Seinfeld's 'Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee' Is Back With Louis CK And The Silliest Fiat Ever

$

seinfeld louis ck comedians cars coffee fiat jollySeason three of Jerry Seinfeld's show "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" kicked off this week, and the first episode is excellent.

It stars Seinfeld, Louis C.K., and a 1959 Fiat Jolly, one of the silliest cars ever made. The Jolly doesn't have doors or much of a roof, and it's powered by a measly two-cylinder engine.

The premise of the show is simple: Seinfeld picks up another comedian in an unusual car, and they take a drive and chat.

On a drive around New York City, the two comedians laugh about the car, discuss their careers, and head to Chelsea Piers, where they take Louis C.K.'s boat out for a spin.

Here Are The Exact Reasons Millennials Say They've Stopped Trusting Jay Z

Jay-Z

Last week, we wrote a story about a survey that suggested millennial consumers think Jay Z suffers from a lack of authenticity.

As a result, the survey found, the Brooklyn-born rapper and business mogul has not been able to convince young consumers to buy the products he endorses.

The story drew sharp criticism from Jay Z's fans in both the marketing and hip-hop communities, many of whom either took issue with the research methods of celebrity branding expert Jeetendr Sehdev, or felt Business Insider was not qualified to write about hip-hop culture.

Now, Sehdev has been kind enough to share with us some of the exact quotes given to him by the 1,000 millennials he surveyed, many of whom gave Jay Z poor marks in the categories of honesty and trustworthiness. Here is what they said:

On Jay Z's lack of transparency with regard to his personal life:

  • "I don't really know much about his background. He seems quite guarded. I think he was a drug dealer."

On his partnership with Barney's, which was criticized after the upscale retailer was sued for racially profiling black customers:

  • "I never really understood the Jay Z/Barney’s deal. That should have never happened."
  • "I love Rocawear, but don't understand why he'd work with Barney's. It's kind of a contradiction."
  • "What's Barney's got to do with hip-hop?"

On Jay Z's artistic integrity:

  • "He supposedly made Rihanna but he’s got a full team behind him. He probably doesn't even write his own songs."
  • "A pop star and a serious hip hop artist? He’s sold out."

On Jay Z selling his stake in the Brooklyn Nets shortly after he helped move the team from New Jersey:

  • "I thought he was supporting his hood, Brooklyn, not his net income."
  • "It's a shame about what happened with the Brooklyn Nets. That said a lot about his loyalty."

On the "Life + Times" lifestyle website, which some survey respondents found narcissistic:

  • "The website doesn't tell me much about his real life or times, just his real ego."

To be fair, some of these claims (particularly the one about whether Jay Z writes his own music) are sort of silly, and probably come from people who aren't inclined to be influenced by Jay Z either way.

Sehdev said that if Jay Z wants to help the brands he works with sell more of their products, he could work to consolidate his brand by only accepting endorsement deals that fit with the image he hopes to communicate to the public.

While millennials are likely to be drawn to Jay Z's entrepreneurial spirit, Sehdev said the hip-hop star is currently suffering from what he called "brand over-extension."

"He is publicly involved in everything from Barney's to Bacardi to Broadway," Sehdev said.

Though Jay Z's struggles growing up without a father in a poor Brooklyn housing project are the subject of much of his early work, Sehdev said he could benefit from doing more to show this more human side of himself to those who haven't yet experienced it.

"He is widely recognized and respected as a cool and successful businessperson, but millennials have their own struggles and relate well to those who do the same," Sehdev said.

Beginning this weekend, NBC and CBS will begin streaming their coverage of the NFL playoffs for free.

While The Verge writes that NBC did this in 2012, CBS is broadcasting the games online for the first time.

The games on each network will vary. NBC will air both its wild card matchups Saturday on the NBC sports website. CBS will stream all four of its playoff games as well as the AFC championships.

Although these networks are doing their best to capitalize on the last shred of ratings they can get before this year's football season officially ends, Fox will be streaming the ultimate event.

