How Predictive Analytics Is Changing Hollywood

This post is sponsored by SAP.

Hollywood film executives often wrestle with the decision of whether or not to back a film with blockbuster potential. It may seem promising if hot directors love the script and major stars are interested in it, too. But in Hollywood, there are no guarantees. That project you're thinking of green lighting could wind up being a hit — or it could be a career-destroying flop.

With films often costing $150 million and up, film studios need a better way than gut feelings to ensure they get their money back. Just look at last year's "John Carter" (which lost some $200 million for its investors) and it's easy to understand why. That's the reason many producers are moving beyond intuition and focus-group research and starting to turn to predictive analytics.

Predictive analytics identifies patterns in past data. For example, if a proposed script is a raucous comedy about a wedding aboard a cruise ship, the data process can take into account information on how well recent comedies have done, while adding in box office receipts for previous wedding films. Programmers would also include information on movies that took place aboard cruise ships, along with the track records of the potential stars and the director. The more data that's added, the more accurate the predictions will be. Analysts may even include data taken from user comments on YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook.

So-called script evaluators can also suggest changes to a script, such as that cruise ship comedy not including a scene set in a bowling alley — movies with bowling alley scenes tend not to do well, script evaluator Vinny Bruzzese told the New York Times. Entire characters can also be rewritten to reflect the latest data. Are vampires still a good bet? Look to predictive analytics to find out.

Ultimately, predictive analytics can give filmmakers the ability to make smarter decisions and have a better idea of how much money their films will make well before they're released. That could mean fewer bombs and more films that audiences would actually want to see.

In the meantime, though, we may still have to slog through long Saturday nights watching films that should never have been made.

The Greatest Martial Arts Fight Scene Ever Filmed

$
0
0

2011 gave us one of the best martial arts movies in the last decade. The Raid: Redemption has a fairly simple premise: A SWAT team is sent to an apartment complex in Jakarta's slums to oust the crime lord that has it in it's grip. Previous attempts by both the police and rival gangs have failed.

The 101-minute movie, which is violent pretty much from the start through the end, plays out in the apartment complex.

The Raid sees Welsh director Gareth Evans reunite with Indonesian actor Iko Uwais. The two had previously worked together on a 2009 film called Merantu, which is credited with bringing Indonesian martial arts, specifically silat, back to the forefront.

The Raid has been criticized for having a threadbare plot and minimal character development. Roger Ebert gave the move 1 star out of 4, writing, "Have you noticed how cats and dogs will look at a TV screen on which there are things jumping around? It is to that level of the brain's reptilian complex that the film appeals."

We have to disagree. Not with the argument that there isn't much of a plot. But more to the point that it's just "things jumping around" which is well, downright derisive.

The Raid, again puts silat and Iko Uwais on display. Silat is an aggressive, joint-breaking fighting style and often involves the use of knives and we see some truly creative fight sequences through the movie. And much of the choreography for the fight scenes was done by Iko Uwais who plays good cop "Rama", and Yayan Ruhian who plays "Mad Dog," one of the crime lords top henchmen.

There were clearly some great contenders from The Raid: Redemption. For instance, the machete fight scene, the drug lab scene, or  the fight between Jaka and Mad Dog that incorporates both Silat and judo. But we picked the final fight, which draws on a common trope in martial arts movies i.e. two good guys take on one bad guy, though it's arguable if Andi, played by Donny Alamsyah, is good.

Some whinge about the fight being too long and lacking the flourish of some of the other scenes, but that's part of the reason it's great.

Mad Dog doesn't like using weapons. He lives for hand-to-hand combat. At one point in the movie, he  puts down a gun and says, "I've never really liked using these. They take away the rush. Squeezing a trigger, its like ordering take out. This is the thing. This is the pulse. This is what I do." He clearly enjoys both fighting and killing people.

Watching him and Rama go against each other in a nearly six-minute fight fast-pace, brutal fight is pretty epic.

Below we break down the fight, and explain why it's so epic. WARNING: It's very violent, so if violent martial arts on the screen isn't your thing, then you should probably click away.

