Rock Hudson's Wife Secretly Recorded His Gay Confession — Revealed 55 Years Later

Rock Hudson Phyllis Gates

After three years of marriage, Phyllis Gates confronted her famous actor-husband Rock Hudson in 1958 finally asking — after years of rumors and reports  if he was gay.

A candid conversation ensued and what Hudson didn't know at the time was that his wife had hired private eye Fred Otash to tape-record the conversation.

The Hollywood Reporter has obtained Otash's secret files and released a transcript of his brief, alleged gay confession.

Gates opened the conversation with her Hollywood legend husband asking, "You're great speed with me, sexually. Are you that fast with boys?"

Hudson responded by telling her "Well, it's a physical conjunction. Boys don't fit. So, this is why it lasts longer."

Phyllis pressed further: "Everyone knows that you were picking up boys off the street shortly after we were married and have continued to do so, thinking that being married would cover up for you."

But that was it, Hudson was back to insisting he was straight and faithful to his wife: "I have never picked up any boys on the street. I have never picked up any boys in a bar, never. I have never picked up any boys, other than to give them a ride."

Gates filed for divorce in 1958, citing "mental cruelty."

Hudson, who died of AIDS in 1985 at the age of 59, never came out publicly despite incessant rumors about his sexuality.

Author Sarah Davidson, who wrote the Oscar nominated star's authorized biography,  told the late Roger Ebert that while Hudson may have been secretive about his sexuality, he was "A very romantic man. He always believed there was one single right person for him, Mr. Right, and he was always looking for that person, and always finding him."

TV Nudity Is Increasingly Being Rated Acceptable For Kids

The Bachelor girls in bikinis

A new study from Parents Television Council (PTC) has revealed that shows like ABC's "The Bachelor" are blurring the lines of how much skin is acceptable to show on primetime broadcast TV.

Based on findings from a period between January 1 and April 26 of this year, the PTC concluded “that blurred or pixilated full nudity is increasingly being shown on primetime broadcast television shows, and that almost 70% of this type of nudity is being shown on TV-PG rated programs.”

The PTC concludes that NBC and ABC are the most guilty, with the two networks accounting “for 88% of the full nudity that aired on primetime broadcast television.”

And while it may not be a conscious move by the networks to show more skin on their shows, it's often something that happens slowly over time.

"We have documented in the past that there is a phenomenon called 'ratings creep,' what’s not acceptable to show on TV in previous years eventually becomes acceptable," explains the PTC in their report.

"This data exposes the huge flaw in the TV ratings system: that the TV networks rate their own content and are financially motivated not to give a TV show a higher rating, otherwise advertisers would likely flee," continues the report.

But PTC President Tim Winter has a solution: "The FCC needs to enforce the indecency law – period. And if it doesn’t, then Congress needs to ensure that this happens and that children are protected."

Russell Brand Reveals What Led To The Breakdown Of His Marriage To Katy Perry

Russell Brand esquire magazine cover

Russell Brand graces the cover of this month's Esquire with a headline about his "temptations."

And in a new interview with the magazine, he reveals there were, in fact, quite a few temptations during his 14-month marriage to singer Katy Perry.

"I tried it and I loved it," Brand says of his marriage that ended over a year ago. "I really think she's a lovely beautiful person. It's just hard isn't it? She's got a lot of options, I've got a lot of options, so you've got to really, really want it."

He added: "Some of it's the fame, but I think getting married is ... you've got a whole other person that you've got to make as important as you!"

"I've probably harmed other people, by being selfish," he admits. "And really, I'd like to be married. I'm just not transmitting that frequency of 'Soulmate! Soulmate!' I'm transmitting the frequency of "Mmm!"

But Brand does feel like stand-up comedy is his soulmate of sorts.

"Stand-up is not a frivolous thing. It's not a dangling appendage of my celebrity. It's my absolute core," he explains. "Really the only thing that actually makes me raw is stand-up. When I'm doing it, it's beautiful."

Scarlett Johansson Sues Over Bizarre French Book That Depicts Her Doppelganger

Scarlett Johansson is suing a French publisher over the use of her likeness in a book.

According to French radio RTL, Johansson filed a lawsuit against JC Lattes for exploiting her likeness in "The First Thing We Look At."

The French novel depicts a woman falling in love with a garage-owner who believes she is "The Avengers" actress.

