5 Bands You Should Be Listening To This Weekend

david lynch

With so many great tracks and albums coming out every week, it’s sometimes difficult to keep up with all the news.

Lucky for you, we at FILTER love looking through everything to find some great new music amongst everything.

This week some old and new favorites brought us some new music we were excited to listen to, so we’re here to share them with you!

David Lynch

The all around gifted artist has graced us with his second album as a solo artist, "The Big Dream." Ever since the release of that teaser trailer last month, we awaited to hear this album for ourselves. The day has finally come and like anything that David Lynch touches, it is worth experiencing for yourself. As expected, Lynch knows how to use music to evoke a certain mood and put the listener into a specific mindset. While not the masterpiece of his career, it is still a Lynch piece of work that should be listened to while it’s still fresh in mind.

Jacco Gardner

 jacco gardner

This Dutch multi-instrumentalist knows how to experiment with sound to create a line that blends between psychedelic and baroque. His gentle vocals soothe the ears and mind into a dream-like state and then lift the spirits with a whirlwind of instruments. He has a very 60’s pop sort of vibe that seems to be perfect for those lazy summer days and relaxing summer nights.

Fort Jams

Joel Bond is the man behind the name and he does well behind it. The multi-instrumentalist can create some eerily, haunting tracks that are somehow also on the catchy side. His song “Jacket Inside” has the air of a soothing lullaby that just sets the tone for a perfect dream night. It twinkles in just the right notes and his voice just melts into the song to create a harmony that’s soothing and easy to listen to over and over again.

Terraplane Suns

 terraplane sun

Since the release of their album "Coyote" back in 2011, we have been big fans of this So-Cal based group. We recently premiered their EP, "Ya Never Know," and it reminded me of all the reasons why we love them. With their eclectic sound that combines the sounds of the piano, mandolin, harmonica and more, it is difficult not to develop an interest in their unique music. Just listen to the track “Ya Never Know” to see what we mean!

Mayer Hawthorne

mayer hawthorne

After some anticipation, this suave R&B/Hip-Hop artists has finally dropped his latest album, "Where Does This Door Go," this week. It seems that over the course of two albums, he has found a sound that’s getting him noticed. With the help of friends like Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell Williams, this smooth soul singer is really making an inevitable buzz around the music circuit. If this new record is any indication of MH’s possibilities, it seems that this Michigan native will be going far with his talents.

The First Epic Trailer For 'The Walking Dead' Season 4

'Veronica Mars' Creator Envisions 'A Bond Franchise'

veronica mars comic-con kristen bell"Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell on Friday had their first chance to address investors — the fans — with a first-look preview trailer and news of what their favorite teen supersleuth has been up to since the show ended in 2007.

You know the lore: Thomas has been wanting to stage the show's bigscreen return for years. He posted the project on crowdfunding site Kickstarter — and promptly broke all kinds of records as it soared well past its funding goal of $3 million.

And just because the budget is small doesn't mean they didn't pull out all the stops. Friday in Hall H was one legit Netpune reunion: Thomas, Bell, Enrico Colantoni, Ryan Hansen, Jason Dohring, Tina Majorino, Chris Lowell, Percy Daggs III and Francis Capra all made appearances.

Kicking off with a fan appreciation video and then a preview trailer, it's revealed Veronica has finished a degree in psychology and went on to law school. When we meet her in the movie, she's a New York City lawyer.

"It has A 'Godfather 3' theme to it," Thomas said. "Veronica has not worked as a private detective since the last time you see her on season 3. The movie pulls her back."

Everyone seems to have lost touch since the events of the show.

veronica mars comic-con kristen bell"Our characters are seeing each other for the first time as we're seeing each other for the first time," Tina Majorino said.

"It wasn't tough to bring her back out of retirement," Bell said about returning to the role after all these years. "There's something about Rob's writing that I just get and can memorize really easily. Veronica's voice is in my head."

Thomas had two goals with the film. First, to please the fans, which he thinks he has done.
"I'm giving the fans what they want to see," he said. "I know the pleasure zones for 'Veronica Mars' fans and I'm giving them that."

The second goal? To expand the audience and make more movies. He said that while there are "Easter eggs" all over the movie for the series' fans, it doesn't really revisit the happenings of the series. It only asks new fans to accept that Veronica had this strange life as a teen detective.

"I want this to be a 'Bond' franchise," he proclaimed.

The movie, which wraps on Monday, is slated for an early 2014 debut. It will be quickly followed by the first of two Veronica Mars books penned by Thomas, which take place after the film's action.

