The Royal Baby Is Worth $376 Million To The British Economy

$
0
0

kate middleton william pregnantRaj Solomon, proprietor of Piccadilly Cards, a thin sliver of a store flogging souvenirs opposite the Royal Academy of Arts in central London, is expecting a lucrative summer.

During the Jubilee celebrations last year he could barely keep pace with the demand for Queen Elizabeth II key rings and tea towels. Next month, with the expected birth of Britain’s heir to the throne, it will be coats of arms pacifiers and “I love my Uncle Harry” bibs. “Everyone’s waiting for that baby,” says Mr. Solomon happily.

The firstborn of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge is due in July. During that month and until the end of August, British retail sales will get a £243 million ($376 million) boost, predicts the Centre for Retail Research (CRR). Its report, published last month estimated that Brits will spend an extra £62 million ($94 million) on alcohol and £80 million ($121 million) on souvenirs and toys in two months.

Even weeks before the baby’s due date, barely an opportunity has been missed to cash in on his or her imminence.

Butter London, a high-end cosmetics brand, has put out a $20 nail varnish called Pitter Patter. Across the country, hotels and restaurants are offering Royal Baby showers designed to make pregnant women feel like duchesses. The shop at Highgrove, Prince Charles’s home, is selling handmade leather baby shoes at $34 a pair.

“We didn’t experience such excitement when William was born in 1982 and certainly not when Prince Charles was born in 1948,” says Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine. “I think it’s the great immediacy it all has now, thanks to the Internet.”

Indeed Joshua Barnfield, director of CRR, says he estimates Brits “will spend three or four times more than at the births of Prince William and Harry.”

Patriotism, consumerism

The Internet, with its speedy dissemination of information and selling power is one reason for the big spending. Another is a resurgence of interest in the royal family following the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011. Their low-level glamor and evident happiness has made them – along with Prince Harry, who has shown a surprising flair for international diplomacy – the most popular royals in years.

The wedding, and the following summer’s celebrations for Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne, showed off the spectacular pomp at which Britain still excels.

Months later the 2012 Summer Olympics, followed by the most watched Paralympics in history, heightened the patriotic mood. At a time when post-empire Britain has little to distinguish it from other countries, patriotism and support for the royal family are easily conflated in the popular imagination.

But changing behavior of consumers has also played its part.

“We do a lot of research into consumer behavior and there is an increasing tendency to celebrate things these days,” says Mr. Barnfield. “If someone had a party to mark a royal baby’s birth in the '70s or '80s people would say, ‘Er, why are you doing that?’”

Pauline Maclaren, professor of marketing and consumer research at Royal Holloway College at the University of London, is writing a book on consumers and the branding of the royal family which will be published by California University Press next year.

She says while serious collectors of memorabilia are probably royalists, “a lot of people are just buying these things for fun. It’s seen as part of being British rather than any more serious support of the monarchy.”

Cashing in?

One company likely to do well out of the birth is Party Pieces, owned by Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, which has revamped its website, adding a “baby arrival” range with blue and pink balloons and rattles.

This has prompted many newspaper headlines suggesting the Middletons are exploiting their grandchild’s bloodline.

But with both Highgrove and the Royal Collection – which pumps profits into the upkeep of the royal palaces and is offering a $20 guardsman onesie – also selling baby paraphernalia, it would be unfair to lay all the blame for commercializing the birth at the doors of the Middletons.

"The Royal Collection does things in a rather more subtle style than some sellers,” says Mr. Little of Majesty magazine. “It will, I am sure, produce commemorative china, but using coats of arms rather than the faces of William and Kate.”

But any suggestion that the royal family feels the Middleton family is overstepping the mark he attributes to “media mischief. There will always be people who wish to remind us of Kate’s middle-class background.”

Partying and commemorative china aside, the royal birth is likely to impact sales in other sectors. Just as dresses, especially maternity dresses, have sold out as Kate Middleton has been snapped wearing them, so sales of whatever buggy the third in line to the throne goes out in are expected to soar.

The betting business, which tends to do well at big national events, has a protracted selling window with a royal birth, thanks to bets placed on names. Alexandra and George are currently in the lead, while bets are also being placed on the baby’s hair color (brown, unsurprisingly, is ahead).