Variety reports that the channel will live stream the Super Bowl, but the NFC playoff streams will be barricaded behind a paywall. NFC postseason games will be available for a stream to a selection of pay-TV partners like Comcast, AT&T U-verse, and Cablevision Systems.

The Super Bowl starts at 6:30 pm Eastern on February 2. The stream can be found on foxsportsgo.com and on the FoxSportsGo iOS app which you can download here

Phil Robertson Defends His Right To 'Blow A Mallard's Head Smooth Off' In Ad For 'Duck Dynasty' Branded Guns

duck hunt guns ad

The "Duck Dynasty" crew announced to the media on Thursday that they shipped out its line of guns, which will be sold in stores soon.

In the wake of the scandal over family patriarch Phil Robertson's homophobic remarks in a GQ article, it might be fair to say that everything A&E's reality show family does will be waged in the name of a culture war. That said, out of all the stuff sold under the "Duck Dynasty" family's Duck Commander brand — cigars, wine, bobble heads, Chia pets — a line of hunting guns actually makes sense.

Despite yesterday's announcement, the launch commercial has been online since mid-November and three others were uploaded in December. Here's one where Phil incites the Declaration of Independence and says that for him, true happiness is "to blow a mallard's head smooth off":

Gun manufacturer Mossberg is producing the line, which includes nine kinds of shotguns, like the ones in the commercial.

The Duck Commander crew is also selling a semi-automatic rifle and semi-automatic pistol. And while the big one may look like an assault rifle, both it and the pistol are a relatively low .22 caliber. According to the site, hunters can use these non-traditional duck hunting weapons to clear out venomous snakes from their shooting sites:

131230131417 duck commander guns 620xaThere are three other ads for the gun line, all narrated by Phil. One is about going back to our roots (as rural Americans, presumably), another about being designed by God to kill ducks, and a final one about the beauty of duck season.

The guns will start at around $500, according to CNN Money. Each purchase comes with an American flag bandana like the one Willie Robertson wears in the show.

Amazon Has Cracked Down On 'Monster Porn' — Here's A (SFW) Re-enactment Of What This Bizarre Fantasy Genre Is Actually Like

$

A new fantasy genre known as "monster porn" is a lot more popular than you might imagine.

So popular, in fact, that Amazon has cracked down on it and started banning it from its bookstore.

Sometimes known as "cryptozoological erotica" or "erotic horror," monster porn features mythical creatures, extraterrestrials, and robots that have sex with humans. Sasquatch, Werewolves, and Frankenstein are popular characters.

Last month Business Insider published an investigation into the business of monster porn and Amazon's attempt to squelch it (See: MONSTER PORN: Amazon Cracks Down On America's Latest Sex Fantasy). In this story, we revealed the popularity of the genre and the startling amount of money that popular monster-porn authors can make.

Still, some of our readers were left wondering... what is monster porn actually like?

So we decided to do a dramatic reading and reenactment of (part of) a monster porn scene for you.

K.J. Burkhardt's "Taken By The Monsters: An Erotic Monster Tale" was temporarily banned by Amazon, but it has now been reinstated. So if you're curious about all the nitty-gritty details, you can go buy it.

In the meantime, Burkhardt (a pen name) has graciously allowed us to excerpt from her short story for a G-rated video re-enactment. The scene involves a hairy "humanoid" creature and a young woman.

‘Wolf Of Wall Street’ Breaks F-Word Record

"The Wolf of Wall Street" is all about excess  including the number of times curse words are spewed through the characters' mouths.

The Golden Globe-nominated Martin Scorsese film used the F-word so many times, in fact, that it set a new record in an American feature film.

"The word 'f---' and its variants is used 506 times over 'The Wolf of Wall Street’s' 180-minute running time," according to a Variety report.

Previously, the record for a non-documentary was Spike Lee’s 1999 film “Summer of Sam” with 435 instances.

