Katie Couric

Katie Couric is leaving ABC News for Yahoo after being personally wooed by Marissa Mayer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Couric joined ABC News less than three years ago, taking a $40 million deal that included her daytime talk show and a role at ABC News.

The new Yahoo deal, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, "would be a much more high-profile endeavor with Couric hosting a newsmaker interview program that would be featured on the site's highly trafficked home page."

Couric is not the first high-profile media star to receive the Mayer-treatment. Yahoo recently poached renowned tech columnist David Pogue from the New York Times.

These 'Shark Tank' Hopefuls Nearly Lost An Amazing Deal Because They Got Greedy

When a husband and wife team walked into the tank on the most recent episode of ABC's reality pitch show "Shark Tank," the investors didn't seem t0o interested in Rick and Melissa Hinnant's lace sock business.

That was until the Hinnants announced that their company Grace and Lace had made $800,000 in 2012 and $1.25 million this year to date.

With high profit margins and no money so far spent on advertisements, the investors were suddenly quite interested.

The pitch got intense, however, when investor Robert Herjavec offered the Hinnants exactly what they wanted — $175,000 for 10% equity in their company. The catch: Herjavec wanted them to accept or decline the offer immediately, before hearing how the other Sharks might counter.

"I don't think it's fair to me ... I'd like an answer now," said Herjavec. "I've given you exactly what you're asking for. I'm a very nice guy, but don't mistake my kindness for weakness."

Would the entrepreneurs jump on a great offer or get greedy, hoping a better one might come along?

That's when investor Kevin O'Leary warned the Hinnants about the "bone in mouth" disease: when a dog looks into a pond, sees his reflection, and drops the bone he has for the reflection of the bone in the pond. The result is that the dog loses the only bone he has.

Indeed, the Hinnants hesitated and ended up losing the offer from Herjavec, but they had their eye on investor Barbara Corcoran from the beginning. Ultimately, they survived the "bone in mouth" disease and struck the deal they wanted with Corcoran.

Bob Odenkirk Tells Us How Working On 'Breaking Bad' Is Similar To His Funny New Film 'Nebraska'

$

0

nebraska bruce dernWhile "The Hunger Games" is set to dominate the box office this weekend, there's another great alternative in theaters you may not be familiar with.

"Nebraska" follows the story of Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) and his son David (Will Forte) who travel from Montana to Nebraska — against the son's wishes — to collect the father's $1 million winnings. The catch?

Grant hasn't won anything. Rather, he's received a notice from Mega Sweepstakes Marketing (think Publisher's Clearing House) that many people receive. The difference is he actually believes he's won and nothing is stopping him from making his journey to collect.

The dramedy brings them to a pit stop in the father's hometown of Hawthorne, Neb. Underneath the lottery story is a poignant tale about family, self-discovery, and self-worth.

The film premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival where Dern won the Best Actor Award. It's in black and white, which may throw some off from the format, but there's no other way we would have wanted to see it.

We spoke with one of the stars of the film, Bob Odenkirk ("Breaking Bad"), who plays Woody's other son, Ross, to discuss what it was like on set, working with Payne and the film's stars, Dern and Forte.

Business Insider: The story is largely about family and the relationship between a father and son. Did it make you think about the dynamics of your own family or your relationship between yourself and your kids?

will forte bruce dern bob odenkirk june squibb nebraskaBob Odenkirk: "I think about my dad who was an alcoholic and who I didn't have a very easy relationship with and still don't. Well, he passed away, but it never ended well. So I think about that and I think about also ... the dinner scene where the whole family and extended family are sitting around and talking. Some of those conversations with the family where they're talking about the car ... All that reminded me of my actual family at Thanksgiving dinners ... just the kind of conversations you'd have sometimes ... meaningless and funny and awkward and people not really listening to each other."

BI: What did you think of the film being in black and white?

Odenkirk: "I initially thought that's interesting. I know black and white can look very beautiful ... so I trusted him [Payne]. When I was off set, I took a look at the black and white on the monitor, I couldn't believe how great it looked. Then, when I saw it in the theater ... it really knocked me out and made me think of Ansel Adams and Walker Evans."

BI: You and Will Forte, who plays your brother in "Nebraska," are friends in real life. There's a scene in the movie where you two steal an air compressor. I have to imagine there were some hijinks on set.

bob odenkirk nebraska

Odenkirk: "[heavy laughter] We stole three other air compressors while we were there [jokingly]. If you mention an air compressor in Nebraska, I've got it."

