There's A New Documentary On The Tragic Story Of Reddit Co-founder Aaron Swartz

Aaron Swartz

The Sundance Film Festival next week will premiere a new documentary about Aaron Swartz called "The Internet's Own Boy."

The 26-year-old killed himself in New York City on January 11, 2013, a year ago Saturday.

The movie was funded in part by a Kickstarter campaign, raising over $93,000.

Swartz's life story is amazing and heartbreaking.

He was an Internet activist that helped found news-sharing site Reddit.

The movie delves into how he organized the tech industry to fight a bill in Congress called SOPA. SOPA was supposed to stop people from sharing copyrighted material online illegally, but Internet advocates like Swartz feared that it gave the government too much power to shut down websites.

Separate from SOPA, Swartz was embroiled in a legal battle in which a prosecutor was threatening him with decades in prison for downloading millions of documents from an online site called JSTOR. JSTOR hosts journals of academic research.

Harvard law professor and activist Lawrence Lessig said Swartz was shamefully bullied by the government in JSTOR case.

Swartz died five months before Edward Snowden would begin leaking documents about government surveillance, sparking an international debate.

The new trailer is intended to drum up support for a day of activism to fight government surveillance, using some of the same tactics the anti-SOPA folks used to stop that bill.

February 11 has been dubbed The Day We Fight Back Against Mass Surveillance. It's asking people to post protest signs on websites and on Facebook and do other things to ask the government to knock it off.

Here's the trailer of the Swartz movie.

Friday, we found out that "Breaking Bad" and "Friday Night Lights" star Jesse Plemons is in talks for a lead role in the new "Star Wars" film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a bunch of actors have tried out for the film and have met with director J.J. Abrams.

That's not much of a surprise.

Back in October, "Lovely Bones" actress Saorise Ronan admitted "everyone" has been auditioning for a part in the sequel while trying out for the film herself.

She wouldn't name names, but thanks to THR we now know some of the actors.

Here are some of the A-Listers who have been meeting up with J.J. Abrams.

It's a very wide range of talent.

Michael Fassbender ("X-Men: Days of Future Past")
Adam Driver ("Girls")
Hugo Weaving ("The Matrix")
Benedict Cumberbatch ("Sherlock," "Star Trek Into Darkness")

These names join others including Michael B. Jordan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jack O'Connell, Alex Pettyfer, and Sullivan Stapleton

The meetup which so much talent could be because of a major change behind the scenes.

In the fall, Michael Arndt ("Toy Story 3," "Little Miss Sunshine") left as a screenwriter on the project after a reported difference in opinion on where the story should go.

According to THR, Arndt wanted the story to follow Luke Skywalker, Leia and Han Solo's children while J.J. Abrams wants the focus to still be on the original trio before handing off future films to their kids.

Word is that Abrams is now looking for more older shoes to fill cast as opposed to a necessarily younger crop that was being considered earlier.

Yikes! The New Xbox One Ad Shows Some Scary Hallucinations (MSFT)

You know your video game is good when you start hallucinating. That's the scary premise of the latest ad for Microsoft's new video game console, the Xbox One.

The ad made us jump more than once when we first spotted it on Forbes. It's part of an awesome series of ads portraying Xbox One games as being so engrossing, your mind will think they are real.

Probably, if you get to the point of hallucinating, you need to lay off the games for a while. But short of that, this does looks like fun.

Michael Douglas Will Star In 'Ant-Man' Opposite Paul Rudd

michael douglas golden globes

Whoa. HUGE Marvel news.

Variety is reporting that Michael Douglas has been cast in the upcoming "Ant-Man" movie.*

What's more surprising is the character he's being said to play: Hank Pym.

The reason this comes as a bit of a surprise to fans is because Paul Rudd was just cast as the lead in Ant-Man a few weeks back.

Typically, Ant-Man (Rudd) goes by scientist Hank Pym. So everyone (including us) naturally assumed Rudd would play Pym. (Confusing, right?)

Last week, it was thought that there would be two versions of the character introduced to the big screen.

Comicbookmovie.com noticed "Ant-Man" director Edgar Wright posted an image on his official website teasing an image of the superhero with the word, "Homework." They reported the image was from season 2, episode five of "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" called "To Steal an Ant-Man." (Boy, they really know their cartoons.)