But Scorsese is no stranger to expletives — his movies "Casino" (422 times "f---" is said) and "Goodfellas" (300 times) both make the top 12.

The overall record, however, belongs to a 2005 comedy documentary called "F---" about the word.

BlackBerry announced today that it has filed a lawsuit against Typo Product, a company started by TV personality Ryan Seacrest. The company makes a keyboard accessory that snaps onto the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S. BlackBerry says the accessory looks too much like the physical keyboards found on BlackBerry phones.

They look like this:

Typo Keyboards

Here's the statement from BlackBerry:

BlackBerry® Limited (NASDAQ: BBRY; TSX: BB), a world leader in mobile communications, today announced that it has filed a lawsuit against Typo Products LLC (“Typo”).

Typo, founded by entrepreneur Laurence Hallier and TV host and media personality Ryan Seacrest, announced the Typo Keyboard™ would be available for pre-order this month. The complaint against Typo alleges patent infringement and that Typo has blatantly copied BlackBerry’s keyboard with its iPhone® keyboard case designed to slip on to iPhone devices.

“This is a blatant infringement against BlackBerry’s iconic keyboard, and we will vigorously protect our intellectual property against any company that attempts to copy our unique design. From the beginning, BlackBerry has always focused on offering an exceptional typing experience that combines a great design with ergonomic excellence. We are flattered by the desire to graft our keyboard onto other smartphones, but we will not tolerate such activity without fair compensation for using our intellectual property and our technological innovations,” said Steve Zipperstein, BlackBerry's General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer.

The Typo Keyboard violates BlackBerry's intellectual property rights, and BlackBerry will protect those rights from blatant copying and infringement. BlackBerry’s iconic physical keyboard designs have been recognized by the press and the public as a significant market differentiator for its mobile handheld devices. This lawsuit has been filed in the Northern District of California.

Why Keanu Reeves' '47 Ronin' Was A Huge Box-Office Bomb

$
0
0

47 ronin keanu reeves

Keanu Reeves’ return to the box-office Christmas was a huge box-office flop.

Universal’s big-budget samurai film debuted to $9.9 million over the holiday weekend.

That wasn’t good news for the studio since “47 Ronin” has been said to cost anywhere from $175 million to $225 million

It’s current worldwide gross of $48.7 million would make it one of the biggest box-office bombs of 2013.

While most critic reviews denounce the film (it sits at 11% on Rotten Tomatoes), audience reception is better (60%). Still Reeves’ failed to capture an audience large enough to bring in a lot of money.

Why didn’t “47 Ronin” make a bigger splash Christmas Day?

OVER SATURATION

the wolf of wall streetThere were so many movies that came out on and right before the holiday

“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “The Hobbit” sequel, “Anchorman 2,” “American Hustle” and more were all vying for audience attention.

No one has time to see THAT many movies. When options are limited, you need to decide which to see and “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “American Hustle” along with “Her” (if you’re in NY or LA) have been receiving all the word-of-mouth buzz.

TOO LONG IN THE UNIVERSAL VAULT

“47 Ronin” was originally supposed to be released in November 2012. Production delays — which included reshoots and editing overseen by a Universal co-chairwoman —  pushed the film back numerous times.

According to The Wrap, the film would have had to make $500 million to break even— something a Keanu Reeves film has only done once a decade ago.

Universal knew upon releasing this film it was going to be a big-budget risk and went so far as to suggest it knew the film would flop days before its release.

Via The Hollywood Reporter

"The studio took the unusual step of explaining its accounting process in the days leading up to Ronin's release. 'Universal Pictures regularly evaluates its film slate for potential adjustment. In the case of 47 Ronin, we adjusted film costs in previous quarters, and as a result, our financial performance will not be negatively impacted this quarter by its theatrical performance.'"

REEVES’ BOX-OFFICE DRAW

keanu reeves 47 roninThe last time Reeves’ commanded a huge blockbuster north of $400 million was 2003’s “The Matrix: Revolutions.”