Here's How Much 'Today' Show Ratings Have Dropped Since Savannah Guthrie Replaced Ann Curry

A little more than a year ago, "Today" said goodbye to co-host Ann Curry.

NBC's morning show also appears to have said goodbye to a significant chunk of its viewership in the time since it bid adieu to Curry.

July 9 marked the first anniversary of Savannah Guthrie replacing Ann Curry on "Today," and the numbers suggest that the change hasn't been kind to the show, which has been losing ground to ABC counterpart "Good Morning America" lately.

In the period between July 9, 2012 and July 8, 2013, "Today" averaged 4.647 million total viewers from 7 to 9 a.m., — a drop of about 606,000 from the 5.253 million that the show averaged in the first year of Ann Curry's tenure as a co-host, following her June 9, 2011 premiere.

In the key 25-54 news demo, "Today" also dropped, from  an average 2.321 million viewers during Curry's first year to 1.908 million in Guthrie's first year.

ann curry today show goodbyeIn fairness, the Curry era suffered a similar slump in its first year compared to that of her predecessor. From Sept. 13, 2006 to Sept. 12, 2007 — the first year of Meredith Vieira's co-host run — "Today" averaged 5.461 million total viewers, with 2.607 in the demo.

Vieira, meanwhile, is preparing to launch her own daytime offering. "The Meredith Vieira Show," from NBCUniversal Domestic Television, will premiere as a syndicated show in fall 2014.

Celebrities Who Broke Up But Had To Keep Working Together

luke wilson drew barrymore

Paychecks heal all wounds.

No one want really wants to see their ex after a breakup, let alone have to work alongside them every day. So if you start hooking up with a bandmate or co-star, you better hope it's for the long haul, because if your mutual gig lasts longer than your love, things are inevitably gonna get awkward.

Just ask these folks.

Ian Somerhalder & Nina Dobrev

After three years together, co-stars turned boyfriend/girlfriend Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder called it quits in 2013, romantically at least. Many times when two celebrities part ways, it's because their busy schedules prevent the development of a fully formed relationship — not so for Dobrev and Somerhalder, who will continue to work together on CW's "The Vampire Diaries" as it head into its fifth season.

Adam Brody & Rachel Bilson

Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody couldn't fight their natural chemistry once filming started on "The O.C." in the early '00s. As the two were falling in love on-screen as Seth Cohen and Summer Roberts, so were they in real life. Alas, art did not imitate life. While Rachel and Adam broke up a year before the series was over, Summer and Seth ended the run with a wedding.

Kaley Cuoco & Johnny Galecki

If you dropped out of watching "Big Bang Theory" because you couldn't believe Johnny Galecki's character could land someone like Kaley Cuoco, well here's some sobering news: The two stars dated in real-life for two years. Though Cuoco and Galecki split in 2010, it wasn't enough to keep them form quitting the show. Wonder if that will change now that Cuoco is dating Superman.

These Numbers Show That Nate Silver Made A Genius Decision Ditching The New York Times For ESPN

0
0

nate silver

Friday it came out that statistical wunderkind Nate Silver would be leaving The New York Times at the end of his contract to move his highly acclaimed FiveThirtyEight blog to ESPN, with some politics work at sister network ABC.

Frankly, the move is brilliant for several reasons.

Silver first got public attention after he sold his sabermetric PECOTA model to Baseball Prospectus. His interest originally lay in the statistical modeling of sports. His leap into politics came when he realized that writing about actual statistical facts about politics in lieu of pundits' gut reactions was something the American electorate secretly craved.

Still, after two consecutive presidential elections called with impeccable accuracy, it's understandable that Silver may want to spend the next years focusing on sports instead of the daily play-by-play of Congress' "will-they-or-won't-they" relationship with passing legislation.

Anyway, there are a ton of excellent reasons for Silver to jump ship from the Times to ESPN. Here are a few of them:

First, this is a massive audience increase.

While Silver went mainstream at the Times, at ESPN he'll have a larger audience than the Grey Lady could ever hope to offer.

Just take a second and look at the search volume difference between "New York Times" and "ESPN."

Not even close. More importantly, that gap is getting even wider.

ESPN crushed the Times on the Alexa Rankings too. ESPN.go.com is the 26th most visited site in the United States, while The New York Times is way back at 49th.

During the election, Silver was pulling in one in five of the site's inbound views. He's outgrown The New York Times, and if he wants to boost his own audience, ESPN is the promotion he needs.

