Kate Upton Elle Magazine

While Kate Upton is no stranger to appearing on magazine covers, the 21-year-old model's interview in the current issue of Elle magazine reveals a shyer side.

“After my first Sports Illustrated cover, I felt terrible about myself for a solid month," Upton admitted to the magazine. "Every single guy I met was either married or about to be married, and I felt like I was their bachelor present or something.”

Upton adds, “I’m not a toy, I’m a human. I’m not here to be used. I am a grown woman, and you need to figure your s--- out.”

Upton says it isn't just her who feels this way, but many models.

“People deal with models like they are children," she says. "They think they can pull one over on you. It’s actually funny.”

But Upton doesn't let it get to her.

“I’m always like, I’m about to pull something on you, and you’re so focused on thinking I’m dumb you’re not even going to know!"

As for Upton's much talked about love life and rumors she's dating "Dancing With the Stars" cast member Maksim Chmerkovskiy, the model says:

"I really have never had a serious relationship in the industry. I’m just having fun. Obviously I have a very busy schedule at this time in my life, and I don’t put relationships as a priority.”

In case you forgot, here's that infamous teeny weeny red bikini cover shot from 2012:

It went over so well that Upton landed a second consecutive cover in 2013:

'Blurred Lines' Just Became The Sixth-Most-Dominant Summer Song Of All Time

robin thicke blurred lines

There was some initial debate about whether the song of this summer was Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" or Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" (in spite of what some perceive as the latter's questionable content).

Now we know the contest is over: Billboard's Silvio Petroluongo reports "Lines" has now spent nine-consecutive weeks at No. 1.

That makes it the sixth-most-dominant summer song of all time.

The song also broken the all-time record for one-week "audience impressions," a product of total radio spins times size of a station's audience, at 219.8 million.

That means about 70% of America heard the song last week.

The previous impressions record was held by Mariah Carey's 2005 hit "We Belong Together," at 212.2 million. Records in this category began in 1990.

And the song has been streamed a total of 65.2 million times since its release in late March.

The song has gained momentum thanks both to its use in RadioShack's commercial for the Beats By Dre Pill Speakers, an NSFW video you can Google for yourself, and the aforementioned controversy the whole thing has generated.

(If, somehow,  you still haven't heard it, or think you might have but need to match the beat with the title, here it is in audio form:

Rihanna Sued For Allegedly Not Paying Grandma's Massive Funeral Bill

Rihanna Grandma Dolly

Rihanna was extremely close with her "Gran Gran Dolly," so when she passed away last June from cancer, the singer made sure to send her out in style.

After her body was sent to Barbados for burial, Rihanna threw her grandmother a celebration of life that included party tents, multi-media large screens and huge exotic floral arrangements.

"The company that threw grandma's final shindig claims the grand total was more than $150,000," reports TMZ, adding that "Rihanna paid only about a quarter of that and refused to pay more."

The lawsuit states that Rihanna claimed the bill was exorbitant and she refused to pay the balance.  The funeral home claims Rihanna's demands came at a hefty price, notes TMZ.

Rihanna hasn't commented on the claims, but is currently home in Barbados spending time with her grandfather and other relatives during the annual Crop Over festival.

"Look who was pon de road yesterday! My grandfather Bravo!!! The whole family was out to all! #Heauxm#Culture #Tradition #CropOva #Family #BIM#Barbados."

The Discovery Channel Is Really Upset About That Dead Shark On A New York Subway

When a dead shark was discovered in a New York City subway train Wednesday, some were quick to cry "marketing stunt."

"Looks like a good promo for Shark Week on the Discover Channel," MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz told The Huffington Post.

Tongue-in-cheek tweets have also circulated about "Shark Week" connections:

And SyFy UK, whose American counterpart made "Sharknado," was quick to jump on the buzz:

subway shark twitter

Although immersive marketing stunts are the new normal, a dead shark is probably too dark even for the makers of "Sharknado."

