Mariah Carey Performed In 3 Ridiculous Slings After Dislocating Her Shoulder

$

Last week, Mariah Carey tweeted that she dislocated her shoulder and teased that her sling would be "fashionable."

She wasn't joking.

On Saturday, Carey took the stage at the Major League Baseball All-Star Charity Concert at Central Park, where she performed with the New York Philharmonic.

Throughout her performance, Carey had THREE sling changes.

She started with this white fluffy number:

Mariah Carey sling

And then a team of highly-trained sling changers switched out the fluffy "winter wonderland" style ...

Mariah Carey sling

For this badazzled sling that perfectly matched her dress.

With a dress change clearly came a sling change. This sling was made fully of long, black feathers.

But with or without the dislocated shoulder wrapped in feathers, gems or white fluff, Mariah still rocked Central Park.

Here Is What A Record Label Sees When It Looks At Chris Brown

$

chris brown

Chris Brown has a history of beating women.

And just today, prosecutors moved to have his probation revoked over a hit-and-run incident.

But his label, Jive/RCA/Sony, is focused on other things.

They'll be putting out his new album, "X," sometime this summer (some reports say it's coming out tomorrow. We were not able to reach anyone at Sony to confirm).

We're confident the label is aware of Brown's problems.

But here, via the RIAA's database of certified album sales, is what his label probably sees when they look at Brown (for reference, "gold" = 500,000 units sold; platinum = 1 million):

chris brown 1

chris brown 2chris brown 3

It's true that Brown's sales have slowed slightly since his conviction in 2009. His 2011 album "F.A.M.E." went Gold, but none of the singles reached the 500,000 threshold in the U.S. His follow-up album, "Fortune," sold 300,000 copies in the U.S.

But his post-conviction singles sales continue to go gang-busters in Australia. Here's the view from 2011:

chris brown australia sales

And 2012:

 chris brown sales australia

How do these units sold translate into dollars?

The list price for a single is $1.29, and for an album $18.98.

Because of individual agreements between labels and distributors, not every unit will have been purchased for that amount, but it provides a ballpark estimate.

And it's a lot.

7 Things We Learned From The 'Sharknado' Creators' Reddit AMA

Sharknado Sharks

Over the weekend, the creators of "Sharknado" — SyFy's 90-minute killer sharkfest  — did a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA)

The film, featuring Tara Reid and Ian Ziering ("90210"),  made waves on Twitter last Thursday bringing in more than 600,000 tweets according to analytics firm Fizziology.

For reference, that's more tweets than the most talked about episode of "Game of Thrones" this season which only saw a total of 241,000 tweets.

Despite the social media enthusiasm, the show wasn't a huge hit in the ratings.

"Sharknado" drew in more than 1.3 million viewers, falling in line with ratings for similar original programs on the network.

Sunday afternoon, Director Anthony C. Ferrante and producer Devin Ward divulged about casting, the film budget, and whether a sequel may be in the works.

Check out the full AMA here.

Here are some of the best things we learned.

7. The budget for the film was near $1 million.

6. How they went about casting the film:

"A lot of the roles are standard submissions. For the bigger parts however, we really do go after actors that we think would fit the part. Our casting director G Webb has a knack for getting us some really big names."

5. It took a little less than three weeks to shoot the entire film.

"Officially it was an 18 day shoot with some pick-up days after. It had it's moments! There were some seriously stressful days for us but I think that's really all part of filmmaking. It's a process. Highlight for us both the house we flooded in an empty swimming pool. We had no idea if anything was going to work but it turned out to be a pretty awesome scene!"

4. There is a version of the movie without visual effects that sounds awesome.

"Actually there is a version of the movie that exists with just cut-out sharks in place of the VFX elements that is fairly entertaining."

3. Where the idea for "Sharknado" originated:

"The idea had been floating around for a long time and I even put a reference to it in a movie I wrote last year for SyFy. I'm just glad we finally got sharks in a tornado and people loved it."

2. How the team budgeted the film.

"Devin-

I budgeted this just like I would any other film. The most dynamic element was the weather. Practical rain is hard to do well and expensive. We scheduled the production so we could lump all our rain days together in one run. If only it rained in LA..."

1. And the question on everyone's mind. Will there be a sequel?

"You never know! It's all up to SyFy."

SyFy executive Thomas Vitale told The Hollywood Reporter that a sequel was brought up, but that nothing is concrete yet.

"We’ve had a lot of meetings, emails. I’m not being coy, [but] that’s obviously being talked about," said Vitale. "There may be some kind of announcement coming forth but there’s nothing going to be announced now just because we haven’t had real discussions with the real people we have to talk to about that."

