.”

Here's Why '24' Is Returning As A 12-Part Miniseries

24 live another day poster

When "24" returns to Fox Monday, we'll see Kiefer Sutherland return as fan favorite Jack Bauer.

This time, he'll have 12 hours — instead of the usual 24 — to stop a terrorist threat in London in a new miniseries, "24: Live Another Day."

During a conference call with series executive producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto last week, Coto explained the decision for less episodes has a lot to do with the recent success of miniseries on other networks.

"The idea for this, to do a 12-hour season, I think has a lot to do with the success of 12-hour limited series," says Coto. "I think 'Under the Dome' was probably something that sparked the network and/or the studio's curiosity about doing something like this. And it makes it a special event; it makes it something to catch."

under the dome dean norris CBS"Under the Dome," based on the Stephen King novel, became CBS' largest summer premiere since the start of reality series "Big Brother" in 2000. Ratings throughout the season stayed steadily above 10 million per episode. Season 2 will premiere June 30.

Similarly, HBO had recent success with its 8-episode miniseries "True Detective" starring Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

Coto explained the 12-hour episode format will be similar to 2008's made-for-TV movie "24: Redemption" that took place in real time.

He says reducing the episode count helped in more ways than one.

"For us, as writers, it's been fun to condense the storytelling into this 12 hours," says Coto. "When we look down the runway of the season we don't have 24 hours to fill, whereas in the old series we might try to stretch things out because we knew we had so much time. Now, we're finding ourselves with the end in sight and really working to resolve all of our storylines."

The Abandoned Subway Station In 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Actually Exists

Warning: There are minor spoilers ahead.

If you see "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," there's a scene midway through the movie that shows Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) exploring an abandoned subway station in New York City that supposedly ran along the D line.

Peter Parker amazing spider man 2amazing spider man 2 subway station

Parker heads to the Roosevelt station to find out the truth about his deceased parents and stumbles upon a secret subway car that served as his father's secret lab.

amazing spider man 2 roosevelt stationamazing spider man 2 subway

If you're not familiar with New York City — and even if you are — you're probably wondering whether the Roosevelt station is real.

It is.

While there are plenty of abandoned subway stations in NYC, these are the two likeliest locations the film refers to.

1. The Roosevelt Ave. Station

In Queens, there's a Roosevelt Ave. station that was built for the Independent subway system. It consists of a trackless tunnel that was never finished after the Great Depression and World War II. Instead, it's used for storage.

From Columbia.edu:

The Queens Boulevard subway was part of the Independent Subway planned by the Board of Transportation in 1924. It opened in August 1933 as far as Roosevelt Ave, December 1936 to Union Turnpike, and April 1937 to 169 St in Jamaica. The subway has several provisions for extension to additional Independent Subway routes announced in 1929 and known as the Second System.

At Roosevelt Ave, an upper level terminal station was built for a Second System route and never used. The upper level station is on the same level as the mezzanine of the open station and is sited just east of it. The terminal had a center island platform with a trackway on each side.

NYCsubway.org has some photos you can view of the abandoned station. You can check them out here.

2. President Franklin D. Roosevelt's secret station

Underneath the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, there's a hidden station called Track 61.

It was built as a private railway that traveled to and from nearby Grand Central Station.

President FDR reportedly used the track for transport to hide the fact he had Polio while campaigning for his fourth term. The track is supposedly still in use as an escape train for presidents visiting NYC and was most recently used by President Bush.

At one point in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," Parker considers FDR has something to do with the hidden station, basically just because of the name Roosevelt.

Take a look at it:

The BBC did a special on Track 61 where they headed to Grand Central station to check out the hidden platform.

They traveled down a secret historic passage that Grand Central won't admit exists.

According to Grand Central Station's Dan Brooker, the platform had one customer, President Roosevelt.

Brooker says his private train held a special train car that held his limo.

Leslie Jones SNL"Saturday Night Live" writer/actress Leslie Jones is facing backlash after joking on "Weekend Update" that she would have been the “number one slave draft pick” due to her stature.

Jones, appearing as SNL's "in-house image expert," weighed in on actress Lupita Nyong'o being named the Most Beautiful in the World by People magazine.

"I agree that she is beautiful," Jones told co-host Colin Jost, "but I'm waiting for them to put out the 'Most Useful' list."

"Look at me, I’m single right now, but back in the slave days, I would have never been single," Jones explained. "I’m six feet tall and I’m strong, Colin. Strong! I mean, look at me, I’m a mandingo ... I don't want to be a slave I'm just saying I’m just saying that back in the slave days, my love life would have been way better. Massah would have hooked me up with the best brotha on the plantation … I would be the No. 1 slave draft pick."

