Prison Is Starting To Feel Like Home In 'Orange Is The New Black' Season 2 Trailer

0
0

The new trailer for the upcoming second season of popular Netflix show "Orange Is The New Black" just arrived — and it shows little of prisoner protagonist, Piper Chapman.

Instead, the trailer focuses on the many different storylines of Piper's fellow inmates, including some newbies who are realizing prison is not what they thought it was going to be, and some old enemies returning to life behind bars.

As for Piper, she may be getting a little bit too used to her confined cell and orange jumpsuit.

"Orange Is The New Black" returns June 6th on Netflix.

'The Following' Actor Has To Film Every Scene Twice To Play Twins

kevin bacon the following

One of Fox's most-watched shows right now is "The Following."

The series follows FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) as he tries to track down cult leader Joe Carroll (James Purefoy).

Now in season 2, perhaps the biggest additions to the show have been murdering twins Luke and Mark who are both played by actor Sam Underwood.

the following sam underwood twins mark luke

To make you believe you're actually seeing double on screen, the show has to film each scene with the actor twice.

Director and executive producer Marcos Seiga tells Business Insider it's been incredibly challenging, but a lot of fun to figure out this season. When he returned to the director's chair for the season 2 premiere he researched every movie with twins for inspiration.

"I looked at 'Adaptation,' 'The Social Network,'" says Siega. "They clearly used one actor for the twins and I watched those scenes carefully. 'How do they do this? How do they make it feel real?'"

Seiga was familiar with the process having done it before over on the CW's "The Vampire Diaries" where actress Nina Dobrev plays two characters — Elena and Katherine

"On that show there was a very simple format where we did a lot of simple split screens and it worked really well and it was effective with that style of show," Siega tells us.

The easiest way to film a split screen is by shooting a scene twice with the same actor. They’ll first appear on either the left or right side of a screen before filming the next scene on the side opposite. Special effects can then make those two separate sequences appear seamless.

Making Underwood's two characters come to life would be a bit more of a challenge. Often, the two are seen interacting on screen together in the same scenes.

the following mark luke sam underwood

"'The Following' is handheld and it's visceral and it has a little more of a frenetic shooting style," says Siega. "That goes against the controlled environment that you need when you're doing these special effects. So we tried to trick the audience with a double who's an actor who is physically a double for Sam Underwood."

To make it look like Underwood appears on screen as both Luke and Mark, Siega explained how they shoot each scene with the actor and his stunt double, Shan Agish.

"You shoot it where the double does Mark and Sam does Luke and you shoot all your coverage as if you're just shooting two people, as if we were just shooting real twins. We always try not to see Shan's face when we shoot those scenes.

And then when you turn around and we switch Sam over to Mark you do that sort of complementary thing on the other side and you're able to maintain that handheld feel. It just means that we have to shoot everything twice."

Siega adds it's not that easy sometimes. Other elements can factor in to the length it takes to shoot scenes with Underwood.

"We sometimes have to change Sam and Shan over from Mark to Luke multiple times in an episode and depending on the coverage, the environment we're in, or the weather outside ... it's a big challenge," he says.

In one of the most recent episodes, you actually see the twins come face to face and embrace in a reunion scene.luke marc the following

They touch each other's faces and it looks like they're both side by side.

"What you're looking at there is a classic split screen," says Siega. "Liz Friedlander, who directed that episode, was very specific in the emotional moment of them touching each other."

After filming, they give the visual effects company a break down of what they want done.

"You have to say: This is what we're going to do and here are the pieces we need to make this work," says Siega. "That takes time and that is the hardest part of doing something like that."

"For all the camera trickery and the effects that you put into it, if you can retain the performance and the heart of the scene and the emotion that's really what the audience gets invested in and the scene was about two brothers seeing each other after they thought they may never see each other again and how they wanted to embrace," he adds.

And Siega says Underwood's performance is what really makes the twins believable. Most of the time on set, the actor will have to switch between the two roles instantaneously.

sam underwood the following

"Because of our schedule, you push him really hard and he doesn't have a whole lot of time," says Siega. "You can't say 'I need a second to adjust.' It's like: 'GO! Just be the other guy.'"