Later in the book it's revealed she is not in fact Johansson, but rather a doppelganger named Jeanine Foucaprez.

Delacourt denied to RTL the book was opportunistic.

"It’s a bit silly to say that if you talk about a person, the courts have to get involved. That’s quite sad."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, author Gregoire Delacourt defended his book to the French paper Le Figaro saying his character is not Johansson.

"This corresponds with the fantasies of our times," said Delacourt. "But I wrote a book of fiction. My character is not Scarlett Johansson, it is Jeanine Foucaprez!"

Delacourt continued to say Johansson is not the only celebrity who is referenced in the book.

Two other characters share likenesses with Ryan Gosling and Gene Hackman.

THR reports Johansson is seeking compensation and damages for the "breach and fradulent use of personal rights" and a ban on "future transfer of rights and adaptations of the book."

A Low-Budget Horror Film Is Going To Tear Apart 'The Internship' At The Box Office This Weekend

the purge

The movie people are dying to see this weekend isn't the Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson Google comedy "The Internship."

Instead, people are heading out in droves to see low-budget horror film "The Purge."

The Universal film has already earned more than its $3 million budget in late night showings. Thursday evening, the movie took in $3.4 million at theaters.

"The Purge" follows a 12-hour period where crime is legalized once a year. Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey star as a family held hostage for the duration.

Fandango told us the film was 54% of its ticket sales yesterday both online and in mobile. As of late last night, the film is their number one horror film of the year when it comes to presale tickets — bigger than those of April's "Evil Dead" reboot and January's "Mama."

"Evil Dead" earned $25.8 million opening weekend while Guillermo del Toro's "Mama" brought in $28.4 million.

According to Fandango, most people are heading out to see the movie because the premise of a horror film is refreshing in theaters crowded with superheroes and sci-fi "after earth" tales.

A Fandango survey that polled more than 1,000 "Purge" ticket buyers shows 94% of moviegoers bought a ticket because of "the film's unusual premise."

"'The Purge' definitely struck a nerve with moviegoers, with social media buzz that's been off the charts," says Fandango President Paul Yanover.

the purge posterThe film has been engaging potential moviegoers by asking them what they would do during "the purge" in a series of photos. The hashtag #SurviveTheNight has been used to gain traction on Facebook and Twitter and it's working.

The film has nearly 500,000 people talking about the film on Facebook.

However, one of the key factors that probably has moviegoers excited is that it's from Jason Blum, the producer of low-budget Hollywood success "Paranormal Activity."

That film cost an estimated $15,000 to produce. It earned $193 million worldwide and has led to a successful horror franchise.

It also helps that master-of-explosions Michael Bay ("Transformers") is also a producer on the film.

And "The Internship"?

We're told the film accounted for 7% of all sales on Fandango yesterday.

The film is receiving terrible reviews.

The Google comedy is currently sitting as the fourth-most anticipated movie of the weekend on the movie-ticket selling site behind "Now You See Me" and "Fast & Furious 6," but ahead of Will Smith's "After Earth."

Boxoffice.com predicts "The Purge" will earn $21 million opening weekend while projections for "The Internship" are currently at a generous $15.6 million.

Watch the trailer for "The Purge" below:

A Lot Of People Are Freaking Out Because They Think Microsoft's New Xbox Is Going To Spy On Them (MSFT)

xbox redesigned kinect

Microsoft's new gaming console, the Xbox One, will come with a motion sensor/camera accessory called the Kinect that will be used for video chats and controlling games with your body.

But the device will always be on by default, and that has a lot of people concerned, especially after yesterday's report that Microsoft and other big tech companies are working with the NSA and providing user data to the government through the scary-sounding PRISM program. (Microsoft denies that it's involved with PRISM.)

It's causing a lot of people to freak out, fearing that the Kinect will be able to spy on them in their own living rooms.

The reason the Kinect is always on is because it also has a nifty voice control feature that lets you turn on the Xbox One console by saying, "Xbox on." That's pretty much it. The camera isn't designed to spy on you, record conversations you have with your girlfriend in your living room, or do anything else nefarious.

And if you're still paranoid, you can take Microsoft's suggestion and turn the Kinect off or "pause" it whenever you want. That's it.

How Matthew McConaughey's 'Mud' Became A Breakout Indie Hit

$

mud matthew mcconaughey 2

The breakout box-office success of the Matthew McConaughey movie “Mud” has surprised everyone — except independent film company Roadside Attractions, which has been nothing if not systematic in its marketing and release.