'Free publicity for Britain'

Tourism, too, will get a big boost from overseas visitors curious about the kinds of people who inhabit castles. “The royal family generates free worldwide publicity for Britain – you can’t put a value on that,” says Patricia Yates, director of Strategy at VisitBritain, the tourism agency.

Then there is the more general boost that the birth is likely to give the economy, boosting the confidence of consumers and investors.

A government study published this month suggested last summer delivered £2.5 billion ($3.9 billion) in foreign direct investment resulting from business events launched during the Olympics.

“The economy is already improving,” says Barnfield. "The birth will be another uptick in the right direction."

Universal's "Despicable Me 2" blew away all analyst expectations this holiday weekend.

The return of Steve Carell as the villain with a heart of gold, Gru, and his little yellow henchmen earned a massive $142.1 million domestic haul over the five-day weekend.

Expectations for the sequel to the 2010 film were set around $100 million.

Over the course of the three-day weekend, the yellow minions brought in an estimated $82.5 million. (That number should go up a little since the night's not over.)

That's more than the $82.4 million of Disney and Pixar's "Monsters University."

The original film debuted to $56.4 million.

Worldwide, the film is currently hovering around the $300 million mark"Monsters U" is currently at $400 million

"Despicable Me 2" is now the fourth-highest grossing opening weekend for any animated film.

MovieYearOpening Weekend Gross
"Shrek The Third"2007$121.6 million
"Toy Story 3"2010$110.3 million
"Shrek 2"2004$108 million
"Despicable Me 2"2013$82.5 million
"Monsters University"2013$82.4 million

Compared to previous Independence Day weekends, the little yellow minions place third only behind "Spider-Man 2" ($88.2 million) and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" ($97.9 million).

For a five-day weekend total, the film beat out 2010's "Toy Story 3" which accumulated $141 million in the same time frame.

The film's marketing campaign was excellent.

Universal used the appeal of its loveable yellow minions to get people excited for the film. The little yellow guys were ubiquitous in a blimp — called the Despicablimp— that toured the country, teasersfor the film, commercials including one for Progressive, and as toys in McDonalds' Happy Meals.

Another plus for the movie was that it was cheaper than most other animated films to make.

"Despicable Me 2" cost an estimated $76 million. Most other animated films cost at least $100 million

"Toy Story 3" cost an estimated $200 million while "Shrek 2" cost $150 million to produce.

A spin-off sequel is already in the works for Gru's minions next year.

'Big Brother' Airs Racist Remarks Said By Contestants

CBS has decided to air some of the prejudiced remarks made on its summer reality series "Big Brother."

Last week, a few videos showing several houseguests making racial comments about fellow contestants hit the web. The comments were made during the 24-hour live feeds CBS offers of the show.

Sunday evening, the network aired some of these clips showing one of the houseguests, Aaryn Gries making slurs about some of the people on the show.

The footage was edited along with other houseguests commenting on the inappropriateness of Gries' language in the house.

"She makes comments that are completely inappropriate where she makes fun of other people for what they look like and their ethnicity," said contestant Amanda Zuckerman. "I think it's going to hurt her a lot in the game and outside the game."

And it has.

Last week, the 22-year-old college student was dropped from Zephyr Talent Agency due to her comments.

Soon after she was let go from a model search by magazine, Bella Petite.

Editor Ann Lauren announced the dismissal of Gries promoting the magazine in a letter to readers:

"I have determined that Ms. Gries is no longer a positive representation of Bella Petite's brand and Bella Petite will not be featuring her in any promotions related to the model search in accordance with the rules of our model search. I certainly appreciate Ms. Gries right to express herself, but simply do feel that her involvement in any of our model search promotions going forward would be appropriate given our core principles and values at Bella Petite Magazine."

big brother ginamarieContestants on the show aren't allowed any contact with the outside world, so as far as Gries knows, she still has her jobs outside the "Big Brother" house.

Gries hasn't been the only one to make indecent comments about her housemates.

32-year-old GinaMarie Zimmerman was also fired from her job of five years as a beauty coordinator after video surfaced online of the Staten Island native making inappropriate comments about others.

