'Man Of Steel' Borrows Elements From 5 Other Big Movies

superman man of steel

Warning: If you haven't seen the film, there are some spoilers.

As "Man of Steel" rolls into theaters this weekend you may find yourself experiencing some serious déjà vu.

I enjoyed director Zack Snyder's take on the son of Krypton during a Tuesday screening; however, when the movie begins to get to the big action sequences at the end, you can't help but feel you've seen some of this before.

Between black holes, snake-like probes, and a familiar scene of an apocalypse, here are a few films "Man of Steel" appears to borrow a page from:

1. "Independence Day"

This is the movie you'll most likely find similarities with.

Here's the set up: A giant alien ship takes position over one of Earth's major cities (Chicago). American jet fighters head toward the giant vehicle in hopes to destroy it. The scene feels so familiar we're almost expecting Will Smith to appear in a cameo.

Here's a shot from "Man of Steel":

Here's a scene from "Independence Day":

We're not the only ones who noticed this.

NY Daily News:

"The alien invasion-heavy result is like “Independence Day” in a cape, though at least its hero doesn’t get Green Lantern-ized."

2. "War of the Worlds

For some reason there are giant tentacles attacking Superman throughout the final fight scenes of the film.

They look a lot like those alien probes Tom Cruise was battling in New Jersey.

3. "The Avengers"

"Man of Steel" follows the recent superhero cliché of sacrificing yourself for the good of mankind.

Again, we have aliens placing themselves at the center of a big city. There's even a black hole for the villains to get sucked into.

From "The Avengers":

4. "Inception"

There's a scene in "Man of Steel" where buildings are crumbling left and right and you can't help but feel like you're in one of Christopher Nolan's collapsing dream worlds from "Inception."

By the way, Nolan did co-write the script for "Man of Steel."

"Man of Steel":

"Inception":

5. "Terminator 2"

There's an odd action sequence between Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) and General Zod (Michael Shannon) taking place in Superman's head where he envisions an apocalyptic ending to Earth.

It plays out sort of like that ubiquitous vision Sarah Connor sees about the world coming to a fiery end.

man of steel terminator

Bonus: "District 9"

district 9"Man of Steel" is a film about an alien on Earth coming to grips with his differences and gaining acceptance from those around him.

On many levels, this is a loose plotline for Neil Blomkamp's brilliant 2009 film which shows a man who slowly changes into an alien. He's not harmful or a different person, but because of his outward appearance he's treated like a dangerous monster.

Of course, the aliens don't have heat vision and can't fly.

Had Superman looked like something out of "District 9" hidden in a human suit would the people of Earth have been as welcoming?

Let us know if you notice any other similarities while seeing the film.

JOB OF THE WEEK: Finance Director

Steven Spielberg's Nightmare Scenario For Hollywood Is Already Coming True

brad pitt world war z

Earlier this week, Steven Spielberg said the movie industry was about to implode.

Specifically, while speaking at USC Spielberg noted that since so many movie studios are opting to bet on one large $250-million-budget film rather than a few smaller films, this will eventually result in a giant meltdown for Hollywood.

George Lucas followed up predicting that going to the movies will be a Broadway event costing anywhere from $50 to $150 dollars some day.

It looks like they're right.

Paramount announced it will sell $50 tickets for people to view showings of Brad Pitt's zombie thriller "World War Z" on June 19 — two days before the film's release.

Remember, this is the movie that was receiving a lot of bad press after a Vanity Fair cover article revealed the film's budget inflated to around $200 million and a costly 40-minute reshoot of the end had to take place.

Paramount is pairing up with Regal Entertainment Group to bring the costly package to consumers.

Not everyone will be able to get in on the deal.

These "mega tickets," as Paramount is coining them, will be available in five markets — Houston, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and San Diego.

What does $50 get you?

Here's what's inside the "mega-ticket" package:

  • One ticket
  • One HD digital copy of the movie when it comes out
  • One pair of "World War Z" Custom 3D glasses
  • A limited-edition movie poster and a small popcorn

Paramount says all of this amounts to $75 worth of paraphernalia.

star trek into darkness posterWhen we went to an early showing of "Star Trek Into Darkness" we paid $18.50 for a single ticket (in New Jersey) and received 3D glasses and a sweet glow-in-the-dark poster for free.

