Ryan Seacrest Was A Great High School Football Player, Would 'Knock The Crap Out Of People'

ryan seacrest nbc football

Ryan Seacrest is involved in NBC's coverage of tonight's NFL game between the Denver Broncos and the Baltimore Ravens, and a lot of people are asking why.

But it might surprise you to know that Seacrest was apparently once a really good football player.

Seacrest played at Dunwoody High School outside Atlanta in the early 90s (the Internet says he graduated in either 1992 or 1993). According to CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman, he started at defensive back for two years before graduating.

David Kelly — who coached at Dunwoody before moving onto the college ranks — told Feldman that Seacrest used to "knock the crap out of people."

Dunwoody is no joke. They won the state AAAA championship in 1993.

So with the exception the two guys who actually played in the NFL, Seacrest is probably the most decorated football player that NBC has on site tonight.

'Riddick' Reviews: Vin Diesel Fans Will Be Happy After Waiting Nearly A Decade For The Sequel

vin diesel riddick

After nearly a decade, Vin Diesel returns as cult favorite Riddick, a convict with the ability to see in the dark, in this weekend's follow-up to the 2004 film "Chronicles of Riddick."

The third film in the series from director David Twohy ("The Fugitive"), the new movie follows the gist of the two previous flicks with Riddick deserted on a hostile planet left to fend for himself.

The first two films were never major box-office hits. Instead, over the years, the series gained a cult following. ("Pitch Black" earned $53 million worldwide while the costly $105 million sequel "The Chronicles of Riddick" grossed $115 million in theaters.)

"The reality is that I always envisioned the 'Riddick' franchise as a continuing mythology, so I always imagined that there would be many other films to follow," Diesel told Spinoff Online. "And yet, I do feel like I answered that growing request from the fans that said, 'Please make another Riddick.'"

After many were unfazed by the 2004 sequel "Chronicles of Riddick," the new movie returns to its roots channeling the first film in the series "Pitch Black."

Currently, "Riddick" is sitting at 59% on film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

No matter how the movie is being reviewed, it's the perfect time to release the film — Diesel's riding the media wave after this summer's hugely successful "Fast & Furious 6" and the actor hinted at an appearance in a future Marvel movie

It's clear the film is appealing to Diesel's wide fan base. According to a Fandango survey of more than 1,000 "Riddick" ticket-buyers, 89% are fans of the actor while 67% have seen all of his "Fast & Furious" films in theaters.

Here's what you should know before seeing it:

The beginning is great.riddick and dogEmpire Magazine:

"Largely wordless, the segment reminds us that Diesel still has charisma enough to hold our attention when he’s the only human element on screen for 25 minutes, fending off scorpion beasts and taming feral CG wolf-bastards."

Time Out NY:

"First things first, though—namely a terrific, mostly dialogue-free 20-minute opening during which Riddick acclimates to his new surroundings."

Variety

"If nothing in 'Riddick' ever quite tops that opening act, when it seems as though the entire movie might be a solo Diesel performance piece, even at its most conventional this is a solid, unpretentious B-movie entertainment of the sort John Carpenter was regularly turning out in the 1980s and ‘90s."

The dialogue isn't fantastic. Note: This happened with another big blockbuster this year ("Fast 6"). It's not the end of the world. You're not heading out to see "Riddick" for dialogue.

Associated Press (AP)

‘‘Sloppy’’ is a kind word, actually, for the ridiculously clumsy dialogue in ‘‘Riddick.’’

But, you're here for the gore anyway, right? Right ...

The Hollywood Reporter (THR):

"Plenty of bone crunching and blood gushing, along with some selective nudity, have boosted the movie’s rating up to an “R,” but lacking the distinctive visual style, robust production design and planet-hopping pace of its predecessor."

... and crude jokes.

L.A. Weekly:

"Instead, we must pan for scraps of pleasure … while trying not to get so riled up by all the rape jokes that we spin around and stab our seatmate ... Nothing says Strong Female Character like a savage babe who spends most of the film getting sexually harassed."

riddick vin dieselDon't expect anything mind-blowing. THR's Justin Lowe says the film doesn't take a lot of risks.

