Amanda Bynes Placed On Extended 30-Day Psychiatric Hold, Deemed 'Gravely Disabled'

Amanda Bynes wig

Amanda Bynes' doctors have extended her psychiatric hold for another 30 days.

"She was not well enough to leave the hospital to attend today's hearing, where her parents are trying to win a temporary conservatorship," reports TMZ.

The site adds, "According to the law, doctors can only get such an order if the patient is 'gravely disabled as a result of a mental disorder.'"

Bynes was initially hospitalized on a 5150, 72-hour psychiatric hold after starting a fire in a stranger's driveway last month. The 72-hour hold was extended to two weeks, which has just been extended another 30 days.

Bynes' parents will still reportedly pursue a temporary conservatorship, which would allow them to control their daughter's finances until she is well.

Emma Roberts Tried And Failed To Cut The Massive Cronut Line

Half croissant, half donut, cronuts are fully the rage in New York City.

With lines down the block, this Dominique Ansel bakery sweet treat is a hot commodity — even for VIP celebrities like Emma Roberts.

The 22-year-old actress went to the Soho bakery Thursday and tried to cut the line, only to be turned away by a security doorman (yes, doorman).

You can check out pics of Roberts being turned away, but she later recounted the story while appearing on "Late Night" with Jimmy Fallon, pleading innocence.

"Today I went to the bakery to get a cronut and I was like 'oh my god, there's no line' and I walk in and they're like 'Um, the line is actually down the block,'" Roberts told the late night host. "So I walked out and went to the end of the line and waited and waited and then they were like 'Sorry, there are no more cronuts. They were out of cronuts!"

Luckily, Fallon just so happened to have a cronut on hand to surprise his guest. Watch below:

Apparently Roberts isn't the only celebrity cronut fan.

Heidi Klum, too, posted a photo this week saying, "Flying back home with a box of for my loved ones." It's good to be a cronut!

'Breaking Bad' Meth Should Be Yellow

Blue Meth Breaking Bad

The iconic blue methamphetamine created by Walter White on the AMC show Breaking Bad should have been yellow, chemist Donna Nelson, a researcher at the University of Oklahoma and the show's science advisor, told Vulture. Impurities in the meth — which when pure would be clear — would more likely make it yellow, not blue, Nelson said: "When you crystallize anything that’s colorless, which methylamine crystals are, they usually come out with a yellow tinge because of impurities."

Another article, on Heisenberg's Chemistry, says that methamphetamine should be a white powder or a clear crystal.

It's possible that the chemical reaction that White uses in the show creates a byproduct that is blue, and if not fully separated from the resulting meth could twinge its color, but that doesn't seem likely from the P2P chemical reaction — which you can find online.

No recipes we found mention a blue byproduct, and chemist/blogger Puff The Mutant Dragon says "High-purity meth is clear in color. A blue tint suggests an impurity, but there’s no impurities in the P2P process Walter is using that should color his final product blue. Is Walter deliberately adding a dash of something else? The show doesn’t say."

In 2009 and 2010, cops did find blue meth on the streets of Kansas City, and in California, Washington, and Texas. But the color was created with blue dye or blue chalk, not a blue byproduct from the chemical reaction.

Even if the blue was a byproduct of the reaction, it shouldn't have been so bright, Nelson said. If White's product is 99% pure, that only leaves 1% to provide coloring. So, Nelson said, White's meth's "blue was a little too blue."

A 2008 study published in the American Journal of Addiction, found colored meth in the streets of Tijuana: clear (50%), white (47%), yellow (2%), and pink (1%). When injected, the yellow and pink were more dangerous and were more likely to cause abscesses, which means they had impurities or were adulterated with other chemicals.

Another problem with White's cook? As it's written in the literature, it would have created a mixture of two kinds of methamphetamine that are mirror opposites — d-methaphmetamine and l-methamphetamine. The D is the one that gets you high, because L doesn't bind to your brain's dopamine receptors as well.

According to the Breaking Bad wiki White may have devised some clever way to get around this issue:

It is also possible, however, that Walt devised a method (not shown onscreen) for making the P2P process chirally selective and thus producing nearly 100% d-methamphetamine. This is strongly implied when Walt asks Victor, "And if our reduction is not stereospecific, then how can our product be enantiomerically pure?" ("Box Cutter").

Breaking Bad is returning this Sunday Aug. 11 for the final episodes of Season Five. We are hoping for even more science in these final episodes.