According to the live feeds, train conductor Spencer Clawson also participated in the racial remarks.

In addition, he engaged in misogynistic comments about the women of the house along with contestant Jeremy McGuire.

Clawson's employer Union Pacific has since put him on an unpaid leave of absence for his conduct while he's in the "Big Brother" house.

CBS' airing of the racial remarks comes after news spread of contestants being let go for using prejudice comments on the show.

Previous house guest Ragan Fox also wrote an open letter to the network on his blog asking for the footage to be aired.

'Despicable Me 2' Zaps Away Disney's 'Lone Ranger' Bomb—Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

$

johnny depp despicable me

As expected, "The Lone Ranger" bombed at theaters over the holiday weekend.

Originally, analysts pegged the Western to bring in around $60-$70 million over the course of five days. Johnny Depp's big-budget film didn't manage to earn half of that.

With $29 million, the film earned slightly less in three days than last year's big-budget bust "John Carter ($30.2 million).

So it was little surprise Steve Carell and the little yellow minions of "Despicable Me 2" rocketed past Disney's long-delayed and troubled blockbuster.

The sequel to Universal's 2010 film performed better than expected, easily having one of the highest-grossing opening weekends for an animated film.

In five days, the despicable minions earned more than 2010's "Toy Story 3" in the same time frame.

Another weekend shocker was the success of Kevin Hart's comedy "Let Me Explain." which is now the fifth highest-grossing stand-up to date.

Also worth mentioning is the performance of Fox Searchlight's "The Way, Way Back" also starring Carell earned $575,000 in 19 theaters upon its debut.

Out of the top ten this include "Star Trek Into Darkness" after eight weeks. J.J. Abrams sequel has earned a worldwide total of $443.9 million.

"Fast & Furious 6" also drops four spots in its seventh week in theaters. The sequel should hit $700 million worldwide this week.

Here are this week's winners and losers in Hollywood:

10. Lionsgate and Summit's magic movie "Now You See Me" stays in the top ten earning $2.8 million. The unexpected hit featuring a plethora of talent from Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson to Morgan Freeman has earned $169.5 million at theaters.

9. Seth Rogan's apocalyptic comedy "This is the End" drops three spots earning $5.8 million in week four. Made on an estimated $32 million budget, the Sony/Columbia picture has earned more than $90 million at theaters.

8. Kevin Hart's second turn at a stand-up comedy film, "Let Me Explain" was another hit for Summit this weekend earning $17.5 million. It's now the fifth highest-grossing stand-up film ahead of his 2011 film. At the least, it should pass the gross of Martin Lawrence's 2002 stand-up which earned $19.2 million at theaters.

7. "Man of Steel" drops two spots and 45% at theaters this week earning $11.4 million. In its fourth week, the reboot, which cost Warner Bros. an estimated $225 million, has earned $586.8 million at theaters.

6. "White House Down" may have only dipped two spots at theaters in week two with $13.5 million, but the Channing Tatum action flick will need much more than that if it wants to hit its estimated $150 million production budget. The film isn't performing well overseas with foreign sales only accounting for little more than 35% of its $67.9 million box-office earnings. For what it's worth, at thesame point, similar film "Olympus Has Fallen" was only narrowly ahead of Tatum's film with a domestic gross of $55 million.

5. Instead, even Brad Pitt's zombie thriller "World War Z" earned more than Tatum's thriller with $18.2 million in its third week. The film, which had production delays and saw its production budget raise to north of $200 million, according to a Vanity Fair cover article, is doing well at theaters. "WWZ" has earned $366.2 million worldwide.

4. With another animated feature out, "Monsters University" fell 57% this week earning $19.6 million in its third week. The prequel to the 2001 movie has earned $400.5 million at theaters.

3. The dynamic combination of Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in "The Heat" continues its monster performance in week two earning $25 million. The film, which cost an estimated $43 million to produce has brought in $93 million for Fox in two weeks.

2. "The Lone Ranger" may have came in second overall at the box office this weekend, but it was a big hit for Disney with only $29.4 million over the course of three days. Over the long holiday weekend, the film earned $48.9 million domestically, far short of the projected $70 million analysts expected. So far, the $215+ million dollar film has earned $73.2 million worldwide.

