Shailene Woodley Will Earn A Pretty Measly Paycheck To Star In $85 Million 'Divergent'

Shailene Woodley Divergent

Shailene Woodley is just 22-years-old, but the actress  who earned a Golden Globe nomination playing George Clooney's daughter in 2012's "The Descendants"  is already set to carry the much-hyped, three-part "Divergent" movie franchise.

The film, in theaters March 21st, is based on author Veronica Roth's best-selling trilogy set in a future dystopia where people are split up into five factions. Box office ticket sales are already outpacing the first "Twilight."

Despite the film's reported $85 million production budget, Woodley will earn just $250,000 to $500,000 for the first installment, according to The Hollywood Reporter's sources.

But Woodley will likely make much more for the second and third installments, "Insurgent" and "Allegiant," slated for release in March 2015 and March 2016.

For the first "Hunger Games" film, for example, Jennifer Lawrence reportedly earned $500,000 upfront, plus bonuses based on box office performance.

Lawrence reportedly negotiated a $10 million deal for the second installment "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," made easier by Oscar-nominated performances in "Winter's Bone" and "Silver Linings Playbook." According to THR, "The figure is a combination of salary, bonuses and escalators."

Ironically, it was Lawrence who convinced Woodley to take the "Divergent" role in the first place.

An admitted fan of Woodley's ABC Family Tv series "Secret Life Of An American Teenager," Lawrence e-mailed her  at the urging of Lionsgate studio head Erik Feig  to sell her colleague on the pros of leading a Young Adult franchise.

Woodley told THR the emails from Lawrence went like this: "You must do it. You will not regret it for a second. Yes, there are some hard things, but there are so many beautiful things that will come from an opportunity like this."

And with Feig admitting that Woodley was the "studio's first and only choice" for the role, the young actress will have plenty of bargaining power when it comes to negotiating her contract for the sequels.

But while the first “Hunger Games” opened to a massive $152 million, "Divergent" is on track to rake in a lesser (but still strong) $65 million its opening weekend later this month — right on par with the first "Twilight."

So based on those numbers, things are looking good for Woodley, as "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart earned an unprecedented $25 million against 7.5% of the theatrical gross for the "Breaking Dawn" sequels of "Twilight."

Disney Interactive will lay off nearly 700 people, according to The New York Times.

That’s 26% of the video game and Internet division.

James A. Pitaro, Disney Interactive president, says the major cuts come as the company searches for new ways to make the Interactive segment profitable.

“These are large-scale changes as we focus not just on getting to profitability but sustained profitability and scalability.”

To do this, Disney is going to step away from developing in-house games start searching for new partners and rely on outside licensing.

As we’ve noted in the past, Disney’s Interactive segment is the one that continuously fails to be profitable

Despite the enduring success of Disney’s latest game Disney Infinity, other title releases from 2013 including “Where’s My Water,” a mobile puzzle game, were disappointments.

Compare Disney Interactive’s first quarter revenue and operating income with the rest of the company.

Canada's Broadcasting Regulator Says There's Not Enough Canadian Porn On TV

Canada's broadcasting regulator wants to see more locally-made porn on Canadian television, judging by a notice on its website that accuses three channels of failing to meet licensing requirements.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said three Toronto-based adult channels have failed to provide a minimum of 35 percent Canadian content.

The rules require a portion of programming to be at least partly written, produced or presented by persons in Canada, in order to bolster the local industry and showcase Canadian content.

A hearing has been scheduled for April 28 to decide whether the broadcasting licenses of AOV Adult Movie Channel, XXX Action Clips and Maleflixxx should be renewed.

The permits are set to expire at the end of August.

CRTC spokeswoman Patricia Valladao told AFP they will be asked to justify a renewal of the licenses, adding that "the CRTC has tried several times to bring the company into compliance."

The networks' parent company Channel Zero did not immediately responded to requests for comment.

But others have not been shy to speak out.

The daily National Post satirically lamented the Canadian porn industry's "reluctance to tackle distinctively Canadian issues."