"The latest installment feels tentative even at a flabby 120 minutes, more like a placeholder that barely advances the considerable Riddick mythology. Playing it safe with a script that offers Riddick up as a lone avenging hero, Twohy passes on the opportunity to effectively shade the character’s distinctive dimensionality."

IGN

"It's not to say there isn't entertainment value to be had in this — there are a few cool kills throughout — it's just that we've seen this all before."

Critics can't decide whether they enjoy the CGI planet Riddick inhabits or hate it.

Time Out

"Watching this see-in-the-dark muscleman brooding against gorgeous otherworldly vistas, all while crafting pointy homemade weapons and befriending a scene-stealing CGI canine (no joke), is a sci-fi aficionado’s delight."

THR

"While 'Chronicles' was a full-blown space opera, the current iteration is beset by unremarkable CGI effects and tethered to limited locations."

Overall, it's fun, campy, and everything that will keep the cult-following of the original film happy, should leave happy.

AP:

"The bald and beefy Diesel, whose sturdy commercial appeal is proven again and again with the huge success of the ‘‘Fast & Furious’’ franchise, is always fun to watch."

IGN:

"It's precisely the movie I thought it would be: an overly macho Vin Diesel killing monsters and scumbags. Predictable and pedestrian, sure, but are you not getting exactly what you pay for? This is a Riddick movie not a Harold Pinter drama."

Variety:

"And where 'Chronicles' overdosed on cartoonish CGI, 'Riddick' returns to the 'Pitch Black' formula of mixing animated elements with practical effects and puppetry, creating a tactile otherworldly environment that ranges from the sets to the props to the creatures (designed by the great Patrick Tatopoulos) themselves."

Overall Consensus: If you're a fan of the series, and Vin Diesel, see it.

The film clearly knows its audience. We're not worried about its box-office performance this weekend. The film is the fan favorite for the weekend on Fandango — not that that's a great feat. There honestly isn't much else out, unless a poorly reviewed documentary on J.D. Salinger ("Catcher in the Rye" author) sounds appealing.

Check out a trailer for the film:

Burning Man is a week-long festival in the Nevada desert that attracts all walks of life, including the Silicon Valley elite.

Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Eric Schmidt, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have all attended.

Last year, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made quite an entrance.

Zuckerberg took a helicopter in to Burning Man for one day to help fry up some grilled cheese sandwiches. The grand entrance was initially reported by The Verge and confirmed by Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz.

Moskovitz says Zuckerberg even pitched his own tent. He writes on Medium:

"[Zuckerberg] was a guest in the camp I built and no money changed hands. Along with its other inhabitants, he helped pitch his own tent. I wanted him to experience the city and to experience gifting because I thought it would make him grow as a person and the world better off as a result; I believe that’s exactly what happened, however marginally (he was already a pretty great person)."

Here's what other billionaires do at Burning Man.

Lady Gaga Norman Oosterbroek

Norman Oosterbroek has been responsible for protecting the lives of A-listers such as Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Rihanna and even Nelson Mandela.

But on Monday night, the 6'5, 43-year-old celebrity bodyguard from South Africa known as "The Dutch Giant," put his own life in jeopardy when he "broke into his neighbor’s property in Miami’s Pinecrest neighborhood while naked and carrying a white powdery substance," reports RadarOnline.

“He did gain access to the home,” Detective Robin Pinkard of the Miami-Dade Police Department tells RadarOnline. “According to the victim [Christiane Jung], she heard a noise. When she walked outside of her bedroom, she observed him standing there unclothed.”

Oosterbroek proceeded to get into a verbal argument with Christiane Jung's husband, Markus, “which escalated to a physical confrontation,” according to a police report.

“During the confrontation, [Oosterbroek] was observed ingesting an unknown substance," according to the report.

Mrs. Jung called police and officers were forced to taser Oosterbroek after being unable to subdue the 280-lb. bodyguard.  He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

“He was highly violent, uncontrollable and obviously wasn’t stable,” said Nancy Perez, spokeswoman for Miami-Dade police, which is investigating the incident.