1. It was a despicably awesome weekend for Universal's yellow minions. The return of the funny little yellow characters in "Despicable Me 2" earned more than the opening of "Monsters University" with $82.5 million. Worldwide, the film has already earned $293.2 million. It should surpass the worldwide total of Pixar's film in no time. All this on an estimated budget of $76 million — low for an animated feature.

"Man of Steel" has only been out for a month and fans already want to see Russell Crowe back — but not in a sequel.

Instead, fans have been asking the actor if he'd be up to return in a prequel centered around Superman's home planet of Krypton.

Crowe took to Twitter to respond to the masses telling them he would gladly reprise his role as Clark Kent's father, Jor-El. Fans should just let "Man of Steel" production company Legendary know.

In the four weekends since its release, "Man of Steel" has earned an impressive $586.8 million worldwide.

The latest Superman reboot had the largest debut weekend of any superhero origin movie with a massive $116.6 million haul.

It also set the June record for highest-weekend opening.

There are already talks of a sequel in the works, and hopefully a much-anticipated "Justice League" film down the road.

Lady Gaga Is Trying To Hide 'Sensitive' Legal Documents From The Public

Lady Gaga has attempted to block the release of "sensitive, private and personal information" as part of an ongoing court battle between two of the singer's former collaborators.

According to website TMZ, Gaga has filed a legal request to seal certain details of the ongoing litigation between the talent scout Wendy Starland and Gaga's former producer, Rob Fusari. If certain information were released, her lawyers claimed, it would "inflict significant personal and professional harm upon" the Poker Face star.

Starland and Fusari have been battling in court since 2010, when Starland filed a lawsuit claiming she was owed money from the early part of Gaga's career. In Starland's version of events, Fusari was searching for a "unique female singer, under the age of 25, who could be the female equivalent of the lead singer of the band the Strokes". If Starland found a potential star, Fusari said, they would co-operate on her career and share equally in the revenues.

Starland introduced Fusari to Lady Gaga, then Stefani Germanotta, in 2005. Over the next two years, Fusari and Gaga began dating, wrote songs together and allegedly invented the singer's pop persona. Although they split before Gaga became a superstar, Fusari is believed to have collected a payout – in 2010, they settled a pair of duellingmultimillion-dollar lawsuits. Starland claims she received nothing.

Apparently a judge has yet to rule on Gaga's request to seal court documents. The 27-year-old recently topped Forbes' World's Most Powerful Musicians list, which is based on earnings, social media and press mentions, and is currently completing work on her third studio album, Artpop, while Starland is trying to build her own pop career.

A Royal Title Has Been Chosen For Prince William and Kate Middleton's Unborn Baby

Buckingham Palace has just given official word declaring Prince William and Kate Middleton's unborn child's royal title.

While the  couple doesn't yet know the baby's sex, their first born — the future  King or Queen of England — shall be called ... drum roll please ...

His or Her Royal Highness the Prince or Princess of Cambridge.

"Considering the fact that dad and mom are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, it's not exactly a shocker that their little one should take the surname," explains E! Online. "What is unique, though, is that this royal baby will be the first ever Prince or Princess of Cambridge."

The Mayor of Cambridge, Paul Sandars, told the Daily Mail the royal baby's title "a great honour" to the historical university town, which is located about 50 miles north of London.

As for the child's first name, experts are betting that the little royal will be called "George" if a boy and "Alexandra" if a girl.

Other frontrunner female names include Alice, Eleanor, Charlotte and Frances, and James as an additional top pick for a baby boy.

The sex of the baby will be announced on an easel outside of Buckingham Palace after Middleton has successfully given birth.

The baby's name could remain a secret for weeks after that.

While Middleton's reported due date isn't until July 13, the paparazzi have already been camped outside St. Mary's hospital since last week.

My Song 'Heaven Is A Place On Earth' Was Played More Than 3 Million Times On Pandora And I Was Paid Less Than $40 (P)

$

record heaven is a place on earthEditor's note: Ellen Shipley co-wrote the Belinda Carlisle hit "Heaven Is A Place On Earth." The song topped the charts in both the US and UK in 1987. Shipley's comments, reproduced below, originally appeared on DigitalMusicNews.com, and we are republishing it here with site editor Paul Resnikoff's permission.