Even more, ESPN the company seems like a better place to be than The New York Times Company.

According to Glass Door, ESPN employees are "satisfied" with ESPN while NYT employees think the company is a merely "OK" place to work.

And, while the pile of money and job security Nate Silver would receive for writing would likely be remarkable regardless of whether he's writing in Bristol or New York, Bristol seems to be on more even footing.

The New York Times has been trying to cut overhead and buy out employees for years. Photos of the Times newsroom gathering to say goodbye to esteemed editors the paper can no longer afford have become common on Twitter at this point.

People mostly seem to leave ESPN when they're in the middle of a sordid sex scandal.

Plus, while Silver will continue publishing things on the internet, he'll also get a huge bump in his supplemental platform by transitioning from one of the places Americans no longer get their news from — newspapers — to where most Americans get their news from, Network (ABC) and Cable (ESPN).

Take a look at this chart from MPO Research to see why dumping print in favor of Network and Cable is a huge upgrade:

Where do Americans Get Their News

Plus, it's clear that Silver likes to write about sports, and he wasn't getting the range to write about them at the Times as much as he was when he was an independent.

Between February 24, 2008 and August 29, 2010 — the 30 months of its run — Silver wrote 43 posts tagged "sports" at his previous independent site, FiveThirtyEight.com. From August 25 to now — the 35 months he's spent at the Times — Silver has only been able to write 27 posts tagged "sports," and many of these were videos discussing his own articles.

What this means is that when he was flying solo, Silver penned an average of 1.43 sports posts per month. At the Times, he only wrote 0.77 sports posts per month.

At ESPN, it's reasonable to assume he's going to be given a wider berth to write about sports in lieu of politics, which may be exactly what Silver is looking for in the boring years between presidential elections.

Holy sequels, Batman.

Warner Bros. surprised everyone at Comic-Con today announcing a Batman / Superman movie in 2015.

"Man of Steel" actor Harry Lennix opened the panel quoting a line from Frank Miller's 1989 comic "The Dark Knight Returns" in which Bats says the iconic line:

"I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come. In all your private moments. I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember, the one man who beat you."

"Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder then took the stage revealing the following logo:

batman superman logoAccording to a press release from Warner Bros., the dynamic team of David S. Goyer, Christopher Nolan, and Snyder will join forces again to bring Supes and the new Batman to the big screen.

Here's the statement released from Warner Bros.

On the heels of the worldwide success of "Man of Steel," director Zack Snyder is bringing together the two greatest Super Heroes of all time—Batman and Superman—for the first time on the big screen. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The current hit, "Man of Steel," has taken in more than $630 million at the worldwide box office to date, and climbing. Along with its star, Henry Cavill, the upcoming film brings back Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. The new Batman has yet to be cast.

Snyder is co-writing the story with David S. Goyer, who will then pen the screenplay. Production is expected to begin in 2014, with an anticipated release date in Summer 2015.

Silverman stated, "Zack Snyder is an incredibly talented filmmaker, but beyond that, he's a fan first and he utterly gets this genre. We could not think of anyone better suited to the task of bringing these iconic Super Heroes to the screen in his own way." Kroll added, "We are thrilled to be back in business with Zack and his team on this next movie. The success of ‘Man of Steel' is a wonderful testament to the love and support that both fans and new audiences, worldwide, have for these characters. We are very excited to see what Zack has in store for all of us."

Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment, noted, "Superman and Batman together on the big screen is a dream come true for DC fans everywhere. All of us at DC Entertainment could not be more excited for Zack's continuing vision for the DC Universe."

Zack Snyder, who made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con today, breaking the news to audiences there, later said, "I'm so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can't wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter. Let's face it, it's beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest Super Heroes in the world."

The new film brings back Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder as producers. This time, Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are serving as executive producers, along with Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan.

Thomas offered, "Whilst our ‘Dark Knight' trilogy is complete, we have every confidence that Zack's fresh interpretation will take the character in a new and exciting direction. His vision for Superman opened the door to a whole new universe and we can't wait to see what Zack does with these characters."

The film is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, and Batman characters created by Bob Kane, published by DC Entertainment.

JK Rowling Was Actually Outed By A Wife's Tweet

0
0

The Cuckoos Calling, JK Rowling

JK Rowling wanted to keep her identity secret when she published her crime novel The Cuckoo's Calling under a pseudonym, but Twitter put paid to that.