What you need to know about that episode is that it's the introduction of Scott Lang as Ant-Man.

So it looks like Rudd's Ant-Man will be Lang, not Pym.

What do you need to know about Scott Lang?

He finds out Hank Pym is Ant-Man and steals the suit for himself to start robbing banks to save his sick daughter.

In addition to eventually working with "The Avengers," Lang also works with the "Fantastic Four" in the comics.

What about Michael Douglas' Hank Pym?

We're guessing he'll start off as Ant-Man — perhaps an aged one who is hanging up his mantle. After tracking down Lang, Pym may serve as a mentor to Rudd's character.

However, this also leaves open room for Pym — a scientist — to become one of the character's other aliases, Giant-Man, Goliath, or even Yellowjacket.

"Ant-Man" is set for a July 31, 2015 release.

*Note: Variety originally reported Douglas was cast as a villain in the film, which has now been retracted.

Ellen DeGeneres Reportedly Spent $40 Million On An Estate Next Door To LA's Playboy Mansion

Ellen DeGeneres, famous for her house-hopping as much as her status as America's nicest funny woman, reportedly laid down $40 million for a 9-bedroom mansion in the exclusive Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to TMZ.

Sitting on 2.25 acres next to the Playboy Mansion, the property was commissioned by philanthropists Sidney and Frances Lasker Brody in 1949. The home was impressive in its own right (TMZ calls it "the best house in L.A.), but its unnamed second owner had it renovated in 2010, ostensibly to flip it..

Designer Stephen Stone increased the size of the kitchen, turned the top floor into a second master suite with a study, updated the pool, and added a koi pond. But he did keep the landscaping intact along with some original parts of the house.

Unfortunately, we only have photos of what the home looked like pre-renovation, since it never officially hit the real estate market. But even so, they are pretty remarkable:

A retired Florida police officer allegedly opened fire on a couple in a movie theater after a dispute over texting during the war movie "Lone Survivor," CNN reports.

The former cop, 71-year-old Curtis Reeves, is being charged with second-degree murder for the death of Chad Oulson whose wife, Nicole, was also injured. Reeves, who was with his wife, was upset by Chad Oulson's cellphone use during the movie, a witness named Charles Cummings told reporters.

The men reportedly began to argue, and Oulson, 42, insisted he was just calling his daughter.

"Their voices started going up. There seemed to almost be a confrontation," Cummings told reporters. "Somebody throws popcorn; I'm not sure who threw it. And then bang, he was shot."

It doesn't appear the couples knew each other, according to CNN. An off-duty cop reportedly restrained Reeves until help arrived. WFLA.com reports that Reeves was a captain when he retired from the Tampa Police Department in 1993.

"He was instrumental in establishing the department's first Tactical Response Team," the police department said in a news release cited by WFLA. A spokeswoman said she didn't think Reeves had had any contact with the police department since his retirement.

This Indie Game Makes You Reconsider Putting Your Career Ahead Of Your Family

the novelist

While blockbuster titles like "Call of Duty" and "Grand Theft Auto" get all the press, the rise of relatively open software stores on PCs, consoles, tablets, and smartphones has allowed for a major increase in the viability of games made by smaller, independent developers.

Developers like Kent Hudson. Last month, Hudson released "The Novelist," his first game as an indie game designer. Business Insider sat down with Hudson to discuss the game at length.

"The Novelist" doesn't have the big action set pieces or cinematic cutscenes used to tell stories in most games. Instead, the player drives the story directly through gameplay.

The game puts players in control of a nigh-invisible, "Paranormal Activity"-like entity (see: character above) haunting a house on the coast of Oregon. As the game begins, a novelist and his wife and son move into the home for the summer.

The novelist, Dan Kaplan, is struggling to complete his second book. Meanwhile, his marriage is going through a rough patch and his son is having trouble in school, both socially and with his work. Basically, it's not a good time for the Kaplan family.

Of course, none of this is told to the player outright. Instead, the player has to sneak up on the Kaplans to "uncover memories" via possession and find clues laid around the house. Letters to and from family, diary entries, and the son's crayon drawings slowly reveal what each of the family members are thinking about and what they want in life.

the novelist game haunting

Things get interesting when you know what each character really wants. That's because the player can influence the Kaplans' lives by telling Dan what do to while he sleeps. The only problem: you can't make everyone happy in every situation.

