The Most Popular YouTube Videos Of 2013

$
0
0

Though we say it every year, this year feels like it went by fast. It's hard to believe the "Harlem Shake" meme came onto the scene last winter, or that Miley's jaw-dropping VMA performance took place in August.

As 2013 comes to a close, YouTube looks back on the most watched videos on its platform this year.

Here's what they found:

10. Wake Me Up - Avicii

9. Come and Get It - Selena Gomez

8. La La La - Naughty Boy featuring Sam Smith

7. Stay - Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko

6. Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell

5. Just Give Me A Reason - P!nk featuring Nate Ruess

4. Roar - Katy Perry

3. We Can't Stop - Miley Cyrus

2. Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus

The winner?

Psy Gif

If you guessed "Gagnam Style" would live on in infamy through millions of views, you were (sadly) right.

The honor of this year’s top trending music video goes to South Korea's Psy:

The Realpolitik Behind TIME Choosing Pope Francis As Person Of The Year

Pope Francis selfie

Some people find it a little shocking that TIME magazine choose Pope Francis over Edward Snowden as its person of the year. The title is supposedly given to the person who best represents the news of the year, which comes down to both making a lot of headlines and having historical significance.

And yes, there is a strong argument to be made for Snowden, ahead of other popular candidates on the public poll like Bashar al-Assad, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Miley Cyrus. After all the NSA leaker has dominated headlines since June, exposing the degree to which America spies on Americans and everyone else and spurring a global conversation about Internet privacy, though it's not clear how much his leaks will actually change the world.

But there is a strong argument to be made for the Pope as well.

There are signs that Francis, whose papacy began on March 13, is bringing about major changes at the Catholic Church, that millennia-old institution that includes 1.2 billion members today. Among them, the pope has criticized modern capitalism, refused to judge gay priestsset up a commission to advise him on protecting children from pedophile priestsand condemned religious fundamentalism.

This is in addition to his sudden popularity, with the public  lapping up stories like his announcing he once worked as a bouncer, him phoning up all sorts of random people, and him accepting a gift of an old car. It's certainly a change from the reserved, bookish Pope Benedict.

There may, however, be a much more pragmatic reason behind TIME's selection of Francis over Snowden.

Snowden, who appears in only a handful of photographs, has been covered to death, and is unpopular with very many people, is not likely to to improve newsstand sales, especially at a middle of the road publication like TIME. Pope Francis, on the other hand, has an ready-built audience of 1.2 billion Catholics around the world, with early indications are that his popularity even leading lapsed Catholics to return to the pews, and many more people who are happy to commemorate exciting developments in the Vatican. In the realpolitik world of modern magazine publishing, these are factors that can't be ignored.

Gisele 'Multitasking While Breastfeeding' Selfie Sparks Outrage Among 'Real Moms'

Yesterday, supermodel Gisele Bundchen posted this controversial Instagram selfie:

Gisele breastfeeding glam squad mom

But it's not the fact that Mrs. Tom Brady is openly breastfeeding that has people up in arms (well, mostly not— it's the fact that the supermodel hashtagged the photo "#multitasking" when she is sitting there letting a glam squad do the heavy lifting.

The full caption on the photo read:

"What would I do without this beauty squad after the 15 hours flying and only 3 hours of sleep #multitasking#gettingready"

While some, like actress Emmy Rossum, found the photo funny and spoofed the model's "having it all" image...

Emmy Rossum instagram breastfeeding gisele parody

Most people, especially moms, are not happy.

Denise Albert of TheMoms.com was on "Good Morning America" this morning and called the shot "obnoxious" and "outrageous."

"Today" show correspondent and mother of two, Natalie Morales, argued on this morning's show: "That's not multitasking! She's being multitasked upon."

"Today" Moms editor Rebecca Dube mocked the photo on the show's website. Be sure to read the caption:

Today show mom

Today.com gathered some of the best Facebook comments after posting Gisele's photo to the Kathie Lee and Hoda page (via Today.com):

Erika Douglass: Today, I nursed my 8-month-old while pushing a shopping cart... I was grocery shopping and later, did it again while I finished Christmas shopping for the family! Oh, I was also drinking an iced coffee at the same time lol

Lindsey Renick: My multitasking usually includes dressing myself and two kids, making two breakfasts and lunches, cleaning up dropped clothes and dishes, brushing out hair while I struggle shoes and coats onto kids ... Can we trade !?!

