Season 4 of "The Walking Dead" continues on AMC Sunday night.

Warning: There are spoilers ahead!

Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and a large group of survivors have been taking refuge in a prison since season 3.

Since there aren't many safe places left in the zombie apocalypse, The Governor (David Morrissey) returned with a new group to take over the prison ... with a tank.

The Word 'Satan' Played A Curious Role In The Rise Of Flappy Bird, The Mindless But Infuriating iPhone Game

flappy bird

How did Flappy Bird — the mindless but infuriating iPhone game in which players must guide a small bird through gaps in a set of pipes — rise to the top of the App Store so quickly?

According to a review by Myron Chiu at Sensor Tower, the game's reviews in the App Store contain some weird statistical anomalies. Most ominously, that the word "Satan" appears in the majority of the 1,200 or more reviews the game had received at the time the study sample was taken:

At the time of writing this article, 56% (704/1261) of all mentions of 'Satan' in the iOS app store are in Flappy Bird reviews. That seemed a little suspicious, so I took a closer look with our review analysis module.

What Chiu also found was that reviews for Flappy Bird were unusually long compared to those for the average app. And reviews contained certain key words or phrases that cropped up in multiple different reviews:

  • “evil genius"
  • "satan himself"
  • "i was browsing the app store"
  • "do not download this game"
  • "normal day"
  • "worst mistake"
  • "it all started"
  • "ruined my life"
  • "throw my [iphone/ipad]"

This chart shows how Flappy Bird reviews are on average much longer than other apps' reviews:

Flappy Bird

Chiu did the study to see whether it would produce any evidence that the author of Flappy Bird, Vietnamese indie game programmer Dong Nguyen, had in some way gamed the system to get Flappy to the top of the charts. No evidence emerged of that, although Chiu does speculate that some of his results look as if they were produced by a piece of spam malware that churns out automated fake reviews based on key phrases:

Someone has created a spintax system that is capable of creating a seemingly infinite combination of reasonably phrased, dire, and bleak stream of consciousness-esque reviews, ranging from simple phrases to 1000+ character stories.

It's all moot, of course. Nguyen has grown so frustrated at the overwhelming reaction to his game that he says he will withdraw it from the App Store.

The Trailer For HBO's New 'Silicon Valley' Comedy Looks ... Awful

Silicon Valley HBO noodles beard man dude

We love Mike Judge. He's the man who wrote and directed Office Space, possibly one of the best American comedies of all time and certainly the most brutally accurate dissection of work life in the 1990s ever committed to film. And, of course, he gave the world Beavis & Butt-Head, and King of the Hill, two of the most strikingly original and idiosyncratic animated comedies on TV.

So let's not judge the entirety of his new project, HBO's "Silicon Valley," on its teaser trailer. We should withhold judgment because the trailer makes the show look like garbage.

There's a huge amount of comedic inspiration to be gotten from Silicon Valley— hello, Greg Gopman! — so Judge doesn't lack for material. This, after all, is the industry where Flappy Bird is regarded as the pinnacle of creative success.

But the trailer seems to indicate that there won't be much of that in store. It begins with this framing device: "For thousands of years, guys like us have gotten the s--- kicked out of us." Basically, it's Revenge of the Nerds in San Francisco. All the stereotypes are there: The Zuckerberg one, the fat one with a beard, the Indian one.

The trailer ends with an extended dick joke.

We know Judge can do better than this.

Shia LaBeouf showed up to the premiere of new movie “Nymphomaniac” wearing a paper bag on his head with the words, “I am not famous anymore.”

The film — about a self-diagnosed sex-obsessed woman — is the first of two movies to be released this year from Lars von Trier starring the actor.

The “Transformers” star first used the phrase on Twitter after he was accused of and later apologized for plagiarizing a short film.

Earlier, the star stormed out of a press conference for the film after being asked a question about doing a movie with so many sex scenes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, LaBeouf responded with a 1995 quote from French soccer player Eric Cantona:

"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much."