Oosterbroek had been in and out of rehab for several years, according to a report in the Miami Herald.

Victim Jung tells the Herald, “Our family needs time to heal. This was really, really horrible and we can’t talk about it now. I can tell you that Pinecrest police took very good care of us. It was horrifying.”

Although Oosterbroek lived a few doors down and across the street, Mrs. Jung said, “We really don’t know the man at all.”

But Oosterbroek was well known in his own field for being an aggressive bodyguard.

Three years ago, at a Jay Z concert in Washington, D.C., Oosterbroek broke the legs of a fan who crashed the stage during the rapper's concert. Watch below:

Sarah Silverman Writes Emotional 'Obituary Type Thing' For Her Deceased Dog And 'Longest Relationship'

Sarah Silverman dog Duck

It's no laughing matter for comedian Sarah Silverman that her dog — and best friend of 14 years — passed away this week.

Silverman rescued her dog, named "Duck," from a shelter in Van Nuys in 1999.

"Since then we have slept most every night together," Silverman wrote in a heartfelt "obituary type thing" for Duck on her WhoSay page.

After many good years together as "best friends," Silverman says "he became blind, deaf, and arthritic. But with a great vet, good meds, and a first rate seeing-eye person named me, he truly seemed comfortable. "

But eventually, it was time to let her "longest relationship" and "only experience of maternal love" go Tuesday after "he stopped eating or drinking."

Silverman shared the news on her Twitter account:

She later posted a longer, revealing, and emotional tribute to Duck:

I wrote an obituary type thing:

Duck “Doug” Silverman came into my life about 14 years ago.

He was picked up by the State running through South Central with no collar, tags or chip. Nobody claimed or adopted him so a no-kill shelter took him in.

That’s where I found him — at that shelter, in Van Nuys. Since then we have slept most every night together (and many lazy afternoons.) When we first met, the vet approximated his age at 5 ½ so I’d say he was about 19 as of yesterday, September 3, 2013.

He was a happy dog, though serene. And stoic. And he loved love.

Over the past few years he became blind, deaf, and arthritic. But with a great vet, good meds, and a first rate seeing-eye person named me, he truly seemed comfortable.

Recently, however, he stopped eating or drinking. He was skin and bones and so weak. I couldn’t figure out this hunger strike. Duck had never been political before. And then, over the weekend, I knew. It was time to let him go.

My boyfriend Kyle flew in late last night and took the day off from work to be with us. We laid in bed and massaged his tiny body, as we love to do – hearing his little “I’m in heaven” breaths.

The doctor came and Kyle, my sister, Laura and I laid on the bed. I held him close – in our usual spoon position and stroked him. I told him how loved he was, and thanked him for giving me such happiness and for his unwavering companionship and love. The doctor gave him a shot and he fell asleep, and then another that was basically an overdose of sleeping meds. I held him and kissed him and whispered to him well passed his passing. I picked him up and his body was limp – you don’t think about the head – it just falls. I held him so tight. And then finally, when his body lost its heat, and I could sense the doctor thinking about the imminent rush hour traffic, I handed him over.

14 years.
My longest relationship.
My only experience of maternal love.
My constant companion.
My best friend.
Duck.

Here's what the internet is saying about it:

Here's the ridiculous lyrics in their entirety below (via Dennis Bonilla):

Dog goes woof
Cat goes meow
Bird goes tweet

Cow goes moo
Frog goes croak

Ducks say quack

and the seal goes ow ow ow

But there’s one sound
That no one knows
What does the fox say?

Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!
Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!

What the fox say?

Suddenly you're standing still

Your fur is red
So beautiful
Like an angel in disguise

But if you meet

Will you communicate by

How will you speak to that

Ancient mystery
Somewhere deep in the woods
I know you’re hiding

The brand was a sponsor at GQ's "Man Of The Year" party, Mail Online reported. Brand was a presenter.

"If anyone knows a bit about history and fashion, you know it was Hugo Boss who made uniforms for the Nazis," Brand allegedly said while on stage. "But they looked f---ing fantastic, let’s face it, while they were killing people on the basis of their religion and sexuality."