The backlash was immediate, with many black commentators slamming the writer-performer.

Writer and Social Strategist, Mary Pryor, tweeted to her over 21,000 followers following the sketch:

  • "Since everyone was busy watching the fight pls watch and explain to me how these slave jokes were funny"
  • "This is a problem. Pls watch this slave joke segment from  & discuss"
  • "Slavery/Forced Mating/Monkey jokes aren't funny let   know don't give this a green light"
  • "This is extremely problematic especially since wrote the jokes and writes for the show"

Ebony.com senior editor Jamilah Lemieux tweeted to her over 25,000 followers:

  • "This Leslie Jones person is an embarrassment . I'm so appalled right now."
  • "So the Lupita moment had to be counteracted by a Black woman acting like a big loud monkey? Just...wow. "
  • "If comedy is fair game and you can say whatever you want, then comedians shouldn't get upset when audiences reply however they see fit."

After #LeslieJones quickly became a trending topic on Twitter, the comedian went on a Twitter rant of her own, heatedly trying to defend the sketch.

"Very sad I have to defend myself to black people," she tweeted to her over 4,000 followers. "I'm a comic it is my job to take things and make them funny to make you think. Especially the painful things. This joke was written from the pain that one night I realized that black men don't really fuck with me and why am I single."

Jones continued, "I'm betting if Chris Rock or Dave Chappelle did that joke or or jay z or Kanye put in a rap they would be called brilliant. Cause they all do this type of material."

Jones' 15 tweets are combined below:

Ok I wasn't gonna say any thing because I know that dumb people know how to use the computer too, but now this is so ridiculous. Where is the rape idiots. I said nothing about rape you f------ morons. I was talking about being match to another strong brother. Not being rape by white man. What part of this joke that wasn't true? I would have been used for breeding straight up. That's my reality.

And it saddens me that BLACK PEOPLE bitch and moan about the most stupid s---. I'm a comic it is my job to take things and make them funny to make you think. Especially the painful things. Why are y'all so mad. This joke was written from the pain that one night I realized that black men don't really f--- with me and why am I single. And that in slave days I would have always had a man cause of breeding.

If anybody If anybody should be offended is white folks cause it's what they did. Y'all so busy trying to be self righteous you miss what the joke really is. Very sad I have to defend myself to black people. Now I'm betting if Chris Rock or Dave Chappelje did that joke or or jay z or Kanye put in a rap they would be called brilliant. Cause they all do this type of material. Just cause it came from a strong black woman who ain't afraid to be real y'all mad.

So here is my announcement black folks, you won't stop me and Im gonna go even harder and deeper now. Cause it's a shame that we kill each other instead of support each other. This exactly why black people are where we are now cause we too fucking sensitive and instead of make lemonade out of lemons we just suck the sour juice from the lemons. Wake up. I wouldn't be able to do a joke like that if I didn't know my history or proud of where I came from and who I am.

My dad is the biggest militant in the world and he would have loved that joke. My grandmother went to jail for whooping two white men asses for attacking her she also was 6'2 and strong. And she laughed her ass off. Get over yourself and you might as well get use to it cause I'm good at what I doand I ain't going NOWHERE!!!

A few hours later, Jones tweeted:

Watch the skecth in question below and judge for yourselves.

This Gorgeous Remake Of The Classic Nintendo System Is Like Nothing You've Ever Seen Before

Analogue Nt

The nostalgia of a classic Nintendo Entertainment system is like nothing else.

I remember when I first got a Nintendo. I didn't get the bundle with the gun, so no "Duck Hunt" for me, but that didn't stop me from playing "Super Mario Bros." for hours with my friends. Then I'd go to their houses and play for hours more. It was the first real game system I had (before that I had a Commodore VIC-20 — don't mind me as I date myself) in a long line of game systems that followed.

I think back on those games and that system fondly, but I never considered buying one today, or even one of the mods people have made, such as this one, called the Hyperkin Retro 5

Usually it's because the graphics on these systems is pretty weak compared with what we're used to from systems like the Xbox 360, and especially newer systems like the PS4 and Xbox One.

Until now, that is.

Analogue NtThe Analogue Nt, a redesigned NES made out of a solid block of aluminum, is not only beautiful, but it's functional, as well. You can play both Nintendo and Famicom games on it, and for $49 extra, you can get an HDMI adapter, allowing you to play the games in full 1080p resolution.