"It's a collaboration and it has its challenges, but the most important part of making it work honestly is Sam." Siega adds. "The fact that you can watch those scenes and you really believe you're looking at two distinct characters is a testament to his ability."

The Secret Deal That Led To An ‘X-Men’ Teaser At The End Of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

0

spider man jennifer lawrence x men

When you head out to see “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” in theaters this May, stay after the movie for an end-credits scene.

No, we’re not getting a tease of Spidey, Venom, or any of the web slinger’s Sinister Six crew.

Instead, fans will see a montage for “X-Men: Days of Future Past” featuring Jennifer Lawrence’s character Mystique.

This is confusing for fans who know that Sony Pictures distributes the Spider-Man films while Fox handles the X-Men franchise.

What’s going on? Are Spider-Man and the X-Men teaming up in a future movie to take down Disney’s Marvel titan at theaters?

Not yet, comic fans.

Variety reports the reason you’ll see the X-Men teased at the end of the film has to do with a deal between Sony and Fox because of “Amazing Spider-Man” director Marc Webb.

From Variety:

“Webb had an existing contract with Fox Searchlight to helm another film following 2009′s “500 (Days) of Summer.” After “The Amazing Spider-Man” in 2012, Webb’s negotiations briefly stalled with Sony as he was caught in a tug-of-war with Fox. Eventually, Fox agreed to allow Webb to direct Sony’s “Spider-Man” sequel, but only if Sony would promote its “X-Men” film for free.”

Yes, Sony agreed to run a promo for "Days of Future Past" after "Spider-Man."

The payoff is worth it for Sony. Since the sequel's debut overseas, it's already caused a lot of chatter online and end-credits scenes following Disney’s Marvel movies have helped draw interest and connect its wider Marvel universe.

The only problem is that viewers may be confused into believing there’s an X-Men / Spider-Man crossover in the works.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” will be released May 2.

Johnny Depp's New Movie 'Transcendence' Says Technology Will Turn Us Into X-Men

0
0

johnny depp transcendenceWarning: There are spoilers ahead.

After watching a screening of Johnny Depp's new movie, "Transcendence" Wednesday evening, I was left with a ton of questions.

The movie follows Dr. Will Caster (Depp), an Artificial Intelligence scientist, who has created an omniscient machine that appears to have the ability to feel. When Caster is poisoned by anti-technology terrorists, his mind is uploaded into his AI super computer, and, ultimately, the Internet to keep him alive.

Yes, it's a stretch.

Plotwise, the movie has a lot of holes and problems that I won't bother getting into because it gets rather confusing. (The film is currently sitting at a sour 13% on Rotten Tomatoes.)

The big takeaway from the film is to address the possible dangers of not only artificial intelligence but our technology-driven society as a whole.

However, there was one brief topic that stuck out to me that audiences will probably have questions about.

transcendence morgan freemanAt one point in the film, Caster's AI program heals a man who has been brutally injured.

The next time we see the character on screen, he exhibits super strength — he's able to lift objects that no possible human could with their bare hands.

He's not the only one. As the movie progresses, more individuals are seen with impossible strength as a result of Caster enhancing particular genes in addition to healing individuals. Soon these new enhanced humans start to be called hybrids.

With the influx of superhero movies this summer it instantaneously brought to mind images of Marvel's X-Men — comic book characters who all have an extra gene that "normal humans" don't possess.

Instead of "hybrids" though, Marvel refers to them as mutants.

the wolverine hugh jackman

We're not sure whether "Transcendence" first-time director Wally Pfister and Jack had Marvel's comic characters in mind or just enhancements to human genes. Either way, it's difficult to imagine that people who head to theaters won't see that scene and think of characters like Marvel's Wolverine or Hulk who have superhuman strength or Captain America, whose enhanced abilities were received from a gene-altering serum.

Will people eventually have the ability to receive genetic enhancements?

Technically, we already do if you consider gene therapy and human growth hormones.

As well, mice with expanded muscles coined "Schwarzenegger mice" have been bred in labs 10 years ago.