And the tabloid Toronto Sun hailed the CRTC's call for more "naughty Newfoundlanders and Manitoba MILFs."

But the Globe and Mail disagreed, saying: "Unlike sitcoms or dramas, which are potentially filled with meaning that contributes to a social conversation, porn is a generic product whose national origins are as unimportant as those of... a vibrator."

But the newspaper conceded that "a porn shoot hires lighting technicians and camera operators just like any other TV production and, hey, jobs are jobs."

The CRTC also chided the channels for not providing enough closed-captioning and for not alerting the regulator of a change in ownership.

The First Teaser Trailer For 'Mad Men' Season 7 Is Very Mysterious

Why Sony Needs Its 'Annie' Remake To Do Well

annie remake cameron diaz

Sony released the first trailer for its "Annie" remake and a lot of responses aren't going over well.

Produced by Will Smith and Jay Z, the film shows the orphan (played by "Beasts of the Southern Wild" Oscar-nominee Quvenzhané Wallis) growing up in a modern-day Harlem with Cameron Diaz starring as the mean orphanage owner.

The trailer for "Annie" isn't awful; however, the snippets we see of Diaz as Ms. Hannigan definitely don't look great.

Many viewers have responded negatively across socialmedia.

Here's a sample of what people are saying about the film on Sony Picture's Facebook page:

Annie Facebook

Granted there is some positive feedback as well, but so far this isn't good news for Sony.

The studio's most recent release, "Pompeii," a disaster flick about the city’s destruction by Mount Vesuvius, bombed opening weekend. The $100 million film made $10 million in theaters.

Though the film is playing out better overseas, in two weeks the film has made $18 million domestically.

pompeii Kit Harington

However, it may end up being one of those films that relies on international revenue for performance having already made nearly $50 million overseas

That’s what happened with Sony’s other picture “After Earth” starring Will Smith last year.

The film made $60.5 million at home, but went on to earn nearly another $200 million abroad. “After Earth” cost an estimated $130 million to make.

Despite wins like Oscar-nominated "American Hustle" and "Captain Phillips” and Adam Sandler’s “Grown Ups 2,” the studio had a few costly films that underperformed in 2013 including Channing Tatum and Foxx’s “White House Down” and a young adult adaptation of “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” Sony was banking to make a franchise.

All together, the studio made $3 billion at the box office last year.

While that sounds like a lot, out of the 7 big movie studios, Sony Pictures and Columbia came in fifth behind Warner Bros., Disney, Universal, and Fox. Top-earning studio Warner Bros. brought in $5 billion at theaters.

Among Sony's big releases this year are three sequels: "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," “22 Jump Street,” and “Think Like A Man Too” with Hollywood’s current hot star, Kevin Hart.

Sony is starting to rely heavily on its Spider-Man franchise to bring in money for the studio, recently confirming that spinoff films focusing on villains are in the works.

Currently, there is no reported budget for the "Annie" remake. With a planned December release, it's a while away from distribution. However, this early on, Sony may want to rethink the way the film is currently being marketed with less of a focus on Diaz and more of Wallis.

It’s hard to believe that “Sin City” came out back in 2005.

Nearly a decade later, Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez are back with a sequel to their gritty, black-and-white crime thriller, “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.”

Dimension just released the first trailer for the series adaptation.

Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis, and Mickey Rourke are set to return while Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Eva Green (“Casino Royale”) will join the cast.

“Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” is in theaters August 22.

The Young Star Of Huge New 'Divergent' Franchise Is A Hardcore Hippie

Shailene Woodley Miles Teller bare feet

Actress Shailene Woodley may be raking in up to half a million dollars for her role in the upcoming "Divergent" three-part franchise, but that doesn't mean the 22-year-old is living the high life.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Woodley revealed a side of herself that few have seen: hippie chick.

There have been clues along the way like when the actress wore barefoot running shoes to the Golden Globes after party in 2012 or attended "The Spectacular Now" premiere without shoes, wearing a Navajo pendant, and throwing out the "hang loose" hand sign [see right].