In fact, the game only lets players make one character happy in any given situation. Whether it's giving Dan time to work on his book, taking the Kaplans' son to an amusement park or going for a hike on a trail Dan's wife picked out, the options available to the player are almost all mutually exclusive.

If you're careful about finding out each character's wants, you can try to find ways to compromise between them. While you still can't make more than one person happy, compromises let you keep one of the others from being unhappy.

That's an important distinction to make. Each character has a "happiness score" based on the player's decisions. Fulfilling a want adds to that score, finding a compromise maintains it, and ignoring a character's wants lowers it.

That score affects the ending of the game. In my play through, I tried to give Dan time to work on his novel but kept worrying about the state of his marriage and the lack of attention his son was getting, so most of my suggestions focused on improving those aspects of his life.

In the end, his book was a failure (ending his career as an author) but his marriage became stronger than ever and his son grew up to become a famous graphic novelist.

Apparently, I care about family more than having a successful career. But others will have different priorities, and those priorities can play out through eight different endings that range from everyone being happy to the Kaplans falling into ruin.

the novelist game decisions

After nearly two years in development, the game is receiving praise from critics and coverage from major gaming publications liking Polygon, Game Informer, and GameSpot.

While Hudson has spent more than a decade as a game designer — with big games like "Bioshock 2" and "Thief: Deadly Shadows" under his belt — making a game by himself still proved to be a challenge.

To make the game, Hudson employed Unity, a game engine favored by a number of independent game developers for its ease of use and incredibly active and helpful community. He isn't a programmer, so to put together the game's logic he used uScript, an add-on for Unity that lets game developers connect bits of logic visually rather than using thousands of lines of code.

According to Hudson, it took him about a week to become familiar with Unity. That's lucky, because figuring out what he was going to make in the first place took months.

When he first left his job at 2K Games after becoming fed-up with the avoidance of experimentation in traditional studio-based game development, Hudson thought he was going to start his indie career by making a simple game for the iPad. After a few false starts, he decided to tackle to problem of giving players "agency" in the stories they play through in video games.

Tired of games where the story happens around the player in cutscenes instead of being driven by their decisions during gameplay,Hudson came up with a concept a lot like "The Novelist" but with eight characters, each fitting a distinct stereotype — novelist, painter, old millionaire, etc. But that proved to be far too complex to tackle by himself.

"There would have been far too many permutations of the story to keep track of during writing," Hudson told me over coffee. "And with that many characters, it's hard to make the player care about the wants of any individual."

So he stripped it down to a far simpler group: the nuclear family, by many standards the building block of social interaction and community.

"That made the system behind the gameplay much easier to work with, because with only three characters it became a balanced equation: one character would be happy in any given situation, one character could remain neutral, and one character would become unhappy."

Many of the struggles faced by the game's titular character are reflections of Hudson's own problems and anxieties. After all, there isn't a huge gap between what goes into writing a book and writing the story for a game. In fact, at one point the player finds a bunch of inspirational and self-deprecating post-it notes in front of Dan's typewriter — Hudson says that those are actual notes he had at his desk that he wrote into the game when he was struck with a bout of writer's block.

Of course, not every scenario is inspired by Hudson's life. For instance, he's not a father. To create a realistic-feeling family dynamic, he surveyed friends who are parents and spoke to their kids about what it's like to be a parent and a six-year-old kid.

The result is a game that truly captures the emotional ups and downs of finding balance in one's life, whether it's between work and family or even between one's spouse and one's child.

While it's not heavy on action  — the primary game mode requires the player to find creative ways to keep out of the Kaplans' sight, though there's also a mode that lets non-gamers simply wander about the house freely to experience the story without worrying about hiding — the game offers satisfaction by showing that their decisions really matter, just as in real life.

For the price of a trip to the movies $14.99 on Hudson's site, available on PC and Mac — "The Novelist" provides 2-4 hours of gameplay per playthrough. While I'm not sure if I'm going to go through it again any time soon (simply because the choices I made were all gut reactions, making the story feel like my own), completionists will enjoy playing through the game to see the different endings.

Bottom line: For gamers who enjoy piecing together an emotional story, "The Novelist" is one of 2013's must-buys.

"Star Wars" actor Peter Mayhew who played Chewbacca in the series has shared more than 50 photos on Twitter this week from the making of the original trilogy.