Gangnam Style Turns One Year Old Today — Learn The Dance That Changed Everything

psy gangnam style danceExactly one year ago today, the music video for Psy's mega-hit "Gangnam Style" was uploaded onto YouTube.

In that one year, "Gangnam Style" has been viewed over 1.7 billion times– making it the most watched video on YouTube ever. For some perspective on the magnitude of "Gangnam Style," the second most watched YouTube video is Justin Bieber's "Baby" with 872 million views.

Bottom line, "Gangnam Style" is a catchy song and you don't need much hand-eye coordination to do the dance.

"The mindset of this dance is to dress classy and dance cheesy," Psy told Ellen DeGeneres.

While some people watch the music video and become overwhelmed at Psy's impressive dance skills, it's really a simple routine to learn.

"Imagine you're on a horse," Psy tells NY1 reporter Michelle Park

Here's What Psy Has Accomplished Since 'Gangnam Style' Debuted 1 Year Ago

It's been a full year since the explosive, inscrutable South Korean hit “Gangnam Style” from pop artist Psy first appeared on YouTube.

It seems like just yesterday that Psy’s signature horse gallop and light blue tuxedo jacket took over the Internet, but the song first hit YouTube on July 15, 2012, making today the one-year anniversary of the most-viewed video of all time.

“Gangnam Style” is a monster hit: the video has more than 1.7 billion views, becoming the first YouTube video to surpass one billion at the end of 2012.

The song earned Psy $8 million in YouTube revenue alone.

So what’s Psy been up to this past year? Not a ton. He weathered some controversy and attempted to come out with another viral sensation, but he’ll probably never again excite the world like he did with “Gangnam Style.”

September 2012: "Saturday Night Live" featured a sketch with downtrodden employees at a “Lids” store listening to "Gangnam Style" to lift their spirits. The real Psy joined a parody Psy for the finale.

Check out the sketch here.

October 2012: A month before the presidential election, College Humor skewered the lifestyle of wealthy Republican nominee Mitt Romney with a parody video titled “Mitt Romney Style.” The video generated almost 50 million views.

Watch it here.

Nov. 2012: Psy rode Madonna like a pony during a mash-up of "Gangnam Style" and "Give It 2 Me," saying the performance topped his list of accomplishments.

Lena Dunham was spotted filming the third season of HBO's "Girls" near Gramercy Park on Tuesday morning.

The brazen Brooklynite was wearing a printed button-down blouse, colbalt blue jeans, and an oversized messenger bag.

In the scene, she walked down the street while talking on the phone, paused on her mark, and ferociously dug into a salad bowl.

In between takes, she chatted with a possible crew member away from the crowds, on Park West and 21st St.

Zimmerman Juror Drops Book Plan, Says She Wants To Return To Life As It Was Before Trial

George Zimmerman Juror B37The George Zimmerman juror who on Monday announced plans to write a book about the trial has now backed out of the deal, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Here's the statement from Juror B37:

I realize it was necessary for our jury to be sequestered in order to protest [sic] our verdict from unfair outside influence, but that isolation shielded me from the depth of pain that exists among the general public over every aspect of this case.  The potential book was always intended to be a respectful observation of the trial from my and my husband’s perspectives solely and it was to be an observation that our "system" of justice can get so complicated that it creates a conflict with our "spirit" of justice.

Now that I am returned to my family and to society in general, I have realized that the best direction for me to go is away from writing any sort of book and return instead to my life as it was before I was called to sit on this jury.

The anonymous juror had initially planned to write the book with her lawyer husband but faced heavy criticism when she announced she signed with a literary agent less than 48 hours after the verdict came down.

Juror B37 also went on Anderson Cooper's CNN show Monday night to talk about the not guilty verdict.

Zimmerman was acquitted on second-degree murder charges Saturday for the shooting death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.

Comedy Central Steals Louis C.K.'s Business Model — But Admits It

$

0

louis c.k.

Louis C.K. is used to people stealing his jokes — but not his business model.

In December 2011, C.K. started a small DIY revolution in comedy when he decided to self-release his "Live at the Beacon Theater" special online. Charging fans $5 per download, he said he was trying to save fans money and bypass corporations.

Eighteen months later, Viacom-owned Comedy Central is unabashedly embracing his $5 download idea, saying C.K. proved it works for comics and fans alike. And yes, the comedy network sees the irony in a corporation adopting an approach designed to subvert corporations.