That doesn't mean we'll have mutant/hybrid humans walking around any time soon.

The National Human Genome Research Institute says genetic enhancement's ability to affect human evolution is unlikely.

"As the evolution of the human species is a nonrandom change in allelic frequencies resulting from selective pressure. The change progresses over generations because individuals with specific patterns of alleles are favored reproductively. If new alleles were introduced by gene transfer, the impact on the species would be negligible. Moreover, there is no certainty that genetically enhanced individuals would have greater biological fitness, as measured by reproductive success."

Singer Lawsuit Is Tied To Marc Collins-Rector, Infamous Child Abuser Of The Dot-Com Boom

0
0

Bryan Singer

For people who lived the through the dot-com collapse of the late 1990s, the name Marc Collins-Rector carries a special horror. Not only was he the architect of one of the most famous implosions of the time — the bankruptcy of Digital Entertainment Networks, an early provider of online video — but he is also a convicted child molester, according to federal records.

In fact, after DEN went belly-up (with the loss of 300 jobs following a botched $75 million IPO), Collins-Rector fled the U.S. and briefly spent time in a Spanish prison before being convicted in federal court of sex crimes. He pleaded guilty and paid a fine.

His name has resurfaced in the lawsuit filed against X-Men director Bryan Singer. The plaintiff, Michael Egan, claims he was 17 years old back in 1998 when he was introduced to Singer at Collins-Rector's mansion in California, according to The Wrap, where you can download a copy of the lawsuit.

On the grounds of the mansion, Egan was raped and sexually harassed and threatened with a gun by Collins-Rector, the founder of DEN, if he didn't comply, the lawsuit alleges. An attorney for Singer told The Wrap that the lawsuit was “completely without merit”:

“We are very confident that Bryan will be vindicated in this absurd and defamatory lawsuit ... It is obvious that this case was filed in an attempt to get publicity at the time when Bryan’s new movie is about to open in a few weeks."

Collins-Rector is not named as a defendant in the suit, but his alleged actions are described within it — suggesting that the plaintiff is in part hoping to lean on Collins-Rector's notoriety to leverage the claim against Singer.

A call to Collins-Rector's former attorney requesting comment revealed that the phone had been disconnected. Collins-Rector's last-known country of residence was the Dominican Republic, address unknown. The allegations in the suit refer to events that happened years ago, and Collins-Rector has long-since served the requirements of his conviction.

Marc Rector-CollinsBut it is the lawsuit's description of the interior of Collins-Rector's mansion that will fascinate people who heard the rumors about DEN back in the day. It was a poorly kept secret at the time that Collins-Rector and his friends held parties at their "M&C Estate" that would make Hugh Hefner blush.

This old story from the L.A. Times contains much of the backdrop to the Singer lawsuit and Rector-Collins' alleged role within it:

His two DEN co-founders were Chad Shackley, then 24, who had lived with Collins-Rector since dropping out of a Michigan high school, and Brock Pierce, then a 17-year-old actor best known for his leading roles in such Disney films as "The Mighty Ducks" and "First Kid."

All three lived in a 12,616-square-foot mansion in Encino, drove a Ferrari and a Lamborghini, wore Armani suits, took spur-of-the-moment vacations to the tropics and threw parties that attracted a young, hip crowd that also defined DEN's target audience.

... Work began in 1998 on its first show, "Chad's World." Produced by the teenage Pierce, the show centered on a 15-year-old from Michigan who questions his sexual orientation and ultimately flees his town's intolerance to move in with a gay couple in a California mansion.

For early financing, majority owner and chairman Collins-Rector turned to high-profile individuals he had come to know in Hollywood, including television actor Fred Savage. Former U.S. Rep. Michael Huffington said he invested $5 million.

Huffington later complained that he was led to believe major companies were investing at the same time he was, and on the same terms--which wasn't true. He also said Collins-Rector traded on his name, describing Huffington as vice chairman although he held no such position.

Collins-Rector initially made his fortune in the tech business as the founder of an early ISP, Concentric Networks. It was acquired by Nextlink Communications for $2.9 billion. Again, the Times picks up the story:

The windfall enabled Collins-Rector and Shackley to pursue a lavish new lifestyle. They bought an enormous RV and traveled the country scouting living locations, settling briefly in Beverly Hills before paying $2.47 million in 1997 for a mansion in Encino.