We've selected some of the best to feature below with his commentary. Apparently, director George Lucas was referred to as Zazzle MoonBreaker on set sometimes.

Lindsay Lohan Is Asking You To Use Her Uber Referral Code So She Can Take Free Rides

lindsay lohan scary movie 5

The rich keep getting richer, but they'd like to take their Uber rides for free.

Lindsay Lohan, who is not endorsed by the private driver app, took to Twitter, tweeting out her personal Uber referral code.

If someone (perhaps one of her many millions of followers) uses the code when they take their first Uber ride, Lohan gets a $10 dollar credit to her Uber account. In January, Uber upped the incentive to $20.

We read about this at Betabeat.

Anyone who has used Uber at least once has the opportunity to share their code with anyone, but it's only good for the first ride. This means Lohan is now competing with you (yes, you!) when it comes to sharing referral codes with your friends that may follow her on Twitter.

Here's Lindsay's tweet:

Lohan isn't the only celebrity cashing in. Betabeat reports similar tweets from Neil Patrick Harris and Snoop Lion (formerly Snoop Dogg) have been making the rounds as well.

Lohan, with over 7 million followers, could be taking a lot of joyrides in an Uber this year.

Weather Channel's Highly Successful Mobile App Is Destroying Its Highly Successful Cable Channel (TWC, DTV)

Grand Canyon Lightning Storm

The Weather Channel is in a contract dispute with DirecTV that underlines just how vulnerable some cable TV channels are to mobile apps that provide similar need-to-know content.

DirecTV wants Weather Channel to take a 20% cut in the fees it pays to carry Weather Channel, in part because Weather Channel's audience has fallen 19% to 214,000 since 2011, according to Nielsen. DTV has blacked out the channel since Monday night.

The TV audience decline has come at the same time Weather Channel's mobile app has exploded in popularity. Because the app does something useful everyday, it's one of the few apps people download, use, and don't delete when they're bored of it. It was the 10th most popular free iPad app last year. More than 100 million people have downloaded it across all devices.

What's happening, obviously, is that people are changing their habits: They're checking the weather on their phones, and not the TV. It's hard to see Weather Channel reversing that trend, and indeed the station has changed much of its formatting from a 24/7 news cycle with anchors and correspondents to more drama-documentaries, such as "Hawaii Air Rescue."

The channel still gets viewer spikes during big storms, the WSJ noted:

David Kenny, chief executive of the channel's parent, Weather Co., disagrees [with DTV's demand]. "At the time of severe weather, TV is still where people go," he says. DirecTV's request for a "huge" fee reduction "didn't make sense, and we couldn't be the same service" if it was implemented, he added.

Steve Madden Thought His 'Wolf Of Wall Street' Portrayal Was 'Too Nerdy'

Steve Madden Occupy Wall StreetIf you've seen "The Wolf of Wall Street," you will recall the real life story line of Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, taking Steve Madden's shoe company public in 1993.

The IPO was a smashing success  until it all came crumbling down as Belfort ratted out Madden and others profiting from the brokerage firm’s illegal activities.

Jake HoffmanIn the film, Madden is portrayed as a shy, baseball cap-wearing, shoe-selling Jew from Long Island, played by Dustin Hoffman's 32-year-old actor son, Jake Hoffman  who is real life best buds with "Wolf" co-star, Jonah Hill.

In Madden's first interview since seeing the film, he tells PageSix of his on-screen portrayal: “The guy was too nerdy.”

Director Martin Scorsese did, however, nail the baseball cap that never leaves Madden’s head.

While the real Belfort went on to serve 22 months in federal prison, Madden refused cooperate with the feds and wound up spending 31 months behind bars.

While in prison, Madden fell in love with Wendy Ballew, an employee he corresponded with, according to PageSix. They got married as soon as he got out and now have three children.

As for whether he holds any grudges against Belfort, Madden says, “He ratted me out to save himself, but it was a long time ago, and I try not to live in the past. You’ve got to move on, and I have."

In fact, “We’ve done very well,” Madden said of his current shoe line that boasts over 185 stores across the globe. “Our stock has gone up about 100 times. We started with a $20 million market cap, and now the company is worth more than $2.3 billion.”

“Not to get all Gandhi or anything, but I had to go through all that to get where I am now,” Madden said. “No regrets.”