The Raid redemption

Unlike many of the other fight scenes in the movie that include chases in and out of corridors and rooms, this fight is contained to this one grungy, bare room.

theraid1

Some great blocks from Mad Dog as Rama and Andi try to corner him with kicks.

raid redemption

And as many have noted, what's great is that the director didn't resort to the shaky-camera effect (that for instance became wearisome in the Bourne movies) and a bunch of wire tricks, though those can be great when used sparingly.

raid redemption

Love the capoeira-like choreography for these kicks.

raid redemption

Extremely painful to watch.

raid redemption

We're not sure what to call this but you can watch it over and over again.

tumblr_m57jkrzttK1r836szo1_500

This is probably one of the best sequences in the fight scene. Rama delivers a joint snapping blow to each of Mad Dog's arms (the sound effects are pretty intense), he follows it up with a quick succession of jabs to the chest, a painful looking choke-hold, a spin, only to then snap his back.

raid redemption

And he finishes it by using the light bulb fragment lodged in Mad Dog's throat to slice through his jugular. (The gurgling sound is pretty awful.)

the raid redemption

Bonus: A brutal scene from the Machete fight in which Rama kills one of the gang members.

'Paranoia' Is Harrison Ford's Biggest Box-Office Bomb Ever — Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

gary oldman angry face paranoia

We knew Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman's "Paranoia" action thriller wasn't going to do well in theaters; however, no one predicted it would do this poorly.

Despite the success of Weinstein Company's "The Butler," the big news of the weekend are the many shortcomings.

BoxOffice.com estimated the Harrison and Oldman's film about the two going head to head (with Liam Hemsworth as a pawn) would earn as little as $6 million

Instead, the film will end up the worst wide box-office release for the trio and one of the biggest losers of the summer.

"Kick-Ass 2" and "jOBS" didn't fare much better with both suffering from dismal reviews.

Out of the top ten this week is Adam Sandler's "Grown Ups 2" which has earned $172 million after six weeks and Warner Bros. successful horror flick "The Conjuring." The flick has grossed nearly $200 million worldwide with most of that money coming domestically.

The last film out of the top spots is Universal's most profitable film to date, "Despicable Me 2," which has gone on to earn nearly $800 million.

Here are this week's winners and losers in Hollywood:

10. Hugh Jackman's "The Wolverine" drops three spots with $4.4 million. The Fox film has earned nearly double of its money overseas with a total haul of $335 million. Jackman will next appear in the "X-Men" film set for next summer.

9. "The Smurfs 2" may be bringing in a meager $4.4 million domestically in week three, but the Sony/Columbia Picture's film is overseas. The film has earned more than $206 million worldwide with 72.5% of its earnings coming from foreign box office. A third film has already been discussed.

8. Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington's "2 Guns" drops more than 50% in ticket sales earning $5.6 million in week three. After debuting to $27 million, the Universal film has still failed to earn back its estimated $61 million production budget. Of course, Universal has had two of the biggest movies of the summer with "Fast & Furious 6" and "Despicable Me 2."

7. After debuting to poor reviews, "jOBS" opened to a weak $6.7 million. The Open Road Films movie cost $12 million to make. AaronSorkin has his on Jobs movie expected to be released next year.

6. Fox's "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" sequel dropped nearly 42% in its second weak with $8.4 million. The film earned less than half of the original 2010 flick opening weekend ($14 million vs $31 million).

5. Disney's "Cars" spinoff "Planes" earns $13.1 million in week two. Most people are probably under the impression the film is also from Pixar when it actually comes from Disney Toons. The film was originally planned as a straight-to-video release. What's most notable is that while this film is an easy money maker for Disney, it is already faring better than DreamWorks Animation's latest dud, "Turbo."

4."Kick-Ass 2" grossly underperformed earning $13.57 million in its opening weekend. It earned significantly less than the 2010 film which premiered to $19.8 million.

3. Neil Blomkamp's futuristic "Elysium" switches spots with Jennifer Aniston's comedy in its second week earning another $13.6 million. Blomkamp's followup to his 2009 film "District 9," was well on its way to $100 million domestically by week two. "Elysium" should hit $100 million worldwide this week.

2. Finally, a box-office hit for Jennifer Aniston. "We're the Millers" has a good second week with $17.8 million. The film, which cost Warner Bros. an estimated $37 million to make, has earned nearly $70 million in two weeks.