"We can't be indie rock. We're Viacom," said Steve Raizes, Comedy Central's vice president of enterprises. "However, we can be more human."

Comedy Central's adoption of "the Louis C.K. model," as it's come to be known, reflects both his influence and the new realities of the streaming era. He has also created a market for lower-priced comedy specials without hurting his fellow comics.

When fans buy $5 specials on Comedy Central's new platform, CC: Standup Direct, comedians receive twice as much cash per downloaded purchased as they do from each DVD sale, even though DVDs are higher priced. Standup Direct, which launched Thursday, may also help fans discover new comics.

daniel tosh tosh.0

"As a comedy nerd, it feels great to do that deal," Raizes said. "We approached every single comic that is on this platform to say, 'Hey, this is what we're doing, this is what you're going to get,' and the universal response was, 'Wow, that's great. I want to be involved.'"

The 22 comedians taking part include Daniel Tosh, Anthony Jeselnik, Chris Hardwick, Nick Kroll, Jeff Ross, John Mulaney and Todd Barry.

"I can't think of any drawbacks," Barry (left) told TheWrap. "I can tweet, Facebook, or email a link, and a person could download it immediately for $5 — a lot more appealing than ordering a DVD for twice the price. And yes, the payout is more for the comics."

Most comics would leap at the chance to work with Comedy Central. But if they don't want to, nothing the network is doing prevents them from selling their specials themselves, C.K.-style.

Under the old system, comedians would perform for a network like Time Warner's HBO or Viacom's Comedy Central. Their specials would then sell on DVD.

For example, the year before C.K. offered "Beacon," he aired his previous special, "Hilarious," on the Viacom, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Lions Gate Entertainment-owned Epix. A DVD of "Hilarious" now sells on DVD for $11.61 on Amazon, where you can also download it for $9.99.

Or you can skip "Hilarious," and download "Beacon" for $5.

Why is the cost so much lower? Because of C.K.'s scrappy approach.

Streaming has hollowed out the DVD market, and C.K. was the first big comedy star to bypass the middleman. He did everything himself on "Beacon," including writing, performing, directing and editing.

Even more radically, he was upfront with fans about his costs and profits. In a Dec. 13, 2011 open letter, he said he paid about $250,000 in production and online expenses. Within days, he made a million dollars, half of which he gave to his employees and several charities.

The New York Times declared him a "show business saint."

"Louis may have done it to avoid corporations, but it was also a very smart business model," Barry said. "He ended up with a million dollars in his PayPal account within a week. That probably wouldn't have happened if he went the conventional route."

C.K. said his early profit was about $200,000 — "less than I would have been paid by a large company to simply perform the show and let them sell it to you" -- but the money has continued to roll in since then.

C.K.'s publicist said he was unavailable for comment for this story.

aziz ansariNot every comedian has the upfront money — or the talent, or the following — to distribute his or her work without a corporate backer. But some, like top draws Aziz Ansari and Jim Gaffigan, were inspired by C.K. to self-release their own $5 specials directly. And when Tig Notaro delivered a daring performance last year about her battle with cancer, C.K. was so impressed that he began hosting it on his site, too.

C.K. has never claimed to be anti-corporation. He has worked for NBC shows, and "Louie" airs on FX. In perhaps his most honest moment, C.K. told fans after the "Beacon" release that he might still get back in bed with media companies.

"Of course I reserve the right to go back on all of this," he wrote, "and sign a massive deal with a company that pays me fat coin and charges you straight up the ass."

Sign major deals he did: He made one to have FX air the "Beacon" show. And his latest special, "Oh My God," aired on HBO in April. By then, he was a much bigger star than he was back in December 2011 — partly because of "Beacon," and partly because of the success of "Louie."

Comedy Central isn't as upfront about the economics of its download plan as C.K. was. It won't say, for example, exactly how much money comedians receive for downloads.

But it says it is being transparent with performers, and offering them new exposure. It hopes to introduce a feature in which it would recommend more comedians to fans based on their downloads.

"In the future, they may have recommendations based on your likes," said Raizes. "We should have some sort of learning algorithm. If you like Mitch Hedburg, you're gonna like Steven Wright."

One huge plus for fans, though not necessarily comedians: People who buy downloads can share them on as many devices as they like.

kevin hartC.K. explicitly asked fans not to steal his work, and says few did. Comedy Central also hopes fans won't rip off their favorite comedians, though it has placed no restrictions on sharing downloads. That means someone who enjoys Barry's special, for example, can pass it along to dozens of friends.

"It doesn't really bother me because you can share a DVD," said Barry. "Or copy it to your hard drive and share it."