We had to give the 3D glasses back; however, other films in the past have given out free 3D glasses along with tickets. "The Avengers" and "Harry Potter" come to mind.

Typically, an HD copy of a film goes for about $40 on release.

That's about $60.

A small popcorn costs a lot these days (close to $6 in some theaters), but there's no way it costs $15. The least Paramount could have done was throw in a soda, too.

Paramount knows it needs "World War Z" to do immensely well at theaters to not only earn back its outstanding budget, but to also make a profit

Selling pricey tickets would help a little.

At the end of the day, if you shell out $50 for one of these WWZ tickets, you're basically getting bragging rights to see a film that isn't even the most-anticipated of the year before anyone else and an HD movie.

"this is the end" rihanna

An all-star cast of comedians parody their celebrity status as they try to survive the apocalypse in Sony Pictures' "This is the End" now playing in theaters.

It's always a highlight when celebrities are willing to poke fun at their own persona, so...

Jean Claude Van Damme in 'JCVD'

Jean Claude Van Damme's career had fallen practically to obscurity by 2008. But the '90s action star took advantage of his C-list status, starring as a forgotten action star struggling with his taxes and a custody battle with his ex-wife in "JCVD." Poor guy even loses roles to Steven Seagal.

Steve Carell in 'Knocked Up'

The Hollywood nice guy is berated by pregnant and moody E! producer Allison Scott (Katherine Heigl) in "Knocked Up." He tries to gracefully exit the hostile interview, but has a hard time escaping the wrath of Heigl's character.

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon in 'The Trip'

Coogan and Brydon have played themselves in a number of films, most memorably in their 2010 comedy "The Trip." They travel around Northern England tasting food, wine, and working out their impressions of Michael Caine and Al Pacino. The duo will be making their way to Italy in the upcoming sequel.

7 Celebrity Dads Who Are Surprisingly Good Financial Role Models

$

Katy Perry Mick Jagger

People don’t often associate celebrity fathers with frugality, but there are a few out there who choose to make saving money a lifestyle, no matter how much they earn.

There are some celebrity fathers, in fact, who serve as amazing financial role models for their kids. They could also teach you a thing or two about saving money as you prepare to buy your own dad something special for Father’s Day.

Here is a list of some of the leading celebrity dads who not only serve as financial role models to their children, but can also help you learn to save as well.

#1 Mick Jagger

Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger is not just known for being the king of rock, he’s also known as the king of frugality. This father of seven has reportedly made his ex-wife, model Jerry Hall, “pay for everything to do with the house and the children,” she shared in an interview.

While he’s known for being generous when it comes to buying gifts and presents, he likes to live an overall frugal lifestyle. He even taught his children to repair vehicles before having them junked.

#2 Paul McCartney

Fellow musician, Sir James Paul McCartney, of Beatles fame, takes pride in being a father of five. But this doesn’t mean he likes spending money on them if it means giving up his frugality.

Though McCartney is said to be worth $1 billion, he reportedly sent four of his children to local state schools instead of costlier, private schools. He also is said to have made guests at his ex-wife’s birthday party pay for their drinks.

His style of frugality may not be for everyone, but there’s no doubt that his kids know just what it takes to save and grow their money.

#3 David Grohl

Dave Grohl is known for being a member of not one, but two legendary rock groups: Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. However, did you know that this father of two is also know for being a bit of a penny pincher?

As a typical suburban dad, Grohl acknowledged in a 2003 interview that while he has tons of money, he’s “afraid to spend it."

Some of his apprehension comes from choices made early in his life. “Knowing I don’t even have a high school diploma to fall back on, I’m going to be really careful with what I’ve got."

At least his thrifty decisions will likely help build a solid savings fund for him and his family in the long term.

The 8 Best Lines From Kanye West's New Album 'Yeezus'

$

kanye westKanye West's highly anticipated sixth studio album, Yeezus, has leaked.

