The NFL Is Demanding $16.6 Million From M.I.A. After Super Bowl Snafu

Rapper M.I.A. flipping the middle finger during the Superbowl

After M.I.A. flipped the bird during the Super Bowl halftime show back in 2012, the NFL sued the singer for what was then a measly $1.5 million.

But after M.I.A. took the suit public, slamming the NFL as "powerful corporation d***-shaking," they're now trying to sue for an additional $15.1 million in "restitution."

"The figure is based on what advertisers would have paid for ads during this time," notes The Hollywood Reporter of M.I.A.'s two-minute segment during Madonna's performance that was viewed in 167 million TV households.

M.I.A. has already filed response papers, stating "The claim for restitution lacks any basis in law, fact, or logic."

The singer-rapper tells the arbitrator that the "continued pursuit of this proceeding is transparently an exercise by the NFL intended solely to bully and make an example of Respondents for daring to challenge NFL."

Yesterday, M.I.A. tweeted pictures of a document from the NFL, showing exactly what they wanted from her. "This is what they want me to sign, that I've been fighting for two years on top of $16 million," she wrote

As Rolling Stone explains, "Using a tiered system based on her income, included in an image, the NFL allegedly requested percentages of her salary depending on how much she made. Were she to make between $500,000 and $2.5 million in a year, it would collect 50 percent of her gross earnings. Should she top out over $5 million, it would take everything."

MIA tweet

M.I.A. is arguing that other musicians have also pushed the limits during past Super Bowl halftime shows, such as Michael Jackson "grabbing his crotch" in 1993 or Prince's suggestive performance in 2007.

She also claims that the NFL and NBC should hold themselves responsible for the failure of their five-second delay, which could have censored her. "Any alleged fault or liability of [M.I.A.] should be diminished by NBC's dereliction," the document reads. "Discovery has not been taken yet to determine whether contractually NBC owed a duty to NFL to properly operate the delay system."

Arnold Schwarzenegger Says The Next 'Terminator' Will Feel A Lot Like 'Terminator 2'

terminator 2 judgment day

He will be back.

Yes, a fifth "Terminator" film is coming to theaters next summer with Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising his role as the titular character.

Called "Terminator: Genesis," the next film will star Jai Courtney ("A Good Day to Die Hard") as Kyle Reese and Emilia Clarke ("Game of Thrones").

Ahead of the actor's new release "Sabotage" out later this month, Schwarzenegger spoke with Collider about his return to the "Terminator" franchise.

It sounds like the series may be heading back to its roots.

"The way it reads, it has the same feel of Terminator 2," says Schwarzenegger. "It’s big.  There’s hardcore action and it has some really great visual effects in there, but not over the top."

"Terminator 2: Judgment Day" featured Schwarzenegger as a good guy trying to protect the son of Sarah Connor and was well received critically and at the box office. The 1991 film made more than $500 million worldwide.

"Genesis" has been in production for awhile and while there aren't a lot of details out plotwise, you can probably bet it won't have many ties to 2009's "Terminator Salvation." (That film, starring Christian Bale was supposed to start up a new trilogy.)

Skydance Productions and distributor Paramount will be financing the film.

"Terminator: Genesis" begins filming at the end of April in New Orleans and is set for a July 1, release.

Sunday's Shocking Episode Of ‘The Walking Dead' Was Even More Brutal In The Comics

$

If you tuned in to watch “The Walking Dead” Sunday night, you probably weren’t expecting what you saw on screen.

For those who haven’t watched the latest episode yet, you’ll want to stop reading.

carol lizzie the walking deadThe controversial episode showed the killing of one young child, Mika (Kyla Kennedy), by another child, Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino). As a result, Carol (Melissa McBride) ended up killing Lizzie in order to protect herself, another group member Tyrese, and baby Judith.

Reactions to the episode were mixed.

carol the walking deadIt left a lot of viewers speechless and in awe of both Melissa McBride's and the girls’ performances.

While fans seemed to enjoy it, noting how the end seemed to parallel John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men,” critics didn’t seem as excited about the episode with many wondering whether it wasnecessary.

While the episode certainly gained a lot of views (it was viewed by 12.9 million) and conversation — something series creator Robert Kirkman predicted— this was a scene that has been coming for a long time on the AMC drama.

Unlike most, I wasn’t surprised when I tuned in Sunday. I had seen this play out previously quite some time ago in the comics just in a different, more brutal fashion.

Instead of Lizzie and Mika, the two are envisioned as younger twin boys, Ben and Billy, early on in the comic series. At this point and time, the crew isn’t separated as they are on the current season of “The Walking Dead.” There’s a large group with many characters including some who are long gone on the show (Andrea / Dale).