"You know what [Will and I] did ... we're good friends and we love each other and we spent all our time listening to Bruce Dern and June Squibb tell stories of their amazing experiences in show business. Bruce told me stories about walking Marilyn Monroe home. He talked about the early days which Roger Cormanhe talked about his childhood and his godmother Eleanor Roosevelt. His godfather was Adlai Stevenson. He was related to Archibald MacLeish. He comes from a renowned family and so he talked about his family. We all talked about our families. Mostly, we spent our time off screen talking about Illinois and our families."

BI: In the film, you play an anchorman — you're the hotshot celebrity of the family. Did that role also transfer over into real life? You have six siblings, right?

Odenkirk: "Yes, I do. I'm nothing special in my family. My brother Bill is a director and writer for "The Simpsons." My brothers and sisters are tickled by the fact that I'm in show business, but it doesn't give me a whole lot of points. It's OK with me. We're all equals."

BI: What was different about working with Payne than Vince Gilligan on "Breaking Bad"?

bob odenkirk nebraska "Oh they're very similar. They have a confidence in their writing and in their material and then how they're handling it. So they basically show you where to be and then they let you do it without a lot of input. They let the actor present their interpretation and then after you've done it once or twice, then they might say something like, 'Give me this' or 'Make it a little funnier or make it angrier.'"

"They may give you a very small note or a very specific note maybe about a moment in whatever it is you just said or did and that's all they do. They give you little moments and little turns and they back off and give you room to play the part."

"That's how it was on 'Nebraska' and that's how it is in 'Breaking Bad.' So, it's wonderful. Actors don't like to be manipulated too much. They want to be allowed to discover and present their character and be their character and just lose it in that moment."

BI: Is there a favorite moment you had while filming?

bob odenkirk nebraskaOdenkirk: "Well, I loved stealing the compressor with Will. That was a great funny moment. The dinner table scene is hilarious and I loved every single actor at that table and how they presented their lines. It just was so damn funny that little woman who says, 'What are you gonna do with all the money Woody? ... What's the very first thing?'"

"Quite a few of the people in the family scenes were Nebraskans who aren't actors. They never acted before in their lives."

"Plus, I'm kinky and he loves to role play in the bedroom," she adds. "We do this one where I pretend I'm a sexy French maid who wanders onto his property, and he's a man who has every right to defend himself."

Next up, Florida Police Chief Mike Davis makes an appearance in which he lists all of the terrible things about Florida, like mosquitoes and the band Limp Bizkit.

Here's The 'Hunger Games' Actress Who Randomly Strips Naked In An Elevator

$

Watch out Jennifer Lawrence, you may have some competition from another fiery brunette.

Though Lawrence captivated, there was another young actress who stole the screen during “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”

Enter Jena Malone who plays axe-wielding Johanna Mason from District 7 in the film.

We’ve been waiting to see Malone’s character make her grand entrance on screen since we knew the films were being made.

Why?

Because she has one of the best character entrances in any book.

Ahead of the 75th Hunger Games in which old victors are participating, she steps into an elevator with Katniss (Lawrence), her pal/lover Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), and their mentor Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), and starts to undress completely.

She’s never met Katniss or Peeta before. Haymitch knows her from The 71st Hunger Games. But there she goes, just starting to strip while making small talk with the three (or Peeta for the most part).

It was one of the best scenes in the movie.

Why did she do this?

It’s not as random as it may appear in the film.

In the book, Peeta explains Johanna does this to see Katniss’ reaction. Like the other victors Katniss has met, they’ve all been teasing her — another man, Chaff, stole a kiss on the lips from her upon meeting — since they know she’s the most naive and pure of them all.

It’s all in good fun. Katniss just noticed it with Johanna.

Who is Jena Malone?

jena maloneYou’ll recognize Malone from “Pride & Prejudice,” “Into the Wild,” and last year’s acclaimed “Hatfields & McCoys” series that ran on History.

She didn’t just steal that scene in “The Hunger Games.” Malone lit up the screen every time she appeared on screen. Whether she was screaming defiantly at the Capitol and President Snow in Stanley Tucci’s presence on a stage or while pacing heatedly along a makeshift beach in the games, her energy was well spent in the sequel.

Returning to the elevator scene, I’ve always wondered what Katniss’ face looked like during the elevator scene while reading the series. Jennifer Lawrence doesn’t disappoint in the film.

The scene is being passed around Tumblr right now.

If you want to see one of the best scenes from the film, mini spoilers below.

TV Is Dying, And Here Are The Stats That Prove It

Death of TV Gif

The TV business is having its worst year ever.

Audience ratings have collapsed: Aside from a brief respite during the Olympics, there has been only negative ratings growth on broadcast and cable TV since September 2011, according to Citi Research.

Media stock analysts Craig Moffett and Michael Nathanson recently noted, "The pay-TV industry has reported its worst 12-month stretch ever." All the major TV providers lost a collective 113,000 subscribers in Q3 2013. That doesn't sound like a huge deal — but it includes internet subscribers, too.

Broadband internet was supposed to benefit from the end of cable TV, but it hasn't.

In all, about 5 million people ended their cable and broadband subs between the beginning of 2010 and the end of this year.

TV on firePeople are unplugging.

Time Warner Cable, for instance, lost 306,000 TV subscribers in Q3, and 24,000 broadband web subscribers, too.

And Tom Rutledge, CEO of Charter Communications, told Wall Street analysts he was "surprised" that 1.3 million of his 5.5 million customers don't want TV — just broadband internet. "Our broadband-only growth has been greater than I thought it would be," he said.

The following charts show the evidence that cable TV is dying, and that people are also unplugging from broadband internet service.

Cable TV ratings are sinking.

Cable TV ratings are in an historic slump. Note that the "growth" line, as charted by Citi analysts Jason B. Bazinet and Joshua P. Carlson, is persistently below zero.

tv ratings cable citinielsen tv ratingsFewer people are watching TV.

This is the macro problem: Ratings are falling across the board. They have been for years.

It's not too surprising that broadcast TV ratings are down. The major networks have faced increasing competition for years from niche-interest cable channels and the better-quality programming on places like AMC and HBO.

But ratings for both cable and the broadcast networks are down.

Even ratings for some major TV events are in decline.

People just don't watch the World Series like they used to. Recently, viewer decline is led by young people, according to Business Insider's Sports Page:

World Series TV Ratings

It's the same with basketball.

Maybe people prefer the NBA to the MLB? Turns out that today's big stars don't grab TV eyeballs the way they used to either.

NBA Finals TV Ratings

For the first time ever, the number of cable TV subscribers at major providers is about to dip below 40 million.

Cable TV subscribers ISI GroupSo why are ratings in decline?

We're at the beginning of a major historical shift from watching TV to watching video — including TV shows and movies — on the internet or on mobile devices.

This is going to hurt cable TV providers.

Nearly 5 million cable TV subscribers have gone elsewhere in the last five years. The number of subscribers remaining could sink below 40 million later this year, according to this data from ISI Group, an equity research firm (at right).

Cable and broadband companies are increasingly unable to retain customers.

This chart (below) is the most important chart in this set: It shows the number of net subscriber additions across all types of customers — cable TV, broadband internet and landline phone.

The cable and broadband subscriber business is seasonal. The net number of people leaving or adding services changes with the seasons, because people like to move house in the fall.

It used to be that up to 500,000 new subscriptions would be added across all companies in any given quarter. But now, cable and internet companies are lucky if they get any new subscribers at all. Increasingly, the industry loses subscribers rather than gaining them, according to this data from One Touch Intelligence:

cable tv subscribers

For the first time ever, less than half of subscribers at the major broadband companies now subscribe to cable TV.

What's happening is that people are giving up on cable TV as a standalone product, and the market is shifting in favor of telco companies like AT&T and Verizon who offer TV as a package with high-speed internet access, according to media equity analysts at ISI Group. (Direct Broadcast Satellite appears to be remaining steady, in part because its customers often live in more rural areas and have fewer alternatives.)

cable tv subscribers

Here is how individual TV providers are affected.

It's not an across-the-board collapse. But this is what you would expect to see during a technological sea-change: The weaker players are crumbling. The stronger players are picking up some of the pieces ... but how long can they also resist the tide?

Cable tv company net adds subscribers

Fewer households actually have TV.

One macro-economic factor behind the decline is that fewer houses actually have TV.