Magazine editor Dylan Jones then asked Brand to leave, according to Mail Online.

Brand described their conversation on Twitter:

Hugo Boss manufactured Nazi uniforms during World War II. The brand's founder reportedly had a framed photograph of himself with Adolf Hitler.

Nikki Finke Wants Deadline Hollywood Blog Back From Penske Media

Nikki Finke

In 2009, Nikki Finke sold her online entertainment magazine Deadline Hollywood Daily — famous for its original scoops — to Mail.com Media Group, an Internet company controlled by Jay Penske, for a whopping $14 million

But when Penske also purchased Finke's competitor, Variety, last year, she wasn't happy.

Despite being owned by the same company, Deadline recently mocked Variety for its "humiliating loss of readership and influence."

Apparently, Finke was peeved that 34-year-old Chairman and CEO, Jay Penske, didn't give her a leading role at Variety, which is a direct competitor and has been around for longer than Deadline.

And now Finke wants out of Penske's media empire.

"Jay Penske shared my vision of what Deadline could be, [but] now circumstances have changed with the addition of Variety and the issue is whether this shared vision is still intact," Finke tells The Wall Street Journal in a candid new interview. "One of the most noble things Jay Penske could ever do would be to give me back Deadline."

If Penske doesn't give Finke her site back, the veteran journalist says she will find an investor to help her buy the site back.

And if neither of those things happen, Finke will just start her own site, the NikkiFinke.com — which, she says, "would fill a different need for the Hollywood community" than Deadline.

Finke tells the WSJ she believes that in order for the publications to coexist as corporate siblings, they can't be direct competitors.

"It is very clear that our specialty is breaking news," Finke said of Deadline. "I would like to see Variety's specialty be analysis and commentary."

And in seemingly further hopes of keeping the peace, Finke tells the WSJ, "I have confidence that no matter what happens, Jay and I can reach an amicable solution to all of this."

A spokesperson for Penske, meanwhile, emailed the WSJ a flat reply: "We are very pleased with the overwhelming success of the Variety business since our acquisition, as well as Deadline.com's continued growth of audience and revenue."

While Finke's attorneys have proposed that she should be let out of her contract, which runs through 2016, the Penske rep says the company has "every intent to continue ... our contractual relationship with Ms. Finke through the end of her term."

People Magazine Used A Stock Photo Of A Woman Wearing Google Glass And Said It Was Sergey Brin's New Girlfriend

In this week's issue of People Magazine there's a story that's been making waves in the tech world: Google's co-founder Sergey Brin has been dating one of his colleagues, Amanda Rosenberg as All Things D reported last week.

Also in the issue is a picture of a woman wearing Google Glass and riding a bicycle, whom People Magazine identified as Rosenberg.

The one glaring problem? That's not a photo of Amanda Rosenberg.

Though the two women bear some resemblance in nationality, hair length, and of course, their propensity for Google Glass, the image in question seems to have been pulled from Splash, a site that stockpiles celebrity photos for a subscriber's fee.

This is the spread in People Magazine this week, which we first saw on Valleywag:

People Magazine

Perhaps the most surprising part of the mis-identification of Rosenberg is the fact that she has uploaded many photos of herself (even some of her using Glass) to her Google + page, photos that have been making the rounds in the media since the story of her alleged affair with Brin broke.

All Things D reported Rosenberg had originally been dating Hugo Barra, an executive at Google who recently left for Chinese phone company, Xiaomi, when their relationship ended. Shortly after Barra and Rosenberg split, Rosenberg began dating Brin. Brin separated from his wife Anne Wojcicki several months ago.

People Magazine isn't the only outlet who made this mistake. A site called Miami Newsday used the same photo last week.

The Biggest Box-Office Bombs Of Summer 2013

$

jobs ashton kutcher

Despite a record $4.7 billion dollars earned this summer at the box office, there were still plenty of box-office flops.

From disappointing weekend openings to films that didn't carry well domestically or overseas, there were nearly as many box-office hiccups as there were success stories.

We've compiled the worst performing movies of summer 2013.