It began with a barely literate tweet. At 11.34pm, on Wednesday July 10, Fleet Street columnist India Knight told her 95,000 followers that she was enjoying a new novel. “The book I’m reading (detective nov called The Cuckoo’s Call, Robert Galbraith, so good, feat/ghastly cokey v think Mayfair women) has ++”.

A few minutes later, Harriet Green, family editor of The Guardian, asked if it was a good choice for holiday reading. Knight said yes. Then, at 12.07am, a follower called @JudeCallegari dropped a bombshell about the book.

Callegari’s tweets have since been deleted and her account suspended, but it has been possible to piece together for the first time the ensuing conversation between Callegari and Knight, using screengrabs that were taken at the time:

JC: “Written by JK Rowling”

IK: “Eh?”

JC: “It’s her pseudonym – promise its true”

IK: “Seriously? How do you know?”

JC: “Seriously. Friend works for publisher”

So began a series of events that would lead to the unmasking of Robert Galbraith as JK Rowling, The Cuckoo’s Calling’s rise from 4,709th position in the Amazon sales chart to number one, and a search for the source of the biggest leak in recent publishing history – a whodunit mystery that would tax even Cormoran Strike, the ex-military police gumshoe at the heart of Rowling’s new book.

When the mystery was finally solved on Thursday, a senior lawyer’s reputation was in question and a Surrey housewife was holed up in her five-bedroom home in Claygate, refusing to answer journalists’ questions over the intercom. As for Rowling, she made it known that she was “very angry” and “disappointed”.

In the hours immediately after Rowling’s cover was blown last weekend, there was a widespread belief that the affair had been a clever publicity campaign orchestrated by her publishers, Little, Brown. Since its publication in April, The Cuckoo’s Calling had sold 449 copies in the UK, according to Nielsen Bookscan, and a further 1,000 copies overseas. And Rowling herself had seemed surprisingly relaxed at being outed. “I had hoped to keep this secret a little longer because being Robert Galbraith has been such a liberating experience,” the 47-year-old author said.

But then, as is so often the case, the unmasking of Rowling began to look more like cock-up than conspiracy. By Monday night, bookshops and wholesalers were sold out, and a massive reprint wasn’t going to reach the shelves for five days, even though the publisher’s printers were “working round the clock”. Good for ebook sales, a missed opportunity for bookshops.

And, in a sobering assessment of the publishing industry, it emerged that sales of 1,500 copies in hardback for a debut crime writer were deemed perfectly respectable – certainly not disastrous enough for Little Brown or Rowling herself to turn to the nuclear option of revealing Galbraith’s real identity.

As bookshops and online retailers began to prepare for the imminent and unexpected windfall, attention inevitably turned to the book’s publication back in April. Kate Mills, publishing director of Orion, was brave enough to admit that she had turned it down – a rejection that has been compared, in terms of lost revenue, with the dozen or so publishers who passed on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 1997. “When the book came in, I thought it was perfectly good,” Mills said. “It was certainly well written – but it didn’t stand out.”

The fact that the manuscript had been sent out to other publishers for consideration suggests that Rowling genuinely wished to remain anonymous for as long as possible, regardless of book sales. Suspicions would have been raised if a debut crime writer’s novel had only been submitted to one editor. It was also sent to established crime writers for “jacket blurbs”, including Val McDermid, Mark Billingham, Peter James. McDermid was “gobsmacked” when she heard the news; she had invited Galbraith to sit on her New Blood panel at this weekend’s Theakston’s crime writing festival in Harrogate.

To be fair, it took a group of experts in forensic linguistics to help establish that The Cuckoo’s Calling had been written by Rowling. Patrick Juola, a professor of computer science at Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University, was one of those called in to compare the text with The Casual Vacancy, Rowling’s first adult novel, published last year, and with works by Ruth Rendell, PD James and McDermid. Using various software programs, Juola looked for authorial fingerprints by highlighting the most frequently used words. “Prepositions and articles and similar little function words are actually very individual,” Juola told Time magazine. “It’s actually very, very hard to change them because they’re so subconscious.”

Juola’s computer analysis, though not conclusive, complemented other findings, including Galbraith’s fondness for Latin quotes and a distinctly feminine way of describing women’s clothing. There was also the fact – so obvious with hindsight – that Galbraith and Rowling shared the same publisher, David Shelley at Little, Brown, and the same agent, Neil Blair.

In the end, Rowling admitted that she was Galbraith, but that still didn’t answer the question of who had leaked the story in the first place. Four days after Rowling’s unmasking, journalists pored over the social media profile of the resolutely unmysterious Jude Callegari, looking for something that might connect her with Rowling.

