New Anti-Piracy Policy From Comcast Will Use Pop-Ups To Fight Illegal Downloads

comcast

Comcast is already developing an alternative to the 'Six Strikes' anti-piracy policy it recently implemented.

The current 'Six Strikes' program gives users downloading pirated material six warnings before throttling their bandwidth, resulting in slower download speeds.

But Comcast is now developing a new program, Variety's Andrew Wallenstein reports, and it doesn't involve internet throttling at all.

Instead, Comcast would briefly interrupt illegal downloads with a pop-up ad. The pop-up would then contain a link to the official content, paving the way for legal purchases. The new policy could eventually replace the 'Six Strikes' system for Comcast, or the two could exist in tandem.

The pop-up policy is still in its infancy, with Variety reporting that Comcast has just begun discussing details with networks and movie studios.

Lady Gaga Slams 'Criminal' Russian Government On Twitter For Anti-Gay Stance

The Mother Monster went after Mother Russia.

Lady Gaga launched a Twitter rant on Monday, berating the Russian government for its "criminal" stance on LGBT rights.

The five-time Grammy winner's visa is currently being investigated by the Russian government, according to ABC News. Authorities say she violated her tourist visa by performing concerts there last year.

Expert sources, including the executive director of the Center for the National Interest, speculated to ABC that the investigation is a thinly veiled attempt to punish the singer for her LGBT advocacy.

She tweeted:

Lady Gaga vaguely addressed the investigation with this tweet:

The three tweets garnered a combined 47,000 retweets.

Lady Gaga took a leave of absence from Twitter between March and June, and returned for the promotion of her album "ARTPOP," which drops November 11.

Watch Seth Rogen, Adam Scott And Other Actors Audition For 'The Office' In 2003

One of the best parts of NBC's "The Office" arriving on Blu-ray on Sept. 3 is the fact that it will contain audition tapes as a bonus feature.

The never-before-seen footage contains now big-time actors such as Seth Rogen auditioning for the hit NBC comedy in 2003 during a three month casting process.

While we think the cast worked out for the best, here's who else was up for the gig:

  • "Harold & Kumar" star John Cho and "Parks & Recreation" actor Adam Scott for prank-loving "Jim Halpert," went to John Krasinski.
  • "Parks & Recreation" actress Kathryn Hahn for female lead "Pam Beesly," went to Jenna Fischer.
  • Judd Apatow prodigy Seth Rogen for quirky "Dwight Schrute," went to Rainn Wilson.
  • "Modern Family" star Eric Stonestreet for lazy "Kevin Malone,"  went to Brian Baumgartner.
  • "Breaking Bad" actor Bob Odenkirk for boss "Michael Scott," went to Steve Carrell.

Watch the now-famous actors' audition tapes that didn't make the cut:

Raise your hand if you did get cast in the Emmy-winning sitcom that ended in March after running for nine seasons:

Around the show's finale, actor Rainn Wilson posted a photo of the original audition sign-in sheet.

This is the original sign-in sheet for the first day of casting for The Office given to me by Allison Jones, our incredible casting agent. I was the very first person to audition for the series, 11/06/03. Notice all the amazing talent on the sheet, including the amazing #13! This is perhaps the greatest Office keepsake I have. So grateful for the best job I will ever have.

ABC Casts First Latino 'Bachelor'

juan pablo galavis the bachelor

ABC named its first Latino Bachelor: Venezuelan stud Juan Pablo Galavis.

Host Chris Harrison made the official announcement during the "After the Final Rose" special, following the season finale of "The Bachelorette" on Monday night.

Galavis, 32, was a season 17 contestant, who wooed female audiences during his brief run on the show. The Spanish-speaking Miami resident retired from professional football — ahem, soccer — in 2009 to spend more time with his daughter, Camila.

"It's very hard to date when you have a daughter, that's why I took the chance to come here," Galavis told the cameras after he was booted from the show. "Hopefully I'll find a stepmom for Camila pretty soon."

