Joseph Gordon-Levitt appeared on "The Colbert Report" Wednesday to promote his latest film and directorial debut "Don Jon's Addiction" — about a guy obsessed with porn.

In real life, the actor says he is more obsessed with the porn industry's business model of "taking people's money."

He sarcastically says  porn films and “some other movies or commercials” are "not really trying to connect with an audience so much as take their money.”

“That’s what I admire about pornography,” Gordon-Levitt tells Colbert. “It is a sound business model.”

Paramount has released the first trailers for religious epic "Noah."

Starring Russell Crowe ("Gladiator") as Noah, the Academy winner takes on the task of building an ark to literally save the world.

The film is directed by Darren Aronofsky ("Black Swan") and also features Anthony Hopkins, Jennifer Connelly, and Emma Watson.

"Noah" is in theaters March 28, 2014.

Here's the international trailer:

Thoughts:

Hopkins' first line in the trailer ("Man has corrupted this world.") sounds like something straight out of "Thor: The Dark World."

Does anyone else feel like this looks like "Gladiator" on an ark?

If you're getting the PS4 console Friday, the PlayStation Camera — Sony's answer to Microsoft's Kinect— will not be coming with it.

The camera will cost an extra $59.99 in addition to the console which starts at $399. Among its features, the camera has face recognition, allows voice commands, and can track a person's position in a room.

Originally, Sony considered including the camera with the PlayStation 4 at launch November 15, but removed it because they couldn't afford the loss.

We'll break down whether it's worth shelling out an extra $60 for the PlayStation camera soon, until then, let's take a look at the camera we received along with our review unit.

John Oliver

In a surprising split, John Oliver is leaving his post as correspondent on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" to host his own weekly comedy show on HBO.

Oliver was received well as he filled in for Jon Stewart during his 12 week summer hiatus, and there was even talk of a succession plan.

Instead, the 36-year-old comedian will move to HBO, where his new topical comedy series will air Sunday nights starting in 2014.

According to a press release, the show will provide a satirical look at the week in news, politics and current events. Sound familiar?

“We weren’t otherwise searching for another weekly talk show, but when we saw John Oliver handling host duties on ‘The Daily Show,’ we knew that his singular perspective and distinct voice belonged on HBO,” said Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. “We are extremely excited that John has agreed to make HBO his home.”

Oliver commented, “I’m incredibly excited to be joining HBO, especially as I presume this means I get free HBO now. I want to thank Comedy Central, and everyone at ‘The Daily Show’ for the best seven and a half years of my life. But most of all, I’d like to thank Jon Stewart. He taught me everything I know. In fact, if I fail in the future, it’s entirely his fault.”

A Chinese Protester Explains Why Jimmy Kimmel Needs To Be Fired

Jimmy Kimmel China

Offense is cultural. Millions of Americans saw Jimmy Kimmel ask a child what they should do about the U.S. debt to China on his ABC show, and when the child suggested "killing everyone in China," and they probably chuckled to themselves and forgot about it.

For many Chinese people, however, the joke went too far, and they couldn't forget it. Since the show aired on October 16 more than 100,000 people have signed a petition asking for the White House to investigate the show, with protests comparing Kimmel to Hitler appearing in New York and Los Angeles.

Almost a month later, the scandal just won't go away, with the latest reports suggest that the Chinese government is getting involved. Many Americans are left scratching their head: Sure, the idea of killing everyone in China is abhorrent, but that's why everyone laughed — it was a ridiculous comment!

To get the other side of the argument, we reached out to one of the people involved in the protests.

Kimmy Got is a middle-aged housewife who lives in New Jersey. She was born in Hong Kong and emigrated to the U.S. in 1991, first to California, before later moving to the East Coast for her husband's work. She says that she first heard about the protest via a friend's email, and she was immediately hurt.

"My first reaction was 'WHAT?' Someone would say something so irresponsible, insensitive, vicious and cruel on a renowned TV station?" she explains. "I was totally stunned that these comments would be aired on TV in America today ... I could not believe it."