Judith Callegari, to give her full name, is a mother of two who lives in a large detached house in Claygate, Surrey. She is married to Paul Callegari, an employment lawyer with K&L Gates in the City, and on the afternoon of July 10, she shared a sensational secret on Twitter about Galbraith that she had been told by a lawyer. But it wasn’t her husband who had told her. It was Chris Gossage, the husband of Jude’s best friend, who worked for Russells.

The firm, based in Soho, is a highly regarded legal practice that represents clients in the entertainment industry, including Rowling. On Thursday, it issued a statement that finally solved the mystery: “We, Russells Solicitors, apologise unreservedly for the disclosure caused by one of our partners, Chris Gossage, in revealing to his wife’s best friend, Judith Callegari, during a private conversation that the true identity of Robert Galbraith was in fact JK Rowling. Whilst accepting his own culpability, the disclosure was made in confidence to someone he trusted implicitly. On becoming aware of the circumstances, we immediately notified JK Rowling’s agent. We can confirm that this leak was not part of any marketing plan and that neither JK Rowling, her agent nor publishers were in any way involved.”

Gossage joined Russells in 1999 and qualified as a solicitor in 2001. As a partner, he currently heads up the corporate department. The Solicitors Regulation Authority has so far refused to comment on whether the firm has been reported for breach of confidentiality.

It would surprise no one if Rowling has lodged a formal complaint. In a public statement, she all but issued a Cruciatus curse against Russells: “A tiny number of people knew my pseudonym and it has not been pleasant to wonder for days how a woman whom I had never heard of prior to Sunday night could have found out something that many of my oldest friends did not know.

“I had assumed that I could expect total confidentiality from Russells, a reputable professional firm, and I feel very angry that my trust turned out to be misplaced.”

After this, the names Gossage and Callegari may well feature as unflattering characters in the next Galbraith novel. But perhaps the real villain here is Twitter and the dangers of an idle, midnight tweet.

6 Amazing Ads Directors Made Before They Were Famous

0
0

Like in any other field, even the most talented movie directors don't get to just jump into the best jobs without paying their dues.

Many film directors start out on the writing side of movies. Others get their first jobs directing commercials and music videos.

We've rounded up some of the best commercials directors made before they were famous.

Before he made "Bad Boys" and "Transformers," Michael Bay made the original "Got Milk?" commercial in 1993.

Famous for "Se7en," "Fight Club," and "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," David Fincher's early works include the most intense Coca-Cola ad you'll ever see. This was also made in 1993.

Known best for "Alien," "Blade Runner," and the famous "1984" commercial for Apple, Ridley Scott got one of his early breaks with this Hovis ad in 1973.

Before he made "Pan's Labryinth" and this summer's "Pacific Rim," Guillermo del Toro directed (and starred in!) this campy 1991 Alka-Seltzer commercial.

Edgar Wright, creator of cult-hit "Shaun of the Dead," made this Pizza Hut commercial back in 2000.

After "The Elephant Man" and "Blue Velvet," but before "Twin Peaks" and "Mulholland Drive," David Lynch made a series of commercials for Calvin Klein in 1988.

It's DC vs. Marvel at the movies.

As Warner Bros. prepares to go to battle with Disney at theaters in 2015 with the newly announced Batman/Superman movie, The Hollywood Reporter says WB is also planning a "Flash" film and "Justice League" movie.

THR reports sources revealed plans for a "Flash" adaptation set for 2016 and a "Justice League" film for 2017.

Throughout DC history, there have been a few different members of the Justice League at any given time.

The original members include Superman, Batman, the Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and the Flash.

Other versions have included Hawkgirl/man, Black Canary, Green Arrow, Atom, and Zatanna.

The popular WB animated series included seven members with Flash and Wonder Woman.

At Comic-Con CW "Arrow" actor Stephen Arnell has said he'd love to be in a "Justice League" adaptation.

"I think that Green Arrow has an opportunity to mature in much the same way Iron Man did in the Marvel universe," Arnell told SciFiNow.

"It's always up to what's popular at the moment," he added. "Right now archery seems to be having a mini renaissance, so hopefully he can settle into a firm rotating member of the DC Justice League of America."

Bryan Cranston wore the best costume to Comic-Con.

The actor dressed up as his "Breaking Bad" character complete with a Heisenberg mask and no one knew.

According to AMC, he walked the floors of the San Diego Convention Center and blended right in with the crowd.

Celebrities, take note. This is how you walk through crowds of fans without getting noticed.