But we didn't quite realize the extent of Woodley's fur and diamond-shunning, mountain water-gathering, hug-happy, anti-Hollywood ways until she opened up to THR.

Here are a few of our favorite quotes.

Hugging:

  • Explaining why she hugs every reporter on a red carpet press line: "We've got a set amount of time in our lives, you know. You might as well make every conversation count. So that's like the hug. It's kind of like, 'Hey, I'm real. You're real. Let's connect.'"

Religion:

  • "My religion is the Earth, man. I believe in trees."
  • "I'm going to be a citizen of this planet, and I'm going to do my responsibility and live in stride with nature instead of constantly fighting against her."

Fashion:

  • "I exclusively buy used clothes."
  • "If I was to show up wearing my five-toe shoes, my Melodia organic leggings and some hippie top, no one is going to take me seriously ...When I go on a red carpet, I'm Shailene, but I'm also Shailene representing a movie. I'm there for my boss, for my employer, so part of that comes with wearing the uniform."
  • Although she has her limits, she refuses to wear fur or diamonds.
  • During the THR interview, Woodley was wearing a Navajo pendant. She explains of its significance: "It's my way of just recognizing spirit  as hippie as that may sound  in an industry where sometimes materialism is the main focus, it's kind of my way of grounding and remembering what's important to me."

Drinking Water:

  • "She totes around a glass Mason jar for drinking water because she doesn't want to expose herself or the planet to the estrogen-like chemicals used in plastics," notes THR.
  • When in Los Angeles, she lugs 5-gallon carboys up in the mountains to capture her own drinking water.

Traveling:

  • Woodley has no current home, but instead says, "I'm doing the vagabond lifestyle for a bit."
  • She just trekked to Costa Rica by herself before embarking on the "Divergent" press tour.

Friends and Lovers:

  • "I fall in love with human beings based on who they are, not based on what they do or what sex they are."
  • THR conducted part of Woodley's interview during the Sundance Film Festival. Writer Tatiana Siegel mused, "She and her two best friends — a long-haired brunette and a young man who looks like he just stumbled out of a Phish concert, her constant Sundance companions whom she declines to identify — forage for strange fruits in whatever city they visit ... I begin to get the impression that she might be romantically involved with her two friends, whom she says she met six years ago. Then again, maybe they simply share a passion for fruit-foraging and Wasatch Mountain road trips."

Shailene Woodley Laura Dern huggingHer Close Friendship with Laura Dern:

  • Woodley and Dern bonded on the "Fault in Our Stars" set. Dern delivered a spot-on impression of Woodley in a restaurant during their Pittsburgh shoot: "Shailene's like, 'God, great, I looked at your menu. It's so awesome. Hey, what kind of oil do you guys cook in? Oh, you do? Hmm, you never use beef fat from sustainable farms where it's grass-fed? Oh wow, you guys are open to that? Cool. Can we have a tour of your kitchen?' "
  • "People might think they're saving the planet, taking half steps," says Dern. "Shailene is taking it to such a different level."
  • Dern says the two have become so close that "There are times when I have called my house when out of town and found out that Shailene's over here making dinner with my children."

How She Dealt With Losing A Role To Dakota Fanning:

  • At age 9, Woodley was devastated after she lost out on the "I Am Sam" role to Dakota Fanning. She recalls: "My dad pulled me aside, and he said: 'Shai, what are you doing? You have so much anger, and you're feeling so let down by the fact that you didn't book [this]. I want you to close your eyes right now and picture this Dakota girl, and I want you to send her so much love and so much light because one day you're going to book something that you really want, and you're not going to want all of the girls around you that you competed against to feel anger against you. You're going to want them to support you on your journey. And so it's your turn right now to support Dakota on her journey.' And so I did that."

What's Next For Her?

  • "I might open a restaurant, and it's going to be like restaurant in the morning, dance club at night," says the self-described omnivore. "Who knows?"

Jennifer Lawrence may have her own schtick [tripping on red carpets] but the young actress has succesfully been able to lead the nearly billion-dollar "Hunger Games" franchise. When "Divergent" hits theaters March 21st, we'll see if hippie Shailene has the same star power.