Click here to see the biggest losers of the summer >

We're going back to May, since the summer movie season officially kicked off with "Iron Man 3" May 3. (After the past few summers studios are increasingly releasing all of their big potential blockbusters from May-July leaving August a dry spell.)

These rankings are based on production budgets, how much studios had riding on the films and how hard they underperformed opening weekend along with overall worldwide grosses taken into account.

A note on a few summer releases not on this list that have been on other worst lists of the summer:

"After Earth" and "Smurfs 2" do not appear here because after accounting for foreign box office, the films should not be considered bombs. While Will Smith's "After Earth" certainly had a poor box-office opening ($27 million) and was a dud here earning $60 million, the film, a costly $130 million, went on to earn $243 million worldwide.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, insiders at Sony who distributed the film said they could lose $20 million on the film back in June.

"Smurfs 2" earned a paltry $67 million domestically, but soared overseas to take in $255.8 million worldwide.

While "Elysium" didn't break out to become Neil Blomkamp's next "District 9," the more expensive Matt Damon film has grossed $179 million. It cost an estimated $115 million. There were much bigger upsets than this TriStar film.

"jOBS" (Open Road Films)

Release date: August 16
Estimated budget: $12 million
Opening weekend: $6.7 million
Worldwide gross: $15 million

Though Ashton Kutcher looked like a dead ringer for Steve Jobs, Joshua Michael Stern's jOBS opened to brutal reviews. Apple employees also called it nothing more than a work of fiction. Aaron Sorkin will be releasing his own bio-pic of the tech guru.

(Source: Box Office Mojo)

"Tyler Perry Presents Peeples" (Lionsgate)

Release date: May 10
Estimated budget: $15 million
Opening weekend: $4.6 million
Worldwide gross: $9.2 million

Normally, Tyler Perry films do exceedingly well at the box office. However, this film was directed not by Perry himself, but instead first-time director Tina Gordon Chism ("Drumline" writer). The film became Perry's lowest box-office opening to date. Despite starring "Scandal" star Kerry Washington, Craig Robinson ("The Office") wasn't a big enough draw to bring viewers.

(Source: Box Office Mojo)

"Getaway" (Warner Bros.)

Release date: August 30
Estimated budget: $18 million
Opening weekend: $4.5 million
Worldwide gross to date: $6.3 million

Again, you probably didn't hear a lot about Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke's need-for-speed-esque thrill ride until after the film came out. The film was poorly marketed, with poor reception and tracking from social media.

“Is Derek based on a life experience?” —th3greg

“The situation certainly is. Half my family growing up were carers of some sort, mostly retirement homes (stroke, Alzheimers), and Derek is like my fictional superhero of an everyday gentle outsider. I suppose they're all little fables about kindness. And possibly, a love letter to my lovely, poor and humble family growing up.” —RickyGervais

People say they spot celebrities in New York City all the time.

But the best time to have a celebrity siting in NYC has to be during the 10 days of the US Opens. Models, athletes, old actors, young actors—everybody who's anybody shows up.

This year has been no different. Celebrities love their tennis.

I Went To Burning Man And It Was Even Crazier Than I Expected [PHOTOS]

Burning Man

I like festivals.

I got my feet dirty during NYC's Governor's Ball, listened to lots of music at Coachella, checked out the parties, and even embraced the outrageous outfits.

But Burning Man made these festivals look wimpy.

Burning Man, as the website proclaims, is "an annual art event and temporary community based on radical self expression and self-reliance in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada."

This year, over 61,000 people attended, many of them in the tech industry.

Check out my trip here >

While most people go for the full seven days, I only did three, so my experience may have been different from others. But the beauty of Burning Man is that everyone can have whatever kind of experience they want.

For me, I loved biking around during the hot desert days looking at all of the beautiful art installations constructed in the middle of nowhere and taking advantage of strangers' generosity by way of wine tastings, zip lines and fried chicken.

For others, the festival comes alive at night. As the sun goes down, the lights of Black Rock City come up and the pulse of the music keeps people awake until well into the following day.

Since most people who haven't been to Burning Man seem to be confused by what it actually is, here are some photos that sum up my trip.