Even speculations about "Shark Week," which is currently airing on The Discovery Channel, were in jest, Discovery executive vice president of PR Laurie Goldberg commented on the strange occurrence.

"Shark Week is all about conversation, so it deeply saddens us that someone would think that this was funny or in any way connected to our celebration of sharks," she said.

Hollywood Producer Explains The 'Inhumane' 17-Hour Work Day Schedules On Film And TV Sets

$

Gavin Polone

Hollywood producer Gavin Polone is no stranger to a film set.

He's worked on movies such as “Panic Room” and “Zombieland” and served as executive producer of HBO's hit comedy, “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

But for as much time as he has spent on film and television sets, Polone has always wondered how grueling, 17-hour-day production schedules affect below-the-line workers—the camera crew, makeup artists, craft services people, etc. — who aren't getting the same massive paychecks as the actors, writers, directors, and producers.

While Polone admits “producers and actors are highly compensated for their work,”he says“it has always been difficult for me to understand how so many in this business put up with such a punishing routine,” as he explained to Vulturein a piece he wrote about “The Unglamorous, Punishing Hours of Working on a Hollywood Set.”

To better understand his colleagues, “I decided to interview some of the people around me about their feelings on the hours they work and how this regimen affects their lives.”

So, Polone started going up to his “below-the-line” coworkers on the set of the ABC Family TV show he is currently producing, “Jane By Design.”

Here is a summary of what they had to say about the “inhumane” work conditions:

FIlm set actors directorKirsten Robinson, Script Supervisor—“...which means she helps the director keep track of continuity and makes notes for the editor on how he should put together the pieces of the scenes.”Kirsten considered our show as a relief compared to a recent show she worked on where she “worked 16 to 18 hours every day and the worst day was twenty hours.” Robinson says the worst part was “At the lunch break, it’s like you have another regular person’s day ahead of you.”Polone says most work 17-hour days when shooting the current ABC Family show.

Steve D’Amato, First Assistant Director— Which means he is in charge of running the set.He recalls, “The worst day I ever worked on a show was 27 hours.” D'Amato adds, “What bothers me most is you don’t have time to do anything else. It’s hard. It seems like it’s unnecessary: You could just add one or two more days [to the schedule] and spread it out over more time. We’re the only industry that is fighting for a twelve-hour day: That is what I find amazing.”

Ali Yeganhe, Transportation Captain— Meaning hedispatches drivers, manages the fleet of vehicles, including those used on-camera, and drives as well. Polone says “his department has the worst hours.” Yeganhe notes, “There is a high divorce rate in this business. Truthfully, I haven’t slept a whole night in three years. My wife and I were together before we got in this business. She was in wardrobe, so she knew.”

Farah Bunch, Head of Makeup Department—“I’ve been doing this for eighteen years. The hours have always been the same. I started out in soap operas, which have great hours; then I went into multi-cams, which have even better hours; but once I entered the world of single-camera [meaning one-hour shows and feature films], I was in shock. I thought only in third-world countries people worked hours like this — a fourteen-hour day is the norm for the makeup department. You’re making more money, but it is blood money, 'cause you’re trading your life...”

“When I’m in season, I don’t see my friends or family. The weekends I spend recovering. I think it has contributed to me not being able to meet people because I’m not out there in the world mingling. I dated someone in the military and he was in shock that we were working all of these hours and he was out there saving lives and he’d be home by 4 p.m.: He was in Afghanistan and his hours were better than mine. You feel trapped with the hours, because you know that if you don’t do them, someone else will. And another thing, you’re given a ten-hour turnaround, which is just enough time to drive home, sleep seven hours like a normal human being, and go back to work. ”

HBO: We Know You're Pirating 'Game Of Thrones' And That's Fine

Daenerys Targaryen dragon game of thrones

Yesterday Time Warner Inc. — the owner of HBO —  released its quarterly earnings.

During the earnings call, Tuna Amobi of S&P U.S. Equity Research Services asked CEO Jeff Bewkes what he thought of "Game of Thrones" being the most pirated show on television.