I Spent More Than A Year Dressing As Hello Kitty In Times Square, And It Was Surreal

I am Hellok92

In 2012, after working as a photographer in Latin America for the better part of a decade, Joana Toro moved to New York to study English.

Toro soon found herself in need of extra money, which led her roommate Marcela to introduce her to the semi-legal world of Times Square street performers. She was captivated by the mostly immigrant performers, who make a living by dressing as iconic characters, posing for pictures with tourists, and asking for tips.

It was shocking at first to see Mickey Mouse did not speak English and was an immigrant from Mexico,” Toro told the New York Times. “ ... It was surreal. A paradox.”

Soon after her introduction, Toro took up her own costume. For a year and a half, she donned the cumbersome costume of Hello Kitty and saw firsthand a world that most people can't imagine.

Toro shared some photos from her experience, and you can see the rest at her website

Toro was first introduced to the world of costumed performers by her roommate Marcela, who dances salsa with a Barack Obama mannequin.

When Toro decided to become a costumed character, she first tried wearing a Minnie Mouse costume. She ended up also trying Mickey Mouse and Dora the Explorer, before settling on Hello Kitty.

She rented the costume from Berta, a Mexican immigrant. She warned Toro that the gig was hard work and not very lucrative.

Joel McHale and his "Community" co-star, Jim Rash, spoofed the often indecipherable banter between the two cops in a sketch on Thursday's "The Soup" on E!. And it's pretty good. Watch below:

Why Every ‘True Detective’ Theory You Have Is Wrong

$
0
0

true detective matthew mcconaughey woody harrelsonWarning: Potential spoilers ahead.

Like many, we've been hooked on HBO's new crime thriller "True Detective."

It has many of the elements of a great show — fantastic acting by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, an intriguing mystery, and singular stand-alone moments like the six-minute long take at episode four's end.

This Sunday is the series finale. Ahead of the show's conclusion, there have been a lot of bizarre theories going around on the identity of the killer.

Essentially, many believe the show will do a total 180 and reveal Marty or Rust to ultimately be the criminal.

Toss those theories aside.

In a recent interview with Buzzfeed, show creator Nic Pizzolatto made it very clear that’s not happening.

While Pizzolatto loves your enthusiasm, he points out the grave mistake many are making — including my colleague Nick.

“Buzzfeed: Let’s begin with the ending of Episode 7, when we see Errol, who is, or had better be, the Spaghetti Monster. How did you build to that moment, and why did you decide to end the episode on that note?

Pizzolatto: Going into the final episode, I wanted to end any audience theorizing that Cohle or Hart was the killer, and also provide a concrete face to the abstract evil they’re chasing. So, wild speculations aside, we showed the killer’s face in Episode 1.”

True Detective Matthew McConaughey Woody HarrelsonIn case you’re still not convinced, Pizzolatto outlines why he would never make either Cohle or Hart the villain — it’s just plain old bad writing.

The possibility is built into the story, as it has to be credible that the 2012 PD suspect Cohle. I just thought that such a revelation would be terrible, obvious writing. For me, the worst writing generally just 'flips' things: this person’s really a traitor; it was all a dream; etc. Nothing is so ruinous as a forced 'twist,' I think.”

So if the killer isn’t one of the two lead actors, it has to be Errol, the creepy lawnmower man at the end of episode 7, right? We've seen him previously in episode 3.

Pizzolatto even says, they showed "provide a concrete face to the abstract evil they’re chasing" in episode 7.

Seeems like it, but not so fast.

Look, the lawnmower man theory is good. It’s really good. I’ve seen and heard some pretty reasonable speculation from my colleague Nick on this. At this point, I'm certain he's in on it, but I’m positive we still haven’t seen the actual “Spaghetti Monster” yet, and I’m sticking to it.

There are three reasons I believe this.

Reason 1: Pizzolatto says they showed the killer's face in episode 1.

Of course, Pizzolatto could be figuratively speaking about a drawing, but Errol didn't show up until episode 3.

Reason 2: The scars just don’t add up.