While "The Bachelor" has had a handful of minorities as suitors before, never before has a non-Caucasian been cast in the titular role.

In 2012, two men who auditioned and failed to make the cut brought a class-action lawsuit against the show, arguing racial discrimination. A U.S. District Court ruled that ABC is protected by the First Amendment right to control the show's creative content — like casting white people to appeal to a primarily white audience.

It'll be interesting to see if ABC casts more Latina contestants than usual, and how over-the-top the network will be at reminding audiences of its Latin lover's heritage.

Host Chris Harrison did greet Galavis on the show last night, "Hello, señor."

Ashton Kutcher Copied Everything Steve Jobs Ate, Read, And Watched To Prep For 'jOBS' Role

Steve Jobs movie

Ashton Kutcher went through a rigorous three months of learning everything he could about Steve Jobs before playing the Apple co-founder in the upcoming biopic "jOBS."

After watching documentaries and interviews from the Silicon Valley Historical Associationcollecting YouTube content Inspired By Jobs and listening to Soundcloud files, Kutcher noticed a few patterns about Jobs' personality.

The 35-year-old actor recently opened up on Quora about what he learned from his research:

Read Quote of Ashton Kutcher's answer to Ashton Kutcher: How did Ashton Kutcher prepare for his role as Steve Jobs in the new movie Jobs? on Quora

But, cautions Kutcher,  "I quickly found that, while learning 'how a person is' ultimately is the key, you have to learn 'why a person is.'"

"So I started to consume what he consumed," Kutcher explains. Below is a list of what the actor researched for the role:

The books Jobs read:

Autobiography of a Yogi : Paramahansa Yogananda

Mucusless Diet Healing System: Arnold Ehret

Be Here Now: Ram Dass.

Researching the artists Jobs admired:

  • Bauhaus
  • Folon
  • Ansel Adams

Eating the food Jobs ate:

  • Grapes
  • Carrot Juice
  • Popcorn

Studying the Entrepreneurs Jobs admired:

  • Edison
  • Edwin Land

Meeting the people that he knew and worked with:

  • Alan Kay
  • Avi Tevanian
  • Jeffery Katzenberg
  • Mike Hawley

But before throwing himself into the role, Kutcher said he struggled with taking on a character he admired who wasn't necessarily portrayed positively in the film.

"I had great reservations," Kutcher explains on Quora. "But I chose to take on the role for a couple reasons."

  1. I imagined actors playing the role and not connecting to the love that went into some of the seemingly irrational decisions that Steve sometimes made.
  2. The idea of playing the role terrified me. I've found that the greatest rewards I've received in my life have come from jumping at the opportunities to take on things that scare me.
  3. It was a perfect convergence in my craft and my interests. I've spent the last 5 years working with early stage technology companies as an investor and advisor. Whenever you take on a role, it's like a crash course in the subject matter of the film. So while researching the role I was able to spend countless hours studying tech design, product, and history. It also afforded me the opportunity to meet with several of Steve's peers who happen to be icons of the tech world.
  4. I wanted to remind entrepreneurs that Steve Jobs wasn't always "Steve Jobs", that he struggled, that he failed, and that he rigorously persevered to build something great to improve other people's lives.

Now watch the "jOBS" trailer and judge how Kutcher did below. The movie opens August 16.

Johnny Depp And Armie Hammer: Blame The Box-Office Failure Of 'The Lone Ranger' On Movie Critics

$

0

armie hammer lone ranger

There are a lot of potential reasons why "The Lone Ranger" didn't do well at theaters.

Director Gore Verbinski's reboot wasn't really sure of its main audience— it wasn't for kids, but still felt too campy for adults — the film was too long, and the plot was clunky.

However, the stars Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer along with producer Jerry Bruckheimer believe the $29 million opening weekend really boils down to film critics' (mostly) sour reviews— and having it in for the movie.

Yahoo! Movies UK & Ireland compiled nearly three and a half minutes of footage of the stars and crew criticizing the American movie reviewers.

