nelson mandela daughtersMandela daughters ask that film's premiere go on; audience told of death during the credits

LONDON (AP) — People attending the London premiere of a new film about Nelson Mandela were told of his death as the closing credits rolled.

Stopping the screening of "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" was discussed, but Mandela's daughters asked that the premiere continue, a film spokesman said Thursday night.

Producer Anant Singh announced Mandela's death once the film was over, and he called for a moment of silence.

The audience included the film's stars and Prince William and his wife, Kate.

"It was extremely sad and tragic news," William said upon leaving the film.

Zindzi Mandela, Mandela's daughter, also was there. When asked on the red carpet on her way into the premiere about her father, she had said, "My father is fine."

Nelson Mandela was 95.

lebron jamesLeBron James confirms he'll co-star in movie "Ballers" with Kevin Hart

CHICAGO (AP) — LeBron James is taking his game to the silver screen.

The Miami Heat superstar confirmed reports before Thursday's game against the Chicago Bulls that he will co-star with Kevin Hart in the comedy "Ballers." Hart plays the brother of an NBA star who gets a chance to prove himself at a fantasy basketball camp in Miami.

James says the opportunity to work with Hart was a product of their "friendship" and "mutual respect." He says the role is "something I could relate to, as far as fantasy basketball and guys wanting to be basketball players" who "never had really had the great opportunity to be a professional athlete."

Republicans Now Getting Their Ideas From 30 Rock

After reading my piece about the National Republican Campaign Committee's "Happy Holidays is what liberals say" shirt, a friend texted me: "You didn't call out that shirt for being a less funny ripoff of 30 Rock??!"

She's right.

In "Christmas Attack Zone," Episode 10 of Season 5 of 30 Rock, Avery Jessup (Elizabeth Banks) and Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) have this exchange:

Jack: What Christmas card did we end up sending out?
Avery: Happy Holidays... [opens card] is what terrorists say. Merry Christmas, Avery and Jack.

There you have today's Republican Party: like a parody of itself, only less funny.

Speaking of which, the NRCC is now selling "Happy Holidays is what liberals say" as a mug. It's still printed in comic sans.

NBC Crushed It With Its Live 'Sound Of Music' Broadcast

carrie underwood sound of music

Say what you will about a "Sound of Music" remake, but Carrie Underwood's performance in NBC's live broadcast of the musical was a HUGE ratings winner for the network.

18.5 million viewers tuned in to watch Underwood in "The Sound of Music Live."

The special gave NBC its best (non-sports) Thursday night since 16.2 million tuned in for the "ER" finale April 2, 2009.

It was also the network's most-watched Thursday since 25.4 million watched the "Frasier" finale in 2004.

"The Sound of Music" was up against CBS' ratings winner "The Big Bang Theory" in the 8 p.m. slot and ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" at 9 p.m.

Surprisingly, those two shows (maybe as a result) had some of the lowest of their seasons.

15.3 million tuned in for the "The Big Bang Theory" at 8 p.m. while 7.5 million watched "Grey's Anatomy" on ABC an hour later.

It was the first time NBC aired a live musical in 50 years.

brian stewie family guy

Fans of "Family Guy" were really upset when the Fox series killed off the family dog Brian at the end of November.

Fans were so outraged that a petition was created to bring back the character. Currently, — it has gathered more than 128,000 supporters

Well, it looks like that may not have been necessary. As many suggested, it doesn't look like Brian the dog is staying off the show.

TVLine believes he'll appear in the upcoming December 15 episode, "Christmas Guy" where a plot synopsis says Stewie comes up with a plan to get "the one and only thing he wants for Christmas."

So, will Stewie simply fix his broken time machine and save his dog?

Another sign that Brian will be back is from an October story from Entertainment Weekly in which "Family Guy" executive producer Steve Callaghan says "SNL" veteran Maya Rudolph will play a love interest for the dog's character in an episode next fall.

They rapped lyrics like ,"I wanna be a pilot so I bought a jump suit. Probably shoula washed it, smells like jet fuel. But it was 99-cents."

"Tonight is our night, thanks for serving our country. So put your hands up like the ceiling can't hold us."

QUAALUDES, HOOKERS, AND PENNY STOCKS: 'The Wolf Of Wall Street' Is Epic

$
0
0

leonardo dicaprio wolf of wall street

"The Wolf of Wall Street" is going to be a monstrous hit.

It is the kind of movie that will inspire (mostly) men of a certain age (I am guessing 15 to 55) to memorize scenes and forever trade their favorite lines over and over. I won't give any of them away. But this movie will enter the pantheon of Martin Scorsese classics like "Goodfellas" and "The Departed."

I was lucky enough to see a screening at the Director's Guild Theater on 57th Street on Thursday night. This is not a movie review.

Just an early heads-up that this movie is epic. And it will be huge.

Leonardo DiCaprio compares "The Wolf of Wall Street" to a "modern-day Caligula" in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. And he's not far off. There's gratuitous t&a. So much so that my wife Natasha asked me why there were so many orgy scenes. I didn't have a good answer. There's so much nudity and sex that I was surprised to learn that the film had EVEN MORE in an earlier version  but additional sex scenes were cut to avoid an NC-17 rating. So prepare yourself for flesh.

