Adam Sandler's Embarrassing Career By The Numbers

0
0

jack and jill adam sandler

Adam Sandler broke one of Hollywood's most undesirable records Sunday: He received the most Razzie nominations ever by a star in one year.

The annual Golden Raspberry Awards, now in their 32nd year, reward the worst in film, and Sandler received a record 11 nods for his work as a writer, actor, and producer in a trio of critically-ravaged 2011 films — Jack and JillJust Go With It, and Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star.

Though Sandler's been branded "the patron saint of scathing critical responses," he nevertheless remains one of Hollywood's few reliable box office stars. Here's a look at how his "embarrassing," paradoxical career breaks down:

11
Razzie nominations earned by Adam Sandler this year, a record for one star. (The winners will be announced April 1.)

5
The previous record for most nominations in one year, set by Eddie Murphy

Number of nominations Sandler received for Jack and Jill: Worst Actor, Worst Actress (for his cross-dressing performance as Jill), Worst Screenplay, and Worst Ensemble. The movie received 8 additional Razzie nods.

7
Times Sandler has been nominated for a Worst Actor Razzie. He's only won once, for his performance in Big Daddy.

10
Career Razzie wins by Sylvester Stallone, a record

37
Number of films that Sandler has either acted in, directed, written, or produced, according to Rotten Tomatoesa website which aggregates critical opinion

32
Number of those films which were rated "rotten," meaning that fewer than 50 percent of the critics considered by Rotten Tomatoes recommend the movie

25
Number of films in which Sandler has starred, according to Box Office Mojo

12
Number of those films that have earned more than $100 million at the domestic box office. Has Sandler "actually developed a foolproof formula for turning awful films into multiplex gold," wonders Julie Miller atMovieline

3
Percentage of critics who recommended Jack and Jill on Rotten Tomatoes

$74 million
Domestic box office haul for Jack and Jill. By comparison, The Artist, which just picked up the Best Picture Oscar, has earned less than half that amount to date.

19
Percentage of critics who recommended Just Go With It, which earned five Razzie nominations this year, on Rotten Tomatoes

$103 million
Domestic box office haul for Just Go With It, again suggesting a "box office paradox" when it comes to Sandler

10
Percentage of critics who recommended Grown Ups on Rotten Tomatoes

$162 million
Domestic box office haul for Grown Ups

0
Percentage of critics who recommended Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, which Sandler co-wrote and produced

79
Percentage of critics who recommended 2002's Punch-Drunk Love, Sandler's biggest critical hit

$17 million
Box office haul for Punch-Drunk Love. Only Airheads and Mixed Nuts, both released before Sandler's breakout performance in 1995's Billy Madison, grossed less.

1
Number of Golden Globe nominations received by Sandler to date. The sole nod was for Punch-Drunk Love.

THE OSCARS FOR QUANTS: The 2012 Academy Awards In Charts And Data

oscar charts

Sure, The Artist did well at the Academy Awards. But what does that really mean, statistically?

As usual, our friends at AddThis, a company that provides social media sharing tools for web publishers, tracked their network of 11 million sites and 1.2 billion unique users per month to find out which Oscar events really drove chatter among consumers.

The data show that the real Oscar winners were the iPad, Pinterest, Sacha Baron Cohen and Twitter. Losers included Ryan Seacrest, Facebook and Billy Crystal.

This was the background chatter in the weeks prior to the Oscars. Note that 'Hugo' dominates.

Demian Bichir peaked when he was nominated for a SAG award for 'Better Life.' But interest faded. More people were interested in George Clooney than Jean Dujardin of 'The Artist' in the week before the Oscars.

Prior to the show, the people's choice for Best Actress was Viola Davis, not Meryl Streep.

Drew Barrymore Gets Into The Wine Business With A $20 Pinot Grigio

drew barrymore wine

Drew Barrymore is joining the wine business as the newest celebrity vintner.

In collaboration with Wilson Daniels wineries, Barrymore's eponymously named wine will be a crisp Italian pinot grigio.

"A fan of crisp, fruity white wines, Barrymore has created a wine that reflects her style and personality: fresh, dynamic and fun," the Wilson Daniels website says.

She decided to tap into the wine market after being drawn to the "journey" that wine takes, according to the website.

But the neatest bit about the wine could be that that the label, a swirly capital B, was designed by Shepard Fairey, the same artist behind the Obama Hope posters in 2008.

It is set to launch later this year in California at an asking price of $19.99 per bottle.

Celebrity Gender-Benders: Who Crossed The Line Successfully—And Who Didn't

0
0

Celebrities-Who-Cross-Dress-In-Film

Sometimes the best way to get recognition is to play against type.

And that is exactly what this list of 17 gender-bending actors and actresses did—for better or worse.

This weekend, Adam Sandler received a record breaking 11 Razzie nominations for his three terrible movies this year. One in particular, "Jack and Jill" earned him the disgrace of getting Worst Actor and Worst Actress.

Glenn Close, however, received an Oscar nod for this year's "Albert Nobbs," in which she plays a woman disguising herself as a male butler.