Your Ultimate Guide To Streaming The Winter Olympics For Free

$
0
0

US Bobsled Sochi 2014

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi will begin Thursday at 8 p.m. Eastern. TV networks will host an incredible amount of coverage, but there will be options for viewers to stream events to smartphones, tablets, and PCs.

Here are the best choices:

NBC

NBC will offer a variety of platforms to stream from for customers. The only event that won't be available for your streaming pleasure is the opening ceremony.

Despite that, go to nbcolympics.com, which will post important video highlights from every major competition. NBC social media accounts like the official Facebook page will be constantly updated with news, information, and videos.

The network will offer two apps to stream the games. One of them is the NBC Sports Live Extra app. Once the Sochi games officially begin, the app will stream over 1,000 hours of content to smartphones and tablets. Download the app here for iPhone and Android.

The other option is NBC Olympic Highlights. This app will deliver scores, highlights, and other breaking news to you, but it's only available for Android. Download it here.

Unfortunately, these apps have one catch. You must have a cable subscription to be able to use it.

The BBC and CBC

The BBC will stream 650 hours of free Olympics content on its own website and Canada's primary TV network CBC will stream 12 feeds of live event coverage on its site.

Both networks have apps that you can watch the games on as well, but Forbes writes that viewers in the U.S. must use a virtual private network service to trick the servers into thinking you're in Canada or the U.K. The International Olympic Committee forced both networks to restrict streaming content in the U.S.

One way to get around that is Tunnelbear. The setup process is easy. Download the app, create an account, and designate the location of the content you want to view. For $5 a month, Tunnelbear will alter your IP address and let you access the streams in Canada and the U.K. It's available for iPhone, Android, and PC.

Here's one disclaimer for streaming the Sochi games with this method: The Forbes article warns U.S. viewers to be careful since this technically violates the terms of service for the BBC and CBC. There's always a chance you'll be blocked out.

The Hola App

Hola is another VPN service that's free and can bypass any Internet censorship. Internet users have deployed this tool in accessing streaming sites like Hulu that could be blocked in certain countries.

It could be a great tool to watch the opening ceremonies, but we won't know for sure until the event begins. The app is available for Google Chrome, Firefox, Android, iPhone and Windows.

Aereo

U.S. customers can sign up for Aereo, but there is one catch. This service streams live TV programming to smartphones, tablets, and computers. However, CNET writes some streams could be restricted since NBC, the main source of coverage for these games, is showing a majority of the Olympics through its cable channels. Aereo focuses on the main broadcast networks. That means you'll only be able to stream whatever the regular NBC channel has on.

It could be worth a shot for $8 a month. It's only available in select markets, but you can sign up for it here

Other options

FilmOn, a competitor to Aereo, offers 500 live streaming TV channels in multiple different languages. Customers can purchase a Slingbox too. This gadget streams shows to phones and tablets from your own cable subscription.

Also, one website that might work could be sidereel.com. Viewers could catch some streams that the broadcast networks may have missed.

‘The LEGO Movie’ Has Second Largest February Opening Weekend Ever

lego movie characters

As predicted, “The LEGO Movie” demolished the box office this weekend.

The Warner Bros.’ animated film brought in a huge $69.1 million.

That gives it the second-largest opening weekend in February behind 2004’s “The Passion of the Christ.”

Since final numbers won’t be available until later this afternoon, that figure should go up slightly.

The weekend’s other big release, “The Monuments Men” featuring an A-List cast of George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, and Cate Blanchett had a strong debut as well.

On the other hand, The Weinstein Company’s teen flick “Vampire Academy” fell flat.

“American Hustle,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and Lionsgate bomb “I, Frankenstein” bowed out of the top ten this week.

Here are this week’s winners and losers in Hollywood:

10. “Labor Day” featuring Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet rounds out the top ten with $3.2 million.

9. “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” fell three spots making $3.6 million. Though the latest movie in the Tom Clancy franchise hasn’t done too well domestically, it picked up overseas to bring in $114 million worldwide.