At one point, Collins-Rector was accused of meeting a 13-year-old boy online. He was sued in a lawsuit in New Jersey federal court, and the case was settled, the LA Times says. Later, federal prosecutors began looking into allegations that Collins-Rector had abused children. VNUNet reported at the time that Collins-Rector was found in Spain:

[He was] arrested in June on an international warrant after being indicted in New Jersey on five counts of transporting a minor across state lines for the purpose of engaging in sexual acts.

Brock Pierce has never been charged for a crime nor has a warrant ever been issued for him, his representative told Business Insider.*

Today, Collins-Rector remains a registered sex offender but he is not in prison, according to U.S. Bureau of Prisons records. Fast Company did a nice, long story on Collins-Rector several years ago that is well worth a read.

*Correction: Business Insider would like to make it clear that Pierce was not accused of the crimes charged against Collins-Rector.

White House Refuses To Comment On Petition To Deport Justin Bieber

Troubled pop star Justin Bieber has had high-profile run-ins with the law recently but the White House doesn't appear set to add to his growing catalogue of woes.

Just under 275,000 people have added their names to a petition on the White House website calling for the Canadian's deportation from the US, easily surpassing the threshold of 100,000 signatures required for presidential consideration.

But the White House said Friday it would not comment, citing terms in its "We the People" program that allows it to decline certain petitions.

Instead, it sought to use the attention given to the petition to argue that an overhaul of the immigration system would spur the US economy and shrink Washington's ballooning deficit by nearly $1 trillion during the next 20 years.

"For those of you counting at home, that's 12.5 billion concert tickets -- or 100 billion copies of Mr Bieber's debut album," the White House said.

"You better believe it," it added, an apparent reference to the "Belieber" term used to describe Bieber's legions of adoring, mostly pre-teen female fans.

The petition was created by a "J.A." in Detroit on January 23, the day Bieber was busted in Miami Beach for alleged impaired driving and illegal drag racing in a flashy Italian sports car.

"We the people of the United States feel that we are being wrongly represented in the world of pop culture," it says.

"We would like to see the dangerous, reckless, destructive and drug-abusing Justin Bieber deported and his green card revoked.

"He is not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible influence on our nation's youth. We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society."

Bieber, 20, is understood to be living and working in the United States under a renewable O-1 visa for entertainers, rather than a green card for permanent resident status.

It remains unclear whether Bieber's visa would be affected by his arrest.

Bieber also faces an assault charge in Canada for allegedly striking a limousine driver on the back of the head.

'Transcendence' Is Johnny Depp's Fourth Box-Office Bomb In A Row

0
0

johnny depp transcendence speaking

No amount of star power helped out Johnny Depp’s new movie “Transcendence” at the box office this weekend.

The sci-fi flick, about a scientist whose mind gets uploaded into an artificial intelligence as his life hangs in the balance, made just $11.2 million opening weekend.

It cost an estimated $100 million to make.

Analysts had the Warner Bros. film making closer to $20 million — still a weak number for a big-budget film.

Worldwide, the film has made $28.6 million.

This is Depp’s fourth consecutive movie to tank opening weekend after “The Lone Ranger,” “Dark Shadows,” and “The Rum Diary.”

The problem isn’t Depp’s appeal just so much as the films themselves.

Each one has been poorly reviewed — not because of Depp — but because of either the film’s script or its overall lackof focus.

If this was another “Pirates of the Caribbean” feature, it would have fared fine. Those films have worldwide appeal. The last one made more than $1 billion at theaters.

Like his previous few films, "Transcendence" was slammed with poor reviews prior to release and is currently sitting at 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.

One of the film’s problems was that it came from first-time director Wally Pfister— Christopher Nolan’s cinematographer in films including “The Dark Knight” trilogy and “Inception.” Though "Transcendence" is a visual marvel, the plot gets muddled with one too many open-ended questions about clones, cell regeneration, artificial intelligence, and anti-technology terrorists.