And even being ripped off by fans can have an upside: Kevin Hart has said he owes his success in part to bootlegged copies of "Soul Plane." He is now one of the top-selling comics in the country, and his new concert film, "Let Me Explain," has grossed more than $26 million since its premiere earlier this month.

Rachel Jeantel

Radio personality Tom Joyner has offered Rachel Jeantel, the friend of Trayvon Martin who spoke to him shortly before he died, a full scholarship to any Historically Black College or University she chooses.

The website Joyner founded, BlackAmericaWeb.com, confirmed the news. Jeantel spoke to Joyner on his radio show Tuesday morning.

He said to her: "If you want to graduate from high school, and go to an HBCU, even if it’s not in Florida but especially Florida, like Florida Memorial, Edward Waters or FAMU, if you want to do that, I want to help you do that. I will help you get tutors to get you out of high school, tutors to help you pass the SAT and I will give you a full ride scholarship to any HBCU you’d like."

Joyner said he was moved by Jeantel's testimony. The funding for the scholarship will come from the Tom Joyner Foundation.

Jeantel reluctantly took the stand to testify for the prosecution in the second-degree murder trial of George Zimmerman. She told the courtroom that she heard Martin say "get off, get off" before the call cut out and Zimmerman shot him. During her testimony, which spanned two days, she was mocked online by people insulting her dress, mannerisms, and intelligence.

Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges on Saturday.

For $2 Million, Here's What Lindsay Lohan Will Tell Oprah After Rehab

Oprah Winfrey Lindsay Lohan

When Lindsay Lohan leaves her 90-day court ordered rehab stint on July 31, the 27-year-old will head straight to Oprah Winfrey's couch for an in-depth interview.

The actress has also agreed to shoot an eight-part docu-series for Winfrey’s OWN cable network that will chronicle her journey to rebuild her career and stay sober.

The interview and special will cover Lohan's struggles, her career and her plans for the future.

"OWN will air an exclusive interview with Oprah and Lindsay Lohan that will tape and air in August and an eight-part documentary series with Lindsay for 2014," confirms an OWN Spokesperson.

But how much money did it take for Lohan to agree to spill her guts?

A whopping $2 million, reports TMZ, noting that it's a better deal than the $1 million she got to pose topless for Playboy.

While Lohan shoots her OWN reality series, Winfrey will also reportedly supply the actress with two fully-paid assistants and a stylist.

But Lohan's first, exclusive post-rehab interview — and subsequent reality series — is a coveted get for Winfrey, and worth the cash.

"Lohan has turned down unscripted project offers for years, preferring to focus on scripted acting roles," notes Entertainment Weekly.

Lohan recently had guest-star appearances on "Glee," Charlie Sheen's "Anger Management," Lifetime’s "Liz & Dick" and the upcoming "The Canyons."

Meanwhile Winfrey Oprah has scored a string of coveted celebrity interviews, from Lance Armstrong to Rihanna, for "Oprah’s Next Chapter"  helping ratings raise 32% this year from the first quarter.

As for what Lohan's family thinks of the deal, "It's fantastic!" mom Dina Lohan gushed toE! News, adding "If anyone is going to help mentor you, it's going to be Oprah."

Dina says she will "possibly" appear on the docu-series. "It's about family … and I'm family."

And watch out New Yorkers, Dina adds that Lindsay will "be getting an apartment in New York" after she leaves Betty Ford and likely shooting the docu-series in the Big Apple.

Drummer For Legendary Indie Rock Band Calls On Artists To Starve Spotify And Pandora

$

0

damon krukowski drummerDamon Krukowski is one half of Damon and Naomi, a highly respected avant-rock duo.

He also played drums in Galaxie 500, one of the most influential indie rock bands ever.

Krukowski has been one of the most articulate voices in the debate over whether artists are getting what they deserve from new music distribution platforms like Pandora and Spotify.

And yesterday, as chronicled by Storify user Ahmad Zaghal, he took to Twitter to respond to the news that Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke was pulling his material from Spotify.

Krukowski basically goes "Ransom" on the platforms, saying artists should cut their losses and instead focus on starving the music distributors:

This reveals the sad, brutal truth about the whole royalty rate argument: musicians are probably lucky to be getting what they're getting.

That may seem reductive.

But the "Napster generation" is so called because they grew up with the expectation of paying zilch for their music. Even Krukowski has admitted that he subscribes to Spotify (we're not sure if these Tweets now mean he's off it).