We've picked out our favorite lyrics so far.

The intro from track, "I am a God":

I am a god
Hurry up with my damn massage
Hurry up with my damn ménage
Get the Porsche out the damn garage
I am a god

From the same song, West compares himself to the late Michael Jackson:

The only rapper who could compare to Michael

He continues:

I am a god
So hurry up with my damn massage
And a French ass restaurant
Hurry up with my damn croissants

Next, from song "Hold My Liquor" West raps,

B---- I'm back out my coma
Waking up on your sofa
When I park my Range Rover
Slightly scratch your Corolla
Okay I smashed your Corolla
I'm hanging on a hangover

In the same song he goes so far as to compare himself to self-help guru, Deepak Chopra:

Five years we been over
Ask me why I came over
One more hit and I can own yah
One more f--- and I can own yah
One cold night in October
Pu--- had me floatin'
Feel like Deepak Chopra
Pu--- had me dead
Might call 2Pac over
Yeezy's all on you sofa

Next, track, "I'm In It," West says,

Neck, ears, hands, legs, eatin' a--
Your pu---'s too good, I need to crash
Your ti-----, let 'em out, free at last
Thank God almighty, they free at last

In the same bar, West gets even more sexual and raps,

Had to stop at 7-Eleven like I needed gas
I'm lyin', I needed condoms, don't look through the glass
Chasin' love, lot of bittersweet hours lost
Eatin' Asian pu---, all I need is sweet and sour sauce
Tell your boss you need an extra hour off
Get you super wet after we turn the shower off

In "Blood On The Leaves", West remembers a time when he first hung out with a girl and got her to try drugs with him:

You could've been somebody
'Stead you had to tell somebody
Let's take it back to the first party
When you tried your first molly
It came out of your body
It came out of your body
Running naked down the lobby
And you was screamin' that you love me
Before the limelight tore yah

Inspired by those stylish glasses wearers, designer Frederico Mauro created a series of pictures of famous frames worn by actors, musicians, directors, and activists.

We turned a few of our favorites into a quiz (you can see the rest at Mauro's website).

How many frames do you recognize?

Let's start easy: Which young (fictional) wizard was famous for these glasses?

Why, it's Harry Potter (played by Daniel Radcliffe)!

Which legendary actress hid behind these frames in her famous movie as an "American geisha"?

Richard Linklater Drops Details On His 'Dazed And Confused' Sequel Set In The '80s

Dazed And Confused Sequel

Richard Linklater‘s next movie, Before Midnight, looks like it’s going to be so good, it might literally blind audience members with its awesomeness.

Despite this, there is perhaps one movie on Linklater’s upcoming list which is even more eagerly awaited, his Dazed And Confused Follow-Up.

In a recent interview on The Q&A With Jeff Goldsmith podcast, Linklater revealed his vision for the ‘spiritual successor’ to his 1993 coming-of-age cult comedy hit:

I think after doing [‘Before Midnight’] which was pretty intimate and my film before [‘Bernie’] was pretty intimate too, I kinda want to take on an ensemble again. So I have a college comedy I’ve been working on for years that’s sort of a spiritual sequel to ‘Dazed [And Confused]’. It’s set on the first weekend of college with a bunch of people when you move into where you’re going to be living and you meet all these people.

The rumors of a Dazed and Confused sequel have been circulating for sometime. Back in 2010 it was semi-officially titled That’s What I’m Talking About and would have seen Matthew McConaughey reprise his role as Wooderson. It seemed McConaughey was game, and by 2012 it looked like Linklater had secured funding. Unfortunately something seems to have gone awry since then. He told Jeff Goldsmith that due to a lack of “big name casts” financing had dried up. Despite his critical success, Linklater explained his name still “doesn’t get you much” in Hollywood. Last we heard, Linklater expected to deliver the follow up movie in 2014. Have those plans now been scuppered?

Linklater also suggested he had quite a few working titles, suggesting the previous title of That’s What I’m Talking About has been ditched. He also gave a very slight mention of the sequels premise:

Yeah, it’s sequentially it’s like if Mitch went off to college, so sequentially it’s like ‘80. It’s all that partying you do before the first class, if you get 3 or 4 days, so it’s a long weekend of college.