In honor of Sandler's horrific display of comedic talent and Close's cross-dressing brush with Oscar, we've compiled the best and worst gender-bending performances on screen from the past 50 years.

BEST: Glenn Close "Albert Nobbs"

The same year that Adam Sandler offered up a terrible cross-dressing performance in "Jack&Jill," Glenn Close delivered one that received an Oscar nomination.

Close plays Albert Nobbs, a woman who has disguised herself as a man for 30 years in order to serve as a butler and save up money for her own shop.

The actress received her sixth Oscar nomination for the role while the film was also nominated for Best Makeup (rightfully so) and Best Supporting Actress for Janet McTeer who also expertly plays a woman who disguises herself as a man.

WORST: Adam Sandler "Jack and Jill"

Following in the footsteps of Eddie Murphy's disgustingly bad "Norbit," Adam Sandler tackles cross dressing in this film about a man who must spend Thanksgiving with his awful twin sister, who then refuses to leave his house and family.

If screeching like a hyena were a talent, Sandler would win an Oscar for it in this film. His "Jill" is an absolute disaster who actually attracts the advances of Al Pacino, playing himself as a total creep.

It's no wonder Sandler was nominated for Worst Actor and Actress.

The film also had the dishonor of cleaning up with Razzie nominations including a Worst Supporting Actress nod for Katie Holmes (as Sandler's wife), two Worst Supporting Actor nods for Pacino and Sandler movie staple Nick Swarsdon, Worst Screenplay, Worst Director and Worst Picture, just to name a few.

BEST: Robin Williams "Mrs. Doubtfire"

Another man-becomes-woman film, this movie works solely on the comedic talent of Robin Williams.

"Mrs. Doubtfire" is a sweet film about a man who loses his family and must dress as a female housekeeper to get close to them again.

Williams shines as Mrs. Doubtfire and as his male self Daniel Hillard. His affinity for impressions, voices and physical comedy make this film a must-see for all audiences.

Check out Williams doing his, or well, "her," thing:

Marvel Just Released This Awesome New Poster For 'The Avengers'

0

tony-stark-avengers-poster

Marvel is getting us excited for the reveal of their new trailer tomorrow by spoiling us with a new poster for "The Avengers." And, boy, is it awesome.

The one-sheeter pits the seven stars of the film—Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson—fighting a city in chaos. (Well, except Captain America. He looks like he's modeling as opposed to fighting crime. Sorry Evans.)

The plot follows the Marvel cast assembling together to take down an alien race seeking to destroy the planet led by Thor's brother Loki

Some sites are wondering why Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) appears without his trademark helmet. What's there to hide? Stark outed himself as Iron Man a long time ago. Batman and Spider-Man have reasons to hide behind their masks.

Plus, he's not the only one without headgear. Take a look at Captain America.

This isn't the first time we've seen the two without their headgear in perilous moments. If anything, this should get us more psyched for the action-packed comic adventure due out May 4.

Check back tomorrow for the new trailer. In the meantime, see the poster chock-full of superheroes below:

GOODBYE, CABLE TV: 2.3 Million Americans Have Pulled The Plug Since 2010

0
0

videodrome

This chart (below) from ISI Group tells you all you need to know about the fate of cable TV in the age of the iPad: Since Q1 2010, 2.3 million people have stopped subscribing to pay TV as delivered by a cable TV companies such as Cablevision, Comcast, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable, Dish, Verizon, and AT&T.

Currently, only 41.5 million Americans watch TV on pay cable.

I've been arguing for a while now that Americans are on the cusp of a dramatic change in how they watch video. They're moving to video over the internet. Traditional TV is dying, in much the same way that, in the mid-2000s, we all largely stopped using hardwired telephones to make calls in favor of wireless mobile cellphones.

Hardwired phones are still a big business, of course, and most households still have them. But they're really a vestigial offshoot of whatever bundled communications package you've bought.

It looks like cable is about to go the same way. Although its subscriber numbers are dwindling, subscriber numbers for satellite TV and broadband phone/internet service remain relatively healthy, as the second chart (below) shows. That suggests to me that there is a growing number of households choosing a broadband package with the internet as their top priority, and a dwindling number choosing it based on TV.

Ironically, the fall has come at a time when cable is making more ad money than ever. It's a supply-and-demand issue: It may be that cable TV's audience is dwindling, but it's still one of the few venues that reliably delivers millions of eyeballs all at once.

First, the cable TV chart, based on numbers from ISI Group:

Here's the market share situation. Note that 2011 was a threshold year, when cable slipped from having more than 50 percent of the market to less:

Beyoncé, Gwyneth, Reese And Cameron Unite For New Ryan Murphy Film

One-Hit-Wonders-Paltrow-Witherspoon-Diaz

Paltrow! Witherspoon! Diaz! Beyoncé! Samberg!

The star wattage on this new film is enough to power a whole city.

"Glee" creator Ryan Murphy is taking on yet another musical adventure—this time on the big screen.