Here's what they had to say during their recent UK press tour for the film:

Johnny Depp: "I think the reviews were probably written when they heard that Gore and Jerry and I were going to do "The Lone Ranger" ... I think their expectations [were] that it must be a blockbuster. I didn't have any expectations of that. I never do. Why would I?"

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer: "I think that they [movie critics] were reviewing the budget, not reviewing the movie."

Armie Hammer was most vocal.

"This is the deal with American critics — They've been gunning for our movie since it was shut down the first time. That's probably when most of the critics wrote their initial reviews."

"If you go back and read a lot of the negative reviews, must of them don't actually have anything to do with the content of the movie, but more, what's behind it. It's gotten to an unfortunate place with American critics where if you're not as smart as Plato, you're stupid. And that seems like a very sad way to have to live your life."

Watch the video:

To be fair, the word for weeks prior to release was that "The Lone Ranger" was going to bomb. ComicBookMovie.com was astute to point out that out of all the summer films, it was the blockbuster many forgot was coming to theaters. forgetting about.

Weekend estimates for the film ahead of release said the film may earn between $60-$70 million upon opening while BoxOffice.com correctly predicted the film earning under $30 million.

"Do you remember playing the villain in the 'Power Rangers'? Remember that?" Leno teased, just before rolling a clip.

"What did I do to you?" Cranston said, laughing.

Here's his "Power Rangers" cameo:

Later in the segment, Leno revealed a nipple-revealing photo from an old GQ Magazine shoot.

13 Reasons Why Everyone Is Obsessed With 'Breaking Bad'

$

gus jesse breaking bad

The final eight episodes of "Breaking Bad" begin airing this Sunday on AMC.

After nearly a year-long hiatus, meth kingpin Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and partner in crime Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) return for what should be a dramatic series end.

Since we last saw the two on screen, the show has spiked in popularity.

Not only has the series been available for binge viewers on Netflix, but everyone seems obsessed with it.

Celebrities from Seth Meyers to billionaire Warren Buffett have declared themselves huge fans of the hit AMC series.

The media went crazy when Cranston walked around this year's San Diego Comic-Con dressed as his "Breaking Bad" character

"The Simpsons" even did a tribute to the show.

If you're not on board with the frenzy, you may wonder why America is so enthralled with two meth cooks.

Fans who have tried explaining the series to a non-viewer have probably had a difficult time relaying the show's bizarre premise in a single sentence.

After re-watching all five seasons, we've compiled a list of what makes creator Vince Gilligan's show one of the best on television.

The concept of the show sounds ridiculous, but it's brilliant.

Imagine your high-school chemistry teacher.

Now, imagine that same person — who probably leads a somewhat normal life — cooking meth for money after being diagnosed with inoperable cancer.

After his 50th birthday, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) "breaks bad," joining up with former student and drug dealer Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) to cook and distribute methamphetamine to provide for his family well after he's gone (and later to support his medical expenses).

You watch the show's main character slowly change from the protagonist to the antagonist.

We can't think of another television series that introduces a sympathetic main character who slowly becomes diabolical, greedy, self-centered, and cruel.

That's what happens with Walt as we watch the drug business turn a timid, stumbling chemistry teacher into an overly confident, malevolent kingpin — aka Heisenberg — who wouldn't hesitate to put a bullet through someone's head. Even as Walt becomes increasingly violent, however, because of the viewer's attachment with the chem teacher from the start, it's easier to sympathize with him as opposed to other characters, like Walt's wife Skyler and his DEA brother-in-law Hank Schrader who continuously try to bring him down.

If Walt's character was introduced as a villain from the start, it may have been more difficult for viewers to turn a blind eye, or back up many of his actions.

The tumultuous relationship between Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul's characters.

Walt and Jesse have a love-hate relationship as the older teacher easily and often gets agitated and frustrated with the younger, inexperienced chemistry flunk.