It all started with this: a cheap, leopard suitcase I purchased on the streets of NYC. Everything you bring to Burning Man you risk getting seriously dirty or losing. I felt okay sacrificing this.

I packed it full with costumes, sunscreen, sunglasses, flashlights, food, and other items on the official checklist. Everything is in plastic bags to keep it clean from the impending desert dust.

By the time I got to the airport, this bad boy weighed a whopping 53 pounds.

Here's What A Fancy Billionaire's Camp Looks Like At Burning Man [PHOTOS]

Part of the Burning Man experience is roughing it.

The 61,000 people who attended this year's Burning Man Festival all stayed in tents, yurts, RVs — or didn't sleep at all.

But some "camps" — as the clusters of tents and RVs are called — are nicer than others.

For example, I went to Burning Man and stayed in this small, smelly RV:

Burning Man

Others stayed in tents like this:

Burning Man

But not all accommodations are so ... dusty.

invited myself visited the camp of one billionaire, who hosts an annual "fancy camp" for friends at "The Burn."

This was the dining room where the camp gathered for meals. It is by far the nicest set-up I saw throughout the festival.

Burning Man

The food was prepared by a staff of caterers (!) who have an entire truck devoted to meal prep. The meals are then served buffet-style in a separate tent.

Burning Man

There was sea bass, risotto, and fresh veggies!

Burning Man

Heirloom tomatoes and burrata cheese drizzled with balsamic vinegar!

Burning Man

Chocolate mousse for dessert — and there was even a vegan option!

Burning Man

Meanwhile, I was eating whatever food I could scavenge, like fried chicken from this guy:

Burning Man

But not in the billionaire camp! In fancy camp, you have everything you need — head lamps, dust masks, even Q-Tips — organized in shelves with labels!

Burning Man

There was a bar that served cosmopolitan cocktails from a cooler:

Even the trash was clean and organized:

This is what trash looked like in other camps:

But at billionaire camp, you get pool tables!

Burning Man

And a custom-built stage with a rock band flown in to perform — because this billionaire doesn't like typical Burning Man house music, but he loves rock 'n roll:

A Punk Girl Group And A Funnyman Songwriter — New Music You Should Be Listening To This Weekend

Neko Case

With so many great tracks and albums coming out every week, it’s sometimes difficult to keep up with all the news.

Lucky for you, we at FILTER love looking through everything to find some great new music amongst everything.

Neko Case

Six albums in and Neko Case can still bring something new to the table. With the release of her latest album, "The Worse Things Get," "The Harder I Fight," "The Harder I Fight," "The More I Love You," Case’s inherent ability to captivate listeners with her gorgeous voice, lyrics and subtle sonic experimenting shines through.

Dent May

Dent MayThis multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter from Mississippi sure knows how to write breezy, love songs that easily get stuck in your head. May’s latest effort, "Warm Blanket," is a showcase of his talents with gems like “Born Too Late” and “It Takes A Long Time.” On top of all his musical skill, May also has a fantastic sense of humor that shines through his records.

Potty Mouth

potty mouth bandThere’s a lot to be said about growing up and the girls of Potty Mouth have their stories to tell. With their upcoming album, "Hell Bent," they draw inspiration from punk roots to create a very DIY sound that is rough, raw and angry. Their first single “Damage” questions the truth in identity and perception, a theme that sets the tone for their music.

Chelsea Wolfe

chelsea wolfeThe goth-folk songstress seems to have an affinity for cold, dark music and we love it. Wolfe’s voice is ethereal in its echoes and the music that envelops her voice is absolutely chilling. The LA based artist’s latest album—"Pain Is Beauty"—continues on the dark-pop path and brings beautiful songs like “We Hit A Wall” and “The Warden” to listen to over and over again.

Okkervil River

okkervil riverIt’s been a long couple years since 2011’s "I Am Very Far," but the Austin rockers have finally released their seventh full-length album that has us falling in love with them again. Since their first single “It Was My Season” off "The Silver Gymnasium," we felt the promise of the new album and they haven’t disappointed us yet.
