Uber Will Deliver Cheerleaders And A Band To Your Door For A 'Halftime Show' In Honor Of The Super Bowl

49ers cheerleaders

Uber strikes again.

In the last year, the popular on-demand car service has delivered its users both kittens and Christmas trees, and today it wants to send you a team ofcheerleaders and a band.

If you live or work in Manhattan, you can celebrate the Super Bowl early with Uber's "Get Hyped For Halftime" stunt, which will allow you to order a free performance by a six person band and a team of six cheerleaders today and tomorrow between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Uber will only be delivering its private party to users in Manhattan south of 57th Street (excluding Times Square because of road closures).

Be warned though: Supply will be just as limited as when Uber had its massive kitten shortage in October.

The company warns on its blog, "Demand for halftime shows will be very high and availability very limited. It may take multiple tries to get a halftime show. Please be patient. We’ll be working all Tuesday and Wednesday to bring you a piece of the game day action!"

Let's be honest, if you're able to book yourself some cheerleaders, this personal performance will probably be much better than whatever Bruno Mars has in store on Sunday.

Winter X Games Ayana Onozuka ski

This weekend marked the 18th annual Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado.

While fans came out to see halfpipe snowboarder Kelly Clark win four medals and Snowmobile SnoCross champion Tucker Hibbert earn his first seven-peat in winter XG history, many people trekked to the small mountain town for the incredible music that accompanies the games.

On Saturday, band Matt & Kim kicked off a night of concerts, making it the only show they’ll play this winter and their sole performance scheduled for 2014. The mountains made for a beautiful backdrop.

Matt & Kim opened for popular French band Phoenix, who played an hour-long set to a crowd of 3,500 people outside in a local park.

Phoenix played again later Saturday night at a more intimate, popular Aspen venue called BellyUp.Phoenix concert

On Sunday, Tiesto took the outdoor stage and performed an 80-minute sundown DJ set that included two video screens and an intricate light show for a crowd of 4,400, reports the Aspen Daily NewsTiesto DJ Mountains

Tiesto, too, played again later Sunday night at Belly Up.

Savoy and "Safe and Sound" crooners Capital Cities also played during the X Games weekend.

“It was a little bit of an experiment for all of us and it worked,” said Aspen Mayor Steve Skadron of the weekend during a debrief meeting Monday with city staff. “I thought it went really well — as good as it possibly could have.”

Good news, considering ESPN and the Aspen Skiing Company just announced a five-year extension that will keep the event in Aspen through 2019.

Universal Is Dominating The Box Office Right Now With Two Big Films

$

kevin hart ride along ice cube

It's no secret January is a slow month at theaters.

Usually, its the month for a few horror flicks to debut ("Paranormal Activity," "Devil's Due"), and there's always at least one mega bomb ("I, Frankenstein").

Despite that, Universal's been defying the odds with two break-out hits.

Here's a look at the past two box-office weekends. Take a look at the top two spots.

Weekend of 1/17/14:box office

Weekend of 1/24/14:box office weekend

With no real competition at the box office (sure, there's Disney's strong horse "Frozen" which is nearing $1 billion), "Ride Along" and "Lone Survivor" have been able to take serious advantage at theaters.

"Ride Along" features Kevin Hart as a security guard who goes on a 24-hour-patrol with his cop brother-in-law (Ice Cube). The film may not have been received well by critics; however, audience reception is great and the film has made $75.5 million since its release less than two weeks ago. It cost an estimated $25 million to produce.

ride along kevin hartThe movie comes from Tim Story, the same man who directed 2012's box-office breakout "Think Like a Man." Don't remember the film? It stopped the four-week run of "The Hunger Games" atop the box office upon its April debut.

However, the main star power here is Kevin Hart, who's becoming a huge star fast.

Forget his role in Warner Bros.' "Grudge Match" at the end of last year. After "Think Like A Man," and the comedian's successful stand-up film "Let Me Explain," Hart will flood theaters with a few movies this year — "Think Like A Man Too" and "About Last Night." He's definitely someone to keep your eye on this year.

Right now, "Ride Along" currently holds the highest-grossing opening weekend for the year at $41.5 million and may continue to hold that record for a while even with the "RoboCop" reboot coming up in a fortnight. Estimates for the Sony/Columbia Pictures flick are currently placing the film around a $25 million opening

Universal's other gem of the moment, "Lone Survivor" is based on a true story following four NAVY SEALs during a mission in Afghanistan.

lone survivor mark wahlbergStarring Mark Wahlberg, the film nearly debuted bigger than "Ride Along" at $37.8 million when the film had its wide release. The movie has continued to have great word of mouth and will soon cross the $100 million mark.