We were tipped off about the exchange from the Game of Thrones blog White Harbour, which published an early transcription of the key quote earlier today.

Still, the whole response is fantastic. Essentially, Bewkes goes so far as to say that internet piracy is downright awesome for HBO.

HBO grows by gaining subscribers, and it gains subscribers mostly by word of mouth. In the old days, that word of mouth included neighbors inviting neighbors over to enjoy their HBO subscription, or even cases of people stealing cable just to score HBO.

Well, in their 30 year experience, all that "content theft" has done nothing but help HBO gain subscribers and create more high-investment content.

It's somewhat funny that sites like The Pirate Bay are not only driving more viewers to subscribe to HBO, but Bewkes goes so far as to say that they actually save a fortune on advertising costs because of this word-of-mouth side effect of bittorrent.

Here's the full exchange from the end of the conference call, made available by Time Warner here.

Tuna Amobi:Game of Thrones has obviously had a phenomenal performance, but one other issue that has come up with regards to that title is the online piracy. I think by all accounts one of the highest pirated shows and I'm not aware what you guys have done to kind of address that. It seems that you have viewed it as kind of a compliment in terms of looking the other way so much. Is that the right way of thinking? Kind of a paradigm shift with the piracy and its impact on shows going forward that what you've done.

[...]

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes: To end on Game of Thrones on HBO, I have to confess I think you're right. I have to admit, our first reaction to how much people want to watch it — now first of all it's got ratings of 14, 15 million — a lot of it is VOD [video on demand] on your TV system, an increasing amount of it is VOD on your [HBO]Go Service.

It's just really strengthening not just the image, but the engagement of our subs [subscribers] with HBO programming, it's also getting them familiar and more involved with using the video on demand capabilities of HBO and don't forget, the television part. The part where you go to your house and you turn on that big screen TV watching it over the video plan, also the HBO Go service where Game of Thrones is the leading introduction manual for how to use HBO Go which more and more people are doing.

Then go to people watching it who aren't subs, it's a tremendous word of mouth thing, the issue would be if they were doing it and because they could get it not subscribing, we don't see much of that.

Basically, we've been dealing with this issue for years with HBO, literally 20, 30 years, where people have always been running wires down on the back of apartment buildings and sharing with their neighbors.

Our experience is, it all leads to more penetration, more paying subs, more health for HBO, less reliance on having to do paid advertising — we don't do a whole lot of paid advertising on HBO, we let the programming and the views talk for us — it seems to be working.

If you go around the world, I think you're right, Game of Thrones is the most pirated show in the world. Well, you know, that's better than an Emmy. (laughter)

Obama Slams Kanye West And Kim Kardashian For Complicating The American Dream

Kim Kardashian Kanye West

President Obama isn't the biggest Kanye West fan.

In fact, he's even called the rapper a "jacka--" on two separate occasions.

So it shouldn't come as a surprise that Obama used Kanye and his girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, as examples of a warped American dream.

In a recent interview with David Blum for Kindle Singles, Blum asks the president about the American dream, saying, "Part of the American dream -- even if you're poor, or lower-middle class -- involves yearning for tangible things you can't afford. Were there things, when you were growing up, that you yearned for that you couldn't afford?"

Obama responded that the American dream used to be simpler: an education, a steady job, a home, and family. "There was not that window into the lifestyles of the rich and famous."

The president recalled a simpler time when "kids weren't monitoring every day what Kim Kardashian was wearing, or where Kanye West was going on vacation, and thinking that somehow that was the mark of success."

Obama continued to argue that with more access to celebrities and fame, a “change in culture” has occurred, distorting how many young Americans view success.

Way to go, Kimye.

Georgia Republicans More Likely To Approve Of Paula Deen Than Martin Luther King

paula deen

A new Public Policy Polling survey finds that Republicans in Georgia are more likely to support Paula Deen than Martin Luther King.

Georgia pollGeorgia-native Deen's favorability numbers have taken a hit following the recent scandal pertaining to her use of racial slurs.