Alison Hughey Clifford: This is so hilarious! Real multitasking is breast-feeding while breaking up a fight between the older two and pouring cereal at the same time. Then change a diaper while pulling an old fruit snack out of your bra. To each their own.

Jessica Sobolewski: Even the baby is working harder in this picture than her!!!! Love you Giselle, but this is not multitasking, babe.

To be fair, many moms defended Gisele as well. Here are some of their comments:

Emily Borne: I think it a beautiful picture. She is Breastfeeding while doing her job. She gets paid to look beautiful and she does it perfectly.

Teri Hoben: Dude Leave her alone. She's taking care of her daughter while working. Great positive image.

Amber Kaiser: The issue here is that motherhood is a thankless job. We don't get the recognition, praise or kudos we deserve for being super in our everyday lives. Perhaps for her, this is multitasking, and in her world it may be difficult to do so. It's all relative. She's taking care of her child and as mothers no one can fault her for that.

But Gisele has never been one to be shy about her opinions on breastfeeding.

"Some people here (in the U.S.) think they don't have to breastfeed, and I think 'Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?'" she told Harper's Bazaar UK in 2010 after having her son, Benjamin. "I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months."

The comments created controversy, considering not all women are physically able to breastfeed and about half of new moms stop breast feeding shortly after their baby is born due to a number of circumstances.

Why Taylor Swift's Outsized Role In the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Was A Brilliant Move

$

taylor swift victoria secret

For much of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show last night, the focus was on performer Taylor Swift even more than it was on the models.

Swift opened and closed the show, interacting with models as she performed. The hour-long special even featured a segment dedicated to the models like Karlie Kloss praising the singer's talent.

This kind of attention on a performer during the show was unprecedented. Other artists, like Fall Out Boy, merely served as background music.

But by putting Swift on a pedestal, Victoria's Secret was wisely pandering to potential customers — her fans.

Swift has what is possibly the most ardent fan base of any singer. She is adored by millions of teenage girls and young women across the U.S. and worldwide  exactly the type of shopper Victoria's Secret is trying to attract.

Swift also has serious sway over her fan base.

When Abercrombie & Fitch released a shirt that said "more boyfriends than t.s.," fans protested until it was pulled from shelves. An independent shirt company designed a garment listing her love interests, and promptly received death threats.

Meanwhile, Victoria's Secret is the first big clothing brand to harness Swift's power for good. By hiring Swift to perform and treating her with utmost respect, the brand won the approval of the so-called Swifties.

Victoria's Secret will likely reap big benefits from making Swift the star of the show.

The 5 Worst TV Shows Of 2013

$
0
0

More than 30 new shows premiered this fall and while some took off — “The Blacklist,” “Masters of Sex,” and "Sleepy Hollow" — many of them fell flat.

After seeing NBC’s “Community” — a gem that is far underappreciated — on a list of terrible shows this season, we had to weigh in. Sure, season 4 wasn’t perfect with Dan Harmon gone, but it was better than a lot of the otherstuff on TV.

So which ones were the worst of the worst?  Look no further than the shows that were among the first to be pulled from networks as the fall season began.

With so many shows premiering at the same time, we bet some weren’t even around long enough for you to know they existed.

5. “Welcome to the Family” (NBC)

we are familyCancelled after 3 episodes

One of the worst-reviewed shows of the fall season, the problem here wasn’t so much the stars as it was the show that failed to give viewers a reason to tune in.

This felt like NBC’s latest attempt to recreate the success of ABC’s “Modern Family” (remember last year’s “The New Normal”), but instead came across as an “unfunny” show with “all the depth of a knock-knock joke.”

Despite getting cancelled, the show is still airing on STAR World India and Hulu.

4. “Low Winter Sun” (AMC) low winter sunCancelled after 10 episodes

This was the show AMC tried to force feed to “Breaking Bad” viewers to watch after the Vince Gilligan series came to an end, and fans weren’t having it.

Constant reminders during “Breaking Bad” would tell you to stay tuned for the show that aired afterward. After all, it was supposed to sound like the Walter White series about a good family man who "broke bad." Its tagline? “Good man. Cop. Killer.”

It didn't help that for the first few final episodes of "Breaking Bad," AMC was forcing viewers to watch "Low Winter Sun" in order to see next week's preview of White’s future escapades. That alone probably turned off a lot of potential viewers.

