Niece Of Matthew McConaughey's High School Prom Date Tweets An Epic Throwback Picture After He Wins The Oscar

After Matthew McConaughey took home the award for Best Actor for his role in "Dallas Buyer's Club," a photo of him at his high school prom surfaced on Twitter.

“My aunt’s high school prom date just won an Oscar,” user Leah Pickett tweeted. “Congrats, Matthew McConaughey!”

The tweet quickly went viral, earning thousands of retweets within the hour it was posted.

McConaughey is 44, so if he was 18 at prom, then this photo was taken in 1988. We think the Oscar winner has aged wonderfully.

Why Oscar Winners Live Longer Than Losers

$

Oscar winners tend to be glamorous, successful, and celebrated. But the icing on the cake, University of Toronto epidemiologist Donald A. Redelmeier, is that winners also live an average of four years longer than mere nominees.

Before you feel bad for Oscar night losers, consider: This doesn't necessarily mean what you think it might.

Do winners live longer because they are basking in the healing glow of their statuette — or is it that actors who live more years will simply have more chances to win an Oscar.

The claim

In his 2001 study — which got plenty of press at the time — Redelmeier analyzed the lifespans of all the actors and actresses who had ever received an Academy Award or nomination. He also compared this group to 887 other actors and actresses, who matched up with the nominees according to age and sex and had appeared in the same films without being nominated.

The average life expectancy of the Oscar winners was about 80 years, compared to about 76 years among the runners-up and the controls. To put those extra four years in perspective: "The absolute difference in life expectancy," Redelmeier wrote, "is about equal to the societal consequence of curing all cancers in all people for all time."

That's no blip. The real question is whether winning an Oscar had anything to do with it.

Redelmeier pointed out that a large body of research equates higher status with longer lives, suggesting that this result, while striking, is just a logical extension of that conclusion. In other words, status differences matter not only between millionaires and the working class, but between the very successful and the very, very successful.

He hypothesized that winners would have more pressure to keep up appearances as well as more resources (money, personal trainers, chefs, etc.) than the nominees, prompting better self-care and, subsequently, longer lives. But he acknowledged that there could be underlying factors — things like resilience and social support — that contributed to both longer lives and better Oscar odds.

The blow back

While the narrative is pretty irresistible — Oscar winners get not only prestige and worldwide fame but years added to their lives! — epidemiological studies rarely give us such tidy results.

In a 2006 re-analysis of Redelmeier's data, James A. Hanley, a biostatician at McGill University, came to a totally different conclusion. The original paper, he argued, suffered from something called "immortal time bias."

In other words, Matthew Herper explained in Forbes, "those actors who live longer just have more time to win an Oscar." After all, Redelmeier observed, the mean age of Oscar winners (39) is higher than the mean age of nominees (35).

Hanley noted that a fair match-up would analyze not how long winners had lived since an arbitrary point (such as birth or turning 50), but how many additional years they had lived since winning. When Hanley did just that, he found the winners' longevity advantage vanished.

The upshot

As far back as 1843, British epidemiologist William Farr warned against analyzing people from birth as if they had been in certain categories all along. You could easily conclude, for example, that generals live longer than lieutenants — but that's probably because many lieutenants die before they have a chance to advance to the rank of general.

Similarly, another 2011 study argued, healthy people will have the chance to act in more movies, giving them more chances to win acting prizes. Oscar winners do live longer, the statisticians concluded, but "there is not strong evidence that winning an Oscar increases life expectancy."

So don't cry too hard for the losers — they just might be the winners the next time around.

Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres was worried about the celebrities in the audience Sunday night who would not have access to food throughout the three-plus hour show, so she decided to take action.

DeGeneres ordered pizzas for the star-studded audience.

After an actual delivery boy from Big Mama's & Papa's Pizzeria passed out slices to the Oscar nominees, DeGeneres joked, "I don't have any money, who here has money? Sandy [Bullock], you have a lot of money, you can tip him right? Where's Harvey Weinstein? No pressure just a billion people watching, whatever you feel is right."

Best Supporting Actor winner Jared Leto was one of few celebs to actually grab a greasy slice.