"[The games] look amazing," Analogue Interactive owner Christopher Taber tells Business Insider. "It's all about starting with the highest quality analog signals and using a proper upscaler. Which is exactly what we developed."

The original Nintendo system only offered composite video output, which is a poor video signal. The Nt, on the other hand, outputs RGB, Component, S-Video and composite.

"This means razor sharp pixels and outstanding quality," Taber says. "The adapter even has a switchable scanline generator to give you that retro CRT feel on your HDTV."

Crafting the Nt out of a single block of aluminum is a bold move and helps make it stand out, which is the point, Taber says. "We approached the design and production from the same philosophy of designing a piece of hi-fi equipment," he says. "I try to embrace the philosophy 'buy less, but more quality.'"

It will also come in several colors; accessories cost extra.

Analogue is known for its high-quality, beautifully designed pieces. The company built a Neo Geo system from 100% walnut

Analogue NtThe Nt uses original Nintendo components, but you won't be stuck blowing into those cartridges anymore. "The Nt solves all of these problems and goes radically above and beyond the original's capabilities, in regards to video and audio outputs, and compatibility," Taber says. "All the while remaining true to the original hardware, with no emulation."

At $500, it's curious who will actually buy the Nt, when an Xbox One costs around the same price and can do a whole lot more than play games. But Taber doesn't seem too worried. He says that the fact that it can only do one thing — play games — makes it more enticing than any of the other current-generation game systems.

"I think anybody who is interested in the Nt will want it regardless if they own an Xbox One or PS4. It stands on its own legs in its own category," he says.

Not to mention that the legality of the system is also questionable. We've reached out to Nintendo about whether they will try to block the sale of the Nt, and will update this story if we hear back.

The system doesn't include any games, but Taber confirms that they're working on bundled packages with some "newly developed" NES and Famicom titles.

You can preorder the system starting today on Analogue's website. It will start shipping this summer.

It's the show's first time back on the air since the 8-season series came to an end in 2010.

If you’re excited about Bauer's return, here’s everything you need to know about “24: Live Another Day.”

The miniseries will follow Bauer as a fugitive on the run in England attempting to thwart a terrorist plot.

Heller is flanked by his Chief of Staff MARK BOUDREAU (Tate Donovan, “Damages”), who is married to Heller’s daughter – Jack’s former flame, AUDREY (Kim Raver, “Revolution”). Meanwhile, a hardened CHLOE O’BRIAN (Mary Lynn Rajskub, “Firewall”), Bauer’s CTU confidante, is now working underground with high-profile hacker ADRIAN CROSS (Michael Wincott, “The Crow”). Guest stars on 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY include Golden Globe Award winner Judy Davis (“Life with Judy Garland”) and Golden Globe Award nominee Stephen Fry (“Alice in Wonderland,” BONES). The harrowing day will have Jack attempting to thwart an unthinkable terrorist attack that could change the world forever.”

Will it have the same feel as the original series?

It should. The original "24" team consisting of executive producer Howard Gordon, co-creator Robert Cochran, director Jon Cassar, and producers Evan Katz, Manny Coto, David Fury, and Brian Grazer are reuniting to work on "Live Another Day." The series will also utilize the familiar split-screen format.

Why will the series have a 12-episode arc instead of 24?24 live another day jack bauerExecutive producer Manny Coto recently explained during a conference call the reasoning has a lot to do with the recent success of other limited series.

"I think 'Under the Dome' was probably something that sparked the network and/or the studio's curiosity about doing something like this," said Coto. "And it makes it a special event; it makes it something to catch."

What will the show's format be like?

Coto says the series will follow a similar format to 2008's made-for-TV movie "24: Redemption" which followed Bauer in real rime for two hours.

"All you're doing is presenting 12 hours out of a 24-hour period, but the episodes themselves are real time as 'Redemption' was and as the original series was," says Coto.

When will it air on Fox?

“Live Another Day” will premiere Monday, May 5 at 8 p.m. with a two-hour special premiere.

After this week, the show will air every Monday at 9 p.m.

Ben Affleck Had A History Of Winning Big At The Hard Rock Casino Before Being Banned

Ben Affleck poker casino

Ben Affleck was banned for life from the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas last week after security caught the actor allegedly counting cards while playing blackjack at a high rollers' table.

Card counting  a method of using probability to predict the next hand  is not technically illegal, but it can get a player barred.

But Affleck being "too good at the game," as casino security told him in this instance, isn't anything new.