And Madden's "Wolf of Wall Street" 15 minutes of fame aren't up just yet. A documentary on Madden, produced by former gossip columnist Mitchell Fink, has been shooting for the past six months.

A new Harris Poll released Monday found that Americans are going to the movies less often.

According to the study, which polled 2,311 adults online, 66% of people reported going to the movies fewer times. People went to theaters an average of five times last year.

Instead, the Harris Poll found most people (57%) prefer watching movies at home instead of in a theater (21%) across all ages.

High concession prices and rude moviegoers, and ads that run before movie previews are among reasons people dislike heading out to the movies.

Here's a full breakdown between age groups via Harris Interactive

69% of people agree that 3D movies "are just an excuse to charge more for tickets."

Most people (56%) have snuck food into the movies.

More people (16% ) go to the movies by themselves than with parents (8%) or siblings (11%).

Most people head to the movies for the sound and picture quality on a big screen (58%) and as a short escape from life (45%).

Here Are The Rap Lyrics That Helped Convict A Guy Of Attempted Murder

Vonte Skinner

The New York Times has a disturbing op-ed about a defendant named Vonte Skinner whose violent rap lyrics were used to help convict him of attempting to kill an admitted drug dealer in New Jersey.

A New Jersey state appeals reversed Skinner's conviction in 2012, ruling the lyrics were "highly prejudicial" and ordering him a new trial. Now, the case is coming up before the Garden State's highest court, which will hear the dispute next week and potentially decide whether rap lyrics can be used against their authors.

The other evidence in the 2008 attempted murder case against Skinner was weak and consisted mostly of testimony from witnesses who kept changing their stories, according to the op-ed by professors Erik Nielson and Charis Kubrin.

At the trial, prosecutors read 13 pages of rap lyrics that were found in Skinner's car when he was arrested in 2005 for allegedly shooting Lamont Peterson multiple times at close range, according to court documents. The lyrics, while pretty graphic, were written before the crime and don't mention the victim at all.

Here's an excerpt from the lyrics read by the prosecution in court:

I'm from the city where [people] don't sleep. Wartime all my [person] speak with heat. I love bringin' heat and to beef melt ya' Jeep. Two to your helmet and four slugs drillin' your cheek to blow your face off and leave your brain caved in the street — the seat. I play with fire like pyros and gasoline, so, come test one. I hope your brain got a rhino vest on. Death is your final step, Dawg, ain't nothin' sweet here, everywhere I go, I got my heat.

There, if there's a problem, then pop-off. I got my fleet here. I'm that kickin' your door [person] spit in the four [person], rock your cap and watch you flip to the floor, [person], see if your gravity can defeat the law [person]. With two 9's — with two 9's, I am a hated [expletive] the law [person]. I am home now with Kays and Mac's, Ruger's and Techs. I'm, the dude to shoot at ya' neck, shatter your life like a bottle of Becks. One and only to slice a dude like bologna, you don't know me. I'll watch you pricks
die slowly, lay you stiff like a trophy. Don't approach me; I hurt dudes who play me closely. I keep to 9's smoking, bend a [person] and leave his ass open."

(The rest of the lyrics can be found here, starting at page 25.)

In overturning Skinner's conviction, the appeals court noted that there was a lack of evidence in the case aside from a cellphone owned by Skinner that was found on the street near Peterson along with several other phones. Peterson also couldn't provide convincing testimony that it was Skinner who shot him, the court noted. From the opinion:

Because there was no physical evidence linking defendant to this crime other than his cell phone and Peterson at times implicated and at times exonerated defendant, we have a significant doubt about whether the jurors would have found defendant guilty if they had not been required to listen to the extended reading of these disturbing and highly prejudicial lyrics.

While Skinner's conviction was ultimately overturned, the Times op-ed notes that the ACLU has found that there were recently 18 cases in which courts considered whether rap lyrics could be used as evidence. In 80% of those cases, a judge allowed the rap lyrics as evidence.

This trend is disturbing because, as the ACLU notes, rap is a form of artistic expression protected by the First Amendment. It's also disturbing because rap is a medium often used by young, black men, who make up a disproportionate part of the prison population.