In issue 60, we first see that Ben, like Lizzie, had a knack for dissecting animals.ben the walking dead comic

In the following issue, Ben kills his brother and (again similar to Lizzie) believes he’ll be OK once he returns as a zombie.

the walking dead comic

After much debate on what to do with Ben between the group, it’s Carl — who’s a younger kid at this point — who ends up offing Ben while everyone else is sleeping.

the walking dead

In the comics, this entire scene came out of left field. There were no signs Ben may kill his brother. The show did a much better job of set up and execution by giving Lizzie's character (some) background. (The series added that Lizzie really believed the zombies weren’t completely dangerous but that they were just misunderstood.)

As well, when audiences are introduced to the idea of taking Lizzie's life, it's a tad more gentle in Sunday night's episode. Carol delivers a pretty sound argument to convince the audience why this killing would be justified. In the comics, Carl is pretty blunt on why he murders another.

the walking dead carl comics

Some critics suggested Lizzie didn’t need to be killed and that maybe she should be locked up. That route was tried in the comics. Moreso, there was actually a giant argument about the ethics of taking a child’s life if they were a danger to the entire group.

the walking dead comic

So why change it up?

On “The Talking Dead,” the after show to “The Walking Dead,” it’s previously been said the series often gives comic creator Robert Kirkman a second chance to reimagine specific scenes in different scenarios.

We've seen this before and the scene we saw played out Sunday night is one example of that.

Did the two young girls need to be killed off in "The Walking Dead"? Maybe not, but fans will know it did fall in line with the comics and that it wasn't a random act for ratings.

CNN contributor Sally Kohn had quite the personal comeback after actress Mia Farrow sent a tweet making fun of the cable channel's round-the-clock coverage of the missing Malaysian plane.

Farrow tweeted a photo of a CNN host standing on a 3D display showing a mock radar and a jet along with the comment, "Has TV 'news' gone completely crazy."

Kohn responded by taking a jab at Farrow's son, Ronan Farrow, who began hosting an MSNBC show in February.

"Does hiring your son support or refute that assertion?" Kohn wrote.

As of this writing, Farrow hasn't responded to Kohn's comment. View the full exchange in its original form below.

The company just announced a virtual reality headset for the next-gen console at this year's annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Called Project Morpheus, the black and white headpiece looks way slicker than the Oculus Rift virtual headset we've tried out in the past.

Here's a look at the prototype:

IGN reports the prototype will be available to developers to start creating games soon.

The headset will interact with Sony's camera and Move technologies.

Microsoft may really want to get to work on their virtual reality IllumiRoom now.

Bryan Cranston Wants You To Know He's Not Crazy In New 'Godzilla' Trailer

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures released a new international trailer for "Godzilla" that teases a lot of new footage for the reboot.

Bryan Cranston stars in the film, along with Ken Watanabe and Elizabeth Olsen. We won't spoil much because the trailer speaks for itself, but it sounds like the government is trying to cover up the monster's existence as a natural disaster. Naturally, Cranston's character, Joe Brody, isn't too happy about that.

Overall, the movie looks pretty awesome so we're hoping it doesn't disappoint.

"Godzilla" is in theaters May 16.

14 Movies That Used A Lot Less CGI Than You Think

$

0

aaron paul need for speed

If you headed to theaters this weekend to see "Need for Speed," the film included some crazy stunts.

Audiences saw a Ford Mustang jump three lanes of traffic in Detroit and get airlifted by a U.S. Army helicopter.

One thing you may not have realized was that the DreamWorks' film was made entirely without any computer-generated imagery, commonly known as "CGI."

Director Scott Waugh — a former stuntman — wanted to make the action look as real as possible.

“My philosophy has always been that you can’t break physics because if you do it hurts the story because then the characters don’t apply to physics either,” said Waugh

In Hollywood, while most films employ CGI, you may be surprised by the movies that opt out of using digital enhancements.

The weightlessness in "Apollo 13" was thanks to a military plane that recreated zero gravity.

When it came to achieving weightlessness on screen, Tom Hanks and the rest of the crew in 1995's "Apollo 13" had less help from Hollywood and more from NASA.

The cast and crew used NASA's "Vomit Comet," a Boeing 707 "that climbs to 30,000 ft. and then arcs into a steep dive, creating a 23-second period of weightlessness." Director Ron Howard liked it so much he put the set of the film right into the plane itself.

"If we’d had to do it with wires — if we really would’ve had to try to create the weightlessness with wires, I shudder to think what the movie would have looked like," said Howard.

Tom Cruise actually climbed the Burj Khalifa for "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol."