The show even used actors from two of the network’s top shows — Gale from “Breaking Bad” and short-lived Morgan from “The Walking Dead” — to try to appeal to viewers.

Though LWS had decent performances, it seemed like it was trying too hard to live up to the greatness of the show that aired before it and other cop shows that preceded it (“The Shield").

Ratings dipped from 2.5 million viewers to 600,000 by episode 10.

After one season will faltering ratings after “Breaking Bad” bid adieu, AMC — and many relieved viewers — said goodbye to LWS.

3. “Ironside” (NBC) ironsideCancelled after three episodes

Critics tore apart the remake of the NBC series from the late '60s about a detective in a wheelchair, calling it everything from cliched to so bad it was nearly funny.

The NYT said a main problem was defining the title character by his disability instead of making him more than that.

Rotten Tomatoes summed it up as an “unnecessary, lackluster remake that could be a decent police procedural if it wasn't so mundane and monotonous.”

The show also came under scrutiny by many because the show didn't hire a disabled actor to play the titular role.

2. “We Are Men” (CBS) we are menCancelled after two episodes

Everyone pretty much agreed that funny men Tony Shalhoub and Kal Penn’s talents were put to waste in this comedy featuring three divorced guys and another (Chris Smith) left at the altar.

The Hollywood Reporter summed it up pretty well: “‘We Are Men’ is about four single guys you wouldn't ever want to be around or be related to in any way … [it] made me feel stupid almost immediately and then bitter that I'd wasted the time.”

“We are Men” was the second cancellation of the 2013 fall season and had a collective 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

1. “Lucky 7” (ABC)

lucky 7Cancelled after two episodes.

“Lucky 7” won the award for being the first fall show to receive the axe. The premise followed seven gas station employees from Queens who won the lottery. Their winnings were supposed to dramatically change their lives forever.

Bottom line: Everyone wants to win the lottery, but no one wants to hear about the troubles people winning millions of dollars face.

What you didn’t know: Interestingly enough, the series was executive-produced in part by Steven Spielberg and was based on a British show "The Syndicate" currently going into its third season.

Bonus: “True Blood”

true blood sookie stackhouseNot a new show, but one I have continued watching for a few seasons too long.

This was quite possibly one of the worst seasons of a show I have ever watched (and I’ve been watching “Grey’s Anatomy” since it pulled that weird “Lost” stunt more than a year ago.)

Bill (Stephen Moyer) continued his reign as a supreme vampire lord while a religious cult threatened to exterminate all vamps. Meanwhile, a dark faerie was after Sookie (Anna Paquin) — who's always in some sort of danger. There were a number of other story lines. Thankfully, the series tied up a lot of plots that weren’t going anywhere (Terry’s smoke monster bit was becoming a bit much), but it landed back at square one when it introduced what looked like vampire zombies during the season finale.

HBO really had something here in the beginning. The first season and perhaps second were solid — true to the Charlaine Harris novels. It’s when the show started to take its own creative freedom  in storytelling — adding witches, and getting focused too heavily on religious anti-vampire groups and faeries — that the show lost its way.

Season 5 wasted the talent of Christopher Meloni (“Law & Order”) who had the potential to be a big villain on the series. Far gone from the series it started out as, it's no surprise HBO decided to end the vamp drama next season.

The Beastie Boys Have Countersued Pro-Girl Toymaker GoldieBlox Over The Song 'Girls'

$

The Beastie Boys have countersued the toy startup GoldieBlox for copyright infringement and are demanding profits gained from the company's recent campaign, reviving a legal battle over a GoldieBlox ad that featured a parody of the Beastie Boys song "Girls."

GoldieBlox began as the Kickstarter project of Stanford engineer Debbie Sterling in late 2012. The girls' "engineering toys" are like a cross between K'Nex and Polly Pocket, and became a hit last month after a self-produced ad went viral.

The commercial, since pulled from YouTube, featured a parody of the Beastie Boys' song "Girls," changing its tongue-in-cheek lyrics denigrating women into lyrics about girls' empowerment. Here's an upload still floating around:

The video got over eight million views before GoldieBlox, under pressure from the Beastie Boys' lawyers, removed it from their YouTube account. The toy company sued for an injunction against the Beasties, claiming that the group had threatened a lawsuit, and asked a California judge to rule that the ad did not infringe on the Beastie Boys' copyright.

The surviving members of the Beastie Boys countered with an open letter in the New York Times, claiming that the group did not threaten a lawsuit when its lawyers reached out to GoldieBlox to ask why and how the song was used without permission.

