How Sony Makes Music For Your Favorite Games

0

playstation hq

Music has been an integral part of the experience gamers get out of their favorite past times.

It can get you pumped up for an adrenaline-fueled action sequence, or lay the emotional tracks for a scene full of important dialogue. But unlike movie viewers, the players have control over many situations they encounter in a video game.

In a game — but especially in an open-world game like Grand Theft Auto or Sony's upcoming Infamous: Second Son — the music has to react to what you're doing so that it doesn't sound mismatched.

You don't want percussion-heavy combat music when you're just walking around taking in the sights, and you don't want quiet, emotional pieces playing while you mow down dozens of enemies in an intense firefight.

Yesterday, I was able to take a tour of Sony's state-of-the-art PlayStation Music Studio at the company's headquarters in San Mateo, Calif., where I met the guys responsible for the music in some of the best games released in the last few years.

Here's what I learned about their process:

This is Bradley Meyer, audio director at Sucker Punch, the studio making Infamous: Second Son. He's responsible for all of the sound in Sucker Punch's games, from the musical score to the sound effects you hear as you walk around in the game's version of Seattle.

playstation hq sucker punch developerHis counterpart at PlayStation is Jonathan Mayer, a senior music manager. Mayer helps Meyer with the logistics of getting the music right, from lining up the right composers and bands for a project to the specifics of deciding what songs are working in a game.

playstation hq music studioOnce they've settled on a direction, they can bring artists in to their state-of-the-art recording studio to start laying down variations of songs — they make several versions of most pieces, so that gamers don't get bored of the same music after 10 (or more!) hours of gameplay.

playstation hq music studioFor instance, Sucker Punch wanted to give Infamous: Second Son an electric-industrial rock feel without simply using instrumental versions of existing songs. So the team flew down a bunch of rockers from Seattle, put them up in a hotel, and had them perform their songs live in the PlayStation studio.

playstation hq band performanceOnce they've gotten the actual music recorded, it's time for mixing and editing. PlayStation Director of Music Chuck Doud gave me a walkthrough of their amazing setup and the studio's general workflow. The centerpiece of this mixing room is the Euphonix System 5 board. It's powered by a Mac Pro running Avid's ProTools audio software.

playstation hq music studio directorThe projector and audio setup in the studio is so nice that employees sometimes come in here to do their gaming when it isn't being used for one of the 25 or more games PlayStation might be working on at a given time.

playstation hq music studioAs soon as usable tracks are ready, one of the most important people involved in the entire process can start his work. This is Andrew Buresh, a music editor at PlayStation. He's the guy who makes it so that the music in a game changes appropriately when you enter combat or start a cut scene, making his job a unique combination between engineer and artist.

playstation hq sucker punch developerYou can see the end result of this team's work in the video below, which is the last gameplay trailer for Infamous: Second Son we'll get to see before the game's release on March 21.

Tyler Perry's new movie "The Single Moms Club" bombed this weekend earning $8.3 million.

The film starring Nia Long ("Big Momma's House") and Amy Smart ("The Butterfly Effect") was predicted to take in nearly double.

It's Perry's first movie to debut at under $10 million, making it his worst opening ever at theaters.

"The Single Moms Club" is the last film Perry will release with Lionsgate as he focuses on his television deal at Oprah's OWN network.

He already has three successful series on the network — "The Haves and the Have Nots," "For Better or Worse," and "Love Thy Neighbor" — all of which have helped propel ratings on OWN.

Neil deGrasse Tyson Makes Up With The Dwarf Planet Pluto In This Adorable Clip

Neil deGrasse Tyson made up with the non-planet Pluto in a clip from Late Night With Seth Meyers, published March 14. The two have had a long-running feud over the dwarf planet's status.

The "dwarf planet" was reclassified in 2006 because it's not a typical planet — it has a very strange orbit. The deal was sealed when Eris, another dwarf planet, was discovered in 2005. DeGrasse Tyson even points out that there are six moons in our solar system alone that are bigger than Pluto.

But, they make up at the end, deGrasse Tyson saying: "That doesn't mean you are not important. You see, Pluto, the atoms that make up all life on Earth came from the same stars that make up everything in our solar system — moons, planets, and even you. We all share the same origins and we are all connected, because the entire universe lives within us all"

A Cartoon Beat Out 'Need For Speed' At Theaters This Weekend

need for speed aaron paul

Audiences did not have the "Need for Speed" this weekend.