That's good news for the studio after a disappointing blow with "47 Ronin" at the end of last year — the costly $175 million+ Keanu Reeves' samurai picture brought in $121 million worldwide.

With a teen flick out this weekend, Focus Features' "That Awkward Moment" starring Zac Efron and Michael B. Jordan ("Fruitvale Station"), it should be another good weekend for the two Universal flicks. However, it will also face some competition from the re-release of "Gravity" in 3-D and IMAX and a sing-along version of "Frozen."

Disney Channel Introduces First Lesbian Couple On Popular Kids' Show

lesbians on disneyThe Disney Channel introduced its first-ever lesbian couple on the family series "Good Luck Charlie" on Sunday.

In the groundbreaking episode, parents Amy and Bob Duncan set up a playdate for their preschool-age daughter, Charlie, and one of her new friends who, it turns out, has two mothers.

A spokesperson for the network said the episode was “developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.”

When Miley Cyrus got wind of the news, the former "Hannah Montana" Disney star tweeted: "I commend Disney for making this step into the light of this generation. They control…so much of what kids think! Life isn't bright sets & wardrobe & kids becoming superstars! This is INSPIRING."

But not everyone is happy about the show's new plot line.

Conservative group One Million Moms, which tried to get Ellen DeGeneres fired as JC Penney’s spokeswoman, urged parents to boycott the show because of the content.

The organization posted on its website, “Just because something may be legal or because some are choosing a lifestyle doesn’t make it morally correct. Disney should stick to entertaining instead of pushing an agenda. Disney decided to be politically correct versus providing family-friendly programming.”

“Families tuning in to watch a children’s network may encounter a premature discussion on sexual orientation that is completely uncalled for,” added the group.

Have You Heard Of Us

YouTube has always been filled with covers of songs. In fact, there are a few household celebrity names we know today who got their start on YouTube (like Justin Bieber).

Then there's Vine, which only allows you to cap a measly 7 seconds of footage before it goes into a looping stream. It may not seem like the most obvious platform for budding musicians to showcase their work.

But it worked for the Alvarados, who go by UsTheDuo on Vine.

Michael and Carrisa Alvarado have amassed over 1.5 million followers on Vine, where they post 7-second clips of a cappella versions of songs we all know.

They even came out with a full album in November. You can see their site and album here and on iTunes.

Vin Diesel Says 'Riddick' Sequel Is In The Works

vin diesel facebook

We know Vin Diesel loves announcing news to his fans first via Facebook.

In a lengthy seven-and-a-half-minute video, he told fans on the social media network another "Riddick" movie is in the works.

You wouldn't know Diesel was making a big announcement from the start of the video. The first three-minutes involves the "Fast and the Furious" actor dancing and lip-syncing to Katy Perry's "Dark Horse."

Around the 3:12 mark Diesel makes a pretty big announcement about an impending sequel to last year's "Riddick" after thanking fans for their support to bring the third film in the series to screen.

"Universal just called me and told me that 'Riddick is number one on the DVD charts. There's no way in the world 'Riddick' would have been made without you guys. You know that. You guys have been a part of our page since 2012 and remember how arduous a road it was for us to actually get the movie made, and to make it rated 'R,' and to do it with such a low budget. It's a win for all of us and I really, really, really, really thank you guys so much. Yeah, I'm excited, and of course, Universal's also saying they want to develop the next one."

Last year's "Riddick" made $98 million worldwide and was made on a $38 million budget.

The first film in the series, "Pitch Black," came out in 2000. Reception for that film was great as it more than doubled its $23 million budget at theaters ($53 million). The second film in the series, "The Chronicles of Riddick," (made on a wide scale budget of $105 million) came out in 2004 and wasn't a huge blockbuster making $115.8 million.

Diesel's video continues with him making a mention of how he couldn't go to the Grammys because he's working on "Fast and the Furious 7."

Watch the announcement and Diesel's dance moves below.

13 Movies You Need To See From The Sundance Film Festival

$

babadook sundance

Seems like just twelve days ago that Kate Erbland and I posted a list of our most anticipated films playing at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Our choices were based on elements as diverse as cast, premise, the filmmaker’s previous work, and even the two-word concept of an “abortion comedy.”