It is interesting and very disturbing that no one is addressing the SONGWRITER's situation in this Pandora debacle.

Pandora wishes to REDUCE the amount of royalties that songwriters have already seen CUT in 2005.

Let me give you an example of what Pandora is paying in royalties to SONGWRITERS--not the performers, but the people who write the songs--the foundation of the music world---

PANDORA ----"Heaven Is A Place On Earth"  (co-written)

accounting period for 3 months-----3,112,300 streams

My Pandora royalty .................$39.61

AND they want us to take an EIGHTY FIVE PERCENT CUT!!!

Does that give you an understanding of the meager, insulting, outrageous amount of money songwriters are being paid from PANDORA and SPOTIFY and YOUTUBE and GOOGLE  (I received 15 cents from GOOGLE the other day)?

PANDORA talks a great deal about their need to make a profit and to survive.... but they could care less about the fate of those creators who already are hurting so badly, they are dropping out of music.

FACT:

According to the FEDERAL CENSUS, we have lost 45% of our professional songwriters in the last ten years or even less (since the advent of streaming and piracy on the Internet depriving us of earning our LEGAL royalties)

So--here is the question:

WHY is it alright for PANDORA to want to exist and grow and earn profits while it is NOT alright for the SONGWRITERS to SURVIVE, be respected, earn a fair royalty?

PANDORA's model is failing-- because as Steve Jobs recognized much earlier on when he rejected the idea of Streaming Digital radio--they don't have a business plan that gives them a way (such as ad revenue) to earn a profit OTHER THAN NOT PAYING FOR MUSIC!

Listen Up Everyone Please:

Without the Songwriters who create music for artists who do NOT write their own songs, there will be little if any music when you go to PANDORA OR SPOTIFY OR YOUTUBE....

I am grateful for my success as a Grammy-nominated, hit songwriter....I am grateful that my songs have reached millions of people and meant something to them in their lives....

But I will NOT perpetuate the myth that somehow Songwriters should give their music away for free or let it be stolen by Corporations interested in their own profits by any means possible...

Let the voice of the Songwriters Be Heard!  Send a petition --allow us to be represented at all these meetings between the music world and those who would seek to destroy what we have worked so long and hard to achieve in our lives.

Add President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama to the long list of high profile people Amanda Bynes has called "ugly" on her Twitter account.

On Monday morning, the 27-year-old former Nickelodeon star tweeted, unprovoked:

At least the president is in good company.

Bynes regularly calls rapper Drake ugly, and has also deemed Jenny McCarthy, Chrissy Teigen, Rihanna,  Courtney Love, RuPaul and even her dad and sister as ugly.

But this isn't the first time Bynes has tweeted at Obama.

When the troubled starlet was charged with driving under the influence following an April arrest in which she allegedly struck an L.A. County sheriff's cruiser, she called on the president to "fire the cop who arrested me."

"Hey @BarackObama... I don't drink," read a tweet on the actress' verified Twitter account. "Please fire the cop who arrested me. I also don't hit and run. The end."

@BarackObama has yet to respond to either of Bynes' tweets.

Jay-Z's Elderly Subway Companion Reviews His New Album: 'Very Sexy'

jay-z subway ride

In October, Jay-Z rode the subway to his eighth and final concert at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

While riding the underground public transportation, the rapper was seated next to a 67-year-old woman named Ellen Grossman, who had no idea who he was.

"Are you famous?" the visual artist asked him, to which Jay-Z responded "Not very famous – you don't know me. But I'll get there some day."

Since that encounter, which was caught on tape and made the rounds on YouTube, Grossman  attended Jay-Z's New Year's Eve concert at Barclays and got caught up to speed on the rapper's rise to fame.

And after last week's release of Jay's new album Magna Carta Holy Grail, MTV News asked Grossman to listen and review her famous new friend's latest work.

"It sounds like he's really going deep into his heart and into fatherhood and even the meaning of fame," Grossman said of her early impressions. "[He's saying] that the money's nice, but there's life beyond that, that he's exploring. I picked that up from the papers but I felt it in the man too, when I met him. That he had a depth to him."