What do you think? Is Dazed and Confused a film which really needs to be revisited, or is it best left alone?

The Unstoppable Rise Of Kanye West's Ego

kanye west lights

When Kanye West called himself the next Steve Jobson track to revolutionize "downtown, fashion, culture" and lead a company "worth billions of dollars"—  no one was surprised.

The musical superstar has earned a reputation for having the biggest ego in the world.

It's not entirely undeserved either.

His fiercely anticipated album "Yeezus" leaked a few days early and is already getting great reviews.

How did we get to this point?

Kanye Omari West was born in Atlanta, Georgia on June 8, 1977. His parents — Ray, an award-winning photographer and church counselor, and Donda, an English professor — divorced when he was three.

Donda raised Kanye on Chicago's South Side. She said her greatest parenting challenge was learning how to discipline him without killing his spirit.

"My parents required every one of us not just to do our best, but to be the best," Donda wrote in her memoir, "Raising Kanye: Life Lessons from the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar." "If you don't set that bar high, you can't expect your children to excel."

Growing up, he spent summers with his father. "He taught me how to think, how to use my mind," Kanye said. "A lot of parents say, 'Because I said so.' But he allowed me to ask questions."

The quote comes from this Teen Diaries TV clip.

28 Musicians Who Turned Down Hit Songs

$
0
0

britney spears hit me baby one more time music videoThe old saying about one person's trash being another person's treasure is doubly true in the music world, as plenty of smash hit songs were once passed over by big-name artists.

But don't feel too sorry for the stars on this list: It's unlikely they spend a lot of time moping around about what might have been.

Britney Spears Turned Down 'Umbrella'...

When one Googles "Britney umbrella," some unfortunate paparazzi shots of a bald pop princess show up. But things could have been different. Terius "The Dream" Nash explained Rihanna's critical and commercial triumph "Umbrella" was written with Britney Spears in mind, but the demo never got to her (this was, of course, around the time of the head-shaving incident).

... and Lady Gaga hit 'Telephone'

The anti-clingy boyfriend anthem "Telephone" was originally written for Britney Spears. Though Spears recorded a heavily autotuned demo of the song, she eventually passed, paving the way for songwriter Lady Gaga's collaboration with Beyonce Knowles. Gaga has since admitted, "I hate ‘Telephone’. Is that terrible to say? It’s the song I have the most difficult time listening to."

Rihanna Passed on 'We Can't Stop'

Mike Will Made It penned Miley Cyrus' single "We Can't Stop" with another pop princess in mind: Rihanna. But Rihanna ended up recording "Pour It Up" instead, so Miley took the song and made it her own. No word on whether the drug references ("lines in the bathroom," "dancing with Molly") were in the original lyrics.

'Man Of Steel' Is Going To Have One Of The Biggest Box-Office Weekends Of The Year

$
0
0

superman man of steel henry cavill

Harsh reviews of a darker Superman reboot aren't hurting "Man of Steel" at all.

The film currently sits at an unimpressive 57% on film review site Rotten Tomatoes, but it's soaring at theaters.

Friday midnight showings of the Zack Snyder directed film accounted for $9 million in ticket salesAnother $12 million from 7 p.m. Thursday evening screenings through advanced Wal-Mart ticket sales brought in a total haul of $21 million.

Projections already have the film earning up to $45 million Friday night leading to box-office totals of more than $100 million.

Fandango tells us "Man of Steel" represented 85% of its online ticket sales Friday.

The film is doing so well at the box office that it may break the current opening weekend record for June and will go on to be one of the highest-opening weekends of the year.

Currently, "Toy Story 3" holds the June record with $110.3 million. Current estimates for "Man of Steel" see it earning as much as — or even more than — $120 million this weekend which would be a huge number — not only for a reboot, but also for a first film in a franchise and a film this year where the box office was particularly sluggish prior to the May onslaught of blockbusters.