As is always the case, though, expectations are never fully met, and while some movies we expected to love ended up disappointing us others that weren’t even on our radar completely blew us away.

That, in a lanyard-wearing nutshell, is the beauty of film festivals. Unlike movies that open at your local cineplex or release onto Blu-ray and DVD each week, the majority of festival titles are unknown entities. There are no trailers or other marketing materials for these films, and the talent involved are often barely familiar faces at best. Most of the screenings are complete crapshoots, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

This year’s Sundance was one of the most rewarding film festivals I’ve attended in regard to quality, and it’s evident in the high number of films already picked up for distribution. It’s telling that I had to exclude great and/or highly entertaining movies like Dear White PeopleCootiesKumiko the Treasure Hunter, and The Battered Bastards of Baseball to narrow down my list below. Keep reading to see Kate’s and my top fourteen films of Sundance 2014.

"The Babadook"

A single mother and her young son square off against the monster haunting the boy’s dreams. Like the best horror films, this Australian chiller ties its terrors into a very human story.

Even more impressive, writer/director Jennifer Kent‘s feature debut would be just as frightening with the supernatural elements removed. (My review) – Rob Hunter

"Boyhood"

Richard Linklater‘s long-in-the-making look at the adolescence of one boy (Ellar Coltrane) is both bold (it was filmed over twelve years) and suitably lo-fi (it’s really just a great coming-of-age story).

It’s one of the most satisfying in-theater experiences I’ve had in years, and it shows that gimmicks can still work to great effect. - Kate Erbland

"Blind"

A woman who recently lost her sight tries to make sense of her condition by imagining the world and people around her.

Writer/director Eskil Vogt co-wrote the emotionally devastating yet intensely life-affirming Oslo August 31st, so it comes as no surprise that his directorial debut is such an affecting, creative, and beautiful film. (My review) - Rob Hunter

Fans Can Try Out The Oculus Rift At A 'Game Of Thrones' Exhibit In NYC

We've talked about the Oculus Rift a fewtimes here.

It's a virtual reality headset that puts you inside a game world.

While checking out a "Game of Thrones" exhibit in New York City Tuesday morning, we were surprised to find several of the devices set up for passersby to try out.

oculus rift game of thronesgame of thrones oculus

For fans of the show, you're put into a wooden elevator box where you'll be able to "climb" the white wall that Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and a few other characters scale in season 3.

white wall game of thronesIf you're hoping for a similar adventure to the one seen in the show, don't get too excited.

Fans ride up a virtual elevator to the top of the cliff and then descend — slightly faster — down. (If only it were that easy on the show.) If you're a theme park enthusiast, it's a lesser equivalent of a drop ride that takes you up into the sky before releasing you.

You may not be ultimately blown away — this was our tamest experience with the headset— but if you haven't had a chance to try out the future of gaming, it's pretty cool since you can do a full 360 view of your surroundings and look up and down.

The Oculus Rift experience is part of a larger "Game of Thrones" (GoT) exhibit that's part of a 90-minute studio tour being held by Time Warner Cable this week in the Meatpacking District of New York City.

Other than getting the chance to sit on the Iron Throne, it's by far the most fun part of the studio tour.

The exhibit is open throughout the week from 1/27-2/1 for Time Warner Cable customers.

It's being held at 440 W. 14th Street off the Highline.

You can get free tickets for the event here.

Meanwhile, the "Game of Thrones" exhibit is currently traveling the world before the series' fourth season return on HBO.

One Of The Geniuses Behind Candy Crush Explains Why Some Levels Are So Tough To Beat

$

sebastian knutsson chief creative officer and co-founder at king

All eyes have lately been on King.com, the game-maker that delayed its IPO because Candy Crush Saga has been "too successful."

But before Candy Crush Saga became a massive hit on both Facebook and mobile devices, King.com had a few duds, King chief creative officer Sebastian Knutsson tells Business Insider.

Candy Crush Saga, Knutsson says, is essentially the result of the best elements from its most successful match-three games.

Bubble Saga, which launched at the end of the first quarter of 2011, was King's first big hit on Facebook.

"That’s when we rebuilt and moved to mobile," Knutsson says. "We invested in how to make games work cross-platform."

As Candy Crush Saga players are used to, Bubble Saga also had strong visuals and the deep voice that tells you when you're doing well in the game.

"The first iteration had more of a humorous French accent, but the players hated that," Knutsson says. "So we changed it to a more classic voice. The current voice works much better."