If it focused on one or two ideas instead of trying to explore so many, it may have played out better.

The other main problem with “Transcendence” is its waste of huge talent.

From the way the film was marketed, audiences were under the impression stars Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy (from other Christopher Nolan films) would have large roles.morgan freeman cillian murphy transcendenceHowever, that wasn’t the case. Freeman and Murphy’s roles felt more like glorified extended cameos who showed up here and there to offer a line here or there.

Not even Depp, whose face covered ads for the film, was the real star of the film.transcendence posterInstead Rebecca Hall, who you may recognize from a recent role in “Iron Man 3,” was the real focus of the film as Depp’s scientist wife. Though a fine actress, she’s not as recognizable as the other talent and makes the big-budget film a tough sell to audiences who may not remember her from 2006’s “The Prestige” or 2010’s “The Town.”

transcendence johnny deppAt the end of the day, no matter how great an actor Depp may be, and how visually stunning the film, if the script and story don’t work then the film’s not going to do well.

That’s what happened here.

Low-Budget Religious Movie ‘Heaven Is For Real’ Crushed It At The Box Office

heaven is for real

While Johnny Depp's latest movie "Transcendence" bombed this weekend, faith-based film “Heaven is for Real” soared, scoring $21.5 million upon opening.

Based on the best-selling book of the same name by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent, the film follows the son of a pastor who claims to have been to heaven and back during surgery.

The Tri-Star movie, which cost an estimated $12 million, came in third at the box office this weekend, narrowly losing out to "Captain America 2" ($26.6 million) and "Rio 2" ($22.5 million). The religious picture undoubtedly had a nice bump debuting over Easter weekend.

It’s the latest in a series of bible-based movies to perform exceedingly well at theaters since the end of February.

Model Says Celebrity Photographer Offered Her A Vogue Shoot In Exchange For Sex

Terry Richardson

Photographer Terry Richardson is no new face to sexual scandal, but recent allegations that he messaged model Emma J. Appleton to ask for sex in exchange for a Vogue shoot have brought him back into the spotlight.

On Sunday, Emma J. Appleton tweeted this message the fashion photographer allegedly sent her:

TR Text

A spokeswoman from the Richardson camp immediately waved away Appleton's allegations as fake, BuzzFeed reports.

“This is obviously a fake. Terry did not send this text,” spokesperson Candice Marks said.

Appleton's claims echo previous allegations that Richardson used his status and power to manipulate young women who want to "make it" in the fashion industry.

As one model once told The Gloss, "he was the only photographer to leave me feeling like I needed to take two showers."

After being accused of sexual harassment by several models, Richardson published an essay in the Huffington Post called “Correcting the Rumors,” where he stood by his claims that he was innocent and the victim of an "emotionally-charged witch hunt."

Appleton soon deleted the tweet and eventually her account, signing off with the message: "Beginning to wish I hadn't posted that...it doesn't matter who you are or the what the industry is, just be a decent human being."

Vogue has said it will not work with Richardson again.

“We have no plans to work with him in the future,” the communications director for Vogue U.S., Hildy Kuryk, told BuzzFeed.

Quentin Tarantino Is Completely Changing His New Movie After The Script Leaked Online

Quentin Tarantino

It looks like Quentin Tarantino is moving forward with his next film "The Hateful Eight" after all.

While performing a "one-night only" live reading of the script in Los Angeles, Tarantino said he was working on a second draft to the film, according to Variety.

The reading, which cost audience members $150-$200 to attend, included Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Amber Tamblyn, Tim Roth, and Bruce Dern.

Back in January, Tarantino scrapped production on the film after he found out the script he gave to six people leaked online.

That resulted in a lawsuit with Gawker after the site published an article directing readers to a link to download a PDF of the script.

"The Hateful Eight" was set to be another Western, following the director's work on Oscar-nominated "Django Unchained."

Instead, Tarantino told Deadline he was going to publish the work as a book and then consider revisiting the idea on film in about five years.

According to Tarantino, the leaked version of the script, which resulted in the entire cast dying at the film's end, will serve as a first draft. The new version of the film, set in Wyoming a few years after the Civil War, will include a different ending that may be "removed or rewritten altogether."