DreamWorks' adaptation of the popular video game franchise starring Aaron Paul ("Breaking Bad") didn't finish first or even second this weekend.

The new film debuted under $20 million behind last week's new releases.

Instead, DreamWorks Animation's "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" (separate from DreamWorks) and Warner Bros. and Legendary's "300" ruled the weekend.

"Need for Speed" certainly won't be a bust. The estimated $66 million film is playing well overseas. So far, it's made $45.6 million overseas.

Overall, it wasn't a good week for new releases as Tyler Perry's latest movie, "The Single Moms Club" bombed over the weekend becoming the director's lowest opening in theaters.

The limited opening for Kickstarter-funded "Veronica Mars" starring Kristen Bell debuted to $2 million in nearly 300 theaters.

The big winner is Wes Anderson's latest movie, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" which made $3.6 million in just 66 theaters. Last weekend, the movie premiered in just four theaters to $2 million.

Here's a full look at the box-office weekend:

10. "Veronica Mars": $2 million
9. "Frozen": $2.1 million
8. "The Grand Budapest Hotel": $3.6 million
7. "Son of God": $5.4 million
6. "The Lego Movie": $7.7 million
5. "Tyler Perry's The Single Moms Club": $8.3 million
4. "Non-Stop": $10.6 million
3. "Need for Speed": $17.8 million
2. "300: Rise of An Empire": $19.1 million
1. "Mr. Peabody & Sherman": $21.2 million

Oprah Is Selling Harpo Studios For $32 Million To Chicago Developer

CHICAGO (AP) — Oprah Winfrey is selling Harpo Studios in Chicago to a developer, but the studio will remain on the property for another two years.

Winfrey filmed "The Oprah Winfrey Show" at the studio from 1990 to 2011, when she ended the talk show to start the Oprah Winfrey Network on cable.

"We have entered into a purchasing agreement with Sterling Bay for the four-building Harpo Studios campus in Chicago's West Loop," Harpo told Crain's Chicago Business in a statement. "We expect the transaction to be closed in 30 days. The property will be leased back to Harpo for two years and the studio will continue to produce programming for OWN."

About 200 people work at the 3.5-acre campus, which will sell for about $32 million, Crain's reported Sunday. Harpo said it expects to close the transaction in 30 days.

Winfrey first came to Chicago in 1984 to WLS-TV's morning talk show, "A.M. Chicago." A month later, the show was No. 1 in the market and renamed "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 1985.

Winfrey moved to Harpo Studios in 1990 and is credited with transforming the once-gritty industrial area to a neighborhood filled with families and trendy restaurants.

In 2011, then-Chicago Mayor Richard Daley named the street outside Harpo Studios "Oprah Winfrey Way."

The 'Netflix For Pirated Movies' Is Back, And Its Creators Say It Will Never Die

Popcorn Time

A desktop app called Popcorn Time launched last week gaining considerable attention for presenting pirated streaming movies in a clean and easy to use format. It was essentially a Netflix for pirated movies.

By Friday, it was taken down. The anonymous team of developers wrote a blog post proclaiming their motivation was "we need to move on with our lives."

Now, Torrentfreak reported that a team of developers called YTS resurrected the project and officially relaunched it Sunday.

Business Insider reached out to the new team for comment about the future of Popcorn Time. They wouldn't disclose their identities but voiced their opinions over email.

"The decision to close the project was against the community and users will, but fortunately, ideas never die and specifically this idea that wears an open source dress from day one," the developers said.

YTS explained they were surprised that the original team dismantled the app so quickly. This new team's goal was to make the app quickly available to everyone and make sure it was perfect without risking taking it down again. They concluded that their version would never die and new updates would be coming in the near future.

Twitter Goes Nuts After San Francisco Radio Station Plays Nelly's 'Hot in Herre' On Loop For 4 Days

0

Nelly Hot In HerreA San Francisco radio station has been playing Nelly's 2002 hit "Hot in Herre" on repeat since Friday.

Turns out, the loop is part of a publicity stunt before the station changes to a new format. The Univision-owned Latino Mix 105.7, is relaunching as Hot 105.7, RadioInsights.com reports.

Apparently, playing a song on loop is a common publicity stunt to mark a radio station’s format change. This weekend's prank reminded many in the Bay Area of the 1992 format change of 107.7. to WiLD 94.9 after playing “Wild Thing” by Tone Loc for three days straight. In July, a new Toronto radio station played Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" for a full week.