Less than a week after filing its lawsuit, GoldieBlox published a blog post asking for a truce:

beastie duo

"Since actions speak louder than words, we have already removed the song from our video," GoldieBlox said in its blogpost. "In addition, we are ready to stop the lawsuit as long as this means we will no longer be under threat from your legal team."

Adam Yauch, better known as MCA, was an original member of the Beastie Boys who passed away in May 2012. In his will, he stated that the Beasties' music was never to be used in advertising. GoldieBlox claimed ignorance and said they were willing to respect his wishes.

But the Beastie Boys decided on Tuesday that GoldieBlox was acting with "oppression, fraud, and malice," and that they deserved profits from the toy line that came as a result of the viral video. GoldieBlox claims that its sales saw a "massive increase" due to the campaign (despite some poor reviews).

The Beasties claim that they only learned of the GoldieBlox video when an ad agency that was submitting the video into a contest asked Universal Music if the toy company had the rights to "Girls." In their version of the story, that was the same day GoldieBlox sued them through a high profile Silicon Valley firm.

YouTube Has Begun A Mass Cull Of Gaming Videos — And Game Companies Hate It

YouTubeCull

YouTube has begun a mass cull of gaming videos, seriously affecting creators that make money from their channels.

Since Monday, YouTube has been striking the channels of game presenters, who often have clips of copyrighted material in their videos, reports the site Computer and Video Games. These "strikes" mean that any future revenue made from the videos gets redirected to the copyright owner and not the person that made the video.

But it's not the video game makers who are ordering these strikes.

YouTube has implemented a tougher new technology that auto-detects and flags breaches of copyright, like music or gameplay, according to CVG. Now, the video game companies are rallying to help users restore their businesses.

Representatives from Blizzard Entertainment (World of Warcraft and StarCraft developer), Deep Silver, Ubisoft, and Capcorn have issued statements, either on Twitter or to the press, urging users with flagged content to contest the strikes so that the companies can approve the videos and let the creators get their revenue back.

Check out this in-depth, personal explainer of the issue by GhostRobo, a video game presenter with more than 600,000 subscribers:

Robert  Knepper, best known for his role as smooth talking, villainous jailbird Theodore Bagwell (T-Bag) on the Fox show, has been cast in both of the final "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay" parts 1 and 2.

The news was confirmed on the official "Hunger Games" Twitter account.

Pope Francis was named TIME's Person of the Year yesterday, so obviously Jimmy Kimmel took the opportunity to prank people on the street about the decision.

Kimmel sent his "Lie Witness News" team to Hollywood Boulevard to get reactions from pedestrians who were told that Kris Jenner, Toronto 'Crack Mayor' Rob Ford, Honey Boo Boo's Mama June, and other ridiculous figures had gotten the honor.

While many agreed that Kris Jenner "deserved the award," some didn't feel the same about Anthony Weiner. Watch the funny segment below:

These Charts Show That Netflix Is Killing TV

$

For the second straight year, the number of U.S. households that own TVs has declined, according to an excellent investor note from Citi Research analyst Jason B. Bazinet and his team.

Only 112 million U.S. households now have TV, down from a high of 116 million.

Citi death of TV

Note that the decline in TV ownership comes despite an increase in the number of households.

So who is to blame? Here's one culprit: Netflix now has 33 million streaming video subscribers. That's the equivalent of one third of the 90 million-strong cable/satellite TV subscriber universe. You don't need cable TV to watch Netflix, of course.

The rise of Netflix.

Netflix citi death of TV

Amazingly, Netflix has amassed this online audience in just six years. It began streaming only in 2007.

This next chart (below) shows whose revenues are most at risk from cord-cutters who live without traditional TV and get by on internet video instead.

Unsurprisingly, Citi has a "sell" rating on Discovery Networks, the cable content provider. It's still bullish on the cable service companies themselves, however, because Bazinet believes they can offset TV losses with new broadband web subscriptions.

The 10 Christmas Songs Americans Are Listening To The Most

$
0
0

What are the most popular Christmas songs in America?

We have the answer.

A few years ago, Billboard created a chart exclusively devoted to Christmas songs. It measures the volume  of people who've been exposed to the song on the radio (Billboard does not provide exact figures, only the ranking).

So here is your American Christmas canon as of the week of Holiday Season 2013:

10. "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" By John Lennon (1971)

There's some debate about how much snark is in this song. We'd like to think John was above using children in that way.

