What do "Citizen Kane" and "Fast and Furious 6" have in common?

They both have a 100% fresh rating on film review site Rotten Tomatoes.

rotten tomatoes fast and furious

Granted, the score will probably go down as more reviews trickle out ahead of the film's release this week, but with ten fresh reviews, including two from Variety and The Hollywood Reporteryou have to give "Fast and Furious 6" distributor Universal credit.

It knows how to build the franchise brand across social media.

Its Facebook page is liked by more than 33 million people—that's more than double of the fans who like "Iron Man" on the site.

It also has star Vin Diesel, who is a powerhouse on Facebook, posting about the film.

On top of that, the film constantly updates its Instagram account with behind-the-scenes set photos.

Other films that scored 100% on Rotten Tomatoes include "Toy Story," "Man on Wire," "The Godfather," and "Citizen Kane."

Here are the Rotten Tomato scores for other big films out this summer:

"Iron Man 3": 78%
"The Great Gatsby": 49%
"Star Trek Into Darkness": 89%

"Fast and Furious 6" may very well be the most liked movie of the summer.

How Angelina Jolie's Mutant Gene Can Cause Cancer

$
0
0

angelina jolie, leg

Tuesday morning actress and sex symbol Angelina Jolie announced that she had both of her breasts removed in a preventative surgery to reduce her risk for breast cancer.

She did this because she has a mutation in a gene called BRCA1.

What's the risk?

Mutations in the BRCA genes (there are two, named 1 and 2 respectively) increase a person's risk for cancers, including breast and ovarian. Only about 0.25% of the general population has mutations in these genes.

While it's only a small amount of the population, someone who carries a mutation in one of these genes is much more likely than the average person to get cancer. A New England Journal of Medicine study indicates that having a mutated BRCA gene increases your lifetime risk of breast cancer to between 60 and 85%, and a lifetime risk of ovarian cancer between 15 and 40%, depending on the gene and the mutation.

The mutation is present in about 2% of female breast cancer cases and 10 to 15% of ovarian cancer cases.

Men with BRCA mutations are also at an increased risk for cancer, including male breast, pancreatic, and prostate cancers.

One dangerous mutation

Genes are the blueprint for the proteins that make up every cell of our body. They are made of a code of DNA letters, which sometimes are copied wrong, creating a mutation in the gene. When a gene is mutated, it may be unable to make a certain protein, which may result in health problems.

In the case of the BRCA mutations, the normal BRCA genes act as "tumor suppressors" — genes that protect cells from growing out of control and becoming cancerous. Unmutated BRCA genes help repair mistakes in genes that are commonly made when a cell multiplies and play a role in the "cell cycle" which regulates how quickly cells grow and multiply.

Therefore, a non-functioning BRCA gene could let tumors develop and also fail to prevent other cancer-promoting mutations.

Any given cell usually needs more than one mutated tumor-suppressor gene to become cancerous, however, which is why having one mutated BRCA gene isn't necessarily a death sentence.

Different mutations

Another important note on mutations in the BRCA genes — they aren't all the same. Not all mutations break the gene's protein product — and there is no definitive test to tell if you have a "working" BRCA gene.

In 10 to 15% of cases where doctors see a mutation in the gene they can't say whether it will break the gene and contribute to cancer risk.

In Jolie's case, however, her doctor reportedly said that her mutation carried a 87% risk of breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer.

In such cases, preventative mastectomies are becoming more common — at least in Pennsylvania.

In 2002, 94 women in Pennsylvania had preventative surgery in which one or both of their breasts were removed either due to genetic factors or the presence of cancer in one breast. According to a 2012 study by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council, in 2012 that number was 455.

Note: We relied on the National Cancer Institute's wonderful, but very technical, summary of the Genetics of Breast and Ovarian Cancer for this post.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is the world's most famous astrophysicist, and he is a HUGE Trekkie.

The host of StarTalk Radio is a fan of science fiction and futuristic movies, and of Star Trek in particular.

Considering his love for space and science, that's no surprise.

What is surprising, though, is his distaste for a certain sci-fi series with its own enormous following.

"I never got into Star Wars," Tyson tells us. "Maybe because they made no attempt to portray real physics. At all."

Watch below Neil deGrasse Tyson talk about Star Wars, Star Trek, and whether he's more of a Captain Kirk or Captain Picard guy:

This is the Water Mill mansion Jennifer Lopez dropped almost $10 million on.

Movie critic Chris McKittrick of Movie Buzzers calls it "The Wedding Crashers crash Google."

Here's the official trailer.

Prince Harry arrived in the U.S. last week for a cross-country publicity tour.

He started in Washington D.C., where he visited the White House and wounded soldiers, before heading west to Colorado Springs and Denver, where he met with athletes and helped kick off the Warrior Games.

On the last leg of his trip he returned east to New York and New Jersey, where he visited the Superstorm Sandy-ravaged boardwalk.

The Prince finishes his trip tomorrow in Greenwich, Conn, where he will compete in a polo match before flying home to the UK.

Of course, the press was on hand to capture every moment of the Prince's whirlwind tour. There were some serious moments, such as when Prince Harry visited Arlington National Cemetery. But overally, it looks as if he's having a blast.

Prince Harry kicked off his visit in Washington DC, where he met First Lady Michelle Obama.

He hung out with a bunch of kids who were at the White House to make Mother's Day presents.

He also checked out an exhibition of anti-landmine photography with Senator John McCain at the Russell Senate office building.

Good morning, AdLand. Here's what you need to know today:

Pretty soon, Vine will be used as a platform for 12 "Peanuts" stop motion, 6-second comics. Khoa Phan's Vine animations got the attention of Peanuts Worldwide, and the company reached out to him for a deal. "The Khoa Phan-Vine deal is part of a larger strategy we’ve had in place for Peanuts for several years — which is to continue to make Snoopy relevant with the young and hip crowd," Cory Cole, social media director for Peanuts, told Mashable. Vine has already been used as a means to recreate the baseball card (for PlayStation), so comics are a logical next step.

McKinney cut about 30 people in North Carolina.

Brian Niccol upgraded from his post as CMO to become the new president of Taco Bell. Marketing exec Chris Brandt will take on Niccol's old duties.

Cross-device ad targeter Drawbridge and eXelate are joining forces to beter mobile ad targeting.

Are there ads out there targeting second-generation Hispanics?

Mashable thinks that these brands "define advertainment."

Illustrator Brian Sanders' hand-drawn, vintage-style poster for the "Mad Men" season 6 premiere drove fans wild with its hidden plot clues.

It drove Target historian — yes, that's a real thing — Tony Jahn crazy for another reason: He felt like he'd seen the ad before.

It turns out that the AMC commissioned poster bears a striking resemblance to a 1960s ad campaign from Dayton, Target's predecessor.

Here's the "Mad Men" poster:

Angelina Jolie people magazine cover

On Tuesday, Angelina revealed in a NY Times op-ed that she had undergone a preventative double mastectomy after finding out she carried a gene giving her an 87% chance of getting breast cancer.

Today, the 37-year-old mother of six is on the cover of People magazine sharing the news that she has also decided to remove her ovaries as a cautionary measure  as the BRCA1 gene means she has a 50% chance of developing ovarian cancer.

According to People, "Some doctors recommend patients undergo the surgery by age 40 or when a woman is done having children, though it may trigger early menopause."

After the surgery, Angelina will no longer be able to have biological children, although she still has the option to adopt.

Jolie and her fiancé, Brad Pitt, currently have three biological children and three adopted children — all under the age of 11.

Jolie has explained in her op-ed that she underwent the double mastectomy so that "I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer."

"The View" host Barbara Walters revealed on Tuesday's show that she had both of her ovaries removed after her sister died from ovarian cancer.

The 83-year-old explained, "It’s not like having the breasts removed because people don’t see it. But it’s a decision you have to make, it’s preventative."

Burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese is selling her blue 1939 Packard 120 sedan on eBay.

And what better way to up interest in an auction than to add some seductive pictures taken in said car?