Right now, only two films — "Iron Man 3" and "Fast & Furious 6" have earned more than $100 million dollars opening weekend this year.

Note: The movie is NOT bad by a long shot.

For all the critics complaining over the fact the film is dark (it's really not much of a gloom and doom fest), that appears to be one of the main draws sending people to see the reboot.

According to a Fandango survey of 1,000 people who purchased tickets to see the film, the following factors are playing a role in people's decision to see "Man of Steel":

* 88% are fans of Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” franchise

* 81% are looking forward to seeing a darker interpretation of Superman

* 61% plan to see it on the big screen more than once, indicating heavy repeat viewing in weeks to come.

The most impressive stat is that a lot of people may want to see this movie more than once — something that was common with Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy.

"The Dark Knight Rises" went on to earn an impressive $161 million opening weekend and this was with no 3D screenings and after a drop in box-office sales following the Colorado theater shooting at a midnight screening.

Don't expect it to be "TDKR" or "Iron Man 3" huge though.

Remember, those films were the third in their respective franchises. As well, "Iron Man 3" was also seen as a sequel to 2012's highest-grossing movie, "The Avengers." (Though it appears the high tracking numbers of "Man of Steel" may be seen as the result of the film being likened to "TDKR" sequel.)

Fandango's Dave Karger shares with Business Insider that opening Father's Day weekend is another draw for the film as well.

"It will be hard for Superman to beat ‘Iron Man 3’ but the timing is perfectly positioned between Father’s Day and July 4," says Karger. "The father-son story is particularly touching – and the film should play well throughout July, especially in the heartland."

Here are the numbers to beat for the weekend:

Highest Opening Weekends of 2013

MovieOpening Weekend Earnings
1. "Iron Man 3" $174.1 million
2. "Fast & Furious 6" $120 million*
3. "Oz the Great and Powerful"      $79.1 million
 4. "Star Trek Into Darkness"$70.1 million
5. "The Great Gatsby"  $50.1 million

*This was the four day MDW total. "F&F 6" earned $97 million in the three-day weekend.

Overall, here are the highest-grossing opening weekends:

MovieOpening Weekend Earnings
1. "The Avengers"$207 million
2. "Iron Man 3"$174.1 million
 3. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" $169.2 million
 4. "The Dark Knight Rises" $160.1 million
 5. "The Dark Knight"$158.4 million

5 Bands You Should Be Listening To This Weekend

$

surfer blood filter

With so much great music constantly coming out week after week, it’s a little difficult to keep up with everything out there.

Lucky for you, we at FILTER love listening to everything and have compiled a list of bands we think you should be listening to right now!

Below, we have provided a list of five artists that have been taking our ears on the best summer vacation they could have possibly asked for. Tune in for a wild ride of our current favorite jams. There’s some top-notch electronic, indie pop, rock, blues — yep, it’s all in there and just waiting for you to give it a listen.

1. Boards of Canada

Churning out ambient electronic hits since the mid-'90s, electronic duo of Scottish brothers, Boards of Canada, currently has quite an impressive amount of EPs and studio albums under their belt. BoC's signature cinematic downtempo is the perfect soundtrack for moonlit drives. Or walks around your neighborhood that you think you've already explored completely, but no—Boards of Canada will put you into an eye-opening trance where you're bound to discover something fresh about the familiar. And it will be incredible. To enter the trance, play BoC's new record, "Tomorrow's Harvest." It's been eight years since the brothers' last full-length studio album, "The Campfire Headphase," but the wait has been worth it. "Tomorrow's Harvest" is an hour-long listen, but there's no telling how long the trance will last this time.

2. Camera Obscura
Along with fellow Glasgow indie darlings, Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura have concocted the most delectable blend of pop over the years; the type that is sentimental though never so saccharine that you'll have to see a dentist. If anything, Camera Obscura will cause your heart to weigh a bit more than it did previously and make your eyes well up with tears—because as sweet as Tracyanne Campbell's voice appears to be, there's a bite to her lyrics. No matter how awful you think your memory is, distant events will hurt like they did the instant they happened, upon listening to Camera Obscura. But when has that ever stopped anyone from being a fan? To borrow a new phrase from the Scottish group, let's "Do It Again" by listening to "Desire Lines."

the dig filter3. The Dig

Though New York indie rockers, The Dig, released two excellent LPs relatively recently—one in 2010 and the other in 2012—it's their shorter release which came out this month, "Tired Hearts EP," that we're addicted to these days.