These Are The Brands Who Won At Last Night's Oscars

$
0
0

Paul Dorset_Lowe Campbell Ewald

Paul Dorset is a social media analyst at the advertising agency Lowe Campbell Ewald.

The Oscars are one of the most anticipated nights of the year and one of the last bastions of Appointment Television. Much like the Super Bowl or the Olympic opening ceremonies, marketers flock to social media to pounce on discussions and maximize their visibility.

Crafting a timely, pithy tweet is definitely a challenge, and here are some of last night’s best examples of real-time marketing.

NASA’s #RealGravity

One of the brands that unexpectedly stole the show early in the night was NASA. The Sandra Bullock drama Gravity was up for ten Oscars last night, and the government agency capitalized on that by showing off their own stunning photos of #RealGravity.

Early on, while other brands focused on the red carpet, NASA shared photos of spacewalks, POVs from space stations, and sunsets while orbiting the globe. It’s no surprise that these beautiful visuals received thousands of retweets and @NASA added over ten thousand followers, cracking the six million mark. It’s always fun to see a serious organization have such a playful voice in social media.

JCPenney’s #GoldenMoment

JCPenney has been on a viral hot streak lately. They convinced the world that someone was drunk-tweeting on their account during the Super Bowl (when in fact it was a clever ploy to promote their Olympic mittens.)

The retailer utilized Vine to give awards for the Best Supporting, Supporting Actor.  You know…the actors who portrayed a random doctor from Dallas Buyers Club or a salesgirl with minuscule screen time in Wolf of Wall Street.  JCPenney gave them their #GoldenMoment where they got to give a six second acceptance speech.

Ellen and Samsung Break Twitter

Ellen was easily the biggest star of the night both in-person and online. She started the night off taking a blurry selfie, which was retweeted over 100,000 times in ten minutes. Ellen then challenged the world to make a selfie of herself, surrounded by some of the most famous celebrities on Earth, the most retweeted photo in history.

While this interaction wasn’t exactly spontaneous (Samsung was a sponsor of the Oscars and arranged for Ellen to take those pics) the integration was seamless. The results couldn’t have been better for her or the electronics provider: the group shot quickly surpassed Obama’s 2012 re-election tweet which previously held the crown of most retweeted photo. For those of you keeping score at home, it’s at 2.6 million retweets and counting.

Ellen even tossed softballs to real-time marketers. When she asked the star-studded audience if they were hungry, brands like Pizza Hut, DiGiorno, and even Chobani, were tripping over themselves to suggest that they should be served at the Oscars. However the joke was on them: when Ellen finally brought out snacks to the starved A-listers, she went with a small North Hollywood pizza chain, Big Mama’s and Papa’s.

Pharrell’s Hat…again

Oreo set the bar high for real-time marketers during the Super Bowl blackout of 2013, but Arby’s shattered that glass ceiling by poking fun at Pharrell’s hat during this year's Grammys. In fact, that headgear made a triumphant return to social media fame as Pharrell performed his Oscar-nominated “Happy” in his now-signature lid. #PharrellsHat quickly became a trending topic.

While parody accounts were teasing Pharrell’s sartorial choices, eBay used its viral popularity to promote the hat’s sale to raise money for the charity One Hand to Another. Who ponied up the winning bid of $44,100? None other than Arby’s, of course.

FarmVille 2: Country Escape

It's been a crazy year for game-maker Zynga — it fired 15% of its workforce, and bought U.K.-based game company NaturalMotion in January — but it looks like the company is trying to turn things around.

Zynga will test and roll out new versions of its most iconic games: Words With Friends, Zynga Poker, and a new mobile version of FarmVille, called FarmVille 2: Country Escape. The three games will launch "soon" in select markets, and will be available worldwide in the coming months, Zynga's COO Clive Downie said in a blog post.

The apps will require a new download but will be backward compatible with players' history and current games, according to Re/code.

Words With Friends will introduce a sleeker interface, as well as a built-in dictionary with audio pronunciations, so you'll finally learn how to pronounce the big point-maker Qi.

The new Zynga Poker will have a new design, and it will automatically adapt to players' skill levels. It will also allow players to more easily connect with their friends.

FarmVille 2: Country Escape will feature a Connected Rewards system, that will tie together the Web-based and mobile-based versions of the game. The game will also allow players to play offline, without the need for an Internet connection.