The folks at the Trichordist blog make a similar point today, writing that Google is an even greater offender than either Pandora or Spotify when it comes to compensating artists — because basically, Google doesn't:

One of the primary reasons Spotify pays so little is because so many more pay nothing at all. Google alone is tracking millions and millions of infringement notices to over 200,000 known illegally operating businesses.

For those who unaware, Ad Sponsored Piracy is the mechanism by which illegal and infringing online businesses get paid to display advertising on their sites. These sites do not license any of the music they distribute nor do they share any of this revenue with artists or rights holders. In other words Silicon Valley corporate interests pocket 100% of the money and pay artists nothing.

Simply put, ad supported piracy is the practice whereby ad networks like Google’s Adsense profit by placing ads on pirate sites like www mp3skull com.

Bottom line: if you're a listener and you want to support your favorite artists, you should buy their music.

Sadly, if you're an artist, you probably need to lower your the expectation that you'll be able to support yourself from music alone.

Bryan Cranston Vividly Details How He Would Have Murdered His Real-Life Ex-Girlfriend

Bryan Cranston GQ cover

Bryan Cranston may play a sinister meth lord in "Breaking Bad," but it turns out the actor has a dark side as well.

In a new interview with GQ magazine, Cranston reveals "I had one girlfriend I wanted to kill.”

According to GQ:

It was a woman he dated after his short-lived first marriage. She was a drug addict, terribly unstable, and she followed Cranston to New York when he left L.A. to work on the soap opera Loving. She stalked him, leaving messages on his answering machine: “I’m gonna kill you. I’m gonna cut your balls off. I’m gonna have your dick sawed off.” Finally, one day, the woman showed up at Cranston’s Upper West Side apartment, banging on the door.

Cranston recalls, “And I envisioned myself killing her. It was so clear. My apartment had a brick wall on one side, and I envisioned opening the door, grabbing her by the hair, dragging her inside, and shoving her head into that brick wall until brain matter was dripping down the sides of it. Then I shuddered and realized how clearly I saw that happening. And I called the police because I was so afraid. I was temporarily insane—capable of doing tremendous damage to her and to myself.”

As part of its August cover profile, the magazine asks Cranston whether he believes in evil.

Apparently, people just won't stop pestering Rep. Trey Radel (R-Fla.) for his opinion's on Jay-Z's new album, "Magna Carta Holy Grail."

The congressman took to Twitter Tuesday afternoon to give his followers what they wanted: a live-tweeted review of the rapper's latest project. Though the album's been getting its fair share of lukewarm reviews, Jay-Z has a big fan in Radel:

Radel loved "Holy Grail," Jay-Z's collaboration with Justin Timberlake:

Jay-Z's the only one who knows how to keep it real, unlike some other rappers Radel could (and does) mention:

He had a lot of enthusiasm for "Picasso Baby," which Jay-Z recently performed to a crowd in a Chelsea gallery:

And an appreciation for the intelligence behind "Oceans":

Excitement seemed to peak with "Somewhereinamerica," Hova's indulgent anthem to his own success:

Radel loved the throwback sound of "Crown:"

Not entirely sure how he feels about "Heaven," given the earlier diss to Kanye West:

Jay-Z made "BBC" a family affair and collaborated with superstar Beyonce, but Radel was more concerned about the reference to Long Island rapper/producer duo Rakim and Erik B:

He didn't mind when "Nickels and Dimes" upped the intensity:

And to all the critics who've called "Tom Ford"ostentatious bragging, Radel had Jay-Z's back:

After about an hour, the review came to an end. Now we're dying to know what he'll have to say when the new Wu Tang Clan album drops later this month.

Tom CruiseTom Cruise surprised a class of 60 acting students at the Joanne Baron/D.W. Brown Studio in Santa Monica, Calif. and offered some valuable words of wisdom during his "stirring" commencement speech.

“He said that when you do finally get the chance of being in a movie, don’t spend the time in the trailer,” one witness told the NY Post. “He said you need to experience everything on the movie, talk to everyone on the crew, the grips, everyone. Learn everything you can. You will never get that time back.”

The witness added, “He talked about trying to be as prepared as possible, and that you can only depend on yourself.”

Cruise remembered his first film role in "Taps" fondly, telling the group, “At night, I couldn’t sleep because I thought, ‘This is my dream.’”

But Cruise says he has remained in control of his longstanding career, telling the grads “The thing that I always felt about myself in life is that I’m making the decisions, for better or worse, right or wrong.”

“It was one of the most inspiring speeches we’ve had,” said a source at the boutique school. “It was so much more than a lecture about what to do in an audition.”