1. It's Weinstein Company's "The Butler"* that stole the weekend with $25 million. Lee Daniels' film based on a "true life" story was originally scheduled for an October release before being smartly moved up to an emptier movie month. No doubt that the Warner Bros.'/Weinstein title spat inadvertently helped boost publicity and knowledge for the film, along with Oprah Winfrey's public appearances.

*We know the title has been technically changed to "Lee Daniels' The Bulter," but let's be honest, it's one of the silliest forced and unfortunate title changes childishly enforced by Warner Bros and the MPAA.

'Breaking Bad' Stuns Again With Another Incredible Episode

skyler walt breaking bad

After last week's record-breaking return of "Breaking Bad"left us on a cliffhanger, the newest episode finally gave us the first big White-Schrader family showdown we've all been waiting for.

The episode wasn't so much an action-packed heart stopper as much as it set us up for what's to come as Walter White's meth empire begins to crumble.

Season 5, episode 10 "Buried" followed a lot of Walt's preliminary steps to protect himself from getting caught by Hank and the cops.

Mostly "Buried" was a huge Skyler-centric episode about Walt's wife (Anna Gunn) deciding her loyalties.

For those who aren't particular Skyler fans, you may have just earned some respect for her, as there were some great scenes between both her and Hank (Dean Norris), Marie (Betsy Brandt), and Walt (Bryan Cranston).

Here are the big takeaways from the latest episode.

Warning: If you're not caught up with "Breaking Bad," there are plenty of spoilers.

1. Say hello to Mrs. Heisenberg (Skysenberg)

We didn't see this coming.

After Hank and Walt's epic confrontation last week, it was a race between the DEA cop and meth lord to get the attention of Walt's wife Skyler first. (After all, Hank realizes she must know about Walt's illegal operation.) Unfortunately for the kingpin, Hank got Skyler on the phone and asked her to meet at an undisclosed location.

Just when we thought Skyler was about to give up Walt's meth business to Hank — remember, this is a woman who earlier this season (Season 5, Episode 4) wished for her husband's cancer to come back — she claims loyalty to her kingpin meth cook husband! (Once you dip your feet in the chocolately river of meth, there's no going back.)

Hank clearly wants to do right by his sister-in-law, he offers protection for the kids and wants her help in putting "that animal away," but it's a little-too clear that Hank may be more interested in just getting Walt rather than Skyler's own safety. After all, she should probably consult a lawyer first.

am i under arrest skylerIn a moment that brought to mind a scene between Skyler and her sister Marie from earlier this season, Skyler got away from Hank by making a public scene, screaming out "Am I under arrest?" over and over again.

Not only did we see Skyler defend herself to her DEA brother-in-law, but she also went against her sister Marie by refusing to give up her husband. From the ensuing episode of "Talking Bad," a live discussion show on AMC covering the series, it's clear Skyler wants to tell Marie what happened, but can't out of respect for her husband.

However, the most transformative scene for Skyler occurred later in the episode during a conversation with her husband. She eerily echoed Walt's epic "tread lightly" line from last week when announcing that their best course together may be to stay quiet.

Forget Mrs. Heisenberg. Fans are calling her Skysenberg.

2. Marie slaps Skyler ...

We've never seen Betsy Brandt's character Marie get physical on the series, but when her sister Skyler refuses to open up to her about Walt's meth business — and knowing about it for a long time — she's had it.

marie slaps skyler breaking bad

3. ... and then goes back to her stealing ways.

In response to Skyler's silence to stand by her meth cook husband, Marie attempts to steal her sister's daughter Holly!

marie baby steal breaking bad

We've known Marie has been a kleptomaniac since she stole an expensive tiara in season one, so Twitter exploded in response to this scene.

4. Lydia is a force to be reckoned with ... along with Todd and his uncles.

lydia todd breaking bad

While the White-Schrader showdown continues, Lydia is figuring out what to do about her ever-increasing meth distribution problem. During the season's return premiere, she told Walt since he left the purity of meth cooked has decreased from 99.1% to 68% and increasingly lower.

To get standards back up, she calls in Todd and his fearsome uncles to get rid of the other cooks and take over.

We can't help but wonder if Walt shouldn't have been so dismissive of the petite brunette ... or if his wife should have been as threatening.

Creator Vince Gilligan says we'll soon find out how this plays into the larger picture of the show.