The Mississippi River-set coming-of-age drama has made nearly $17 million since opening back on April 26 and is easily the highest-grossing movie in the seven-year history of the company. All the more impressively, it's never played in more than 960 theaters.

"It's been an amazing ride," said Howard Cohen, co-president of with Eric D’Arbeloff at Roadside, which with Lionsgate Entertainment acquired and is distributing Mud."

That ride isn't over yet. The PG-13-rated "Mud" broke into the top 10 in its second week and remains there, five weeks later. And Roadside’s box-office grosses for 2013 are already up to $19.8 million -- better than 2012’s total of $19.4 million.

What's more, with four movies still to come this summer, starting Friday with Joss Whedon's modern-day Shakespeare adaptation "Much Ado About Nothing," and three more due in in the fall, Roadside looks like a lock to top its best year ever. That was 2011 when “Conspirator,” "Margin Call," “Biutiful” and Oscar Best Picture nominee “Winter’s Bone” helped them take in roughly $28 million.

“Mud” was written and directed by Jeff Nichols ("Take Shelter"), and co-stars Reese Witherspoon, Sam Shepherd and Nichols regular Michael Shannon. It was financed by Everest Entertainment and produced by Everest and FilmNation Entertainment for about $12 million, and competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes last year, which is where Roadside picked it up.

mud matthew mcconaughey 3It follows two teenage boys (Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland) who encounter a fugitive (McConaughey) and form a pact to help him evade a bounty hunter and reunite with his true love (Witherspoon).

“Mud” quickly caught the eye of Roadside and Lionsgate executives at Cannes.

“We’ve focused primarily on intelligent, upscale movies with significant casts that have commercial elements, not pure art films, and ‘Mud’ certainly fit that profile,” said Howard Cohen, co-president with Eric D’Arbeloff at Roadside.

Once the deal closed in July, the next questions were the timing of the U.S. release and how to market the film.

“At the time, there was a lot of Matthew out there,” Cohen said. A revived McConaughey was on screen throughout 2012 in “Bernie,” “Killer Joe” and "Magic Mike.” So the decision was made to go with a spring 2013 release, which allowed Roadside and Lionsgate to take the film to the Sundance and South by Southwest film festivals.

“It was very well received and reviewed at both,’ Cohen said, “and that gave us a lot of buzz ahead of the opening.” "Mud" rolled out on 363 screens in late April -- more than a month after Focus Features debuted "Place Beyond the Pines," an arthouse-thriller which targeted a similar audience and had Ryan Gosling in the title role.

When it came to the marketing, Cohen said that they pursued a more commercial, rather than arthouse, strategy.

“The trailer (at end of story) pushes the genre elements -- the thriller aspect, the gunplay -- while at the same time emphasizing the reviews, and mentioning Cannes. It presents the film not as a standard thriller and not as pure arthouse either, and that was because we wanted to go to a wider demographic,” Cohen said. “That’s how we went with the TV spots, too.”

mud reese witherspoon"Mud" has played to a primarily -- 60 percent -- female audience, despite its gritty story line, and very well in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

But set on the Mississippi River, it also has played very strongly in the South -- particularly so in Austin, where McConaughey and Nichols live, and throughout Texas. In terms of box office, the No. 2-grossing theater for the film (behind the Arclight Hollywood) is in Little Rock, Ark., where it was shot.

“It’s a Heartland story,” Cohen said, “and Matthew McConaughey is very popular in those regions, but mainly the film speaks for itself.”

Roadside doesn’t develop or produce movies; it buys the rights, does the marketing and puts them in theaters. It's a lean operation, with just 18 full-time employees, well below the numbers employed by other specialty labels.

It’s a formula that is working better than it ever has before, in part because it's found a groove with partner Lionsgate, which bought a 43 percent stake in 2007. The two companies have developed a reputation for being aggressive on the festival circuit, where Cohen and d'Arbeloff, along with Lionsgate's Jason Constantine, are familiar faces.

Last year, they left the Toronto International Film Festival with the rights to Stuart Blumberg’s “Thanks for Sharing,” Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s “Imogene,” Whedon’s “Much Ado About Nothing” and Sarah Polley’s family documentary, “Stories We Tell.”