Kimmy says she has experienced racism before. "At times in my life, I have felt that I was being discriminated against racially," she says. "And I... I dealt with it, because discrimination is happening all over the world. Someone can discriminate against you and you may discriminate against other people in some way. It is unavoidable."

"But this … this is definitely not the same thing," she says. "The scale … it can't be compared."

Even though Kimmy is clear that she has never been involved in activism before, she was insulted and wanted to do something big about it.

"If you don't have this kind of big movement, nobody will hear you," she says. "It's only a private discussion."

So she went online, where she found others who were insulted. These groups began to organize themselves, first via email lists and then via a Wiki-based website.

The Wiki offers a fascinating glimpse into the movement. One page lists potential slogans for the group, including  "Fire Jimmy Kimmel, the new Hitler!" and "ABC, Don't kill me! (Let some cute kids holding this post)." On the poster page, there is a suggestion "if there are any Nazi symbols, I suggest you draw a cross above it." The website includes information about discrimination against Chinese-Americans, including an explanation of the murder of Vincent Chin, a man beaten to death in Michigan in an act of anti-Asian violence.

Kimmy went to the first demonstration in front of ABC's offices in New York City at the end of October, and she admits she was shocked that more than 100 people turned up. "It was just people talking online," she says. The most recent protest in Times Square on the ninth of November had more than 1,000 people, she said.

The start of this video shows Kimmy talking at Times Square:

So far, ABC have removed the clip from its website and posted a message online offering a "heartfelt, sincere apology." Kimmel himself brought up the segment on his show after the controversy began to snowball on October 29. "I just want to say I am sorry," he said. "I apologize. It was certainly not my intent to upset anyone." Later, an apology letter purportedly written by Kimmel was posted to the Sina Weibo account of Chinese news agency Xinhua.

The apologies change nothing in Kimmy's eyes, however. "Right now they really are playing some dirty games with us," she says. "They are trying to make the public think that they did apologize a few times. We have been following so closely, and we know they have not. All these apologies are false."

Kimmy says that she can't speak for everyone in the group, but she know what she personally wants — Kimmel fired. "Don't forget, Kimmel asked, "Should we be forced to pay our debts? What kind of question is that?" she says. "Kimmel doesn't know what DEBT means? How can he be qualified to be a public figure, to be a host on a TV show? His mentality deserves serious scrutiny."

She also believes that the White House (who have committed to responding to the anti-Kimmel petition as it has more than 100,000 signatures) should investigate Kimmel and ABC.

Kimmy's anger is clearly sincere. "America is one of the leading countries of the world.  Americans pride themselves as intelligent, loving and kind, but they would make these vicious remarks that are full of racial hatred, injustice, violence?"

When I suggested that perhaps Americans are scared of China's growing power, Kimmy is shocked.

"They're scared?" she says, before laughing. "No! If someone is scared of someone, they wouldn't make remarks like that. And if they did make the remarks stupidly, they would apologies ... They totally disrespect us. They know that us Chinese, we are quiet people and sometimes we are the victims of bullies as we just accept it. Thousands of years of history show that."

It's easy to think of China as a strong country, with a powerful military and a booming economy, but clearly not all Chinese people feel like that — some feel like their country is unfairly maligned and has been dominated for centuries. This seems to be a big factor in why the protests have become so big — a second White House petition (which specifically asks for Kimmel to be fired) makes this point obvious, asking "what would Martin Luther King say if a TV host asks ''Should we allow the African American to live" for joking?"

Kimmy says her hope is that these protests can unify Chinese people, and teach them not to be so obedient. However, it may also may also teach international media organizations to be extra careful when dealing with Chinese sentiment — ABC's parent company, Disney, had been planning a major expansion in the Chinese market. It needs this scandal to go away.

The new show will be a satirical look at the week in news, politics and current events airing Sunday nights starting in 2014.

The 10 Best Drinking Scenes On Film

$
0
0

matt damon good will hunting

Some of cinema's best scenes have been set against a backdrop of bars and drinking. Thinking Drinkers Ben McFarland and Tom Sandham round up their favourite moments

Films. They’re like books, but better.

Following weeks of scrupulous research, meticulous logistical planning and rigorous avoidance of proper work, we have gathered together some of the finest bar and drinking scenes ever committed to celluloid. Just for you.

1) Casablanca

This romantic noir starring Humphrey Bogart (Rick) as a broken-hearted bar owner in Morocco and filmed during the Second World War is an obvious place to begin.

“Of all the gin joints in all the towns, in all the world...” is arguably the most famous liquor-soaked scene in Hollywood history. But, for many, it’s not the film’s best bar scene – that accolade belongs to the rousing rendition of La Marseillaise in Rick’s Café Americain.

When German officers goad the bar’s Gallic contingent by singing the bloodthirsty German anthem “Die Wacht am Rhein”, the house band is ordered to play “La Marseillaise” by Victor Laszlo, exiled resistance leader and the husband of Rick’s lost love, played by Ingrid Bergman.

The band looks to Rick for approval. He gives a nod, a very cool nod at that, and the whole bar, overwhelmed with patriotic passion, join Laszlo in singing the Germans into submission.

Yet what makes the scene so powerful is that many of the multi-cultural cast were fresh from fleeing Nazi Europe.

2) The Shining

Lloyd is “the best damn barman from Timbuktu to Portland, Maine... and Portland Oregon for that matter”. But Lloyd isn't real. He's just a figment of Jack Nicholson's imagination, an imagination living in a brain that has gone very, very wrong. After being cooped up for too long in a hotel, a hotel that doesn't even have Wi-Fi or rolling Sky Sports News, he goes completely hat-stand, chasing his wife around the place with an axe.

Come on, we've all done it.

3) Mean Streets

Mean Streets is the film that hailed Martin Scorsese a "made man" in the world of cinema. Filmed in muted colour and almost entirely with a handheld camera, it broke new ground in cinematography and boasts three great bar scenes.

An early example of the slow-motion shot, Scorsese follows a young Robert De Niro into a brooding, red-lit bar that critics likened to Dante's Inferno. With two broads on his arm and a cool hat on his head, and to the tune of "Jumpin Jack Flash" by the Stones, it's a lesson on how to enter a drinking establishment. Then there’s a classic bar fight (it’s actually a pool hall, but quit busting our balls) where De Niro does over some douchebags in superbly shambolic fashion.

Yet both of the above are narrowly eclipsed by Harvey Keitel’s close-up, 90-second descent into a serious drunk funk, accompanied by the Chips’ doo-wop favourite “Rubber Biscuit”. Most of us remember how he feels. Or not, as the case may be.

4) Withnail & I

You may remember the summer of 2005 when Magners came up with the idea of drinking cider over ice. It, quite literally, made cider cool again and was widely hailed as a marketing masterstroke at the time.

But it wasn’t their idea. It was the boozy brainchild of Withnail (Richard E Grant – a teetotaller) in Withnail and I. From lighter fluid to “the finest wines available to humanity”, this cult eighties classic is steeped in alcohol and even boasts its own drinking game where viewers (mostly students) matching Withnail drink for drink. We suggest replacing the lighter fluid with vinegar as they did in the film.

5) Apocalypse Now

In preparing for his role as a dying alcoholic in Leaving Las Vegas, Nicholas Cage would film himself when he was drunk, study how he acted and talked, and replicate it while sober.

In preparing for his role as in Apocalypse Now, Martin Sheen didn’t bother with all that. He just got drunk. A lot. In a rather dark place personally, Sheen was off his face for the entire filming of the iconic opening scene, in which he drinks a bottle of whisky, goes stir-crazy within the walls of a Saigon hotel room and lacerates his hand by smashing it through a mirror.

That last bit wasn’t in the script but, hey, it was his birthday.

Months later, he had a heart attack and Apocalypse Now went on to win an Oscar.

Sadly, the actual scene is hard to find online but here, Sheen recalls the despair, the darkness and the drink that drove the scene.

6) Trainspotting

Fight! Fight! Fight!