As the series progresses, the viewers see the two develop a sort of father-son bond, with Walt becoming much closer to Jesse than his actual son, Walt Jr. (He once accidentally refers to his own son accidentally as Jesse.) Jesse becomes very protective of his former teacher when others threaten his life.

The chemistry translates off screen as well.

Anytime these two head out in public together, the pair always deliver a series of must-see photos.

Also, if you've watched the gag reels for "Breaking Bad," it's easy to see just how well the two get along. Paul has said that Cranston is a giant prankster on set.

johnny depp tonto the lone ranger

Disney predicts a $160-$190 million write down next quarter on box-office flop "The Lone Ranger."

The company made the announcement during its Q3 earnings call.

"The Lone Ranger" cost the studio an estimated $215+ million with additional money for marketing and faced multiple delays from the studio including a cancellation scare back in 2011.

The film, starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, debuted to a weak $29 million three-day opening weekend— less than that of last year's "John Carter" ($30.2 million).

Analysts originally estimated the film to bring in near $60-$70 million upon its box-office debut.

Currently, the film has earned $175.6 million worldwide. The film has failed to break $100 million domestically.

After its last blockbuster bomb, "John Carter," Disney originally predicted near a $200 million write off on the film

In Q2 2012, Disney's operating income saw a loss of $84 million in part to "John Carter."

The Jimmy Kimmel / Matt Damon feud is back on.

During a segment of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" the late night host's sidekick Guillermo crashed a fake junket for Damon's upcoming Sony flick "Elysium."

Guillermo storms in saying he's promoting a "new film" called "Estupido," a true story about "a man from Boston who's stupid" before showcasing another fake film featuring the star.

The entire fake feud started as a joke years ago when Kimmel sent fake apologies to the actor for not having enough time to interview him.

Hopefully, Damon will exact revenge by taking over the show again.

Daft Punk Cancelling On Stephen Colbert Resulted In The Best Celebrity Dance Party To 'Get Lucky'

Tuesday night Daft Punk was supposed to perform its song of the summer "Get Lucky" on "The Colbert Report."

However, they abruptly cancelled Monday afternoon due to contractual obligations with MTV to make a "surprise" musical performance later this month on the network's Video Music Awards.

With no musical act, Stephen Colbert made light of the situation with his own celebrity-studded performance of the song.

Celebs from Hugh Laurie, Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and even Bryan Cranston joined in what we think everyone can agree will get more views for "The Colbert Report" than any Daft Punk performance.

Afterward, Robin Thicke showed up to perform what others are calling the actual song of the summer, "Blurred Lines."

The sudden appearance of such a high-profile performer has led some to wonder whether the entire bit was a publicity stunt for MTV's VMAs considering both Comedy Central and MTV are both owned by Viacom.

Earlier in the show Colbert expertly "shredded" MTV for "stealing" away Daft Punk.

This No-Makeup Photo Shows How Much Jennifer Aniston Has Been Photoshopped In Ads

Even the most naturally beautiful actresses undergo epic amounts of Photoshopping for ad campaigns.

When hairstylist Chris McMillan posted a photo of actress (and close friend) Jennifer Aniston sans makeup on Instagram, Jezebel quickly noticed how much the actress has been digitally altered, even in "natural" photoshoots.

The Instagram:

The Aveeno Ad:

Which is nothing compared to how she looked in a 2011 Allure cover shoot — in an issue that claims to reveal "the truth about natural skin care":

allure jennifer aniston

Note that the real Aniston, 44, has cute wrinkles, but the Aniston you see in ads and on magazine covers is wrinkle-free.

This isn't the worst Photoshop offense out there — Christy Turlington is essentially unrecognizable in her new Calvin Klein ads— but it does provide an interesting contrast.

Aniston looks incredible make up-free and while Aveeno's commercials claim to have "naturally beautiful results," it's still different from the actual, natural thing.

Willis was part of the first two hugely successful installment of the "Expendables" franchise, which grossed over half a billion dollars combined worldwide.