"Tired Hearts" is solid all the way through, each of its five tracks a total winner.

The album title is definitely deceptive because there is nothing lackluster or washed-out about The Dig here. This is the band at their most catchy and confident, as they hit you with the hard truth: "how can you trust a feeling when the future isn't clear?" Just shrug it off and keep grooving.

surfer blood filter4. Surfer Blood

With such a consistently awesome debut effort in 2010, we've been itching for more from Florida's finest indie rockers, Surfer Blood. This dream has now become a reality, in the form of a 12-track follow-up called "Pythons."

Like the preceding LP, "Astro Coast," "Pythons" is an album that begs to be heard in a live setting for the ultimate raw experience.

Until then, put on a pair of headphones or blast "Pythons" in the car, to let the pounding indie surf rock extravaganza commence, starting with the sinfully good showstopper, “Demon Dance.”

5. Hanni El Khatib

It's no surprise that garage/blues rocker, Hanni El Khatib—featured in the latest issue of FILTER—made it onto this week’s list.

Actually, he's been on repeat since April 30: the date he dropped his second full-length album, "Head in the Dirt," produced by The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach.

hanni el khatib filter

Pick up a copy of "Head in the Dirt" today, to hear some innovative, lo-fi blues by this treasured LA singer/songwriter. Though he sings quite fondly of "a perfect little penny," Hanni's quality tunes are of much greater value. A Sacagawea, at least.

Here's how big of a hit "Man of Steel" already is at theaters.

Warner Bros.' Superman reboot has earned more than the 2006 opening-weekend for "Superman Returns."

$56 million vs. $52.5 million.

Here's a better breakdown of that figure:

The film is now expected to reach $130 million opening weekend— leaps and bounds north of what the film was originally projected to earn.

If you're trying to see the film this weekend, we recommend buying your tickets online and getting to the theater pretty early.

But we can't imagine that the Fresh Prince is disappointed in his little prince.

The Smiths have appeared on screen together numerous times. Jaden acted alongside his famous dad in the "Men in Black" series and played his son in "The Pursuit of Happyness."

The Smiths aren't the first father and son couple to act on screen and they certainly won't be the last.

In celebration of Father's Day weekend, let's take a look at 15 more fathers who took their sons to the set.

And to all fathers out there, Happy Father's Day!

Celebrity Chef Nigella Lawson Was Reportedly Assaulted By Her Husband At A Restaurant

Nigella Lawson

Nigella Lawson was apparently assaulted by her husband Charles Saatchi during a row at a restaurant during which he grabbed her by the throat.

In photographs published in a Sunday newspaper, the television chef appears to have become embroiled in a violent dispute with the wealthy art dealer.

The couple were sitting outside Scott’s in Mayfair, central London, when he appeared to lean over and grab her by the throat.

Lawson, 53, looked terrified before leaving the restaurant alone in floods of tears.

A witness told the People: “It was utterly shocking to watch."

"I have no doubt she was scared. It was horrific, really. She was very tearful and was constantly dabbing her eyes. Nigella was very, very upset. She had a real look of fear on her face.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said no complaint was believed to have been made about the incident and that no investigation had been launched.

The row occurred shortly after the couple had finished eating at the seafood restaurant, a popular haunt for celebrities.

They were at their favourite table, which is outside because Saatchi smokes.

It is partly sheltered by olive trees but the alleged attack could be clearly seen and heard by other customers and those passing on the busy street, it was reported.

Onlookers claimed Lawson dabbed her eyes on a napkin as her husband tapped his cigarettes on the table.

She is then said to have downed her glass of red wine before beginning to speak in a trembling voice, placing a hand on his left wrist on the table.

At one point, she leaned over and kissed his cheek.