The Most Powerful Person At Every Age

0
0

Most Powerful People at Every Age_03 updatedFrom Prince William and Kate Middleton's royal bundle of joy — third in line of succession to the British throne — to 98-year-old David Rockefeller, the oldest billionaire alive, it's evident that authority transcends shape, size, and age.

Power is, in fact, relative to a person's capacity to enact change or direct the behavior of others when compared to his or her peer's ability to do the same.

In creating this list, we considered three criteria to determine power. A person's sphere of influence was the greatest indicator, followed by potential for acquiring future power, and estimated net worth. If two candidates of the same age seemed equally powerful, their net worth served as the deciding factor.

Now it's time to meet the most powerful people in politics, tech, finance, entertainment, sports, retail, and culture, ages 0 to 100.

AGE 0: Prince George of Cambridge

Son of Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

What makes him powerful: After his grandfather and father, the royal bundle of joy is third in line to succeed his great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. In April, the 8-month-old embarked on his first royal tour, a 19-day visit to New Zealand and Australia.

AGE 1: Margaret Laura “Mila” Hager

Granddaughter of former President George W. Bush

What makes her powerful: The younger twin daughter of Laura and George W. Bush, Jenna Bush Hager and her husband, Henry Hager, gave birth last year to their first child, Margaret Laura Hager. Little "Mila" joins the Bush family as the first granddaughter — and great-granddaughter — to two former U.S. presidents.

AGE 2: Blue Ivy Carter

Daughter of Beyoncé and Jay Z

What makes her powerful: Blue Ivy — a name her parents tried (unsuccessfully) to trademark — is the offspring of hip-hop and pop's two biggest moguls. Netflix Is Raising Prices For New Subscribers

Netflix announced today that it will raise prices for new subscribers.

The price increase will go into effect later this quarter. It'll cost between $1 and $2 more per month, depending on the country you live in. Netflix subscriptions currently cost $7.99 per month for unlimited streaming.

Current subscribers will be able to continue paying $7.99 per month for a "generous time period," Netflix says. They won't get slapped with the price increase right away.

The news came as part of Netflix's Q1 2014 earnings report. In the report, Netflix said it successfully tested a similar price increase in Ireland.

The company justified the price increase by saying it has greatly expanded its streaming video library. It'll use the new revenue to acquire even more content.

Here's the statement from Netflix's release:

As expected, we saw limited impact from our January price increase for new members in Ireland (from
€6.99 to €7.99), which included grandfathering all existing members at €6.99 for two years. In the U.S. we have greatly improved our content selection since we introduced our streaming plan in 2010 at $7.99 per month. Our current view is to do a one or two dollar increase, depending on the country, later this quarter for new members only. Existing members would stay at current pricing (e.g. $7.99 in the U.S.) for a generous time period. These changes will enable us to acquire more content and deliver an even better streaming experience.

'Fast & Furious 7' Is Using New Technology To Replace Paul Walker With His Brothers

Universal Studios announced last week via Facebook that Paul Walker's brothers, Caleb and Cody, would be filling in missing "Fast & Furious 7" scenes in the late actor's last movie role.

"We have resumed shooting and now welcome Paul’s brothers, Caleb and Cody, into our FAST family," read part of the statement. "Caleb and Cody are helping us complete some remaining action for their brother and fill in small gaps left in production. Having them on set has made us all feel that Paul is with us too."

But how exactly is the film using Walker's brothers to replace him?

'The production team for 'FF7' will try something they have never done before ... merging archival audio of Walker's voice with his brothers' voices to fill in some gaps in the movie," sources close to the the Walker family explained to TMZ. "It will take both brothers, Caleb and Cody, to get everything to match up. Our sources say the production team tested the voice of each brother and learned that certain words sound better coming from one brother, and different ones from the other ... so they will combine them to help make the dialogue work."

And it looks like the brothers are already hard at work. The Fast7Official Instagram account posted a photo today of Caleb and Cody on set with co-star Vin Diesel, writing in the caption that "The resemblance is big!"