5. Jesse is a ticking time bomb ... for Walt.

After dishing out most of his $5 million around town, Jesse has been brought in for questioning by the police. At the end of the episode, we see Hank go to talk to Jesse.

We have to wait until next week to see if he breaks under pressure and gives up Walt. We already imagined Jesse could turn sides if he learns how much his former teacher has been lying to him.

Line of the night:

skyler am i under arrest

Bonus: Here are your new favorite lottery ticket numbers.

Fearing Hank's wrath, Walt buries all of his money in the desert — in the same spot as the pilot — and keeps track of the coordinates on a lottery ticket.

What did you think of this week's episode? Sound off in the comments below.

Until next week, tread lightly, folks.

Lindsay Lohan Admits To Oprah In First Interview: 'Yeah, I'm An Addict' [VIDEO]

Lindsay Lohan Oprah Winfrey Interview

After weeks of hype, Lindsay Lohan's first post-rehab interview with Oprah Winfrey finally aired last night on OWN.

During the hour-long “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” Lohan revealed "yeah" she's an addict, saying that she struggled mainly with alcohol.

The confession wasn't a surprise considering the actress' six attempts at rehab, but the 27-year-old did admit that alcohol "was a gateway to other things for me,” adding that she’s done cocaine 10 to 15 times.

The starlet explained, “It was like a party thing. People would have it and I would do it.” She also revealed that she was addicted to Adderall.

But now, Lohan assures us she is drug free. Well, except for vitamins!

Lohan tells Oprah that all of her troubles stem from her childhood.

“A lot of stuff went on when I was young with my family and I grew up in a very chaotic home,” she told Oprah. “Unfortunately, I waited too long to face it.”

Oprah tells Lohan she's addicted to chaos and the actress enthusiastically agrees, saying that her wild lifestyle became “comfortable” and “normal.”

So by the time she was sentenced to 90 days in jail in 2010, Lohan says “I somewhere inside knew and kind of wanted to go to jail, just to find some peace and have no choice but to just sit and be.” (She was released after two weeks due to jail overcrowding.)

Reflecting on being tabloid fodder, Lohan said she “hates” being the symbol for “child star gone wrong,” noting, “It’s not what I ever aspired to be and it’s not what I want for my life.”

So what's different about Lohan's latest stint in rehab and why will she stay clean this time?

“I’ve lived so many lives in one lifetime as this point," she tells the big O. "And it’s not interesting me to anymore.”

Now watch the women discuss spirituality:

Here's How Much The Giant Pile Of Money On 'Breaking Bad' Is Worth

breaking bad money pile
Warning: Mini-spoilers ahead!

In season 5, episode 8 of "Breaking Bad," we learn that everyone's favorite meth cook Walter White has more than surpassed his season 1 goal of earning $737,000

He has so much money in various denominations of $20s, $50s, and $100s that his wife Skyler (Anna Gunn) has no idea how much he has earned.

"I rented this place and I started bringing it here because ... I didn't know what else to do. I gave up counting it. I had to. It was just so much, so fast. I tried weighing it. I figured one bill of any denomination weighs a gram. There are 454 grams to a pound, but there's a variety of denominations."

Instead, she just started stacking it in a storage unit.

During last night's episode we see Saul's goons Huell (Lavell Crawford) and Kuby (Bill Burr) rolling around on the giant pile of money before placing it into giant barrels Walt takes into the desert to bury.

huell money breaking bad

Exactly how much money is in the pile?

For eagle-eye viewers, AMC discreetly revealed just how much money Walt has earned in a behind-the-scenes video showing the making of season 5, episode 10.

The about section for the video reads:

"Welcome back to Tohajiilee! The cast and crew of Breaking Bad shows you how to bury 80 million dollars in the desert."

Baseball America writer and editor J.J. Cooper predicted back in September depending on denomination the amount of money is most likely between $17 and $25.5 million. If all bills were $100 — which we've clearly seen they are not — TV.com predicted the pile could equate to $80 million.

Show creator Vince Gilligan has previously told TV.com $80 million would be too large of an amount for the money pile, but that it has been the estimated amount.

"I asked prop master Mark Hansen, and he and his guys had tried, just for their own edification, to figure out how much that would be if it was roughly a half-and-half mix of twenties and fifties, and he guessed somewhere in the vicinity of eighty million dollars—eighty, eighty-five, ninety—that's a lotta dough. I don't know, we may have erred on the side of showmanship there instead of reality, I don't know if [Walt] could've made that much that quickly."

Entrepreneur Explains How To Make Hundreds Of Thousand Of Dollars Per Year Owning A Porn Site

$

porn strip shop

Right now the owner of a pornographic website is doing an AMA on Reddit, and the details behind his business are fascinating.

While we have no idea what the website itself is, we can ascertain a few things about the business model. Essentially people buy videos made by studios individually from the site, the proceeds of which are split between the studio and the site.

He claimed to clear $280,000 last year, so evidently people like to watch pornography on the internet. Who knew?

It's worked out, and the owner doesn't actually have to do much work anymore. It's fully automated. "For me," he said, "it made sense as a money generating asset requiring little effort beyond the initial build."

Most interesting of all was the advice the owner gave someone who wanted to start up their own site.

Here's how he explained the sunk costs of getting into the business to an aspiring porn-site entrepreneur:

Good luck with it. It's a challenging industry. Things that would take 20 minutes on a normal business can take days in the adult industry. (finding a payment processor, for example)

A redtube-style site would be quite a challenge, financially, I think. Policing it could also be pretty difficult.

The most expensive part, for me since I did all of my own design and programming, was getting VISA/MC approval for a high risk account. VISA has a $1000 annual fee and MC has a $500 annual fee, at least through my payment processor. [...]

You can make use of Amazon Web Services to lower costs substantially.

Up front the first hurdle is convincing Visa or MasterCard to let you accept payments. Still, that's not even the hardest part. Here's what it takes to get the site up and running:

If I calculated it in hours spent on it myself, looking at around 3 months, so we'll say 500 hours. I charge $65/h if I ever take on freelance clients, so looking at about $32000 for someone at my rate. I'm expensive because of my extensive experience, so you can probably get it done for less.

It was very difficult in the beginning. Luckily my consultant, the girl who convinced me to start the site, is a studio herself and knows a lot of the top studios. We went after the top studios and offered them better %s and it worked. We now have:

751 studios 19,138 videos Apx 5000 visits per day - A good number of which are sent directly from the studios to purchase on the site or send a tribute.

Most of the business, he said, comes from people buying between a dozen and thirty products per day, and then cash donation — 'tributes' — make up the other half of the business.

Here are the technical stats. As he said earlier, the entire operation is automated, with most of the hosting on an Amazon server:

The site itself runs on a single server, a VM actually. It runs PHP with CodeIgniter for the framework and MySQL as the database. I make extensive use of CodeIgniter's caching abilities.

I have an FTP server setup where the usernames and passwords are powered by MySQL. Each studio gets their own FTP login. I have a cronjob that will run every few minutes and pick up files that are finished uploading and send them to Amazon S3 after gathering some basic meta information.

Once the video is safely on S3, the studios can complete the meta data, pricing, and choose when the video goes live.

All the video previews and gifs are uploaded to S3 and served through AWS Cloudfront CDN.

That's about it. Pretty simple.

So if you've ever considered getting into the lucrative online pornography business, that's what you've got to handle first.

Bündchen, 32, holds the top spot for the seventh year in a row, earning seven times as much as second-place earner, Miranda Kerr, according to Forbes.

The Victoria's Secret model made $42 million in the last year, thanks to a partial stake in a Brazilian footwear company, Grendene, sales from her eco-friendly cosmetics company, Sejaa, and multi-year contracts with international campaigns with Pantene, Oral-B and Sky HDTV.

Bündchen and quarterback husband Tom Brady welcomed a daughter this year.

The list included seven Victoria's Secret Angels, including the brand's longest-running model and first model of Chinese descent.

Angel Miranda Kerr leapt five spots up the ranks, due in part from her expanding international portfolio.

New to the list is Puerto Rican model Joan Smalls, who posed for Chanel, Lacoste, and Calvin Klein Jeans and became the first Latina ambassador for Estee Lauder in 2011.

J.J. Abrams just released a mysterious new trailer for an upcoming project from his Bad Robot Company.

We have no idea what it is, but the title for it is called "Stranger."

The trailer shows a man washing up on shore, a nod to his popular ABC series "LOST," and a man with his lips sewn shut near its end.

Check it out below:

Here are a list of Abrams' future projects:

"Almost Human" (TV series)
Wunderkind (an upcoming film about Nazis)
"Star Wars: Episode VII"
"Cloverfield" sequel
"Portal"
"Half-Life"
"Mission: Impossible 5"
"Star Trek 3"

Looks pretty safe to eliminate "Star Wars," "MI5," and "Star Trek" from the list. We'd take out "Cloverfield" as well. What do you think?

Actor Lee Thompson Young, who played the title role on Disney's "The Famous Jett Jackson," is dead at age 29 after an apparent suicide.

"Lee Daniels' The Butler" may have had an excellent box-office weekend; however, the viewing experience wasn't a good one for everyone.

One couple complained about what appeared to be heightened security at a Regal Theater in Silver Spring, Maryland at a showing for "The Butler."

According to Tiffany Flowers and Alan Honson, there were police officers throughout the theater, with some ushering people into seating for "The Butler." The officers then continued to face the crowd while the film played.

Flowers first tweeted about the situation in the Maryland theater, before catching media attention.

First, here's Flowers' account of the situation Twitter.

Now, here's what Hanson had to say:

The couple says the audience for the film was predominantly African American.

"There were rumblings among the crowd of being profiled at the movies, and they must have thought this was going to be a particularly rowdy crowd," Flowers later told local ABC News outlet WJLA.

The Weinstein Company film starring Forrest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey was the top film at the box office this weekend earning $25 million. The film follows the life of butler Cecil Gaines (Whitaker) who served under eight presidencies.

There haven't been any reports of similar occurences in other theaters nationwide.

"They had what I thought were bulletproof vests," Hanson told ABC News. "They had sidearms. They looked serious."

Here's the ABC report:

Regal Cinemas responded with the following statement saying its protocol for sold out shows:

Regal Entertainment Group routinely employs security personnel to ensure the safety of all of our guests and staff. When a theatre experiences sold out showings of any feature, security will assist with crowd control and guest assistance throughout the facility, including auditoriums.

This weekend our Majestic theatre experienced a tremendous guest response to the feature 'Lee Daniels' The Butler' such that additional showtimes were added to meet our guests demands.

At no time last night did local management receive any guest complaints or concerns about our security or staff, who worked diligently to meet all of our guests needs.

To the extent any guests were disappointed with their experience, we welcome the opportunity to address their concerns and provide them the best entertainment experience possible in their future visits to our theatres.

Flowers later took to Twitter after speaking with a Regal Movies' manager.

All eyes have been on the Clarence House official royal twitter feed today ahead of the royal family's first family portrait release expected this afternoon.

But before that happened, the photos somehow hit Twitter and are now all over the internet.

Reporter Henry Meller was among the first to post the leaked portrait:

While it's only the second time new baby George Alexander Louis has been seen by the world, dog Lupo really steals the show.

Prince William recently gave his first interview to CNN since welcoming his son last month.

The new dad says "I was on such a high, and so was Katherine, that really we were happy to show him off to anyone who wanted to see him," regarding the media frenzy surrounding George's arrival.

Since then, William says George has been “a little bit of a rascal," explaining that “He’s a little fighter — he wriggles around quite a lot and he doesn’t want to go to sleep that much.”

See what else Prince William says about fatherhood below:

Authorities say a man has been found dead from a gunshot wound inside a South Florida home owned by "Grease" star Olivia Newton-John and her husband, John Easterling, reports the AP.

The man is reportedly a 42-year-old contractor employed by the actress at the Jupiter Inlet Colony home.

Jupiter Police spokesman Sgt. Scott Pascarella assured the local paper, the Palm Beach Post, that "The man is not related to the homeowners and does not live in the home."

Although the death appears to be a suicide, Pascarella said police are currently treating it as a death investigation.

The Palm Beach Post reports construction was being done on the home and one contractor was seen crying Monday afternoon after discovering the body.

Olivia Newton John and her husband were not at the Florida home at the time of the incident.

South Florida gossip site, GossipExtra, reported earlier this month that Rosie O’Donnell was under contract to buy the home. The contract was to be signed later this month after a round of inspections.