Even more astounding than Dubai's Burj Khalifa's height (2,722 feet) is that Tom Cruise actually scaled the upper levels of the building in "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol."

"When you’re on top and you look out, people are going to think it’s CG [computer-generated], and it’s not," Gregg Smrz, the film's stunt coordinator, told the L.A. Times.

While a green screen would have been a lot easier and safer, Cruise insisted on climbing with special harnesses and rigging about 1,700 feet off the ground (that's 250 feet higher than the Empire State Building) in order to pull off the seemingly impossible scene.

The face-melting ending from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was done using melting wax sculptures.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" won the 1981 Oscar for Best Visual Effects, but the iconic "face-melting" ending used nothing more than practical effects.

"The melting of Toht, the Nazi villain’s head in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' required an innovative approach," visual-effects artist Dennis Muren told Vanity Fair. "It was decided that the head would be sculpted in wax ... filmed at a speed slower than normal, high heat was applied and the head appears to melt rapidly revealing layers of skin, muscle, and bone when played back at normal speed."

In addition, the ghosts that float during the Lost Ark ceremony were silken puppets floating in a tank of water.

Sony Pictures released another new trailer for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

The final trailer hints at the larger Spidey universe we’ll likely see played out on screen for the next several films as Sony focuses on bringing Spider-Man's many villains to the big screen.

The footage is a lot of the same that we’ve already seen, but we probably see more of Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin villain — along with other members of the Sinister Six — than before.

Andrew Garfield returns as Spider-Man in theaters May 2.

Why The Director Of 'Blackfish' Hasn't Made A 'Penny' Off The Film

$

Gabriela Cowperthwaite

Since its July release, controversial SeaWorld documentary "Blackfish" — about the devastating consequences of keeping whales in captivity  has raked in $2 million at the box office.

The film, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and debuted on CNN in October, has now been seen by roughly 25 million viewers.

As a result of the documentary, 28% of Americans say they are less likely to visit SeaWorld, a handful of high-profile musicians canceled gigs at the theme park, and SeaWorld shares have taken a beating as California considers passing a new bill banning the captivity of whales and dolphins.

But despite its obvious impact, "Blackfish" director Gabriela Cowperthwaite "hasn't made a penny" off the movie.

The 43-year-old filmmaker, who currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and twin sons, tells the L.A. Times' Amy Kaufman that she made "Zero" from the movie, despite spending the majority of her time promoting the film since its release last year.

"Blackfish" was acquired at Sundance by CNN and Magnolia Films for roughly $1 million, but all of the money went to paying back investors.

Cowperthwaite and her producing partner, Manny Oteyza, took initial funds from Judy Bart and Erica Kahn, who were looking for a way to break into the film business.

The investment was enough to fund the first few months of production, but with at least six more months needed to complete the film, the financiers said they had no more money to give. Desperate to complete it, Cowperthwaite and Oteyza deferred a year's worth of salary so that Bart and Kahn could contribute enough to finish the film.

While Cowperthwaite admits she isn't a "business-minded shark," she could eventually get paid if "Blackfish" ends up making enough money through DVD and on-demand sales.

In the meantime, Cowperthwaite is already ready for her next project.

"I've been doing this for over a year now, and have come this far as a steward, which seems to have worked," she told the LA Times. "So I feel a kind of responsibility to keep steering this in the right direction. But just how do you continue to do that when in your heart of hearts you know that you should be moving on to your next film?"

Veteran documentary filmmaker Louie Psihoyos, whose dolphin slaughter flick, "The Cove," won an Oscar in 2010, echoes her sentiments.

"Gabriela is now part of the vortex we all get swept up in," he says. "When you start to realize that you have the potential to really move the needle forward on big issues, it feeds you in ways that can be much more profound than just getting a paycheck."

Hollywood Is Turning ‘The Giver’ Into A Movie, Here’s The First Trailer

We've been waiting for this for a long time.

Hollywood is turning Lois Lowry’s 1993 best-selling novel “The Giver” into a movie. The Weinstein Company released the first trailer for the film today. As far as young adult adaptations go, we’re pretty excited.

The film has a huge cast ranging from Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges to Alexander Skarsgard (“True Blood”), Katie Holmes, and Taylor Swift.

Brenton Thwaites, who will be in this summer’s live-action “Maleficent” adaptation, will star as the lead.

While we’ve seen a lot of trailers for other young adult adaptations, like upcoming “Divergent,” and more recently, “The Maze Runner," Lowry’s “The Giver” is pretty well known, if not mandatory school reading growing up.

Here’s the official synopsis from The Weinstein Company:

“The haunting story of THE GIVER centers on Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community.”