9."Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)" By Trans-Siberian Orchestra (1995)

Okay.

8. "White Christmas" By Bing Crosby (1942)

Apocryphally, Irving Berlin, who wrote this song, quipped to his secretary upon its conception, "Grab your pen and take down this song. I just wrote the best song I've ever written — heck, I just wrote the best song that anybody's ever written!"

7. "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" By Andy Williams (1963)

This is not a good song.

6. "Feliz Navidad" By Jose Feliciano (1970)

Did not expect to see this one here.

5. "A Holly Jolly Christmas" By Burl Ives (1965)

If John Lennon's song has slipped into non-irony, the reverse has happened to this song.

4.  "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)" By Nat King Cole (1946)

King. Cole.

3. "Jingle Bell Rock" By Bobby Helms (1957)

This is not that version, but it may have salvaged this song.

2. "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" By Brenda Lee (1958)

Some one hit wonders laugh all the way to the bank. Brenda Lee is only 69 years old, and is LOL'ing hard right now at whatever you may think of this song.

1.  All I Want For Christmas Is You/Mariah Carey (1994)

The last great, original Christmas song.

Many were outraged by the sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela's memorial Tuesday.

South Africa's deaf federation claimed the man was making up his own signs rather than speeches being delivered.

What was the man actually signing?

Last night on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" the host brought out a professional sign language interpreter to set the record straight.

You can start watching the translation around the 1:35 mark below:

We're not sure "Breaking Bad" on ice would ever take off, but if it did, this is probably what it would look like.

Sharidan Williams-Sotelo, an assistant editor on the AMC series, put together a figure skating tribute to the show.

You'll recognize her work from the awesome Ozymandias promo for the series return earlier this summer.

If you're still coping with the loss of one of TV's best shows, this should come as a warm welcome.

What do a "Glee" star, "Fast and Furious" actor, and One Direction boy bander have in common?

They were all the subject of the top three entertainment tweets of 2013.

Sadly, two of three had to do with the deaths of two actors taken too soon. The third was about the end of a young star's teenage years.

Twitter compiled the three most retweeted tweets of 2013 — something they call "Golden Tweets." See who was the most talked-about on Twitter below:

1. Lea Michele's first public acknowledgment of the death of her "Glee" co-star and boyfriend Cory Monteith was the most-retweeted Tweet of the year. The tweet, which had an accompanying photo of the pair, was retweeted more than 408,000 times from 133 countries.

2. Paul Walker’s team tweeted a statement confirming the actor’s passing. It was retweeted 400,367 times as fans from around the world came together in mourning.

3. This Niall Horan tweet is sad in a different way than the above two. The One Direction band member's tweet was retweeted more than 408,000 times from 133 countries. We're not sad that Niall is ending his age of innocence, but because so many people cared so much.

'SNL' Held Secret Auditions For Black Female Comedians

SNL black female comedians audition

"Saturday Night Live" has faced criticism this season for adding six new cast members  all white males with the exception of one female.

Out of 16 "SNL" cast members, currently only three are comedians of color  Kenan Thompson, Jay Pharaoh, and the Iranian Nasim Pedrad.

The issue has gotten so bad that Thompson refuses to dress in drag until the show hires a black female cast member.

Despite "SNL" mocking the race issue in recent sketches, it appears Executive Producer Lorne Michaels is actually trying to do something about the problem.

A group of black female comedians and actresses in Los Angeles tweeted recently about a secret showcase "SNL" held in Los Angeles at the Groundlings Theater.

Actress Bresha Webb told the Jasmine BRAND about the showcase:

"The audition came about from an inside source from SNL. I don’t think any of us had a clue about the showcase until two days prior. It was an awesome opportunity even though it was such a short notice but, if you stay ready you ain’t gotta get ready and we were READY! Lol But we were all honored to be selected."

Webb added, "I found out that I was on a list of funny women in the industry and there was an opportunity for me to audition for SNL last summer, but I was filming 'Love that Girl' and now the opportunity has represented itself."

Webb documented her audition experience via Instagram:

"This is what happens after us talented black women showcase for SNL we thank God and praise him for the opportunity and the blessing! So inspired and we all killed that ish tonight! @gabrielledennis@simoneshepherd @tiffanyhaddish @bethpayne@damirrabrunson and more I gotta find them on IG! Lol"