"I don't get all of the words but I get a lot of them and I'm really enjoying it," she admitted after an initial listen. "I like jazz and what's called 'new music' and I can relate to all the soundscapes, it's really innovative stuff."

Grossman interpreted the song "Part II (On The Run)" feat. Beyoncé as "very sexy."

"I heard Jay-Z refer to himself as an outlaw and I think [Beyoncé's] response seemed to be that she would embrace it all," she tells MTV. "There's real connection and real willingness to show their vulnerability, even though I suspect they would want [their relationship to] remain private. What they're putting out in their art is really opening themselves up. It was pretty awesome."

These 4 Charts Show How Badly 'The Lone Ranger' Bombed At Theaters

the lone ranger

"The Lone Ranger" bombed at the box office this weekend.

The film earned $29.4 million over the three-day weekend and $48.6 million over the entire holiday.

Just how poor are those numbers?

The Western cost an estimated $225 million to $250 million to produce.

Initial estimates had the film earning between $60-$70 million at the end of the Independence Day weekend.

Here's another way put Johnny Depp's latest box-office dud into perspective.

In its first three-day weekend it performed worse than Disney's big box-office flop "John Carter."

the lone ranger john carter chart

(The film's five-day performance did do better than "John Carter" — $48.9 million vs. $35.5 million.)

It barely performed better than Will Smith's "Wild Wild West" — a Warner Bros. Western that debuted in 1999.

the lone ranger wild wild west

"Wild Wild West" was one of the costliest films ever made at an estimated $170 million back in '99.

Universal's poorly reviewed "Cowboys & Aliens" had a better opening weekend than it.

the lone ranger cowboys and aliens

2011's "Cowboys & Aliens" cost an estimated $163 million to produce.

And the final nail in the coffin:

Johnny Depp's last box-office dud, "Dark Shadows" earned slightly more than the film opening weekend.

With any luck, Depp's worldwide appeal may help the film pick up some slack at the foreign box office. So far, the film has earned just $23 million overseas.

It's not a good week for Brazil.

First, a soccer referee and player were both murdered in a sordid fashion, and now a video has surfaced of rapper MC Daleste being shot and killed while performing at a public housing building on Saturday night in the neighborhood of San Martin.

The 20-year-old, whose birth name was Daniel Pellegrine, was mid-song when a bullet struck him, causing the musician to slump to the ground.

Pellegrine was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

No information has been released on potential suspects or whether any arrests have been made, but one unnamed friend posted a statement on Facebook calling Pellegrine a "victim of intolerance."

Pellegrine had a sizable following in Brazil, with his Facebook page garnering over 93,000 likes and over 88,000 Twitter followers.

One audience member caught the entire incident on tape and the video has since received nearly 4 million hits. The bullet hits around 1:05. Watch at your own risk.

Lauryn Hill has checked in to prison in Connecticut to serve a three-month sentence for tax evasion, according to the Associated Press.

The Grammy-award winning singer pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges June 2012

Hill failed to report more than $1.8 million in taxes from 2005 to 2007.

The AP reports the minimum security prison in Danbury houses inmates in dormitory-like living spaces where they are expected to perform maintenance, food service, and landscaping jobs.

The singer originally faced up to three years in prison for misdemeanor counts of federal tax evasion. Hill paid back more than $900,000 in back taxes due earlier this year.

In May, the former Fugees singer was sentenced to three months in prison.

Hill revealed in a Tumblr post last year she failed to file her taxes as a form of outright civil disobedience saying she "embraced [her] right to resist a system intentionally opposing [her] right to whole and integral survival."

Hill recently debuted her first song in years this past May titled "Neurotic Society."

A little over a year ago, Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson sat alone at a table during the after-party for the premiere of Oliver Stone's “Savages” and somewhat plaintively asked a reporter from TheWrap when the abuse would end.

After years of costly flops including “The Wolfman," “Cowboy & Aliens” and, more recently, “Battleship,” Fogelson felt like the media's whipping post.

But a funny thing happened in the days after that premiere. A movie called  “Ted” opened to more than $50 million domestically and went on to gross more than $500 million worldwide. Universal has been on a tear ever since, this summer solidifying its 180-degree turn to unexpected box office dominance.