"The Giver" is in theaters August 15.

Check it out below:

The film teases a website, Destiny.org, but it doesn’t seem to be working right now.

Russell Crowe And 'Noah' Director Plead For Pope Francis Endorsement At The Vatican

Russell Crowe pope vatican

"Noah" star Russell Crowe and the film's director, Darren Aronofsky, briefly met with Pope Francis I in Vatican City on Wednesday.

The pair had a brief exchange with the pope after watching the pontiff make his weekly address in St. Peter’s Square, but a papal endorsement is unlikely considering the pope does not watch films.

Despite not opening in theaters until next week, "Noah" has already caused much controversy and spurred debate in religious communities that believe the film takes too many liberties with the Biblical account of the flood. The "Noah" team hoped the pope's endorsement would ease tensions surrounding the film.

After lobbying for a private meeting with the pope, Crowe and Aronofsky were forced to settle for a brief encounter during the weekly Wednesday address that is open to the public and draws up to tens of thousands of people.

Aronofsky said after the meeting, "Pope Francis’ comments on stewardship and our responsibility to the natural world are inspirational and of the utmost importance. When the opportunity to hear him speak in person on the anniversary of his first year in office I couldn’t miss the chance to listen and learn."

Crowe, meanwhile, took to Twitter to give his followers a play-by-play of the day:

And here's Rooney Mara, the 28-year-old actress who was just cast as the "Tiger Lily" character in a new live-action adaptation titled "Pan" from director Joe Wright.

Rooney Mara

The two don't exactly look identical, and fans are not pleased.

A new petition protesting Warner Bros.' casting has already collected over 4,300 signatures, after launching on Tuesday.

The Care2 petition notes that the original character in the J. M. Barrie story is a Native American princess, stating: "The casting choice is particularly shameful for a children's movie. Telling children their role models must all be white is unacceptable."

But as Variety reports"The studio took on exhaustive search in finding the right girl to play Lily, looking at other actresses such as Lupita Nyong'o and 'Blue is the Warmest Color' thespian Adele Exarchopoulos before going out to Mara for the role."

White actors Hugh Jackman and Garrett Hedlund are also set to star in "Pan," which the petition takes issue with as well, stating, "Not so multi-racial after all, Warner Bros. Tell Warner Bros. to stop casting white actors to play characters originally written as people of color!"

Twitter has also been abuzz over the casting controversy:

"Pan" is slated for release on July 17, 2015.

These Maps Show All The Ways Movies Have Destroyed America

godzilla destruction

If you've seen the recent "Godzilla" trailers, you know that Las Vegas is among the many locations to get destroyed in the film.

We've seen Hollywood destroy America from the East to West coasts on screen; however, no one's really tried to organize where, when, and how often different areas of the U.S. has been ravaged over the years.

Deadspin took a crack at it, and while they admit their list isn't perfect, it's a pretty great break down.

The site reviewed A LOT of disaster flicks, from "King Kong" and "Deluge" in 1933 to last year's "Pacific Rim," categorizing disaster flicks into 10 sub-genres — Monster Attacks, Creature Attacks, Climactic Events (floods/tornadoes), Geologic Events (volcanoes/earthquakes), Infections, Mankind (terrorism/nukes), Alien Attacks, Space Rocks, Superhero Battles, and Sharknados (for fun).

They then plotted the 189 movie attacks across 10 maps to see where the most damage has occurred in the U.S. Unsurprisingly, most take place in Los Angeles and New York.

Deadspin gave us permission to run a few of the maps below.

You can take a look at all of the maps and movies here.

Monster Attacks On Film Across America

New York and California win this category with versions of "King Kong," "Godzilla," "Jurassic Park: The Lost World," and "Pacific Rim."

Creature Attacks On Film Across America

"The Birds" and "Birdemic" take over California while Maine is home to water lurkers in "Jaws," "Jaws 2," and "Lake Placid."

Obama Ellen Tweet

During the Academy Awards last month, Ellen DeGeneres' star-studded selfie de-throned President Obama and the first lady's victory embrace as the most retweeted tweet of all time.

Ellen's picture has currently been "favorited" nearly 2 million time and retweeted nearly 3.5 million times. In comparison, Obama's "Four More Years" tweet has just 296,000 "favorites" and 780,000 retweets.

The POTUS appeared on DeGeneres' daytime talk show Wednesday and the host admitted, "I was aiming to break your record of retweets and I apologize for doing it but we broke your retweet record."

"I heard about that," said Obama via satellite from the White House. "I thought it was a pretty cheap stunt myself  getting a bunch of celebrities in the background and feeding them pizza."