8. “The Nut Job” falls short of the other animated releases with $3.8 million. The Open Road Films movie has made $58 million and already has a sequel set in place.

7. “Vampire Academy” bombed this weekend making $4.1 million. One of the problems here was that there wasn’t anyone recognizable in the marketing. “Modern Family” actress Sarah Hyland is in the film, but I can’t recall seeing a trailer or one sheet poster that made her presence known.

6. “Lone Survivor” moves down one spot with $5.3 million. The Mark Wahlberg movie has now made $112.6 million at theaters. It hasn’t been released overseas.

5. Teen flicks haven’t been faring well at theaters. “That Awkward Moment” brings in another $5.5 million in week two. Good thing the movie only cost $8 million to produce. The Zac Efron movie has only made $16.8 million at theaters.

4. Disney’s “Frozen” falls two spots with $6.9 million this weekend. That was expected with another kid film out this weekend. However, the Disney flick kept a strong hold in week 12. The movie has now made $913 million worldwide and shows no signs of stopping.

3. “Ride Along” finally comes down from its 3-week reign at the box office making $9.4 million. Kevin Hart’s latest movie has done extremely well for Universal. It’s $107.7 million worldwide haul has made it the top earning movie for the year so far.

2. “The Monuments Men” performed in line with expectations taking in $22.7 million. The World War II movie directed, written, and starring George Clooney was delayed a few months, costing an estimated $70 million.

1. “The LEGO Movie” smashed all expectations this weekend with a huge $69.1 million haul. This time last week, analysts believed the film would have a $40 million weekend. By Friday, that number jumped $20 million. Warner Bros. already announced a sequel for the film which has brought in $87 million worldwide.

'Shark Tank' Reruns Are Saving CNBC's Ratings

Shark Tank

Last summer, viewership in CNBC's core demographic — the 25-54 year old crowd — disintegrated to a fresh 20-year low of 37,000.

With riveting financial crisis plot lines like AIG bonuses and Lehman's collapse way in the rear view, people wondered whether business TV journalism had officially lost its relevancy.

"Most of the financial sector's sharp edges have been sanded down, its eccentricities and peccadilloes ironed out by five years of regulation and magnifying-glass public scrutiny," wrote New York Magazine's Kevin Roose.

Well, all it took was some re-runs!

The New York Post's Andrea Morabito reports that CNBC's ratings have soared since the network started showing old seasons of "Shark Tank," where business owners pitch their products to investing "sharks" like Mark Cuban who then negotiate equity for cash.

The show has gained in popularity since its first season for ABC in 2009, according to the Post, and now it's right in CNBC's sweet spot. From the Post:

Airing Tuesdays from 8 p.m. to midnight, “Shark Tank” averaged 541,000 total viewers in January — more than any prime-time show on CNN that month, as several news reports gleefully pointed out.

It also appeals to a young audience, drawing 276,000 viewers (three times CNBC’s year-ago average) in the key advertising demo of adults 25-54, making it the No. 6 show in all of cable news.

As a result, a CNBC programming exec told the Post that other reality-based shows in the vein of "Shark Tank" are "in the pipeline or in production or pre-production."

Will Smith Will Not Be In The 'Independence Day' Sequel

will smith independence day

In case you didn't know, Fox is working on a sequel to 1996's "Independence Day."

However, don't expect to see Will Smith return as the lead.

Deadline reports Smith has officially turned down working on the film

This shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

Last summer, Emmerich told The New Daily News they wouldn’t be able to afford Smith because “he’s too expensive.”

Smith makes an estimated $20 million per film now.

How will the movie continue without Smith?

Apparently two versions of the film have been worked out in the event Smith couldn’t be a part of it.

Though Smith will be absent, other stars from the original including Randy Quaid, Bill Pullman, and Jeff Goldblum are expected to be in the sequel.

The first movie was a huge success for Fox, bringing in $817.4 million.