There has been “Constantine” (2005) and “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (2008) since then, but most of the actor’s roles have been in smaller films (“Street Kings,” “Henry’s Crime”).

You can say Reeves’ star may have faded a bit; however, it’s clear audiences still will go out to see the actor if audience reception for the film is better than what the critics say.

It makes one wonder why the Christmas push was so necessary for this film when it may have faired better after the holidays.

The Car Paul Walker Died In Was Going More Than 100 Miles Per Hour When It Crashed, Autopsy Says

A final autopsy report for "Fast & Furious" actor Paul Walker reveals that the car he was riding in was traveling at more than 100 miles per hour when it crashed, the Los Angeles Times reports.

His body was badly burned and his skull was fractured during the November crash, the autopsy notes.

Walker was riding in a 2005 Porsche with his friend and former racer Roger Rodas when Rodas lost control of the car, which spun around a lightpole and a tree before bursting into flames.

TMZ reported that a mechanical failure might have caused the accident, but it appears that the car was just difficult to control. The LA Times notes that the car was built without a stability management system that most Porsches come equipped with.

Walker was 40 years old when he died. His character in the successful "Fast & Furious" movie franchise will be "retired," according to sources who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter. Walker died halfway through filming for the seventh movie. He will reportedly be written out of the movie.

SeaWorld Tried To Sway A Poll About 'Blackfish,' The Documentary It Doesn't Want You To See

Tilicum

It appears that SeaWorld employees are angry at the damage done to its reputation by "Blackfish," a documentary that claimed the theme park chain ran shows at its Orlando location featuring a killer whale the company knew to have already killed two of its trainers.

The film suggests SeaWorld's whales are slowly going crazy, like prisoners kept in a bathtub for life.

SeaWorld called the film "inaccurate and misleading" when it aired on CNN in October, and now, the company has gone to even greater lengths to restore its reputation among people who feel SeaWorld was responsible for the death of the whale's third victim.

On Dec. 31, The Orlando Business Journal conducted an online poll asking whether 'Blackfish' had changed readers' perception of SeaWorld, which has one of its three parks in Orlando. When the poll remarkably revealed that 99% of respondents said the film did not change their perception of the theme park, Orlando Business Journal reporter Richard Bilbao decided to check just where all these votes were coming from.

The answer? SeaWorld.

Bilbao reports that about 54% of the poll's 328 votes came from a single Orlando location, whose Internet Protocol Address linked it to SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment.

Though 95% of respondents would have voted "No," even without SeaWorld's intervention, the tide has turned dramatically since SeaWorld's voting was made public Monday afternoon. The poll currently shows that 73% of more than 2,000 voters say "Blackfish" changed their perception of SeaWorld.

In response, a SeaWorld spokesperson Nick Gollattscheck told The Orlando Business Journal that the votes came from passionate SeaWorld employees supporting their company.

"Our team members have strong feelings about their park and company, and we encouraged them to make their opinions known," Gollattscheck said.

"Blackfish" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, 2013. When CNN aired the film in October, the broadcast sparked a conversation about how being kept in captivity can have destructive psychological effects on killer whales, and whether SeaWorld's treatment of its whales makes them unsafe for humans to be around.

Among other negative ramifications SeaWorld suffered following the film, activists convinced musical acts like Willie Nelson and the Barenaked Ladies to cancel concerts they'd been scheduled to play at its parks.

The Unreal Popularity Of 'Sherlock' In China

benedict cumberbatch sherlock

The BBC's "Sherlock" franchise has been a huge worldwide hit, broadcast in more than 200 territories and turning Benedict Cumberbatch into an unlikely sex symbol.