Then there are the drugs.

From Quaaludes to cocaine, crack and booze  the drug scenes are exquisitely staged. Drug use fuels the whole movie, especially 'ludes. DiCaprio's Jordan Belfort character (the movie is based on Belfort's memoir of the same name) seems to thrive on 'ludes  a tranquilizer that you'd be hard-pressed to find in the U.S. today. But the drugs act as a fuse for all of the Wall Street selling that Belfort oversees at his firm in the late 1980s and early '90s.

The movie is also incredibly long. I am going to guess that the cut we saw was almost 3 hours.

There's more to this movie though than sex, drugs and 165 minutes.

DiCaprio revels in his role as Belfort  a cult-like figure who inspires his sales team to unload crappy penny stocks to unwitting buyers. There's a scene at a country club that will forever be associated with the Great Actor Leo. He is so convincing that the audience last night didn't know whether to laugh. I couldn't. But many people did.

And Jonah Hill  in the role of Belfort's business partner — plays it straight, to a point, and is memorable as soon as he comes on screen. He kills it in his second, third, and fourth scenes too.

Surprisingly, it's less a movie about Wall Street and more about salesmen, posing as brokers. (And I mean men. Hundreds of them. Women are few and far between unless they're naked.) They happen to be selling penny stocks, but might as well be selling fake real estate plots. Or encyclopedias. They are selling. Period. Because people want to buy.

Scorsese focuses hard on all the big-time sins: greed, gluttony, lust, envy and pride. Add it all up and it makes it hard to look away.

Wall Street will be pleased.

The film will be released on Christmas Day. (You should all go see it.)

New York Fashion Week Is About To Get Way More Exclusive

Burberry runway

Fans of Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week take note: The February 2014 event will be markedly different than in years past with more up-to-date venues and an amped up exclusivity level.

Over the last decade, the show has become crowded with fashion bloggers, street photographers, and others with little connection to the industry. But IMG Fashion, the company that puts together the annual show, tells The Wall Street Journal all of that is about to change.

"It was becoming a zoo," Catherine Bennett, the senior vice president and managing director at IMG Fashion Events and Properties, said to the WSJ. "What used to be a platform for established designers to debut their collections to select media and buyers has developed into a cluttered, often cost-prohibitive and exhausting period for our industry to effectively do business."

The media list will be cut by 20%, according to the WSJ, with only those considered "of value to the designers" receiving invites. The major fashion VIP guests who are welcome will also have more backstage access for interviews, and even their own private green rooms (we assume so that Anna Wintour doesn't have to wait among the hoi polloi).

Otherwise, the shows will be streamed live on the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week broadcast, so if you no longer make the cut, you can still pretend you're there.

Read more about the new updated show and venues over at The Wall Street Journal.

Ron Burgundy Peyton Manning

ESPN cancelled Ron Burgundy hosting SportsCenter on Thursday, but they released the full uncensored interview with quarterback Peyton Manning online.

Manning's reactions were absolutely priceless (See the full video below).

Here are the best quotes from Mr. Burgundy:

(Checking that it's Peyton Manning at the beginning of the interview)

Ron Burgundy: I just want to make sure its you Peyton I remember once before the 1978 holiday bowl I was interviewing the great Phil McConkey and instead I was talking to the back-up kicker, I felt like a fool.

(On Eli Manning's mustache)

RB: Oh I saw that, it did not look good. It looked like his upper lip was caked in a mixture of liquid dog crap and cocaine.

(On former St. Louis Rams defensive tackle Merlin Olsen)

RB: Regardless, I was thinking of the time I was tackled by Merlin in his bungalow in Burbank, what a night. You know Merlin and I were very close.

(On calling audibles at the line)

RB: Oh sure sure, oh I know I played a little in my day, San Diego State scout team quarterback. I used to yell "check off, check off!" all the time. No clue what it meant but when I saw someone on that defense move I yelled "check off! check off!"

(On Peyton secret sister "Gloria Manning")

RB: So there isn't any truth to the rumor of a Manning sister Gloria Manning, who weighed 285 pounds as a freshman in high school and ran a 4.3 40 and was frankly a better football player than all of you?

Elton John Tells Russia To End Gay Discrimination At His Moscow Concert

British pop icon Elton John at his Moscow concert on Friday called on Russia to end discrimination against gays and lesbians, the Interfax news agency reported.

The openly gay singer said he was "sad to learn" about a Russian "anti-gay law" which bans what it calls homosexual propaganda to minors, Interfax reported.

"He called for renouncing all discrimination, including that based on non-traditional sexual orientation," the agency said, using an expression in Russia for describing homosexuality.

According to Interfax and several messages on social networks, John dedicated his concert to Vladislav Tornovoi, a 23-year-old man tortured to death in May in Volgograd, in southwest Russia, apparently for being gay.

That sordid crime raised an outcry from the gay community and gay rights activists.

John was the first major Western star known for strong support of gay rights to play in Russia since President Vladimir Putin in June signed a national law banning "propaganda of homosexuality" to minors.