Fighting is neither big nor clever unless the fights are in films. Or, better still, fights in bars in films. Yet with cinema steeped in scenes of booze-soaked fisticuffs, it’s almost impossible to pick the best fights on film.

Chazz Palmenteri opening an almighty can of whuppass on some rather rude Hells Angels in A Bronx Tale stands out – if only for the “Now Yous Can’t Leave” line. And if you like your bar brawls underwater then, of course, look no further than the superb Top Secret .

But film’s most memorable disagreement on licensed premises surely features Francis Begbie from Trainspotting. In Scotland, some pubs must serve their drinks in plastic glasses. People like Begbie are the reason why.

7) Cocktail

We make no apologies for this. Cocktail is the finest bartender film ever made. Not least because it's pretty much the only true bartender film ever made. Featuring Tom Cruise as Brian Flanagan doing cheesy and cocky in a way that only he can, it inspired many to pick up a Boston Shaker - even though purists point out that Flanagan is perhaps the world’s worst bartender.

Even now, over two decades later, anyone who so much as drops a bottle of booze is hailed as a wannabe Flanagan. While the film is brimming with killer/cheesy quotes, mostly from Dough Coughlin - the film's cocktail mentor played by Bryan Brown, the scene that melts the butter of nearly every bartender is Flanagan's impromptu recital of The Last Barman poet.

So bad, it’s good.

8) It’s A Wonderful Life

A Christmas classic. Teeming with tear-jerking moments, one or two of which never fail to bring a snot bubble to our blubbering faces, Franz Capra’s black and white tale of divine intervention tells the story of Clarence, an angel, showing a suicidal James Stewart (George Bailey) what the world would look like without him.

And it’s not a very nice place. Martini’s Tavern, once the bedrock of Bedford Falls society yet now a sleazy dive of ill-repute where James Stewart and the indecisive angel incur the wrath of Nick, the curmudgeonly bar owner. “Look, we serve hard drinks for men who want to get drunk fast and we don't need any characters around giving the joint atmosphere. Is that clear? Or do I need to slip you my left for a convincer?”

9) Good Will Hunting

Many know Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, a man who beats off enemies in the shower with a rolled-up newspaper.

But he first emerged on the film scene as the writer and star of Good Will Hunting. Directed by Gus Van Sant and starring co-writer Ben Affleck, it tells a tale of a Boston ne'erdowell who belies his unfortunate background by being a serious smartypants who can do algebra 'n' that.

Damon's beanbag-size brain first reveals itself when he puts a Harvard student upstart firmly in his place via the medium of long words and clever-clog sentences.

10) Star Wars

It’s all kicking off at the Mos Eisley Cantina– the weirdest bar in cinema. Situated on planet Tatooine within the pirate city of Mos Eisley, it’s not somewhere to take a first date. The clientele is made up of angry-looking aliens, jobbing freight pilots and the dodgy looking dregs of intergalactic society, there's an unnerving tolerance of extreme violence, the service is slack and the house band - Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes – sound like a fire in a pet shop. And they don’t serve droids. Heaven knows what the gents look like.

Watch Siskel And Ebert Completely Destroy A 'Star Wars' Hater On Live TV In 1983

John Simon, a film critic writing for New York Magazine about a hundred years ago in 1983, didn't like the third Star Wars movie, "Return of the Jedi." He went on Nightline with Ted Koppel to explain why he gave the movie such a horrible review.

"I feel they're so bad because they're completely dehumanizing...they are for children or childish adults," Simon said, clearly out of touch with the millions of presumably mature and intelligent adults who had seen the Star Wars movies over the years.

Luckily, legendary film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert were on Nightline at the same time to defend "Star Wars." And right off the bat, Ebert catches the essence of what "Star Wars" is:

"I totally disagree..I don't know what [Simon] did as a child, but I spent a lot of my Saturday matinees watching science fiction movies and being stimulated...having my imagination stimulated and having all sorts of visions in my mind that helped me become an adult and still stay young at heart," Ebert said.

"I feel badly that this critic, John Simon, didn't have a good time at these pictures. That's too bad for him," Siskel added.