Sure the car has a rare option Tachometer, but it also has a corset wearing pinup girl sprawled in the backseat. (Not included in the package. Obviously.)

Fans might also be disappointed that they are instructed to call a guy named Howard to set up a viewing rather than Von Teese herself.

The car is currently at $19,100. With just two days left, it still hasn't met its reserve.

The auction is for a 1939 Packard 120 sedan, complete with a rare option Tachometer.

But who cares about tacho-whatevers when you look at Dita Von Teese instead.

The 40-year-old burlesque dancer loves all things vintage.

CNN Anchor Reveals Plans For Double Mastectomy After Being Inspired By Angelina Jolie

Zoraida Sambolin CNN

Following Angelina Jolie's New York Times op-ed in which she revealed she had undergone a preventative double mastectomy, CNN morning news anchor Zoraida Sambolin found the strength to also come forward with plans to have the same surgery.

"I struggled for weeks trying to figure out how tell you that I had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was leaving to have surgery," the 47-year-old host of "Early Start" wrote on her Facebook page. "And then..Angelina Jolie shares her story of a double mastectomy and gives me strength and an opening. #bravewoman."

Sambolin tells People magazine that she was diagnosed with breast cancer about three weeks ago and decided on a double mastectomy as the best course of treatment.

"I have two beautiful kids," she told the magazine. "I want to live for them. You would cut off any appendage to see them grow up."

"I didn't want anyone feeling sorry for me," the CNN anchor continued. "I didn't want to be emotional wreck on air. I tried to figure out the best way. Then when I saw this, I thought, 'Wow, okay.' "

"This inspired me to talk," Sambolin says of Jolie's confession. "When we went into the story, it felt right to share it."

On Tuesday night, Sambolin appeared on "AC360" and told Anderson Cooper about her debate of whether or not to go public.

"I had some real struggles with the whole issue of femininity and sexuality and she [Jolie] talked about that," she explained to Cooper. "I felt like she gave me a voice and she gave me an opportunity that I wouldn't have had otherwise to actually begin this dialogue."

In her op-ed, Jolie wrote, "On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity."

How Bad Is TV Right Now? Univision Routinely Gets More Viewers Than NBC

$
0
0

Sabado Gigante

There has been one huge takeaway from the TV networks' "upfront" events this week, where the broadcast channels tout their shows and audiences for advertisers: Univision now routinely gets more viewers than NBC.

It's not that Univision has suddenly piled on tens of millions of new viewers outside its Spanish language audience. (Its season-to-date audience was only up 1% through April.)

Rather, it's that audiences for traditional TV offerings are collapsing.

When the tide goes out, the rocks get exposed, and Univision is one of the rocks.

It's not a fluke. NBC isn't simply having a bad couple of weeks. Rather, NBC's audience has slowly vanishing since last fall:

Univision finished the February sweeps period with 1.5% of all adults, aged 18-49. NBC had a 1.2% share, ABC had 1.7%, Fox had 2% and CBS had 4.9%. Univision is within striking distance of three of the four big networks, in other words.

In March, Univision crowed that NBC had been behind it for eight consecutive weeks. The streak stretched to 13 weeks in April, Univision claimed.

Deadline, the Hollywood trade blog, called it a "crushing blow" back in late February:

That’s a crushing blow for NBC, which went from flying high in November with a sweep win & [CEO] Steve Burke breaking his usual silence last fall to brag to the New York Times about the network’s performance to its shows cratering and ratings plunging.

From the beginning of the February sweep on January 31 through February 19, NBC has averaged a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49. That’s below the 1.5 that Univision has been averaging so far over the 20 night of the sweep period. In fact, Univision has bested NBC every single night of the sweep so far among adults 18-49 and is poised to overtake NBC for its first fourth-place sweep finish in the demo.

Ratings go up and down, of course. NBC was tops back in November. Things could return to "normal."

But the fact that a channel that serves only 12% of Americans (those who speak Spanish) can now routinely compete with the "big" broadcast networks suggests that the broadcast pool is getting smaller and smaller.