Before starring in last year's crime thriller "Runner Runner" about an online gambling tycoon, Affleck made many visits to Vegas — often winning large sums.

According to the NY Post, he "had hit it big playing '21' at the very same casino, raking in a total of nearly $1 million in two trips."

The Post reported at the time that Affleck won $140,000 in a single sitting while playing with pal Matt Damon and "gave away every one of his $140,000 in chips to casino staffers on the 2000 trip — tipping his dealers, waitress and door boys as much as $5,000."

A year later, Affleck reportedly "won $800,000 while playing three simultaneous hands at $20,000 a pop."

Affleck also has a proclivity for Poker, in the past hosting games at a Beverly Hills cigar bar with A-list players like Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tobey Maguire.

In 2004, Affleck — who is worth a reported $75 million — even won the California State Poker Championship and its $350,000 grand prize. It earned him a seat in the World Poker Tour final tournament, but he didn't take home any prize money.

"This is not likely the last time you'll see Ben Affleck at one of our final tables," a Commerce Casino State Poker Championship spokeswoman said at the time. "He has become a respected member of the poker elite and continues to work to improve his game."

The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas has not yet responded to our request for comment.

This Graph Shows Which Rappers Have A Greater Vocabulary Than Shakespeare

William Shakespeare is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language.

But a new graph by data scientist Matt Daniels shows that some of today's most popular hip-hop artists can go word for word with the playwright and poet.

On his website, Daniels points out how Shakespeare used 28,829 words throughout his canon, which suggests "he knew over 100,000 words and arguably had the largest vocabulary, ever."

Daniels graphed the vocabularies of artists like Kanye West, Drake, and LL Cool J to see where they ranked in relation to Shakespeare. To keep the graph fair to both new and old artists, Daniels used only the first 35,000 lyrics of the artists.

He used only the first 5,000 words for seven of Shakespeare's works — including "Hamlet," "Romeo and Juliet," and "Othello" — and included "Moby Dick" for reference (he used the first 35,000 words of the novel).Rapping vocab

Here are some takeaways from the graph:

  • Obscure artist Aesop Rock came in at No. 1 with 2,000 more words than Shakespeare.
  • Jay Z, Puff Daddy, and Ludacris all fall somewhere in the middle of the graph with a vocabulary of 4,300 to 5,000 words.
  • Some artists, like The Notorious B.I.G., didn't have enough material to be included on the list.
  • The members of the Wu-Tang Clan take up six spots on the list with GZA coming in at No. 2.
  • DMX came in last, at No. 85, with just 3,214 words used.

Prince William has shown that he's pretty down to earth — he was seen flying coach on an American Airlines flight from Memphis to Dallas on Sunday.

The prince was in Memphis for best buddy Guy Pelly's wedding to Holiday Inn heiress Lizzie Wilson.

Local Memphis news reporter Eli Ross was the first to spot the prince on the initial leg of his trip back to London.

Ross initially tweeted a picture of William, surrounded by security, about to board the aircraft:

Then a closer look:

And Prince William seated in coach!

Let's take a closer look. Note that William is six-three and could have used the extra legroom in first class:

America Airlines later responded to Ross' tweet:

Some on Twitter speculated why the prince would fly coach:Eli prince william tweet

The reporter tracked the prince even after their flight had landed:

Prince Harry was slightly less low-key, flying to Memphis for the wedding on a private jet from Miami, where he had been celebrating Pelly's bachelor party

William stopped in Chicago on his way to England.

The Real Story Behind A Major Scene In Last Night’s 'Louie' Premiere

Louie GIF

Louis C.K.'s FX comedy "Louie" debuted its season 4 last night with a bang.

In one scene, C.K.'s character goes home with a wealthy model, played by Yvonne Strahovski, after performing at a charity event. It all goes horribly awry when she tries to tickle him and he reflexively punches her in the eye.

In real life, the story kind of happened to the actual Louis C.K.

The comedian explained to Vulture:

"The only truth in that is when I was younger living in New York. When you're single in New York, you get into all kinds of weird situations. And I once did a really fancy benefit on the Upper East Side, not in the Hamptons ... I wasn’t dressed properly and I did poorly. And there was a young, very rich woman who just found me amusing and took me home to her apartment in the Upper East Side. And there were pictures. Her dad was an astronaut. That part is true ... And so she kind of had her way with me. I was in my 20s. Like, now that would never happen, but in your 20s, it'll happen now and again. And then she just [said], 'Let yourself out.' That was all I ever saw of her ... But I do get very upset when people tickle me."