Saatchi then left, leaving his wife, who was wearing a spotty top, black jacket and trousers, sobbing at the table as he got into a waiting car.

A couple on an adjacent table reportedly turned around and gasped as they saw Lawson become distraught but nobody intervened, despite the apparent severity of the attack.

The witness added: “He looked guilty. It was clear he knew he'd done something wrong. He was menacing, there's no question. She had been abused and humiliated in public.

“No man should do that to a woman. She raised her voice and got angry but at the same time was trying to calm him down, almost like you would try to calm down a child. The kiss was a strange thing. He was being intimidating, threatening.

"And yet she kissed him. She appeared to be a woman who loves him but was clearly unable to stop him being abusive, frightening and disrespectful to her.”

Earlier in the day, last Sunday, Lawson had tweeted a picture of her scrambled egg and smoked salmon breakfast.

She has since tweeted several times about food but there has been no hint of trouble in her marriage.

She has previously admitted that she and Saatchi have fiery rows and has described her husband as "an exploder".

She said in 2007: "I'll go quiet when he explodes, and then I am a nest of horrible festeringness."

The couple, who have both been married before, are due to celebrate their 10th anniversary in September.

TV Correspondent Goes Insane After Getting Routine Injection, Locked In Asylum For Two Years

Malcolm BrabantMy friend Malcolm Brabant has gone to places none of us would like to go.

He has been possessed sitting on his veranda under a dark, Attic sky; he has heard voices in his head that have urged him to kill; he has been drunk with delirium, believing he was the chosen one, the Messiah come to save the world. He has grappled with inner demons, devilish thoughts that have made him believe he was Lucifer, too.

For almost two years, my friend Malcolm has slipped in and out of madness, dancing on the edge of an abyss most of us will never know. Spirits he calls guardian angels – friends and relatives who died prematurely – have sometimes accompanied him along the way. They have spoken to him in commandments, urging him to drink his urine or eat his excrement – or brush his teeth with a lavatory brush. And, like those satanic thoughts, they have inhabited his soul.

My friend Malcolm, a spirited man in his 50s, conquered by furies; an award-winning BBC foreign correspondent and storyteller par excellence who should never have been narrating this particular tale.

"There is a very fine dividing line between madness and sanity," he says. "I have slipped between the two very easily. It is extraordinary, really, how rapidly it can happen."

I had not heard his voice since he left Athens in October 2011. The departure had been "hasty", a shocking end to an illustrious career covering the killing fields that were the Balkans and the savagery of Chechnya before setting up in Miami and returning to Greece for a second stint in 2003.

For years, Malcolm's was the familiar face that we saw on our screens reporting from all those spots. Like so many BBC veterans polished in the school of pitch and pace, his voice remains confident and strong. But as he speaks from his new home in Copenhagen, it is imbued with something else. "The doctors say there is a good chance I will fully recover, but there is also a chance I could relapse, too." "Relapse", a word I would never have associated with bold, brave, get-on-and do-it Malcolm. "I'm still on drugs, antipsychotic medication, even if it has been much reduced."

It all began, Malcolm believes, with a pinprick – a yellow-fever jab administered for a trip to the Ivory Coast. Well before most, Malcolm had become a one-man band, self-taught in the art of making films, creating packages and doing lives. But his choice to be based in Athens also came with its challenges. In a country long perceived to be a non-news maker – before its dramatic economic collapse – editorial indifference meant life as a freelance was marked by periods of feast and famine. There was no fixed salary or paid holidays. Enterprising freelances survived by broadening their skills and rooting for stories elsewhere.

In the early spring of 2011, Malcolm was doing just that when he elected to go to the Ivory Coast on a non-BBC assignment to make a film for Unicef. The vaccine, a dose of Stamaril, administered at a municipal clinic in Athens, was part of his preparations for that trip. It was Friday 15 April 2011. Pressed for time, Malcolm stopped at the clinic while doing the school run with Trine, his Danish wife. "She asked: 'Shall I come in with you?' and I said, 'No.' It was routine. And there seemed nothing wrong with the clinic," he recalled.