You can watch the full clip below, which we first spotted on SlashFilm. Ebert and Siskel completely destroy Simon's Star Wars-hating:

Sarah Silverman Jimmy Kimmel

Comedians Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman dated for five years before calling it quits in 2009 — but the two have remained on friendly (and funny) terms ever since.

Silverman even appeared on Thursday's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to promote her first HBO comedy special "Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles."

"It's like I never left! Only you're married..." Silverman quipped as she sat down to chat with her ex.

But instead of talking about her comedy special, Silverman brought a box on-stage and told Kimmel: "This is some stuff of yours you left ... when you left. I figured I'd return it. Basic stuff."

Silverman proceeded to pass Kimmel a toothbrush, phone charger, "a collage of all the heads I cut out of our pictures together," and his old fat jeans.

"Um, you can cinch them or something?" Silverman joked, referring to Kimmel's weight loss.

PlayStation 4 Reviews: The PS4 Is Familiar, Yet Excitingly Advanced

ps4 best buy line

Folks, it's here. The much-anticipated PlayStation 4 hit store shelves today.

The new Sony gaming console comes a week before Microsoft launches its Xbox One — the ultimate holiday console war.

The PS4 launch is a pretty big deal — just ask the people who pre-ordered their systems months ago, and the diehard fans who lined up outside of retail stores.

The PlayStation 3 came out way back in November 2006, so needless to say, this is a long time coming.

We've had the PS4 for a few days, and though we've given our initial thoughts, like IGN and other sites, we're waiting to give a full review.

Before you decide to buy one, see what others are saying about Sony's next gen console:

The DualShock 4 controller's enhanced thumbsticks and triggers make it Sony's best controller yet.PS4 Dual Shock Controller

Engadget:

"The DualShock 4 feels natural from the moment you first pick it up."

"Perhaps the best compliment we can offer is, despite any issues we've experienced with the DualShock 4 thus far, it's a gamepad we feel comfortable using for the next five-plus years."

Polygon:

"We can say this unequivocally: The DualShock 4 is the best controller Sony has ever made."

Images look a whole lot more beautiful.

killzone shadow fall screenshot

Engadget:

"There's no missing the dazzling shadow and lighting effects, the intensity of detail and contrasting colors -- games look significantly better on the PlayStation 4 than even last-gen latecomers like BioShock Infinite and The Last of Us."

The Washington Post:

"The PS4 is a terrific game machine that will feel familiar to PlayStation 3 owners while delivering the flashier eye candy you’d expect from gaming’s next generation."

The PS4's game selection leaves a lot to be desired.

killzone knack ps4 exclusivesKotaku:

"We have played some games on it, and, well, they're launch games. They're ok, not amazing."

Polygon:

"That failing is sure to improve — better games and more of them will appear on the PlayStation 4 — but right now, this is a game console without a game to recommend it."

The Washington Post:

"The drawback is that you can’t play any of your PS3 games on the new machine."

The new console has a sleeker, more mature appearance.

console ps4 disc insertPolygon:

"It's a grown-up machine, designed more like a stylish DVD player than a gaudy video game console."

"It's a beautiful system, with a sharp, slightly angled profile accented by a light bar that acts as a console status indicator."

Kotaku:

"It is so sleek that it might as well be the 2015 PS4 Slim tossed back to us 2013ers via a time machine. It is lighter, thinner and quieter than the original 2006 PlayStation 3."

The PS4 can make everyone in your household happy.

ps4 console everythingThe Washington Post:

"It also offers such a wealth of easily accessible media apps, including Hulu and Netflix, that may draw even the non-gamers in your household."

Kotaku:

"Better, though less ballyhooed, is a headphone jack in the controller that, in conjunction with a change in the console's settings, can output all of a game's audio to controller-connected headphones, a trick most recently seen on the Wii U. Call that setting the Domestic Bliss option. Your most beloved housemates will appreciate it if they walk in and you swap the game audio from blaring through your speakers to purring through your headphones."

Overall consensus: Hold out a little longer on making the purchase.