Perhaps nowhere can the worldwide nature of this success be seen better than on Youku, a popular Chinese video hosting service. The long-awaited first episode of the third season appeared on the service just a couple of hours after it first appeared on British television on New Year's Day, according to the BBC. According to Youku's internal metrics, the episode has been viewed almost seven million times, and the series has a very favorable rating of 9.5:

Sherlock Data Youku

Putting that in context, in the U.K. the show was reportedly watched by almost 10 million when shown on the country's biggest TV channel, BBC One, at primetime.

"Sherlock"'s success in China is so big than when British Prime Minister David Cameron visited the country and opened an account on the social network Weibo, he was reportedly besieged by question's about the show. Chinese viewers are not immune to the sex appeal of Cumberbatch either — Foreign Policy's Liz Carter even found a rich seam in gay Sherlock Holmes fanfiction in China.

American readers may be left with a bigger question, however — how come Chinese viewers can watch the show now and they have to wait til January 19? For that, you have to look at the piracy heavy world of Chinese media. As Gwynn Guilford at Quartz points out, it makes more sense for the BBC to upload the episode officially to Youku before the illegal streaming sites get their own version up.

North Carolina’s Independent Wrestling Circuit Looks Seriously Brutal [PHOTOS]

Canipe 8764

North Carolina native Aaron Canipe knew that independent wrestling matches were popular entertainment in the areas near his hometown of Hickory, but he never opted to go, until recently.

Intrigued by advertisements around town promising cage matches and “bring-your-own-weapons” fights, Canipe drove down to the Hickory National Guard Armory for a Saturday night that he called “more entertaining and less expensive than a movie ticket.”

Independent wrestling, known as the “indy circuit” to wrestling aficionados, is equivalent to the minor league for World Wrestling Entertainment and other pro wrestling organizations. For fans, a trip to the “indy circuit” can be a way to see the next superstar before they make it to the WWE or a place to see hungry wrestlers put in the extra effort to make a name for themselves and rile up the crowd.

Professional wrestling may be part acting and part sport, but it's clear that, even if the outcomes are predetermined, the way they get there can be pretty violent.

This match was promoted by local wrestling outfit Milestone Wrestling. The promoters are so small that new wrestlers often show up and wrestlers often change their stage names.

Canipe 8595

Like the WWE stars that they aspire to, wrestlers take on colorful names and outlandish stage personalities to curry favor with the audience.

Canipe 9089

Belton "The House Of Pain" Creedmore is a mainstay on the North Carolina wrestling circuit. He is known as a brutal and vicious competitor.

Canipe 9188

The matches attract a lively local crowd. Canipe said he was one of a handful of first-timers, but most of the attendees have been following the matches for some times.

Canipe 8695

To drum up interest in the matches, promoters often arrange "bring-your-own-weapons" matches, where wrestlers use a variety of props provided by the audience, such as chairs, tables, light bulbs, and even bats. The results can be dangerous.

Canipe 8443

Despite their violent nature, most matches are considered to be family entertainment.

Canipe 8931

Making it on the "indy circuit" is extremely difficult. Most matches are so small that wrestlers either fight for free or get paid between $50-100. To make ends meet, many sell merchandise and videos or work other jobs.

Canipe 8845

Canipe says that he's positive that wrestlers get hurt during the matches, though he thinks that they exaggerate the pain they're experiencing for the audience's benefit.

Canipe 7821

Mike Fury (also known as Chaotic Fury) is part of Death Proof, a straight-edge (no alcohol, tobacco or drugs) tag-team group. They are one of Milestone's biggest names.

Canipe 7563

Working on the "indy circuit" is the best way for aspiring wrestlers to build up the experience and fanbase to make the jump to the "pros."

Canipe 9001

Wrestlers often advertise the dangerous stunts they do, such as walking barefoot over thumbtacks or using barbed wire webs. Canipe says the craziest thing he saw a wrestler do was tear open cans of soda with his teeth.

Canipe 9199

"I had to see it to believe it," Canipe says of the match.

Phil Everly, one half of the vocal brother duo the Everly Brothers, has died at 74 of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, LA Times is reporting.

Paul Walker’s character won’t be killed off in the next “Fast & Furious” movie.