The loosely-worded law, aggressively lobbied by conservative lawmakers, can be used to ban any gay rights event, critics say.

John, 66, publicly announced his homosexuality in 1988 and is in a civil partnership. He and his partner, David Furnish, have two children born to a surrogate mother. The singer is a major backer of programmes to help those with AIDS. In 2009, Ukraine refused to let him adopt an HIV-positive toddler.

Before Russia's national law was signed, US pop stars Madonna and Lady Gaga last year used concerts in Saint Petersburg to speak out on stage against local legislation that went in the same direction.

The promoters of Lady Gaga's concert were fined last month by a Saint Petersburg court under a child protection law which includes a ban on gay propaganda.

Russia decriminalised homosexuality in 1993, but its medical institutions continued to class homosexuality as a mental disorder until 1999.

Russian society remains deeply homophobic, with a survey by the Levada independent polling centre in March finding that 34 percent thought homosexuality was an illness that should be treated.

Indiana Jones

Disney has acquired the rights from Paramount Pictures for the future of the Indiana Jones franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

You know what that means?

More Indy films are on the way!

Disney hasn't announced a new film yet, but the deal has Paramount continuing to receive compensation for future movies.

Disney originally retained rights for the Indiana Jones property when buying Lucasfilm last October for $4 billion.

Paramount will still retain all rights for the first four "Indiana Jones" installments.

The big rumor earlier this fall was that Indy actor Harrison Ford said he would return for "Star Wars: Episode VII" if Disney and Lucasfilm went forward with another "Indiana Jones" movie.

Currently, Disney is working on the "Star Wars" sequel for a 2015 release.

The fourth film, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," though widely criticized by fans, made $783 million at the box office worldwide.

Legendary Bob Dylan Guitar Sells For Nearly $1 Million At Auction

bob dylan fender guitar

An electric guitar on which Bob Dylan performed a legendary set at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 sold for a record $965,000 at an auction in New York on Friday, Christie's announced.

The price for the 1964 Fender Stratocaster smashed its pre-sale estimate of $300,000-$500,000 and made it the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction, Christie's said.

The identity of the private buyer was not revealed.

The auction house also put under the hammer five sets of lyrics dating back to 1965-66, but sold only one -- an early version of "I Wanna Be Your Lover" called "Midnight Suit" -- for $20,000.

The sale came just days after it was revealed that the legendary American singer has been charged in France for inciting hatred by comparing Croats to Nazis in remarks to Rolling Stone magazine.

Dylan, 72, was charged with the offense during a visit to Paris last month after the comments made last year sparked a complaint from the Council of Croats in France (CRICCF).

"If you got a slave master or Klan in your blood, blacks can sense that. That stuff lingers to this day. Just like Jews can sense Nazi blood and the Serbs can sense Croatian blood," Dylan was quoted as saying in an answer to a question about race relations in the United States.

Dylan was informed of the charges while in Paris for three concerts -- a visit during which the French government also awarded him its prestigious Legion d'honneur.

The charge against him carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a fine of up to $61,600, although usually penalties are far smaller, sometimes only symbolic.

Dylan has not commented on the charges.

His three-song electric set at the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island saw the then 24-year-old evolve from folk-protest singer into an enigmatic rock legend.

Rolling Stone described it as one of the most notable events in music history, but his folk fans were furious.

The guitar and lyrics are in the possession of a daughter of the pilot who flew the private jet used by Dylan and his band in the months after the performance.

Born Robert Allen Zimmerman in 1941, Dylan was the voice of a generation and a giant in the history of American music.

Sony released the complete series Tuesday. Naturally, as huge fans of the AMC show, we pre-ordered the set to have it delivered release day.

It comes with a lot of great extras — a never-before-seen two-hour making of the series, a collector's coin, and even a Los Pollos Hermanos apron(!) — however, we were really impressed with the unique packaging of the discs.

It's clear an immense amount of detail went into making this box set feel special for fans.

Forget everything you know about regular DVD cases. Each season is held together by magnets — a clear reference to the series.

Better yet, you may notice a bunch of strange images drawn on each season's disc set.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The advocacy group for the adult film industry has called for another moratorium on filming after an actor tested positive for HIV for the third time this year

The Free Speech Coalition said in a statement Friday that an adult performer came up positive at one of the group's testing centers, and called for a halt to filming while all possible partners are tested. Such moratoriums aren't binding, but generally bring compliance within the industry.

The group did not release the name or any details about the performer.

In August an actress who worked under the name Cameron Bay tested positive and set off a scare within the industry. Her on-screen partners were medically cleared but off-screen boyfriend and fellow performer Rod Daily announced he had also contracted HIV.

The 38-year-old was booked into the Downtown Detention Center on Sunday on charges of assault and wrongs to minors. Police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez tells The Associated Press she can't release any details until she speaks with a domestic violence detective.

Ralston was hiking in 2003 when he became trapped by a boulder and was forced to cut off his own arm to free himself. He went on to detail his struggles in a book, and his story was later adapted into the movie "127 Hours."

Booking documents don't indicate if Ralston has an attorney. He's scheduled to appear in court Monday.