The company doesn’t list its releases on Box Office Mojo or Exhibitor Relations’ slate of upcoming film, so you have to be paying particularly close attention — or check in on their clever and occasionally sardonic Twitter account — to know what’s coming.

First up is “Much Ado About Nothing” in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. No one is expecting superhero-sized grosses from this one, but anything “The Avengers” director is involved in is bound to draw attention, and a nationwide rollout is planned for June 21.

“Redemption,” a thriller starring Jason Statham, is set for June 28. Steven Knight (“Dirty Pretty Things”) wrote and directed the tale of a man on the run from a military court martial, who descends into London’s underworld, assumes another’s identity and becomes an avenging angel.

girl pic_{8bf15b0f 93cc e211 838a d4ae527c3b65}On July 19, the company will roll out the Kristin Wiig comedy “Girl Most Likely” on roughly 300 screens. Annette Bening, Matt Dillon and Darren Criss co-star in the film, which follows a failed New York playwright transitioning from Next Big Thing to Last Year’s News. That one’s probably the one with the most commercial appeal.

“In a World …,” in which Lake Bell makes her writing and directing debut, will close out Roadside’s summer on Aug. 9. In the comedy, Bell plays a voice coach who ventures into the competitive all-male race to land the voiceover gig for the trailer of a massive blockbuster trilogy. Rob Corddry and Nick Offerman co-star.

It’s a diverse slate, which will get even broader in the fall.

First there is the Gwyneth Paltrow-Mark Ruffalo sex-addiction comedy “Thanks for Sharing,” on Sept. 20. That’s followed by the Lionsgate production “Grace Unplugged,” starring Disney TV star AJ Michalka as a young Christian singer whose faith is put to the test when she gets her big break.

That one will debut on about 500 screens — about as big as Roadside ever goes with openings — on Oct. 4. And two weeks later, Roadside will debut its recent Cannes pickup, the Robert Redford shipwreck saga “All Is Lost,” which looks sure to draw awards attention.

All that adds up to a year that will be the company's best and could actually change the way Roadside does business.

"We may have to add a couple of people," Cohen said.

Ricin letter Obama BloombergA Texas actress has been arrested for allegedly sending ricin-laced letters to both President Obama and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, NBC News reports.

According to federal officials, two weeks ago Shannon Rogers Guess Richardson called the Federal Bureau of Investigation claiming her husband Army veteran Nathanial Richardson sent the letters.

Investigators are now saying she sent the letters.

The Associated Press reports FBI agents seen wearing hazardous material suits were going in and out of her New Boston, Texas home Wednesday outside of Dallas.

A look at her profile on movie database IMDB shows the actress goes by name Shannon Guess in Hollywood.

Richardson has played uncredited roles in "The Blind Side" and AMC's "The Walking Dead."

Nathaniel Richardson's attorney John Delk told AP his client is cooperating in the investigation.

"There are a lot of factors I'm aware of that indicate (Nathaniel Richardson) was set up in this deal by her," said Delk said.

He added that Richardson is reportedly pregnant and expecting the couple's first child in October.

Letters testing positive for ricin were sent to both Obama and Mayor Bloomberg back in May.

According to NBC New York, the letter sent to Bloomberg read as follows:

“You will have to kill me and my family before you get my guns. Anyone who wants to come to my house will get shot in the face. The right to bear arms is my constitutional God given right and I will exercise that right till the day I die.”

paul ieti

Only one day after a U.S. Army soldier uploaded a video of himself singing in Afghanistan, it's gone viral.

Private First Class Paul Ieti, from American Samoa, posted the video to his personal Facebook page Thursday of him singing the Rihanna song "Stay".

He's currently serving in Afghanistan with the 3rd Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Ga.

Laura Ferreiro of Yahoo Music writes:

The video is incredibly simple – it features the soldier wearing fatigues sitting on a table eating cereal before he launches into an emotional rendition of the tune from Rihanna's latest album, Unapologetic.

He starts out by saying, "Shout out to Rihanna. I love you."

At last check on Facebook alone, the video had more than 30,000 likes and 9,000 shares — probably because his cover is rather incredible. Not surprisingly, this isn't the only song from Ieti. He also has a YouTube page showcasing many other impressive covers he's done.

Shortly after he realized how popular his video had become, Ieti wrote on Facebook, "Wow, just wow ... I'm blown away ... thanks for the love world."

5 Bands You Should Be Listening To This Weekend

laura marling photo courtesy press here publicity

With so much great music constantly coming out week after week, it’s a little difficult to keep up with everything out there.

Lucky for you, we at FILTER love listening to everything and have compiled a list of bands we think you should be listening to right now!

May birthed some epic albums by a batch of our favorite artists, so for this installment, we’re featuring those recent albums that we’re still listening to on repeat.

Mikal Cronin

If there’s anyone that can make solid power pop music right now, it’s Mikal Cronin. Each one of his songs contains a catchy beat that will keep you dancing from start to finish.

While known for his collaborations with Ty Segall, Cronin proves that he can definitely stand on his own. He’s straightforward in his lyrics, but insightful in the way he delivers them, which is precisely what makes his signature power pop such an alluring listen.

Take some time to listen to “Change,” to see just how fun and relatable Mikal Cronin’s songs can be.

Vampire Weekend

Since they hit the scene back in 2008 with their self-titled debut album, Vampire Weekend has filled our ears with fresh, exciting sounds. Fortunately for fans, their latest album, "Modern Vampires of the City," is no different.

Vampire Weekend captivate listeners with a refreshing, lighthearted sound, resulting in what will surely be some of our favorite summer tracks. With their catchy melodies and experimental beats, Vampire Weekend creates and maintains their unique and infectious sound throughout the entire album.

Check out their track “Diane Young,” and see how you end up dancing like a madman (or madlady), as the song builds into an elating chaos towards the end.

portugal the man_2013_hayley youngPortugal. The Man

Sometimes it feels like Portugal. The Man’s experimentation with sound is overlooked and they aren’t given the credit they often deserve.

This Alaskan band has eight full-length albums under their belt and each one has their unique footprint on it. With their latest album, "Evil Friends," they have found a balance in experimentation and widespread pop appeal.

Each track feels like a sonic work of art, layered in a variety of appealing and diverse noises.

Listen to their track “Purple Yellow Red and Blue” to see just how easy it is to get lost in—while at the same time feeling very much emotionally connected to— every sound Portugal. The Man have expertly incorporated.

Laura Marling

At only 23, this folk singer/songwriter already has four wonderful albums out. Her latest, "Once I Was An Eagle," shows how Marling has matured as a songwriter and as a person.

Each one of her songs expresses her insight on what it is like to love, and the humanity that can’t be separated from that feeling. Her songs are soft-spoken, intimate stories, drawing the listener in like a conversation between friends.

Yet there are layers to her words and verses which balance out the sole sound of her guitar. It is a beautiful type of listen and one that can be appreciated best when sitting down in a quiet room.

To get a sense of Marling’s sound, you can listen to “Take The Night Off” and escape into her soulful voice and calming melody.

The National

One of our most anticipated albums this year was "Trouble Will Find Me," and The National did not disappoint. It is a subtle album initially, but after multiple listens, it’s impossible to forget.

the national band

What is often so great about The National is how incredibly human they are. While they delve into subjects that have been sung about time and time again, their simplistic, yet touching lyrics offer a fresh and understandable perspective. This isn’t the type of band you would listen to while coasting on the highway en route to the beach, since they are brooding in nature. However, they are sort of perfect for those warm, quiet nights when you just want a companion that understands.

See just what we’re talking about with “Sea Of Love” and revel in the raw honesty of doubt and uncertainty.

The FTC Is Sick Of Celebrities Ignoring Rules For Sponsored Tweets

$

When Kim Kardashian starred in a Sketchers Super Bowl ad in 2011, no one was wondering whether or not she was paid for the spot.

It's less clear when Kardashian posts a TwitPic of herself rubbing EOS balm on her "pregnancy lips" to 17.9 million followers.kim kardashian eos twitter endorsement

Does Kardashian just like the lip balm or was she paid what the Huffington Post estimates as $20,000 for the exposure?

Probably the latter, even though there's no indication in the tweet that it's a sponsored message.

And according to the New York Times, the Federal Trade Commission is sick of sneaky, undisclosed, social media celebrity endorsements.

“In a traditional ad with a celebrity, everyone assumes that they are being paid,” FTC associate director of the advertising practices division Mary K. Engle told the NYT. “When it’s not obvious that it is an ad, people should disclose that they are being paid.”

And celebrities and brands might start getting in trouble for leaving out disclosures.

The FTC issued a new set of guidelines on social media advertising disclosures in March for the first time in 13 years.

It wanted Twitter endorsements to use the #ad hashtag (#spon is apparently too confusing) and squeeze words like "typically" or "about" into the 140 character tweet to avoid misleading promises.

The FTC also thinks celebs need to add the disclosure to every related tweet and not just one at the end, in case followers miss the final post.

But that was in March. Since then, Miley Cyrus tweeted this to her 12 million fans sans disclosure:

Miley Cyrus twitter celebrity endorsement

BlackJet told the NYT thatCyrus “was given some consideration for her tweet."

And while Justin Bieber just might like 1-800 Flowers, he tweeted this suspicious message to his 40 million followers:justin bieber twitter endorsement

It was retweeted more than 75,000 times.

Although comedian Michael Ian Black didn't disclose that this was a sponsored tweet:dos equis michael ian black twitter

Followers quickly noticed and Black admitted that he was paid "thousands of dollars to run it."dos equis michael ian black twitter

He then turned his endorsement tweet into Dos Equis' worst nightmare:dos equis michael ian black twitter

In a nutshell, celebrities haven't heeded the FTC's new guidelines. So should they be worried?

The NYT reports, "The F.T.C. declined to comment on any particular instances where celebrities have posted about companies with which they have financial relationships. The agency did say there are “open investigations” into companies that have broken federal rules."

A court in India remanded the boyfriend of the late Bollywood actress Jiah Khan in custody Tuesday over accusations that his behaviour had helped drive her to commit suicide.

Suraj Pancholi, a 22-year-old aspiring actor, was brought before a court in Mumbai after police arrested him on Monday for "abetment to commit suicide", a week after his girlfriend's body was discovered at her home.

Additional Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre-Patil told AFP that the charge was based on the contents of a suicide note found at Khan's Mumbai and from a statement by her mother.

Pancholi was remanded in custody by the court until June 13.

Khan, who made her debut starring opposite acting legend Amitabh Bachchan, was found dead in an apparent suicide on June 3.

The 25-year-old's parents found a suicide note in her wallet which reports said contained details of her troubled relationship with Pancholi.

Khan, born in New York before moving to London and then Mumbai, made her Bollywood debut in 2007 with the controversial film "Nishabd" (No words), playing a teenager in love with her best friend's much older father, played by Bachchan.

The movie won attention because of its provocative storyline and Khan was praised for her bold acting.

Khan, who changed her name from Nafisa Khan, went on to star alongside actor Aamir Khan in "Ghajini", a box-office hit.

India's film industry reacted with shock and sadness to her death, with superstar Aamir Khan saying he was "deeply pained".

Pancholi has been taking acting lessons and was set to make his own film debut, having signed to feature in the Salman Khan movie "Hero". He has previously worked as an assistant director.

The Fanboy In Me Screams Xbox One, The Gamer Insists On PlayStation 4 (MSFT, SNE)

Playstation 4 PS4E3, the biggest video game conference of the year, is upon us and last night Microsoft showed off more Xbox One and Sony followed with their presentation including PlayStation 4

Nintendo's conference is today. Few care.

Great games have been shown during both conferences, but with Sony's disclosure that the PS4 will not require a persistent online connection to play games, that it has a price point of $399 to Microsoft's $499, and will fully support sharing and buying used games, hardcore gamers the world over are already declaring the PS4 as the winner. As much as it kills me to say it, myself included.

I admit to having said that I thought the Xbox One announcement blew away the PlayStation 4 announcement. That's true, it did. But things have changed.

A poll on IGN currently has Sony beating Microsoft at E3 with 85 percent to Microsoft's 12 percent and Nintendo's 4 percent.

The Xbox fanboy in me has died a little over the last couple weeks. I've been playing Xbox since the first day the original Xbox black and green monster released. I've fixed the laser on my Asia version Xbox 360 by myself because it has sentimental value and loads of games I can't play on a U.S. region Xbox.

I have an account on Xbox Live with loads of friends, my wife and I play Xbox Live arcade games with our married friends (we're in our mid 30s, don't judge), and I've been a fan of the exclusives, "Halo," "Bioshock," "Mass Effect," etc.

Yes there are still exclusives on both consoles, but that pool always eventually dilutes down as publishers want to get their games to as many customers as possible. "Metal Gear Solid" and "Devil May Cry" goes to Xbox, "Bioshock" and "Mass Effect" goes to Playstation. Then some of the big new IPs like Bungie's "Destiny" will be multi-platform.

Microsoft requiring console owners to be online all the time with the exception of a 24 hour period is utterly and completely ridiculous. Any Time Warner or Comcast Cable customers out there understand that at any possible moment, their internet can go down for an extended period of time. Those that live in rural areas, like where I grew up, understand that a constant broadband connection isn't always a reality, but a luxury. You people are screwed.

I have very fast broadband today, but the kid in me is crying out that I wouldn't have been able to play the Xbox One longer than 24 hours. That angers me.

Ascetically, both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are beautiful machines.

Xbox One: Sexy.

brand new xbox

PlayStation 4: Also sexy.

Sony Playstation 4

No point of contention there.

Sharing and buying used games, is a problem though. I enjoy buying used games. Like games that came out years ago that I might have missed. I'll download them from Xbox Live or browse my local game store. I don't buy "recent" used games because they are indeed a ripoff. You save what? $5, $10 dollars to buy a game with no return policy? Not worth it. And if I want to give those games away? Microsoft is telling me somebody isn't a friend unless they're friends with me on Xbox Live for 30 days. In what world does that make sense?

I also don't need a million apps and a TV overlay or Skype video calling functionality. I have a smart TV and blu ray player with a million apps. I have a TV antenna and don't watch much TV, and I do my chatting on my computer. I want to play games on my gaming machine, and Sony's approach to the next generation system is reminding me of that.

Xbox Live is the better online network of the two systems regardless of if it costs $60 a year. The service is solid. Compared to PlayStation Network, I'd take Xbox Live. Sony could step up with the PS4 Network by not getting hacked and going down for weeks.

But I'm not sure Xbox Live and my fanboyism is enough to keep me afloat in the Xbox boat any longer. Ideally, I'd love to have both systems. But with games still coming out for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One, I'm leaning towards sticking with my current 360, buying a PS4 and then picking up an Xbox One down the road.

There's still time until both consoles come out, so things could change. Though at this point Microsoft is going to be playing catchup with hardcore gamers.

After the Microsoft and Sony conferences, what console currently has your eye?

The First Epic Trailer For 'The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug' Finally Shows The Dragon

Sales Of George Orwell's '1984' Spike On Amazon After NSA Scandal

1984 George Orwell

George Orwell's classic dystopian novel "1984" has been enjoying a spike in sales this week, and multiplenewsoutlets are attributing it to the NSA surveillance scandal surrounding the PRISM program.

(If you're unfamiliar with the plot or premise of "1984," we have a good explainer here.)

As of Tuesday afternoon, the novel was on Amazon's top 100 best sellers list, and sales have risen about 6,000%, according to the site's "Movers and Shakers" list, which tracks gains in sales rank over the past 24 hours.

The sales rank of one edition shot up from 7,636 to 164.

A representative for Penguin, which publishes "1984," told NBC News' Today.com that she "absolutely" thinks there is a link between the NSA scandal and the "dramatic" spike in sales of the novel.

NPR points out that sales of Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" rose in 2008 after the bank bailouts.

There's no way to conclusively tie the rise in sales of "1984" on Amazon to the PRISM scandal, but we've reached out to Amazon for their take on the trend. We'll update this post if we hear back.

the hobbit evangeline lilly

Warner Bros. just released its first revealing trailer for "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug."

If you haven't checked it out yet, watch it here.

Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) continues his journey from the first film with the dwarves and Gandalf in tow as they head to the Misty Mountains to defeat the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Before they meet up with Smaug, they'll run into elves, a giant spider, and will have to get past the Master of Laketown.

A lot went on in the first trailer. If you're not sure what's going on, we've pulled apart the best takeaways from the teaser.

Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Cate Blanchett star in the film along with Cumberbatch, Christopher Lee, Evangeline Lilly ("Lost"), and Orlando Bloom reprising his role from "The Lord of the Rings."

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" hits theaters December 13.

The reveal of Evangeline Lilly as new elf Tauriel who doesn't appear in the books.

We've shown some images of her previously, but it's nice to see her without a green screen.

Don't expect her character to be a damsel in distress. She looks like a fiery archer.

Yes, that is Orlando Bloom returning as his "Lord of the Rings" character Legolas.

And this is his epic father Thranduil (Lee Pace).