We know the “Yellow King” has some wicked scars on his face. Well, Errol has some scars on his face.

lawnmower man true detective errol

true detective lawnmower man errolGreat. However, the three people who have identified the “Yellow King” have all looked absolutely mortified when speaking about him. Their eyes enlarge as if they’re remembering what he looks like and it’s absolutely terrifying. This isn’t a man who goes unnoticed in public like Errol the lawnmower man, right. This is someone with scars not only on the side of his face, but who should have them all along his chin. Maybe Errol received scars by the same man as the "Spaghetti Monster."

Reason 3. Look at the casting for the final episode.

DON’T READ AHEAD IF YOU DON’T WANT TO SEE ANY POTENTIAL SPOILERS.

A simple look at the actors who will appear on Sunday’s episode, “Form and Void,” show we’ll be introduced to a few people we’ve never seen before. While most of them have listed roles, there’s one that has no name.

Joshua Braud (Stash House Guy)
Bruce Elliott (Trustee-Levi)
Priscella Ford (News Reporter)
Randal Gonzalez (Detective)
Lyle R. Guidroz (VooDoo character/Mechanic/John)
Kurt Krause (Chad)
David Stephen Mitchell (Promise Keeper)
Jason Musco (State Trooper)
Eric Price (Detective Shinn)
John L. Armijo (Undercover Cop)
Joseph Fischer (n/a)

Take off the police officers and females and here's who you're left with:

Joshua Braud (Stash House Guy)
Bruce Elliott (Trustee-Levi)
Lyle R. Guidroz (VooDoo character/Mechanic/John)
David Stephen Mitchell (Promise Keeper)
Kurt Krause (Chad)
Joseph Fischer (n/a)

The first four sound like characters to get closer to the killer. While actor Glenn Fleshler makes another appearance as lawnmower man Eroll, I'm betting the guy Marty and Rust are after is either Chad or this nameless fellow.

How The New 'Divergent' Star's Salary Stacks Up Against Jennifer Lawrence's 'Hunger Games' Payday

$

Shailene Woodley Divergent

Lionsgate Studios is counting on 22-year-old actress Shailene Woodley to carry the huge, three-part "Divergent" film franchise based on Veronica Roth's best-selling trilogy set in a future dystopia.

Woodley was apparently the "first and only choice" for the role of Beatrice "Tris" Prior, and the studio was willing to shell out a $250,000 - $500,000 paycheck to get Woodley on-board for the first installment alone.

If all goes well at the box office after the film's March 21 opening  which it's on track to do Woodley will have the bargaining power to negotiate a much higher salary for the sequels.

23-year-old Jennifer Lawrence, for example, earned $500,000 for the first "Hunger Games," but after the film earned a whopping $691 million at the box office, she scored $10 million for the second installment, "Catching Fire." The Hollywood Reporter notes that the higher figure "is a combination of salary, bonuses and escalators."

hunger games catching fireProducer Alix Madigan, who has worked with both Lawrence and Woodley, tells THR, "Their career trajectories are similar in the sense of doing independent films and then going on to the YA franchise. I think Shailene certainly has the talent and the charisma and the inherent likability to follow in Jennifer's footsteps."

Similarly, Kristen Stewart, 23, also started her career in indie films such as "Into The Wild," but everything changed when she landed the role of Bella Swan in 2008's "Twilight."

After the initial film raked in nearly $393 million globally, Stewart was able to negotiate an unprecedented $25 million paycheck against 7.5% of the theatrical gross for the franchise's final two "Breaking Dawn" sequels.

According to E! Online, actress Emma Watson, also 23, played Hermione Granger in eight "Harry Potter" films from 2001 to 2011 and earned $15 million for both "Deathly Hallows" installments.

So if the "Divergent" readers translate into box office ticket sales as expected, Shailene Woodley should be able to negotiate a hefty paycheck for the second and third installments, "Insurgent" and "Allegiant," slated for release in March 2015 and March 2016.

This Is What It's Like To Go To The Oscars With Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence best friend oscars

Laura Simpson is Jennifer Lawrence's self-proclaimed BFF.