Within hours, the symptoms erupted. Gripped by a raging fever, he turned lobster red, shivering so violently the headboard above the couple's bed shook uncontrollably. It took two weeks – after admission to hospital and a dose of steroids – before his temperature could be brought down.

Then came psychosis. A shooting star, glimpsed after supper from the balcony of their home, quickly convinced Malcolm that he had witnessed the Second Coming and, as such, had been invested with all the powers of a modern-day Messiah. Trine, by turns, suddenly found herself confronting a man she did not know. One minute he was Baby Jesus – demanding he be swaddled in a sheet – the next he was ranting incoherently or daubing crosses on the walls of their home with the juice of crushed strawberries.

Often, the couple's son, Lukas, would witness his father consumed by fury and despair. "He was an innocent 12-year-old boy who should never have seen such things," says Malcolm. "He is as much a victim as me."

Incarceration began in Athens with Malcolm spending his first three weeks in a psychiatric hospital on the outskirts of the capital. But there was worse to come. And when it did, it came in the form of Lucifer himself. Unable to keep up his job in Athens – following a bout of treatment in his native Ipswich – it was decided that the couple should retreat to Copenhagen.

"What happened in the Greek hospital was completely mild to what happened here," says Malcolm. "We left in a hurry, a real hurry, and in November, soon after we got here, I just collapsed. It was as if I had been stabbed in the lungs and all the air had been taken out of me. I was convinced I was the devil and that my actions would lead to both Trine and Lukas being killed."

There was no option but to be committed, this time to a psychiatric hospital on the outskirts of Copenhagen. "It was a locked-in ward known as 811. I spent seven days rocking back and forth saying I was the devil," he remembers. "I grew a long, spikey beard and just rocked and rocked."

Forced to endure the "guttural screams and shrieks of other patients" and not speaking a word of Danish, Malcolm thought he was experiencing hell on earth. For Trine, whose father had been incarcerated in the same ward before taking his own life 20 years earlier, it was hard beyond words.

Imagining himself, in his first bout of madness, to be the Messiah was one thing. "But to believe I was the instrument of the devil, to be consumed by such dark thoughts, was quite another."

Dogged by depression, his life in complete ruins, Malcolm underwent four sessions of electroconvulsive therapy which, initially at least, spurred the couple into thinking he was on the way to recovery. "On Christmas Eve I was allowed back home for three hours. Trine had cooked a wonderful meal, but as I was standing in the kitchen, carving the meat, a 10-inch blade in my hand, all I kept hearing were these voices saying 'kill', 'kill', 'kill', and they were incredibly loud. I was like a camera outside myself … my conscious and corporeal being were never going to give into them, but I was really very shocked."

Was he a schizophrenic or a potential psychopath? Both thoughts raced through his mind.

On New Year's Eve, utterly persuaded he would kill his wife and son, he placed a belt around his neck and tried to take his own life, instead. A nurse caught him, just in time.

In July last year, Malcolm was let out of the hospital. He has not been readmitted. But what he regards as a fluke of fate has destroyed his life. His job, his beloved Greece have both been lost. And, in being taken to places no one would want to go, he has been brought to the brink of penury.

The couple do not doubt that the yellow fever vaccine is to blame. "From when the fever first started, it was clear that Malcolm was having an adverse event," insists Trine, a journalist herself. "All the experts I have spoken to believe the batch was contaminated."

Steadfastly they have pursued the manufacturer, Sanofi Pasteur, for compensation. The company has vehemently denied any link, arguing that the batch of vaccine in question had "passed the numerous quality controls" and suggesting that perhaps Malcolm's breakdown was the result of being predisposed to mental illness.

Although the company admits that reports of side-effects have included mental disorders, it says there have been fewer than 10 such reports, including Malcolm's, after the distribution of more than 300 million doses of the vaccine worldwide.

Out of the darkness, scrambling for light, Malcolm has written eloquently, in his book, Malcolm is a Little Unwell, about his descent into madness. It was, as I have said, the story he was never meant to tell. But as a friend, I can only thank the gods that he is here to tell it.