Here's what the internal Words With Friends dictionary looks like:

Ellen DeGeneres broke Twitter records with her star-studded selfie at the Oscars last night. Her photo featuring Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, and Meryl Streep, among others became the first photo to be retweeted more than two million times.

But not everyone was excited about the retweet record. On-call engineers at Twitter seemed more than a little stressed out when the selfie went viral.

Twitter was so overloaded from Ellen's selfie that it briefly crashed around 10 p.m. EST. Service was back to normal after about 20 minutes.

According to one engineer, this group took shots every time Ellen mentioned Twitter during the broadcast.

Bill Murray and Harold Ramis were one of the great comedic teams, responsible for classic movies like "Caddyshack," "Ghostbusters," and "Groundhog Day."

However, the two stopped speaking after the production of "Groundhog Day," which led to a decade-long feud

But after Ramis passed away last week, Murray proved during the Oscars that it was all water under the bridge.

While presenting the award for Best Cinematography, Murray added to the end of the list of nominees, saying, “Oh, we forgot one. Harold Ramis for 'Caddyshack,' 'Ghostbusters,' and 'Groundhog Day.'”

Co-presenter Amy Adams and the rest of the crowd cheered after the remarks while Murray then apologized for taking away the focus from the actual nominees.

"Please forgive me, gentlemen," Murray said.

The award eventually went to the cinematography team from "Gravity," but the award for most surprising poignant moment at this year's Oscars went to Murray.

Matthew McConaughey Confirms He Won't Return For 'True Detective' Season 2

Despite critical acclaim and stellar ratings, Matthew McConaughey will not return for season 2 of "True Detective."

The actor, who is also an executive producer on the hit HBO series, confirmed the rumors Sunday night backstage at the Academy Awards after winning an Oscar for his role in "Dallas Buyer's Club."

"No, I won’t be back for season two. Season one was finite,” McConaughey revealed to reporters. “It’s probably airing right now. Has anyone seen it? I made the thing … and I’m not sure what happens.”

As for what drew him to the role in the first place, McConaughey previously told Rolling Stone:

"I loved the writing. I read the first two episodes, and I said, 'I'm in.' It's like Mark Hanna in 'Wolf of Wall Street' or Ron Woodroof in 'Dallas Buyers Club.' These are characters with clear obsessions, and that's what I've been choosing. Somebody where I could grab ahold of their obsessions and get drunk on them."

HBO has yet to officially confirm that "True Detective" has even been picked up for a second season, but show creator Nic Pizzolatto told Rolling Stone that he's already started writing.

"I've got three characters I love right now, and they're all unique, and neither of them is Cohle or Hart," Pizzolatto revealed.

Pizzolatto may have spilled the beans in a previous tweet he has since deleted, replying to one fan who requested a deeper look at the show's female characters with, "One of the detriments of only having two POV characters, both men (a structural necessity). Next season…"

But "True Detective" was conceived as an anthology show all along, with each season telling a unique story with a different locale and group of characters.

In the meantime, Twitter has done a good job of coming up with casting suggestions to replace McConaughey and his co-star, Woody Harrelson, with the trending hashtag #TrueDetectiveSeason2 offering funny actor pairings.

Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres caught a lot of heat Sunday night for using a Samsung Galaxy phone to take that infamous celebrity-filled selfie while using an iPhone backstage.

But according to a source familiar with the situation, Ellen was not a paid spokesperson for Samsung. Samsung only paid ABC as an Oscars sponsor, not Ellen individually.

Our source said when Ellen decided to take the selfie, Samsung gave her the phone to do it because it was already paying ABC to sponsor the event. Ellen is actually an iPhone user and wasn't obligated to use Samsung's Galaxy phone.

So there you have it, controversy over.

Rob Ford Claims He Was 'Set Up' By Jimmy Kimmel After Appearing On His Show

Crack smoking Toronto Mayor Rob Ford claims he was 'set up' by late night television host Jimmy Kimmel.

Ford traveled to Los Angeles to appear on Kimmel's show Monday night where he was mocked for his crack smoking scandal and videos showing his drunken behavior and public pratfalls.