BRIAN STELTER: CNN Was Brilliant To Cover The 'Poop Cruise,' The Jury's Still Out On Jeff Zucker

0

Back in April, we asked star New York Times media reporter Brian Stelter what grade he would give CNN's new boss, the celebrated former NBC executive, Jeff Zucker.

Brian gave Zucker a "C."

Yesterday, we asked Brian whether he has updated this assessment now that he has seen more of Zucker's work--and now that he's a guest host of CNN's "Reliable Sources."

We also asked Brian about CNN's obsessive coverage of the "Poop Cruise." Was that what we should expect more of during the Zucker regime?

Homeland Season 3 Trailer

Showtime released the official trailer for the third season of "Homeland" today and with just under two months to go until the September 29 premier, fans are salivating for answers.

Season 2 ended with one of the greatest twists of all time, lulling viewers into a false sense of lovey-dovey security before literally blowing up the entire CIA.

Set to the melancholy tune of "To Build a Home" by the Cinematic Orchestra, the new trailer is light on the words and heavy on the drama. Carrie and Saul testify before a Senate hearing on the attack at the CIA, a bald, wounded Brody fires a machine gun from a moving Jeep, and Dana goes topless to engage in Muslim prayer.

There are a million questions and the answers can't come soon enough. Is Carrie being institutionalized? Is Brody's bald head by choice, or is he sick? Who is Jessica kissing? What's Saul apologizing for?

It will all be guess work until the season premier. Watch the full trailer below and come up with your own theories.

Who do rappers call when in a pinch? That's right, their Jewish lawyers.

Or so proved Slacktory, a website that created an epic video of all of the instances in which rappers have thanked their Jewish lawyers in song.

Chicago rapper Chief Keef brags, "Bodies drop we beat the case/My Jew lawyer defeat the case," while Drake sings "I got a Jewish lawyer as my lead defender/A mitchkeit as they say he's a legal bender."

Even Jay-Z raps on "No Hook": "Had to get some challah bread so you can holla back and holla that/My Jewish lawyer too enjoyed the fruit of letting my cash stack."

The only rapper who doesn't sing positively about having a Jewish lawyer is Fabolous, who sings: "Gun charge, oh yeah, I had like two/My black lawyer beat them, never had a Jew."

Jennifer Aniston's 7 Worst Box Office Bombs Since 'Friends'

0
0

wanderlust jennifer aniston

Around the time "Friends" ended its seven-season run in 2004, Jennifer Aniston was Hollywood's golden girl.

Her rom-com blockbusters "Along Came Polly" and "Bruce Almighty" performed well with critics and in theaters. The latter, headlined by Jim Carrey, raked in $484 million worldwide.

Then an unfortunate string of flops began — enough to earn Aniston the label "box office poison."

Her latest movie, "We're the Millers," about a group of misfits who pose as an all-American family to move a large shipment of marijuana into the U.S., may give Aniston's movie career the second wind it needs.

Co-starring Jason Sudeikis, Emma Roberts, and Ed Helms, "We're the Millers" opened in theaters late Tuesday night and racked up $6.8 million so far. Despite less than thrilling reviews from critics, it's expected to gross between $35 and $38 million through the weekend.

Here are the misses that led up to Aniston's "We're the Millers" redemption.

7. "Derailed" (2005)

Worldwide Lifetime Gross:$57 million

Production Budget:$22 million

Gain: $35 million

Rotten Tomatoes score:20%

Aniston appeared alongside Clive Owen in this psychological thriller about a love affair gone wrong.

With a ludicrous plot and obvious twist, "'Derailed' is an uncomfortably appropriate title," one critic wrote.

6. "The Switch" (2010)

Worldwide Lifetime Gross:$49 million

Production Budget:$19 million

Gain: $30 million

Rotten Tomatoes score:51%

Aniston plays a character with no husband or boyfriend, who's fighting the clock to have children. Jason Bateman co-stars.

To put into perspective how bad it was, a "Twilight" parody movie beat it at the box office.

5. "Love Happens" (2009)

Worldwide Lifetime Gross:$36 million

Production Budget:$18 million

Gain: $18 million

Rotten Tomatoes score:17%

The author of a self-help book about grieving (Aaron Eckhart) falls for a florist (Aniston) while dealing with the loss of his wife.

The New York Times called the movie's vital signs, "faint."