Of the 14 movies Universal has released in that time, 10 debuted at No. 1 at the box office in their first weekend in wide release, and the last seven all bowed at No. 1, the most recent being “Despicable Me 2.”

That one grossed more than $140 million over the Fourth of July weekend, ensuring that it would not only be the summer’s top animated movie — beating animation kings Disney-Pixar, Fox, DreamWorks Animation and Sony — but also one of the summer’s biggest success stories ever.

universal studios hits“After Adam got elevated to the position he’s in now, he and Donna began to formulate a new strategy,” Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination Entertainment, Universal’s animation partner and the producer of “Despicable Me," told TheWrap. “What you saw post-'Battleship' is that strategy starting to kick into gear.”

Supported by longtime Universal Studios President Ron Meyer, the studio leaders partnered with successful creators like Jason Blum ("The Purge") and Seth MacFarlane ("Ted"), sought out new franchises and set a series of smart scheduling decisions and bold marketing plans. Studio executives spoke to TheWrap for this story but declined to go on the record.

Universal had previously succeeded with thrillers like "Safe House" and R-rated comedies like "Bridesmaids." But franchises were a weak spot; when it tried to make blockbuster films based on existing brands– like “Battleship” – it failed.  The “Bourne” movies were stuck without star Matt Damon, and “Fast & Furious” almost sputtered to defeat with "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” in 2006.

universal studios misses

This year the studio succeeded in rejuvenating both “Fast and Furious” and "Bourne" movies, with Jeremy Renner replacing Damon in the latter. Even the reboot of the dusty “American Pie” franchise made more than $230 million worldwide.

Still, no movie exemplifies Universal's restorative powers more than “Fast & Furious.” The 2011 installment, “Fast Five,” almost went straight-to-DVD. Yet Universal trusted its marketing team and director Justin Lin to steer the franchise into a new era, from a street-racing story into a series of global heist movies.

This summer’s "Fast & Furious 6," has made almost $700 million across the globe. Also pivotal to the rebirth of the "Fast" movies was their appeal to an underserved audience — Latinos. Hispanics comprised 32 percent of the movie's audience its opening weekend, according to the studio.

Universal, which was the first studio to have an executive dedicated exclusively to Latino audiences, courted that same group with “Mama,” a horror hit that opened to $32 million this January. Produced by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro and directed by Spain's Andres Muschietti, "Mama" owed almost half of its opening-weekend sales to Hispanic moviegoers.

To help reach that audience, the studio recruited Del Toro to narrate a Spanish-language featurette and attend press junkets for Spanish-language media outlets. It also debuted a trailer with Spanish graphics on Univision’s website the day before its official release.

“I think 'Mama' is the 21st-century benchmark case study of how to make and market a film that is for, and by, Hispanics but was always meant to attract a broad worldwide audience,” Fabian Castro, vice president of multicultural marketing at Universal, told thecredits.org in March.

Fogelson and distribution chief Nikki Rocco have also adopted a more experimental release strategy, seeking to capitalize on what are typically considered off months.

identity thiefHistorically, R-rated comedies do best when they open during the summer. But to avoid "The Hangover Part III," and "The Heat," the studio released “Identity Thief, a comedy starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, in the movie doldrums of February, when it opened to a healthy $35 million and dropped only 20 percent the next weekend, thanks to a lack of competition.

Some of those efforts, like releasing “Tower Heist” on VOD the same day as it debuted in theaters, failed. Yet the majority worked. The studio opened "Pitch Perfect" in a limited number of theaters last September before spreading it wide. Positive word of mouth propelled the teen musical comedy to $65 million in grosses domestically and $113 million worldwide. It also opened "Fast Five" in late April in 2011, believing it could extend the summer into April. It opened to $86 million.

This year, it pulled a similar trick with "Oblivion," a sci-fi film with aging action star Tom Cruise. It opened to $37 million in April and held strong in its second weekend before it was swallowed by the summer’s first true blockbuster -- “Iron Man 3.” It also racked up almost $200 million overseas.

the purge scary masks horrorWhen TheWrap asked an executive at a rival studio what was behind Universal’s success, he said:  “Their marketing has gone from good to great. If you look at movies like ‘The Purge,’ the tone was great, the outdoors were great and they couldn’t sell the star so they sold the concept.”