"These lyrics are Mr. Skinner's social and political commentary on impoverished black neighborhoods in our inner cities," the ACLU wrote in a "friend of the court" brief filed with the New Jersey Supreme Court. "As such, they are entitled to even greater protections than other artistic expressions."

Here's The Full Story Behind That Crazy Martha Stewart Cough Drop Ad From The Golden Globes

Those who tuned into the Golden Globes on Sunday night may have been surprised to see a Martha Stewart cough drop ad break up the usual prime time commercials. It was oddly direct and old-fashioned, as if someone from Saturday Night Live directed it for one of its spoofs.

Well, a former SNL director — who also happens to be lead writer of the David Spade comedy "Joe Dirt" — was behind it, and Stewart was recruited only after the first actress suffered a "nervous breakdown" right before filming. Despite the confused reactions on Twitter Sunday night, the Pine Brothers lozenge company said it has doubled the brand's sales since it premiered in October.

In the commercial, Martha Stewart walks into a room and introduces herself only by her first name. There is no soundtrack, and the only effect is a jarring JPEG overlay of Pine Brothers Softish Throat Drops:

Victoria Knight-McDowell, creator of the popular herbal supplement Airborne (she sold the company in 2005), bought the dying Pine Brothers brand with her husband Rider McDowell in 2011. We talked to Rider about the ad.

"We reached out to Martha via her agent at CAA, after our first actress had a nervous breakdown the morning of the shoot," he said. Stewart had been Pine Brothers' first choice all along, but the company did not immediately go to her because it assumed she would not want to endorse a product that did not have her name attached to it.

But Stewart agreed. McDowell directed the other Pine Bros. ads made by the brand's in-house team but decided to recruit his friend Fred Wolf, a comedy writer and director whose work also includes "Grown Ups" and "The Chevy Chase Show."

The ad's lack of background noise separated it from the commercials that played before and after it.

"The ad was indeed direct, and hopefully arrestingly so. The goal was to show Martha's endorsement and to directly assert the virtues of the product. In a world full of bells and whistles, the idea was to have a simple approach," McDowell said.

The ad premiered in late October and has been airing during daytime television. McDowell said the company paid "under $2 million" to have the ad shown during the Golden Globes and its pre-show and after-show segments.

According to McDowell, Stewart's endorsement has been enormously beneficial.

"And at 72 [she] is very easy on the eyes!" he added.

An alleged egging has led to pop star Justin Bieber's house being raided by police, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Bieber's friend Lil Za was reportedly arrested for drug possession at the home, according to TMZ. The arrest was related to narcotics police believe to be cocaine, authorities said during a press conference Tuesday.

Authorities said the cocaine was in plain view of police while they were searching Bieber's home in relation to the egging incident.

Police served a felony search warrant at Bieber's Calabasas house on Tuesday. Bieber was detained while police searched his home.

The egging reportedly happened last week at Bieber's neighbor's house and caused several thousand dollars worth of damage. A neighbor told police that he saw Bieber throwing the eggs, according to the LA Times.

The investigation is ongoing. Bieber has been cooperative.

Weather Channel CEO Says Programming May Never Return To DirecTV (TWC, DTV)

Weather Channel CEO David Kenny says it's possible that DirecTV may never carry his programming again.
DirecTV currently has Weather Channel blacked out on its system over a contract dispute. DTV wants to reduce what it pays to carry Weather Channel's shows.

Today, Kenny told Business Insider, "DirecTV has dropped the Weather Channel. We certainly believe it could be permanent. We have a plan to continue to gain audience in the rest of the TV world. We have a strong TV business without them."

Kenny is furious because DTV has been making the argument that Weather Channel's audience has declined due to people using mobile apps for forecasts instead of turning on the TV.

"Next year they'll make that argument about stock prices, then they'll make it about news. It's odd to make that argument that cable TV is dead except for NFL. It's odd to see them say that," he says. "They could no longer believe in TV, so we're just moving on. I hope they'll come back."

The Weather Channel's fee dispute with DirecTV underlines just how vulnerable some cable TV channels are to mobile apps that provide similar need-to-know content.

DirecTV wants Weather Channel to take a 20% cut in the fees it pays to carry Weather Channel, in part because Weather Channel's audience has fallen 19% to 214,000 since 2011, according to Nielsen. Currently, DTV pays about 13 cents per subscriber per month, according to numbers from SNL Kagan, the cable industry monitor.