Instead, his character Brian O’Connor will be retired in the next installment, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

After Walker’s death last November, director James Wan and Universal Studios executives met to discuss how to continue the franchise.

The next film was originally set for a summer 2014 release.

Though much of the sequel was already shot, there were still major scenes with Walker that needed filming.

The Daily Mail previously reported Walker’s lookalike brother, Cody Walker, was approached to possibly fill in for final scenes with O’Connor’s character.

“Fast and Furious 7” has since been pushed back until April 10, 2015.

When Things Go Wrong At 20,000 Feet... One Of The Most Remarkable Survival Stories Ever

Touching The Void

In 1985, two British climbers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, became the first people to ascend the west face of Siula Grande, a 21,000-foot peak in the Peruvian Andes.

What happened next is one of the most remarkable and inspiring survival stories ever. It's also an extraordinary example of self-reliance, decision-making under duress, and force of will.

One of the climbers, Joe Simpson, wrote a book about the experience called "Touching The Void." In 2003, the story was made into a movie directed by Kevin Macdonald. The movie was narrated by Simpson and Yates, with actors re-enacting the events in Peru and the Alps.

Using screenshots from the movie, I've told an abridged version of the story below. You can also buy the book or movie here, or watch the movie on Netflix.

The approach to Siula Grande is a two-day hike from the nearest road.

The climbers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, establish a base camp about 4-5 miles from the mountain. Then, early in the morning, they set off...

23 Successful Actors Who Dropped Out Of High School

$

Mark Wahlberg

Sure Mark Wahlberg is a successful actor, having starred in big-time hits like "The Departed" and "The Fighter," but the Boston-bred star didn't earn his high school diploma until just this year.

Back in September, Wahlberg penned a column for the Huffington Post, explaining his motivations for finishing his degree.

"For almost a year, I've been taking classes and studying any chance I could get - on the set, traveling for work and at home," he wrote. "It has been both humbling and challenging, but I'm happy to report that I am officially a high school graduate, having received my diploma this summer."

And Wahlberg isn't the only big name who didn't graduate.

In fact, Walt Disney himself didn't finish high school, even writing a letter to his school principal saying how "disgusted" he was with his education there.

There are many more actors just like Wahlberg and Disney — stars who left high school and found huge success in Hollywood.

Jim Carrey dropped out of school to help support his family.

He may be one of Hollywood's most famous comedians, with big-name hits like "Liar Liar" and "The Truman Show" on his résumé, but Carrey's life wasn't always such smooth sailing.

Growing up in poverty in Ontario, Canada, Carrey and his siblings worked as janitors at a local factory. When Carrey's mother fell ill, the aspiring actor dropped out of school to help care for her.

Though his family ended up taking residence in a VW bus for awhile, things picked up and the family relocated to Toronto, where Carrey began performing on the local comedy circuit.

At the age of 18, Carrey found his first credit with TV series, "The All-Night Show."

Charlie Sheen earned his high school degree this year.

Sheen attended Santa Monica High School (alongside buddies Sean Penn and Rob Lowe), but his poor grades and attendance got him expelled just a few weeks before graduation.

But the now successful "Two and a Half Men" actor made sure to earn his degree — just this year, actually.

Instead of taking classes to finish up his remaining few credits, the now 48-year-old Sheen told TMZ he got his credits because of charity work he did for the school.

Sheen said he bothered to do it because he wanted to beat "a lifelong habit of never finishing things."

Christina Applegate dropped out of high school and found success on "Married ... with Children."

Hollywood runs in Applegate's veins — her mother was an actress and her father was a record producer, so it isn't a big surprise that the "Anchorman" star decided to pursue acting at a young age, too.

Having appeared in several movies while still at an elementary-school age, Applegate briefly attended Excelsior High School in Hollywood, dropping out during her junior year.

Applegate was 15 years old when she landed a huge role as Kelly Bundy on "Married ... with Children."