The two met seven years ago at an event where they both didn’t know a single person and hit it off over a mutual respect for "Friends" character, Chandler Bing.

"We've been eating pizza together ever since," says Simpson, who recently wrote a firsthand account of what it was like to attend the Oscars with her famous bestie.

But, as Simpson writes, going to the Academy Awards as a "nobody" isn't as fun as one may think.

"Unless you are famous at the Oscars, you are completely invisible," she says. "I have never experienced anything like it. The only time anyone talks to you is if you are in the way of his or her photo."

Things got off to a rocky start.

"We finally arrive at the red carpet and as we exit the car, my date eats s--- and uses my freshly done Lauren Conrad up do to break her fall. The crowd goes wild." [Simpson is the one in the black dress who Lawrence tried to take down with her.]

After Simpson quickly learned to move out of the way, she headed to the bathroom, where "Jessica Biel holds the door open for me and compliments my dress" and "Margot Robbie from 'Wolf of Wall Street' shows me her Kardashian-sized diamond ring in line for the toilet."

Soon, "the show begins and I am seated directly behind the camera's crane, so unless people are to either side of center stage, I can't see jack s---."

Simpson explains, "They mount two maybe 32" TVs on either side of the auditorium which are near impossible to see so basically everyone in the theater is just sitting in complete darkness during the categories."

And not only can attendees not really see what's going on, but they are also deprived food for the three-plus hours-long show.

Suddenly, says, Simpson, "you realize you are STARVING and haven't had any food since breakfast at 9 a.m."

So naturally, most head to the bar to fuel up on liquid calories.

Jennifer Lawrence best friend oscars"After waiting for my date's category, her dad and I decide to hit the bar and just watch from the monitor behind the bar and slam a few drinks to make this tolerable. The Academy really needs to spring for more hors d'oeuvres options because now everyone is hammered."

Luckily, thanks to host Ellen DeGeneres' pizza bit during the show, there is plenty of greasy 'za available backstage.

"My date comes out after her category and we decide to watch the rest of the show in the greenroom where there is pizza."

And then came the A-list celebrity sightings.

"After the show we go backstage where I meet Brad and Angelina. Brad Pitt smells amazing, like nothing I've ever smelled. Eventually we ask what cologne he's wearing and he tells us, 'I don't wear cologne, it's just my musk I guess.'"

When the show ends, the night of parties is just beginning.

"Everyone goes to Vanity Fair where, much like the Oscars, photographers yell at you and no one gives a s--- that you are a human being unless you're famous," complains Simpson. "We can't enjoy ourselves because everyone, whether they know my date or not, has some weird story they just NEED to tell her as they stand in front of me pushing me out of the circle. I get tired of this and decide to follow Bill Murray around the party. At one point he looks in my direction and winks at me while dancing to 'If You Want My Body and You Think I'm Sexy' by Rod Stewart."

Next up, "We head to Guy OSeary's party where there is no press and people can actually have a good time."

Around 3:30 a.m., the night concludes "with an earring/hair headache and major Barbie feet."

Overall, Simpson says, "The whole experience was completely exhausting, overwhelming and surreal. I think what I took most away from the evening was how lovely all the women were. Actresses tend to get a bad reputation but every woman I met was lovely, witty and introduced themselves to me even though I wasn't famous—even Anne Hathaway. And Kerry Washington, if your marriage doesn't work out… CALL ME."

But not everyone was as down to earth as the women of Hollywood.

Simpson says her award for "Most Hollywood" of the night goes to Harvey Weinstein for "shaking my hand at the bar and saying, 'you know who I am.'"

Rob Ford Hat Embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has given us all a very special Friday treat -- a photo of him wearing a tiny bowler hat.

Ford posted a picture of him and Toronto City Councillor Josh Matlow wearing props at an exhibit of costumes from the show "Downton Abbey" that's currently taking place at Toronto's Spadina Museum.