Meanwhile, San Franciscans were baffled by the non-stop Nelly tunes.

By early Saturday morning, the topic was at the top of Reddit. It wasn't long before the hashtag #Nelly1057 was trending on Twitter  and the jokes were endless.

Relive the 2002 hit below:

Harry Potter Fans Can Ride The 'Hogwarts Express' At Universal Studios This Summer

Hogwarts Express

It's the train that Muggles have been waiting for. New details have emerged about the upcoming attractions at Universal Studios' Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and apparently the Hogwarts Express ride is going to be kind of a big deal.

The theme park released a statement Friday announcing the features for the fantastical train, which will kick off at Platform 9 3/4 and subsequently pass everything from Hagrid on his motorbike to Buckbeak the Hippogriff, the Knight Bus, and even dementors.

But the coolest part is that the ride isn't set in some massive, enclosed warehouse, but actually transports visitors from "London" at Universal Studios to "Hogsmeade" at Islands of Adventure. It will run in both directions.

The magical train is being set up in conjunction with the Diagon Alley park at Universal Studios, which will include Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, the Leaky Cauldron, and the anticipated "Escape from Gringotts" ride. The new park is set to open Summer 2014.

Check out Universal's video to get all the details on the new attractions.

Stanley Kubrick's Daughter Shares Intimate Photos Of Growing Up On His Film Sets

0
0

Director Stanley Kubrick is responsible for hit films such as "A Clockwork Orange," "The Shining," "Lolita," "2001: A Space Odyssey," and "Eyes Wide Shut," among many others.

Kubrick's daughter, Vivian Kubrick, constantly accompanied her father on his various film sets throughout her childhood and teenage years.

Vivian, now 53, had cameos in a number of his movies including "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Barry Lyndon." She shot the behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of "The Shining" at the age of 24 and composed the score for "Full Metal Jacket" in 1987 under the pseudonym of Abigail Mead, according to OpenCulture.

The father/daughter were extremely close until the late 90s when Vivian joined the Church of Scientology and cut off contact with her family.

It wasn't until her famous father's funeral in 1999 that Vivian reportedly reunited with her family.

But apparently Vivian was feeling sentimental last week, when she posted some very personal photos on Twitter of herself on various film sets with her father.

"In Memory of my Dad,” she wrote on one. “Who I loved with all my heart and soul."

Take a look at more behind-the-scenes photos below:

Tyler Perry’s Latest Box Office Bomb Shows A Terrible Trend In His Movies

Tyler Perry's newest movie, "The Single Moms Club," bombed over the weekend, making just $8.3 million at the box office.

By far, it was Perry's worst opening yet.

The film, about a group of women who form a support group, follows a recent trend of Perry films that have debuted poorly.

We took a look back at the director's 15 films ranging from "Madea's Family Reunion" up until his latest movie out this weekend.

tyler perry's box office openings

Time after time, Perry's "Madea" series has repeatedly been the director's one successful box-office hit; however, the franchise's latest installment, "A Madea Christmas," may prove it's wearing its welcome.

The sequel debuted to $16 million and has made $52.5 million worldwide.

tyler perry madea films

Perry's box-office success began a descent after "Madea's Witness Protection" in 2012.

His films aren't exactly huge risks as the production costs for most of his movies hover around $20 million.

"The Single Moms Club" is Perry's final film with Lionsgate as the director heads to TV to focus his full attention on Oprah's OWN network where he heads multiple successful series including ratings winner "The Haves and The Have Nots."

His next project will be an adaptation of "The Single Moms Club" for the network.

'Veronica Mars' Kickstarter Backers Peeved After Download Problems

0
0

Veronica Mars Kristen Bell

Fans who donated funds to turn the cult-favorite "Veronica Mars" TV show into a feature-length film are annoyed after being unable to view a free version opening day on Flixster/UltraViolet, as promised.

Flixster/UltraViolet was the distribution service chosen by the filmmakers that should have allowed users to watch the movie online using a multi-platform digital rights management and storage system called UltraViolet.

The problem is, it didn't work  but fans who weren't a part of the Kickstarter campaign were easily able to pay a small fee to watch the film on Amazon or iTunes. When Flixster wasn't working, many fans who had already paid via Kickstarter ended up just downloading the movie for a fee, or seeing it in theaters. But they weren't happy about it, and expressed their displeasure via Twitter.