"They have this video they've had it for a while have you had a chance to see it yet," Kimmel said of the infamous tape showing Ford smoking crack.

"I want the world to see this video I'd love to see it," Ford said.

"Me too I really do I really want to see it," replied Kimmel.

Kimmel also poked fun at Ford's outfit and teased the mayor for sweating profusely.

After the show, Ford apparently complained he was duped by Kimmel, who picked him up from the airport Saturday.

Prior to the trip, the Toronto Star spoke to Ford's brother, Toronto City Councilor Doug Ford, who said they believed Kimmel was too "classy" to discuss Ford's crack scandal. Afterwards, Councillor Ford, changed his tune in a phone interview with the Toronto Sun.

"He's a little upset," he said of his brother. "But he's O.K."

The Sun reported Ford could be heard in the background complaining he was "set up" by Kimmel.

Ford claimed his appearance was designed to promote Toronto's film industry. However, some of his critics back home described it as an embarrassment.

"This whole Kimmel thing, he's being absolutely ridiculous," City Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti said Monday.

While in L.A. Ford visited City Hall where two members of the City Council told the Star he made "brief unscheduled visits" to their offices. Ford did not respond to an email from Business Insider Monday asking about his plans for the L.A. visit and whether he intended to try one of the city's famous taco trucks. After Ford landed back in Toronto Monday night, one local reporter claimed he "triple faked" the media to avoid interviews at the airport.

12 years a slave

New York Magazine ran a piece Monday about how the New York Times covered the real life story of Oscar Best Picture winner “12 Years a Slave” in 1853.

The film is based on an account from Solomon Northup, who was kidnapped and put into slavery for more than a decade.

NY Mag published the entire account, which is only available if you’re a NYT subscriber.

Quickly someone noticed there was something off about the 1853 piece.

Take a look at a clip from the piece tweeted from NYMag to see if you can find the mistake:

The Times had two big spelling errors. Northup’s name was misspelled in both the title as Northrup and throughout the rest of the piece as Northrop.

The Times issued a correction 161 years later in today's edition after it was brought to the paper’s attention on Twitter.

Even NYMag made an oversight of the spelling, as Northup is currently referred to as Northrup on its site.

Pizza Chain Gets $10 Million In Free Publicity, Has Huge Sales Surge After Ellen's Oscars Bit

During Sunday's Academy Awards, show host Ellen DeGeneres took it upon herself to feed the A-list actors in attendance by ordering 10 large pizzas and passing them out throughout the star-studded crowd.

Ellen DeGeneres Oscars pizza jared letoAfter a call was placed to Big Mama's and Papa's pizzeria around 5pm, delivery guy Edgar had no idea he would be dragged into the audience to deliver pizza to Oscar nominees in front of 43 million viewers.

But the images of Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Jared Leto, and Brad Pitt chomping down on the greasy 'za proved to be the most incredible and priceless of advertising for the 20-location pizza chain in Southern California.

Brad Pitt Angelina Jolie eating pizza oscars 2014According to Variety, a 30-second commercial spot during the Oscars broadcast costs around $1.8 million,

Ellen spent about two whole minutes distributing the slices and then another minute collecting money, so TMZ estimates the free advertising for the pizzeria would total around $10.8 million.

The site points out that since the chain spent no money in actually producing a commercial, they pretty much received "the best ad deal in the history of television."

The pizzeria's franchise owner confirmed the free advertising has been paying off big time.

“I would say [sales increased] 300, or 400, or 500 percent,” Big Mama’s & Papa’s Pizza franchiser Aro Agakhanyan told TheWrap. “We got a lot of orders, a lot of online orders. We had over 60,000 visitors on our website in one hour; there were a lot of things happening.”

According to Agakhanyan, DeGeneres is “a regular customer” at the chain’s Burbank location, which is near her daytime talk show's studio — however, the delivery order for the Oscars telecast was placed Sunday at a different location closer to the Dolby Theatre.

“She just called over there — just made a pizza delivery order,” Agakhanyan recalled. “And then the person who took the delivery, actually, he is the franchisee of the location. It was so busy that he took the delivery himself.”

“He had no idea that he was walking to the front stage," Agakhanyan confirmed. "He was not aware of that.”