Though the PS4 has a lackluster game library now, more games are sure to come down the road, not to mention a game streaming service that Sony has in the works for next year.

With an improved controller, access to media apps, new headphone capabilities, and party chat capabilities allowing for up to eight people, the PS4 has a bevy of awesome new features, so for the dedicated gamers out there — go for it.

But if you want to wait a little longer before throwing down that $399, that's OK, too.

Sony officially released its new PlayStation 4 video game console at midnight, but the launch has been anything but smooth.

Some users are having trouble connecting their new devices to the PlayStation Network, which lets them play games online, or are running into errors when they try to download and install an important 300 MB update that allows users to unlock remote play, screenshots, online multi-player, and more

PlayStation tweeted these explanations in response to complaints:

Sony Plows Ahead With Its 'Perfect Day' PS4 Launch Despite Death Of Lou Reed, Who Wrote The Music

Sony needs today's PS4 launch to be the "Perfect Day," and has been using the late Lou Reed's hit single of the same name to promote the console.

Since its release in 1971, critics and fans have been debating whether the song is about an ex-girlfriend or heroin — Reed had plenty of experience with both.

Sony and New York ad agency BBH recognized the song's celebration of sedated pleasure as well as its dark undertone with their commercial. In it, buddies place themselves in their PS4 games and sing Reed's single as they happily destroy each other:

The campaign actually premiered right before Reed died in October, but the rock star's death may actually make the ad more relevant due to the surging popularity of Reed's work.

Sony posted a second-quarter loss last month, but stands to gain billions with the PS4 and purchases of video games and streaming media.

Sony expects to sell three million Ps4s by the end of the year, with an additional two million sold between January and March.

The console's $399 price tag is $100 cheaper than that of Microsoft's Xbox One, which comes out next week.

Sleek.

The PlayStation 4 is sleek.

That's the one word practically every review is using to describe Sony's new console that came out today.

However, we can't blame them. After all, it's the first word that came to our minds here and others when we've shown it to them.

Let's take a look:

Mashable:

"The PlayStation 4 is a sleek, beautifully designed machine."

Rolling Stone:

"It's a sleek, smart piece of hardware, full of next-generation components and features."

MTV:

"The design of the PlayStation 4 is sleek and bold."

ABC:

"It's a bit too early to call until we can compare the two side-by-side, but for now we've got you covered with our first impressions of Sony's sleek entry."

New York Daily News:

"The first shot has been fired in this holiday season’s video game war, and it’s sleek and powerful and designed for the hardcore gamer."

How sleek is it, Kotaku?

"It is so sleek that it might as well be the 2015 PS4 Slim tossed back to us 2013ers via a time machine."

It's not just the console that's sleek.

Fox:

"A slanted black box with both a matte and shine finish, with a sleek blue line through the middle, the PlayStation 4 will slot into most living rooms comfortably."

Engadget:

"Sony's fourth PlayStation console is fast, sleek and powerful."

" ...the DualShock 4 is a delight. It's comfy, responsive, sleek and familiar."

Double sleek! Techradar:

"Sony's new console is two sleek slabs of industrial design fused together for one purpose: living room dominance."

From our experience with the PS4 so far, Entertainment Weekly nailed the point of the console:

"Favoring functionality over flashiness, the simple, sleek design of the platform immediately speaks to its desire to be more a gaming system than an all-in-one entertainment hub."

Not only is sleek reviewers' favorite word for the PlayStation 4, it's also among the first words early buyers are using to describe the console.

Games like Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, and Candy Cash Saga are just as much fun in their tablet forms, plus you get more screen space to take in the cute artwork that developers put into their games.

But what about the really hardcore gamers? The ones who have at least one of the major game consoles or a gaming PC and expect more from their games?

We've rounded up the very best games available on the iPad for the gamer who wants more intricate gameplay, higher production quality, and the emotional stories that most people don't associate with tablet gaming.

11. Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP is a beautiful mix between an experimental musical album and a video game. It's a bit short, but given the low price of the iPad version it's definitely worth a play through.