5 Bands You Should Be Listening To This Weekend

icona popWith so many great tracks and albums coming out every week, it’s sometimes difficult to keep up with all the news.

Lucky for you, we at FILTER love looking through everything to find some great new music amongst everything.

This week some old and new favorites brought us some new music we were excited to listen to, so we’re here to share them with you!

Icona Pop – “All Night”

No summer playlist is complete without a bit of Icona Pop and to change things up a bit, they released this little dance number. It’s perfect to get any night started in high spirits and keep the energy going straight into the next season.

Yuck – “Rebirth”

yuck

For those times when you’re looking for a little shoegaze rock, you need to look no further than Yuck’s latest track. Max Bloom’s vocals take a dreamy turn behind the ambient sounds of the guitar and synths. It is easy to get lost in that whirlwind of sound and really after listening to it, you won’t want to find your way out of it.

INVSN – “The Promise”

invsn

This wonderful track balances somewhere between the upbeat and the melancholy. The lyrics are a little more honest and raw and the vocals sort of express that emotion with longing. Yet, it lingers in a sort of more upbeat tune that it’s difficult to not get completely sucked in to the song as a whole.

Dr. Dog – “The Truth”

dr dog

The band takes on a soulful mood with this song and it really suits them well. There is a smooth groove to it that just draws one into a little slow dance. You can swing to it easily and the breezy vocals take the listener back to the chill times of an older decade.

Elvis Costello & The Roots – “Walk Us Uptown”

elvis costello

This has got to be one of our favorite collaborations and they really did not disappoint with the release of their first track. Costello’s jagged croon takes on center stage while accompanied by a jazzy sort of melody. It is a laid-back sort of tune that one can just swing to over and over again.

Here's Why Professional Gaming Is Just As Cool As Other Sports [PHOTOS]

mlg interview

Professional gaming has become a huge phenomena over the last few years.

What was originally an industry focused around StarCraft competitions in South Korea has blossomed into an international series of leagues and tournaments that allow gamers to earn real money playing the games they love.

But most people have no idea what a professional gaming event would look like. Many assume that it's just a bunch of people playing online for money. It's not like they need a whole stadium like other sports, right?

The reality is that these events are a lot closer to those of other sports than you probably realize.

One might think that gaming events are just teens in fedoras sitting at computers, intensely focusing on the game at hand

But they're actually huge events with massive venues

With audiences captivated by the the competition

A Psychopath Expert's View On Dexter

0
0

DexterI've met many psychopaths over the years, and many aspects of this TV show ring true. In the first series, we discover that Dexter Morgan's violent tendencies first came out in childhood, when he would murder neighbourhood pets. Cruelty to animals is indeed one of the first signs of a psychopath: it springs from their lack of empathy.

Also, just like most psychopaths, Dexter is incredibly charming and a master of concealment. Think of all those serial killers who manage to kill over and over, undetected.

Not all psychopaths are as intelligent as Dexter, though. A psychopath with violent tendencies, a poor upbringing and limited education might end up as a thug or an enforcer for a criminal gang. An intelligent, violent one with a good education might end up as a top CEO, a lawyer, or a serial killer.

There are a few anomalies, however. The voiceover that runs through each episode, with Dexter analysing his actions, strikes me as unlikely. Most psychopaths aren't interested in applying that degree of self-knowledge. And he seems very attached to his family, especially his sister, which is unusual.

That said, some psychopaths are definitely able to compartmentalise their violent tendencies: the Kray twins were very attached to their mother. In fact, some interesting research from the Netherlands has indicated that psychopathic criminals may be able to access a sort of "empathy switch", enabling them to feel for some people, and not at all for others.

I met Michael C Hall, the actor who plays Dexter, during a book tour in America. I can safely say there's nothing psychopathic about him. But I did ask him which aspects of Dexter he'd most like to carry into his own personality. "His coolness under pressure," he said.

That coolness is one of the reasons why we're so fascinated by psychopaths: unlike the rest of us, they operate with complete impunity; they just don't care what people think. In this age of 24/7 surveillance, we find that sense of freedom hugely appealing – even if we're sure we'd never be violent ourselves.

• Dexter is on Fox at 9pm on Sundays. Professor Dutton is a research psychologist at the University of Oxford and the author of The Wisdom of Psychopaths.

Matt Damon Disses Obama: 'He Broke Up With Me'

Matt Damon has been everywhere this week promoting his new film "Elysium," but the actor really decided to shake things up by dissing President Obama in a recent interview with BET.