A mere 54% of Georgians have a favorable opinion of Deen. But among Republicans, 73% approve.

Compare that with a mere 59% of Georgia Republicans who have a favorable opinion of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

PPP, a Democratic-aligned polling firm, found that 40% of Democrats viewed Deen favorably. 83% looked well on MLK.

The primary finding of the poll is that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would be competitive with every polled potential GOP rival in hypothetical presidential election matchups in 2016. Georgia has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1992.

Clinton polls ahead of Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), former Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.), and Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.), even with former Gov. Jeb Bush (Fla.),  just behind Gov. Chris Christie (N.J.), and 12 points ahead of former Gov. Sarah Palin (Alaska).

63% of Georgia independents believe that gay couples should be able to enter into either a marriage or some form of civil union.

Nearly 60% of Georgia Republicans believe that there should be no legal recognition for gay couples. 24% of Georgia Republicans said they opposed interracial marriage in this same poll.

So it was nice to see that Swift may have a sense of humor about herself in this security sign allegedly posted outside of her Rhode Island mansion. The sign references the lyrics to her hit song "I Knew You Were Trouble."

Leah Remini Files Missing Person's Report For Scientology Leader's Wife

Leah Remini

Leah Remini left Scientology loudly last month after 30 years with the church.

Not only did she tell media "no one is going to tell me how I need to think," she is now taking it into her own hands to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Scientology leader David Miscavige's wife, Shelly, who hasn't been seen since 2006.

Remini has filed a missing person report for Shelly, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The publication continues, "The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed only that an investigation regarding Shelly (Michelle) Miscavige is ongoing, but a source close to the 'King of Queens' actress confirms that Remini filed the report herself."

It's a bold move for Remini, who has reportedly been on the outs with Miscavige, and subsequently the church, after asking about Shelly's whereabouts during Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' 2006 nuptials.

According to Scientology blogger Tony Ortega, Remini believes Shelly may be locked in a secret Scientology compound near Lake Arrowhead that "houses about a dozen Scientologists who are said to be completely cut off from the outside world," writes THR.

Remini reportedly questions whether Shelly has freedom of movement in the facility or if she is being "punished for her own shortcomings."

But the church vehemently denies that their controversial leader's wife is missing.

In 2012, Shelly's attorneys told Us Weekly that "any reports that she is missing are false . . . Mrs. Miscavige has been working nonstop in the Church, as she always has."

But Remini's missing person report on Shelly won't be the first.

Here's another past missing persons poster put out by one anti-Scientology group:

aaron paul freak out breaking bad

“Breaking Bad” week is in full swing.

After nearly a year's hiatus, meth kingpin Walter White (Bryan Cranston) makes his big return to AMC Sunday night.

If you haven't noticed, we're hugefans

To get pumped for the series return, we're counting down the most unexpected moments from the series (so far).

Don't confuse this list with the overall best moments of the series (There are plenty of fantasticmonologues and montages that would make that list). Rather, these are the jaw-dropping moments you didn't see coming that made each hour-long episode worth viewing.

Let's begin!

[MASSIVE SPOILER WARNING TO THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN ALL FIVE SEASONS!]

16. Walt's first kill.

Season 1 | Episode 1 : “Pilot

Not only do we find out in the pilot episode that a nerdy, meek chemistry teacher by the name of Walter White wants to start cooking meth, but in the same hour he winds up murdering one guy — and seriously injuring another — with mustard gas.

He then devises a plan to get rid of the body with hydrofluoric acid! We didn't think the guy had it in him.

15. Walt goes berserk on Tuco's hang out.

Season 1 | Episode 6 : “Crazy Handful Of Nothin'

After Walt sees Jesse battered and broken in a hospital bed at the hand of unstable, mental case Tuco Salamanca, he decides to pay him a visit.

We know the chem teacher has something up his sleeve, but no one expected him to blow the place up with highly explosive fulminated mercury.

Lesson learned: Don't mess with Walter White.

14. Hank turns the tables on his twin assassins.

Season 3 | Episode 7 : “One Minute

After Hank receives a creepy warning call about two men out, we figure this is the end of the series run for the DEA agent.

Never count Hank out. Just when we think he's about to get axed (literally), he's able to get the best of his assassin.

Lena Dunham Is Right About Rents Driving Artists Out Of New York

$
0
0

I owe Lena Dunham an apology.

On Tuesday, the Girls creator and star spoke at a fundraiser for Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer (D), who is running for comptroller. And Capital New York reporter Azi Paybarah tweeted the following:

Like a lot of other New York writers, I had sort of a field day with this. After all, Girls is to gentrification as Weeds is to weed.

I should have waited for the tape. Dunham's comments weren't really about gentrification as such. They were about the fact that rising rents in New York are making the city increasingly unaffordable to lots of people, including low-paid creative workers.

What Dunham worries "will seriously f*** our sh*t up" is that high rents will lead to "our generation's Patti Smith moving to Tampa." She's right. I can't argue with that.

The key question is what to do about the fact that the rent is too damn high. New York has gotten a lot more expensive over the last three decades because, as the city has gotten cleaner and safer and financial sector salaries have gotten higher, demand for housing has soared.

The key to bringing down prices is to boost supply. That means letting people build. But too often, New York won't allow that.

Take, for example, the proliferation of landmarked historic districts in Manhattan. As economist Ed Glaeser noted in 2010, 16% of non-park land in Manhattan below 96th Street is now covered by such designations, in which new development must be approved by the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission.

That restriction limits the supply of new housing and drives up prices, making Manhattan less affordable. In fact, the most desirable neighborhoods in Manhattan are actually losing housing stock.

During the 1990s, mostly-landmarked Census tracts in Manhattan below 96th Street lost an average of 94 housing units, while non-landmarked tracts gained an average of 89. And the differences in supply led to matching differences in price: from 1980 to 2002, home prices in landmarked areas rose by an extra $6,000 per year compared to non-landmarked areas.

Of course, if you're the sort of person who would have moved to the West Village were it not for home price inflation due to landmark designation, you're probably not getting priced into Tampa. But you might end up moving to the Lower East Side, and someone who would live there if you hadn't bid up the rent might move to Williamsburg, and he might drive some struggling artist out to Bushwick ... who displaces someone who has to move to Tampa.

Policies that limit development in Manhattan are the reason that Girls is set in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and not in Manhattan — and they're the reason that people less economically fortunate than the characters on Girls can't even afford to live in Greenpoint.

The irony here is that people lament how the city is changing and losing economic diversity, but policies designed to prevent change actually make the city less affordable.

If you want lower rents and less gentrification — if the encroachment of bro-ish bars in Williamsburg alarms you—then you have to let developers build more luxury condos in the fancy Manhattan neighborhoods where rich people belong.

That is what will keep the next Patti Smith from moving to Tampa.

Leah Remini's Missing Person's Report For Scientology Leader's Wife Declared 'Unfounded'

leah remini

Hours after actress Leah Remini filed a missing person report for Scientology leader David Miscavige's wife, Shelly, Thursday, it was "ruled as unfounded."

"We have ruled the missing person report unfounded and closed the case," an LAPD representative confirmed to TheWrap.

According to TMZ, "cops had a face-to-face meeting" with Shelly, but we have the same question they do — "Did cops determine Shelly was or was not being held against her will?"

Remini filed the report after Shelly reportedly had not been seen in six years.

There are rampant rumors that the wife of Scientology's controversial leader, David, is being held in a secret Scientology compound near Lake Arrowhead that "houses about a dozen Scientologists who are said to be completely cut off from the outside world," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Remini reportedly questioned whether Shelly has freedom of movement in the facility or if she is being "punished for her own shortcomings" — hence the missing person's report.

Multiple reports following the actress’ departure from the Scientology claimed that Remini was concerned about Shelly Miscavige’s unknown whereabouts.

After breaking from the church in July, Remini  told People Magazine, "I'm not about to shut up" and "people should be allowed to question things."