The picture shows Ford in the aforementioned tiny hat, carrying a cane, and wearing what looks like it might be the same suit and tie he wore when he appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" Monday night. Ford did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider about whether he wore the same suit and tie twice this week.

Stephen King 2

Rejection can feel devastating, but you shouldn't let it crush you. Some of the world's most successful people have failed — sometimes more than once.

We've put together a list of highly successful people, from movie stars to scientists, who experienced massive failure before they found fame and fortune.

Weaker people might have given up. Instead, these folks remained focused on their goals.

Scroll down to see the underdogs who went on to change the world.

Winston Churchill was estranged from his political party over ideological disagreements during the "wilderness years" of 1929 to 1939.

At the outbreak of World War II on Sep. 3, 1939, Churchill was appointed to the British Admiralty, thus ending his "exile." The next year, he was elected prime minister at the age of 62.

Thomas Edison's teachers told him he was "too stupid to learn anything."

Edison went on to hold more than 1,000 patents and invented some world-changing devices, like the phonograph, practical electrical lamp, and a movie camera.

Oprah Winfrey was fired from her first television job as an anchor in Baltimore, where she said she faced sexism and harassment.

But Winfrey rebounded and became the undisputed queen of television talk shows before amassing a media empire. Today she is worth an estimated $2.9 billion, according to Forbes.

There's No Way The '300' Sequel Will Do Better Than The Original This Weekend

300 rise of an empire eva green

"300: Rise of an Empire" is out this weekend, and there's no way it's going to pack a bigger punch than the original at theaters.

The (not-so) sequel to 2007's "300" is expected to take in $33-$40 million opening weekend. While it should command the box office over DreamWorks Animation's "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" flick, that's about less than half of "300" which took in $70.9 million.

The original Zack Snyder-directed film went on to make more than $456 million worldwide, costing an estimated $65 million to make.

"Rise of an Empire," produced and written by Snyder as his focus has shifted to the DC universe ("Man of Steel," the delayed Batman vs. Superman film) for Warner Bros., costs $100 million.

Why isn't the more costly "300" sequel going to do as well this weekend?

This shouldn't be much of a surprise.

It’s not a real sequel.

300 rise of an empireThis is more of a spinoff to “300" that takes place before, during, and after the first film.

A better way to describe the follow-up is as a movie that runs parallel to the original. Instead of picking up where we last left off, the film, based off of Frank Miller’s follow-up graphic novel “Xerxes,” shows Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) going up against Persian army led by Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and Artemisia (Eva Green).

Where's the star power?

300 rise of an empireClearly, this is not Sparta.

Gerard Butler, the star of the first film, will not be back in the sequel.

His "300" character became wildly popular inspiring a huge internet meme

The star of the first movie originally expressed interest in the film if the script and timing were right. He later told MTV News he wasn’t signing on for the sequel.

“I wish them the best, but it didn't [work out]. It wasn't really my thing.”

You can also count out Michael Fassbender. He's now an Oscar-nominated star.

Instead, Eva Green, starring as the tough-as-nails Artemisia, is the biggest name in this sequel. You'll remember her from 2006 James Bond film "Casino Royale." Joining her are a cast of widely unknown talent from Sullivan Stapleton ("Gangster Squad") and Rodrigo Santoro ("I Love You Phillip Morris"). Lena Headey reprise her role of Queen Gorgo but serves as a narrator to help keep viewers from getting confused.

The movie isn't being well-received by critics.

The problem? While its better than similar box-office duds "Hercules," and "Pompeii," it's not better than “300.”

Here's what a few top critics are saying about the movie:

LA Times:

The spectacularly brutal fighting is the film's main calling card, and in that ‘Rise of an Empire’ doesn't disappoint. Still, in the battle for best guilty pleasure, I'd give it to the Spartans of ‘300,’ by a head.”

The New York Times:

The naval collisions and melees play out in panel-like renderings that are bold and satisfying for the first half-hour but lack the momentum and bombastic je ne sais quoi of ‘300.’”

Variety

"This highly entertaining time-filler lacks the mythic resonances that made “300” feel like an instant classic, but works surprisingly well on its own terms."