These charts, from Citi Research, show that the total "Nielsen TV Universe" — the number of people who watch TV — is declining. Note that the number of U.S. households is still growing, but growth in the number of households with cable TV is declining.

tv ratings nielsen households

Fewer households have TV because they are watching video on mobile devices instead.

Here's the big picture: People are spending more of their time on mobile, and less of their time on TV:

Slide079

Mobile video is booming.

Even though iPhone and Android phones still struggle to show video seamlessly, the amount of video seen on mobile devices is going through the roof. About 40% of all YouTube traffic comes from mobile.

Slide030

Tablets are stealing prime time, the period we used to devote to TV.

In the media industry, iPads and other tablets are sometimes called "vampire" media — they come out at night.

Slide039

Slowly, the money is following the eyeballs. It is shifting from TV to digital media of all kinds.

This research from Macquarie Capital shows a giant mismatch between where people spend their time and where advertising money is spent. People spend more time with digital media than TV now. Ad dollars are likely to follow that shift in the long run, Macquarie says.

Death of TV cable adsAd revenue increases are masking the macro decline of TV.

The collapse of TV is having a counter-intuitive effect on TV ad sales: prices are going up, even though the number of commercials is going down.

The reason? It's still really, really difficult to gather a large, mass audience in any kind of media, mobile or otherwise. The Super Bowl — on TV — is the only media property than can reach more than 100 million people in a three-hour stretch. That scarcity of large audiences makes TV's dwindling-but-still-big audience increasingly valuable.

tv audience ratings

The TV business may actually be addicted to the very thing that is killing it.

tv suicide street art 2 Even though cable TV has had its worst year ever, cable TV revenues are still rising because companies are charging the dwindling number of customers more in subscription fees. According to analysts Craig Moffett and Michael Nathanson, those higher prices are "part of the problem" that pushes out poor subscribers — losing the TV business even more eyeballs:

"Of course, the fact that pay-TV revenue is still rising smartly is part of the problem ... We have always argued that cord-cutting is an economic phenomenon, not a technological one. ... Pay-TV revenue growth reflects rapid pay-TV pricing growth and that is precisely the problem. Rapidly rising prices are squeezing lower-income consumers out of the ecosystem."

The market does not care that the TV audience is declining.

This chart (below) shows a basket of cable TV stocks over the last year. Not bad!

cable tv stocks

Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt said in his last-ever conference call that the cable business has been 'in denial.'

Glenn BrittBritt, who is retiring because he has been diagnosed with cancer, told analysts on his Q3 2013 earnings call that he thought the cable business had spent too many years complacently dismissing the competition:

Regarding competition, well, duh, we have competition. I say that because when I first got this job 12 years ago, I think the cable industry as a whole, including our company, was in denial that we had real, viable competition. And I still hear some of my peers saying dismissive things about our competitors. And certainly, each of them has strengths and weaknesses, just as we do. However, they are around to stay, and we need to keep getting better at competing.

People who are unplugging from both cable TV and broadband internet are likely going to free wifi.

So if fewer people are watching cable TV and fewer people are paying for Internet service, does that mean that we just don't care about watching our favorite shows anymore?

Not necessarily.

Free wifi — at work, in coffee shops, and on campuses — is making it easier for consumers to get the shows, movies and videos they want without subscribing to any kind of cable or broadband service

All of Starbucks offers free wifi, for instance.

Fifty-seven cities in the U.S., including Los Angeles, offer free wifi. Facebook and Cisco have joined to offer free wifi access to customers in any business who check in to Facebook. Facebook’s original free wifi test included just 25 stores in the Bay Area. The company has now expanded it to 1,000.

For some people, there is just no need for a cable or pipe to deliver the internet or TV to their residence specifically, as long as they are within range of a free wifi hotspot.

This chart shows the free wifi hotspots available in Jersey City, N.J. Most reasonably dense areas of the U.S. look like this now, according to Bright House Networks, a company that tracks and maps wifi hotspots:

People Are Comparing ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ To ‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’

hunger games catching fire katniss jennifer lawrence

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” came out this weekend and some are comparing the second film in a four-part series of adaptations to arguably the best “Star Wars” film, “The Empire Strikes Back.”

What?

When the first film came out, people obviously compared “The Hunger Games” to “Battle Royale.” Both works pitted children fighting against each other to the death.

Understandable.

But “Star Wars”?