Brad Fuller, who produced “The Purge” alongside Blum, said Universal allowed Blum to oversee development and production with minimal notes, and built online buzz in a strategy overseen by Doug Neil.

“Although the TV campaign was a confident campaign, the part of it that felt innovative was the internet presence they created,” Fuller told TheWrap. “They created chatter about the movie with tweets and on Facebook, and that seemed to fuel the success of that movie.”

A few flops may loom on the horizon -- its next release, "R.I.P.D," is tracking poorly, and costs on one of its major winter releases, "47 Ronin," spiraled out of control. Yet at the premiere of “Despicable Me 2,” the change at the studio was visible on Fogelson’s face – a newfound, contented smile.

On Monday the Guardian published video of hip hop star and actor Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) being force fed according to the standard operating procedure (SOP) used by the U.S. military at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility.

Currently about involve 104 of the 166 detainees at Gitmo are on hunger strike in protest of indefinite detention and treatment conditions, so they are being being force fed (44 undergoe the procedure against their will).

The video notes that the full procedure, which typically takes about two hours to complete, is carried out twice a day.

After about three minutes, as doctors prepare to insert the tube a second time, an off camera voice calls for the doctors to end the simulation because of Bey's cries.

“It is perfectly clear . . . that forced-feeding is a painful, humiliating and degrading process,” Senior U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler said on Monday in a ruling stating that she lacked the legal jurisdiction to stop the force-feeding program challenged by four detainees.

Here's the video, produced by UK-based human rights group Reprieve and director Asif Kapadia (WARNING: Disturbing content):

pink singer concertA 16-year-old Pink fan is feeling very "missundaztood," as the pop singer's second studio album was titled, after accidentally creating a bomb scare at an Australian arena on Sunday.

Before the concert, the unidentified teenager tweeted, "@Pink I'm ready with my Bomb. Time to blow up #RodLaverArena. B----."

His sister told The Herald Sun that the tweet, since removed, was a reference to Pink's song "Timebomb," off the latest album, "The Truth About Love," and written in response to the concert's one-hour delay.

"It was freezing cold, and he didn’t mean it like that," she said of her "grade A student" brother. "He wrote it as in one of her songs is called 'Timebomb' and he forgot to put the 'Time' on there."

Security at the Melbourne venue recognized the teenager from his Twitter profile picture within 10 minutes of entering. They arrested him and he is now facing criminal charges, including public nuisance, his father told The Herald Sun.

The concert stop is one of 18 shows Pink will perform at the 15,000-capacity Rod Laver Arena during the "Truth About Love" tour.

The record-busting Australian tour is expected to sell 500,000 tickets, Billboard reported.

The web series "Drunk History" makes the leap to television on Tuesday, premiering on Comedy Central at 10 p.m.

Here's the show in a nutshell, as explained in the disclaimer:

"All the stories depicted in the following program are based on real events."

Fade to black.

"It should be noted, however, that every storyteller you're about to see is completely drunk."

Queue inebriated comedians recounting famous events in history, and celebrities — including Jack Black, Bob Odenkirk, Adam Scott, Dave Grohl, Will Forte, and Jack McBrayer — soberly reenacting those scenes.

Every slur, burp, and cognitive detour is acted out in character.

Like, remember at the height of the Watergate scandal when investigative journalist Bob Woodward puked at the feet of informant Deep Throat? No? Comedian Fred Willard does.

Here's a preview from the first episode, showing a blackout version of the famous meeting between President Nixon (Odenkirk of "Breaking Bad") and Elvis Presley (Black).

Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner co-created the series in 2007, and it quickly exploded after the first installment — depicting the dual between presidential candidates Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton — went viral on YouTube.

Watch the first video:

"Drunk History" found a home on Funny Or Die shortly after, and Waters and Konner produced seven more volumes.

Comedy Central has picked up the series for eight episodes. Each one will center on a single U.S. city., the first being Washington, D.C.

Here are a couple more pieces of evidence to suggest the full-blown show will be a staggering success:
