Louis C.K. Found A Dead Body Floating In NYC's East River

Louis CK David Letterman

Louis C.K. was going for a joy ride in his new boat this summer when all of a sudden the comedian came upon a dead body, or "floater," as he later learned it was called.

"I got a boat and I was floating around lower Manhattan and up the East Side and you have a radio on the whole time, it's an open channel. So the coast guard comes on and says 'please be aware there's report of a body in the water south of the Queensboro Bridge,' which is where I was," the comedian told David Letterman while appearing on the "Late Show" this week. "And as soon as I heard it I looked down and there was the dude in the water."

"I called the coastguard and I said 'I got the dead guy right here!' Louis explained, adding "I'd never seen a dead guy. It was creepy and weird and I felt embarrassed for him a little bit."

But then the comedian got serious, saying "I thought about it and this was a person, this was a life, a story, and he's just a floater now. I felt all kinds of things."

Watch below to see if Louis took a photo of the dead body:

New Posters And Trailer For 'Homeland' Tease Season 3 Plot

Showtime unveiled official posters and a new teaser trailer for season 3 of "Homeland."

We've seen a few action-packed teasers so far for the series return. The latest shows Saul (Mandy Patinkin), Carrie (Claire Danes), and Brody (Damian Lewis) set to the tune of Adele's "Lovesong."

Clearly a ballad that fits with the two star-crossed lovers, it's slightly jarring to see Saul in the mix.

The posters focus on the tagline "Pledge Allegiance." The line appears to be aimed at Carrie who must decide between aligning herself to Saul and the CIA or proving the innocence of on-the-run fugitive and love Brody.

Decisions, decisions.

"Homeland" returns September 29 to Showtime at 9 p.m.

First watch the trailer:

Here's the official poster:

Ben Affleck Is The New Batman

Ben Affleck is the new Batman.

Variety's Justin Kroll broke the news.

Affleck will play Batman in a movie featuring  Batman and Superman. It'll be a sequel to this summer's Superman movie, "Man of Steel."

The movie is due out in July 2015.

"Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder announced there would be a Batman/Superman movie at this year's ComicCon.

Here's a video of that:

This isn't Affleck's first superhero role. In 2003, he played Daredevil, a movie that isn't remembered particularly fondly.

Here's what Affleck looked like in that costume:

Here's a tailer for that movie:

Affleck replaces Christian Bale.

Hopefully, Affleck won't be as bad of a Batman as George Clooney was.

Here's a picture of George Clooney as Batman. Apparently he keeps a similar picture framed in his office, as a warning not to do movies just for the money.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW: The 13 Most And Least Successful 'Survivor' Winners

richard hatch survivor winner check

Thirteen years ago, Richard Hatch — the conniving contestant who annoyed his tribesmen by walking around in the (not so buff) buff — took home the $1 million prize.

He was the first winner of “Survivor,” CBS’s low-budget reality-show-that-could.

Hatch, quite notably, evaded paying taxes on his earnings and served 51 months in prison for it. To this day, he insists that he was innocent.

Some “Survivor” winners end up losers, while others go on to host reality shows, start their own companies, and contribute to charities.

CBS announced the newest crop of contestants on Wednesday, revealing that season 27 will pin returning favorites against their loved ones — including previous winners Tina Wesson (and daughter) and Aras Baskauskas (and brother).

“Survivor: Blood vs. Water” debuts on CBS on September 28.

THEN: Richard Hatch, "Survivor: Borneo" [Season 1]

The Machiavellian, and often naked, first winner of "Survivor" is considered the pioneer of the show's alliance tactic.

NOW: Richard Hatch went behind bars for tax evasion.

After being convicted of tax evasion, Hatch served three years in prison and was fired from Donald Trump on "The Apprentice."

He met up with the two children he fathered as a sperm donor on an episode of "Oprah: Where Are They Now?"

During the interview, he insisted that he never deserved to go to prison.

THEN: Ethan Zohn, “Survivor: Africa” [Season 3]

The professional soccer player won seven challenges, making him a physical threat, but his big heart kept him from being targeted by other competitors early in the game.

The Internet Exploded After Learning Ben Affleck Is Playing The Next Batman

$

ben affleck batman

Ben Affleck will play the next Batman.

Let that sink in.

Warner Bros. announced that Affleck will take over the role of Gotham's white knight in the "Man of Steel" sequel.

Director Zack Snyder said the following about Affleck in the press release:

“Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne.  I can’t wait to work with him.”

Naturally, the Internet is bursting at the seams at the news — #Batfleck was a trending topic last night.

Any comic book fan is most likely raising their eyebrows at the selection choice. After all, Affleck starred in 2003's lackluster "Daredevil" adaptation that earned $179 million for Fox but was a ratings flop.

Here's what the reactions have been since news broke:

A lot of people weren't happy.

There are a lot of jokes about how Matt Damon should play his sidekick …

... and others about Aquaman. (For any comic fan, Aquaman has become the butt of all jokes in the DC universe.)

At least Batman will have a Boston accent now, right?

Some are willing to give the actor a chance.

Forbes' contributor and Batfan Mark Hughes makes the case for Ben Affleck.

And then there were celebrity reactions:

Simpsons' writer Tim Long had a great response.

And naturally there's already a Ben Affleck Batman Twitter account.

aziz ansari

"Parks And Recreation" star Aziz Ansari has signed a whopping $3.5 million book deal with Penguin Press for his first book, the publisher announced Thursday.

Details of the deal were not revealed but Publisher's Weekly reported it netted Ansari a the mulit-million dollar advance.

The untitled book, due out September 2015 , will cover topics such as love, the single life and technology.

Ansari explained a bit about his book in a statement after announcing the deal:

"You know when you text someone you're romantically interested in and you don't hear anything back and then you see them post a photo of a pizza on Instagram? That's exactly what I want this book to deal with."

Brilliant.

He continued, "These are strange conundrums that no generation has ever faced before and it's a fascinating jumping off point for what I hope will be a very interesting book about modern courtship."

The publisher further explained that the book  "will provide an investigation into what Ansari argues is an entirely new era for singles, in which the basic issues facing a single person — whom we meet, how we meet them, and what happens next — have been radically altered by new technologies.”

Ansari's lucrative deal puts him just behind the $3.7 million Lena Dunham scored for her book in October and according to The Hollywood Reporter, "likely ahead of such stars as Tina FeyAmy PoehlerMindy Kaling and B.J. Novak."

Why Warner Bros. Had To Pick Ben Affleck To Play Batman

$
0
0

superman batman crossover

Ben Affleck is Batman.

For the fans of the Dark Knight, comic books, movies, superheroes, or entertainment in general, it's all anyone is talking about

Memories of Affleck's portrayal of 2003's "Daredevil" have been fiercely flying around the Internet, leaving many fans worried and confused.

How could a guy who so poorly played a superhero the last time around be chosen for one of the biggest and most-loved superhero roles out there?

Consider that after stomaching George Clooney as Batman and odd nippled leather suits, Batfans finally had the envisionment of the hero they wanted with Christian Bale. The new dynamic duo was not Batman and Robin, but Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan (plus David S. Goyer and Jonathan Nolan).

No longer. Affleck and Snyder are in, Christian Bale and Nolan are out. For fans, Affleck as Batman might not immediately seem the best choice.

But as a business decision, Warner Brother's casting Affleck is a no brainer. They had to do it.

Here's why.

1. Warner Brothers needs a new powerhouse star after losing Legendary Pictures

Affleck is that star. He acts. He directs. He brings in the money. Since 2010, Ben Affleck has brought "The Town" (also Legendary) and Oscar winner "Argo" to screen for WB.

So earlier this summer, when Warner Bros. lost its huge distributor partner Legendary Pictures to Universal Pictures, some major decisions had to get made.

Top execs are likely hyper aware of the two Warner Bros. big money-makers (other than the "Lord of the Rings" franchise which will end after 2014) which were deals with Legendary Pictures and a certain actor and director by the name of Ben Affleck.

Over the past eight years, Legendary Pictures has delivered a list of successful films including the Batman trilogy, "300," "The Hangover" series, "42," and "Inception," four of which were Christopher Nolan films.

Christopher Nolan is gone. It's not impossible, but highly unlikely Nolan will carry on with the "Justice League" film. Zack Snyder is clearly at the helm now with writer David S. Goyer, and Goyer has always been the heart driving the stories behind these films.

2. Legendary giving up Batman Vs. Superman needed a strong response

batman superman logoSince the split, Legendary and WB have been dividing up future films.

While movies "Pacific Rim" and "Godzilla" will be staying with Warner Bros, "Seventh Son" starring Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore will be heading to Universal.

The most interesting tidbit from the divorce is that Legendary gave up its "Man of Steel" sequel in order to keep its name on Christopher Nolan's upcoming "Interstellar" project.

It appears that "Interstellar" is more important to Legendary than a Batman / Superman film, which is worrying for Batfans.

Warner Brothers likely had to attach as big of a name as possible to the Batman vs. Superman mashup to keep worries about franchise direction from hurting the film's and series' prospects. Since Affleck brings a few Oscars and top films into the mix, that certainly helps.

3. Affleck is a proven talent who has worked for the company

ben affleck batmanWorking relationships matter. In Affleck, Warner Bros. turned to someone it has a really good working relationship and track record with. That happens to be "Argo" director Affleck.

Affleck's been previously attached to Batman. His name was also rumored to originally direct the "Justice League" film as early as last year.

Grabbing Affleck seems like a safe bet for Warner Bros. as opposed to taking a risk with other actors as the Caped Crusder.

The man has a huge resume of both acting and directing. He's got star power. He could move into a larger role in the new direction in the future, and he's a safe pick considering his relationship with Warner Brothers.

If all of these reasons translate into a great or good movie/franchise remains to be seen. Batfans, stay tuned.

Russian Soldiers Simply Rock This Rendition Of Adele's 'Skyfall'

There are more than a few ironies here: singing Russian soldiers, Russian soldiers singing a James Bond theme, it being one of the best we've heard in a while.

These guys totally rock it.

From The Telegraph:

Led by a soloist who looked barely old enough to be in uniform, the soldiers gave such a stirring rendition of the song that by the end the presenters were swaying to the music and a female presenter confessed that the women in production crew had been sent into palpitations by the dashing “hussars.”

Founded in 1928, Russia’s military choir is better known for military classics like Katjusha, which tells the tale of a military wife yearning for her husband at the front.

NYC's Soho House Held A Lottery To Pick Which Members Could Attend A Wild Mumford & Sons Show Last Night

I am a big Mumford & Sons fan. I even went to see them a few months ago when the group played the Barclays center.

I am also a member of the Soho House, so when the club sent out an email earlier this week stating that the group would be performing on their rooftop two days later as part of a 10-year anniversary celebration, I cleared my calendar.

Only problem is that the roof can't accommodate every single NYC member, so the club held a lottery.

Spoiler alert: I didn't win.

But a lot of other people did get the golden ticket and so I had to live vicariously through them on social media:

J. Crew's President and Creative Director Jenna Lyons watched from a swan in the pool.

Watch video of the band playing below:

And then John Legend came out:

Here are a few other celebs who were in attendance. They clearly did not have to enter a lottery:

Robert Pattinson may be the star of the super successful film franchise "Twilight," but that doesn't mean he is enjoying the subsequent celebrity.

“It’s strange, you don’t have a normal life anymore," Pattinson tells Spanish GQ of becoming a teen heartthrob. "You spend much time trying to fight it, but in the end you find another way to live. People don’t realize how lonely you are."

Aww, we're sure there are millions of teen girls willing to keep Pattinson company.

“When you become famous, it’s easy for some people to hate you just because you are famous,” adds 27-year-old the star. “That’s why, sometimes, you beat yourself up.”

But, Pattinson adds, "I feel fortunate because success didn’t reach me very young and, at least, I had the opportunity to have a life before.”

Pre-fame, Pattinson never believed he would reach the height of fame he currently has.

"I lived in a small apartment when the ["Twilight"] premiere arrived and didn’t even know if the sequels would be made,” he’s quoted as telling the magazine. “Then came the weekend of the premiere and it was, ‘Oops, now we must do the sequels.’”

5 Bands You Should Be Listening To This Weekend

deap vally

With so many great tracks and albums coming out every week, it’s sometimes difficult to keep up with all the news.

Lucky for you, we at FILTER love looking through everything to find some great new music amongst everything.

This week, we’re bringing you some smaller acts we think you will enjoy.

Deap Vally

If you want to start your day with the right amount of screeching blues rock ‘n’ roll, then you need to look no further than this LA duo. Their songs are hard-hitting and their performance is fierce. This balance results in music that is addictive enough to get your head slamming to the beats in the midst of a crowd. Just listen to “Baby I Call Hell” and let your body move the way music intended.

The Orwells

 The Orwells

To keep the hard-hitting rock going, then turn your attention to this punk group. Their music just calls for debauchery with the raw, coarse vocals and the guitar-driven instrumentals. Songs like “Mallrats (La La La)” pack a punch of energy that could very well cause someone to collapse at the last note from all the exertion.

American Authors

american authors

This Brooklyn band brings us some catchy pop rock tunes that are easy to remember and sing along to. Songs like “Believer” and “Best Day of My Life” have melodies that will keep a crowd clapping along with them. Yet this band can also create some mellow times that are perfect for those quiet, introspective days when you could use a song like “Keep Me Dreaming” to express everything for you.

Guards

guards

We’ve been listening to Guards for quite some time and so we were excited to see them making the festival rounds this year. Their debut album, In Guards We Trust, was filled with some dreamy tracks that can get one swaying and dancing as they balance between airy melodies and heavy powerpop tunes. It may be kind of an old one but “Ready To Go” is still one of our Guards essential listens.

Family Of The Year

family of the year

This LA-group really knows how to make pretty indie rock that is both captivating and memorable. They can range from wonderfully bouncy tracks like “St. Croix” to the slow and melodic beauty that is “Hero.”  The vocals soothe in every song and the layers of guitars, synths, and drums create a dynamic that suits them well in their performances, setting it up for one fun show.

Some people aren't happy with the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman and they want everyone to know.

Since Warner Bros. released the news, multiple petitions have sprung up online asking for Affleck to be ousted as the new Caped Crusader.

The most popular appears to be one on Change.org simply asking Warner Bros. the studio to "remove Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne in the Superman/Batman movie."

The petition has reached 9,000.

The best petition we've seen — which has since been removed — was one on WhiteHouse.gov asking for Obama to make it illegal for anyone besides Christian Bale to portray Batman for the next 200 years.

Most people holding a grudge are recalling Ben Affleck's last stint as blind superhero Daredevil.

Before we pile on, let's remember Affleck has done more since "Gigli" and "Daredevil."

Some of his more recent successes:

Everyone Was Also Furious With The Initial Casting Of Heath Ledger As The Joker

christian bale batman ben affleck

Warner Bros. is receiving a lot of flak through social media and petitions for its casting choice of Ben Affleck as the next Batman

We get it.

He's not Christian Bale. He's not Christopher Nolan's Batman.

He's not the actor who brought in nearly $2.5 billion in ticket sales for Warner Bros over the course of three films.

However, people's irate reactions to Warner Bros. choice for the next Caped Crusader sound awfully familiar.

Remember when Heath Ledger was first cast as Batman's arch-nemesis the Joker for Christopher Nolan's 2008 "The Dark Knight" sequel?the dark knight jokerThe Internet hated that decision.

After Jack Nicholson played the iconic role in 1989, no one seemed good enough to take on the role of the Clown Prince of Crime.

Ledger then immersed himself so extremely into the role, locking himself in his hotel room for weeks on end, according to his father.

The result was by far the best performance of the Joker.

Before the film's 2008 release, Ledger died at 28 from an accidental prescription drug overdose

The actor went on to posthumously win a bittersweet Academy Award for his role as a chaos-creating, captivating Joker, the first for which any superhero film has ever received an award for its acting.

Last year, GeekTyrant compiled a bunch of Internet reactions to Ledger's casting decision as Batman's main arch-nemesis The Joker.

Here's a sample of reactions:

"I am NOT seeing this movie if he is in it. There are over a million better choices."

"Heath Ledger? A joker? I don't think so."

"And now begins the second downfall of the Batman series … the film after this will probably introduce Robin … then Batgirl!"

"Probably thé worst casting of all time."

"Yeah great, Jokeback Mountain."

Here's one more

"He's not exactly comic-book material, and he has to fill the impossible-to-fill shoes of Jack Nicholson, who will always be the guy most associated with The Joker."

Even Nicholson himself told MTV in late 2007 that he was furious not only over Ledger's casting but that he was never reached for the 2008 sequel.

Batfans, we hear you, but let's not rush to judgment.

Model Bar Refaeli Demands Roger Waters Stop Using Her Photo In Anti-Israel Concerts

Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli was another face in the crowd at a Roger Waters concert in 2011, when she noticed a picture of herself on the wall.

Thrilled to be recognized by the former Pink Floyd frontman, Refaeli tweeted: "Crazy thing... Went to the Roger Waters show in Paris, and saw a pic of myself on the wall!!! #respect!!! I'm honoured [sic]," according to the Daily Telegraph.

The 28-year-old supermodel changed her tune after Waters sparked outrage among Jewish groups earlier this summer, the Daily Mail is reporting.

Waters, a known activist who supports a boycott of Israel, released a pig-shaped balloon marked with the Star of David into the sky during a concert in July. The Belgium show kicked off his European tour.

Inflatable pigs have been a staple prop of Pink Floyd concerts since the release of the "Animals" album in 1977. After Waters left the band in 1985, he continued to showcase them during solo performances.

roger waters inflatable pig star of david concert belgiumThe pig launched into the Belgium arena depicted the Star of David juxtaposed with symbols of organizations and regimes from around the world.

“[The Star of David] was the only religious-national symbol which appeared among other symbols for fascism, dictatorships and oppression of people,” Alon Onfus Asif, an Israeli living in Belgium, told ynetnews.com. “Waters crossed the line and gave expression to an anti-Semitic message, beyond all his messages of anti-militancy.”

Supermodel Refaeli seemed compelled to agree, demanding via Twitter that Waters remove her picture from the concert prop wall.

She tweeted in Hebrew:

The Daily Mail translated Refaeli's tweet as, "Roger Waters, you better take my picture off of the video art at your shows. If you're boycotting - go all the way."

Waters — a seven-year supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS), a non-violent movement that opposes Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and fights for Palestinian human rights — defended the pig in an open letter on his Facebook page.

"Like it or not, the Star of David represents Israel and its policies and is legitimately subject to any and all forms of non violent protest," Waters wrote. "To peacefully protest against Israel’s racist domestic and foreign policies is NOT ANTI-SEMITIC."

Waters also noted that this particular pig has appeared at approximately 193 shows since 2010, and the concertgoer Asif's complaint is "the first."

This isn't the first time Refaeli has been at the center of controversy concerning her home country.

In March, the Israeli Defense Force slammed the Israeli Foreign Ministry for picking Refaeli as the face of its new ad campaign, because she evaded serving Israel's mandatory, two-year military service.

The Sports Illustrated bikini model married a friend because married women are exempt from the draft. She divorced after receiving her exemption.