Meanwhile, the church of Scientology has fired back with a scathing statement of their own regarding Remini's missing person's report, saying it "was nothing more than a publicity stunt for Ms. Remini, cooked up with unemployed, anti-religious zealots."

Alec Baldwin Could Be Getting His Own Show On MSNBC

alec baldwin

It's more certain than ever that Alec Baldwin, of "30 Rock" and paparazzi-dueling fame, will become a regular part of the MSNBC lineup.

On Thursday, Mediaite reported that a "senior source in the cable news industry" had confirmed Baldwin would get his own show, scheduled for Fridays at 10 p.m. and featuring his trademark aggressive liberalism.

The report got a lot of traction, but MSNBC has so far declined to give a hard answer on the addition of Baldwin to the Friday slate. In response to Mediaite, a spokesman said: "We're fans of Alec but we've got nothing to say regarding this unconfirmed report."

There's currently no news content in this slot; "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell" only airs Monday through Thursday and the station runs a prison documentary series called "Lockup" on Friday nights.

Baldwin is no stranger to the world of NBC: the network aired "30 Rock," which snagged him two Emmy Awards, for seven seasons. Perhaps more importantly, he's not one to apologize for his progressive, often combative views, which makes sense for a network that publicly acknowledges its left-leaning stance.

Church Of Scientology Issues Scathing Response To Leah Remini's Missing Person Report

Leah Remini

The Church of Scientology does not take it lightly when public figures speak out about the controversial religion.

After director/writer Paul Haggis wrote an open letter commending "brave" Leah Remini for breaking with the church last month, Scientology's media relations team sent out a statement calling him "a status-obsessed screenwriter" who is "desperately craving attention."

Now the church is taking aim at Remini after she filed a missing person report for Scientology leader David Miscavige's wife, Shelly, who reportedly hasn't been seen in six years.

LAPD found the report "unfounded" and the church's media team again went on attack, sending out the below scathing statement calling it "nothing more than a publicity stunt for Ms. Remini":

The Los Angeles Police Department has already stated that the case is closed and that the report filed by Leah Remini was unfounded.

This ill-advised, ludicrous self-promotion and the media inquiries it generated caused an inexcusable distraction for the LAPD in an era when the time and resources of its officers are stretched thin each day. Creating this unnecessary burden for law enforcement was even more irresponsible given the entire episode was nothing more than a publicity stunt for Ms. Remini, cooked up with unemployed, anti-religious zealots, such as Tony Ortega, who blog on the fringe of the Internet. Sadly, rather than move on with her life and career, Ms. Remini has aligned herself with a handful of untrustworthy, lunatic tabloid sources who obsessively harass the Church to advance their selfish agendas.

There's finally some news about Simon Cowell about something other than his personal life.

The brutally honest Brit topped Forbes' list of Highest-Paid TV Personalities, earning an estimated $95 million between June 2012 and June 2013.

Cowell's reign as the most respected judge on "American Idol" ended in 2010. Although he continues to appear on-screen in "The X Factor," Forbes reports that a majority of his income comes from ownership stakes in "The X Factor," which airs in 41 countries, and "Got Talent," the biggest-selling TV franchise in the world.

Cowell shares the top spot with another TV personality known for speaking his mind. Howard Stern earned $95 million in the last year, thanks to his show on Sirius Satellite Radio and earnings as a host on Cowell's "America's Got Talent."

Former titan of daytime television, Oprah Winfrey, fell from the number one spot to fourth place this year. Her 25-year syndicated talk show went off the air in 2011, but the OWN network this year started turning a profit.

New to the list: Judy Sheindlin replaced Jennifer Lopez. Her long-running court drama regularly tops the list of most watched syndicated daytime television.

Here's Forbes' top 10 list of Highest-Paid TV Personalities:

1. Simon Cowell — $95 million

2. Howard Stern — $95 million

3. Glen Beck — $90 million

4. Oprah Winfrey — $77 million

5. Dr. Phil McGraw — $72 million