I wasn't convinced at first — I come from a family of pretty big “Star Wars” fans — but the more I think about it, I can see the parallels.

Are people reaching?

“Star Wars” is about a ragtag group of rebels trying to take down the evil empire. “The Hunger Games” is about a group of rebels trying to take down the Capitol.

star wars darth vader

donald sutherland catching fire hunger gamesOnce you get past the kid-killing in the original “Hunger Games,” you realize this isn’t a story about killing children, but one about rebellion. At the end of “Catching Fire” you learn the victors of the previous “Hunger Games” are conspiring to secretly take down the Capitol and its president, and Katniss will be their leader, their Luke Skywalker if you will (or at the least, their symbol).

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character Plutarch Heavensbee is being compared to Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams).

Whose side is Heavensbee on anyway? Much like Calrissian, Heavensbee originally works with “the empire” (in this case the Capitol), using them for their tools, before ditching them for the rebellion.

They even have their own ship! (It’s no Millennium Falcon, but it will do.)

The endings of both films are similar.

The ending of "Empire Strikes Back" had Han Solo kidnapped by the Empire and Luke Skywalker saved by a rebel ship. The ending of "Catching Fire" had Peeta captured by the Capitol and Katniss Everdeen saved by a rebel ship flying to the outskirts of Panem to figure out how to save Peeta.

Many reviews were already comparing the Capitol militants to “Star Wars” Stormtroopers.

“Catching Fire”:

Obviously coincidental, but people can’t help but compare this image of Finnick carrying a mute Mags from "Catching Fire" to Luke running around with Yoda on his back.

MTV compiled even more possible parallels between the two (most a bit too far-reaching).

'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' Has 4th-Largest Box-Office Opening Weekend Ever

hunger games catching fire

We knew "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" would have a big opening weekend.

The question was whether or not Jennifer Lawrence's anticipated sequel could take home more than Robert Downey Jr.'s "Iron Man 3" upon its debut.

It didn't.

"Catching Fire" came close but from early estimates ultimately made $161 million opening weekend.

"Iron Man 3" took in $174 million when it debuted the first weekend of May, kicking off the summer movie season.

Still, "Catching Fire" is doing great at the box office.

Its opening numbers are slightly larger than that of the first film ($155 million), and it managed to make more than "The Dark Knight Rises" when it premiered last summer (amid the Colorado shooting). Worldwide, the film has already made more than $307 million.

Its $161 million haul makes it the fourth-largest opening weekend at the domestic box office, falling behind "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2."

Here's a look at where "The Hunger Games" fairs in comparison to other top-earning opening weekends via BoxOfficeMojo.com.

Kanye West, not exactly known for his tact, made quite a pitch last night in the middle of his sold-out Madison Square Garden concert.

West wants Google's Eric Schmidt to invest in DONDA.

DONDA is West's creative agency, which he named after his late mother.

Complex Mag reports,

... after telling the audience that Google chairman Eric Schmidt was “in the house,” he asked approximately a dozen times “Do y’all want Eric Schmidt to invest in DONDA?” The answer was a resounding yes.

In recent interviews, Kanye has been asking for the support of big, established institutions to invest in DONDA.

Perhaps Google will be next.

Miley Cyrus arrived at the American Music Awards looking fairly conservative (for her) in a white pantsuit (with nothing underneath the blazer) accompanied by her shaggy-haired father, Billy Ray.

Miley was the show's final performer and anticipation was high after the 21-year-old's last Twerk-tastic Video Music Award performance.

This time, Miley hit the stage in a barely-there kitten two-piece and huge lucite jewelry while singing "Wrecking Ball" in front of an animated cat crying diamond tears.

The combination of the two nearly broke the Internet. Watch her performance below:

If you build it, they will use it for sexual gratification. Or at least that's what Twitch is learning.

Engadget reports that Twitch, the streaming video platform for gamers to broadcast their gaming sessions to the world, has discovered something of a porn problem, and it originates with PlayStation 4 consoles – Sony integrated Twitch directly into the PS4 software.

The PlayStation Eye camera can be pretty easily used to show your naughty bits and whatever other sultry content you like. Pair this with Twitch's platform, and it's suddenly a cinch for others to tune in to your amateur sex show.

Twitch's terms of service specifically prohibit non-gaming content going out over its platform, so it's paying extra-close attention to streams originating from Sony's new console and banning offending accounts.