"We are, of course, working diligently to ensure that all the 'Veronica Mars' backers have a great experience," said Warner Bros. Pictures' spokesperson in response.

In order to try and make amends, Warner Bros. Pictures sent out an email on Saturday offering their assistance by giving viewers three options from "Veronica Mars" movie customer support (via E! Online).

Option 1: If you wish to use Flixster and need help with technical issues, customer support will do their best to help you ASAP.

Option 2: If you wish to download Veronica Mars from another service, such as iTunes or Amazon, go ahead and then email the receipt to Veronica Mars customer service and you'll receive a refund for the full amount paid.

Option 3: Receive a $10 refund (the amount pledged via Kickstarter to get a digital download) through Amazon Payments.

Despite the technical glitches, the much-hyped "Veronica Mars" movie managed to rake in $2 million its first weekend in theaters.

Although with a record-breaking $5.7 million collected on Kickstarter to fund the film, the movie barely made it onto the list of top-10 highest earning films at the box office this weekend.

But Jeff Goldstein, executive vice president of theatrical distribution at Warner Bros., is still impressed, telling  EW, "Our result starting with our Thursday fan events was $260,000. You add that together with our weekend for a total of $2 million from 291 theaters? That's pretty significant."

THEN & NOW: The Cast Of 'Lost' 10 Years Later

lost jack

Later this year will mark the 10 years since “Lost” premiered on ABC.

To celebrate, executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse along with seven cast members reunited over the weekend at PaleyFest, the annual two-week event in LA consisting of television show panels for fans.

Among the cool trivia bits we learned, it turns out the writers also disliked random background characters Nikki and Paulo, Daniel Dae Kim (who played Jin) wasn’t speaking (real) Korean for a while on the show, and Yunjin Kim’s (Sun) role was written just for the actress.

And if you’re still reeling nearly four years later about the show’s controversial ending, Lindelof and Cuse confirmed once and for all that the castaways were not dead the entire time. (But you probably already knew that.)

Since “Lost” ended in 2010, some of the cast has tried their luck in Hollywood. Others have ended up on different TV networks while many have reconnected on one successful ABC series.

THEN: Matthew Fox was the leader of the Oceanic 815 survivors, Jack Shephard.

NOW: Fox has tried to become a breakout movie star, first in 2008's "Vantage Point" and as a villain in flop "Alex Cross."

Most recently he had a small role in zombie film "World War Z" and is currently filming horror flick "Welcome to Harmony."

Fox also had some trouble with the law. In 2011, a Cleveland bus driver accused him of battery, while in May 2012, he was arrested for DUI in Oregon.

Co-star Dominic Monaghan accused Fox of beating women, an accusation Fox vehemently denied in Men's Fitness.

THEN: Evangeline Lilly played fugitive bad girl Kate Austin.

L'Wren Scott's Fashion Company Was $6 Million In Debt Before Her Death

L'Wren Scott

Fashion designer L'Wren Scott shocked friends and fans alike when she was found dead of an apparent suicide Monday in her luxurious $5.6 million Manhattan apartment.

But, it turns out the glamorous image Scott portrayed on Instagram wasn't what it appeared.

In recent years, Scott's fashion line fell $6 million in debt.

An October balance sheet revealed that Scott’s London-based business, LS Fashion Ltd., was $5.9 million in the red for 2012 after recording a $4.2 million deficit for 2011, according to PageSix.

Her company's debt had been growing for years, going from $2,120,015.67 in 2009 to $3,063,160.87 in 2010.

Last month, Scott abruptly canceled her London Fashion Week show citing "production delays in key show and couture pieces" — but the truth is that her business was crumbling.

"L'Wren was in a lot of financial trouble. She was unable to pay her staff and her suppliers and it had been going on for a very long period of time," a source in the fashion industry told Mail Online. "She wanted so badly for things to be a success."

Despite her financial problems, Scott reportedly never asked her boyfriend of 12 years, Mick Jagger — who is worth a reported $305 million — for any assistance.

Scott felt strongly about maintaning her independence despite her famous boyfriend, previously stating, "I’m a fashion designer. I don’t want to be defined as someone’s girlfriend."

She continued, "You always wonder if people will pay attention to the hard work that goes into what you do. And when you’re taking something on your own, it’s your company, your investment – your life."