Still, a lot of what King does in Candy Crush Saga, Knutsson says, it has not done before. Take the Dreamworld as an example.

Back in December, King launched its first major extension of Candy Crush Saga. Any player who makes it past level 50 can access the new Dreamworld area by tapping Odus the Owl on the game map.

"It was like a Christmas gift for our players," Knutsson says. "The majority of players are stuck at certain levels. Depending on where they are, they might feel frustrated. With Dreamworld, you can replay levels you've already beat and get rewarded with more content."

Speaking of being stuck on levels, some are much harder than others. Level 110 is a notoriously hard level, but level 111 is a breeze. That might seem a tad strange, but it turns out there's a reason for that.

"If the game becomes harder and harder forever, it will become unplayable," Knutsson says. "The test of that is making it for the players who complete game. The majority of players at end of the game have never paid. We never want to design a level that’s unbeatable or that you would have to pay to complete. That’s not our goal. Finding that mixture of pleasure and pain is the goal behind level design."

Another feature, depending on how you look at it, is getting locked out of the game when you run out of lives.

"A lot of players like it that you can’t play forever," Knutsson says. "It gives you an actual break, which is good long-term because you don’t get tired of the game. It gives you a natural pause."

Candy Crush Saga is King's most popular game, and it has been downloaded 500 million times. Since it launched in 2012, people have played over 150 billion games of Candy Crush Saga.

King's two most popular games are match-three, Knutsson says, but it wants to eventually evolve its network of games. Regarding an IPO, Knutsson has no comment.

President Obama dropped a great "Mad Men" reference during Tuesday night's State of the Union Address.

While discussing gender income inequality, the POTUS stated:

"Today, women make up about half our workforce. But they still make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. That is wrong, and in 2014, it's an embarrassment. A woman deserves equal pay for equal work ... It's time to do away with workplace policies that belong in a Mad Men episode."

The minute the "Mad Men" remark was made, the Internet went nuts, with it generating close to 34,000 tweets per minute and becoming the most-tweeted moment of the night.

"Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner subsequently released a statement following the State of the Union:

"I support the president, and I'm honored that our show is part of a much-needed national conversation," Weiner said, according to a tweet from New York Times reporter Dave Itzkoff.

"Mad Men" returns to AMC for its seventh and final season on Sunday, April 13.

In the meantime, watch Obama get "Mad" below:

President Obama delivered his State of the Union address Tuesday night, but prankster Jimmy Kimmel took the opportunity to interview people on the street before the speech asking what they thought of it.

"I think most people pretend to care about this thing but actually don't," offered Kimmel while introducing his latest "Lie Witness News" segment. "We asked people what they thought of Obama's speech, but of course there's no way they could have seen the speech ... because it hadn't happened yet."

But that didn't stop people from weighing in, calling the speech "awesome" and describing hilarious details.

Chris Hemsworth isn't the only one capable of wielding Thor's mythical war hammer, Mjölnir.

Before he played villain Loki, Tom Hiddleston was close to playing the Asgardian God of Thunder himself.

When he was cast in the film, Hiddleston originally signed a contract to play either Loki or Thor.

Footage of Hiddleston's original audition tape to play Thor will be featured on the DVD and Blu-Ray for "Thor: The Dark World" when its out February 25.

A sneak peek from the discs has already made its way online via SuperHeroHype in the form of two GIFs.

Tom Hiddelson Thor AuditionTom Hiddleson Thor Audition

Even though the role ultimately went to Hemsworth, Hiddleston told Chelsea Handler back in November he enjoyed the audition process and had a feeling he was more fit to play the anti-hero.

"I auditioned and I swung the hammer but they were always looking for Loki as well," said Hiddleston. "I think the closer I got, they were like, 'You should play the bad guy.'"

Ultimately, Marvel made the right choice in casting Hiddleston as Loki considering that he has gone on to become a fan favorite

That being said, it's fun to think of what kind of mischievous Thor he could have made.

IMAX offers an enhanced viewing experience for movie-goers, adding a premium to the existing ticket price.

The company's reputation grew based on massive screens and state-of-the-art sound systems. IMAX currently retrofits existing movie theaters with technology that enhances the picture resolution and the sound quality.

However, many of the retrofitted screens pale in comparison to the size of other IMAX screens. Yet the company charges the same premium on top of the ticket price, regardless of the screen size.

IMAX doesn't deny the discrepancy. When we talked to IMAX Entertainment CEO Greg Foster, he said: "If there are people out there who have a problem with it, they're not telling us."