Roland Emmerich (“White House Down,” “The Day After Tomorrow”) will be returning to direct.

The "Independence Day" sequel is currently set for the July 4 weekend of 2016.

People Suspect That 'Dumb Starbucks' Is A Prank By Comedy Central Show 'Nathan For You'

A faux coffee shop called "Dumb Starbucks" is baffling people everywhere after popping up over the weekend in Los Angeles' Los Feliz.

The shop, and drinks served, are identical to the real Starbucks — except that the word "dumb" is in front of every menu item as well.

A Starbucks spokesman told the Wall Street Journal that the company has nothing to do with the new shop.

But one theory on Hacker News seems to be a pretty likely explanation. User evan_ writes:

I would bet money that this is a stunt for the Comedy Central show "Nathan For You", which is coming back for a second season soon and does all kinds of weird business-y stunts like this.

In the first season he got a gas station to offer gas at a steep discount, but only after rebate which you had to drop off in person at the top of a mountain:

It increased business because people came for the low price, but only a handful of people actually decided to try to redeem the rebate. Those who did try to redeem it had to camp out overnight and solve riddles.

On another episode Nathan tried to help a Haunted House to create buzz by getting someone to sue them for being too scary.

Making the argument even more compelling, Tim Heidecker, an executive producer of "Nathan For You," retweeted a picture posted by @DumbStarbucks — which currently has over 5,300 followers.

And Twitter seems to agree:

Nathan Fielder Dumb Starbucks tweets

"Nathan For You," a docu-reality comedy show, premiered on Comedy Central in 2013 and will "soon" be back for a second season.

According to IMDB, "In the show, Nathan Fielder uses his business degree to help real small businesses turn a profit. But because of his unorthodox approach, Nathan's genuine efforts to do good often draw real people into an experience far beyond what they signed up for."

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say former "Saturday Night Live" star Chris Kattan has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after his Mercedes struck a Department of Transportation vehicle on a Southern California freeway.

The California Highway Patrol says the Mercedes was seen weaving in and out of lanes shortly before 2 a.m. Monday on the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles.

The CHP says Kattan drove into a DOT vehicle that belonged to a crew conducting maintenance on a guardrail. No injuries are reported.

The 43-year-old Kattan was jailed on suspicion of DUI.

Kattan, who was on 'SNL' from 1996 to 2003, was best known for the character Mango.

He also starred alongside Will Ferrell in the 1998 film "A Night at the Roxbury."

BEIJING (AP) — China's box office hit a new record over the seven-day Chinese New Year holiday, according to figures released Monday.

There were more than 38 million visits to the cinema between Jan. 31 and Feb. 6 with a record box office of 1.41 billion yuan ($230 million), according to the official microblog of China Film News, which is overseen by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television.

That was an increase of about 85 percent over last year's take of 760 million yuan ($125 million), when there were 19 million trips to the movie theater, according to figures in state media.

The top two-grossing films during this year's holiday were both domestic ones and appealed to families during the holiday week. "The Monkey King," a 3D film loosely based on a classic Chinese folktale, grossed 618 million yuan ($101 million) and a reality TV show-turned-movie "Dad, Where Are We Going?" featuring celebrity fathers and their young children brought home 470 million yuan ($77 million).

The video shows a group of people-turned-zombies hiding under subway grates waiting to scare unsuspecting passersby.

According to local news outlet WPIX, the video is under investigation because the city didn't grant permission for the shoot.

“We are deeply troubled by this video,” said an MTA spokesperson. “We have forwarded it to the NYPD and are also conducting our own investigation.”

Police told The New York Post accessing subway grates and filming without permits "could result in charges of trespassing, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct."

Video clearly shows street grates were played with, though it's not clear what exactly was done.

TV's 'House' Held The Solution To A Real-Life Medical Mystery

$

hugh laurie dr house

In May 2012, a 55-year-old man arrived at a clinic at the University of Marburg in Germany with severe heart failure and a disturbing mix of ailments that had grown progressively worse.