As for what Strahovski thought of her "Louie" role, she tells Vulture: "It was slightly terrifying because … it’s a little weird. And I haven’t seen the episode so I can’t speak to how it turned out, but because it was terrifying it was something I had to do."

Check out promos for the episode that aired Monday:

There Are A Ridiculous Amount Of Similarities Between ‘Frozen’ And ‘The Lion King’

“Frozen” is now the highest-grossing animated movie ever.

The Disney picture has made more than $1.1 billion worldwide. If you’ve seen the movie, you may have thought it felt a bit like another huge Disney hit, 1994’s “The Lion King.”

Tumblr user marauders4ever pointed out a number of similarities between the two box-office hits which has since gone viral.

Here are a few:

Both open with catchy, alluring tunes in different languages. The start of "Frozen" immediately makes you recall another time Disney opened with a huge number.

Both films have royal families ...frozen lion king families

... and experience a tragic death.Frozen boat scene

... without realizing their home is in peril.

While both films do share a few things in common, they're far from the same story.

Here's what the movies are actually based off of:

"The Lion King"

the lion king scar simbaOn the two-disc platinum edition of "The Lion King" the filmmakers have said the movie has been inspired by both "Hamlet" and the stories of Joseph and Moses from the bible.

The Shakespearean play is the most obvious source of inspiration as it shows Claudius kill his brother King Hamlet. Similarly, the prince, also named Hamlet, is told by the ghost of his father to avenge his death after being sent away. (In “The Lion King” Simba’s father Mufasa tells him to take back his rightful place as King.)

Many have also compared "The Lion King" to Japanese series “Kimba the White Lion” from the ‘60s. Disney has cited similarities are coincidental

"Frozen"

frozen poster"Frozen" is loosely based off of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen."

Disney has been trying to adapt the story for years, putting the project on hold numerous times. "The Snow Queen" centers around two children — a boy and a girl, Kai and Gerda. One day the boy’s demeanor changes after splinters from a magical troll mirror gets lodged in both his heart and his eye. Kai is kidnapped and stowed away by the evil Snow Queen until rescued by Gerda.

A few of the main character's names also appear to be nods to "The Snow Queen" creator.

Hans is the name of film's antagonist while Kristoff (Christian), Anna, and Sven (Andersen) are among the movie's protagonists.

The Weird Connection Between 'The Simpsons' And The Syrian Rebels

$

Screen Shot 2014 05 06 at 2.12.24 PM

According to an Egyptian TV network al-Tahrir, evidence contained in an old episode of "The Simpsons" suggests the U.S. may have been behind a conspiracy to destabilize the Arab world, in particular Syria, which remains at war with rebel groups.

In the episode, entitled "New Kids on the Blecch," Bart, Milhouse, Nelson and Ralph, are tapped for a boy band, The Party Posse, whose first single, "Drop Da Bomb," turns out to be a subliminal recruitment campaign for the U.S. Navy. In the song's music video, the boys pilot war planes, parachuting into an unnamed Arab nation to teach the local women to wear bikinis and play tether ball.

And if you look closely, a jeep in the video clearly displays the flag now used by the Syrian opposition.

The video, the anchor says, "suggests that what is happening in Syria today was premeditated," noting that theories have been proliferating on local social networks.

"This was from 2001," the anchor adds conspiratorially, "before there was such a thing as the Syrian opposition."

Interestingly, while the flag does in fact resemble that of Syrian rebel groups, The Times of Israel points out that the same flag was used prior to 1963, when the Ba'ath party took over.

Then again, the rebels might just be "Simpsons" fans.

This wasn't the first time this episode caused controversy. After the 9/11 attacks, "Simpsons" aficionados may recall, some violent scenes were deleted from future airings because they were deemed potentially upsetting to viewers.

The Egyptian news segment was translated by MEMRI, the Middle East Media Research Institute, a group that highlights programming from the Arabic world and has been accused of highlighting the most negative clips from a Western perspective. This example would surely qualify, and it has been duly picked up by right-leaning news organizations

It's worth noting, however, that American conspiricy theorists have their own pet "Simpsons" episodes. 1997's "The City of New York Vs. Homer Simpson" is said to have predicted 9/11 itself, as well as a would-be false flag attack in 2010. The latter tragedy never happened, perhaps because canny viewers exposed the plot.

The takeaway? It's about time intelligence agencies got wise and stopped planting clues in popular television programs. We're watching...