"You've been critical of President Obama in the past," stated the interviewer during a press junket. "How do you feel he's doing in a second term?"

"He broke up with me," the actor laughed.

But then, seriously, Damon says, "There are a lot of things that I really question, you know: the legality of the drone strikes, and these NSA revelations.”

The 42-year-old actor continues, “He’s got some explaining to do, particularly for a constitutional law professor.”

Damon says he also disagrees with Florida's legal system and the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial.

"I wish they would revisit the stand your ground law," says the "Elysium" star. "I lived in Florida for five years and we can't have a world where people are putting guns in their pockets and walking around thinking they're the neighborhood watch."

"We have a police force for that," says Damon. "So we should leave the novices at home."

Injuries Haven't Stopped These 16 Stars From Staying In The Spotlight [PHOTOS]

Mariah Carey sling

Mariah Carey made a fashion statement recently when rocking custom-made, bedazzled and feathered slings for her dislocated shoulder.

The diva successfully made something functional, fashionable.

But Mariah isn't the first celebrity to wear a sling — or cast or crutches  while performing, on the red carpet, or at high profile events.

Everyone from Kristen Stewart to David Beckham has made injuries look good.

Kristen Stewart headed down the red carpet on crutches after she "sliced her foot" as Jennifer Garner walked behind her at the Academy Awards in 2013.

Brad Pitt arrived at the 2012 Critics' Choice Awards in Los Angeles, cane in hand, after he slipped carrying his daughter down a hill. “It was either her or me," he said of his injured ACL.

Jessie J performed with a broken foot at the Glastonbury Festival in 2011. The singer injured her left foot when she fell off a stage during rehearsal a few weeks prior.

'Breaking Bad' Makes An Epic Return With 'Blood Money' Premiere Episode

0

Breaking Bad Season Five Episode Nine

We just finished watching the second-half premiere of "Breaking Bad" season five, episode 9 "Blood Money," and boy, did it not disappoint.

First a warning: There are major spoilers beyond this point. You've been warned.

Just as last season started with a flash-forward to Walt on the run, "Blood Money" begins with a scene showing the White home in ruins and Walt sporting a full head of hair and a beard. Right off the bat, we know something is going to go terribly wrong for Walt this season.

After the flashforward, the Bryan Cranston directed episode jumps to the final shocking moment from last season: Hank finding the Walt Whitman book from Gale and coming to the realization that Walt is the infamous meth cook, "Heisenberg."

Hank has a panic attack while driving home (understandably so) and goes to the hospital. Then we see him at his best in a montage where he gathers all of the Heisenberg evidence from the last several seasons and begins connecting the dots.

Cut to Jesse smoking at home with his former dealers. Badger makes an amazing pitch for an episode of "Star Trek" that was both hilarious and actually sounds like a fantastic idea. Viewers on Twitter couldn't stop raving about it:

In a scene that was way too short for fans who haven't seen everyone's favorite crooked lawyer in nearly a year, Jesse pays Saul Goodman a visit and tells him he wants to give away the $5 million Walt brought him at the end of the last season.

Walt shows up at Jesse's home with the bags of cash and tells him to keep the money. Jesse lets him know that he believes Walt killed Mike. Walt does his usual thing and lies through his teeth, saying he has no idea where Mike is but that he believes that he is alive.

But the final scene of the episode is where it really ramps up.

Walt gets sick and we see that he's back on medication. He realizes that his Walt Whitman book is missing. Uh oh. Paranoid, he feels underneath his car and finds a GPS tracking device like the one Hank had him put on Gus's car back in season four. Double uh oh.

Jesse, distraught, drives around throwing wads of cash out of his car window at random houses. Something tells us this is going to come back to Walt in a very bad way.

In the final scene, everything we've been curious about since the end of last season comes to a head. Walt confronts Hank about the GPS tracker on his car. Hank closes the garage and after a moment of silence, punches Walt and pins him against the garage door.

"It was you all along! Heisenberg!"

Walt reveals that his cancer is back, so there might not be anyone to prosecute by the time Hank can actually gather evidence. Besides, pursuing this could tear their family apart.

"Tread lightly," he warns him in the final moment of the episode.

With that, we're all stuck holding our breath for yet another excruciating week.

What did you think about "Blood Money"? Sound off in the comments below.