His doctors were stumped.

Gina Kolata describes his symptoms in the New York Times:

He had low thyroid hormone levels, inflammation of his esophagus and fever of unknown origin. His loss of vision was so profound he was almost blind, and his loss of hearing so severe he was almost deaf. Most perilous of all, his heart had weakened so much it could not pump hard enough to supply blood to his body.

In a paper just published in the journal The Lancet, the Marburg doctors note that "his medical history was mostly uneventful, apart from the fact that he had had both hips replaced."

This observation would prove crucial, as would the doctors' media consumption.

The medical team was familiar with the TV show House, in which Hugh Laurie plays a Sherlock-type title character — a master of solving medical mysteries. (They have even used the show for teaching, they said.)

In unraveling the patient's strange web of symptoms, the German doctors remembered one episode in which the fake patient (played by Candice Bergen) had been poisoned by cobalt used in her hip replacement.

On a House-related hunch, the real-life doctors measured their patient's cobalt level. "It was a thousand times the level considered normal," Kolata reports.

What had happened? The man had had a ceramic hip before his metal one, and a doctor had left behind bits of ceramic that rubbed against the new metal joint.

Here you can see a visible hole in the metal prosthetic they removed from the man:

PIIS0140673614600374.gr1.lrgAfter the patient received a new ceramic hip and an implanted defibrillator, the poisoning subsided, his fever and esophageal problems went away, and his heart improved. Sadly, he did not significantly regain his vision or hearing.

Cobalt poisoning from hip replacements is not common, even with metal-on-metal artificial hips.

"The stability of cobalt" — when combined with other components used in artificial hips — "made this metal an excellent and stable compound in hip prosthetics," The Lancet doctors write.

"Literally tens of thousands of people had these hips without [such] problems," Larry A. Allen of the University of Colorado told The Times.

But when metal hips are placed incorrectly by surgeons or combined with ceramic hips, cobalt poisoning is a small risk. It's "an increasingly recognised and life-threatening problem," the Lancet paper concludes.

Samuel L. Jackson appeared on KTLA Monday to promote his upcoming film "Robocop"  but the live interview took a nose dive after entertainment reporter Sam Rubin asked the actor about "his" Super Bowl commercial.

The problem is that Jackson didn't star in a Super Bowl commercial this year fellow black actor Laurence Fishburne did.

"You're as crazy as the people on Twitter, I'm not Laurence Fishburne!" Jackson shouted. "We don’t all look alike! There’s more than one black guy doing a commercial!"

Jackson wouldn't let it go, asking Rubin, "You're the entertainment reporter for this station and you don't know the difference between me and Laurence Fishburne?"

When Rubin tried to redirect the interview back to Jackson's new film, the actor simply replied: "Really? Really?"

The Guy Who Plays 'Thor' Villain Loki Raced In The Pouring Rain In Last Night's 'Top Gear' Episode

The second episode in the new season of the BBC's "Top Gear" got a ratings boost on Sunday night, thanks in part to the appearance of Tom Hiddleston, better known as Loki, the villain/anti-hero of the Marvel films "The Avengers" and "Thor: The Dark World."

Hiddleston's was the guest for this week's installment of "Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car," and he had the bad luck to be racing a Vauxhall Astra Techline around the Top Gear track in the pouring rain.

Despite stalling the car right off the line on his first try, Hiddleston ran the lap in 1 minute, 49.9 seconds. That's faster than the time set a week earlier by Hugh Bonneville of "Downton Abbey" (also in the rain), and the same as Ron Howard, who didn't contend with wet weather.

According to The Mirror, this episode of Top Gear registered 5.5 million viewers, 200,000 more than last week's, the season premiere. The episode also featured Jeremy Clarkson driving on a Formula 1 circuit in the McLaren P1, a strong contender for best car on the planet. U.S. viewers can catch it on BBC America on Monday, February 17.