According to Deadline.com, the TV producer and sometimes movie director has brought together a cavalcade of stars for his new movie "One Hit Wonders."

The movie will focus on three singers played by Cameron Diaz and Oscar-winners Gwyneth Paltrow and Reese Witherspoon who each had a number one hit on the charts during the 90s, but soon became forgotten.

So the trio decide to form a super-group in order to recapture their fame in present day.

Paltrow, Witherspoon and Diaz in a film alone is a big deal, but add Beyonce into the mix (in an unspecified role) and things are really about to get fierce.

Further, "Saturday Night Live" cast member and all-around funnyman Andy Samberg will be joining the gang. Put all that together and you get a new, women-friendly Brat Pack.

Samberg's own little super-group The Lonely Island will be putting together the songs for this crazy venture. If their track record has proven anything, it's that they are hilarious.

We do hope this doesn't mean we'll be hearing any female versions of "D*** in a Box" though...

Murphy will be penning the script for this pet-project as well as directing it and shooting will presumably start sometime next year, after Murphy is finished directing the big screen adaptation of the play "The Normal Heart."

So what kind of music should this super-group sing? If it's anything like the songs SNL's Maya Rudolph's character used to sing on "Up All Night," this movie will be uproariously funny.

We cannot wait to see this.

Where Are They Now: The Cast Of '21 Jump Street'

0
0

21 Jump Street

It’s been over 20 years since the gang of “21 Jump Street” has been on the air, but next month we’ll be seeing a reprise of the popular TV series on the big screen.

Unfortunately for fans of the original, we won’t be seeing Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise in the drivers seat, but instead Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill will take the reigns as partners Jenko and Schmidt going undercover for a local high school drug sting.

We’re not sure how the action-comedy will fare with fans of the cop show given Ice Cube’s role as Captain Dickson; however, we are excited that original cast members Depp and Holly Robinson Peete will be making guest appearances in the film

With the remake due out March 16, here's a look back at the original cast and what they're up to now.

Holly Robinson Peete (Officer Judy Hoffs)

The only original cast member who stayed through the show's entire five seasons, Holly Robinson Peete went on to other TV series "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper" and "For Your Love."

In 1995, Peete married former NFL player Rodney Peete and the couple have four children together. After her son was diagnosed with Autism, Peete founded the non-profit HollyRod Foundation in 1997, which gives support to families with autism.

In 2010, Peete played for her organization on "Celebrity Apprentice," finishing as runner-up to singer Bret Michaels.

After being fired from CBS' "The Talk," Peete now stars on the network's hit comedy "Mike & Molly."

Dustin Nguyen (Officer HT (Harry Truman) Loki)

Dustin Nguyen is also known for "V.I.P.," starring Pamela Anderson as a mistaken bodyguard. Really.

Recently, you may have recognized him opposite Cate Blanchett in 2005's "Little Fish."

Sadly, Nguyen's wife was left a quadriplegic after a car accident in 2001. Since then, both have been a part of The Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center

Steven Williams (Captain Adam Fuller)

Despite a recurring role on "The X-Files," Steven Williams is most known as the guest stars king, appearing in 32 titles from "L.A. Heat" to "Desperate Housewives" and "Cold Case."

Currently, he stars on the CW show "Supernatural."

INSIDE KANYE WEST'S TAX RETURNS: His Charity Doesn't Actually Donate Money

0

Last week, The Daily reported that Kanye West's charity spent more than a half-million dollars in 2010—but none of that money went to actual charitable causes.

After analyzing federal tax filings, the iPad newspaper found that in 2010, the Kanye West Foundation had expenditures totaling $572,383, but the majority of that went to employee salaries and other overhead expenses.

The charity didn't even donate a single cent to an actual charity that year. And now, West's foundation is in the process of being dissolved.

Since it's easy to get bogged down in the numbers, Statista took The Daily's findings and compiled information from the foundation’s tax filings to create the below infographic explaining where Kanye West's money went and what happened to his so-called charity foundation. Complete with West's stunner shades, obviously.

Facebook ♥ Coldplay? New Ad Launch Makes It Look That Way

Coldplay

Facebook used Coldplay's Page to tout its new Timeline-oriented update to Pages.

Coldplay isn't one of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's favorite bands, if his fan page is any guide. So it's a mystery why this group was chosen to illustrate the new product.

Coldplay is, of course, hugely popular with marketers and ad agencies—its catchy, earnest, important-sounding but inoffensive ditties have scored many a commercial, most recently for Chipotle.

Facebook chose nine other brands as examples of how the new Pages can be good for advertisers. Those brands are: Chevrolet Volt, The Amazing Spider-Man, Verizon Wireless, Nike, Chevy Sonic, The Vow, Burberry, Starbucks and American Express.

The latter company also won Facebook's ad awards.

(Scroll down for a screengrab of the announcement, featuring a big product placement for Starbucks.)

AND FINALLY: Toldya! Regular readers of BI Advertising first learned of the launch of Timeline for brands back on Jan. 27. You're welcome!
